Construction Begins For New Primary School At Mulgoa Rise Glenmore Park
Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies visited the site of the new primary school at Mulgoa Rise Glenmore Park for the official sod turn to mark the beginning of the school’s construction. The new primary school will deliver 20 learning spaces; including specialised spaces; core facilities including a school hall, library and administration building. Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said she was proud to turn the first sod to mark the beginning of construction and was pleased to see the project progressing. “The new primary school shows this government’s commitment to deliver for the longer-term needs for our local communities in the area,” Mrs. Davies said. “The new school has been planned to cater for population growth in the area and to allow for expansion of educational facilities as needed in the future. “I look forward to seeing students learning in their new school.” “I’m proud that the NSW Government is delivering this incredible resource for students across the state.” The NSW Government is investing $7.9 billion over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver 215 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW. r Article/Image: Tanya Davies MP
Seven Playspaces To Be Transformed Across The City Penrith City Council will begin upgrades to playspaces across the City this month. Playspaces on Armstein Crescent in Werrington, Brooker & Day Reserve in Colyton, Iron Bark Way in Colyton, Pauline Fields in Penrith, Penrose Crescent in South Penrith and Stapley Street in Kingswood will all be transformed with new play equipment, surface upgrades, additional seating, shade sails, tree planting and landscaping. Nindi Crescent in Glenmore
Park will also receive an upgrade in July. Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said high quality public spaces are vital in bringing the community together. “Playspaces are great for our mental health and provide the community with the ability to come together to be active and socialise. That’s why we’ve been working hard to upgrade playspaces across Penrith to make sure they are modern and inclusive for everyone,” Cr Hitchen said “We’ve worked closely with the local community to develop the final designs for each playspace. This included seeking input on a range of themes to understand what style of playspace and types of equipment residents wanted to see in their local playspace.” Six of the seven playspace upgrades are expected to be completed by mid-2022, with Nindi Crescent to be completed by August 2022. Council is upgrading 40 playspaces over a five-year period between 2019-2024. Upgrades to 16 playspaces have already been delivered. These playspaces were identified through Council’s Sport and Recreation Strategy which is a 15-year road map for the future provision of sport, play, recreation and open space facilities across our City. Beloved Trees For Mum Event Celebrates Successful 15 Years Penrith mums, grandmothers, aunts, and mother figures have been celebrated and honoured with a special Trees for Mum event held by Penrith City Council’s Bushcare team on Mother’s Day. The popular and beloved Trees for Mum event saw a record-breaking turnout for its 15th year, with 228 participants from the Penrith Local Government Area (LGA) and other LGAs planting a total of 225 native plants grown from Council’s very own nursery. The event encourages attendees to write a message for their mum, grandmother, aunt, or mother figure, and dedicate their planted tree in her honour. Councillor Robin Cook attended the day and praised the event for its heartwarming purpose and inclusivity. “It was a fantastic and really positive event on Sunday. There were over 200 trees planted and provided by the nursery; one of those I planted personally, which was a Melaleuca,” Cr Cook said. “People were there for varying reasons; many planting trees as a dedication to a loved one or to people who inspired

them as mums,” she said. “I am a proud supporter of Council’s nursery and the hardworking team behind it. The nursery’s revitalisation provides the opportunity to propagate more native plants for Penrith City. The nursery’s contribution is so valuable for special Council events like this one and lets the community find out more about our local environment. “Especially since COVID, people are becoming more aware of the value of nature and having these areas to go to and appreciate. “With the heat problems we face here, there has also been an increase in interest in tree planting.” Trees for Mum plays an integral role in seeing Council’s Cooling the City Strategy come to life, with the Strategy outlining the ways Council and the community work together to address the urban heat island effect and to lower temperatures across the City. Planting trees has been identified by the Strategy as a simple yet beneficial way to help cool our community’s open spaces. Council has shared a Facebook photo album of the event on its Facebook page, which can be found at facebook.com/ penrith.city.council Council encourages participants to return to Blue Hills Wetland in Glenmore Park to see how their trees are growing. These trees will help provide habitat and shelter for local wildlife and cool the neighbouring community with additional shade. To keep up to date with similar tree planting events, and to book the first spots for Trees for Dad for Father’s Day in September, subscribe to the Bushcare Bulletin at penrith.city/bushcarebulletin

Local Small Business Wins Big Plug After a tough couple of years for Australia’s small businesses, Telstra recently gave a few of them a welldeserved plug. Earlier in March, Telstra kicked off their Telstra Big Plugs for Small Business competition, giving away their ad space during Round 8 of the 2022 Toyota AFL Premiership and Round 9 of the 2022 NRL Telstra Premiership. After entering into the competition, 17 small businesses from across Australia received a big plug at the nation’s biggest football stadiums in a takeover of Telstra’s advertising space. The winning small businesses had their business showcased on the big screen, the signage, and even on the broadcast, helping them to reach millions of fans and living rooms. It was unrivalled exposure. One of those small businesses that won the competition, was Glenmore Park’s Flash Me Photobooths, owned by
Natasha and Steve Economou. The local business’ advertisement was broadcast during Round 8 of the 2022 Toyota AFL Premiership between the Greater Western Sydney Giants and Geelong Cats at Manuka Oval in the ACT. “Winning Telstra’s Big Plugs for Small Business Campaign has meant a lot, not only to me as an individual, but has certainly brought more credibility to my business after a tough couple of years. When clients think of hiring a Photobooth for their event, they’re more likely to remember my business name and brand from the unrivalled exposure showcased at the GWS Giants vs Geelong Cats AFL match” said Natasha Economou of Flash Me Photobooths. “Telstra Big Plugs has definitely opened doors to new business and new contacts, and this is what Flash Me Photobooths thrives on and will continue to thrive on for years to come. I can’t thank Telstra enough for their generosity of giving Flash Me Photobooths such an amazing prize, which wouldn’t have been possible without their incredible support for small businesses” she ended. For more information about Flash Me Photobooths, find them on Facebook or visit their website at www.flashme.net.au. r Natasha and Steve Economou with family and friends with their business displayed on the GWS Giants game day banner | Image Supplied by AFL. FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH
Article Written + Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.gracewest.church Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30am, 10.30am and 5pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week. Do you ever feel that you don’t belong? A sense of belonging is something that we all need as human beings. When you don’t feel you belong, it can be discouraging and depressing. I have felt that way plenty of times! When we come into a relationship with others, we foster that sense of belonging. That feeling might come from family, church or being part of a sports team or 4WD club. However, the word ‘belong’ also has a sense of being owned by another, of having obligations to others. It is the idea of not seeing ourselves as independent beings, but of seeing that we depend on each other. A group of people build a sense of belonging by depending on each other. The Bible also teaches that we can belong to God. Through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, he has ‘bought’ those that trust him. They now belong to Jesus. It is out of this belonging to Jesus that he creates a community, the church, where people belong to each other (Romans 12:5). So often we live for ourselves and wonder why we don’t have a sense of belonging. It is only when we live for others that we will feel that we belong and, ultimately, the most important person to belong to is God. If you want to know more about what it means to belong to God and his people, then come and visit Grace West any Sunday. FAITH - FOOTHILLS CHURCH

Elections and Life-givers
Elections are important, but then we are faced with our own lives. The true way to be happy and content souls, marriages, families, and communities, hinges on whether there are any ‘life-givers’ around. How can we give light, love, and life to others? For example, we can use our talents to enrich life, make it more human, more gracious, and more personal than it would be otherwise. Our talents are a gift from God and should not just be used to advantage ourselves. Could we use them to lift a burden for someone or to help them make progress? We can use our time to give life to those around us. Could we exit work-mode and spend quality time with our spouse and kids? When I play with my four-year- old, he is beaming as if I have given him a million dollars! Turning the TV off and talking with our partner is more life-giving than we realise. We feel important, not alone. Sharing ideas sparks vision and plans for fun in ways the drone of the box could never achieve. We can choose to use our memory to store up the excellent things of our experience. Things that liberate and bring joy (try to recall one such experience from your past week.) And we can choose not to use our memory to store up things that fester, poison, and destroy our living, our life, or the living and life of others. I am thinking about things we hold against others or anxieties that make us feel dark and isolate us from those we love. You might think this is easy to say in the face of your own anxiety or dark thoughts. But we have seen people liberated as we have guided them to draw on God’s help and light, and we can help you too. The Bible teaches that, as we follow Jesus, God helps us become more life-giving. Elections are important, but when they are finished the true hope for our souls, marriages, families, and communities is whether there are life-givers around.

The Bear Project: Dealing with Pet Loss and Grief Pet loss and grief is something that affects many people each and everyday all around the world. Jody Crossley of Glenmore Park has written a book about the loss of her 16-and-a-half-year-old Jack Russell, Bear, and the grief that came with this. The first-time author is due to have her book published later this year. Jody lost her beloved dog Bear in November last year and became debilitated by grief. “I searched for a book about a personal journey on the loss of a pet but couldn’t find one. I decided to write my own book from my journey and experience” said Jody to the Glenmore Gazette. Losing Bear, her Jack Russell has been difficult for Jody. She hopes that her book will help others through this process. “Bear was not only my best friend, my entire world, but the child I don’t have. The grief I experienced was not only heart-breaking, but debilitating. Four and half months on, my heart is still aching for her. This journey highlights the impact not only on myself but the vet industry, workplaces and others who are going through grief. This book brings about hope, inspiration and hopefully comfort for others who are experiencing the loss of the pet” she shared. It is hoped that Jody’s book will create awareness, particularly in workplaces and that she can become an advocate for pets and pet parents and the experiences that take place when losing a pet. She highlights the importance of veterinary practices as unsung heroes who save our pets lives and deal with pet loss daily. To coincide with the book, Jody has created The Bear Project. With costs of $10,000 to edit and publish the book, a GoFundMe page and business sponsorships have been set-up for the public to support the project. The GoFundMe page can be found at https://www.gofundme.com/thebear-project-book. Are Breast-Fed Infants Vitamin K Deficient And If So, Why? Vitamin K deficiency bleeding disorder (VKDB) is common in newborns, with dire consequences for severe cases: 1. intracranial haemorrhage (50%),; 2. persistent neurologic impairment 3. 20% mortality-rate Risk of newborn VKBD is increased for: 1. Babies of mothers using a. warfarin b. anti-seizure medications c. antibiotic rifampicin d. mothers who’ve undergone bariatric surgery 2. Babies suffering: a. diarrhoea, coeliac disease, cystic fibrosis, cholestatic liver-disease b. liver-disease decreasing vitamin K utilisation Since most mothers/newborns don’t suffer these issues, why’s VKDB so common? Although paediatricians recommend breast feeding, the cause of newborn VKDB is clearly inadequate maternal vitamin K intake, leading to deficiency during pregnancy/lactation. To illustrate, when vitamin K injections aren’t given at birth, VKBD prevalence is: 1. 5/105 new-borns (Western Europe) 2. 11/105 (Japan) 3. 72/105 (Thailand) A study by Greer (2001), for 6 months, followed 119 fully breast-
6 June 2022 www.glenmoregazette.com.au
fed infants, who’d received 1mg vitamin K injections at birth, taking blood samples at 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 26 weeks. Researchers found that, despite receiving their vitamin K injection, babies had ‘persistently low vitamin K plasma concentrations’ in all samples from 4 weeks onward. Mothers’ vitamin K1 blood levels were also low, likely due to low intake. Researchers then measured PIVKA, a marker for vitamin K sufficiency, in cord blood of 156 full-term new-born infants, finding half of the babies had significantly low vitamin K levels. Finally, the mothers of these infants were found to be eating: 1. Just-equal-to or below the 60µg/day RDI for Vitamin K1, as it stood in 2005. 2. 33% below the 90µg/day RDI as currently recommended by Harvard university 3. 76% below the 250μg/day required to prevent osteoporosis according to the Framingham study The authors recommended higher intakes of vitamin K for pregnant and lactating mothers, suggesting lactating mothers supplement vitamin K1 at 5 mg/day to increase breast-milk levels to 80ng/mL, thus significantly increasing infant blood vitamin-K. The intake of vitamin-K required for optimal function of all vitamin-K-dependent proteins is still unknown. Given the high prevalence of newborn-VKDB, it seems highly likely most mothers aren’t eating the foods to meet babies’ vitamin-K requirements. If you’d like to learn how to eat better for pregnancy, why not call us at the clinic.

Are you looking to join a local exercise group? Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk is a walking group for women, established in December 2020. The inspiring ladies meet outside of Nepean Coffee Club at Tench Reserve every Wednesday night at 5pm (March to October) for a coffee and a chat, before they head off together on the 6.5km Great River Walk at 6pm. From November to February, the walk begins at 7pm. With the recent lockdowns leaving the group to cancel some weeks, they are back and welcome any women wishing to join their group. “We meet an hour before the walk commences for coffee or tea. This is an opportunity to welcome new walkers, and for existing walkers to get to know each other. Five to ten minutes before the walk, we have a quick catch-up, then we start. Some women walk part of the way and turn around, whilst others proceed to finish the entire distance. All women are very supportive of each other’s physical ability, speed and endurance” explained Angela Lambros of Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk. The group was started by locals Angela Lambros and Jesseka Flakelar. They were motivated to start the group after the success of Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk and the positive impact it has on the community. “As Jesseka and I work in the mental health industry, we are passionate about starting conversations around mental health and normalising these experiences. Connections you make through relationships, places, and social activities can build a safety net for your physical and mental health. Healthy connections are known to lower levels of anxiety and depression and raise self-esteem,” said Angela. Angela and Jesseka believe the key to the group’s success is when members connect with one another. “We enjoy seeing women connect. During this time of isolation and hardship, it is something we believe all of us need! We couldn’t be happier to see women coming together”. The community can also help the group by financially providing coffee sponsorship for the group’s walkers.
Our top priority is to support your wellbeing and nourishment to enhance your ability to to remain in your own home for longer where you are happiest.

Babies have long been misunderstood. When the field of psychology emerged in the early twentieth century, the earliest psychologists thought maybe infants just needed a reliable food source. Later, psychologists John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth first sketched out the idea of “attachment”. Attachment refers to an infant’s need to connect emotionally with their primary caregiver. Babies know they are at the mercy of an adult to have their needs met. In the first 18 months of life, infants cannot even carry themselves from one place to another, let alone feed themselves! Babies communicate by facial expressions and movements. These “cues” signal an unmet need. For example, a baby may jerk its body and pucker its lips when it needs the breast or bottle. Babies experience optimal mental and physical health when their parents read their cues and respond appropriately most of the time. Thanks to brain imaging, we now know there is a massive brain growth in the first 5 years. A newborn’s brain weighs around 400 grams (approx. the size of an orange). By the age of 3, the size of a child’s brain has more than doubled to about 1100 grams (approx. the size of a pineapple). Experiencing a warm and responsive relationship with a parent in the early years builds healthy brains. Parents often feel confused or frustrated when their baby cries, especially when there is a lot of crying! Crying expresses the need for physical and emotional closeness to parents. Babies experience a lot of stress if they are left to cry alone. Large, frequent doses of hormones associated with the stress response, such as cortisol, can interfere with brain growth. Therefore, it is important to minimise stress by responding to baby’s cries promptly whenever possible. In summary, what a baby needs most is you. If you are struggling with anything mentioned in this article, you can consult an early childhood nurse by calling Tresillian Parent Help Line on 1300 272 73. Infant Mental Health Awareness Week runs every June to highlight the importance of babies' emotional wellbeing and development. Find out more at aaimh.org.au.

Mega Effort for Mega Mates Last month, a team of dedicated local swimmers took to the pool for a gruelling 24-hour swim, whilst raising much needed funds for charity. The team of 19 swimmers, nicknamed MSMM Megaswim Mega Mates, took part in the MS Megaswim on 14th and 15th May at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre. Swimming a total of 89.3kms over 24 hours, they have raised over $11,000, with $10,936 confirmed and another $600 awaiting to be added to the team’s tally. Representing Glenmore Park was Joshua Auld (Teacher’s Aide), Talan Quinn, Emma Borg (students) of Glenmore Park High School and Klarissa Goodwin of Penrith Anglican College. Jack, William, and Ava Barry of Penola Catholic College represented Mulgoa. The MS Megaswim involved teams swimming around the clock from midday Saturday to midday Sunday, always having a swimmer in the water throughout the 24-hours. Swimmers raise money in the form of donations and all money raised contributes to MS Go for Gold Scholarships, financial assistance programs and providing services to directly benefit people living with Multiple Sclerosis. “The team’s motivation was to use a sport that they all participate in or have participated in to help make a difference to the lives of sufferers of this chronic disease, Multiple Sclerosis” explained Charmaine Auld, mother of Joshua Auld and team spokesperson. “It is particularly close to the heart of two of the team members, who have seen firsthand how this disease has affected a family member over the last few years” she continued. What is Leptospirosis? It can affect Dogs, Cats and Humans Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with a kind of bacteria called Leptospira. Leptospirosis can cause kidney failure and liver failure, and occasionally severe lung disease and bleeding disorders. The clinical signs of Leptospira infection vary considerably from no signs of infection, to just a mild illness of short duration from which the animal recovers quickly on their own, to severe disease and even death. With regard to companion animals, dogs are most susceptible to developing leptospirosis but generally infection is rare. Cats and other animals can also be affected, including humans. Outbreaks in some piggeries and cattle herds, particularly dairy, may occur in unvaccinated animals. Small mammals such as rodents are often carriers and shed the bacteria in their urine. Your pet can become infected and potentially develop leptospirosis if: • Their mucous membranes (i.e. lips, tongue, gums, inside of the eyelids) or any broken skin (i.e. a wound) comes into contact with infected urine or something that is contaminated by infected urine (for example, soil, water, food). • They eat tissue from an animal or carcass that is infected. • They are bitten by an animal that is infected. • Rarely, through breeding or if a pregnant female passes the infection through the placenta to her puppies. • Signs of leptospirosis may include: • Fever • Lethargy • Sore muscles and a reluctance to move
• • • • • • •
Shivering Increased drinking Increased or decreased frequency or amount of urination Dehydration Vomiting Diarrhoea Jaundice (where the skin and mucous membranes become yellow in colour) • Eye inflammation • Difficulty breathing • Bleeding (including blood in vomit or faeces, saliva, bleeding from the nose and small red spots on mucous membranes or pale skin from bleeding) • Fluid accumulation causing swollen legs, distended abdomen or restricted ability to breathe If you have any concerns about your pet, please contact your vet as soon as possible. Leptospirosis can be treated, usually with antibiotics and supportive care. The chance of recovery depends on how severely the dog is affected, and how quickly they receive veterinary treatment. What Can Be Done To Prevent Leptospirosis? There are vaccines available in dogs that can effectively prevent leptospirosis. You can also reduce your dog’s risk of infection by minimising your dog’s potential exposure to Leptospira bacteria. Avoid your dog drinking from or swimming in waterways that pose a potential risk and minimise their contact with potentially infected animals such as farm animals and rodents, including making sure that they do not eat carcasses.

Lions Make Public Donate Life Aware
Bringing your
Vision to Life
Emu Plains Lions and grandparents, Cheryl and Jim Devine recently visited the Donate Life stand at the Lions Zone Wellbeing Forum, held at Penrith RSL. The Devine’s are keen supporters of the organ and tissue transplant initiative with their Glenmore Park granddaughter, Kyla Devine receiving a liver transplant some 14 years ago as a 3-month-old. Kyla, who was born with biliary atresia, a liver disease, would not have lived but for a donor liver. Now she is a healthy, happy high school student, who loves netball, swimming, and dancing. Everyone 16 years and older can register their donation decision of the Organ Donation Registry. It takes less than a minute. To register your decision, visit www.donatelife.org.au. One organ donor can save the lives of 7 people - with tissue and eye donation. Today, around 1,800 Australians and their families are desperately waiting for the call that a life-saving organ has become available. They are counting on the generosity of a donor and their family willing to give the gift of life. The gift of organ and tissue donation gives recipients a second chance at experiencing all the love, joy, and adventure that life has to offer. Thousands of Australians are living their lives to the fullest because of the generosity of organ and tissue donors and their families. Since then, there are now 1,600 members, averaging 20 new members per month. “I found there was a lack of information available on the Nepean River for local boaters, fisherman etc” explained Darren to the Glenmore Gazette. “Boaters require live and up to date information on the waterways. There is no better way of obtaining that data than to speak directly with people on the water at that time” he continued. Whilst general information about the Nepean River is regularly shared, recent times have documented weather events, such as the floods, in detail. “We have people sharing their fishing trips, kayaking adventures through to water sports and generally enjoying what the river has to offer. “We do avoid business advertising and business posts; however, we encourage boaters to advertise boat related items they may have for sale” Darren stated. Whether it’s spending time on the water or admiring the river’s beauty from its banks, Darren appreciates the many things that our iconic waterway has to offer. “It’s certainly changed over time. I really enjoy my wakeboarding, however, when not on the boat, I can be found enjoying a coffee by the river” he smiled. If you would like to join the local group, search Nepean River Boaters Page on Facebook.

Planting for Platypus Join Penrith City Council, Greater Sydney Landcare Network and Mulgoa Valley Landcare Group as they help plant habitat for the platypus at Schoolhouse Creek. Did you know Platypus eDNA has been found in the creeks and rivers in the Penrith Local Government Area? So that the platypus can thrive in our LGA, they need your help to improve its habitat! They’ll be meeting on World Environment Day and, • Planting native species to provide native habitat for the platypus. • Hear from Dr Michelle Ryan from Western Sydney University, School of Science. Dr Ryan will be sharing some of her research on the local platypus and how we can help protect them. • Having some fun doing a water bug activity with Tom Covell from Hooked on Nature. As the platypus’ favourite food is water bugs, Tom will be showing us what water bugs live in the creek. • Kids can have some fun at the kids’ activity table with platypus activity sheets. On-site training, tools, and refreshments will be provided. Please wear long sleeves, long pants, closed sturdy shoes, a hat and sunscreen. They recommend bringing at least 2 litres of drinking water and your own gardening gloves for COVID-19 safety considerations. Registrations are essential as spaces are limited. Register at: https://bit.ly/3NjJ17I Instructions on parking and the exact meeting point will be provided to those who have registered. You will need to provide your own transportation to the site. For insurance purposes, you must be accompanied by an adult if you are under 16 years old. About Creating Canopies This event is part of the Creating Canopies project in the Greater Sydney tree planting project. Funding has been provided by the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment to Greater Sydney Landcare Network in partnership with Landcare NSW as part of the NSW Government’s Priority “Greening Our City”.

Here we are in June with, not just a new month, but a new Australian Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese. We welcome Albo and congratulate our local Federal MP’s who have been elected to represent our communities. And, of course, Winter is now upon us. Fireplaces, hot chocolate, and warm blankets are keeping the cold chill at bay. It’s also the perfect opportunity to put your feet up and enjoy the June edition of ‘Your Community News’. Whether it’s Kid’s Corner, Paws A While or Health Matters, there’s something for everyone of all ages! We’ve been bringing local news and businesses direct to the letterboxes of over 27,000 homes across 20 suburbs and 83,000 readers for over 23 years; we value our advertisers and readers who continue to make this possible. We hope that you continue to reach your goals and beyond, as we head towards the second part of the year. Michele Ruiz once said, “If people are doubting how far you can go, go so far that you can’t hear them anymore”.
