Fernhill to Flourish Under New Plan

Western Sydney’s Fernhill Estate will be open for bushwalking and picknicking from next year, under a five-year plan to progressively transform the historic 423-hectare estate into a public parkland. Minister for Planning and Public Spaces Rob Stokes said the Fernhill Estate Foundation Plan of Management to 2026 set a path for how the estate would open up. “The NSW Government purchased Fernhill Estate in 2018 with a vision to transform this historic home into a parkland for people, and the five-year plan of management sets out how we will get on with this important job,” Mr Stokes said. “Fernhill Estate is a green jewel in Sydney’s crown. Over the next five years it will open up for bushwalking, bike riding, picnicking and events.” Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said Fernhill Estate would be an iconic western Sydney parkland. “Fernhill is such a special place that has been closed to the public for over a century. Now it will become Western Sydney’s answer to Centennial Park as one of NSW great public parks,” Mr Ayres said. “As Western Sydney grows, Fernhill will provide locals with a new open space and be a drawcard for tourists from all over.” Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said the launch of the Fernhill Estate five-year plan of management was a milestone for the Mulgoa community. “The plan sets out how the Estate will open up in a way that manages and preserves its significant heritage and biodiversity,” Ms Davies said. “As one of Sydney’s oldest surviving estates, its preservation is important so generations to come can experience its rich history.” The Estate recently re-opened for self-guided walking tours on Sundays, which will give people a glimpse of the grounds and a taste of what’s to come over the next few years. There is Freedom and There is Freedom How great it is that we are now free to meet up more and to go places! I have five kids who have been itching for the freedom to connect with their friends. Freedom is slowly returning to play sport, do business, travel, go to our workplaces, and eat out. These sorts of things reflect an outward type of freedom. By that I mean the removal of restrictions to our external, physical lives. But there is another type of freedom that easing external restrictions might not bring us. When approaching ‘Freedom Day’ in New South Wales a bloke I know said to me, “I didn’t feel free before the lockdown, but lockdown distracted me from the ways I feel captive inside. Losing external freedoms jumped into focus but now I feel that deeper sense of a lack of freedom coming back again”. He went on to describe how he was worried about things; financial things, family things, and health things. He said, “I feel like I am in lockdown inside”. You might have an image in your mind of this guy and be surprised to discover that he is highly successful in many ways. But just not free. Not free to let his soul rest. Not free to be confident in his life, so always spinning to make something of it as if (in all his success) he has nothing. Not free to live well because the idea of dying has him captive. Not free to help anyone else. Not free to enjoy love and beauty. In the Bible, Jesus addresses the issue of this type of inner freedom by saying, “If you hear my words and follow them you will know the truth and the truth will set you free”. This is an invitation. Outward freedoms are awesome, but inner freedom is what determines the quality of our lives. I pray that you find it whether we are in physical lockdown or not.

With the Penrith Panthers now crowned the 2021 NRL Premiers, fans from across the community have been proudly showing their support by decorating their homes in Panthers colours. One street in Glenmore Park was transformed into, Panthers Drive, gathering the attention of adoring fans. During the Panthers run to the NRL Finals, Wittama Drive became Panthers Drive as eight homes in the local street proudly showed their support for the Mighty Panthers! “Panthers Drive was my idea. We are a close-knit street that, prior to lockdown would socialise on a regular basis. My husband Mitch and I moved into Wittama Drive less than a year ago and we were struck by how welcoming everyone was. As we got to know the neighbours better, we realised we were surrounded by Panther fans” said Jess Page, resident and organiser of Panthers Drive. “After discussions on a group chat, we all agreed that if the Panthers made it to the Grand Final, we would decorate. As fate would have it, I had one left over sign and that’s how Panthers Drive was (un)officially born” she continued. “Jess was conscious it was school holidays and to give the kids a project to work on she set about ordering our street’s decorations on the full-time whistle of the Panthers and Storm game and the discussions started” said Kate Forbes, fellow resident of Panthers Drive. Balloons were blown up, streamers were hung, signs painted, and poles taped to decorate the eight houses in Penrith Panthers colours. “It took the best part of 4 days to complete. Kate’s mini football field with goal post was a significant drawcard. There was also handmade streamers, banners, balloons, and signs made from corflute. Each house selected a player to support, and I made a corresponding sign” Jess explained. With wet weather forecast, the displays were also made from materials to withstand the rain. The community support for Panthers Drive was positive, and it attracted the attention of the media including television. “The community support was phenomenal! For the entire week, we had cars tooting, people waving and children taking photos on our front lawns. The feedback from the community was incredibly positive and many people passing by saw it, like us as a source of joy during lockdown” smiled Jess. “The community feeling was great. After creating the atmosphere in our street, we heard many people saying they wished they lived in a street like ours” added Kate. With Christmas just around the corner, there may just be another surprise. r Proud Penrith supporters on Panthers Drive | Image Supplied by Kate Forbes

NSW Government Announces Scholarship Winners

One hundred apprentices across NSW have been awarded a Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship worth a total of $1.5 million, funded by the NSW Government. Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa congratulated local scholarship recipient Mr Kalan Turvey on their achievement and commitment to vocational education and training. “The annual scholarships, worth $15,000 over three years, support apprentices who are experiencing financial or personal hardship, demonstrate a high aptitude for vocational education and training, and show a commitment to their training,” Tanya Davies. “These grants are also a recognition that while apprenticeships are vital to ensuring Mulgoa has a pipeline of skilled workers, we also understand it’s not always easy to complete an apprenticeship”. “The scholarship program is all about giving aspiring apprentices an opportunity with some added financial support to help start, change or further their career”. Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education Geoff Lee said the NSW Government is committed to ensuring training for apprentices remains accessible to all. “A Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship is a fantastic opportunity to get ahead, and I congratulate the 100 recipients of the scholarships as outstanding apprentices in NSW,” Mr Lee said. “Where people are supported to engage fully in education, training, skilled employment, or a combination, they are more likely to have a secure economic future and contribute positively to the community”. “I encourage all the people of NSW to explore the range of initiatives and programs available to support apprentices, including the Bert Evans Apprentice Scholarship program, as well as NSW Government initiatives such as the JobTrainer program”. The scholarship program is named in honour of the late Bert Evans AO, a passionate advocate of vocational education for more than 30 years. HOW TO APPLY? Raise Waste-Related requests at The Waste Spot

Penrith City Council is inviting residents to jump online and head to The Waste Spot, the digital platform dedicated to supporting residents to raise waste requests and provide feedback to Council as quickly and easily as possible. The Waste Spot is a digital alternative to Council’s existing telephone customer support service and aims to give residents another opportunity to contact Council, while helping to ensure fast responses and efficient resolutions are achieved. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM praised the online destination as a ‘round the clock option residents can use to let Council know of their needs at a time convenient to them. “Innovative services like this are nothing short of what Penrith deserves and this is just the first step," Cr McKeown said. “This digital service will work alongside existing contact methods and will help make life easier for those who prefer to access services online. “Sustainability is one of Penrith City Council’s biggest priorities when it comes to providing our community with a high-quality and easy to use waste management service. “Over the years, we have pioneered best practice in Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) initiatives which have contributed to Penrith leading the way when it comes to sustainable waste management. “Council takes great pride in providing a service that is easy to access and provides the solutions to our community’s queries or problems,” she said. It’s easier than ever to arrange a bulky waste collection, take care of a rubbish spill, ask a waste-related question or provide feedback at a time that’s convenient for you. Racing Ahead with Purple Sector With two rounds remaining in the TCR Australia Series, privateer motorsport team Purple Sector are looking to finish strong. Team Manager and Glenmore Park resident Paul Fry has invited local businesses with the opportunity to sponsor the team in the final NSW races for the year at Sydney Motorsport Park and Bathurst. Lachlan Mineeff is the driver for Purple Sector this season. He drives a Volkswagen Golf GTI in the TCR Australia Series. “I have been involved with Lachlan’s racing since 2017. We started planning the team in 2019 as a joint effort between me, my business, VAGPARTS Australia (offering genuine and performance parts for Audis and Volkswagens) and Lachlan and his family business, Southern Star Truck Centre, which leases commercial vehicles. We joined TCR Australia for the second round of 2021, at Philip Island” said Paul to the Glenmore Gazette. Being a new entrant to TCR, Lachlan’s time spent learning the ropes has been exciting. “Lachlan’s first race he started last (20th) and moved up 11 places to finish 9th. It was very impressive considering it was a wet race, and Lachlan had never even seen the car in person prior to the weekend, let alone spent any time in the driver’s seat. That was our best result, but each weekend we are getting more comfortable with the car, and we are very excited and confident to start next season in the top half of the grid” Paul stated. The two remaining rounds will be at Sydney Motorsport Park this month (dates not yet officially released), supporting the Supercars and at Bathurst from November 30 to December 6, as part of a 6-day event combined with the Bathurst 1000. “We look to make special sponsorship packages relative to the business. Just having a logo on the car or getting to come to an event may not be worth a lot to many businesses. We usually ask, ‘What would be really great for you? Let’s see if we can make it happen’. “We have done drive days, driver training, race car setup theory and training, hot laps, promotional displays, VIP access to race events, logos on the car, and many other things. Each weekend costs us about $30,000, and most of this is paid for by the team. We usually start our packages at about $500 and go up from there” ended Paul. Anyone interested in sponsorship can contact Paul Fry at paul@vagparts.com.au or Lachlan Mineeff at lachlan@lachlanmineeff. com.au. r Race 1 at Philip Island, after overtaking James Moffat | Image: Tenayah McLeod

Our River, Our Walk Each day, hundreds of locals descend upon the Great River Walk as part of their exercise routines. It’s a walk that is enjoyed by all that brings us together. One local resident has started a group to share the beauty of this iconic destination. Phillip Goddard started ‘Nepean River Walkers, The Great River Walk’ on Facebook at the end of August this year. In just a short amount of time, the group has been embraced with over 1,000 members joining. “Lockdown was on, and I thought to myself, what’s happening on the walk? I couldn’t find any information about it, especially with the open track conditions after the rain. There was a lack of information, so I decided to start a Facebook group. As a local, I love the Nepean River area and the Lower Blue Mountains, so I was more than happy to promote it” explained Phillip. “I enjoy the river scenery, park areas along the walk and the local history. And, of course, the food and the cafes” he continued. Whilst many of us taking the Great River Walk begin at Regentville and follow across the Yandhai Nepean Crossing into Emu Plains, Phillip said that there is more to explore on the walk. “There are heaps of hidden gems all along the river. Most people that visit walk the bridge-to-bridge track. Some that I enjoy, that are easily excusable, include the lower track on the Emu Plains side (towards Leonay) and the close by walks like Knapsack Bridge” Phillip said. Phillip encourages the local community to get behind the group and welcomes everyone. “Members can post photos of the scenery, track conditions or anything they think that might be interesting involving the Great River Walk. Promoting the area can only lead to more investment. Penrith City Council is already working on upgrading Regatta Park and Tench Reserve. “Furthermore, I have been contacted by a member of the group about wheelchair access on the M4. I’m hoping to link a feedback email address to Council that may assist in improvements” he ended. To become a member of the group, search ‘Nepean River Walkers, The Great River Walk’ on Facebook.

Get Ready for the Elves

Bringing your

Vision to Life

Bathroom Renovation – Extensions Carpentry – Decks – Pergolas – Roofing Lic No. 283341C

As we fast approach December 1, elves are preparing to leave the North Pole and visit the many homes around the world. Glenmore Park Mum Lauren Thaler has been working with the elves to help make their stay a little bit easier. “I have been working hard with the elves to create a pack that children will love. These packs include a range of fun and easy crafts, games, simple experiments, and jokes. December is the busiest time of the year for the elves, sometimes Santa’s little helpers need some help too!” smiled Lauren. She has enjoyed making the packs with the elves and is sure that families will love them too. “The last few years we have had an elf come to visit our home and sometimes our elf would be very tired from flying back to the North Pole every night to report to Santa. So, I thought, wouldn’t it be great if I could help our elf this year by preparing everything for him. “Our elf ‘Buddy’ has been writing to me about what he has planned for this Christmas, so I’m able to give him a head start by helping with his 24 days of activities” she said. So, why does Lauren love Christmas? “Christmas is so magical, it’s my favourite time of the year. The stores are buzzing, Christmas music is playing (Mariah on repeat), and there’s excitement on the children’s faces. But the best part is spending time with family and friends. Even more so, after the year we’ve had. Is it too early to start a countdown?” Lauren ended. The packs are available now for pre-order. The elves can collect their packs from mid-November. Mulgoa Rise School Update

The NSW Government is delivering a new primary school to cater for the growing population in the Mulgoa Rise and Glenmore Park community. The Department of Education recently ran a Virtual Information Room to share plans with the community and offer an opportunity to provide feedback. The session ran from 30 August 2021 to 3 September 2021 and had 30 community members attend. The community members welcomed the new primary school putting forward questions on progress of the project and catchment areas once enrolments are open. The State Significant Development (SSD) application for the project has been lodged with the Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) with the public exhibition period concluding on 6 October 2021. The Department of Education will consider feedback on the proposal in due course. Subject to planning approval, mains works construction is anticipated to commence in 2022 with a forecast completion of the new primary school in early 2023. r An artist’s impression of the school | Image Supplied

FLOODS. WHAT’S YOUR PLAN? Even if it’s not raining where you live in the Hawkesbury-Nepean, it’s important to be aware of possible flooding. You can listen for weather warnings on the radio and TV, and regularly check the NSW SES website for local information. It will tell you if flooding is expected. If you live in the Hawkesbury-Nepean, checking the weather warnings and having a plan, can make all the difference.

Keeping Children Safe Online: What are they doing? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of COVID-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. This month, we conclude our three-part series on keeping children safe online. According to eSafety research, approximately 15% of children and 24% of teens admitted to behaving in a negative way with a peer online. When we consider children’s developing capacity to manage big emotions and impulses, as well as their growing interpersonal skills, this makes sense. Children need your guidance to develop respectful social behaviour both online and offline. Online communication can be difficult to navigate due to the often-faceless nature of it. It’s important to speak to your children about how this disconnection can make it feel like online actions and words are not as hurtful. However, we know that the adverse consequences on the mental health of someone being bullied online is not just equivalent to being bullied in person, but in some cases can be worse. We must encourage children to behave online just as they would in the real world. Drawing up a Family Technology Agreement is a great way to talk about the values that you share as a family. These agreements outline your expectations around the use of internet-enabled devices. Agreements can cover the amount of time spent online, the way your child is expected to behave online, and what your child will do if they feel worried or upset about something they see online. Navigating the online world successfully requires a certain level of maturity, discernment, knowledge, and skill; it is not simply about reaching a certain age. Therefore parents must play a proactive role in supporting their children’s online behaviour from the first turn using the iPad to their first personal mobile phone, and beyond. For more information and resources on this topic, please visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website on https://www.esafety. gov.au/parents.

Thank You Mr Bamford

He’s been a valued member of the local school community for over a decade and next month will see Regentville Public School Deputy Principal, David Bamford retire from full-time teaching. Mr Bamford started at Regentville Public School in 2007 and has spent the last 15 years at the school. He began teaching in 1981 as a casual teacher before commencing with the Department of Education in April 1984. “The very first day of Teachers College, I knew it was the career for me” explained David to the Glenmore Gazette. His teaching career would see him take up positions at Bidwill Public School, Faulconbridge Public School, Katoomba Public School, Jamisontown Public School and Regentville Public School. “Like most people who have been associated with Regentville Public School, I am proud of our achievements and our long history of providing public education. I am inspired by the many people in our school community that I work with. Regentville Public School will always have a place in my heart. I am proud to say that I am part of the Regentville Public School community” he reflected on his time at the school. Having taught hundreds of students at Regentville over the years and, in some cases two generations, Mr Bamford has many favourite memories of his time there. “I have enjoyed building strong working relationships with students and their families and meeting new students and parents every year, helping them to feel part of our school community. The 150 Year Celebration Day on 26 September 2018, Year 6 Canberra and Snow Trips, Year 5 Deer Park Camps, Year 4 Yarramundi Camps and P&C Discos all standout” he said. So, what are Mr Bamford’s plans when he steps away from teaching? “Spending time with my wife riding our bikes, kayaking, and travelling. Spending more time with my family and friends and playing more golf, lowering my handicap”. r Feature Article [Cover] David Bamford, Deputy Principal Regentville Public School standing outside the front office [Above] David Bamford, Deputy Principal Regentville Public School standing in front of sculpture marking 150 years of Regentville Public School. The Redback’s Bite

School Lunches Made Easier

Now that lockdown is over and school is back, the morning rush has begun. The struggle of getting the kids out of bed and ready for school is real. Then, of course, there’s the lunches to make! Local Mum Alison Sciberras has started Lunch Box Kidz to help ease this pain. Lunch Box Kidz began in June this year. The small business is a service for busy, caring parents or guardians who want to give their kids the very best lunchbox for every day of the week. “I used to be a Childcare Cook for over 10 years. As a mother, I know the challenges of making lunches on the run every day” said Alison Scibberas, Owner of Lunch Box Kidz. “I wanted to create a service that would help parents. Something that would give kids the opportunity to eat the same healthy food that I eat. Food that is nutritious, well balanced and home-made” she continued. Lunch Box Kidz has a website where lunches can be ordered for delivery. There are three menus, consisting of Standard ($10/ Day), Premium ($13/Day) and Gourmet ($17/Day). Each lunch box contains 4 food items and 1 drink, ideal for recess, lunch, and an afternoon snack. When ordering online, customers can choose lunches for 2 days, 3 days and 1 week. Delivery is available and is free within the Penrith local council area. Delivery fees are additional outside of this area. Cooler bags with gel packs are available to purchase, ensuring that the delivery is contactless. COVID safe practices are in place. Environmentally friendly biodegradable packaging is also used. “With school back up and running, we anticipate the menus to change every term from next year” ended Alison. For more information or to order, visit their website at www. lunchboxkidz.com.au. With lockdown now over, anticipation for the new 2021/22 cricket season for Glenmore Park Cricket Club has reached fever pitch. The local club is preparing to take the field this month and they are ready for a big season ahead. This year, the Redbacks will have 228 players registered in the local competition. This will be made up of 174 junior players and 54 senior players. The season is set to begin on Saturday 6th November. “After all that has been going on in our city over the last few months, it will be great to catch up with all our teammates and the club’s extended friends and families. We can’t wait for the new season to start for the Redbacks” said Michael Pelle, Secretary of Glenmore Park Cricket Club to the Glenmore Gazette. Despite last year’s disrupted season due to the pandemic, 2020/21 still had many highlights and personal milestones. This included two of their junior teams, the Under 11’s Red and Under 16’s Red both winning their respective Grand Finals. Registrations have already taken place for the upcoming season, however there are still some vacancies at the club. Both the Junior Blaster (Ages 5 to 7) and Master Blaster (Ages 7 to 10) Programs and the Under 10’s still have spots to fill. “I love being a part of Glenmore Park Cricket Club. Being a part of a community that supports each other in their love of cricket is pretty special” Michael ended. HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Migraine Auras – What Their Strange Features Tell Us About Migraines? 38% of migraine sufferers experience auras. Not all migraines involve auras, only 20% do. When present, auras last about 30 minutes; a migraine usually follows within 10 minutes. 20% of auras don’t become a migraine. Over 50 aura-symptoms have been described. Visual auras are by far the most frequent, although weakness, dizziness, numbness/tingling, and speech difficulties, are common. Studies show migraines result from damage to local brain cells. This causes altered function of the brain-region involved. If damage is severe enough, we perceive it consciously and aura results. The damaged brain cells also release a host of biochemicals, and if damage is sufficient biochemicals, are released to turn on local pain sensors (nociceptors) which results in us experiencing the pain we know as the migraine headache. So how are brain cells damaged? The brain is the most energy hungry organ in the body. It requires 10 times more oxygen than the rest of the body (Clarke & Sokoloff 1999). The brain is exquisitely sensitive to anything that hampers energy production including lack of oxygen and when brain cells can’t make enough energy, they are easily damaged. In the damaged, some neurons stop working (i.e., stop producing their normal electrical signals). In migraine, the area within which damage happens spreads like a wave across the cortical surface of the brain, involving ever more brain cells. This phenomenon is called a cortical spreading depression (CSD) The type of aura we get depends upon the region in which damage occurs. The area of the brain which controls vision is at the back of the head. It is known as Brodmann’s area 17. The visual cortex has the highest neuronal density of any brain region and the lowest relative density of supporting cells called astrocytes that protect brain cells from CSD. It is the brain region most sensitive to energy deprivation and thus migraine-auras are mostly visual because in most people the brain-cell-damage that initiates a CSD occurs in the vulnerable visual cortex. The simple reason migraine-auras are varied is that symptoms depend upon the brain region in which damage and CSD starts-and on where the damage wave travels to. r

November is now upon us, and Spring is well and truly in the air! ‘Freedom Day’ has already arrived and catching up with our loved ones is now a reality. Business is slowly returning to normal, with doors now open. It’s the perfect time to get out and support local business. Let’s all welcome them back after a tough few months. Thank you again to our longstanding and loyal advertisers and readers; and to those who have joined us this year. By supporting our advertising businesses, you’re supporting us too! On Thursday 11 November we remember our fallen heroes, and those that have died in the line of duty. We truly wouldn’t have experienced the ‘Freedom’ that we now know, without their courage and sacrifices. Grab yourself a cuppa, put your feet up and enjoy your community news. It’s your last chance before the Christmas rush. Community is about doing something together that makes belonging matter.
