Jason’s Gutsy Challenge In Cambodia When his father died of oesophageal cancer last year, Glenmore local Jason Webb thought “Why, in this day and age and with all the technology we have, can’t we find an answer? It occurred to me then well, why can’t I do something?” Jason took action and from the 15 – 24 October he undertook the GI Cancer Institute’s Gutsy Challenge bike ride in Cambodia after raising over $5,000 to fight gastrointestinal cancer. Cycling over 360km in the Cambodian humidity, through mud and rain, was no small feat, but Jason was determined to make a difference, “Earlier this year, when I received an invitation to join from Associate Professor Chris Karapetis, a leading oncologist in GI cancer, on a Gutsy Challenge across Cambodia, it ticked all the boxes.” GI cancer is a very personal issue for Jason. His father and grandfather both experienced reflux and Barret’s Oesophagus, as does Jason himself and family members. Reflux and Barret’s Oesophagus increase the risk of developing oesophageal cancer. “My grandfather and my father both suffered the same fate, but maybe I can save my own life - or the lives of my children.” Jason is the author of Life Through a Straw, a story of his experience of being mis-diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Best Wishes For Local Students As HSC Written Exams Commence Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, has wished the 1,010 students enrolled locally the very best as the 2016 HSC written exams commence, beginning with the first of two English papers. Tanya Davies said students should feel extremely proud of their accomplishment, with the HSC exams representing the culmination of 13 years of formal schooling education. “Obtaining the HSC qualification is a fantastic achievement. It is an internationally recognised qualification and is the pinnacle for school-based education throughout Australia,” Tanya Davies said. “Drawing from personal experience, my advice to students worried about exams would be to ensure that they get enough sleep, undertake regular exercise, where able, as well as to make healthy eating choices, all of which will assist in reducing stress for these final, end-of-school exams,” said Tanya Davies. NSW has a long-term trend of increasing numbers of students completing Year 12. In 2016, nearly 5,000 more students will sit HSC exams compared to five years ago, with 69,350 students on track to achieve the HSC credential, the highest number on record. Earlier in the year, the Baird Government announced reforms to the HSC that will strengthen the integrity and international reputation of the qualification, as well as better prepare students for work, training, university and beyond, in light of changing circumstances in the 21st century. 118 written exams will be conducted over the course of the next three weeks, until exams conclude on Friday, 4 November with Design and Technology. Students will receive their results via email, SMS and online from 6am on Thursday, 15 December. Students and parents can find further information by visiting the Board of Studies, Teaching and Educational Standards NSW website at: http://www. boardofstudies.nsw.edu.au/

Glenmore community invited to join a Bucket Brigade

This year Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) is celebrating its 25th Anniversary of McHappy Day and inviting Glenmore community groups to show their support. Getting together to form a ‘Bucket Brigade’ will help the charity raise a record breaking $3.8 million for seriously ill children and their families across Australia. Taking place on Saturday 12th November, McHappy Day will once again bring the community together for a fun family day out, while raising much needed funds for RMHC’s essential programs and services which have so far helped over 120,000 Australian families. Local community groups including businesses, dance groups, the fire brigade and ambulance services are encouraged to get involved and support seriously ill children and their families by volunteering their time to help collect donations in fundraising buckets at their local McDonald’s restaurant on McHappy Day. Ronald McDonald Houses are attached to major women's or children’s hospitals and provide accommodation for families with a seriously ill child while they are receiving treatment. Raising funds on McHappy Day will help even more families stay close together at one of the toughest times in their lives and continue to provide families with a home away from home. “The power of family closeness is a driving factor in the work of RMHC, with families telling us that their ability to stay together during their child’s treatment has a positive effect on both their child’s psychological wellbeing and on the pace of recovery, said local licensee Ian Garton, McDonald’s Glenmore Park. Since 1981 the Ronald McDonald Houses have collectively housed over 2.97 million nightly guests and this number is set to grow as the demand from families continues to increase. “Bucket Brigades are a simple and fun way for people in the

Glenmore community to get involved and help us reach our target of $3.8 million this year, which equates to providing over 28,000 nights’ accommodation for Australian families at one of the 16 Ronald McDonald Houses across Australia, added Ian. “McDonald’s and its local franchisees provide major support to the charity’s operations so that your donation helps even more families of seriously ill children in Australia. A number of Australian celebrities will be doing their bit for McHappy Day to help raise awareness and funds across Australia. Why not help make a difference and join them? To form a ‘Bucket Brigade’ or get involved at your local McDonald’s please contact the McHappy Day Project Office on mchappyday@ppr.com.au.

FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

Looking For Joy It is sad when life becomes so routine that special things, things that deserve celebration, are largely taken for granted. For many people, Christmas has a danger of becoming like that. What I mean is that, every year Christmas makes a big splash in our lives, but then we move on, hardly noticing that it has happened, until next year when we do it all again. And really, it is no surprise some of us feel like this, because it seems as if Christmas decorations and paraphernalia are on sale in the shops earlier and earlier, and it can become a bit of a “ho hum, here we go again” sort of thing. Yet at Glenmore Park Anglican Church (GPAC), we know that the joy of Christmas, the joy of celebrating the coming of Jesus into our world, is always something that should be celebrated, something that should be enjoyed, and something we should make a very big deal about. We know this because in the Bible, God declares to us how Jesus came into our world to give us a fresh start with God and a real, sure hope for the future as we put our faith and trust in Jesus, committing our lives to him. At GPAC, especially at Christmas, we want to share this message of great joy and hope with everyone in Glenmore Park and beyond. GPAC’s Christmas celebrations kick off with our Christmas Gingerbread Extravaganza (see the advertisement on this page).

These events are incredibly popular so please make sure that you book your place! We would love to see you! Our fantastic “Carols in the Park” is on again at Blue Hills Oval in Glenmore Park on Sunday 18th December and our Christmas Celebration Services are 6pm and 11pm on Christmas Eve and 8am and 9.30am on Christmas Day. Watch out for more information on this. But for now, my prayer is that as over the weeks ahead as you prepare for Christmas that you will be looking forward to celebrating the new life and real joy that you can have in Jesus. Take A Seat Along The Great River Walk

The Nepean River has been revamped for walkers and visitors with new ‘art’ seats installed along the lower path of the Great River Walk. The pieces of art recognise and respond to aspects of the history, social and environmental attributes of the location. Spread along the 2.9km between the bridges, the sandstone block seats designed by artist Paul Johnson with help from local high school students reflect four themes around the Nepean River: the living river, crossing the river, working the river and on the river. Penrith Mayor John Thain said the locations of the sandstone block seats are in the ideal rest and meeting places when

walking from bridge to bridge. “The Great River Walk already offers stunning scenery along the Nepean River and the seats offer an invitation to anyone to take a seat and take in the beauty the River has to offer,” Councillor Thain said. “Council has taken the opportunity to incorporate public art into the Great River Walk and this art work recognises and responds to the rich history, social and environment of the location,” he said. The seats were designed in consultation with the Penrith District Historical Society and students from Caroline Chisholm College and St Dominic’s College. Paul said he was inspired by the Cumberland plain land snail to create the conceptual framework for one of the major works along the river. “Using this endemic and endangered snail as a reference, the seat/sculpture becomes a protective shell for people on the walkway,” Mr Johnson said. “With its inward curving seat, intimacy and conversation is encouraged,” he said. The installation of the seats has come in time for the inaugural Real Festival, an exciting program of River, Environment, Art and Lifestyle activities held from 4-5 November.  (L-R): Blake Lloyd, Jenford Ross, Brooke Vincent, Karen King (Caroline Chisholm College), Amber Fazon Steven Lewis (St Dominics College) and Kaitlyn Gogon | Image Supplied

FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School

Soul Matters: Our “Shape Up!” Society “Shape up!” That’s the message advertising throws at us constantly as the way to be accepted. “Shape up” by working on a Ken or Barbie body shape. So if you are a man with small muscles or a woman with cellulite in the “wrong” places there is something deficient about you. Really?? It doesn’t stop there does it. “Shape up!” in terms of the car you drive, the home you own, the beer you drink, the types of clothes you wear, the shape of your body, or the job you do. And if we come up short we are left with the gnawing feeling we haven’t made it yet. But of course it isn’t true! If we hinge our sense of being happy in our skin on mass media messages with the sole intent of selling us products and services, we won’t do our souls any favours. Think with me for a minute about how much we worry about “shaping up”, how much we buy in order to “shape up”, and how much we have to work to earn enough to make that possible. Some of us feel we are less than others, and our souls suffer while we strive to make up the gap, and all because we don’t have enough money to “shape up” in the first place. So money determines who is accepted or not, but having money has nothing to do with who we are as people. The Bible says that Jesus hung out mainly with people who couldn’t “shape up” – outcasts such as prostitutes and ordinary people. His message from God was: “Come as you are – you can be a friend of God.” Jesus calls us to change our thinking about God – to realise God loves people even if they can’t “shape up” in the ways our society demands, or in terms of fulfilling religious rules. God loves and accepts us (full-stop) and He wants to be a part of our lives. Be well in your soul, Go well, Paul from. Pg 1

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps… The beliefs and expectations held by parents can make their job more difficult. Some of these beliefs are: It’s just a phase, all kids do it, don’t they? Certainly some child behaviour is related to their age. For example, young children under the age of 4 years have difficulty sharing because they are egocentric and they haven’t developed ‘theory of mind’ (the realisation that other people have thoughts and feelings of their own). This doesn’t mean that you don’t address the behaviour by communicating boundaries and limits. It is still our job as parents to deal with mistaken behaviour immediately and to consistently apply consequences. The consequences do not need to be harsh (yelling, smacking, extensive time-outs), but they do need to be consistent. If you think the behaviour is just a phase, it may stop you from dealing with it at the time, and it can become more severe. They are doing it deliberately to annoy me. Most children do not behave in certain ways to deliberately upset you. Most of the time, they do things because they don’t remember previous lessons, or they are lost in their own world. Dr Becky Bailey, a clinical psychologist in the USA, says that you usually have to repeat an instruction about 2000 times before the child integrates it into his/her routine. Thinking that a child is behaving deliberately will make you more angry, and there is a chance that you will overreact with harsh discipline, and shame your child (focus on ‘who’ he is, rather than ‘what’ he did). Children need support and encouragement for a long time before they learn how to be a fully functioning human. They do not develop their adult brain until the age of 25 years. Thinking that our children are being wilful, manipulative, or wicked in a given situation does not allow you to have a clear and calm mind, or enable you to think about how you can contribute to your child’s success and teach him/her new skills and behaviours.

Willow Brings Home The Silverware Local girl Willow Hampton has just returned from the Australian Oztag Junior Championships held recently in Coffs Harbour, bringing home a Silver Medal in the Under 11 Girls Team whilst representing the West Sydney Tiger Cubs. In the final, the West Sydney Tiger Cubs Girls narrowly missed out winning the gold medal, with the Stingrays winning 3-1 in a very tight and skillful game. “I enjoyed spending time with my friends playing the game I love at the Championships. The competition between all teams was friendly which made the tournament fun to be a part of” said Willow. In only her third season of playing Oztag for the Nepean District Club, Willow played State Cup Oztag for the first time this year in February. By playing State Cup, she was eligible to trial for the West Sydney Tiger Cubs. The trial was held in July with players from the Nepean District, Hills District, Parramatta District and Norwest District Clubs all vying for a spot in the Tiger Cubs team. Willow was selected and trained on Saturday afternoons at Crestwood leading up to the Championships. Willow hopes to continue playing Oztag and Touch Football at both club and representative levels. This year, she also played rugby league for the Glenmore Park Brumbies in the Boy’s Team. Next season, she would like to play in the Girl’s Team, improving her skill level even further.  All smiles for Willow after the Championships | Image Supplied

THE BUSINESS BUILDER

Article Written + Submitted by: Zoltan Szentirmay Founder of CFO@CALL | Author of “WHY BUSINESSES STOP GROWING and What You can do About it” P: 1300 854 480 E: admin@cfoatcall.com.au W: cfoatcall.com.au

It’s Simply Not Cricket!

“And suppose even when the game is finished you didn’t know who won until you read about it in the paper six months later.” Just imagine how hard it would be to successfully Captain this cricket team when you didn’t know the score. You wouldn’t know how many runs you made, how long to bat and whether to play for time or put the other side in and try and win the game. And suppose even when the game is finished you didn’t know who won until you read about it in the paper six months later. At that stage there wouldn’t be much you could do about it. Unfortunately far too many businesses operate just this way. They don’t know whether they made a profit or loss until their public Accountant does their tax return up to six months after the end of the financial year, some times more, by which time so much water has passed under the bridge, so like the Captain of the cricket team there is often not much they can do about it. Despite this, quite a lot of these businesses make a profit. But they would have made much better profits if they were in control of their “financial score”. Unfortunately, every year we still hear that small businesses are closing their doors. Whilst there are many reasons, by far the most common is bad financial management. The owners of small businesses are generally very competent in the technical side of their business. They usually also know the importance of being able to sell themselves and the goods and services they produce. But when it comes to the finances too many seem to think they can leave it to somebody else. To be successful these days the Managers of every business, big or small, must have a complete picture of their financial situation. Whilst it’s not necessarily the owner’s job to produce these pictures

– their Accountant or bookkeeper will help - but when they are produced it is their job to use them. Just to be clear Bookkeeping and Accounting though related are different subjects. Bookkeeping is the recording of financial information within the business. Accounting is the production of the financial picture from the information flowing from the Bookkeeping system. The amount of detail in each picture depends upon particular circumstances but they all tell some basic stories. • The budget shows how much profit or loss the business is likely to make. • The Profit and Loss Statement shows how much profit the business made or lost and why • The Balance Sheet shows how the business stood at a point in time • The Funds Statement shows the sources for financial resources and how they were used. Like the cricket Captain who knows the score and makes decisions based on it, by using these regularly updated timely pictures the Manager can effectively control his business by moving quickly to correct any obvious weakness in operations. Also by having an accurate knowledge of the financial situation the Manager should not be embarrassed by the sudden financial crises and will be in a position to realistically plan for the future. We trust that you’re getting better information than this poor cricket Captain.

Noah’s Parkrun Record

 Noah and his father Brian, focused and determined | Image Supplied

Glenmore Park resident Noah Lang has broken the 10 Years and Under Boy’s record at the Penrith Parkrun 5km course at Penrith Lakes. Running in his 9th Parkrun, Noah finished with a time of 20.08 minutes, previously beating his personal best time of 20.34 minutes. 10 year old Noah’s first Parkrun was only a year and a half ago, where he finished with a time of 23 minutes. “It was hard and I struggled because it was the furthest that I had ever run. I started training for my next Parkrun and one month later I went back and took 1.22 minutes off my time. My new PB then was 21.41 minutes” said Noah. With the record for 10 Years and Under Boy’s then being a time of 20.52 minutes, Noah’s training and determination helped him to achieve this goal. “I train twice a week with athletics, then I do a 4 km run on the weekend. I love training” explained Noah. Noah trains with his father Brian and his brother Zane and they have run several Parkruns together, proving that it really is a family affair. “It’s such a great race. It’s for everyone with different fitness levels and all ages, whether you run, jog or walk. It’s electronically timed and is free every Saturday. It’s also run by volunteers who do a fantastic job” said Brian Lang, Noah’s father. “I love running. I love the longer races like 800m or 1,500m, but my favourite is the 5 km Penrith Parkrun at Penrith Lakes” concluded Noah. HEALTH MATTERS

Vitamin D – Does It Really Help Bone Density? Vitamin D isn’t strictly a vitamin. It’s actually a steroid-likehormone called a secosteroid. When UVB radiation from sunlight hits skin cells, it converts (a form of ) cholesterol into vitamin D. So how does vitamin D help build bone? Vitamin D helps ensure the blood calcium levels remain normal. When blood calcium drops the active form of vitamin D increases three things: 1. intestinal absorption of dietary calcium 2. the reuptake of Calcium from urine in the kidneys 3. removal of calcium from bone (when insufficient dietary calcium) So if you have enough calcium in your diet, vitamin D helps calcium into the blood stream for delivery to mineralising bone. But vitamin D can’t help build bone if dietary calcium is inadequate. Vitamin D also increases production of the main calcium-binding-protein in bone. But the ‘Sunshine Vitamin’’ is much more than a bone builder. It actually activates (or represses) the function of at least 913 genes, and possibly affects expression of as many as 27000. So it’s a big hitter for health!! So who needs vitamin D? Everyone! But unfortunately just under 25% (or 4 million) Aussie adults, have a vitamin D deficiency. So how do we best get vitamin D? And is vitamin D from supplements that same as from sunshine? The simple answer is that vitamin D is best gotten from the

Sun! There are a number of complex reasons for this, but in short Vitamin D from the skin is in a chemical form (sulphated) that makes it water soluble & more bioavailable than non-sulphated supplemental forms. Sun derived vitamin D also lasts twice as long in the blood stream. A person wearing a bathing suit who has just enough sun to get a slight pinkness to the skin 24 h after exposure (takes 1020mins & called 1 erythemal dose), makes between 10,000 and 25,000 IU of vitamin D. But vitamin D is only made between 10am and 3pm in spring, summer, and autumn, so you need to go out around midday! But what about sun exposure & skin cancer? Although UV radiation can damage skin, both active vitamin D (and lumisterol 3) produced in the skin actually protect skin cells from UV damage, via a newly discovered (quick acting) pathway. So getting a little bit of UV isn’t so bad. Just don’t get really burnt! So what does Vitamin D do in real people’s bones? Well, in a 2-year trial, osteoporotic postmenopausal women on a ‘calciumadequate diet’ given 75Îźg of vitamin D daily, had an increase in bone density of .38%. Women given vitamins D (75Îźg) plus K (45mg) daily, increased their bone density even more – almost 1.5%!! Women just given 615mg of extra calcium actually lost .79% in bone density.

Here we are at the pointy end of the year. For most, it’s a busy time of juggling numerous end of year events and commitments, all the while attempting to remain cool, calm and collected as the Festive Season approaches. Yes! The shopping centres become abuzz with people everywhere, frantically in search of the right gift for those near and dear. Workplaces strive to conclude the year that was, and families come together to celebrate special time with their loved ones. Christmas is a magical time of year, that brings with it love and laughter, memories of good times had and good times to come. It’s also a time to reflect on the year that was, and fond memories of those that have left us too soon. Have you got the best 'Christmas display' in the neighbourhood? We want to hear from you! For those that celebrate the festivities of Melbourne Cup Day and the race that stops a nation, I hope you back(ed) a winner! I trust you enjoyed this month's edition of Your Community News. Until next month, our final edition for the year........ Don't wait for everything to be perfect before you start enjoying your life.
