School’s In For Fernhill Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, has welcomed the newly-established Fernhill School, as it officially opened its doors to students at the beginning of the school term. Fernhill School is a $16.1 million, purpose-built facility, which will accommodate up to 160 students from Kindergarten through to Year 12, catering for young people with intellectual and physical disabilities. “It was a pleasure to speak with Principal Julie Raciborska, teachers, staff, students and parents at Fernhill School, discussing the wonderful opportunities that will be afforded to our community, as a result of this desperately-needed school, in supporting all of our children in Mulgoa to reach their full potential,” Tanya Davies said. Tanya Davies was particularly impressed by the passion, excitement and enthusiasm of all the teachers and staff, with a particular emphasis on providing exacting standards on delivering best-quality education for all of the students that will attend Fernhill School. “I have been blown away by the sense of community that is already developing at Fernhill School, a sure sign that students and staff alike will thrive,” said Tanya Davies. Principal Julie Raciborska expressed her eagerness and anticipation in her new role. “I am extremely privileged to be the Principal of this wonderful school and am thoroughly enjoying working with families and staff to develop the skills of all the students enrolled – it’s an exciting learning journey,” Principal Raciborska said. “Throughout my conversations, what has really been emphasised is the fact that Fernhill School is committed to providing a holistic education for students, something that I am  Tanya Davies MP, with Principal Julie Raciborska | Image Supplied

Farewell Friend! One of the last Glenmore Park Town Centre ‘original’ retailers has bid farewell, with David Anastasov, AKA Diamond Dave, closing his shop Diamond Dave’s Hair Studio last month after 16 years of service to the local area. “We started the business in December 2000, about two weeks before Christmas, 16 years ago. I remember it just like thatâ€? said Diamond Dave. “The shop has been sold to a local man who already has a business in the Plaza. He’s going to expand the business. The new shop will be called Glamour Hair. I’m still going to be working for him, probably three days a week. My plan is to move to Byron Bay to build a new house, hopefully by May. You’ll still see me around the areaâ€? he said. Whilst working in the community of Glenmore Park, Diamond Dave has seen many different changes over the years; “When we started, we had about 3,000 population and we’re looking at about 25,000 now. We’re getting another generation of people having babies, which is two generations of hair cutting I’ve done now. It’s becoming a lot more multicultural, which is good. Families are getting bigger and so is the shopping centre. There are also better facilities available now. Everything is bigger and betterâ€?. Dave won’t be hanging up the scissors just yet and plans on opening another little barber shop in Byron Bay and hopes to introduce coffee or a well-being centre there. Proving that he won’t be slowing down, he also wants to take up surfing and a bit of music. He will certainly miss the people of Glenmore Park, as will the community. “The local spirit and support from all the locals has been great. It’s a pretty personal sort of estate and everyone becomes like a big familyâ€? he explained. On behalf of the local community, the District Gazette would like to thank Diamond Dave for his years of service at the Glenmore Park Town Centre. Best of luck catching those waves! ď ˛ď€ Thank you Diamond Dave | Image Supplied TRAFFIC ALERT

Submissions Report Released For The Northern Road Upgrade Roads and Maritime Services advises the submissions report for the Review of Environmental Factors (REF) and concept design for The Northern Road upgrade between Glenmore Parkway at Glenmore Park and Jamison Road at South Penrith is now available. A Roads and Maritime spokesperson said 41 responses were received about the project, which forms part of the $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan, jointly funded by the NSW and Australian governments. “Comments were sought by the community in October and November last year about the concept design for this important upgrade, the spokesperson said. “The majority of the responses received were in favour of the proposal. “After considering all responses, Roads and Maritime will incorporate some minor design changes into the proposal. “These changes involve removing the median island south of Glenmore Parkway to provide a right turn lane for vehicles entering properties on the western side of The Northern Road, until work between Littlefields Road and Glenmore Parkway is complete.

“The kerbside parking between Stafford Street and the Great Western Highway will be removed to provide three travel lanes in each direction along The Northern Road. “To offset this removal, some parking available on the Great Western Highway near Kingswood Train Station and on Somerset Street will be changed to unrestricted parking. Work on the project is expected to start in mid-2017 and be completed by 2020, weather permitting. Lendlease has signed a contract with Roads and Maritime to design and build this section of The Northern Road Upgrade. “Work will include widening The Northern Road to provide a divided road with three traffic lanes and a bus lane in each direction, building a new bridge across the M4 Motorway and removing the existing bridge and installing new traffic lights at some intersections to improve safety, the Roads and Maritime spokesperson said. “The public will be advised of times and dates closer to the start of work. For more information on the project and to view the interactive video, visit www.rms.nsw.gov.au/thenorthernroad.

FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

Meet Nigel and Fiona Vaux I am very excited to announce that in January this year, Nigel Vaux, with his wife Fiona, and three children, Chloe, Grace and Byron, began full time ministry at Glenmore Park Anglican Church as our new Children’s Minister! Nigel comes to Glenmore Park with over 14 years of great experience of working in Children’s Ministries. He is keen to see the children in Glenmore Park and the surrounding suburbs know the difference that Jesus can make to their lives. He is also keen to work with parents to help equip them in their responsibilities as parents. Nigel joining the Ministry Team at our Church is such an important step because it means that our Ministry to children can continue to flourish in Glenmore Park and beyond. The Bible reveals how much Jesus values children. Jesus said “Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Because Jesus valued children, at Glenmore Park Anglican we too want to value and care for children and in the ministries of our Church we want to reflect this. Our ministries to children include Sunday Kids, School Scripture in the local Primary Schools, Voltage, (our Thursday afternoon Primary aged Kids Club), and our upcoming Easter Kids Holiday Club kicking off Tuesday 18th April. (Watch this space for more information!)

Just ‘Drop-In’ Are you struggling to make ends meet this month? Do you know someone who is? Sometimes we all need help to get through tough times. Glenmore Park Anglican Church has partnered with Anglicare to be an emergency relief point for Glenmore Park providing short term temporary support in the form of food and toiletries. They can also refer you on to other services for longer term help. It’s called “The Drop-In” because you can literally drop in and connect with them and, if you want, get a cuppa and a bickie. The Drop-In is held at Glenmore Park Anglican Church every Friday from 1-4pm and it’s open to anyone. It’s run as part of Glenmore Park Anglican’s Hope+Help ministry. This is their ministry seeking to connect with people in our community and support people where they’re at. They do it because God sent Jesus to save us by His amazing love and mercy. And so they, in turn, seek to love others. As it says in 1 John 4:19 “We love because he first loved us.” Hope+Help have many programs and partnerships in our local area. They have teams running small groups in the boys prison, running events at the women’s domestic violence refuge, serving the homeless for Mama Lana’s Community Foundation in Penrith and they run a variety of collections and appeals throughout the year - all because he loved us first. The Drop-In is their newest initiative and they are hoping that they will be able to reach many people in Glenmore Park who are really doing it tough. A lot of people think that Glenmore Park is picture perfect and everyone is sorted. The truth is that beneath the surface of tree lined streets and cute pocket parks, a lot of people are hurting. If that is you, please know you’re not alone and they are here to support you. For more information, phone Glenmore Park Anglican Church on 4733 1635.

It has been a real joy for myself and others in our Church to see our children happily meeting together throughout the week. But perhaps the greatest joy is seeing our children grow and mature and make a real difference in our world because of their trust and faith in Jesus. Nigel and Fiona would love to meet you and have you and your family join them on Sundays, where you, like many others in Glenmore Park, have the opportunity to find real life by connecting with Jesus and connecting with others. To find out more, check us out on Facebook or our website (see the details above), give me a call on 4733 1635 or simply turn up – we would love to see you!

Something to Crowe About Chances are that you may not know local brothers Aydan and Riley Crowe by name, but you certainly would have seen their faces on television and in print before! In just a short time, the Glenmore Park duo have both worked as extras for television commercials airing both here and abroad. Older brother Aydan models for catalogues, whilst Riley has featured in advertisements on TV for Rebel Sport, The Smith Family and most recently Movie Buzz. “Aydan told us when he was 8 that he wanted to be on Home and Away, so we enrolled him in an agency. Riley started last year after watching Aydan do it for years” said Simone Crowe, the boy’s Mother. Aydan and Riley love seeing themselves on TV or in print. Riley particularly loves it when the kids at school notice he has been on TV and ask if it is “really him?”. When asked what they like the best about modelling and acting, the boys enjoy meeting new people and experiencing what it is like to work in the industry. It’s certainly something they want to continue with when they are older. “The experience they get is great. They have set backs when they don’t always land a casting, but that doesn’t stop them from going back again. They enjoy being on set and meeting people. They spend a lot of time sitting around waiting and repeating the same scenes over and over, so they learn a lot about being patient” explained Simone. For anyone wanting to enrol their children into an agency for modelling or acting, Simone also has this advice; “Make sure you are with a reputable agency. Ask lots of questions and be prepared to be flexible with your time”. The District Gazette looks forward to watching the Crowe brothers and following their amazing journey.

Unfamiliar Water Activities

Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School

Children who regularly attend lessons become very familiar with their environment, the warm clear water, the line on the bottom of the pool, a teacher who is alert and aware of the child’s limits and expectations; and confidence with the pool’s edge. Similar could be said for children who regularly swim in a backyard pool supervised by parents. They will display this by always entering the pool the same way. They might have a place they are confident with jumping in and climbing out of. In other areas of the pool like the deeper end they may also show reluctance. When you take your family to an unfamiliar water activity here are a few things to consider: • Your child performs best when they are relaxed and anxiety or panic will not be helpful. • The water may be cold, salty or murky and difficult to stand up in as the floor may be unstable. • There may be varying levels of depth. • Varying weather conditions. When planning your next family fun day at an unfamiliar water space, be prepared to get wet. Your supervision skills will be heightened if you’re in the water with your child. You will understand the sensory experience of cold water, salty water and pressure of waves or an unstable standing surface. This will help you to best support and comprehend for your child’s experience. Regular attendance at swimming lessons combined with swimming with mum or dad will help improve the child’s confidence and fitness as well as help parents to understand their child’s limits. This approach will help create a positive water experience for a safe family day out.

Finding Inner Strength at the End of Your Rope What do you do when you are “at the end of your rope”? This might mean you can’t handle the kids or someone who is driving you nuts at work. It might mean your marriage or finances just aren’t working out and you don’t know what to do. It might mean you can’t find peace or happiness and feeling there is no point makes you cry in secret. Some people march on as if nothing is happening but die inside. Others descend into depression or some other darkness. Some end up hurting people they love by having sex with someone other than their spouse or partner to feel better, but end up separated from those who truly love and support them. Being consistently at the end of our rope can leave us angry, cynical and bitter. This sort of stuff just eats us up from the inside. How do you cope? The Bible invites us to turn toward God when we are at the end of our rope. The idea is that because God is loving He desires to help us, and because God is also powerful He has the capacity to help us. The Bible teaches that if we know our need for God and turn our hearts toward him we will experience God’s blessing. Two people can face the same challenges in life – one falls apart but the other one can cope because they are inwardly strong. We experience not coping because of what is happening inside us in our hearts and souls – because of fear, anger, hopelessness, insecurity and other such things there. When we turn our hearts toward God His love and truth touches these raw parts of us and makes us inwardly strong. If you are at the end of your rope and would like help to turn your heart toward God and find inner strength, I’d love to hear from you (0413806977 or paul@fvc.org.au). Live life well, Paul From. School’s In For Fernhill incredibly excited by the prospect of,” Tanya Davies said. As part of Fernhill School’s commencement, a 40 km/h school zone has been installed along Ridgetop Drive, Glenmore Park, for a length of 260 metres to cover the active access point along the street and also along a short length of road on Wattlebird Crescent. “In line with standard practices, 40 km/h school zones are provided on roads with an active direct access point from the school, so as to ensure safe access for our children, as they attend school, during morning and afternoon peak periods,” said Tanya Davies. The school zone will follow guidelines mandated across the State and operate between 8am and 9:30am in the morning, as well as from 2:30pm to 4pm during the afternoon, on gazetted school days. “All children deserve a quality education, which is precisely what Fernhill School represents. The Berejiklian Government remains steadfast in meeting the needs of the people of NSW, including here in Western Sydney and I will always be at the forefront of achieving this,” Tanya Davies said.

Glenmore Park Welcomes New Aussie Branch The community of Glenmore Park can lay claim to a new home loans business right on their doorstep, with Aussie recently opening a brand new office at Glenmore Park Town Centre. Franchisee Graham Oxlade is proud to call the local area home and already has 15 years of financial experience working with Aussie Home Loans. Graham and his friendly team consisting of Jason and Jessica are excited to offer Aussie’s extensive range of loans. You’ll find 1,500 different loan options from all the major banks and second tier lenders plus non-bank lenders. They also offer Mortgage Protection Insurance plus Home and Contents at very competitive rates. “Guarantor loans are the types of home loans we tend to see the most of in the local area. 40% of our new loans are for first home buyers being supported by their parents as guarantors. What makes this attractive is that the parents don’t need to lend their kid’s money, rather it’s simply the case of the bank leveraging off the equity the parents have built up in their homes. Given recent rises in house prices within Glenmore Park, just about anyone can do it” said Graham who enjoys working in the local community and servicing the area. “Living locally gives me a unique perspective on the issues facing Glenmore Park home buyers and I feel we are better positioned to offer tailored solutions for clients with limited savings and small deposits” he said. “Aussie’s intention is to be the leading home loan provider in Glenmore Park” explained Graham. Their address is Shop 7E, Glenmore Park Town Centre, 1-11 Town Terrace in Glenmore Park. Their phone number is 4737 9033. Jason Douthwaite (L) and Graham Oxlade (R) from Aussie Glenmore Park| Image Supplied

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com One of the best lessons that I teach at school, is the difference between Aggressive, Assertive, and Passive. This is such a good lesson for children to learn. People who adopt a particular style of relating in childhood tend to take that style into adulthood. They are often not aware of their responses and this can cause difficulties in their relationships. Aggressive is like being a Cranky Crocodile. Cranky Crocodiles are snappy and mean. They only think of themselves. They push other people around. They fly off the handle. Other kids don’t want to play with them. Passive is like being a timid Mouse. A timid Mouse is withdrawn. He does not stand up for himself, and lets others push him around. He then gets resentful and angry, but turns it in on himself. Assertive children stand up for themselves in a kind way. They balance their own needs with the needs of others, and try to find a happy medium. They use their calming down strategies and their problem solving skills. For Assertive, I ask children to conjure up their own image; something that they think is Cool, Calm, and Confident. Assertive kids also use “I Messages” to let other people know how they feel and what they would like. At school, we use a stem statement to help the students remember how to do “I Messages” … “When you __________, I feel __________. Would you please __________?” We also teach the children that just because they use their I Messages, it doesn’t mean the other person will do as they ask. It’s just a better way of communicating. In case you are wondering – yes, even young children do this very well (often better than the older children). Our kindergarten children were using it within a few weeks of learning it with the teacher reinforcing it wherever she could. If you want a poster for the fridge for this skill, jump on to the Hands, Hearts, and Minds blog https://handsheartsminds. wordpress.com/ Come back next month for another fabulous skill to teach your kids. You Can Dance at Emu Plains, a leading Dance, Performing Arts and All Star Cheerleading School recently won a very prestigious award reflecting their ‘team’ philosophy to a tee! The AASCF 2016 Best Sportsmanship Program was awarded to You Can Dance by the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation. The AASCF currently has close to 1000 clubs registered and chose local school You Can Dance as the overall winner at their annual coach’s conference in Homebush. “This award means so much to us as a school. It credits our whole team of staff, students and parents. Our mission at YCD is to foster an environment in our school where everyone works together as a ‘team’. To receive such recognition Australia wide, among so many elite and outstanding programs, for having the Best Sportsmanship is just incredible, very humbling and tells us we are absolutely on the right track with what we are teaching our children” said Jane Houlihan, Director. You Can Dance have been in operation in Emu Plains for 13 years and are setting the standard in exceptional training in all things Dance and Cheer. They have won an incredible number of National Championship titles and International bids in both Cheer and Dance and their school is filled to the brim with winning banners and hundreds upon hundreds of trophies! However, their classes go well beyond the trophies and the choreography, their number one priority is fostering a positive and happy family environment where their students can thrive as people and be part of a great team, where they are accepted and supported. Their focus is 100% on the journey and to produce respectful young people as well as developing their talents and celebrating their achievements. Their ‘team’ philosophy and top notch tuition sees them continue to grow in number and strength, but it’s the extra care and whole school attitude that truly sets them apart. “We are infinitely excited about the year ahead with new programs, better facilities and a huge timetable of classes for absolutely all ages. Winning such a prestigious award is a wonderful start to 2017!” explained Jane Houlihan. Teamwork Makes Dreams Work! | Image Supplied

Border Collie Fun Day! Date: Sunday 2nd April 2017 Time: 11am – 3pm Location: Castle Hill Showground

Dr Katrina Warren and Kelly Gill will be hosting their fifth Border Collie Fun Day at Castle Hill Showground on Sunday 2nd April 2017. ‘Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill are delighted to welcome Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital to our Border Collie Fun Day. Dr Camille Brandt will be our official vet on the day and will also be offering free veterinary checks and answering your Border Collie health

questions.’ The Fun Day will be showcasing a wide variety of Border Collie activities, including tricks, flyball, agility, and nose work. There will also be a special appearance by The Wonderdogs. The Wonderdogs are a team of chocolate Border Collies owned by Kelly Gill of Kerodan Kennels. The Wonderdogs star in many television commercials and work with Dr Katrina Warren on stages all over Australia. There will be stalls, show bags, fun competitions, photo opportunities and interactive activities. Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill are also out to break another world record. The previous world record in 2013 was for the 'most number of dogs ever recorded in a professional photo shoot’, when they had over 500 dogs in a photo! This year’s record attempt is for the “World's Longest ever Conga Line involving dogs at the Border Collie Fun dayâ€?. Border Collies are going PINK at the Border Collie Fun Day to support the National Breast Cancer Foundation! Come along to make history, have fun and support a wonderful cause! HEALTH MATTERS

Calcium For Bones – How Much Do I Need & Where From? The Australian guidelines specify a calcium intake of 1000mg/ day for most adults. So where do you get it??? ‌. From healthy foods, of course! Why? Because getting calcium into bones is a complicated game requiring many different players. Obviously, calcium first needs to be in our foods in reasonable quantities. But then it needs to be extracted from these foods by proper digestion, then absorbed, assimilated into bone (and cells), and finally kept out of arteries & soft tissues. Only ‘healthy foods’ provide a balanced source of - not only calcium, but all of the ancillary nutrients that facilitate calcium’s proper utilisation. These include (but are not limited to) vitamins A, B2, B6, B9 & B12, C, D, E & K, & minerals potassium, magnesium, boron, copper, zinc, strontium, and iron. In short‌ incorporating calcium is really about eating a highly varied low calorie nutrient dense diet! So which foods? Well we are all familiar with the high calcium foods of industry promotional campaigns – milk & cheese! But this is a very one dimensional marketing driven view. It is true that these are good sources of calcium but while cheese is almost unsurpassable as a calcium source, it is extremely high in calories. When it comes to milk, the fact is that there are many foods that are excellent (indeed better) sources of calcium, both in terms of total calcium content and absorbability. These include foods such as sardines, winged beans, carob, tahini, wild

caught pink & red salmon, almonds, parsley, dried figs, spinach, natural yogurt, rhubarb, mussels, snapper, brazil nuts, oysters, mustard cabbage & kale, all better calcium sources than milk! Many dark green leafy vegetables have relatively high calcium content (although some such as spinach and rhubarb are high in calcium oxalates which is a little harder to absorb). Cruciferous vegetables such as kale, bok-choy, broccoli, cabbage etc. are green yet essentially oxalate free, and have much calcium and plenty of the vitamins & minerals to help utilise it. Experiments show that our ability to get calcium from these foods is as good if not better than from milk. Western folk just don’t eat enough (or sometimes any) of these vegetables daily. Having said all this‌ research shows that Thai men & women have calcium intakes between 220-361mg per day. They consume few milk products and calcium comes mainly from vegetables, meat & fish (eaten bones & all). This calcium intake is significantly lower than the 1000 mg/d recommended by our health authorities. Yet the Thai men and women over 50 (and Malaysians with similarly low intakes) have age-adjusted rates of hip fractures almost 2 times lower than more westernised Asians in Hong Kong, Singapore, and U.S. Whites. So, you can now see that whether you get a fracture or not is much less about the calcium you get and more about your overall diet & lifestyle habits!

FROM EDITOR FROM THE THE EDITOR And there it is, March! Almost a quarter of the year gone, just like that! This month we bring you plenty of news and happenings in and across our community. We also bid farewell to a longtime friend, and wish him (and is wonderful family) much success on all that is ahead, see page 3 for the full article. I lose count of how many times I get told that readers can't wait for their copy of the Gazette. It is very humbling to know, that our readers find so much joy amongst these pages. Their reasons differ; some like to have details of local businesses at their fingertips; others love the localised stories; and I must admit.... MANY simply cannot wait for this month's recipe! I am told, as soon as it arrives, the recipe is swiftly removed from the paper and placed on the fridge! This month's recipe is sure to please! I won't spoil it for you, have a sneaky peek at page 11 for all the juicy details! "Don't let the silly little things steal all your happiness" For now, sit back with a cuppa in hand and enjoy (if for only a brief moment) your Community News.
