A Community that Carols Together, Comes Together! Glenmore Park Anglican Church’s ‘Carols in the Park’ are back this year, bigger and better than ever! The popular community Christmas Carols will take place on Sunday 18th December from 5:00pm at Blue Hills Oval in Glenmore Park. There will be lots of fun and exciting activities for the family. From 5:00pm to 7:00pm, there will be jumping castles, face painting, BBQ and food stalls. The Christmas Carols will begin at 7:00pm and will finish just before 8:30pm, so there is plenty of time for parents to get their children home for bed. “Carols in the Park is a very special occasion for everyone to come and celebrate the joy of Christmas. People say that our Carols in the Park gets better and better every year” said Rev. John Lavender from Glenmore Park Anglican Church. The Church recently hosted their Annual Christmas Gingerbread Extravaganzas. With over 500 people attending across the week at four different events, they were a big success. Some of the events were for women, others were for men and women and some specially designed for kids. Many of the attendees said that it was the highlight of their year.  A great night out for the whole family to enjoy | Image Supplied

FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

Joy To The World Will Christmas be special for you? For many of us, we celebrate Christmas, we enjoy the parties, the friends, the gifts, and although the shopping may be frustrating, at the end, we can say, to some degree, yep, we did have a “Happy Christmas.” Yet, when Christmas has gone, has it changed us? Are we any different? A well-known Christmas carol you would’ve heard over the PA at shopping centres has the words “Joy to the world.” These words are based on the extraordinary announcement recorded for us in the Bible where an angel proclaimed to a gathering of very startled shepherds on that first Christmas; “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Why is news of a Saviour such great joy? Here’s the thing. Recognise it or not, each of us needs rescue. You might ask; “Rescue from what?” The Bible’s truth is confronting, but true to our life experience. None of us has treated God as we should. All of us have wandered from Him, not giving Him the honour He deserves, leaving Him on the edge of our lives, if we include Him at all. The good news of great joy is that God, because of His love for us, sent Jesus into our world to rescue us, to bring us back home, to reconnect us with God.

At Christmas, we remember Jesus coming into our world to offer us forgiveness and hope. Jesus’ coming to take away our guilt and fear and give us peace, joy, and a confident future. These are magnificent, life transforming truths. This is the good news we at Glenmore Park Anglican Church would love to celebrate with you at Christmas – joy to the world; a Saviour born, a rescuer has come. Your Saviour! Your rescuer! We’d love to see you at one or more of our special Christmas Services (see our ad below) and celebrate this news of great joy with you all! Want to find out more? Give me a call on 4733 1635. Goldilocks This year looks like being red hot for the Glenmore Park Redbacks Cricket Club; with the 2016/17 Season already off to a cracking start. The local cricket club has just over 190 juniors and 140 seniors, which equates to 26 teams, making it the biggest club in the Nepean District. The 16 junior teams range from the Under 8’s to the Under 16’s, including 4 teams in the Under 12’s. There are 10 senior men’s sides, with a team in every grade. After 6 premierships and the N.D.C.A Club Championship last year, it has been a great start to the season with 1st, 2nd and 8th Grade all still undefeated in the senior ranks. In the juniors, the Under 11’s, 12’s and 13’s are also unbeaten. Glenmore Park Cricket Club also became the first club in the district to have juniors take to the field in full colour uniforms, just like in the Big Bash. Senior Secretary Adrian D’Agostino loves being a part of the club, ever since he joined as a 10-year-old. “The best part about being involved is the community spirit that has grown within the club. It has been a privilege to see the way our club members not only enjoy each other’s success but rally around those going through tough times and offer support in times of need. Many club members have forged ongoing friendships through the club, and players new to the area have been welcomed with open arms and made to feel

FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School

Christmas Day Service 9am at Regentville Public School hall

The Call Of Christmas When Jesus came to earth His first message was: “Change your thinking about things and turn your life toward God because He has come near to you.” His hearers thought God was far away, and the sum of their lives was about survival under Roman occupation. They threw in a bit of religion, but it didn’t give them much hope. Life was consumed with survival. When Jesus came (the focus of Christmas) and started teaching, He said: “God has come! There is hope for more than mere survival. Change your thinking, turn to God for His blessing of inner peace, and for a life lifted up into what is noble and soul-satisfying.” Before we think we are better than them, have you ever stopped to try to sum up in a phrase what is the main focus of your life? I mean what you spend most of your time and energy doing? I suspect for many of us it is: earning money to buy things. Now this is important, but is it any more than “just surviving” if we are always chronically busy doing this? If this is what, in the main, we do with our lives!? The economy (as necessary as it is) has become a bloated part of society, squeezing out time for our kids and other important relationships, time to be creative, to receive love and to give it away, to serve the needy, to rest, think, throw rocks in a pond, find peace, get healthy, and let God speak words of hope into our souls. Christmas is the call of Jesus to turn our lives towards God because He has come near; to find peace, the rhythms of love, and great joy in a life more noble and fulfilling than earning money to buy things. Ironically, but not surprisingly, Christmas has become just that, and our souls feel it too! Merry Christmas! I pray that you hear the call of Jesus and find what he came to give you, Paul

Healed By Triathlon When her mother died of Leukaemia two years ago, Leanne Smyth fell into a black hole of grief. Running and triathlon helped her move back into the light. The 43-year-old from Glenmore Park was on the starting line, testing herself over the 1.9km swim, 180km ride and 21.1km run that made up last month’s IRONMAN® 70.3® Western Sydney. “I have only been competing in triathlons for 12 months. Just over two years ago my mum passed away from Leukaemia at the age of 63. I spiralled down into a black hole and to deal with the grief; I started running at the beginning of 2015. It led me to compete in a couple of half marathons in 2015,” she said. A competitive swimmer who raced at national level when she was a teenager, Smyth was encouraged to give triathlons a go by an old school friend. “Todd and I used to swim together, and he is an IRONMAN himself who competed at Kona this year. He inspired me and put me in touch with his coach and now here I am,” she said. A lawyer with two children aged 13 and eight, Smyth finally feels as if she’s found ‘her thing.’ “I train approximately 13-15 hours per week and most of the time; I can’t wait to get out there. With my family and my job, it means I’m often training very early in the morning or late at night. Training is my time out. It helps clear my head. And it’s the first thing I’ve had that is just for me since I had my daughter 13 years ago… I love it,” she said. A strong swimmer, Smyth was most apprehensive about the 21.1km run leg at IRONMAN 70.3 Western Sydney, especially getting through it after a 90km bike ride. But when she found herself in one of those tough moments that invariably came during IRONMAN 70.3, it was experience and her family that got her through.  Leanne Smyth | Image Supplied

“I just love coming together with the outdoors and not being cooped up inside all day” explained Cooper Brennan when asked about the new outdoor learning centre at Surveyors Creek Public School. “At the start of the year we had to draw up a map and share our ideas” Ann Thomas joined in. The idea originated from a desire to improve their playground. The new buildings created an area of land that was dusty and a wasted space. Michele Hanman A.P along with the Stage 3 teachers have guided the students through the planning, costing and construction. Each of the senior classes designed a large decorative Australian themed mural that acts as a screen around the rain water tanks and the storage container. The seats in the reading circle are tree stumps that are painted in Aboriginal dot designs by the students. The whole project has been a team effort between school staff, students and volunteers. There are four main areas that include a bush tucker garden, outdoor classroom space with a tree trunk lectern, reading circle “that’s where the murals are” added Hayley Rayner and the “goldrush area with shafts and little huts made from paddle pop sticks” added Connor Gilboy. “When digging out for the plants, we found some really peculiar and weird stuff ” said Bradley Koen “No wonder the ground was so bleached!”

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps‌ This month we wrap up the series on parent traps that we have been focussing on all year‌ Blame Is A Dead End Street. It stops us from looking clearly at a problem, and how we can change things so that our children (and ourselves) can learn new skills and behaviours. It is always better to try to solve a problem in a proactive way rather than being consequence-driven. Being proactive means thinking about what we need to teach our children and how we can teach them, with the aim of preventing the mistaken behaviour. Blame takes two forms: • Blaming The Child For How You Feel “You are making me angry.â€? Who owns your emotions? You do. Yes, your child may be doing something extremely cheeky, but your emotional response is your own. It’s no wonder that many children blame others for the problems they are experiencing. We role model it for them. Take responsibility for own thoughts, feelings, and actions. Most child behaviour does not require a light-speed reaction. You can take 20 to 30 seconds to take some deep breaths and centre yourself before your respond to your child’s behaviour. • Blaming yourself, and thinking that you are a bad parent. You cannot be a calm, patient, and consistent parent if you are stressed or depressed. Knowledge is power. These days, most parents don’t want to smack or yell at their children, but they don’t have any other strategies in their parenting toolbox. A parenting workshop or course, either in person or online, will provide additional tools to enable you to be a more positive parent. • Blaming Someone Else. If you blame someone else (partner, siblings, teacher) for your child’s behaviour, you may come to the conclusion that there is nothing you can do to change it. This can lead to frustration and may affect your relationship with other people and your child. There is no such thing as a perfect parent or a perfect child. Most of the training is on-the-job and all new skills and behaviours take time. When we have a positive attitude towards our parenting and the belief that we can make change, the whole family can benefit. DECEMBER BIRTHDAYS

THE BUSINESS BUILDER

Article Written + Submitted by: Zoltan Szentirmay Founder of CFO@CALL | Author of “WHY BUSINESSES STOP GROWING and What You can do About it” P: 1300 854 480 E: admin@cfoatcall.com.au W: cfoatcall.com.au

Stop Revive And Survive When driving in Australia you frequently see signs encouraging drivers to “stop, revive, and survive”. It is part of a road safety campaign aimed at reducing the number of crashes caused by driver fatigue. It highlights the early signs of fatigue and advises drivers on what to do as soon as they spot them. It’s very good advice for businesses as well. I recently read an article about the writer’s holiday in France. His family stayed in a furnished cottage in Brittany which was one of six that had been created from old barns and farm buildings. The owners had turned rundown and disused wrecks into a thriving business around 20 years ago. The cottages shared a swimming pool and were set in beautiful countryside only 1.5 kilometres from the nearest beach. Sounds idyllic, doesn’t it? But it turns out that the place was very tired; no refurbishment or updating had been carried out since the initial restoration had taken place and business was dropping off as a result. The owners’ response to the decline in bookings and hence revenue was to cut-back, reducing some of the services and extras they were offering in an attempt to reduce costs. But their prices were still at the high-end for the area. Not surprisingly their occupancy levels had continued to slide and they were being forced into offering significant discounts for last minute bookings. The cottage owners had clearly lost their way. They had no vision for their business, where it sat in the market, what it was offering or what made it stand out from the competition. Instead of taking a step back and restating or redefining their vision they were stuck in a downward cycle of cost reduction and falling demand. They were heading for a crash. Meanwhile their competitors, who had a clear vision and proposition, were thriving. Stop, revive, survive in a business context is about spotting the early signs that the business may be losing its direction and then

12 December 2016

taking a step back, lifting yourself out of the day-to-day operations so that you can clarify or update your businesses mission, vision and strategy and identify the changes necessary to put things back on track. That’s not to say that this is an easy thing to do. Some business owners can’t always see what really needs to be done to address a dip in performance; they are either too close or unable to make time to deal with the real issues. This is often a problem in businesses with very low staff turnover. Some turnover is healthy in any organisation and can guard against this cycle by providing a different perspective, fresh thinking and new ideas provided they are involved in a strategic review. Ensuring the leadership team continue to develop themselves and keep up-to-date with trends and new developments across different industries is also important regardless of how long they have been with the organisation. Time spent on personal development tends to reduce with seniority yet it is no less important. Networking with peers in other companies, coaching and the use of critical friends and advisers will all help business owners and the business to stay on track. A well-run business with an owner that will pro actively review, refocus and refine its vision and strategy and make the necessary changes, ensures it remains relevant before the signs of fatigue set in. Some will go further and seek to disrupt their business model to create market leading positions even though things are going well. But those businesses that don’t take time to stop, revive and survive will eventually crash. Make this Christmas break one where you take the opportunity to reflect and reassess. Wishing everyone a very Happy Christmas and successful 2017.

My Name Is Joel

Classes held on Tuesday evenings at Surveyors Creek Public School and Thursday evenings at Glenmore Park Public School Age graded classes from 4-years-old to adults The first class is complimentary My name is Joel Tropiano. I was diagnosed in February this year with Stage 3 Prostate Cancer and it was confirmed in April with a follow up biopsy following an unusually high PSA Blood level reading. I was placed on a short waiting list and on the 1st of June this year, a radical Prostatectomy was performed on me via key hole and robotic surgery and a hospital stay was required. Upon release from hospital and many months of recovery, follow ups with my GP and Urologist and physio, I have been required on a 4 to 6 weekly basis to check Normalization of PSA levels, pelvic floor exercises and programs to regain continence and bladder control. Men can easily get checked with their local GP, who will write a script for a blood test to check the PSA level and/or physical examination. The best advice I can give men is be more in touch with your body and health and with any changes that may occur. Have that conversation with your local GP and loved ones and together we can break down the stigma of a disease that is unnecessarily taking the lives of over 3,500 men annually. My name is Joel. I was diagnosed at 45.

Santa Photos With Your Pets Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2016 to take photos with your pets. Santa will be here from Thursday 1st December until Saturday 24th December 2016, Mon-Fri (9am-7pm) and on Saturdays (9am12pm). For a $10 cash donation, your Santa photo is presented in a Christmas card, with all proceeds donated to the Guide Dogs NSW. We have Christmas themed props for your pet’s photos (e.g. hats and scarves), feel free to bring in your own outfits.

Keeping Your Pets Safe At Christmas Ham and Turkey (meat/bone/fat) – Causes vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, or constipation. Skewered Meat - If your dog is a rubbish raider, he/she may swallow a skewer, this can be life threatening should the oesophagus, stomach or intestine be pierced and cause peritonitis. Chocolate/Fudge - Causes vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis, Theobromine can cause chocolate toxicity resulting in seizures or death. The more cocoa that is in the chocolate the more toxic it will be. Cooking chocolate is seven times more toxic than milk chocolate. Coffee/Tea - Coffee and Tea contain xanthines, which can cause cardiac and nervous system damage. Grapes, Sultanas and Raisins - These contain a toxin that targets the kidneys and can cause renal failure. Macadamia Nuts – Causes vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis. Macadamia nuts contain a toxin that can affect the nervous system of dogs – resulting in incoordination or paralysis.

Alcohol - Alcohol even in small quantities can cause intoxication. intoxiication Clean up after parties and don’t leave drinks at dog heights. Alcohol can kill your pet. Cooked Bones - Never feed your dog/cats cooked bones. These bones can splinter and cause intestinal tearing causing peritonitis – this is life threatening. Artificial Sweeteners - Xylitol common in many sugar free drinks and lollies causes low blood sugar (even in small quantities) in dogs. Meat Soaked Strings from your Roast - These taste delicious to your pets. Can cause linear foreign body requiring emergency surgery. Decorations and Wrappings - Risk for intestinal obstruction (linear foreign body) or strangulation. Christmas tree decorations – Can cause strangulation, intestinal obstructions, cuts from glass ornaments. Heat Stroke/Stress - An Australian Christmas is often spent around the pool or outside having fun. If your pet doesn’t know when to rest/stop playing/running laps around the pool they may quickly succumb to heat stroke. Batteries - If swallowed these can be toxic or cause an intestinal obstruction. Electrical Cables/Christmas Lights - Electrocution risk or fire risk if chewed. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. Penrith LGA, Warragamba/Silverdale residents over the age of 65 or those living with disabilities rely on the delivery of nutritious meals to their home, regular luncheon outings, bus excursions and health checks. Nepean Food Services have over 90 volunteers who provide a friendly, reliable and essential service to members of our community who need support. At our recent AGM, Emma Husar MP for Lindsay thanked Nepean Food Services saying, “You are all doing a wonderful job and I intend to support Nepean Food Services wherever and whenever I can.” Penrith Mayor John Thain remembers helping pack and deliver Meals on Wheels for Nepean Food Services when he was previously our Mayor. He shared a story of a gentleman who had chatted with him about his model car collection and mentioned to the Mayor that he is the only person he would see all day. The Mayor commended Nepean Food Services saying “Thank you for the service you give to the city. It’s very valuable.”

HEALTH MATTERS

Animal Protein – Does It Cause Or Help Osteoporosis?? sources. Clinical studies do not support that animal proteins are detrimental to bone health, or that vegetable proteins are better for bone health. Indeed, some (but not all) studies show animal protein is associated with increased IGF, mineralization, and fewer fractures. This doesn’t give all those meat-o-philes the green light to avoid there veges though!! Vegetables in the diet beneficially effect bone health, indeed bone loss observed statistically in populations with increased meat consumption may actually be more a reflection of inadequate vegetable intake. Importantly, protein intakes that are too low (< 50g per day = ½ a salmon fillet, for a 60kg adult) actually cause reduced intestinal Ca absorption, plus increased parathyroid hormone which then causes leaching of calcium from bone. If you have read my other articles on osteoporosis, you will be getting the picture that building and maintaining strong bones depends on many factors. A balanced, highly varied, nutrientrich whole food diet that ‘includes enough protein’ is key. So whether from animal or plant sources, complete protein will help the body build and keep bones strong. Protein from organic grass fed animals‌ especially nutrient-rich organ meats, muscle meats, or wild caught fish, oysters & other sea foods is best; or a carefully combined mix of organic pulses and whole-grains is required if you are a vegetarian.

OK so let’s look at one of the most misunderstood nutrients when it comes to osteoporosis - protein. There is a lot of misleading literature that suggests that excess protein consumption – especially animal protein - can be a cause of osteoporosis, by increasing calcium loss via the urine. But let’s take a look at what well done science tells about protein’s effect on bone (including animal protein). Protein makes up 50% of bone volume, 1/3 of its mass. It forms a network throughout bone around which calcium crystalizes. This network is continually broken down and rebuilt, but to rebuild it, the body needs protein from the diet. So dietary (animal) protein intake from real food: o Increases urinary calcium excretion, but o Increases intestinal calcium absorption o Does not result in net reduction in calcium balance o Has a direct anabolic effect on bone (independent of calorie intake) which helps build bone (by) o Increasing production of a bone building hormone called IGF-1 (that) o The drives formation of the structural matrix of bone Note: A net calcium loss from the body is observed when purified proteins or amino acids are taken in isolation as in body building supplements for example, but this does not happen with protein in whole food form, from animal or plant

FROM EDITOR FROM THE THE EDITOR

Here we are, the final publication of the year. 2016 has seen the team at the District Gazette reporting on many highs and lows across our community. We have witnessed countless success stories, and many amazing and heroic moments. We have shared numerous ‘feel-good stories’ and reported on several events from across our community. It’s been a brilliant year of bringing local businesses to your door, it’s no secret that ‘We Love Local’ and thank you for supporting local business too. Christmas is almost upon us! Spare a thought for those that are entering this Festive Season with emptiness and a heavy heart, whether it’s the first year or a repeat of many without that special someone, the pain seems to remain the same. Dr Seuss once said ‘Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory’. Share many special moments with those close to you this Festive Season. From the team here at the District Gazette, we wish you and yours a happy and safe Christmas and New Year, we’ll be back in February 2017! Stay safe!
