Two Strong Hearts

50 years ago in May, Carol and David Stanley said “I do”, at the Dundas Anglican Church. Carol and David first met at Ashbury Methodist Church two years earlier.

Family is very important to the couple, and they are fortunate to have all of their close family living in or near Glenmore Park. Today they have 3 children and 5 grandchildren and love to spend time together, whether it’s looking after the grandchildren on the weekend, or dinner out with the kids.

Faith is also important to them, and they enjoy being part of the church family at Grace West Anglican Church, where they have made friends for life.

“It’s a support network that is always there, no matter what time it is, or what you need – someone will be there for you,” said David.

Carol and David have lived in Glenmore Park for 30 years, after growing up in Ermington and Ashbury, and say they wouldn’t live anywhere else!

David and Carol obviously get on well, and humour plays a large role in their successful 50 years of marriage.

Their take on a long and happy marriage? They are both in agreement here.

“You have to be able to forgive – and mean it.”

Valentine’s Day is here this month. It’s a day where couples celebrate their romantic love, friendship, and admiration.

Help Shape Council’s Library Services

After conducting research and extensive consultation with the community, including face-to-face workshops and an online survey in early 2022, Penrith City Library has developed its draft Library Services Strategy for 2023-2028. The Library is inviting the community to provide further feedback before it’s finalised.

The five-year strategy will guide how Penrith City Council will manage and deliver future library services to the community, with a focus on the four domains of public library services, which include facilities, resources, programs and services, and people and culture.

Service NSW Coming Soon to Glenmore Park

No longer will residents of Glenmore Park have to venture outside of their local community to seek essential government services that are provided by a Service NSW Centre. Thanks to the Liberal and Nationals Government, a new Service NSW Centre will be coming to Glenmore Park soon with the site expected to be completed and opened to customers this year.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said that the Service NSW Centre is a vital addition to the Glenmore Park community and it will allow families to receive in-person essential services.

“The NSW Liberals and Nationals in Government are delivering for Western Sydney and especially the Glenmore Park community. Instead of having to travel outside of the community to apply for a new license or access rebates, families will be able to stay local and get access to services more conveniently,” Mrs Davies said.

“The latest estimation is that the Service NSW Centre will be open this year with 10 Driver Testing parking spots and 12 counters to serve customers.”

At a Service NSW Centre, individuals can renew or transfer their rego, get a working with children check, get a license for driving different vehicles, find rebates, savings and so much more.

Right now, Service NSW are helping to reduce the cost of living by delivering over 70 ways to save through rebates and vouchers that are relevant to you and your family. Some popular savings include:

• Premier’s Back to School NSW Vouchers which provide a $150 voucher to help families pay for school supplies,

• Toll relief with free or half-price vehicle registration for frequent toll users and

• Active Kids vouchers that provide 2 x $100 vouchers for children’s sport, fitness and recreation.

New Real Estate Office Opens in Glenmore Park

Urban Land Housing have recently opened a new real estate office in Glenmore Park.

Located at HomeCo Glenmore Park, the office opened in January, with the Grand Opening held on Thursday 2nd February.

“Urban Glenmore Park offers a service from Paddock to PM, meaning we can support large scale development, right through to residential sales and property management” explained Aaron Pendleton of Urban Land Housing Glenmore Park.

The real estate office services all areas of the West, mostly focused on Glenmore Park and the Penrith City Council area.

There is currently 7 team members stationed at the new office fulltime. With the company widely connected, this also includes pop ins from other staff.

What is Urban Land Housing’s point of difference?

“At Urban, we promise to provide the very best service to our clients and stand behind our promise. With that in mind, we offer our clients the opportunity to choose their own selling fee based on our performance, service, and end result that we achieve for our customers.

“We understand that selling a property can be a stressful experience with important decisions to be made. We do everything we can to alleviate as much of this stress from our clients as possible and one of the ways we do this is by offering them the opportunity to pay a fee that they are comfortable with, only when they are satisfied with the outcome of the campaign” Aaron stated.

“Our clients find comfort in the knowledge that we have their very best interests at heart and that we go above and beyond to make sure their experience, and final sale price, is that absolute best” he continued.

Aaron is looking forward to working with the local community.

“As a local, I have always felt connected to Glenmore Park. Having played footy for the Brumbies, I knew when Urban presented the opportunity to open up here and better service the local community, it was a no brainer” ended Aaron.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

SETTLERS MULGOA

1300 Mulgoa Rd, Mulgoa NSW 2745

My sister Kathryn and I recently visited Settlers Mulgoa for lunch.

When I arrived, the staff greeted Kathryn and I and showed us to our table. On the table waiting for us were two glasses of ice water. Once ordering at Settlers, you order at the counter and then the friendly staff bring your food and beverages to you. The service was superb.

Our drinks and food arrived promptly, not long after placing our order.

I ordered the Reuben Sandwich which was excellent. The sandwich contained slow cooked corned beef, melted cheese, fresh watercress, sauerkraut, pickles, and a spicy Russian dressing. This was served on toasted rye sourdough and a side of chips.

The Reuben Sandwich was one of the best I have experienced in an exceptionally long time. The corned beef was thick, had plenty of flavour and along with the pickles gave this sandwich an extra tang. The dressing gave this sandwich extra flavour, and the rye bread completed this mouth-watering delight. If you are a lover of Reuben sandwiches, go and experience this sandwich for yourself.

Kathryn ordered the Battered Fish Tacos which consisted of beer battered flathead fillet, slaw, Pico di galo, cheese, and sour cream. Kathryn was impressed with her tacos. The fish tacos were full of flavour, and she said after finishing these tacos, you really felt like they filled you up.

I ordered an orange juice and Kathryn ordered an iced coffee.

In conclusion, if you are looking for somewhere relaxing to dine out and enjoy some exceptional customer service, Settlers is for you. The Staff were attentive, and I highly recommend Settlers Mulgoa. The selection of music playing in the background was spot on and not too loud. The staff did come and check that we were happy with our food and beverages and asked us for feedback on the new menu, which launched 2 days ago.

I give Settlers a ten out of ten. I thank Sophie and her team for making our experience the best it could be.

Teenage musician Alana Willetts is fast making a name for herself on the local music scene. The former Caroline Chisholm College student is looking forward to the year ahead and spreading her musical talents even further.

The singer/guitarist began singing at just 9 years of age! Honing her skills as a singer and entertainer at Wild Heart Creatives, an interactive show at Disneyland would prove to be an inspiring moment for a budding career behind the microphone.

“I was picked from the crowd and sang a chorus of Dolly Parton’s ‘Jolene’. After getting a big cheer from the crowd, I knew I wanted to pursue music as a career” she smiled.

Alana has already been performing at Carols on the Course in Leonay and Carols at the Paceway since she started singing. She has also entered the Penrith Show talent quest, Luddenham Show talent quest as well as local festivals and community events.

2023 looks set to be a huge year.

“This year is looking pretty exciting! I have been selected as a featured artist for Pulse Alive, which is an arena spectacular showcasing talent from students in the NSW public school system.

“As part of this initiative, I have also been chosen to participate in the Pulse Rural tour, which involves travelling to country towns to perform and participate in workshops” Alana explained.

Her versatility as a singer goes beyond being a soloist and she performs in a duo with the talented Reisha Sutton and the band ‘The Drunk Uncles’.

“I’m graduating from high school this year, so I am aiming to get myself out there more and hopefully release a single” she stated.

You can catch Alana this month, playing on February 17th at Theo’s Rooftop Bar in Penrith from 9pm to 12am.

Generation Vape: How to Talk to your Teen about the Risks of E-Cigarettes

Parents are talking to young people about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, but too often these conversations fail to cover the risks of vaping. A Royal Children’s Hospital ‘Child Health Poll’ found that 57% of parents have never discussed e-cigarettes with their teen. Yet around 14% of young people aged 14 – 17 years have tried vaping.

E-cigarettes, also known as ‘vapes’, are electronic devices that heat liquids to create aerosol that users inhale. Aerosol is a fine spray of chemicals and small particles that can lodge in the lungs. As these products are new to the market, there is no quality and safety standards on devices, liquids, and labelling.

Vapes contain chemicals and toxins commonly found in bug spray, weed killer and nail polish remover. Short term risks associated with vapes include vomiting, shortness of breath, poisoning, nausea, headaches, lung damage and heart palpitations. Vaping can negatively impact growing bodies and brains and is likely to cause lung and mouth cancers.

The majority of vapes contain nicotine, even if they are labelled otherwise. Nicotine is highly toxic, and the most addictive substance known. Young people who vape are 3 to 5 times more likely to take up smoking later in life.

Here are some tips for chatting with teens about the risks of vaping:

• Know the facts – keep up to date with the latest information by consulting your local GP and organisations such as the Alcohol and Drug Foundation (adf.org.au).

• Keep the conversation open, calm, and non-judgmental –Use a respectful tone of voice and body language.

• Avoid lecturing, judging, or going through your teen’s space looking for evidence – prioritise trust with your teen. We are all more likely to consider information shared with us by somebody we trust.

• Avoid exaggerating the dangers – share the facts simply and calmly.

• Explain your concerns – let your teen know you care about their health and wellbeing.

• Be a positive role model – a young person is about 55% more likely to try e-cigarettes if they have a parent who smokes. Avoid using any nicotine products in front of your children.

The journey is about to begin for thousands across the country. One that will bring laughs, tears, friendships, and lifelong memories. Kindergarten will soon start for the first time for many, including local student Olivia Cooper.

This year, Olivia, who is 5 years old, will start school at Surveyors Creek Public School in Glenmore Park. Olivia will join her older brothers, Bailey in Year 5, and Charlie in Year 4, who also attend the school.

Olivia can’t wait for the big day to arrive and is excited for the year ahead at school.

“She is keen to start Kindergarten at Surveyors Creek Public School this year. Olivia said she’s looking forward to the canteen and, of course, making new friends” smiled Clare McComb, Olivia’s Mum.

The energetic youngster has lots of hobbies and interests that keep her busy away from school. Her favourite sport is soccer, and she enjoys playing it. She also enjoys her time with animals including dogs and horses.

So, what does she want to be when she finishes school you may ask?

“Olivia has already made up her mind what she would like to be when she finishes school. She said that she would like to either be a Real Estate Agent or a News Reporter” Clare said to the Glenmore Gazette.

Starting school can be a day of mixed emotions for parents, grandparents, family, and friends as they farewell children for their road ahead in kindy.

“With Olivia’s older brothers Bailey and Charlie already at school, this will definitely be a different experience for us. Being our last child, it will certainly be the end of an era. Having said that, we can’t wait to see how she develops and grows whilst at school” she ended.

Best of luck to all the local students starting and returning to school this year.

School Books Down for Mrs Mac

Mrs Gail Macleod Jones has announced that she will be taking leave in 2023, pending retirement from Regentville Public School.

“Mrs Mac”, as she is affectionately known, is the longest serving staff member at Regentville Public School. She has been teaching at the school since it was a tiny 3 classes - before the suburb of Glenmore Park existed.

Mrs Macleod Jones came to Regentville at a time of incredible change within the school and the community - just as it was transforming “from small country school to big city place”. One of the most recognisable parts of Regentville Public School, the hall, was constructed two years after she arrived.

Gail has served the school and community continuously for 31 years, giving tirelessly and generously of her time. She was the keeper of the Gold and Silver assemblies, originator of the dance festivals, organiser of the playground games and activities, expert coordinator of their Year 5 camp and great friend and colleague to many current and former staff and students.

As you could imagine, over a span of 31 years, that would be a long list of names. This is a big loss to the school, and they are certainly going to miss her!

Council Delivers Final Stage of Playspace Shade Program

Penrith City Council has completed the final stage of its three-year program to install shade sails and plant trees at 98 playspaces across the city.

Stage Three comprised of 34 playspaces across Caddens, Cambridge Park, Colyton, Erskine Park, Glenmore Park, Jordan Springs, Kingswood, Londonderry, North St Marys, Penrith, South Penrith, St Clair, and Werrington.

Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said the shade improvements will protect residents and their families from the sun’s UV rays and heat through the summer months.

“Shade will continue to be a vital part of the designs for all future playspace upgrades and new playspace projects to ensure we are keeping our city cool,” Cr Hitchen said.

The $2.7 million project was delivered as part of the Council’s commitment to the Shade Facilities and Playspaces Policy that was adopted in late 2019.

Australian Government funding of $510,000 was provided through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure (LRCI) Program. This program supports local councils to deliver priority local road and community infrastructure projects across Australia.

Federal Member for Lindsay Melissa McIntosh MP said she knows how important sun safety is for families.

“I’m pleased that the shade sails will help our local kids play safely outdoors.”

The shade sails are designed to meet Australian Standards, block out 97 - 99% of UV rays, minimise heat and allow appropriate airflow, while tree planting provides a long-term shade solution, increases biodiversity and habitat, and reduces noise pollution.

Find your nearest playspace, search penrith.city/playgrounds.

Glenmore Park FC Eyes 30 Years

Glenmore Park Football Club is preparing for one of their biggest years ahead, with the local club celebrating it’s 30 Year Anniversary this season.

Registrations for the upcoming 2023 season opened on 4th January and will be closing on 10th February, this month.

This year, the Kookaburras will cater for age groups from the Under 5’s to the Under 17’s with a combination of mixed, boy’s and girl’s teams. They will also have men’s and ladies’ teams, along with their premier team – the Waratahs.

Last season saw the launch of the club’s new uniforms and emblem. The first junior and senior presentations took place, since 2019 following COVID. Over 1,500 people attended the junior presentation, which was an amazing day for the club and community.

There were 8 teams that made the Grand Final weekend, with the ladies’ premier team (Ruby League) and boys Under 13/2’s team both winning their grand finals.

In 2022, Glenmore Park Football Club had 1,156 players registered across 105 teams. This consisted of 900 male players and 256 female players, with the girls only competitions from Under 8’s.

“We are very much looking forward to the season ahead” explained Rob Mooney, Secretary of Glenmore Park Football Club.

“We will be celebrating the club’s 30 Year Anniversary this season, which will be a significant milestone in our history. Players, Coaches and Managers returning to the club ready for the new 2023 season is great. The club are also always looking for new committee members to join the amazing group of volunteers who run Glenmore Park FC, and for anyone across the local community to become a club sponsor” he continued to the Glenmore Gazette.

For more information, visit their website at www.glenmoreparkfootball.com.au or their Facebook page by searching ‘Glenmore Park Football Club’.

The Glenmore Park Brumbies will be kicking off their 30th year in the Penrith District Junior Rugby League Competition in 2023.

From their humble beginnings in 1994 where they had just 9 teams, they have grown to now fielding over 40 teams in all age groups.

The 2023 season will kick off with trial games throughout March and round one commencing on 15th April, the following month. The Brumbies cater for Under 5’s through to the Open Men’s and Women’s teams.

“We have a new committee, headed by Sean Warden as the President of the Glenmore Park Brumbies. Sean has been with the club since the 3rd season and has seen many changes throughout the years, as well as many success stories” explained Liz Dunn, Publicity Officer of Glenmore Park Brumbies to the Glenmore Gazette.

“He is extremely excited this season, as the players take to the field in a one off special retro jersey. We will have further celebrations throughout the year to be announced but our main focus in 2023 is building female rugby league” she added.

Last season brought with it many highlights throughout the rounds.

“2022 was a successful season, especially for our Under 14/1’s who went through undefeated as well as our Under 18/2’s team who won the premiership. With the rain plaguing the season and our sheds being torn down, we are looking forward to our brand new facilities” said Liz.

The Glenmore Park Brumbies have a direct pathway to Panthers Women’s Rugby League (PWRL) and they are looking forward to success on the field as well as developing their future NRL stars.

Pres-season training is commencing in the coming weeks, with all times available on their Facebook page.

Registrations for the upcoming season are now open and can be made through www.playrugbyleague.com.

“Our Under 5’s to Under 7’s receive free registration with the use of the Active Kids vouchers. This includes a jersey, training shirt, shorts, and socks” she ended.

HEALTH MATTERS

Could Oral Coenzyme-Q10 Supplementation Help Patients with Ulcerative Colitis?

Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a vitamin-like substance, naturally made by animal cells. It increases cellular energy production. Roediger in 1980 suggested ulcerative colitis (UC) may be a cellular energy deficiency disease.

In 2015, scientists first tested CoQ10 in animal models of UC. They infused vinegar into rat colons to create colitis, and found that animals who had received 8 days of supplemental CoQ10 prior to infusion had:

1. Reduced levels of colon inflammation

2. Higher levels of colon cell:

a. antioxidant protective compounds

b. energy production

3. Better preserved colonic wall architecture

In 2016, scientists infused iodoacetate into rat colons to create colitis. Rats subsequently treated with CoQ10 showed:

1. Near normal colonic wall architecture

2. Reduced levels of inflammation

3. Potent colon cell antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities through significant increases in cell antioxidants catalase and glutathione

In 2017, researchers again infused vinegar into rat colons to create colitis, then gave rats either 10 or 30 or 100 mg/kg oral CoQ10 daily (prior or post infusion). They showed that Co Q10 dose dependently protects against vinegar-induced UC. CoQ10 significantly:

1. Reduced

a. UC related colon swelling

b. improved clinical and macroscopic tissue disease scores

c. inflammatory markers

2. Increased

a. blood antioxidant capacity

b. colonic-tissue antioxidant capacity

3. Preserved microscopic tissue architecture

This study is interesting because it showed that:

1. Oral CoQ10 given either 8 days prior, or 8 days following vinegar infusion protected rats from UC

2. CoQ10 protective effects continued to increase with increasing CoQ10 dose

3. Animals given CoQ10 after vinegar infusion at the maximal dose of 100mg/kg, had almost complete protection from UC, showing virtually no ill-effects from vinegar infusion

In 2021, UC researchers first gave human UC patients 100mg

CoQ10 twice-daily or placebo. They found that CQ10 intake:

1. Reduced UC disease severity

2. Markedly improved patient quality of life

3. Lowered both systolic and diastolic blood pressure

Human experiments clearly show that supplemental CoQ10:

1. Does not accumulate in blood or tissues, and

2. Does not reduce body production of CoQ9/10

And for these reasons, CoQ10 is considered a highly safe dietary supplement, with minimal side effects and low drug interaction potential’. CQ10 supplementation may be something to discuss with your GP if you have UC.

Something to Bark About

All About School Shoes

It’s back to school! Time to check that school shoes and sports shoes haven’t been outgrown or worn out. Here are our top tips for finding the correct fit*.

1) Support

Shoes must support your child’s feet. Press on the back of the shoe (heel counter) and it should be firm. Shoes should bend up at the ball of the foot (forefoot) not the middle of the shoe (midfoot). When twisting the shoe, it should move a little to adapt to the ground, but not collapse.

2) Size

New shoes should be half to three quarters of an adult thumb width longer than the longest toe. Note: the longest toe may not be the big toe! Replace shoes when toes are close to the end when fastened. Don’t wait until they are hitting the end.

The shoe is too wide if the sides that come together in the fastening section of the shoe touch when fastened. If the shoe is too narrow, the shoe won’t fasten properly. Toes should be able to wiggle without being cramped or swimming in too much space.

Check the size by removing the insole and have your child stand on it. If they are spilling over the insole or there is too much space, the fit is incorrect.

3) Fasteners

Velcro fasteners are adequate for younger children but laces will provide more support as your child grows and increases activity. If possible, teach children to tie shoelaces as early as possible (around Year 1 or 2 is ideal).

4) Materials & Manufacturing

Generally, shoes made with better quality materials will be more robust and provide better support. It is worth paying a little extra for reinforcement with stitching at the toe cap as it is likely to last longer.

5) Wear In Shoes

Wear in new shoes for shorter periods at home before wearing them all day at school to avoid issues. If your child experiences any kind of pain, please book an assessment with us. Difficult feet to fit may also need fasteners to be adjusted or extra support provided. Happy shoe shopping!

The Glenmore Park community have embraced their very own group for our four legged friends, Glenmore Park Bark and Play.

Created by Dee Kerr on 19th August in 2015, many members have come to the group to organise meet-ups for their dogs, report lost dogs and to share information with one another. The popular group boasts over 800 members.

Dee was instrumental in petitioning and campaigning Penrith City Council for Glenmore Park Dog Park, lobbying for years to make the dream a reality.

“Dog owners needed somewhere for them to socialise their fur babies, preventing them from being locked in small backyards all the time.

“The group was a way to bring dogs and their owners together, and to reach out for their opinions about a local dog park. Now that we have our own dog park, the hard work has paid off” Dee explained.

Fast forward almost 8 years, and Dee is thankful for the feedback she regularly receives that members are enjoying it.

Local group member David loves being a part of the group and has even introduced his French Bulldog, Pierre, to some new friends.

“Pierre gets excited about heading to the dog park. With the help of the group, we’ve caught up with fellow French Bulldogs and their owners” he said.

If you would like to learn more and join the group, search Glenmore Park Bark and Play on Facebook.

Summer Cinema Coming Soon

Kicking off their Summer Cinema series, you can enjoy the family classic, Night at the Museum (2006) at Triangle Park, Penrith. Be sure to get in quick - there is free popcorn and ice cream for the first 250 people.

Get there early to grab some dinner from one of the local restaurants or pack a picnic, before getting settled and cosy for a relaxing night at the movies.

This event is free and proudly brought to you by Penrith City Council.

Join us for a fun, summer’s night at the movies!

Go to www.penrith.city/events for more information and additional dates.

Rosie knew from a very young age that she wanted to work with animals. She grew up on a farm south-west of Sydney and had almost every type of animal you can imagine as a pet (her favourite are pet rats!). Rosie got her first vet nursing job back in 2002, started her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing and became a fully qualified veterinary nurse in 2004. There are many things Rosie loves about vet nursing but her absolute favourite thing is giving the patients that extra bit of TLC while they're in our care, as it builds trust and it goes a long way to reduce any anxiety or fears they may have while they're here at the hospital.

Rosie taught Puppy Preschool at another vet before and loved it! She is currently undergoing training so that she can start teaching Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills as well.

Rosie started work at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in July 2022.

Madeleine – Veterinary Nurse

Madeleine completed Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2021 and has been working in general practice over the Penrith/Blue Mountains regions for 4 years.

Madeleine joined the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in January 2023.

Mahum – Animal Attendant

Mahum joined the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in September 2022.

Growing up, my biggest aspiration in life was to become a vet since I loved being around animals and of course was hooked on shows such as Bondi Vet. 10 years later, I am so grateful to be making steps in achieving my dream – starting with studying Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine/ Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at University of Sydney and now gaining invaluable experience as an animal attendant at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. She has also begun training to teach Puppy Preschool, which has been so interesting and rewarding.

Tayla – Groomer

Tayla joined the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital as a groomer in November 2022.

Tayla has just finished travelling around Australia for the last 8 months, her favourite place to visit was Elliot Falls which is the northernmost point of Australia.

After a short period of work placement, she joined our team in June 2022 as an Animal Attendant. It has always been her dream to have a career working with animals and she is now on her way to becoming a Vet Nurse.

Madeline confesses to loving all animals, big and small but has admitted her favourites are elephants, owls, dolphins and guinea pigs.

Lily – Kennel Hand

Lily lives locally and is a high school student. She loves animals and especially her dog Maggie, who she’s had since 2015.

Lily joined the team in May 2022 and has enjoyed the opportunity to be involved with animals and be surrounded by a welcoming environment.”

April – Kennel Hand

April has always lived in Orchard Hills and has been going to Orchard Hills Vet with her 2 dogs since she was a kid and has now started working here.

April is currently in high school and has always had a passion for animals, so she is looking forward to a career involving them.

April started working in July 2022 and is grateful to be part of the team. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital.

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

“Has anyone ever done something wrong to you? Of course they have! We are wronged by others and we do wrong to them. Some things are trivial and are of little consequence. Some things are much more significant. While a person’s actions may always have consequences on a relationship and impact it in a variety of ways, for any relationship to move forward we need to be willing to extend forgiveness.

Does a person deserve our forgiveness? Of course not! A person never deserves to be forgiven. That is the whole point of forgiveness. We are choosing not to hold something against another person and let go of the desire for personal justice. Jesus taught a radical forgiveness of others based on the forgiveness that God extends to each one of us. The logical goes like this: if you have experienced great forgiveness, then you will be a person who is willing to forgive others!

There is more to the story as well. If you understand that you are a person who needs forgiving, then it means you know you have done wrong to others. Recognising the wrong we do and seeking God’s forgiveness is the first step in changing the way we live so we really love others.”

When the Light Goes Out

There are days when we think Louis Armstrong is so right, ‘What a wonderful world!’ with its birds and bees and flowers and trees. There is light everywhere. Then along comes the other days. On holidays your daughter’s $850 bike is stolen. Family meltdowns. Dementia takes your dad away. A husband cheats—the marriage falls apart. Carnage. Someone loses their job. A son fights depression. Abused children. Violence. Fear. Shame. Homelessness. COVID-19. War in Ukraine. Refugees. The balance tips and we can’t hear the birds and bees anymore. Perhaps we feel hopeless. Anxious. Alone. We have good moments but at bedrock the light has gone out.

When life throws curveballs at us, the Bible calls us to faith or confidence in God - to accept what is true about God spiritually but that we cannot see physically. For example, God’s interest in our welfare, his spiritual power, his promise to always be with us, and his plan for a truly wonderful. Faith allows us to see God and his plan for our good.

I have noticed how a promise of ice-cream impacts the whole demeanor of my young kids when they are bored. What is promised is a goodness beyond their capacity and they have no reason to doubt it, because they trust me. And when they accept what is promised as a done deal, their burdened little souls seem bright and hopeful again by the power of expecting something good. This helps us understand how faith works and faith opens the way for God to bring light to our lives.

Sometimes faith releases God’s power to address our problems. For example, I have seen people healed by God’s power. But sometimes we must go through hardship with the help of faith making us strong in God’s promises. This allows us to live in goodness and light even when things are bad; to wait expectantly and courageously for God to reach into our heart and circumstance. To live with hope.

Like they say, 2023 offers a blank book full of new and exciting opportunities. The pen is in your hand and the chapters are waiting to be scribed!

One of the best lessons I put into practice last year was to not hold onto things that are weighing you down. Focus on what brings you positive energy and happiness and be sure to surround yourself with the same. Mark my words, you’ll feel empowered by doing so.

We start the year grateful to our advertisers, who make it possible for us to compile and distribute our publications to 28,000 letterboxes each month across 20 suburbs. We urge you to call on their businesses if required, be sure to let them know you saw them in the ‘Gazette’.

Enjoy this first edition of ‘Your Community News’ for 2023.
