Real Christmas Trees Are Back! After a devastating year of drought comes some positive news with Glenmore Christmas Tree Farm back in 2020, producing and selling Christmas trees once again to the local community this month. The popular local farm has been providing homes with trees for over 20 years and their return is sure to bring some cheer for the festive season. “We have been growing Christmas trees for 25 years now. At times over the years, we have had thousands for sale. But, in recent times we have been susceptible to drought and bushfires. We did not open last year because of the drought. This year we are back, and we have a few hundred trees to sell” said Mark Ford of Glenmore Christmas Tree Farm to the Glenmore Gazette. Glenmore Christmas Tree Farm opens on Saturday 5th of December. They will be opened from 9:00am till 5:00pm on weekends, until sold out. Stands for trees will also be available to purchase. The cost of the Christmas trees will be $80. This is regardless of size. “Our customers love the smell of real Christmas trees. There is nothing like it. Adding to this, real trees can look much better too” smiled Mark. The trees are expected to sell out, so get in early! Glenmore Christmas Tree Farm are located in Mulgoa. FAITH - FOOTHILLS CHURCH

Christmas is More Than COVID Relief

Christmas is a celebration of the birthday of Jesus Christ. Giving gifts, roast turkey, and fairy lights bring welcome relief from COVID but Christmas isn’t about these things at all. What?! It’s okay, I’m not voting to get rid of turkey, just clarifying what is what with this celebration. Christmas celebrates the birth of someone born just over 2000 years ago named Jesus Christ. “Jesus” was a common name like John or Bill. “Christ” points to something special about him as taught in the Bible – that he was sent by God to forgive our sins, heal our lives, and make possible an eternal life with God after we die physically. If what the Bible says is true (as I believe), the birth of Jesus addresses key questions like: “What happens to us when we die?” and “What is God like?” Now, the Bible teaches that Jesus had to come to earth and be born as a man so that he could deal with the sins of humanity by dying on a cross. This means that the guilt and shame for the worst of sins can be forgiven because Jesus has paid the price for them. Jesus then rose from the dead, defeating death itself and he shares his victory with anyone who believes in him. This means that death is not the end of the line but a transition to a life with God forever. This is way beyond turkey! And for this reason, when Jesus was born in the first century there were angels singing and wise men bowing down to the baby Jesus and worshipping him like a special King. If you think about it, we sing about all of this in our Christmas carols, for example: “Hark the herald angels sing…” and “We three kings of orient are, bearing gifts…”. Roast turkey and fairy lights are a welcome relief from COVID. But when we face the real questions of life that COVID stirs up Jesus is the answer, and he is open to all who reach out to him. Have a restful and happy Christmas. FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.gpachurch.online Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week. One of our great pursuits in life is happiness. What could be more important? We build houses, buy cars, make friends, go on holidays often all in the pursuit of happiness. We even say it to our children, “I just want you to be happy.” The difficulty with happiness is that it can be taken away as quickly as it comes. For most of us, COVID has put a big hole in the things that would normally make us happy. Missed holidays, small weddings, difficulties at work and more stress everywhere. We want things to return to ‘normal’ so we can just feel better about the world. What could be more important than happiness? JOY! Joy is something more deep-seated than happiness. Happiness often depends on the things around us. Joy goes deeper and comes from knowing that despite the current situation, everything is OK and will be OK. This is what makes Christmas such an important time. Parts of Christmas make us happy: presents, holidays and family just to name a few. However, Christmas is about Jesus and the good news that we have a Saviour. He is the one who is able to bring each one of us true and lasting joy. As the shepherds were told that first Christmas, “I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord.” (Luke 2:10–11)” Christmas Services: 9am, 10:45am, 5pm at Glenmore Park

First Peek at New Performing Arts and Learning Centre Design

DOGGY DAY CARE Care - Stay - Play ALL DAY

DECEMBER GROOMING SPECIAL Plans are forging ahead to deliver a new performing arts and learning centre at Glenmore Park High School, with the first designs now released by the NSW Government. Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies welcomed the progress on the project and said she was excited to share the first images of the centre with the community. “I’m proud that the NSW Government is delivering this exciting project at Glenmore Park High School. It will benefit the high school, many other primary schools and the local community for years to come” Mrs Davies said. Glenmore Park High School’s new performing arts and learning centre is part of a $50 million program to deliver new and upgraded halls at 10 schools across the state. Education Minister Sarah Mitchell said she was proud that the halls program will benefit more than 6,000 NSW public school students. “I’m delighted to see the new designs for the hall projects as this is a really important program for our schools” Ms Mitchell said. The new and upgraded halls will be custom designed to suit each school’s needs, including features such as dedicated performing arts spaces, sports courts, canteen, and storage facilities, out of school hours care facilities and covered outdoor learning areas. “As part of the planning process for some of the halls, the Department of Education will look at opportunities for community use as well as the possibility of sharing some of the facilities with neighbouring schools in the area”. Current planning for halls includes developing a master plan and concept design, which will be shared with the local communities as the project progresses. The Department of Education is working to complete the detailed hall designs and initiate a tender process before the end of this year, with construction scheduled to start across all projects in early 2021. The NSW Government is investing $6.7 billion over four years to deliver more than 190 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW. r An artist’s impression of the design - Perspective of South West Facade Image Supplied

Santa to Lend a Hand to the Firies After a tough year for us all, planning is well and truly underway for the Annual Santa Run, through the streets of Regentville, Glenmore Park and Mulgoa Rise. Regentville Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) hope to be joined by the man in the big red suit, where they will be spreading some Christmas cheer to residents this month. Last year saw changes to dates and times of the Santa Run with the level of fire activity around the state. 2020 has seen many community events cancelled due to the pandemic. With COVID-19 still looming, it may change, however it is hoped that Santa’s visit on the fire truck will be safe for all. Each year, Santa calls upon the members from Regentville RFB to escort him around the local communities so he can check up on who’s been naughty and who’s been nice. He likes to walk around side by side with members playing his ‘little helpers’ with the fire truck in tow playing Christmas carols, flashing its lights and handing out lollies and other little goods, even for the family pet! “What we enjoy most about taking part in the Santa Run is being able to see the joy of both the young and the old when they realise the jolly man in a red suit is walking down their street. It is great to be able to talk to residents out of a time that would typically need the fire brigade in their attendance. Being able to have ‘normal’ conversations as well as providing tips on how they can better prepare their homes for the coming fire season and ensuring they have a Bush Fire Survival Plan is important” said Jordan Jobson of Regentville RFB. For more information on where and when the Santa Run will take place, be sure to head over to their Facebook page, NSW RFS – Regentville Brigade. Their brigade trains on Tuesday nights from 7pm and Saturdays from Midday and you can contact them on (02) 4733 1190. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with the NSW Rural Fire Service, you can also visit during these times at 20 Jeanette St, Regentville. v Harrison heads on down to Regentville RFB to make sure Santa has him on the nice list. Grant Assists With New Community Bus

Nepean Food Services (NFS), located in Regentville, is a wonderful and professional organisation delivering nutritious meals to residents across the Penrith region. Whilst Nepean Food Services are a member of the Meals on Wheels Association and they provide a Meals on Wheels service, they also provide social support and transport to a variety of functions as part of their service. As their focus is on proactive care, everything Nepean Food Services do is designed to support and assist older people in improving their capacity to perform daily living activities, supporting improved wellness and greater independence. With an ever-aging population and the desire for many seniors to ‘age-in-place’, the demand on Nepean Food Services is only growing. That is why Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, was pleased to support a grant application of $30,000 towards a new mini-bus that allows them to continue providing physical and social support for those in our community who need it most! This year has been particularly challenging for Nepean Food Services as COVID-19 has seen many volunteers (who are mostly retirees) be unable or anxious to volunteer. This essential community organisation relies on volunteers to assist in the distribution of meals and transportation of clients. If you are interested in volunteering, please call the office on 4733 7200. Any time you can give to supporting the vulnerable in our community is appreciated. r

0410 513 630 Millions of elves around the world have descended on their new homes for the next month. Whilst there, they will live on the shelves of families, having daily adventures with fun and a little mischief. Importantly, their job is to report back to Santa who has been naughty and nice. The Ciampi household is one family who have welcomed back William the Elf. “Our Elf is named William and he was given his name by our son Beau. William has been visiting Beau since he was 2 and he’s now 6, so 4 years now. We’ve heard whispers that William’s naughty brother is coming to visit us this year too” said Olivia Ciampi. This year’s adventures began a little bit different for William the Elf. Due to COVID-19, he arrived in a quarantine bubble, where he will stay for a week. Once he has completed his quarantine, he will only be allowed to travel from the North Pole to home at night, ensuring he stays COVID safe. William has been cheeky over the last few years. He managed to get a hold of Beau’s underwear before throwing them all over the Christmas tree! Beau’s superheroes took control of the situation the next night by taping William to the window when he tried to sneak one of his chocolates. “Every morning, Beau leaps out of bed and runs through the house to find where William has settled himself. His favourites are the messy pranks, including when he spilt flour on the floor and made flour angels. Beau talks to him about how his day was. He’s even apologised to William for some naughty behaviour to make sure that Santa got the message” laughed Olivia. Christmas is also a time for family traditions. The Ciampi’s enjoy nights looking at the local Christmas light displays together, watching Christmas Carols and of course, the music. “We have Michael Buble on repeat everywhere we go for December” ended Olivia.

Have you finished your Christmas shopping? Haven’t started? Got a few bits and pieces? A Dad said to me recently that he was getting so stressed about Christmas. He’s a single Dad raising three boys and he can’t afford much. I asked him what his stress was achieving and he said that he wasn’t getting much joy from life. I asked what his kids really needed, and he replied “a Dad that’s not stressed and that is there for them”. Kids need a parent that is present to their needs every day, not a parent that has a sack load of presents on Christmas Day. Sometimes parents think that buying expensive “educational” toys make their children do better academically. Children don’t need stuff, they need you. Research has shown that children learn more in social interaction with caring, interested, and more knowledgeable others. The more that parents talk with (not talk at) their children the better they do socially, emotionally, and academically. So your child will learn more from sitting down with you with a world atlas poster that cost you $1, and exploring and chatting about what you both see and know, than she will from the electronic world globe toy that cost you 120 bucks. Those plastic toys will cause more mess and stress, and will sooner or later end up in landfill, but the gift of your time and energy with your children will last a lifetime. I’ve seen this little poem doing the rounds. It is such a simple, lovely thing… • “Something they want • Something they need • Something to wear, and • Something to read.” The “something they need” could be a bit tricky. They might think they need the latest electronic thing-a-ma-jig. Or you may think you need to give it to them to prove your love for them. Ask yourself if the “gift” is going to create connection or disconnection? So many parents I speak to regret purchasing the electronic thing that has caused their child to become more isolated and withdrawn and then had the battle over having to place limits on it. Wishing you much joy and connection this holiday season.

The safety of you, your family and our staff are our number 1 priority.

Students to Get Extra Support Due to Remote Learning Disruptions This year has certainly been an interesting year for education across the globe. Here in Australia, the impact of COVID-19 has varied from state to state, with the full extent of impact not yet being realised. Last month, the NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, announced a plan to implement additional support within schools by offering the COVID Intensive Learning Support Program for students who have fallen behind due to remote learning. The NSW Department of Education will assist schools to identify students requiring this support and employ a selection of teachers to execute the program, which is set to be culminating in the form of intensive small group instruction within the school setting. The teachers will be selected from submitted expressions of interest and encompass a range of educational backgrounds and current work statuses; including casual teachers who were impacted by a lack of work during remote learning. Minister for Education, Sarah Mitchell explained, “We know that learning for many students stagnated during the pandemic and tuition in small groups will help reengage students in their schooling”. Whilst it is encouraging that the far-reaching impact of remote learning practices on vulnerable children is recognised, it will be interesting to see how equitable this program is in its availability to those who need it the most and how that will inevitably be determined. Either way, any support and additional funding for the education system in order to support the learning of our future generations is a welcome announcement. The scheme is set to be available to all school sectors and commence in Term 1, 2021.

Santa Photos With Your Pets Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2020 to take photos with your pets. Santa will be here from Tuesday 1st December until Thursday 24th December 2020, Mon-Fri (9am-5pm) and on Saturdays (9am2pm). Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Santa will be wearing a mask underneath his beard. We usually have a staff member taking the photograph of your pet with Santa, however to minimize the number of people in the room, we will require you to take your own photograph using your phone/camera, or with our camera where we can print off the photo for you. Only 1 client per pet will be allowed in the room at one time. Santa will be photographed with pets only. For a $10 cash donation, your Santa photo is presented in a Christmas card, with all proceeds donated to the Guide Dogs NSW. We have Christmas themed props for your pet’s photos (e.g. hats and scarves), feel free to bring in your own outfits. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. Penrith City Library launches Free App Penrith City Library has launched the new Library app, available for download on all iOS and Android devices. The app provides members with easy access to the library catalogue, electronic library, events, online study support, Library news and more. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM said the app was a great tool for the Library and members, especially during COVID-19 where many of the Library’s face-to-face events, activities and classes have moved online with services operating in a limited capacity. “The app is a great way for members to connect with the Library from the comfort of their own home to have access to the Library’s fantastic services,” Cr McKeown said. “The Library staff have put a lot of work into the app to ensure that it provides members with everything they could want at the touch of a button.” “The app provides members with the opportunity to book tickets for upcoming Library events, view the Library’s numerous resources, databases, and view the Penrith Local History blog that the Library’s Flashback Friday social posts come from. “With the functionality to link family member accounts under the one app and providing students study assistance with an online study tutor, the app is incredibly easy to use. I’d highly recommend members download the app,” she continued. The app was developed in collaboration with SOLUS and is available for free on iOS and Android devices under the app name “Penrith City Library”. For more information, visit “Library Branches” at penrith.city/library

Soaking & Sprouting – Increases Zinc Availability For Strong Knee Cartilage Soaking and sprouting are two very simple methods that can help you to remove a considerable portion of the antinutrients in foods. Both can significantly improve a food’s nutrient value for humans. These two simple steps are left out of food production processes and at-home cooking procedures. So, food-zinc remains unavailable for strong knee cartilage. Soaking grains, beans, nuts & seeds (seeds from now-on) ‘before cooking is recommended by scientists. Soaking simply means covering the seeds with cold water in a bowl, soaking 1218 hours. The process is simple, the benefits significant. Soaking pigeon-peas, for 6-18 hours reduces lectins by 38-50%, tannins by 13-25% and protease inhibitors by 28-30%. Discarding soaking water before cooking furth reduces antinutrients, with loss of some polyphenol antioxidants. If seeds are then cooked antinutrient contents reduce further. Studies show ‘soaking for 12h’ then ‘boiling for 80min’ is most effective for antinutrient removal and toxicants. Sprouting takes only slightly more time. Start off by soaking seeds as above, them discard soak-water, and rinse seeds thoroughly with clean water. Spin-off residual water and allow seeds to sit (dry, out of direct sunlight) in a bowl for a further 12 hours. Depending on the type of seed this ‘sitting-rinsing’ process is repeated 2-4 times, & sprouts develop. Sprouting reduces phytate by 37-81%; trypsin inhibitor significantly; lectins by 96%; increases vitamin C, B2, B3, and available protein; and dramatically increases protein digestibility. Sprouting also degrades galacto-oligosaccharides in seeds.

Galacto-oligosaccharides cannot be digested by humans and so pass undigested into the large intestine where they are broken down by our gut bacteria. Thus galacto-oligosaccharides in small amounts are prebiotics with health benefits, but above 20g/day they are the ingredient in legumes that can cause intestinal gas, bloating, stomach-cramps, and diarrhoea. Fermentation is an even better method for removing antinutrient factors from seeds. Antinutrient content of fermented seed flour is very low compared with germinated and roasted seed flour. Soaking/Sprouting and fermentation can be combined, together with cooking for an additive reduction in antinutrient content and an increase in nutrient availability of foods processed this way. We’ll look at fermentation next edition.

We made it! We’re on the cusp of Christmas. This year it’s about ‘virtual carols’ and ‘set times’ with Santa, capped dining limits for Christmas lunch and ‘Zoom’ replacing interstate travel. While it is clearly apparent that Christmas will be ‘different’ this year, it’s still very much worthy of celebrating. We’re celebrating the joy of spending time, be it physical or virtual, with friends, family and loved ones. Making magic of moments that become forever embedded in our memories. This year be thankful and grateful for what we have, rather than what we don’t or should. Find the magic. The team here at the District Gazette are grateful for the support of both our readers and local business advertisers - without you the challenges of 2020 would have been amplified. From our family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy Christmas with better blessings in 2021. I’ll end it this year with this.....’In a world where you can be anything, be kind’ Enjoy Your Community News.
