Camille Nominated to be the New Bondi Vet There is some exciting news in the local community with Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital’s Owner and Veterinarian, Dr Camille Brandt, being nominated to be the next Bondi Vet recently by her clients. The popular Veterinarian’s video application to be the next Bondi Vet is now on the Bondi Vet website (www.bondivet.com. au) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/bondivetofficial). It can also be viewed on Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital’s new Facebook page (www.facebook.com/orchardhillsvethospital). To get behind and support Dr Brandt, the local community can ‘like’ her application video on the Bondi Vet website or add a message to the Bondi Vet website or Facebook page. Dr Brandt, who has been practicing for 16 years and estimates to have seen over 40,000 patients, has already received support for her nomination, “There are heaps of lovely messages from my clients on the Bondi Vet website about the application video. I can work out who they are from the photos of their pets and their manner of writing. It is so rewarding to wear your heart on your sleeve, have your clients recognise this and repay you with their lovely messages” she said. Dr Brandt’s love of animals also extends to her own furry friends, Dr Camille Brandt (left) with Dr Chris Brown, the original Bondi Vet (right) | Image Supplied

Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres and Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies inspected brand new sporting facilities at Mulgoa Rise set to benefit thousands of local players. “Local teams and spectators alike will benefit from this massive $200,000 NSW Government investment to build a store room facility as part of a range of new upgrades to fields, lighting and the amenity block at Mulgoa Rise,â€? Mr Ayres said. “With the population of Penrith forecast to grow to more than 256,000 people by 2036, improving facilities at a local level will help to increase participation across a range of sports including football, rugby and cricket. “The booming popularity of the Glenmore Park Football Club, now with over 1,200 members, has brought the community together for decades in Penrith, and now players of all ages will see the difference a boost in key infrastructure can make to play,â€? said Mr Ayres. “Importantly these new facilities highlight to the community the level of commitment and investment the NSW Government and Penrith City Council have in delivering for our city,â€? added Stuart Ayres. Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said the decision to upgrade fields, lighting, amenities and storage facilities would improve the experience for both spectators and players. “This grant has had a positive impact at a local level and these new facilities are state-of-the-art,â€? Ms Davies said. “The new facilities will be ready in time for the football season’s kick-off and players, referees, coaches and administrators of all ages and abilities are set to benefit from the upgrade. “With so many sporting clubs across Mulgoa run largely by volunteers, local sports grants help boost infrastructure, programs and services to increase on-going participation. FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

The Best Book To Read Not many of you will have heard of Voltaire. Voltaire was a French philosopher, historian and writer who lived in France in the 1700’s. Voltaire was also an atheist, that is, someone who didn’t believe in God. In fact, in a lot of his writing Voltaire was extremely critical of the Bible. At one time he made this very bold statement: “One hundred years from today the Bible will be a forgotten book.” Today, everyone has forgotten that quote! And while many people have never heard of Voltaire, the Bible continues to be among the best selling books of all time. Why? What is it about the Bible that makes it the most read, most published, most translated book in the world? And more importantly, the one book that transforms and deeply impacts the lives of those who apply what it says? What I find so encouraging is that at our Church as people read the Bible for themselves, as they take an honest look at what it says they are stunned by how relevant and by how practical it is. They are pleasantly surprised to find that the Bible “speaks” to them about the real issues of life. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church we would love for you to be able to experience the joy and wonder of what the Bible has to say. Starting Sunday 14th May in our Sunday Sermon Series as well as in many of our weekly groups we will be exploring what the Bible is about, what are the big themes and how it applies to

Mother's Day Second Sunday In May

New Café for Glenmore Park The local community will welcome a new café this month, with Daily Break opening at Blue Hills Drive in Glenmore Park, with a grand opening on Saturday 6th May. New owner, Susan Keith, has been a resident in Glenmore Park for 18 years and currently runs a successful personal training business. “My passion to help people and give great service has always been a priority. Before running my personal training business, I was in the hospitality industry for 8 years. So, I’m going back to one of my first passions and to bring that enthusiasm and passion into the café” she said. Susan’s inspiration to purchase the café came from living in the local area and seeing the potential the café has to create a great place for families to come and enjoy good quality food with a great atmosphere. With Susan taking ownership on 1st May, the café (formerly Sapphires Café) will close for a few days to undergo a revamp, until the grand opening. The café not only has a new name, Daily Break, but also promises a new look thanks to a different colour décor and interior, wider range of food to please everyone, an ice cream bar serving scoops of Norgen Vaaz and with some new staff. Daily Break will be available to take a variety of parties and events, with kids parties sure to be a hit. “My goal for the business is being committed to the community and offering the best quality food and coffee. We will strive to treat our customers respectfully with a service that is prompt, efficient, friendly and relaxed” explained Susan. “I’m looking forward to seeing the many smiles on the faces of the community when they have visited the café and had a great experience”. Daily Break is now taking Mother’s Day bookings. For more information, call 0425 213279 or search for them on Facebook. Owner Susan Keith serving coffee | Image Supplied

FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School

Why Are We Soooo Busy? I constantly hear people saying, “I can’t believe how busy it is…there just isn’t time to stop!” Now, I have a big tribe of young kids and this brings its own busyness. At times though, I wonder whether our family’s constant zipping around to this basketball commitment or that dance rehearsal has more to do with our fear as parents that our kids will miss out somehow - it is fuelled by our own need for them to be the best. When we were their age we were probably using our imagination playing in the backyard with friends from the neighbourhood, and this didn’t stop Olympians, heart surgeons or movie stars from emerging. So what happened to our neighbourhoods? Our society also seems to have invented the idea that if you are busy you are important. And “busy” doesn’t mean busy raising children well or helping others who are disadvantaged (such things are not highly valued at the end of the day – not enough to spend our time on). No. “Busy” mainly means busy earning money because we have deified economic prosperity. Because of it we are willing to chalk up one of the highest working hours of any nation in the world. We have been sucked in by our own success as a nation and believe that if we can earn enough money (what is “enough” never seems to be defined, so we just keep trying to earn “more”) everything will be okay. In the Bible Jesus models another way. He prayed on a secluded mountainside before the day started to connect with God’s love for him - the truth God cares about us, has a sacred and wonderful life planned out for each of us, is in control, and is working to unfold the best life we can live on earth. With this in sight Jesus still had things to do but didn’t need to be busy to be important or to control his future, and was free to spend each day on what truly matters. Live life well, Paul

A Forever Home For Our Most Vulnerable Children In Mulgoa The NSW Government has announced that it will deliver internationally tested preventative and diversionary programs, as well as making it easier for foster carers to adopt children in their care, under the most significant reforms to child protection and out of home care in almost a decade. Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Minister for Family and Community Services Pru Goward and Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP have announced that a range of non-government agencies will deliver internationally tested preventative and diversionary programs, Multi Systemic Therapy Child Abuse and Neglect (MST-CAN) and Family Functioning Therapy Child Welfare (FFTCW), to work with families where there has been physical abuse or neglect. The Government will invest $90 million into the two programs over four years, delivering support to 900 children per year. The family preservation and restoration models will be delivered by non-government organisations in 15 priority locations, two of which are Penrith (provided by Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Centre) and Fairfield (provided by Uniting). Ms Goward said that these reforms will bring together government agencies and non-government organisations to work with the community to provide improved support for children and families at their most vulnerable. “Children in, or at risk of entering out of home care, will also be receiving a coordinated package of support based on their needs, ensuring that we, as a Government, are meeting children’s needs and empowering them to reach their full potential,” Ms Goward said. A means-tested adoption allowance was also announced by the Premier and Minister Goward which will help families progress to adopting the child in their care. “We are committed to supporting families to stay safely together, but when that is not possible we need to ensure children have a safe home for life,” Ms Berejiklian said. Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP welcomed the announcement. “This is a game-changer. Our community will benefit from this initiative, and that’s a very positive thing for our local area”, Tanya Davies said.

Exciting Redevelopment Updates For The Local Community

With development progress well and truly underway, it’s the perfect opportunity to update our local community. Coles State General Manager, Thinus Keeve, said Coles was delighted to be developing a new supermarket at Glenmore Park to offer a convenient shopping experience to local residents. “We are excited to be opening a new supermarket later this year at Glenmore Park, which will employ around 100 team members in the community and feature an extensive range of products at great value to meet the needs of local shoppers,” he said. Glenmore Park shoppers can also look forward to ALDI’s award-winning products and exciting bi-weekly Special Buys, as well as fresh fruit, vegetables and bread delivered daily. ALDI Glenmore Park will also be supported by a team of 15-20

permanent full and part-time employees, providing rewarding career opportunities in the local community. An exciting restaurant precinct, overlooking the park, includes a mix of international flavours of Italian, Mexican and Asian dining experiences. Our food court will also offer casual dining options such as a Sushi Train, Soul Origin, and sit down cafes such as The Coffee Club and Coffee Emporium. Another feature of the new building includes a national carwash operator, conveniently located in the carpark, which will enhance the shopping experience. Medi Advice Pharmacy will be relocating to our new building, to a larger premise, which will give consumers greater product choice. Additional retailers to be excited about also include a Plus Fitness Gym with 24hr access for customers. With a vast range of general retail and services, a large variety retailer offering shoppers discounted goods from homewares to party supplies. Travel and Communications services will also be available, to meet with market needs. There are still some fantastic key franchise opportunities still available for retailers such as Wraps, Gozleme along with services such as florists and general merchandise. Facilities of the new building will also include over 350 undercover car spaces, amenities, travellators and consumer lifts, all perfectly positioned to provide a pleasurable shopping experience. Glenmore Park Town Centre is located at 1-11 Town Terrace, Glenmore Park. Further information can be found on Glenmore Park Town Centre’s Facebook page. Artists Impression | Image Supplied

Peer Pressure It used to be something that we worried about with teens. But it seems that younger children need to learn how to deal with peer pressure these days. There is a lot of peer conflict in primary school and sometimes kids get caught up in stuff that they didn’t really anticipate and know how to manage. For example, a child thinks it would be a good idea to hide someone else’s lunch bag. Maybe just for a laugh, to annoy that kid, or to make him angry. This is a simple example. It seems like a bit of a lark. But it also may be one act in a stream of events targeting one particular child, in which case it would be bullying. The protagonist gets other kids involved in the scheme. Some of those kids may think it’s a good idea, but some might not and they don’t know how to say ‘no’ without fear of ridicule or losing the friendship. Peer pressure is when your friends or other kids your age try to get you to do something that you don’t want to do. It is very hard to say ‘no’ to your friends, and it sometimes takes a lot of courage. The steps in dealing with peer pressure are: 1. Calm down, using calming down strategies (belly breathing, talking ourselves through it, counting backwards, thinking calming thoughts); 2. Think the problem through; 3. Be cool, calm, and confident, and use an “I statement’ to let the other people know what you think in a polite way; 4. Tell the other kids why you don’t think it’s a good idea; 5. Suggest something else to do for fun. This can be hard for kids to do. They may need some support from a trusted adult to help walk them through it. Kids also need to know who they can go to if the situation is dangerous or doesn’t stop. Image | www.pexels.com

Year 12 Caroline Chisholm Catholic College student Tara Dangerfield has had her stunning HSC Major Work selected to be part of Art Gallery of NSW‘s 2017 ArtExpress, the annual series of exhibitions of exemplary artworks created by New South Wales visual arts students for the Higher School Certificate. Inspired by her family, Tara wrote: “My Uncle was born with severe health issues surrounding his kidney, reflux nephropathy and nephritis leading to my Mother donating one of her functioning Kidneys ultimately saving his life.” Tara’s mum Alison became a living donor in 2003, when she selflessly and bravely gave one of her kidneys to her brother. Her generous act gave him the opportunity to live his life to the fullest with his career, sport, his son and his fiancé. Tara’s uncle and kidney recipient Paul Hudson in turn has given back to the transplantation community by volunteering his time to encourage others to join the Australian Organ Donor Register. In 2016 he was part of Transplant Australia’s Gifted campaign, which promoted organ donation to Australia’s multicultural communities. Paul said, “Feeling very proud of my niece Tara Dangerfield who had her year 12 Major Artwork displayed at ArtExpress representing Caroline Chisholm Catholic College. She made two ceramic vases which represented organ donation.” Tara explains, “I wanted my work to address the fragility of the human spirit in the midst of illness in relation to my family’s history of health issues.” The importance of projects like this in the community, and sharing personal experiences of organ and tissue donation with others, cannot be overstated. Thanks to families and people like Tara, Alison and Paul demonstrating the benefits of transplantation and inspiring Aussies to join the Register, more lives are being saved than ever before. According to the federal government, figures showed a bestever 1,448 Aussies were given a second chance at life in 2016 due to the generosity of 503 deceased organ donors. This is 16 per cent better than the previous year, and resulted in a 17 per cent lift in the number of lives saved. Still, there are over 1400 Aussies who need a life-saving transplant today. You can join the Australian Organ Donor Register online at donatelife.gov.au to register your decision to help others, and leave a legacy of life behind you. Tara (left) and her proud mum Alison (right) | Image + Article: transplant. org.au

WHAT’S COOKING

No-Bake Mixed Berry Pie

Ingredients 10 graham crackers ½ cup butter, melted 8 ounces cream cheese, softened ¼ cup maple syrup 1 cup blueberries 1 cup strawberries, sliced 4 tablespoons water 2 tablespoons lemon juice, about half a lemon ¼ cup sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch

m To Muox with x

Method 1. Place graham crackers in a plastic bag and crush them into fine crumbs using a rolling pin. Alternatively, a food processor can be used to crush the crackers. 2. Pour the graham cracker crumbs into a medium bowl with the melted butter. 3. Mix until the crumbs take on the character of a coarse, wet sand. 4. Pour the crumbs into a 9-inch pie dish. Press the crumb firmly into the dish, making sure to coat the bottom and sides of the dish evenly. Once the crust has been formed, place the pie dish into the refrigerator to firm up. 5. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together cream cheese and maple syrup. Once combined, pour the mixture into pie crust and return it to refrigerator to chill. 6. Meanwhile, add half of the blueberries and strawberries to a saucepan over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of water, lemon juice, and sugar. 7. Cook for 2-4 minutes or until sugar is dissolved and berries begin to expel their juice, creating a loose, deep-red mixture. 8. In a small bowl or ramekin, mix cornstarch and remaining 2 tablespoons of water into a smooth paste. Add the cornstarch mixture to the berries and cook for an additional 2 minutes, until the filling thickens. Remove from heat and set aside. 9. Allow the mixture to cool for 5 minutes. 10. Remove the chilled pie crust with the cream cheese layer from the refrigerator. Take the remaining blueberries and strawberries and evenly distribute them over the top of the cream cheese layer. 11. Next, pour the cooked berry mixture over the top of the fresh fruit and cream cheese, filling in the rest of the pie crust. Spread the filling evenly. 12. Chill the pie completely in the refrigerator for 1.5-2 hours before serving. 13. Enjoy! The local community is still a buzz, following the huge success that was both facilitated and hosted by Menu By The Park at the Glenmore Park Town Centre last month and set to make a return again in May. “It was great to see the community come together. The attendance far exceeded our expectations, with nearly 3,000 local residents turning up over the two nights. With three and a half weeks of planning and a soft launch, we are all so proud of how the event was embraced by the wonderful people” said Julio Amituanai, Event Organiser. Menu By The Park brought together fantastic street food of all cuisines through food truck vendors and stalls as well as live entertainment to entertain the masses. Some of the street food vendors on show to showcase their delicious menus included Chur Burger, Maverick Wings, El Taco Loco Mexican, Dino’s Pizza Glenmore Park and Torch Me Crème Brulee to name a just a few. “There was lots of food to choose from and my family had the best night” said local resident Michelle Fowler. Menu By The Park returns to the Glenmore Park Town Centre on Saturday 20th May, from 5pm to late and promises to be a great night out for the family. For more information, follow Menu By The Park on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Come and Grab a

Gourmet

Bite

Glenmore Park Town Centre’s newest business, Gourmet Bites, has already shown to be a popular place to grab a bite in just a few short weeks since renovating and opening their doors in March this year. Owners Ping and Kai Kong bring with them many years of experience in the food industry, after previously owning Orana in Kellyville, Seasoned Chickens in Balgowlah and Bobbin Head Chickens in Turramurra. “We really like the local area a lot. The people are warm and friendly and have been very nice. This is a great environment” said Ping Kong, Owner. Since the new management change, Gourmet Bites now offers catering for parties and functions. They have changed their chickens to a bigger size and are now free range (Lilydale). She Said She Could, So She Did! For many mums around Australia, the day to day activities of running a home can be hard work. Add to this those that work and, in particular, those who own and run successful businesses; and there you have the ingredients for a truly special person. This is certainly the case for Glenmore Park mum, Karlie Scharfenberg. Karlie started her business, The Loans Suite, in September last year, after working for 3 of the big 4 banks for over 17 years and a year at Mortgage Choice in Penrith. “I figured, why not give it a go and take a risk in a step toward enjoying both life and work equally. Let’s face it, we all need to work, but do we love what we do? Or do we just do it to earn an income and support our family?” said Karlie. The thought of starting a business with a young family can be daunting and not an easy decision to make. Although she had a back-up plan in place, Karlie’s determination and self-belief drove her to want to succeed on her own; “I believed in myself and I am a ‘doer’, which always helps. I live by the motto ‘She said she could, so she did’. Starting a business involves lots of late nights and lots of networking and marketing through the day. I was also lucky to have an established reputation throughout my career as a banker”. Wearing both a mum and business owner cap can be a juggle, especially during school holidays. The balance can include working at night when the kids are sleeping, even if it means sending emails at 2am! Making sure that the kids are understanding and supportive of their mummy working is important, but doesn’t always happen, “The hard part is when you need to talk on the phone and the kids are quiet and then the minute the phone rings, they fight. I’m sure many mums can relate to this”. Despite the late nights and coffees, being a successful, working mum also brings its benefits. The flexibility of attending school functions or just having an MDO (Mum’s Day Off ) can be great. “I really love the fact that I have taken the risk, jumped in the deep end of the big unknown area of new business and given it a go. I would never look back now and I think I would really struggle to go back to the corporate world having had so much flexibility to juggle all the things mums juggle” Karlie explained. For any mothers wanting to start their own business, Karlie has three main steps as her words of advice. Step One: Believe in yourself, what you are doing and make yourself stand out. Step Two: Have the support from your partner/family, do your research, write a business plan and set goals. Step Three: Do it! What have you got to lose? Why wait? Give it a go. “I love Mother’s Day. The kids spoil me every year with little gifts from school and breakfast in bed. It’s a nice day we get to spend together and watch each other laugh and have some fun”. Karlie and her children | Image Supplied

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Does Exercise Improve Bone Density? If So, Which Exercises & Why? The short answer is yes, exercise can improve bone density even in post-menopausal women and older men. The key is selecting the right type of exercise and continuing to do it regularly. Firstly, new bone formation happens at sites of bone stress. Indeed, bone strength improves substantially even with only small changes in bone density (BMD) when bone is added at these sites. To improve bone density requires commitment. A minimum of six months of regular exercise, 3-6 days per week can realize significant bone density benefits. The exercises that really improve strength are high impact exercises such as jumping, rather than simply resistance or aerobic exercise. Here are some examples. 20-year-old women who did 10 x two-legged maximum vertical jumps 8-12 seconds apart, 3 times per week for 6 months showed significantly increased BMD at the femoral neck and lumbar spine, compared to controls. Simple skipping, bounding and depth jumping exercises done 6 days per week for 1 year were effective for reversing bone loss in menopausal women. 5 years of resistance training with weighted vest and an average 51.7 jumps/day, 3 times/wk, from a 20.3-cm-high step, improved femoral neck bone density compared with a control group in postmenopausal woman aged 64.1–69.9 years. Men with prostate cancer that undergo androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) usually lose significant bone mass as testosterone

helps to keep bones strong. A recent 6-month study of men on ADT showed that those who did no special exercise lost 3.2% of lumbar bone density, a second group completing a combination of resistance and aerobic exercise also lost 2.6%, while those who completed a combination of resistance training and the impact loading exercises such as hopping, skipping and jumping exhibited no significant change in bone mineral density over the same time period. Clearly high impact exercises like jumping are highly important for bone density. Why might this be? Well it comes down to something called the piezoelectric effect! The stress of exercise deforms bone collagen molecules causing tiny electrical charges to move from the inside to the outside surface of bone at the site of stress (the piezoelectric effect). This attracts bone-building cells (called osteoblasts) to the site. These cells then deposit more bone (calcium & collagen) on the stressed side of the bone, increasing bone density & strength. This effect is maximised when the loading forces on bone are highest e.g. from high impact exercises. Hopping, skipping and jumping cause the most stress on bones, and so these forms of exercise (rather than simple weight training or aerobic exercise) are the ones you will need to do regularly to build bone. By building-up carefully, and maybe with a little supervision, you’ll be surprised how easy these exercises are to do safely even for older people.

Camille Nominated to be the New Bondi Vet Pony the Great Dane/Bull Mastiff, Leo the Golden Labrador and two pet sheep, which enjoy going for walks with the dogs every morning. When asked what she enjoys most about having her own veterinary practice, Camille said; “I used to work as an employed veterinarian, however since owning my own business, I actually don’t work, even though I am at work for 70 hours a week, 7 days a week. The difference for me is that as an employer, I can work as hard as I like to build my business the way that I want. Since purchasing the veterinary hospital 7 years ago, I have tripled the business and created 9 new jobs! “The best part about working in the local community is getting to know everyone. The clientele are linked together by neighbours, friends and family, and it is amazing how many clients know of other clients. It is amazing what a private human confessional a consultation for a pet is. I get to know about people’s lives, and share their journey through life she added. What does Camille have to be the next Bondi Vet? “I am open to adventure! I am straight forward, honest and I truly love animals. Come on and show your support for a local business owner who could very well be the next Bondi Vet, “I grew up in the Blue Mountains, went to Mount Riverview Primary School, Springwood Primary School and Springwood High School. So I am a local!

As May has arrived, with it the crisp mornings and cooler nights. I am quite a fan of the freshness that arrives with May. Call me crazy, or keen for a challenge. Like many people before us, we have decided to tackle a 'Block-Style' renovation at our home of 17 years....... heading into Winter! It has been such an interesting introduction to the world of renovating. Currently we are in the 'de-clutter' phase. A case of recycle, re-use or remove. To sift through 17 years of accumulated 'stuff ' brings with it a certain sense of satisfaction as we start to clear it all out. We have received many quotes for work around our 'tired' home. It has been such a wonderful resource of local trades and services to call on many of the contacts you find right here in the Gazette. These local businesses support our local sporting teams, donate funds to many local causes and provide sponsorship across a variety of areas. It's nice to return the support, it brings with it a real sense of community. We Live.Love.Local! "Do the right thing, even when no one is looking, it's called integrity." For now, sit back with a cuppa in hand and enjoy your Community News.
