New Park’nPay Accessibility Portal Goes Live

The NSW Government has already integrated 383 accessible parking spots across four Sydney councils. When completed, the program will cover roughly 3600 accessible parking spots across 30 Sydney Metro councils.

Mr Dominello said users would be able to select a spot with the recognisable wheelchair icon to indicate it is an accessibility bay with the spot being green if it is available to use or red if occupied.

“This is a great example of using technology to be more inclusive and this enhancement will make it easier than ever to plan a journey and find a parking spot,” Mr Dominello said.

“Instead of spending time and wasting petrol driving around looking for an accessible park, we have an innovative solution which gets drivers where they need to go.

“The Park’nPay app will also have an accessibility mode option where customers with a mobile parking permit can customise their experience to search for accessible parking, start a parking session and receive notifications.”

Vice President of Google Cloud – Australia and New Zealand Alister Dias said the NSW Government and Google share a vision for a strong and inclusive digital future for all Australians, and technology can play a pivotal role in helping deliver improved outcomes.

It is now easier for motorists with disabilities to find accessible parking across Sydney streets and carparks, thanks to a new nation-leading Park’nPay Accessibility Portal, giving drivers the power to search for hundreds of accessible spots with the tap of a button.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said the Accessibility Portal is an easy-to-use webbased platform, allowing people to search for accessible parking at their desired location, and filter for the time and day the space is needed as well as by parking type.

“We are continuing our journey to improve the accessibility of services for the more than 400,000 people with mobility parking permits and want to offer them an easy way to find parking before they leave their driveways,” Mr Dominello said.

“It can often be time-consuming for drivers with a disability to find a suitable parking space especially if they are unfamiliar with the area they are travelling to.

“Motorists will be able to use the Accessibility Portal to find a spot which best suits their needs, the number of accessible spaces at a location, get directions and real-time availability for accessible spaces.”

"Working closely with the Department of Customer Service and Physical Disability Council, Google Cloud is optimising the Park'nPay experience by analysing parking sensor data to provide real time parking and travel information, ensuring motorists with disabilities can better plan trips and park with ease,” Mr Dias said.

Physical Disability Council NSW CEO Serena Ovens said: “The Accessibility Portal further enhances our member’s capacity to source accessible parking information easily including the ability to check the streetscape they will be parking in.”

“Any information that assists people with mobility needs to better understand their parking options is welcomed. PDCN applaud Google’s involvement in the Park’nPay app as an important innovation that supports the inclusion of the disability community.”

Real-time parking data will come online in the app as each council area is onboarded and will be completed in 2023.

The Portal is a joint initiative between the NSW Government, Google and the Physical Disability Council of NSW.

Farah Madon Receives Prestigious Community Award

Farah Madon, an architect dedicated to making housing more accessible for those living with disabilities, has been awarded the Local Woman of the Year Award by Tanya Davies MP. The award recognises her significant contribution to the local community, Western Sydney, and her unwavering commitment to making the region more equitable.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies, congratulated Farah on the honour and acknowledged her hard work for the region.

“Farah’s contribution to our community is immeasurable. Her work as an architect is making a significant impact, ensuring that those living with disabilities have access to safe and secure housing. It’s a privilege to recognise her as Local Woman of the Year,” Mrs Davies said.

Women Walking Strong

With International Women’s Day taking place this month, Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk will be marking the occasion on their weekly community walk with an important event.

“We will be celebrating the achievements of us all as women on International Women's Day on Wednesday 8th of March. There will be guest speakers, light refreshments and drinks will be provided” said Angela Lambros of Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk.

The inspirational women’s group meet every Wednesday night (5:00pm from March to September and 6:00pm from October to February), outside the Coffee Club Nepean River for a free sponsored coffee, tea or hot chocolate that has been donated from supporting local organisations. They proceed to walk the Great River Walk at 6:00pm.

“Our hope is that this walk and talk creates a safe space for women to discuss their mental health, whilst bettering their physical health and creating meaningful social connections” Angela explained.

They are also planning significant events throughout the year, which include Easter, Mother’s Day, Women’s Health Week, Mental Health Week, R U OK Day, International Friendships Day, plus more to come.

Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk celebrated their 2nd Birthday in November 2022. Angela is proud of the group’s success in this time.

“We have enjoyed our women coming together in support of all thing’s health; socially, mentally, and physically to connect. We believe having a strong support system helps support people to overcome challenges and maintain a state of mental well-being. Many ladies have now created lifelong friendships.

“We have also really loved how much the community has come together in support of us, especially the Penrith Men's Walk and Talk and all the kind-hearted local sponsors in our local area. We are so excited for all of our upcoming events and all the new connections women in our community can make” she ended.

Riding for the Disabled

Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains have been operating in Blaxland for the past 32 years.

The organisation provides a unique service for disabled children and adults in the community, using horses as a therapy tool. Participants connect with the horse, while taking part in fun activities/riding skills that have great mental and physical benefits. Their Centre is the only RDA in the Blue Mountains, serving the local area, Western Sydney and across the mountains as far as Lithgow.

They have Riding Therapy Classes and Horse Skills Sessions on Thursdays and Saturdays during the school term. During school holiday periods, they have individual and group sessions of Stable Management and Horse Skills for children with disabilities.

“We are always in need of new volunteers and will train people who have no experience with horses or disabilities, but a keen interest in becoming involved at RDA. We also require volunteers who prefer to do fundraising, maintenance, and gardening at the Centre” explained Brenda of Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains.

Brenda enjoys being a part of the team at Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains.

“Riding for the Disabled is a great organisation to become involved with. Volunteers gain new friends, experience caring for our special horses and see firsthand the difference and joy it brings to children and adults with disabilities” she said.

“RDA Blue Mountains receive no funding from Council or Government, but rely upon volunteer fundraising, donations, or sponsorship of our horses. If anyone would like to make a donation or local business sponsor one of our horses, please email us and we will forward information” Brenda replied.

Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains is located at 72 St. John’s Road in Blaxland. They can be contacted on Facebook (Riding for the Disabled Blue Mountains), via email at rdabluemountains@gmail.com or by phone on 02 4739 6829. Former Caroline Chisholm College student and mental health advocate Emily Smith has had the experience of a lifetime, presenting a speech at Parliament House.

Emily, who is a Youth Peer Worker with ReachOut, gave a speech advocating for the needs of young people’s mental health and presented the new service at ReachOut alongside their CEO, Youth ambassadors and Ian Thorpe.

“Having a stutter, I was always scared of public speaking. As you can imagine I was nervous to be speaking at Parliament House!

“However, speaking at Parliament House in December last year was an incredible experience. I was so privileged to be able to use my voice to spread awareness around mental health challenges and to present on ReachOut’s new service PeerChat” Emily explained to the Glenmore Gazette.

“After the event, I spoke with many of the politicians and sector partners who attended the event. I also attended meetings alongside my ReachOut colleagues to chat with politicians more in-depth about our new service and explain the need it is helping to fill. To this day I still can’t believe I was given the opportunity” she continued.

Emily has been a mental health advocate for the past six years, since she was in Year 11 in high school. She has worked as a Youth Peer Worker for just over four years.

“When I was first exploring what I could do to make a difference in the mental health sector, I never knew that peer workers even existed! It wasn’t until I was volunteering at my local youth mental health service that I heard they were looking for a peer worker.

“Over the years, I have struggled with my mental health. Some of the things I experienced included anxiety and disordered eating which led to me seeking professional support” Emily reflected.

“What inspired me to take on the role was having had my own journey of mental health and having had friends who also had their own mental health challenges. I could see that there was a need for more awareness to be spread about mental health so young people felt that it was okay to talk about how they were feeling and seek support” she recounted.

She is passionate about helping others and making a difference.

“I am really passionate about being able to support others and raise more awareness about the mental health challenges young people experience. I love that I have a career where I actively make a difference by sharing my story to help break down the stigma and also advocate for change” ended Emily.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

Peachtree hotel

54 Peachtree rd, Penrith NSW 2750

Lunch at the Peachtree Hotel with Kylie, Katie and I was superb.

When we arrived, we were deciding on a few different options to try and settled on a share plate of cheeseburger spring rolls to begin with. The cheeseburger spring rolls were exceptional and full of flavour. The rolls were crisp, not drowned in oil and actually tasted like a cheeseburger. The rolls contained meat, some mustard, pickle, and cheese along with other ingredients.

The second choice we decided on for lunch was the Sea Breeze Plate. This share plate is made for two people, however, we wanted to share it among the three of us and I am glad we did. The Sea Breeze Plate consisted of dill and lemon battered blue eye whiting, grilled scallops, salt, and pepper squid, grilled crispy skinned barramundi, smoked salmon, garden salad, chips, dipping sauces and smoky BBQ sauces. This Sea Breeze Plate was amazing. The grilled scallops were presented in a shell which was round, and these scallops had a smooth texture. When you bit into the scallops, the flavour was immediately noticeable and wasn’t too strong. The sauce on the scallops had a slight lemon taste and the sauce gave extra flavour to the scallops. Without the sauce, the scallops would have been dry. I was impressed with the garden salad, along with the dressing and for something a little different I placed some smoked salmon on top of the salad. The salmon and salad together made your taste buds sing and this salad was one of the best salads I have tasted in a very long time. I really enjoyed the salt and pepper squid and the grilled barramundi.

The experience today was exceptional, and the staff looked after Kylie, Katie and I.

Glenmore Park Realty have achieved a residential property record sale in the suburb recently.

The property, located on Mandalong Terrace, was sold for $2,500,000 on 23rd January this year. This is a record price for Glenmore Park.

The architecturally designed and master built home has 5 bedrooms, 3 with ensuites and the master with a spa bath.

Other features include a sweeping marble and wrought iron stair case, sunken formal lounge, dining, family, upper level relaxed living, cocktail bar and lounge and home office.

On the lower level, there is a huge completely self-contained studio including large living room, kitchen with granite bench tops and ensuite to the oversized bedroom. The marble has been imported from Italy and has been placed extensively throughout the home.

The home is spread over three levels, sunken formal lounge through beautiful sliding French doors to find a marble fire place and turret ceiling. It is complete with six bathrooms, three with spa baths.

A spacious balcony overlooking the large in-ground swimming pool has stunning views of the Blue Mountains. Finished off is a large front door hand crafted on site.

“We had a grand opening with a pianist, champagne, and canapés. The owners were fantastic to work with and you can really see every detail they put into this home. A big congratulations to them as well as the purchasers, who are both lovely families” said Belinda Watts of Glenmore Park Realty.

A Love of Woodcraft

Glenmore Park resident Steve Gault is a talented woodcrafter, who has been creating his amazing works for over a decade.

“I would say that I have been involved with woodcraft most of my life in different forms, but I have been scroll sawing for about 11 years” Steve said to the Glenmore Gazette.

A scroll saw is an electric or pedaloperated saw that is used to cut intricate curves in materials such as wood and metal. The fineness of the blade allows the cut to be more delicate, compared to a jigsaw or handsaw.

“I began with furniture, but due to my vision impairment, I am no longer able to do this. So, I now focus solely on scroll sawing” he explained.

“I really like scroll sawing puzzles and names. My current favourite project is the dog breed signs” Steve added.

Some of his other projects have included wooden clocks, and wedding/ anniversary boxes.

Steve’s work has enabled him to showcase his talents through various wood crafting competitions and exhibitions.

“I regularly enter my work into competitions within the scroll saw network. I have also entered into local shows such as the Penrith Show and Blacktown Show” he replied.

What does he enjoy most about woodcraft?

“I enjoy the challenge of tackling a particularly complicated piece. I enjoy the social aspect. I have met many friends within the various clubs. I also enjoy gifting my pieces to my friends and family and the joy it brings them” Steve smiled.

To see his projects or enquire about custom pieces on social media, search ‘Steven Gault Woodcraft’ on Facebook.

Sydney’s Next Great Parklands To Be Established In Western Sydney

A landmark $65 million investment, made possible by the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government’s $5 billion WestInvest Program, will transform the former private Fernhill Estate in Mulgoa into a 423 hectare public park.

The new expansive parklands will support the growth of the new Western Sydney Aerotropolis and will feature a network of paths and walking trails that will connect to the wider Mulgoa Valley, Penrith region and Blue Mountains National Park.

Premier Dominic Perrottet said this investment will secure, protect and enhance critical green space establishing a major new parkland for the people of Western Sydney – one of the youngest, fastest-growing and most diverse populations in the nation.

“We launched WestInvest to secure the best quality of life for families and make West and South West Sydney even better places to live and that is exactly what this project will do,” Mr Perrottet said.

“Parks and public spaces like this are Western Sydney’s answer to Centennial Park and Hyde Park in the east, a generational investment to leave a legacy of beautiful public spaces.

“Investments like this are only possible because of the NSW Liberal and Nationals economic plan for the future.”

The Greater Sydney Parklands will transform the former private property into an accessible public park showcasing the area’s great natural and cultural beauty. This will include:

• New and upgraded park entries for safe vehicle access into the Estate;

• A new estate drive and pedestrian promenade to allow people to walk to Fernhill House from key recreational areas;

• A network of pedestrian paths and walking trails connecting to the wider Mulgoa Valley, Penrith region and Blue Mountains National Park;

• 300m boardwalk around the Northern Dam and access for kayaks and small non-motorised watercraft;

• 1km arc of Indigenous planting in the shape of a lyrebird feather;

• A new nature-based playground and drop-off/pick-up zone for neighbouring Mulgoa Public School;

• Bush revegetation and new interpretative and wayfinding signage.

Treasurer Matt Kean said WestInvest is creating world-class public spaces for the growing Western Sydney population to enjoy now and into the future for exercise, excitement and relaxation.

“When we launched WestInvest, we asked Western Sydney residents what infrastructure projects would change their local areas for the better,” Mr Kean said.

“The huge majority of responses said they wanted new and improved open and green space and the opportunity to explore nature through walking and cycling tracks.

“Our WestInvest projects provide something for everyone from adventurers, to young families, to those who simply want to sit back and enjoy nature.”

Minister for Infrastructure, Cities and Active Transport Rob Stokes said the funding would ensure the Western Parkland City lives up to its name.

“We’re putting the park in the heart of the parkland city. Eastern Sydney has its harbour and beaches, Parramatta has its rivers and creeks, and Western Sydney will be defined by freshwater lakes and verdant parklands,” Mr Stokes said.

“WestInvest quite literally uses a motorway to fund a greenway, delivering a legacy of parks, paths and playgrounds for Western Sydney families to enjoy.

“It wasn’t that long ago that the public were almost locked out of Fernhill Estate forever and now it’s going to be completely transformed into one of Sydney’s most-cherished public spaces.”

Fernhill Estate was purchased by the NSW Government in 2018. The upgrades and improvements as part of this investment will take place over the next five years as part of The Foundation Plan of Management to 2026.

Harmony Week: Supporting Kids to Understand & Accept Diversity

Australia is home to one of the oldest continuous cultures, as well as Australians who identify with over 270 ancestries. Our cultural diversity is one of our strengths and an important source of national identity. However, racism remains a destructive force in Australian society. Research shows that social attitudes first take root in early childhood. Children learn prejudice from the grown-ups around them in the same way that they develop language.

Children learn the most by observing the behaviour of adults around them. Children listen carefully to how parents and caregivers speak about different groups in society and may adopt similar attitudes accordingly. Likewise, observing how parents and caregivers interact with different members of society teaches children how to behave around people who are different to them. Parents and caregivers who model kind words and actions set a valuable example for children to follow.

It is important to respond to children’s questions with matter of fact and age-appropriate explanations. Young children are naturally curious and often notice physical differences between people early on. For example, a child may notice that another child at her day care has a darker skin tone and asks you about this. An appropriate response might be, “some people have different skin colour and different eye colour and different hair colour.”

When discussing differences between people, point out and highlight the similarities as well. You can talk about how even though people look different, we all have similar feelings. Encourage children to seek out common interests or likes/ dislikes with children who might appear different to them. Sharing something in common, no matter how small, can bring different groups together.

Join in multicultural family events and experiences to learn more about the different cultural or religious groups in your community. Find out how your child’s school or early education centre is celebrating Harmony Week. For details on community events for the whole family, see harmony.gov.au.

As parents and caregivers, you can play an important role in helping children understand, respect, and appreciate cultural diversity.

Students at the brand new Nangamay Public School in Glenmore Park began the school year in style, with the $40 million new school project opening. Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell and Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies were at the school to officially open the new facilities recently.

The new school accommodates up to 420 students from Kindergarten to Year 6, and includes 20 flexible, air-conditioned learning spaces, a library, canteen, and staff administration spaces, as well as a multipurpose hall and sports and play space. While the students enjoy learning and playing in their wonderful new school the final landscaping and play space will be completed in Term 1.

Mrs Davies said it was an exciting day for students and teachers starting the first day of the school year in their brand new classrooms.

“It is a pleasure to see Nangamay Public School open. The students and teachers already look so at home and their new classrooms look amazing. It will be a fantastic place to learn,”

“This investment will support families and students in this area for generations to come,

“It’s the Liberal and Nationals Government that is delivering vital infrastructure for our local community” Mrs Davies said.

Ms Mitchell said she was thrilled to see students with smiles on their faces starting their year with enthusiasm in their new state-of-the-art facilities.

“We want students to come to school excited to engage in learning, and the new facilities at Nangamay Public School will provide a learning environment that inspires that and more,” Ms Mitchell said.

“It is a fantastic start to the year to see students settling into the schools we have worked so hard to deliver. This year the NSW Government will continue to work hard to deliver the very best for our students.”

The NSW Government is investing $8.6 billion in school infrastructure over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver 160 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This builds on the more than $9.1 billion invested in projects delivered since 2017, a program of $17.7 billion in public education infrastructure.

Mulgoa’s 2022 HSC Cohort Celebrate Hard Work and Achievement

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, recently held a morning tea to celebrate the hard work and dedication of Mulgoa’s best and brightest – the 2022 Higher School Certificate (HSC) distinguished achievers.

“To attain an HSC mark of 90 or above in a course of study is an outstanding achievement that demonstrates an incredible work ethic and commitment to study,” Tanya Davies said.

131 students in schools across the Mulgoa electorate achieved the status of distinguished achiever, according to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).

The schools that produced distinguished achievers include Al-Faisal College, Caroline Chisholm College, Cecil Hills High School, Christadelphian Heritage College Sydney, Emmaus Catholic College, Erskine Park High School, Glenmore Park High School, Irfan College, Mamre Anglican School, Nepean Christian School, Penrith Anglican College, St Narsai Assyrian Christian College, and Thomas Hassall Anglican College.

“With over 131 students attaining distinguished achiever status, I would like to acknowledge the dedication and input of teachers, parents and carers that assisted these students,” said Tanya Davies.

The principals, staff and teachers at those schools should feel incredibly proud of not only their students but also themselves. Tanya Davies said she cannot imagine the challenges these students have endured over the past two years with the implementing online learning in the face of lockdowns.

“I am confident that as learners they will achieve and accomplish much if they continue to persist in working hard and striving to reach their goals.”

At the morning tea, Mrs Davies had the privilege of engaging with the students, offering her support for all their endeavours, and encouraging them to seize every opportunity presented to them.

Tahlia Tupaea Returns to Home Club

In their inaugural NBL1 East season, the Penrith Panthers have signed WNBL veteran and Penrith local talent Tahlia Tupaea for the 2023 NBL1 season.

Making her WNBL debut at only 15 years old, Glenmore Park’s Tupaea has played in the WNBL since 2012 with the Sydney Flames (Sydney Uni Flames and Sparks) and UC Capitals.

The 2017 WNBL champion and WNBA draft pick with the Minnesota Lynx was most recently with the UC Capitals, before being granted personal leave from the team.

She was most recently the Most Valuable Player of the Tauihi Basketball Aotearoa (New Zealand’s women’s semi-professional league). Where she averaged 18.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.7 steals per game.

As one of the WNBL’s sharpshooters, where she averaged 44% from the arc throughout 21/22 WNBL season, coach Kristen Veal spoke highly of her unique skill set prior to this current WNBL season.

Glenmore Park Cricket Club have taken part in Pink Stumps Day, in aid of the McGrath Foundation, last month.

On Saturday 18th February, with all their games across the Penrith District, teams from the local club were encouraged to come with the colour pink as a sign of support for the great work that the McGrath Foundation is doing in the community.

The club’s fundraising activities for the charity event included selling the Foundation’s merchandise (hats, bandanas, shirts, pink grips and stubby holders), holding morning teas at their games and making donations. A special fundraising page has also been set up.

“Pink Stumps Day is a great way for the local community to show its support with the McGrath Foundation. The Foundation support communities with funding for McGrath Breast Care Nurses, who provide invaluable support and care to women and men experiencing breast cancer” explained Katrina Wild of Glenmore Park Cricket Club.

The McGrath Foundation currently funds 193 McGrath Breast Care Nurses, across Australia, who have provided care and support to over 118,000 families since 2005.

Their goal is to fund 250 Breast Care Nurses by 2025.

The local community can still get behind Glenmore Park Cricket Club in their support of the important charity event.

“You can get involved by making a donation to the McGrath Foundation Pink Stumps Day Glenmore Park Cricket Club page. Thank you so much to everyone for their support” Katrina said. Details can be found at: https://www.pinkisthecolour.com. au/fundraisers/GPCRICKET/pink-stumps.

“There’s no point guard like her in Australia, with her size, her strength, her skillset, her shot and how she reads and see the game, so I’d like to see her take a bit more of a leadership role on and off the court this year,” Veal said.

“I think it’s her time to step into a little bit more responsibility, little bit more leadership and I think she’s ready for that and she wants it, which is the sign of an elite mindset and a talented basketball player”.

Having previously played for the Panthers in Waratah League (now NBL1 East), Tupaea now returns to her junior club as they make their NBL1 debut starting on March 11.

Men Charged Following Alleged Armed Robbery – Glenmore Park

Two men appeared in court (last month) charged following an armed robbery in Sydney’s west.

About 2.10pm (Thursday 26 January 2023), emergency services were called to a shopping centre on Town Terrace at Glenmore Park, after reports of an armed robbery.

Police were told that two men entered a tobacconist and allegedly threatened the employee with a firearm, before stealing several packets of cigarettes and cash.

A 56-year-old woman nearby noticed the men’s vehicle parked outside and removed the keys from the ignition.

Several witnesses intervened and were able to hold down the men at the scene until police arrived.

The men, aged 27 and 30, were arrested by officers and taken to hospital under police guard for treatment of minor injuries. Officers from Nepean Police Area Command established a crime scene and seized a firearm for further examination. An investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident commenced.

Upon release from hospital, the men were taken to Penrith Police Station, where they were both charged with in company rob while armed with dangerous weapon.

They were refused bail and appeared before Penrith Local Court on Friday 27 January 2023.

Can Simple Stretching Improve Your Cardiovascular Health?

Facilitated stretching is a part of almost every session of MET at our clinic. Stretching may reduce cardiovascular risk. In a 2017, study by Shinno etal. healthy women over 40yo were asked to stretch 3 times per week, for 3 or 6 months. They conducted 20-30 second static stretches of 15 muscle groups: trapezius, arm-flexors, deltoids, triceps, upper-back muscles (trapezius/ rhomboids), pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, gastrocnemius, soleus, hip abductors, hip adductors, quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteus maximus, and lower erector spinae. Stretching intensity was participant-rated as “somewhat-heavy” to “heavy”.

To see whether the stretching routine had any long-term effects on blood vessels flexibility (compliance), researchers measured an index called RH-PAT both before and after 3 or 6 months of stretching. RH-PAT is determined by:

1. measuring normal arterial blood flow in the forearm, then

2. inflating an upper-arm cuff to stop blood flow for 5 minutes, then

3. releasing the cuff and measuring blood flow 1 min after cuff release.

4. Calculating the ratio of arm blood flow before cuffing and 1 min after cuff-release

5. This gives a ratio called the “reactive hyperaemia peripheral artery tonometry (RH-PAT) index”

RH-PAT is a “powerful predictor of all cause and cardiovascular morbidity and mortality”. It can predict:

1. endothelial (blood vessel lining cell) dysfunction

2. coronary artery disease & atherosclerosis

3. microvascular dysfunction following sepsis

4. coronary plaque formation

The arteries of healthy people are flexible/dilatable and have a higher HR-PAT index; people with cardiovascular diseases have a low HR-PAT index because their arteries have difficulty dilating.

So, how did regular stretching effect participants artery’s ability to dilate (health)?

a. all study participants had an RH-PAT index below 1.67 at the start of the study

b. both 3 and 6 months of stretching improved RH-PAT index significantly

c. a further 6-months of no-stretching saw RH-PAT index return to pre-intervention values

These results suggest regular stretching can increase the compliance (flexibility) of arteries, reducing cardiovascular risk, and that regular stretching may lead to health benefits beyond increased muscle-flexibility. Importantly, once women stopped stretching, accrued cardiovascular benefits were slowly lost over the following 6 months. So, the old imperative idiom of ‘use it or lose it’ certainly applies to the cardiovascular benefits of stretching too.

Diabetes & Your Feet

Diabetes occurs when the body is unable to maintain healthy levels of sugar in the blood. This can potentially cause serious issues, such as:

• nerve damage (neuropathy)

• reduced blood supply

• nail and skin issues

• wounds, ulcers & gangrene

• foot deformity

Foot complications can be avoided by taking precautions and acting immediately when problems arise*.

1) Inspect Feet Regularly

Look for cuts, scratches, and bruises, and ensure they heal well. Check for signs of infection (redness, swelling, pus, pain, wound worsening.)

2) Wear properly fitted footwear

Footwear should not crowd the toes, rub or slip. They should fasten to hold your foot in place, and must be supportive.

3) Inspect Footwear Regularly

Replace worn out shoes. Check inside for foreign objects like rocks.

4) Avoid Being Barefoot

Protect feet from injury by wearing shoes. Beware of walking on hot surfaces barefoot, particularly at the beach.

5) Avoid Direct Heat Sources

You can also accidentally cook your feet by putting them close to a heater to warm up. Extra layers of clothing or blankets are much safer.

6) Dry Between Toes

Wet skin between toes can macerate and break down. If you can’t reach your feet, use an air dryer or a drying spray like deodorant, antifungal spray or methylated spirits.

7) Moisturise Feet

Moisturiser will slow the process of hard skin formation, reducing painful fissuring and cracking that can be an infection risk. If you can’t reach your feet, use a long-handled sponge applicator.

8) Get Some Exercise

Exercise is the best way to keep the blood flowing to your feet.

9) Stay Hydrated

Remember to drink water!

10) Manage Diabetes

Keeping blood sugar levels under control is essential to avoiding foot complications.

11) See Your Podiatrist If You Have Diabetes

We recommend a thorough foot check at least once a year to assess the risk to your foot health and develop risk minimisation strategies.

ULH Glenmore Park has Grand Opening

The tenth agency to open within the Urban Land & Housing network is far more than just another office – it’s a deeply personal milestone for CEO Chris Lowry and his locally grown team. When Glenmore Park officially opened its doors recently, it was attended by many local businesses and dignitaries, with a special appearance by the Deputy Mayor of Penrith City Council, Clr. Todd Carney.

Thirty years ago, at the young age of just 15, Chris worked weekends with his father setting up the first developments and home subdivisions in the area. From his initiation with the very first display home in the middle of a paddock, both he and the business have gone on to develop, market and sell what are now well-established communities throughout the Glenmore Park area. These include the iconic Sunland development, Mulgoa Sanctuary and Claremont Meadows.

The Glenmore Park team are all passionate locals born and bred and many are raising families of their own here. For them, like Chris, the community is integral to their lives, and they’re connected through schools, sporting clubs and other local groups.

By covering the Central West, the new agency is effectively a bridge between ULH’s other offices throughout Sydney’s Southwest and Northwest regions. In many ways it’s the shining star in what has been a long-held dream for Mr Lowry. He likes to call it ‘paddock to property management’. It represents his early vision to expand the Sydney Metro area and provide homes to young families, thereby creating a long-term solution to their real estate needs as they prosper and grow. His ambition was to be their chosen real estate services business for life, delivering home and land packages right through to resale and investor property management services.

Even more important was Chris’s belief that the outlying suburbs of Sydney deserve a better quality of property services. The Glenmore Park office is a state-of-the-art, architect-designed facility offering best-of-breed technology. The people have all been hand-chosen for their local experience, knowledge, and passion for the community and all it offers, with ULH priding itself on bringing together a well-trained, values-driven group of professionals.

“The launch of our newest and most technologically advanced office is incredibly exciting. Glenmore Park represents our tenth office in the network and the next stage in the realisation of a dream that started 30 years ago. We have long believed that the communities we serve are crying out for highly innovative, professionally capable and integrity rich real estate services. The support and encouragement we have received from our community is both incredibly fulfilling and humbling at the same time.

“Our Glenmore Park team is highly experienced and motivated to serve the region. As a business we’re blessed by the quality, knowledge and values our people bring and we look forward to delivering outstanding outcomes for local families and investors alike.”

The Importance of Desexing your Cat

It has been calculated that, in just seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce as many as 420,000 kittens. This is a major problem and highlights the importance of desexing male and female cats at an early age to reduce the number of unwanted animals in our community.

In addition to preventing unwanted litters, desexing may result in a positive behavioural change in your cat. Desexing may also minimise the chance of your cat developing reproductive organ-related health issues that can threaten your cat's life.

A desexed cat (male or female) are less likely to

• Wander or run away. Desexed cats generally have a reduced inclination to roam, which means they are less likely to roam off your property and reduces the risk of traffic accidents. It also increases the likelihood that your desexed cat will adapt better to a live indoors.

• Become involved in fights over territory or mating partners. This reduces the likelihood of injuries such as abscesses and infected wounds which may be fatal.

• Contract Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Also known as Feline AIDS, this can be contracted through fighting with other infected cats.

• Develop tumours such as uterine, ovarian and mammary (breast) cancer in females and possibly testicular cancer in

males.

• Display anti-social behaviour towards people or other animals. This makes pet ownership less enjoyable and disrupts the human-pet bond.

• Spray or mark its territory, which is usually in the house.

A cat can have an average of 4–6 kittens per litter. Each kitten must be fed, wormed, and treated for fleas. It is also a legal requirement that each kitten be vaccinated and microchipped before they are sold or given away. These costs can add up, making desexing a much easier and less expensive option.

The appropriate age for desexing can vary depending on the breed and size of your cat. Generally, it is best done before puberty (approximately six months of age) although the operation can be done at a later age. Local Council regulations require cats to be desexed by four months of age unless a letter of exemption is supplied by the treating veterinarian.

If you would like more information about desexing, microchipping or registration of your cat phone and chat with our friendly team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on 0247 362 027.

Play It Safe

Senior citizens have been identified as the most vulnerable to fire danger according to the latest statistics released by Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW).

FRNSW research shows that those over 65 have accounted for 50% of all fire fatalities in New South Wales over the past five years.

To address the trend, FRNSW is promoting its Safety Visit program, designed to educate the community about common household fire dangers.

The program involves firefighters helping residents to create an escape plan at home, stressing the importance of keeping a key in any deadlock to assist in an urgent exit.

Firefighters insist early warning is crucial to any fire response, so smoke alarms need to be checked regularly to make sure that they are in working order.

Under the program, FRNSW is offering Seniors and the rest of the community the option of booking a free Safety Visit.

Firefighters will come to your home and carry out a fire risk inspection, installing a free smoke alarm where necessary.

The public can book a Safety Visit through the FRNSW website: https://www.fire.nsw. gov.au/page.php?id=9316

FRNSW Community Safety Co-ordinator, Station Officer Andrew Walker, said it’s important to remind Seniors about these key messages:

“New South Wales Seniors Week was a great time to remind the elderly to make sure they have created a safe environment at home.”

“Our firefighters used the week to visit homes and have a conversation around safety measures, making sure that smoke alarms are in good working order.”

“Our Safety Visit program is a crucial part of the educational process and making sure that Seniors and other vulnerable members of the community especially are equipped to respond quickly to any emergency.”

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga

P: 4733 1635 A: 16 William Howell Drive, Glenmore Park W: www. gracewest.church Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30am, 10.30am and 6pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

When I was a young teenager, I used to pick on my younger brother. I mean really pick on him. I suppose it was easy entertainment. He was three years younger, and it wasn’t a fair situation for him to be in. It had just become the pattern of our relationship and I wasn’t at all concerned about, but it wasn’t right.

One holidays, we were staying at my grandmother’s farm, and she saw what I was doing first-hand. She was a passionate follower of Jesus and wanted us to be shaped by Him as well. Over the dinner table, when it was just the two of us, she challenged me about how I was treating my brother. I respected my grandma and the words hit home hard. From that day on, I decided to act differently and have only ever tried to be kind towards my brother. I can thank my grandmother for that!

There are always times in life that we need someone to challenge us, to reshape us and point us in the direction we should be going. It gets harder the older you get. It is easy to be even more stuck in your ways and even less likely to have people who will challenge you. Do you have someone in your life who will challenge you? Can you be that person for someone else? The Bible teaches us in the book of Ecclesiastes that: “it is better to heed the rebuke of a wise person than to listen to the song of fools.” (Ecclesiastes 7:5).

Community Groups

March is the month of International Women’s Day. Taking place on Wednesday 8th March, it’s a time to celebrate the social, political, and economic achievements of women around the world.

Community events are in full swing and are the perfect opportunity to get together with your family and friends.

The 2023 New South Wales State Election will be held on Saturday 25th March. A day to exercise your right to vote and enjoy a democracy sausage whilst you’re at it!

Keep continuing to support the local, small businesses you see in the District Gazette. They really are the lifeblood of our community.

Enjoy the stories of those who inspire our lives each and every day. It’s just as compelling for us to write about them as it is to read.

‘Take a chance, because you’ll never know how absolutely great something can turn out to be’.
