Welcome to our OLYMPIC edition of the Glenmore Gazette. The games have commenced, and if you are anything like me, you have found a good position on the lounge and are enjoying some armchair exercises as you show your support to our fellow Aussie Olympians! We have already received our first GOLD medal in the Women’s 4 x 100m freestyle relay, with the hope of many more to come! It’s certainly an inspiration to watch and we have loads to offer in this month’s edition to help encourage everyone to get into the OLYMPIC spirit! The chef at Hopewood Retreat has provided a healthy (and patriotic) green & gold recipe this month for you to enjoy. Its quick and easy, leaving you more time for exercise. If you are looking to shed those winter kilo’s Michelle Beech has an article you won’t want to miss, while Narelle Smith has some practical advice on changing children’s negative behaviours into positive ones. It’s certainly been a busy month out and about in our community, with lots of new equipment recently installed and soon to be launched in preparation for the onset of spring! With spring just around the corner, we are planning a spectacular PARTY edition of the Glenmore Gazette which will include all things local to help you make your next party a success! Keep a look out for it! It’s time to put the kettle on, have a cuppa and enjoy this month’s community news. Remember (in true OLYMPIC spirit) the difference between ordinary and extraordinary, is that LITTLE bit extra.

Many residents will have noticed the recently installed shade structure at the Skate Park. The structure was built by council in response to suggestions received by both, skaters and their parents. Bench seats are expected to be installed under the shade shortly. This latest development to the Skate Park was funded from the Glenmore Park Stage 1 Section 94 Developer Contributions. Council has also recently completed, from the same source of funds: storage buildings for sports groups, floodlight upgrades, fencing, and field reconstruction at Ched Towns Reserve. A significant number of spectator bench seats will be installed in the near future. These projects will have seen close to $200,000 invested at the reserve in recent months. A new storage building was constructed at Surveyors Creek Softball facility in July, and as many residents will have witnessed, an Outdoor Health and Fitness Trail at Rotary Park and Glenmore Loch were constructed and are due to be officially opened and launched in August. A second Outdoor Health and Fitness Zone will be installed at Glenmore Park Child and Family Precinct in August.

HOLIDAYS AT GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH
It is great to be part of something that makes a difference! It is such a privilege & blessing to be part of a Church that’s passionate about making a difference in people’s lives with the love of Jesus! During the July Holidays at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we’ve been able to experience the joy of seeing the difference we can make in the lives of people. In the first week of the July holidays, our Church ran a “Kids Holiday Club”. It was a fantastic week! We had around 230 Infants & Primary age children & leaders & helpers from Glenmore Park, and the surrounding area come along for a great time of fun, games, crafts, singing & talks all with the goal of helping the kids discover Jesus. The week finished off with an excellent “Family Fun Night” which put together some of the highlights of the week as well as a BBQ for the parents & their children.
Cnr William Howell Dr & Pritchard Pl Ph 4733 1635 www.glenmorepark.anglican.asn.au beautiful Port Hacking to hear a series of talks on “The God who is” and the difference He can have in their lives. After a full & totally enjoyable weekend, they returned to Church on Sunday night for a BBQ & the concluding talk to the weekend having discovered that “The God who is” is not only real, but cares for them & is deeply interested in their lives. We’d love to see you at Church with us on Sundays at 8.30am, 10.15am 5pm, or 7pm so you too can be part of something that makes a difference! Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 and 7pm. Another Holiday event was our “Salt & Light Christmas in July”. “Salt & Light” is a ministry in our Church, which aims to share the compassion & mercy of Jesus in a practical way with people in our local community who are in need. There was a wide range of activities including many people donating blood, providing blankets, warm clothing, toys, food, Coles Vouchers along with making & delivering “Christmas Puddings” all for people in need & older people in our local community. On the last weekend of the holidays, our Church held its annual “Youth Camp” for High School students. Over 80 students & leaders travelled to the Anglican Church Campsite at

Padre Pio Parish Update
True Grit!
One of the things the leader of any church congregation loves to see is new, fresh faces, especially if they are young families! On a recent Sunday I had the marvellous experience of welcoming to our 9:00am Mass several dozen kindergarten children and their parents and other family members. The church was abuzz with the sound of little (and some not so little!), chattering voices and laughter as the children fidgeted in the front pews, excited to be the centre of attention at this celebration in which we give thanks to God and are nourished by the Word of God and the Body and Blood of Jesus. The presence of so many children and young families is a great gift to our parish at Glenmore Park. Children and youth make an incredible difference to our worship, making our church feel very much alive and vibrant. The Sunday in question saw the presence of not only young children but also their parents and other family members, some of whom had not been to a Sunday church celebration for a while. I was most gratified to have quite a few parents remark after Mass what a great time they had had with the upbeat choir, well-proclaimed readings and the inclusion of the children in bringing forward the gifts of bread and wine. One father even said to me that it had been a long time since he had come to Mass and it was refreshingly different from what he remembers in years gone by! The young however, do more than merely bring life to our various communities and gatherings – they are more than a novelty or pleasant distraction. If we are to ensure that the various social groupings we value so much are to survive into the future, be they churches, sporting groups, clubs and so forth, we need to ensure that these young people feel valued. We need to acknowledge the gifts and talents they bring to our communities and understand that we can learn from them and benefit from their presence as much as they can from ours.

Luke teaches Haidong Gumdo for Nepean Wolves Taekwondo and Haidong Gumdo at Glenmore Park Public School on Monday evenings.

A burst water main was responsible for leaving up to 12 homes flooded in Glengarry Drive and Westerly Way on Tuesday 3rd July. Residents were woken at about 8am by torrents of water, with the current ripping up road and crushing driveways, causing thousands of dollars worth of damage. Thousands of litres of water from the broken pipes flooded parks and houses, with emergency services called to the scene and forced to close the street when it was discovered the burst main had also caused a gas leak forcing a further evacuation. Penrith Mayor Greg Davies said: “Sydney Water Corporation’s insurance will cover the repair cost – that means there’s no cost to Council or our residents.” “But there will be inconvenience. We have to wait until the area has had a chance to dry out and settle down. In the meantime, we’ll be doing temporary road repairs to ensure

Last September, the day before his 10th birthday, Glenmore Park youngster, Sam Crittenden was diagnosed with Juvenile Diabetes (Type 1), while on holidays in Disneyland. “Since his diagnosis, his whole family's life has been turned upside down”, according to his mother Julie Crittenden. “Everyday as a family, we struggle with the new and overwhelming challenges that come with having a TYPE 1 Diabetic child; however Sam continues to amaze his friends and family with his bravery and fighting spirit against this terrible disease. He is such an inspiration to his whole family and they are determined to do everything in their power to raise as much money as possible to help find a cure. “ says Julie. A Trivia Night will be held from 7pm on Saturday 18th August 2012 at St Marys Band club to raise money and awareness about Juvenile Diabetes. Green Diet Wins Gold Medal
Mint, Pea and Avocado Salad Here’s a real gold medal meal, to bring out the best in all of us. It’s super healthy, and most importantly quick and easy, leaving more time for training! Best of all, it highlights the green and gold colours of our Aussie Olympians! Courtesy of Hopewood.
Starch | Serves 4-6 INGREDIENTS • 500g fresh peas, cooked and cooled • 3 avocados, peeled and cubed • 2 bunches of fresh asparagus, washed and trimmed (steam for 1 minute optional) • 3 fresh mint leaves, chopped • 2 tablespoons apple cider vinegar • 1 tablespoon sweet chilli sauce • 1 tablespoon honey METHOD Toss all prepared ingredients together and serve.
*Recipe reprinted with permission from hopewood@home, Hopewood Health Retreat’s cookbook of healthy recipes to share with family and friends.
When we think about vegetarians, athletes and Olympians probably aren’t the first people that come to mind – but perhaps they should be. In fact, eating a vegetarian diet can easily provide your body with the protein and nutrients it needs to be a power house. Just ask distance runner David McNeill, a vegetarian who will be making his Olympic debut in London this year. Unlike many of us who often let our eating habits slip over the colder months, McNeill and other London 2012 medallist hopefuls have to keep up their good eating habits all year round, and it’s a lesson we can learn from! With Olympic fever just about to envelop the nation, there’s no better incentive to be healthy and active than watching our home-grown prospective champions going for gold. According to Hopewood Health Retreat’s Head Chef, John Estival, although we realise the importance of healthy eating or benefits of vegetarianism, many of us simply don’t have the knowledge to prepare meals that are both wholesome and exceptionally delicious. “Very few of us think we have the time to create meals that are really good for us, or we believe that healthy meals mean bland and boring flavours. The reality though is that healthy eating can be fast and uncomplicated, and is delicious as well as having added nutritional value.” Hopewood Health Retreat has recently introduced healthy cooking classes, presented by the Head Chef, who strongly believes that once equipped with the right knowledge, preparing a healthy vegetarian dish is a breeze. “It’s like I tell people in my classes, vegetarian cooking doesn’t limit your options – instead it opens up a whole world of tasty and healthy dishes,” says Estival. Naturally, when the weather is cold, it is easier to give in to the temptation of rich, filling foods to warm us and bring comfort. Unfortunately, this also means that many of us carry a bit more weight than we would normally like to and in Winter it is more difficult to find time to move our bodies and keep active and trim. Many of us wake in the morning with good intentions - picturing ourselves looking shiny, new, healthy and thinner. We think, today is the day I will make the change. However, no matter how good our intentions we often give in to our weaknesses. I hear it over and over again, people tell me how hard they’ve tried but they feel like they are failures. There are many reasons for weight gain, and sub-optimal health, and it is not always due entirely to what we consume. There are many factors which include: – Hormonal, especially for women who are peri or postmenopausal or suffering PMS issues – Wrong food choices – especially when you believe these foods are healthy. There is a lot of misinformation from food manufacturers who are out there to push their products. – Foods that are not compatible with your metabolism or blood type that may cause inflammation or mild allergy which can upset our digestive processes resulting in poor absorption, assimilation and elimination. – Foods that increase hunger and appetite, rather than satiate it. – Sometimes nutritional deficiencies keep our bodies craving for the wrong things. – Not enough exercise and movement and especially lack of motivation. And the list goes on. So what to do?
The good news is there is much than can be done with often minor, sustainable and achievable lifestyle changes. Knowledge is power. Being a Naturopath/Nutritionist, I am able to work with my patients providing that knowledge and self-empowerment. Obviously, there are no magic pills, so to speak, but there are many herbs and nutrients, and homeopathy that make the journey achievable, along with lifestyle coaching and goal-setting. I have recently established my new clinic at 48 Lucasville Road, Glenbrook (just up the road from Glenbrook village.) View my website at www.michellebeech.com.au or the Natural Therapies pages: www.naturaltherapypages.com.au/natural_medicine/ nsw/glenbrook/Naturopath Most healthfunds covered. Offstreet parking. Pensioner discounts. Let me assist you towards achieving a healthier you. I would welcome your enquiries. Call 4739 9947 or 0414 944 112 to make an appointment. For a short time, mention this article and you will receive 10% off your first visit.

PARENT’S CORNER
Do some of your child’s behaviours drive you bonkers? Changing children’s negative behaviours into positive ones. Are you paying attention to the same negative behaviours day in and day out? And then you find yourself saying to your child “why do you never listen to me, how many times do I have to tell you?”. Well, I’ll tell you a secret… your child will continue to do the behaviours that you pay attention to. There is 40 years of research that says if you pay attention to the behaviours you want to see in your child, he or she will do more of them. Child not listening? Praise him for when he does listen. “Thanks mate, you really listened to me and it made it easier for both of us.” Child not speaking nicely? Notice when she does speak nicely. “You spoke so nicely when you spoke to your sister about that, you were very kind.” And so on. But you have to change your view and be alert to seeing the positive behaviours in your child, and praise it when you see it every single time. However, saying “good boy” or “good girl” doesn’t tell your children what they are doing well, and encourages sibling rivalry because children start to vie for their parents’ attention. Be specific – Tell your child exactly what you liked about what he did "Thanks for putting your washing in the basket, it really helps me.". Keep it positive – Say “I appreciate you walking through the house” rather than “thanks for not running”. Be genuine, say it when you mean it - Praise should always be genuine. Encourage new activities - Praise children for their effort and hard work, not for their talents (being smart, clever, beautiful). Praise kids for trying new things and for not being afraid to make mistakes, Focus on the process - It's the process, not the product that matters. "You really put a lot of effort into that project", tells your child that you recognise the value of his or her hard work and efforts, Not all our kids will go to the Olympics, get a PhD in nuclear physics, or play violin for the Australian Chamber Orchestra, but children who learn to work hard and persevere have a sense of pride in who they are and what they do, and they bounce back quicker when they experience disappointment or bad luck. And if they get it wrong? Well they are only young. Ask them for a “do-over” (example: “how could you have said that in a kinder way?”) and praise them for getting it right. And remember that a hug, smile, nod, and wink goes a long way too. Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services. Foster Carers Needed Is it possible to trust when you’ve always been let down?
We believe it is. YOU CAN HELP THEM to believe it too by becoming a foster carer.... Barnardos Temporary Family Care (TFC) Program, Penrith urgently needs Short Term and Weekend Carers for children 0 – 12 years in the Blue Mountains, Penrith and Hawkesbury areas.

Child Restraint Laws – It’s Easy with BEESAFE The NSW Government recently updated Child Restraint Laws that require ALL children under seven years of age to be secured in a suitable child restraint or booster seat when travelling in a vehicle. Drivers will need to ensure that children younger than four years of age do not travel in the front seat of a vehicle where that vehicle also has rear seats. Also, children under seven years of age cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle where that vehicle also has rear seats, unless all the rear seats are occupied by children younger than seven years. New standards introduced this year provide for shoulder height indicators on all new child car restraints being manufactured in Australia. These indicators are a guide for parents when choosing the correct child restraint for their child & have been introduced to assist parents where there has been confusion in the past regarding children’s height & weight. Correct selection of your child’s car restraint is critical, using an incorrect restraint based on your child’s circumstance can lead to serious consequences. While the newly shoulder
OLYMPIC EDITION
height indicators are there to assist you, it is important that you understand the weight limitations of all restraints and for that you should seek the advice of experts. An unrestrained child sitting in the rear seat of a vehicle can hit the driver with force equivalent to the weight of a baby elephant. Surveys carried out by Kidsafe have found that some 69% of all child restraints inspected were found to be incorrectly fitted and some 25% would have put the child at risk of death or serious injury in an accident. Most importantly, properly fitted child restraints can reduce the risk of death or serious injury in road crashes by up to 70%. It is therefore vitally important to have all child restraints fitted, if not inspected, by a trained professional. Beesafe Travel is an RTA Authorised Child Restraint & Seat Belt installation service, who have over 15 years experience in the professional fitting of child restraints. As your local authorised professionals, they operate a mobile service which comes right to your door. For maximum piece of mind, call Angela at Beesafe Travel now on 0404 132 208 for more information or to book a mobile installation.
