Go Back in Time with Penrith City Library’s 2022 Local History Calendar Travel back in time and discover interesting facts about Penrith’s history with Penrith City Library’s 2022 Local History Calendar. Calendars are now available at all three Library branches for $5. The Library’s Research Services team has mined the archives of their extensive photographic collection and pulled together another great historical calendar for history lovers. The 2022 calendar focuses on the “before” and “after” of some of Penrith’s well-loved locations, buildings and businesses that have played and, in some cases, still play a pivotal role in local society. Penrith City Council’s General Manager Warwick Winn commended the Library for another great calendar history lovers will enjoy. “The Library’s Research Services team has once again outdone themselves with the Local History Calendar. “You’ll see familiar buildings such as James Hope’s General Store, The Towers, Penrith railway and locations such as Mulgoa Road and Kingswood,” Mr Winn said. “The calendar is a great platform for Penrith City Library to showcase their wonderful photographic collection which includes photographs donated by residents over the years,” he said. The photographs included in the calendar are from the Library’s Photographic Collection, which is accessible via Penrith Library’s Catalogue in the Local Archives Search at library. penrith.city

History Made as New Council Appoints Mayor, Deputy Mayor Penrith City Council’s Mayoral election will be embedded in Penrith’s great story as an historic moment, with the outgoing female Mayor passing the baton to another female for the first time in Council’s 150-year history. The recently formed 15-member Council elected longstanding Councillor Tricia Hitchen as Mayor of Penrith City
during the recent Ordinary Meeting and watched on as Councillor Karen McKeown OAM handed over the Mayoral chains. Cr McKeown expressed her “heartfelt congratulations” to Cr Hitchen and paused to reflect on the pivotal event. “It is a momentous occasion for this Council - in 150 years it’s the first time a female Mayor has handed the chains to an incoming female Mayor and I really take great pride in that,” Cr McKeown said. Penrith’s new Mayor will serve a twoyear term with Councillor John Thain elected to be Deputy Mayor through to September 2022. Cr Hitchen, a retired police officer who was first elected to Council in 2012, has served two terms as Deputy Mayor since 2016. After being elected unopposed, Cr Hitchen said she had looked back on the past 10 years and how much Penrith has changed, in particular the many new estates which have been developed including Thornton, Caddens, and Twin Creeks. She said it’s an exciting time for Penrith with several transformative projects taking shape, such as the Regatta Park upgrade, the Police Cottage refurbishment, City Park, and the Soper Place car park revitalisation. “Given the success of these projects in Penrith, we now have the opportunity to expand similar projects into St Marys and the eastern part of our LGA, to synchronise with the Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport,” Cr Hitchen said. “St Marys has a unique opportunity to grow and provide our residents with an exciting shopping experience, CBD and lifestyle,” she said. Cr Hitchen is currently a volunteer director of The Haven – Nepean Women’s Shelter. She is an active member of Council’s Access Committee, Local Traffic Committee and is on the board of St Marys Town Centre. Cr Hitchen strongly advocates for people with disabilities through her own experiences of having a child with special needs, which has seen the introduction of more accessible spaces in the St Marys and Penrith CBDs. In recent years, Cr Hitchen has started a local community garden at Kingswood, been vocal about her concerns regarding the overdevelopment of Oxley Park and pushed for an upgraded off-leash dog park in St Clair. New Deputy Mayor Cr Thain, who was also elected unopposed on Monday evening, has been a Penrith Councillor since 1999. He first served as Deputy Mayor in 2004-2005 and has been in the

Mayoral role twice, in 2005-2006 and again from 2016-2018.

Pool Fences Save Lives
Penrith City Council is issuing a warning about defective and unfenced swimming pools, and is calling on residents to ensure all pools – especially inflatable pools – are properly fenced off. Penrith City Council’s General Manager, Warwick Winn said residents shouldn’t forego their family’s safety as they look to enjoy the warmer months. “Inflatable pools are a cheap way to keep cool, but they can also be a source of tragedy,” Mr Winn said. “Portable and inflatable pools have the same drowning risk as permanent pools which is something most people neglect. “Too often shoppers look at the cheap cost of these inflatable pools without thinking of the safety requirements to operate them.” Active supervision by an adult is the best protection against drowning, but a pool barrier is another layer of protection if supervision is interrupted. Children aged under five continue to be the age group that accounts for the largest number of drowning deaths in swimming pools in Australia. It is important to ensure that home pools, including portable and inflatable pools that hold 30cm of water or more are properly fenced with a self-closing and self-latching gate. Often toddlers wander around backyards and get into trouble because the pool is unfenced, or the gate is propped open. “Many people don’t realise when they buy one of these inflatable pools that it’s illegal to have an unfenced pool in a backyard, this is not only to simply obey the law, but to make sure your family members or their play mates are safe,” Mr Winn said. Council has a zero tolerance compliance program and will issue on the spot fines of $550 if it is found that the gate of a pool has been propped open or there is an unfenced portable or inflatable pool. For more information on safety requirements visit penrith.city/poolsafety or call Council on 4732 7897.
Construction to Begin for Glenmore Village
ELECTRICIANS WANTED Get ready for a new shopping, dining and entertainment experience which is set to start construction in February. Glenmore Village is Western Sydney’s next highly anticipated development. Located in the heart of Glenmore Park, the mixed-use development will be anchored by some of Australia’s best retailers while also adding a strong dash of local flavour. With pre-lease commitments from Woolworths, Australia Post, MediAdvice and a range of specialty shops, Glenmore Village will cater to the community’s needs. Developer and builder, Beaini Projects, has canvassed local residents to find out what the area needs. One of the key attributes of the centre will be a licenced eat street, which the developer is currently seeking naming ideas for. This dining experience will include indoor and outdoor dining. “We are aiming to have destination dining experiences in our eat street. A wide range of food choices to compliment the creative design” a spokesperson for Beaini Projects commented. Glenmore Village will have 145 apartments built on top of the retail podium offering a convenient lifestyle with literally everything at your doorstep. Construction is due to commence in February 2022, with completion envisaged for the end of 2023. Along with the adjoining school, this development will deliver the longpromised amenities for Mulgoa Rise and surrounds. Lucky local residents were given the opportunity to secure an apartment before the public launch in February. PRD Managing Director, Mr Darren Latty, was not surprised to see 20 residents secure their apartment before the actual launch. “We have a range of 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments set over 3 levels. What really makes this design appealing is the private podium access that the residences get to enjoy, with the luxurious convenience of shopping at your front door. One of our buyers of a 3-bedroom apartment before Christmas said they would literally never have to leave the Village” Mr Latty said. The sales suite, located at 90-98 Glenmore Ridge Drive, Glenmore Park, will be open to the public in February 2022. To find out more contact, Darren 0414 620532 or darren@prd. net.au.

However, it was The Royce’s connection to the local Western Sydney community which impressed the judging panel the most – something the team has had worked hard to foster from day one. A Fresh Start Do you like that new car smell? It reminds you that everything around you is new and everything works the way it should. No broken switches or lights that don’t work. The air-con pumps out cold air and there is a new set of gadgets to play with. A new year can feel that way as well. It is as though everything has a chance to make a fresh start. Wouldn’t it be great if you waved a magic wand and put the whole pandemic thing behind us? That would certainly feel like a fresh start! Life is full of moments when we can make a fresh start. It might be at work or at school or in the relationships in our families. We might need to be gracious enough to others to let them make a fresh start or have the courage to make a fresh start ourselves. God knows that each one of us needs a fresh start with him. It’s easy to feel that it is impossible to have a fresh start with God. However, he is amazingly kind and loves to give us a fresh start with him. Not a fresh start so we can try harder, but a fresh start to understand his love for us despite the mess we make of life. On a bigger picture, the Bible teaches that God is making all things new. Ultimately, he is going to fix everything in our wayward world. That is something we can look forward to! FAITH - FOOTHILLS CHURCH

Breaking Out of COVID Gloom New COVID measures in place. Again. Our amazing front-line health workers stretched to the limit. Talk of breakthrough. The numbers explode again. Theories flying around over a beer and on social media. But on and on it goes. Many people I talk to are tired. A proverb in the Bible captures it: “A hope deferred makes the heart grow sick.” So, what is the antidote? I suggest it is to reflect on the immense amount of good in our lives. I mean simple but rich things that perhaps we take for granted. Things, people, or experiences that bless and animate our souls and sometimes without our conscious awareness of it. I mean looking at the particular contours of our life as gifts. I am drawn to reflect on my wife as a priceless gift. Each of my five children add colour and happiness (along with the hard stuff ). We tried for some years to have children without success, so the simple fact of my kids reminds me of the goodness of life. We just went camping down the south coast enjoying crisp sea air and surf. Good things. Closer to home we are harvesting vegetables from our garden. The corn succulent and sweet as! Even if the corn came from Woolies, savouring it with butter and a sprinkle of salt and pepper is a reminder of what is good if we allow it to. And as the new year kicks off, I can think of opportunities ahead. Ways to add fire to my soul, to address failures. To find contentment. To live. My spirit rises thinking about it. Good things. I could go on. What is good in your life? It strikes me that most of what is good in my life is unchanged by COVID. I see this as a sign that God and his goodness prevails. It makes me feel that God is close to us. It brings hope. I urge you to reflect on the immense goodness in your own life and despite the COVID gloom to let your spirit dance.

Jackson is Taking Care of Business
Glenmore Park student Jackson O’Mara is our latest kidpreneur, starting his own business with his Dad Luke, LOJO Mowing Services recently. The enterprising 11-year-old started the business in November 2021, just a few short months ago. The name of the business, LOJO, comes from the local father and son’s initials in their names - Luke O’Mara/Jackson O’Mara. The small business specialises in residential lawn and garden care, such as lawn mowing, edging, hedge trimming, weeding, and gardening. They do one off jobs or continual maintenance such as fortnightly visits. They also provide fertilising and weeding products if people need that done too. The areas that they cover include the Nepean and Blue Mountains. “Jackson has a lot of expensive hobbies, like woodchopping! He wanted a way to earn more pocket money but isn’t a fan of housework. He just loves the outdoors, loves keeping busy, and he’s always helped his dad out with maintaining the lawns” explained Rachael O’Mara, Jackson’s Proud Mum. The school holidays have been the perfect opportunity for Jackson to work on his business and he enjoys the job and the opportunity to be able to help the local community. “What Jackson enjoys most about the job is being outdoors, helping people get their lawn and gardens looking nice, spending time with his Dad and, of course earning money” Rachael said to the Glenmore Gazette. If you would like to get behind Jackson, search ‘LOJO Mowing Services’ on Facebook. You can also contact Luke O’Mara on 0411 486316 for a free quote. A Walk Like No Other
Local Matthew Reid is set for the Walk for Terry Fox next month, a walk that will see him start at Glenmore Park and finish in Canberra, all whilst raising much needed funds for charity. Setting out from Glenmore Park High School on Monday 28th March, the walk will take 10 days to complete, finishing at the High Commission of Canada in Canberra and covering just under 300 kms. Matthew will be raising money for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead. With a goal to raise $40,000, he has already raised an amazing $22,500 for the charity. The charity walk was originally planned for September last year and has had to be rescheduled due to the pandemic. “I will be taking part in the walk to raise awareness about the amazing legacy and achievements of Terry Fox, whilst raising valuable funds for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead” explained Matthew to the Glenmore Gazette. Terry Fox was a young Canadian who, despite having an artificial leg, participated in the Marathon of Hope, a cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research and awareness. Terry would run for 143 days over a distance of 5,373 kms before stopping due to primary cancer spreading into his lungs. Today, the Terry Fox Foundation has raised over $800 million to support cancer research and the Terry Fox Run now takes place in over 40 countries around the world. Last year saw Matthew organise Terry Fox Walks at two local schools, Glenmore Park High School and Mulgoa Public School. “I have plans to get more local schools involved with the walk this year” he said. A BBQ fundraiser held at Silverdale just before Christmas raised $1,750, thanks to the BBQ and the kind donations from the local community. An 80’s music themed disco this month to be held locally is due to be announced shortly. Matthew is training hard and is ready for the challenging walk. “I’m currently boxing, rowing, and cycling 3-4 times a week. On top of this, I’m also doing a lot of walking. Thank you to everyone that has supported me so far on this journey” Matthew shared. To support Matthew in his quest, visit his fundraising page at https://www.bandagedbear.org.au/fundraisers/ httpswwwfacebookcomevents379120765961877. PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Monica Purcell | Family Facilitator Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services W: www.nepeancommunity.org.au E: info@nepeancommunity.org.au
Parents Cannot Afford to “Switch Off” When it Comes to Kids and Technology Much of our digital world has not been built with the safety of children in mind, and recent media coverage has highlighted the risks. Given the scale of the problem, caregivers understandably feel overwhelmed. When we face tremendous challenges, a common human response is to ignore, deny or delay responding. What this sometimes looks like in families is leaving children to their own devices (quite literally!) Navigating the internet is like driving a car. It’s not only about whether a child or young person can operate the technology (growing up in the digital age, children and young people often adapt faster to new technology than adults do!). It’s about whether they have the cognitive, social, and emotional maturity to appropriately handle challenges in the online space. Top tips for preparing children to use the internet: Children need supervision, guidance, and support to be good digital citizens. From the beginning, explain that owning or operating devices is a privilege, not a right. Clearly articulate the limits, and let your child know that continued use of a device depends on their capacity to use it safely and appropriately. You will be most effective if you can understand and join your child’s digital world. Learn about their favourite places or activities, who they connect with online and how they understand the internet. Find ways you can connect over online activities, such as playing a game together. Communicate regularly about online safety. If you make an executive decision (i.e., removal of a device or app), explain your reasons. Where appropriate (and especially with young people), consider inviting your child into the problem solving – explain your concern and then ask, “what can we do about this?” Be a good digital role model. Children learn far more from what they see us do than what they hear us say! Consider your own online behaviour. Does this behaviour reflect the values you want to impart on your children? The 8th of February 2022 marks Safer Internet Day. Find more information and resources at esafety.gov.au and saferinternet.org.

School Is In For Audrey Thousands of children across the country will walk through the school gates for the first time this month, beginning their education journey. 5-year-old Audrey Sargent is one of those children and she will be starting Kindergarten at Bethany Catholic Primary School in Glenmore Park. Audrey will be joining her older sister, 6-year-old Evelyn at the school this year. Younger brother Thomas (4) will start next year. “Audrey is ready to start Kindergarten this year. She is looking forward to learning more about Maths and making some new friends” explained Karissa Sargent, Audrey’s Mum. Away from school, she is a very active girl who loves her sports. “She loves swimming, soccer, ballet, karate and being adventurous” Karissa said. Despite not having started Kindergarten yet, Audrey has already set her sights on a career in the medical field. “I want to be a Nurse to help all the sick people” she replied. For many parents and carers, that first day of school is filled with mixed emotions as they wave goodbye to their children. “It will be both exciting and upsetting. It’s a big step to let go of one of your kids you have nurtured and grown with, though it’s exciting to see her start a new adventure and make lifelong friends” agreed Karissa. Best of luck to all those students who are beginning and returning to school in the local community this year. r Feature Article: [Cover+Above] Audrey can’t wait for the big day. Adventure Awaits The pandemic has meant that we have been unable to travel. Trips that we once took overseas, or interstate have been replaced with adventures closer to home. Local Mum Melissa Bedwell saw this as the perfect opportunity to create Clue Tours NSW. Clue Tours use nature, infrastructure, history, and community to create cryptic clues for you to access and solve with your mobile phone. It is a fun self-guided trail where you solve the clues on a scavenger hunt through the outdoors. You receive the clues on your mobile and answer them as you follow and walk on your trail - discovering more of the people, land, and history with every clue. They can be done by yourself or in a group; it’s a fun activity for families, partners, groups of friends and team building experiences. “I have always been passionate about adventure, exploring, history and having fun! With overseas travel closed for the past two years, I re-discovered adventure and history at home in our local area and beyond. Creating a cryptic clue tour was a way to incorporate fun, a sense of adventure, and looking at our local area from a completely different viewpoint” explained Melissa. “There is so much beauty in our landscape, amazing history and community vibe that surrounds us in Western Sydney, and I wanted to share that with a fun twist that suits both locals and tourists” she continued. Clue Tours NSW was officially launched in November 2021. The Glenmore Park tour was the first, with a Penrith tour to be launched soon. In 2022, they plan to expand tours in the Blue Mountains and Emu Plains, Hawkesbury as well as additional Penrith and Glenmore Park tours. “We’re also developing a unique clue tour that can be completed online or by car for those who can’t get out walking, but still want to experience the sense of adventure, fun and challenge that Clue Tours NSW provides. Beyond 2022, we plan to expand the Clue Tours to regional towns across NSW” Melissa stated. Clue Tours NSW are offering Glenmore Gazette readers a 20% discount off their Glenmore Park Discover Clue Tour. Simply head over to their website and enter the code ggazette20 at the checkout page (Valid for the Glenmore Park Discover Clue Tour, and tour must be purchased by 31 March 2022). Of the forty-nine students from St Paul’s who sat for the IB Diploma, 16% achieved results above ATAR 99, 37% above ATAR 95 and 53% above ATAR 90. Strong results were recorded in English A Literature; Languages including Chinese, French and Latin; Psychology; Chemistry; Physics and Visual and Performing Arts. St Paul’s Principal, Ian Wake, congratulated students, families, and the staff of St Paul’s, noting the extraordinary circumstances in which these results have been achieved. “Securing these marks in the IB, despite the many challenges students faced over the course of their final years of study, is testament to their ironclad determination, flourishing talents and great resilience. It is a phenomenal achievement,” he said. Mr Wake also highlighted the important role that the whole school community plays in supporting student achievement. “No student excels in a vacuum but shares their success with a network of family members, teachers, friends and supporters who have helped them realise their potential,” he said. Celebrating their perfect IB scores, St Paul’s Duces for 2021 Josh Lim, Mondira Paul, and Marvin Madfouni reflected on their last two years studying for the IB Diploma. Josh found periods of remote learning and lockdown challenging but says it also presented several unique study opportunities. “In my case, remote learning was very two-sided when it came to study for the IB. Rather than dwelling on the negatives, I found it helpful to make the most of the positive opportunities I now had. Limited travel opened more time and flexibility with when and how I studied. While I had to be organised and take more responsibility for my learning, I could take on information at my own pace,” he said. Mondira thanked her teachers for their support throughout these difficult two years. “The support I received from my teachers while studying remotely really drove my learning and encouraged my curiosity. Inquiry is a skill that’s at the heart of the IB so having teachers who were always happy to discuss and answer my questions was really valuable,” she said. Similarly, in overcoming the challenges of the last two years, Marvin acknowledges the support from those around him. “After receiving my IB score, I felt overjoyed as I could finally see that my hard work and sacrifice had paid off. After a disrupted two years it was a bit of a surprise and a great way to end my schooling. I couldn’t have achieved such good results without the support of my family, teachers and the school, and for that I am very thankful,” he said. St Paul’s is one of Western Sydney’s leading academically non-selective co-educational schools with an open enrolment policy to the IB Diploma.

Can my Genes be so Bad that Migraine is Unavoidable? A small number of people suffer from a rare/severe subtype of migraine with aura (MA) called hemiplegic migraine (HM), where weakness or temporary numbness, affects one side of the body, accompanying migraine. HM is diagnosed/subdivided into: 1. Sporadic hemiplegic migraine (SHM) – no family history of HM exists 2. Familial hemiplegic migraine (FHM) – 1st or 2nd-degree relative has HM ~0.01% of Europeans suffer HM. SHM (1/3 of HM cases) results from: 1. Pathogenic-variant newly arisen FHM-genes (listed below) 2. Cellular mosaicism (people with mixtures of cells with completely different genetics) 3. Other gene-transmission-mechanisms 4. Environmental factors One of 3 specific FHM gene-mutations is passed-down from parents: 1. CACNA1A (FHM type 1) leads a person’s brain cells to misshandle calcium. 2. ATP1A2 (FHM type 2) leads to altered handling of both sodium, potassium, calcium and possibly acid by brain cells. 3. SCN1A (FHM type 3) leads to altered sodium-handling by brain cells which alters levels neurotransmitter GABA levels. All mutations, increase risk of brain-cell-hyperexcitability, cortical spreading depression (CSD) and migraine. No other

major HM-causing genes have been found and >75% of genetically tested HM sufferers, have no detectable gene mutation. HM genetic sub-types are indistinguishable although symptom-picture varies widely, even among people with the same genetic mutation. FHM has: 1. an autosomal dominant inheritance pattern (just one copy of mutated gene can cause disease). 2. a high penetrance – i.e., 70-90% of people with the mutated gene will get migraines. Nevertheless, penetrance isn’t 100% and twin studies clearly show even identical-twins can have completely different symptom-profiles. Recently, a study concluded that the ‘wide array of symptoms, severity, age of onset and frequency’ suggests that HM-patients getting severe headaches, do so from an unlikely combination of both genetic and endogenous or environmental factors. Swedish researchers similarly concluded that HM may not be caused by single-gene-mutations; but is likely an extremeversion of migraine with aura, sitting at the severe-end of the HM disease-severity- spectrum. They argued that a combination of environmental factors working together with rare and/ or multiple-common-gene-variants, conspire to produce HM migraines which suggests that even very rare and severe migraine types, have controllable environmental factors, that may significantly lower migraine risk.

Welcome To Our New Staff Members We are getting busier and busier, and we are still growing in size. Please join me in welcoming 4 new staff members to our team! You will still be seeing all the previous staff members when you visit. We now have a total of 25 staff! Wow! Cesar Cesar grew up in Miami, Florida, USA. He completed his Bachelor's Degree in Animal, Poultry and Veterinary Sciences with a concentration in Animal Nutrition, at Tuskegee University in Alabama, USA in 2009. Cesar is currently pursuing his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree at the University of Sydney. He has worked as a veterinary technician for over 20 years in the USA, working in a variety of different practices. Cesar has extensive experience with a wide variety of animals, ranging from dogs, cats, horses, pocket pets, large animals, reptiles, birds, and fish. When not busy working or attending classes, Cesar enjoys scuba diving, aquaculture, reading, cooking, and spending time with friends and family. Cesar completed 2 weeks of University placement at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and we were so impressed, we offered him a job. Cesar began casual employment in February 2021. Ethan Ethan is a Penrith local who joined our team in December 2021. He is currently studying a Bachelor of Veterinary Biology and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Sydney. At home, Ethan has 5 cats and 1 dog. In his free time, he enjoys bouldering, reading, and walking his dog, Harley. Sarah Sarah graduated with her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in January 2021. She joined the team at Orchard Hills in November 2021. Sarah has grown up with animals and feels like there’s a hole in her heart when she’s not around them. She currently has four cats - Calvin, Marshmallow, Sundae and Tucci, and a Staffie named Phoebe in tow. “I love being able to work with animals and help them in any capacity I can. I am continually learning and love being able to expand my knowledge of animals and veterinary nursing”. Melitta Melitta joined our team in October 2021 in the grooming department. Melitta has previously worked on a breeding thoroughbred stud managing vet visits and owns her own country clothing business (Country N Co). Melitta has 2 horses, Sensation (3yr old stock horse), Krakajac (25yr old thoroughbred) and 2 dogs, Dixie (14wk old Kelpie) and Penny (3yr old Labrador). Melitta has a loving passion for all animals every shape and size. In her spare time, she is out competing her horses in team sorting, camp drafting, local shows, and beach riding! Melitta loves coming to work as part of such an amazing team! Xinlin Xinlin grew up in Harbin, Heilongjiang China and he is
currently studying the Doctor of Veterinary Medicine Degree at the University of Sydney. Xinlin has no pets currently, as he left his geckos in China with his friends to look after. Xinlin completed 2 weeks of University placement at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and we were so impressed, we offered him a job. Xinlin began casual employment in January 2022. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.

Going Once, Going Twice, Sold! The new year is a great opportunity to clean up the clutter around your home. Instead of throwing it all away, there’s a local group where you can sell it and give it a new lease on life. $2 Auctions Glenmore Park and Surrounds Group was relaunched with a new version in February 2021. The group has around 2,000 members. Membership is by approval, and you must reside within a 25km of Glenmore Park and agree to the rules of the group. They encourage all different types of items to be listed, as long as they are not illegal or prohibited items that are not allowed to be sold on Facebook. Items include clothing, books, jewellery, and homewares, just to name a few. Some items are to be listed and sold in minimum bundles of three. Broken items are also not permitted to be sold. The recent lockdown proved a godsend, with members selling items and keeping a constant flow of money coming into the home. It was a source to buy those hard-to-find household essentials during this time at a discounted price. Members of the group have become friends, often checking in on one another and staying connected. Some kindhearted followers have also purchased items in the group to donate to disadvantaged adults and children. “Someone’s trash, my new treasure. Recycling at its best! And the members are all lovely. I enjoy just watching some of the auctions”. “This page has helped buy gifts for Christmas and birthdays and in doing so saving money especially during lockdowns”. “It’s a good page, as I know some people are really struggling. I have sold stuff and given it to the winner for free. Great for grabbing a bargain and preventing stuff going to landfill”. “Great page! Great admin! Great bargains!” These are just some of the comments made by members of the group. You can find $2 Auctions Glenmore Park and Surrounds Group on Facebook. They ask that you answer 2 questions, when requesting to become a member. If you are within the 25km radius and agree to the rules, then you are approved to start listing or buying. r Time to declutter those cupboards and make some cash! | Image: www.pixabay.com

Here we are in February with the first edition for 2022. Despite the new COVID variant Omicron arriving, we refuse to give in and continue the fight to stay safe for one another. Our health care workers are working hard to look after us and we cannot praise them enough. As we wave goodbye to our holidays, it’s time to prepare for a new year ahead of school, work, and life in general. This month, we follow the excitement of that first day of kindergarten, prepare for Summer sports and shine the spotlight on those members of the local community that make it just that ‘a community’. We wish our advertisers, contributors, and ‘you’ our much-valued readers a safe, happy and healthy year ahead. By continuing to support our Advertisers, you support us. For this, we thank you. To all the lovers and those in love. ‘Happy Valentines Day’ (Feb 14). Enjoy ‘Your Community News’. Remember, being happy never goes out of style!
