Kelsey Loves Big School! It’s that time of year, where thousands of girls and boys across the state wave goodbye to their parents as they start ‘big school’ for the first time. One of those children starting school for the first time was local girl Kelsey Brown. Four and a half year old Kelsey is the youngest of five siblings and just couldn’t wait for her big day walking through the gates at Surveyors Creek Public School. When asked what she liked the most about starting big school, Kelsey said “having play time with my friends outside”. This year, Kelsey joined her two big brothers Bailey and Callum at the local school. Having also completed preschool in Glenmore Park, she was lucky to have her two best friends from the same preschool Sarah and Gemma also start at the school. “There were certainly mixed emotions on Kelsey’s first day at school. We were all excited for Kelsey, but also sad that our baby was starting school. I will certainly miss my little girl” said Deborah Brown, Kelsey’s Mum. Kelsey already has a new-found confidence with starting school and has already set her sights on what she wants to be when she finishes school; “I want to work with my Mum at her work Lollylicious” she said. We would like to wish all those students who began their school journey the very best of luck this year.  Kelsey begins her school journey | Image Supplied

Emma Channels Her Inner Adele To many people, British songstress Adele is an inspiration who touches hearts all around the world with her soulful voice and meaningful songs like ‘Rolling In The Deep’, ‘Rumour Has It’ and ‘Hello’. One such person who has been inspired by her is local talented voice coach and singer Emma Kirk, who launched her show ‘The Adele Experience’ last year, performing as Adele. Emma’s musical resume is very impressive, beginning at the age of just 9 years of age. This lead her to singing professionally at the age of 15 doing singing quests in the club circuit and joining a local band. Since then, she has performed alongside many well-known Australian artists such as John Farnham, Jimmy Barnes, Guy Sebastian, Human Nature, Christine Anu, Marcia Hines and Deni Hines. Since launching ‘The Adele Experience’ at Evan Theatre in 2016, the show is running successfully throughout Sydney, Regional New South Wales and has received rave reviews on various cruise ship brands such as P&O and Princess Cruises. “Anytime I performed an Adele song, I would get a great reaction or response from my audience, so I did a little research and decided to produce my own showâ€? said Emma. “She has also inspired me to have belief in myself as a performer in regards to not worrying about the status of body image in the music industry as she has a very ‘just do it’ attitude. This helped me launch myself as a soloistâ€? she explained. Covering Adele’s music and her vocal range is no mean feat and is testament to just how talented Emma really is. “It can be vocally challenging at times if my voice is not healthy, but most times I feel singing her songs comes quite naturally for me. I studied her voice for quite some time to ensure I captured her vocal styleâ€? replied Emma. Despite her close affinity to Adele, Emma is yet to meet her musical inspiration; “I would love the honour of meeting her one day, purely to thank her for her music and inspiration to pursue my own musical dreams. I’m not sure if she knows about my shows, but I hope that if she does, she feels proud that I do her justiceâ€?. For more information about Emma Kirk’s amazing show, visit www.theadeleexperience.com. AROUND TOWN!

New Traffic Lights at Bradley Street Mulpha Norwest has invested in key infrastructure around its Mulgoa Rise residential estate in Western Sydney, including the installation of traffic lights to relieve traffic congestion at the Bradley Street and The Northern Road intersection. During the Christmas break, the traffic lights were activated by the Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP and Councillor Tricia Hitchen. This infrastructure is part of the continuing investment by Mulpha Norwest in the Western Sydney growth corridor, enabling the continued roll out of housing to accommodate Western Sydney’s growing population. When complete, Mulgoa Rise will provide quality housing for in excess of 600 families, supporting the NSW Government’s strategy to develop sustainable communities that accommodate Western Sydney’s growing population, and help make home ownership a reality for more young families.

FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

A Surprising Discovery Our family has been living in Glenmore Park for 20 years. We love it. In fact, there is so much to love; the people, that it is close to the Blue Mountains, and especially we love our Church at Glenmore Park Anglican. Towards the end of last year, after recovering from major ankle surgery, I was able to get back into something I also love – walking. On a few maps I’d seen that on the edges of Glenmore Park there were walking tracks in the “Mulgoa Nature Reserve” so I thought, I’d check it out. What a surprising discovery! Real bushland! It was peaceful, quiet, with amazing birdlife, kangaroos and wild flowers. The more I explored the more I found. The Mulgoa Cliffs. Waterholes. It was like I was a million miles from anywhere. And the thing was, we’d been living in Glenmore Park for 20 years, and we never knew about it! For a lot of people this surprising discovery is exactly what their experience of Jesus is like. People have heard of Jesus but they either know nothing or little of him. In the 20 years we have been at Glenmore Park Anglican we meet people like this all the time. People of all ages, and at all stages of life, who take the plunge and who come along to Church on Sunday or who join one of our groups and ministries throughout the week and who make the surprising discovery

about Jesus. They discover the real Jesus, the Jesus who says in the book of John in the Bible, “I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.” It is amazing to hear the testimony of these people as they share how Jesus has transformed their life. We’d love for everyone to know the difference that the real Jesus will make to your life. Give us a call, check us out on Facebook or just turn up on Sunday – we’d love to meet you!. Rev John Lavender

Trip of a Lifetime for One Lucky Glenmore Park Student!

One lucky student from Glenmore Park High School will take part in the trip of a lifetime to Western Front battlegrounds as part of the 2017 Premier’s ANZAC Memorial Scholarship. Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP and Minister for Veterans Affairs David Elliott announced that Glenmore Park High School was among 21 schools from around NSW which will take part in the scholarship program this year. “This is a wonderful opportunity for a student to represent their school and their community,” Tanya Davies said. Premier’s scholars will take part in a 12-day tour of the Western Front in Europe, travelling to significant Australian battlefields in Belgium and France. “Having the opportunity to learn and understand the true

meaning of the ANZAC spirit is something quite special,” said Tanya Davies. They will also take part in commemoration events in the town of Ypres in Belgium, and pay their respects to the 38,000 Australian soldiers who lost their lives there 100 years ago. More than 130 Government, Catholic and Independent schools across the state entered the ballot for the scholarship. The 21 successful schools will choose one student to take part. Students from the 21 schools will be asked to prepare a piece of work based on the Centenary of ANZAC. Each school will select one winner to participate in the tour. Minister Elliott said the tour will bring to life the history of the First World War and offer students new insight into Australia’s wartime history and the birth of the ANZAC legend. “The successful student will join scholars from around NSW and take part in what will likely be one of the most memorable experiences of their school career,” Minister Elliott said. “I look forward to meeting Glenmore Park High School’s scholar when the successful students are announced in March this year.  Image Supplied

FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School

Living 2017 on Purpose Because our lives are sacred and important, it is worth thinking about how we will live them in 2017. I mean, what our strategy will be for living our life. This might sound strange, but we have strategies for things like how to pay off a loan or how to achieve a difficult task, so how much more important to think this way about a chunk of our lives – the year ahead! For most of us the end of the holidays means resuming the same whirlwind of activities that we tore ourselves away from before Christmas. They are there waiting to grab us again, and they do so before we have time to think about what we are doing. One approach to the year ahead is to say: “That’s how it is, so back to the whirlwind.” Another approach is to think about some guiding principles, or things that you believe to be right and good – worth doing for some reason. For example, you might believe that it is a good thing to stop consistently to “smell the roses”, to stay physically fit, or to prioritise frequent quality time for those you love. You might believe that doing something good for the needy is right and good. As a follower of Jesus, his teaching and what he did with his life; provide guiding principles that I follow – principles with such a depth of wisdom and power for living well that it convinces me that he had divine insight into the human soul. Once you have identified your own guiding principles, they can help you focus your time and energy, and spend your money, on what you believe to be good and right...to live on purpose… rather than just being caught up in the whirlwind. This makes what we do more meaningful, and when we find meaning in the things we do, we will also find joy in doing them. And this is good for our souls. Go well as you live 2017 on purpose, Paul

The Country Show Returns A little bit of Mount Panorama will descend on Luddenham Showground on the 18th and 19th of February as the historic grounds will rumble to the roar of the 500-horse power V8 donks as Holden and Ford Utes scream around the main arena. All the way from Adelaide, the Trackskill V8 Race Ute Show is unquestionably one of Australia’s most spectacular car stunt teams and has been seen all over the country. Another feature will see these daring drivers pit their talents again a horse, bike and supped up lawnmower in an obstacle course. Living up to its motto of ‘The Country Show’, the annual event takes place for the 113th time on the picturesque Luddenham Showgrounds. The event is run entirely by a small, but very hard working committee, many of whom can trace their family’s association with the show all the way back to the first one. The show will kick off each morning with horse classes held on the main arena, known through the equine industry as one of the major lead up events to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. There will be cowboys battling it out with rank bulls in the open bull ride including rodeo champions of the future in the steer and poddy calf rides. The main arena will feature the dog high jump contest, yank-a-ute for the adults and yank-a-buggy for the kids. If artistic ability is more your style, there will be classes of painting, photography, quilt making, flowers, homebrew, farm produce and even Lego building. Always renowned for the quality stage entertainment, there will be a talent quest, reptile displays with a difference, clowns and shearing demos. The main band this year is ‘Rough Stock’, back by popular demand, this great country-rock band hails from Riverstone. And, of course, the fireworks on Saturday night will be under the control of Foti’s, who are responsible for the Sydney Harbour New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show. Held in adjoining paddock will be the ever-popular sheep dog trials on Sunday. The day will also see the well-liked wood chopping contest. The stage program will include events such as ice cream eating, whip cracking and the Luddenham Country Kid hitting the stage. The Luddenham Show Committee would like to extend their sincere thanks to the 2017 Champion Sponsors; Workers Hubertus Country Club Luddenham and Catholic Cemetarys. Without their valued support and that of all the sponsors and volunteers, it would be impossible to run the show. For more information on ‘The Country Show’, find them on Facebook, visit their website or call 4773 4378.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com Children don’t learn skills in a vacuum. Although there is a huge amount of pressure for children to learn a vast array of skills at school, the first and most enduring lessons are learnt at home within the context of the family and parent-child relationship. Parents are a child’s first teacher. This year, I will focus on skills that you can teach your children within the family environment. Recently, a parent said to me that her mother told her not to worry about her children squabbling and fighting. Grandma said “they’ll learn to sort it out themselvesâ€?. The mother asked me “is this right?’. I replied that children aren’t born with conflict resolution or problem solving skills. These skills need to be taught like you would teach a child to tie his/her shoe laces or use their manners. If “left to itâ€?, most children will resort to using yelling, aggression, or withdrawal to resolve conflict because frankly that is what is role modelled for them most of the time. Problem Solving 1. State what the problem is. Most children (and many adults) will blame someone else for the conflict. I get children to state the problem in an objective way, without blame. Instead of saying “Jamie won’t share the ball with meâ€?, we get to a point where the problem is stated as “we both want to play with the ballâ€?. Blame is a dead end street, we get stuck and can’t find a way out. 2. After the problem is stated, we then have to come up with some solutions to the problem. Children as young as 5 can usually come up with 4 or 5 solutions. It doesn’t matter to me if it is a silly solution (for example, ‘take the ball off Jamie’), because the next step sorts that out. I rarely provide children with a solution, because I don’t want them to become dependent on me to solve their problems. I want them to learn the skill and use it. 3. For each of the solutions, ask: • Is it safe? • Is it fair? • How will other people feel about it? • Will it work? 4. Choose the best solution, and apply it. 5. Review how it worked. If it didn’t work, try another solution. You will need to be really consistent in supporting children to learn and use this skill. It will take longer than a year of consistent use. Over on my blog (https://handsheartsminds.wordpress. com/), I am going to be writing about the types of skills that we as parents need to teach children to give them great life skills. I have counted at least 30. I will also be trying to add a visual that you can download and put on the fridge or your noticeboard. So keep an eye on the blog and this column.

Preseason Training Nights will kick off from the week of the 7th February, with the first 2 being recommended for all who are considering playing AFL and wanting to meet the club members and just have a go to see if it is the sport for them. On both nights, a free BBQ will be available for everyone wanting to check it out. The annual Rumble in the Jungle Trial Day will then take place at the end of March, with the official season launch on 2nd April, 2017. During the year, the Lions will also host of number of prestige events including the Annual Trivia Night, the Sportsman’s Lunch and, for the first time, the Shopping Bus Trip. It is never too late to decide that AFL is the sport for your family – registrations for both Auskick and Junior AFL can be made online by following the link on the Lions webpage. A club registration will be held on the preseason night on 7th February commencing at 6pm, for new or existing members. No pre-existing skills are required to get involved – just a willingness to give it a go! For further information about playing AFL for your local club in 2017, please contact the Emu Plains Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL Club via the webpage (www.lionsafl.com.au) or on Facebook.

THE BUSINESS BUILDER

Article Written + Submitted by: Zoltan Szentirmay Founder of CFO@CALL | Author of “WHY BUSINESSES STOP GROWING and What You can do About it” P: 1300 854 480 E: admin@cfoatcall.com.au W: cfoatcall.com.au

New Year - New Direction New Year – new beginnings! It’s time to take stock and refocus, assess where we want our businesses to be in a year from now. How did your 2016 go? Reflect on what has happened. Where are you now? Where do you want to be twelve months from now? What is your specific plan for 2017 to blow it out of the water? How do we plan to get there? Write it down. A good place to start is the One Page Business Plan. It shouldn’t be complicated. If you want everyone in the company on the same page, then you need literally to get everything onto one page. The one-page strategy allows business leaders to boil everything down to its simplest form and align it with core values, purpose, a BHAG (big hairy audacious goal) and action items. In short: every company with revenue at or approaching $1 million, and up to $250 million, should create a one-page plan. Here are the 4 Steps needed to complete a One Page Business Plan: 1. Determine your Purpose or Core Values The “should” and “should nots” of the company are its values. What is the organisation at its core? Developing four to five core values is important to business identity and culture, but they shouldn’t be manufactured. Write them down. Don’t create new values unnecessarily. Purpose is another consideration, and it goes hand-in-hand with core values. Why does the organisation exist? What’s its point? Getting a clear understanding of purpose and values is the first step toward creating strategies and plans. 2. Identify your BHAG. Every business needs a big hairy audacious goal, or BHAG. This is the Everest the organisation will climb over the next 10 to 30 years. The goal can be qualitative or quantitative, but it should be measurable. The BHAG is where the company sees itself down the road, so all plans and strategies should work toward getting it there. It is good to remind ourselves that in business and in life, the

10 February 2017

www.glenmoregazette.com.au

journey, not the destination, is the reward. 3. Choose The Right KPI’s. Strategies and plans need to be measured in a way that makes sense for the organisation. Key performance indicators and critical numbers should line up with the brand promises, and brand promises should reflect the core values and purpose. Everything must be aligned. At that point, by using actual quantitative metrics to guide people within the business, you can easily measure the success of individuals and teams. When teams reach their goals, reward their performance. Choose rewards that align with the brand. 4. Break it all Down into Action Items that are Accountable and ‘Owned.’ To achieve the key metrics needed, everyone at the company needs a clear role and understanding of his or her responsibilities. So, assign action items to specific people and set straightforward expectations. Inform everyone on roles and responsibilities throughout the company: Teams need to know who is doing what to avoid confusion and to get the work done efficiently. If not, as the plan changes, responsibilities may get blurred. It should be a dynamic process that changes on a regular basis. The faster you grow, the more often you update it. There’s an old quote I love... “If you aim at nothing, you’ll hit it every time” - Zig Ziglar Certainly, it’s great to have a flawless business plan, your sales figures right and your market and consumer behaviour analysis near perfect. But this is not usually the case; regardless of those midnight inspirations, the feverish work, plans drawn up with angel investors. Instead, an entrepreneur with big ambitions should pursue six distinct strategies: 1. Build a business plan. 2. Get an advisor/partner. 3. Define branding and marketing strategy. 4. Get help. 5. Create a budget-friendly marketing plan 6. Be nimble, for a business pivot.

Valentine’s Day, you either love it or hate it, are a hopeless romantic or a true cynic when it comes to the warm and fuzzy heart stuff. The fact is; about 90 per cent of the people in the age group of 18-24 and 45 per cent of people above 50; are said to celebrate the annual event in Australia on February 14th, and according to stvalentinesday.org surveys; men in Australia are more romantic and open about expressing their love compared to Australian women. So what will you be doing this Valentine’s Day? The heart filled day originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honouring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world. Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is an annual holiday celebrated on February 14. The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards. Keep things simple when expressing your love, a simple card or a nice romantic dinner might be all they need. If you’re single why not treat yourself to one of your favourite things. If you would like to send your special someone a eco friendly message why not visit www.123greetings.com and send them an e-card. Spread the love, feel the tingles and enjoy the warm and fuzzy.  Image: pexels.com

Researchers at Western Sydney University are looking for participants for a study exploring the long-term experiences of losing a parent during childhood. There is a growing body of knowledge regarding childhood loss and grief, but little is known about adults who have lived with childhood parental death and their subsequent parenting experiences. To better understand this sensitive issue, researchers from the School of Nursing and Midwifery are inviting parents who have experienced childhood parental death to share their experiences. Lead Researcher Dr. Gill Murphy says the study will give a voice to those who may have lived with long standing grief. “This study will generate significant new information about helpful responses for children who experience the unfortunate death of a parent,” says Dr. Murphy. “This new knowledge will highlight potential interventions to support children and adults in their journeys of loss and recovery.” “It will also be relevant for health and social care professionals who are working with families who lost a parent.” The research team is calling for participants who are happy to meet with Dr. Murphy, to take part in the study. In particular, the researchers are looking for English speaking adults who lost a parent as a child and who are now a parent themselves.

$2000 Guide Dog Donation from the Santa Photos with Pets Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2016 and photos were taken with your pets. We all enjoyed watching your pets get dressed up with Santa hats and scarves and sitting on Santa’s knee for a photo. With a lot of laughs and giggles, we took many cute Santa photos. Thank you for all of the donations for the photos. With your great support, we raised $2000 for The Guide Dogs NSW/ACT!! Wow!! We all had lots of fun and The Guide Dogs get a great donation. Thanks again for participating. Too much fun!!

Keeping Your Pets Safe in the Heat Wave With the unrelenting hot weather, it is important to look after your pets: • Provide shelter for your pets, so they get away from direct sunlight. • Provide plenty of water. Animals do not sweat like humans and they rely on the evaporation of the water in their mouths to cool themselves down. So they need extra water so they do not overheat. • Provide extra water sources in case they are spilled. • Provide kiddy pools so your pet can lay in the water. • Bring your pets indoors with air conditioning, if possible.

• Consider day boarding in air conditioning. • Avoid exercising your pets during the heat of the day. Walk them in the early morning, or later at night when it is cooler. • Do not leave pets in a car or vehicle. • If your pet has a medical condition, they may be more prone to heat stroke: e.g. obesity; Brachycephalic breeds (shortnosed/flat-faced) e.g. Pugs, English bull dogs, French bulldogs, Pekingese and Persian and Himalayan cats; Respiratory disease/ breathing problems - laryngeal paralysis, collapsing trachea; Thick/long hair coat; Heart problems/Cardiovascular disease; Extremes in age (young/old); Neurological disease.

Signs of Heat Stroke Common signs include: Incessant panting; Drooling, salivating; Agitation, restlessness; Very red or pale gums; Bright red tongue; Increased heart rate; Breathing distress; Vomiting, Diarrhoea (possibly with blood); Signs of mental confusion, delirium; Dizziness, staggering; Lethargy; weakness; Muscle tremors; Seizures; Collapsing and lying down; Little to no urine production; Coma or Death. How do you treat a pet with heatstroke? First step is to instigate Emergency First Aid by bathing your pet in cool water. Heat stroke is a life threatening emergency - always see a vet. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out our Facebook, website www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027.

Calcium Supplements For Bone Strength: The Hidden Dangers Calcium and bone health, a huge topic & almost impossible to do it justice without writing a book!! But this month I’ll look at the possible down sides to calcium supplements. Calcium supplement can be dangerous for two reasons. In the short-term, excess calcium intake (usually above 4g Ca / day, but incidents have been reported with as little as 1g) can lead to Milk-alkali syndrome - headache, mental clouding, nausea, vomiting and renal failure. This has been more common recently among older women due in part to emphasis on calcium therapy for osteoporosis, especially when combined with OTC medicines for reflux. In the long term mounting evidence links the taking of ‘calcium supplements to prevent bone-loss’ to an increased risk of death from heart attack. Much recent research has made this link, but the research also says that when higher calcium intakes were achieved from just food (no supplements) risk of cardiovascular actually decreased. Calcium concentration in the blood stream is very tightly controlled at a level of 1.25mM per litre of blood. This control is maintained over a wide range of calcium intake ‘from food’, but it’s not maintained when calcium comes from supplements. Research has shown that 9% of women taking calcium

supplements had evidence of hypercalcemia (high blood calcium), 31% had hypercalcuria (excess calcium spilling into urine). Importantly it seems that when calcium is taken as a supplement little of ‘the additional calcium‌ is incorporated into bone by adults’, but instead, ‘it may lead to calcium accumulation in the body, i.e. it can deposit in & calcify our arteries and other soft-tissues of the body. Calcification of the arteries causes hardening & increases risk of death from heart attack. This is where vitamin K, so important for strengthening bone (see previous article) comes in again. A large percentage of the population on western diets are Vitamin K deficient especially those with bowel issues. Vitamin K allows production of a protein called MGP by cells of your artery wall. This protein stops calcification of arteries. Foods like green leafy vegetables that are high in both calcium and vitamin K help keep bones strong and arteries uncalcified and elastic! So why not just add vitamin K to Ca supplements? This happens, but remember that human calcium physiology (including bones and arteries) is dependent on many substances, not just calcium and vitamin K! A correct diet provides all the factors for this physiology to work properly.

FROM EDITOR FROM THE THE EDITOR Welcome to our first edition for 2017! I know the Christmas and New Year period raced by in a blur for many, and here we are, already facing what February has in store. The New Year period is always my favourite. A great time to refocus and set goals. The perfect opportunity to take onboard any challenges from years gone by, learn and grow from them. It's these challenges that have made us stronger and more determined to reach our newest goals. We return with all of our regular columns that provide a great wealth of information across a broad cross-section of topics; add to this a great variety of stories from sport, to arts. We have something for everyone! It's back to school for many students across our community, and who can forget that very first introduction to BIG school? Our lead story captures the excitement and emotions of this wonderful chapter! Starting school is an important step in a child's life, enjoy the ride. I stumbled across this saying recently, and wanted to share it with you; for how true it is. "Create a life that feels good on the inside; not one that just looks good on the outside." Enjoy your Community News.
