New $17 Million Fernhill School Officially Opened
(L-R) Education Minister Rob Stokes, Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies, Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Fernhill School student | Image Supplied
Students with physical and intellectual disabilities will benefit from a hydrotherapy pool, sensory garden and purpose-built learning areas at the new Fernhill School, officially opened last month. Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Education Minister Rob Stokes were joined by Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies to officially open the $17 million school. “The hydrotherapy pool, sensory garden and other facilities like the accessible hall, covered outdoor learning areas, games court and play areas are all tailored to meet the students’ needs,” Ms Berejiklian said. The school, which opened for students and staff at the beginning of the 2017 school year, can accommodate up to 120 students in Kindergarten to Year 12 with disabilities. Education Minister Rob Stokes said the well-thought out facilities would support teachers in developing teaching and learning programs for all students. “All schools, particularly schools like Fernhill, are about fostering great supportive relationships between teachers, students and their families and the built environment here Cont. Late in Term 1, 2017 Year 10 Glenmore Park High School students competed in The Western Sydney University Academy Youth Leadership Masterclass, held at the Parramatta Campus (WSU). The day consisted of inspirational speakers, who had been involved in The Academy previously, delivering an overview of innovative programs they had developed to assist in making a difference in young people’s lives. School teams were then split into a range of sub-teams, each aligned with a category/topic. These included- Social Media and Self, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Sustainability and Hidden Poverty in Western Sydney. Each team was then given a lecture, presented by a WSU lecturer, providing detailed information and statistics around their category/topic. Teams then broke off into groups with the challenge to develop an Action Plan outlining how implementation of their Action Plan could assist in enacting positive change for youth. Congratulations must also go to Glenmore Park High School Year 10 students: Emma Hogan, Noah Burnet, Darius Faletolu and Caolan Hunt for competing in, and winning The Western Sydney University Academy Youth Leadership MasterclassSocial Media and Self. The team were awarded a $1000 cash prize and a mentor from the University to be used to assist them in implementing their project `Unplug and Reconnect’. Funds raised through this initiative will be donated to Headspace to assist in research and support for victims of cyber-bullying. We are truly proud of our students and their great achievement in developing an Action Plan for such a worthwhile initiative. Stay tuned for the implementation stage. ď ˛ Glenmore Park High School Year 10 students (L-R): Darius Faletolu, Emma Hogan, Caolan Hunt and Noah Burnet | Image Supplied

FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH
Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.
Listen to Him There are so many voices in our world scrambling for our attention. Faces on TV, voices on radio telling us how we should think about everything from the latest washing detergent or hair shampoo to how we should think about every political and business decision that is made. We are bombarded by ideas on everything from how we should dress to the type of car we should drive to advertisers telling us what we should buy to make us happy and healthy. In what has been called the “information age” it seems many people feel overloaded with information! But not only do people feel overloaded, it is so difficult to make fair, reasonable assessments of the truthfulness of these claims. Is any of it reliable? Will it really make a difference? From all of these competing voices is there one voice to rise above the others? A voice to bring clarity; to bring reality? In the Bible’s book of Matthew, in what must have been an extraordinary moment, there is a time when Jesus was with his disciples, and God spoke to the disciples saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” Here is the voice that stands out from the crowd! At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, across all age groups, it has been the testimony of those who attend that they have found that as Jesus “speaks” through the pages of the Bible it is a

“voice” freeing people to live the way God intended. It is a “voice” giving real sight, lifting them from the oppression of this life and giving them real direction and confident hope. Who are you listening to? Who are you getting your values and ideas and opinions from? It’s Getting Chilly! Imagine not having a warm bed to sleep in or a roof over your head? Too many people in Penrith face homelessness this winter and local Glenmore Park resident Debbie O’Connor is planning to make a difference - but she needs your help! Last year Debbie ran a denim challenge out of her coworking space, The Creative Fringe. The space is not only a place for people to work, it actively promotes creative thinking and celebrating your difference. The denim challenge was to turn old skirts that were donated to The Creative Fringe into different items that were then put up for auction on eBay. “We were so impressed with the incredible talent and creativity that everyone demonstrated. From teddy bears to bags, aprons, dresses and blankets, we were able to raise nearly $400.” The money was donated to First Seeds Fund who provide assistance to women and children in Western Sydney. This year Debbie’s plan is to bring some warmth to the homeless in Penrith. The ‘Think Outside the Square Knitting Challenge’ encourages anyone who can or who wants to learn to knit, to get stitching a simple 20x20cm square. The squares will need to be handed into The Creative Fringe by 30 June where Debbie and her happy helpers will sew the squares together to make blankets. The blankets will be donated to Mama Lana’s Community Foundation for them to hand out to their patrons. Apart from warmth, these blankets will also be a symbol of love, generosity and kindness. If you would like to be part of the challenge please knit as many squares as you can and have them delivered to The Creative Fringe at Unit 6, 51 York Road, Jamisontown or call the team on 1300 722 896. Be Thankful – Be Rich Most of us wish we could be rich, but defining “rich” isn’t straightforward. Often people who accumulate great wealth can still be poor. They feel the need to accumulate more because they have a “fear of not having enough”, and this is true poverty. So a better definition of “rich” is not how much we have accumulated but whether or not we are able to find peace and be thankful for what we have now. It is to be secure enough in our souls to believe we will have enough in the future. To be rich on days when we feel poor we must simply connect with what is good around us and allow ourselves to be thankful for it. If we can be thankful we can be rich whatever our bank balance. While studying in Los Angeles, I left my warm apartment on campus, with dinner cooking in the oven, to go for a walk. Trudging along and feeling down over something or other, I met Ray. He was a homeless man who had just found a new pair of shoes in a dumpster. He was on top of the world, thankful for his find, and alive in his spirit. I had so much, but because I couldn’t be thankful for it, what I had was stolen from me. Ray was rich; I was poor. Western society enslaves us in the dungeon of always wanting something else—the abundance we have is taken from our hands and our false sense of poverty insulates us from God’s stunning goodness. Thanksgiving lifts our eyes to God in appreciation for what we already have, and causes our hearts to burn again with hope in the message of Jesus Christ that God loves us and wants to bring us good. Imagine a soul, a marriage, a family, or a community (like Glenmore Park) that is truly thankful rather than living out of a “fear of not having enough”. This speaks about living well. Live life well, Paul From. Pg 1
New $17 Million Fernhill School Officially Opened has been shaped with this front of mind,” he said. The NSW Government has provided more than $1 billion directly to schools or through specialist programs and services to assist students with disability or special needs in either regular or support classes. For 2017, an extra 124 specialist support classes were established in NSW public schools to cater for an additional 850 extra students. Approximately 25 of these specialist classes were created in south-western Sydney. Mrs Davies welcomed this major investment in education in the Mulgoa electorate, following last month’s multimillion dollar commitment to rebuild St Clair High School. Over the last two financial years, more than $1 billion has been allocated to public school infrastructure. A total of $2.6 billion has been allocated for capital investment in public schools for 2016-17 to 2019-20. You can't keep this until you have given it. A promise.

How Do Empathy?
You
Teach
Children
It is difficult to teach empathy to children under the age of 4 years. This is; because the logical, rational, thinking part of the brain (cerebral cortex) doesn’t start heating up until the age of 4 years. To demonstrate empathy, you need to have something called ‘theory of mind’, that is you need to understand that other people have thoughts and feelings of their own. Young children are egocentric, they think that the universe revolves around them. Kids start to develop theory of mind from about the age of 4. Some kids are better at it than others, depending on their temperament and personality. Children who have autism or other disabilities/disorders may take a bit longer to develop theory of mind. The ability to take in another person’s perspective really kicks in around Grade 3, but it is still a slow process. It requires a lot of prompting and role modelling. Here is how I teach it at school… 1. Noticing how another person feels (facial expression, body language, what they say, the situation).“You look ….” “Are you OK?” . “How are you going today, you seem…” 2. Listening. This is where you say nothing, and you LISTEN. 3. Show empathy. “If that happened to me, I would feel…”. “I’m sorry that happened to you.” 4. Offer assistance. “How can I help?” If the person wants to be left alone, allow that, but check on them a bit later. If you are worried about the person, speak to a trusted adult. No child or young person should feel like they are responsible for another child or young person. What’s unhelpful in responding to someone else’s strong feelings? • Being dismissive – saying things like ‘you’ll be alright’, ‘suck it up’, ‘at least…’, ‘get over it’, ‘don’t be a cry baby’, ‘man up’, ‘stop being a drama queen’. • Talking about yourself. • Telling them what they should do. • Changing the subject. • Gossiping or spreading rumours. People who try to push others out of their strong feelings are usually uncomfortable with those feelings, and are attempting to make themselves feel better. Head over to the blog https://handsheartsminds.wordpress. com/ for some great videos about empathy, and a poster on this topic. They are all under the heading of “Skills for Kids”. JUNE BIRTHDAYS

You Can Dance Takes on L.A! You Can Dance Performing Arts School in Emu Plains recently had an entourage of 110 students and their families embark on an incredible Cheer and Dance adventure to Los Angeles. The itinerary was jam packed with tours, family time and extraordinary learning opportunities for their students. They participated in workshops at Disneyland with their Youth Performing Arts program lead by Aussie Josh Horner, with World Champion Cheerleading coaches at ‘Pacific Coast Magic Cheer’ (one of the most successful cheerleading facilities in America) and at ‘The Edge Performing Arts’ with L.A’s best Dance instructors. You Can Dance’s students also performed on Hollywood Boulevard at Madame Tussauds and of course Disneyland! One of the highlights of their trip was competing in an All American Cheerleading competition at the Anaheim Convention Centre ‘The American Showcase’, where they won a host of awards, taking home a swag of banners and prizes. Several YCD teams also placed 1st in their categories making them Nationals Champions! “We opened up this opportunity to all families at YCD and had a mix of students from the ages of 5 to 25 and we incorporated into competition teams in both cheer and dance, as well as dance performances! Some incredible lifetime memories were made in our unforgettable journey – what an opportunity for our kids! We are beyond proud of our students and thank ‘Gullivers Sport Travel’ and local company ‘Cheer/Dance Travel’ for tailor making an amazing itinerary, a once in a lifetime for our students” said studio director Jane Houlihan. Life is Good for Mr Bruce After retiring as the General Assistant of Regentville Public School last year, Bruce Chamberlin, or Mr Bruce as he is known to so many, has quietly enjoyed his time away, although he is still keeping himself active. “It’s amazing that I am still recognised by children who attended Regentville Public School and have since grown up. I could be out shopping and they come up and say ‘Hi Mr Bruce’. I still have a soft spot for the schoolâ€? said Bruce. Since retiring, he splits his time between helping his son at Mulgoa Valley Bakehouse with doing deliveries and playing lawn bowls for his beloved Wallacia Bowling Club. This includes assisting the kids who participate on Friday mornings for school sport. With Regentville Public School celebrating their 150th Anniversary next year, Bruce reflects fondly on the time he spent working there; “When I started at the school 37 years ago, there was about 50 students and I worked about 7 hours a week there. Since then, the school has gone from strength to strength, with the growth of the local area. There are now 700 odd students, mainly thanks to Glenmore Park feeding the schoolâ€?. ď ś Bruce enjoying his retirement | Image Supplied

For a long time, it was considered biologically inert, even though 1-2g exist in the human body. But growing scientific evidence recognizes that silicon plays an essential role in the formation and maintenance of collagen containing connective tissues such as bone, ligaments and tendons. Silicon facilitates the quality of bone matrix (the collagen reinforcing in bone) and bone mineralization. Research shows that silicon is involved in the production & structural stabilisation of bone collagen. It then aids the process of proper deposition of calcium around bone collagen to make ‘bone’. Increased intake of bioavailable silicon has been associated with increased bone mineral density. In the 1970s, dietary deficiency in animals was shown to result in connective tissue & bone defects. Animal studies show that silicon is needed for: • bone formation independent of vitamin D • cross-linking of collagen and proteoglycans during bone growth • to make the collagen in bone matrix more calcifiable In silicon deficiency, bone collagen formation is depressed. Silicon supplementation has been shown to reduce bone resorption & increases bone formation in an animal model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. In osteoporotic postmenopausal women, supplementation
with monomethyl trisilanol has been shown to increase bone volume and femur and lumbar bone density as well as hip bone density. Horsetail is the highest know plant source of silicon. Silicon can make up to 25% of the dry weight of this plant. Clinical studies in Europe show that incidence of osteoporosis is greatly reduced when some horsetail is added to the diet and fractured bones heal much more quickly when horsetail is taken. So other than horsetail, what are good food sources of Silicon? Natural levels of silicon are much higher in plant foods than in meat or dairy. Certain plants (generally monocotyledons) such as cereal grains, grasses, horsetail and some herbs are known as silicon accumulators. They specifically take up silicon from soil, and accumulate 1020 times the silicon compared with non-accumulating plants (dicotyledons) such as legumes, using it to confer strength and rigidity to their stalks & seed coats. Thus, silicon is highest in the fibrous sections of these foods. For example, rice bran (seed coats) are very high in silicon. The skins of vegetables, that are normally peeled away, are also high in silicon – so don’t peel your veggies. Other foods such as dried fruits and green beans are also good sources. So please, add some horsetail herb and high silicon foods to your diet. They’re a great insurance policy against and a treatment option for, osteoporosis.

Adopt a Friend for Life! Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 3 lovely kittens ready for adoption now! The kittens are 3 months old. There are 2 female tortoiseshell colour and 1 ginger male. They have medium long coats. They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including; providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit. Check out our website for more information www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.

SMSF…. What Is It? Tell Me More About Self Managed Super Funds We all hear our friends talk about it, I am sure you have plenty of questions you want to know about setting up your own Self Managed Super Fund (SMSF). Karlie Scharfenberg from The Loans Suite and Craig Small from Evolution Wealth have created a mini Q & A for you with some basics you can either sit there and say “oh I already know that” or “wow I want to know more” With the end of the financial year looming yet again, what better time to run a small article about the wonderful world of SMSF ? The first thing to remember is that every family and every person is individual to their own financial situation, so your mate at the BBQ who seems to have it all may not have told you all!! How can you find out if this suits your family? Speak with your Broker or Financial Planner so you can have your own solutions tailored to suit your own situation. The below Six Q & A might assist with some ideas and planning you may wish to look further into… Who Can Help Me With SMSF Advice? An Accountant or Financial Planner What Are The Costs Of Setting Up A SMSF And Who Pays For It? Approx $5,000 in total, however it is generally charged at the end of the set up when all super has been rolled over into your nominated SMSF bank account, so your SMSF is paying for the fee. This fee would cover all costs associated and will be explained and broken down upon each individual scenario.
How Much Super Would I Need To Buy A Property In My Fund? A sole or combined balance of at least $150,000 or more with a minimum deposit of 20-30% plus stamp duties. Can I Purchase A Property With My SMSF? Yes, you can buy an investment property but not for owner occupied purposes. If you are self employed and currently renting a factory or office you can purchase a commercial property in your SMSF and your business can lease that property from you. There are may different investment options available. What Other Requirements Do I Need To Meet? You need to be working either as an employee or self employed and have regular employer or personal super contributions made to a Super fund already. Can I Have Personal Insurances Such As Life, Income Protection And Illness Paid For From My Super Fund? Yes you can, the Financial Planner will be able to set all of these up for you at the time of setting up the fund, that way you are covered with your insurance and the monthly cost is not coming out of your personal cash flow. (Great for self employed people!)
WHERE TO NEXT? … Call The Loans Suite on 02 4733-4417 to arrange an appointment, we offer joint meetings for SMSF clients with the planner as an initial meeting so you can have all your questions asked at once.
The above information is intended as an overview and is no way intended to act as advice. Readers individual situations may vary significantly. Contact a Broker or Financial Planner for detailed information relating to your personal situation.

FROM EDITOR FROM THE THE EDITOR
Welcome to June! This month's publication brings you a whole host of wonderful articles covering sport, dance, school and community; and what an incredibly inspirational story it is about one local residents’ innovative challenge to ‘think outside the square’ and help the homeless during Winter on page 5. Our delicious Winter recipe on page 10 is sure to tick all the boxes to keep the family satisfied on these chilly nights. A traditional favourite with a twist! Like many of you, we are currently renovating our home. Last month saw us de-clutter at a grand scale and give the nod of approval for work to begin on our first stage of works, Bathroom, Kitchen, and Pool. While I am very excited to be dabbling in a bit of creative design around the home, all I can think of is that we'll be bathing in a portable shower during the bitter cold month of June. Who's idea was this anyway? "Be silly, Be fun, Be different, Be crazy, Be You. Life is too short to be anything else". For now, sit back and warm your toes by the heater and enjoy your Community News.
