Top form Tahlia! Tahlia Tupaea was recently selected into the School Sport Australia Open Girls Basketball team to tour Texas and Arizona this coming November and December. A huge achievement for Glenmore Park resident Tahlia who only recently turned 14. Her team is an open all schools team, where all the other team members are aged 17 and above. Tahlia now in her 5th season with the Penrith & Districts Basketball Association Representative Program, has played club basketball with the Glenmore Park Basketball Club since she
was six. This year, Tahlia was also invited to join the WNBL Sydney Uni Flames Academy. Other successes this year include, being a member of the NSW Metro team that won the gold medal at the Pacific Coast Slam (teams from the Australian East Coast and NZ competed) and winning a bronze medal in the U16 Nationals for NSW Metro. To raise much needed funds for the upcoming trip, Penrith Golf Club will be hosting a Golf Day on the 4th November, and a trivia night will be held on the12th November. Information will be posted on the Glenmore Park Basketball Club website. The club plays weekly at the Penrith Valley Regional Sports Centre,

Spring’s in the air, take care Spring has sprung, the grass has risen, and some residents are already finding out where the magpies are nesting. Penrith City Councillor Jim Aitken OAM said most of the City’s parks and reserves see an increase in usage by both humans and wildlife during the warmer months. “Spring is a great time for residents to get out and about and enjoy some healthy leisure time,” Councillor Aitken said. It’s also the time that our wildlife neighbours, such as insects, spiders, and birds come out.“Some insects and spiders become more active in the warmer weather and spring is the perfect time to be careful in greener areas such as reserves, parks and our own yards. “Spring is also a time that magpies are nesting. They can become aggressive and swoop on people walking underneath.“This can be especially dangerous for small children, so please keep an eye on them when out and about. “They have a right to areas of the City too. Generally, if we keep out of wildlife’s way and leave them alone: they’ll do the same for us.” If a resident feels that a magpie is a menace they can contact the National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) on 1300 361 967 or Council on 4732 7777.

Kev’s Korner “No matter how rich you become, how famous or powerful, when you die the size of your funeral will still pretty much depend on the weather.” Michael Pritchard. Spring is a beautiful season for most as the weather warms up, bringing forth new green on once dormant trees and buds begin to blossom on the fruit trees. The smell of wattle wafts through the evening air and new runners start to emerge to attempt to reduce the winter stomach spread. But for me and many who suffer asthma and hayfever, Spring is a scourge. The recent hazard reduction burn-off of the undergrowth that happened in the Warragamba area left Glenmore Park wreathed in smoke and many residents told me of their afflictions that forced most of them to stay indoors. Some were even fearful that there were bushfires about. I don’t read much of the local papers so I can’t say whether or not the burning off was advertised to residents but I can say that I didn’t know about it. We as a parish try to keep our community informed of what is happening in our church and suburb but I am always amazed how little we know about what is happening in the area generally. When developments happen, we are all left guessing what is being developed or built. Unless you read the Glenmore Gazette you would be at
a loss to know what is going on in Glenmore Park. Jesus said, “When evening comes, you say, ‘It will be fair weather, for the sky is red,’ and in the morning, ‘Today it will be stormy, for the sky is red and overcast.’ You know how to interpret the appearance of the sky, but you cannot interpret the signs of the times” (Matt 16:2-4) My Mum had a saying, “Red sky at night shepherd’s delight. Red sky at morning shepherd’s warning.” She often quoted this when she was predicting the weather. Our Lord advised the people of His time to perceive the warning signs around them to observe what God was trying to tell them about the way they lived their lives. There are many Doomsday prophets who frequently predict Armageddon based on the prevalence of wars and natural disasters. When people ask me about the End Times, I suggest that they take each day as an opportunity to advance the Coming of Christ by doing acts of kindness because the signs of our own mortality are before us every day.

AROUND THE SCHOOLS
We all get to shine at Regentville Public School
Term 3 is the season for Creative Arts at Regentville Public School, and a large proportion of the student community are actively involved. Drama and Dance groups have strutted their stuff at the Western Sydney Region Drama Festival and the Nepean Blue Mountains Dance Festivals, both held at the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre. At the Penrith Valley Performing Arts Festival these talented actors and dancers were joined by the beautiful voices of both the Junior and Senior Choirs, while the students in the band joined their friends from other local primary and high schools in the combined schools band, to get the show on the road. All in all nearly two hundred students flexed their creative muscles at public festivals, to great acclaim. Not to be outdone, the rest of the school population joined in for “Regentville Rocks!” our annual celebration of learning and the Arts. Led by their talented teachers, every student from the littlest Kindergarten child to our Stage Three leaders lent a hand with singing, dancing and movement and theatre, and all under the watchful eyes of their enthusiastic family members. What a joy to see the entire school community involved in another great show. While festival season is over our sporting stars continue to shine in their various fields: Charging ahead in knockout soccer, netball and basketball; at the front of the field in cross country and athletics. Many students have achieved such success that they have been called upon to represent the school and the district. For all of their achievements whether it be on the sporting field or on the stage, Regentville students have made the most of every opportunity they have to shine, and we could not shine more brightly!
Local Schools Receive Flashing Lights Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP today announced flashing lights will be installed to increase school zone pedestrian safety at Banks Public School www.glenmoregazette.com.au
and Glenmore Park High School, Glenmore Park Public School and Caroline Chisholm College. “I’m very pleased to announce that these schools in Mulgoa will be among the first to receive flashing lights in the start of the NSW Government’s $13 million election commitment to fast track the installation of flashing lights,” said Tanya Davies. “Flashing lights help ensure motorists are warned that they are travelling in a school zone and need to slow down. “The lights operate automatically when school zone 40km/h speed limits are in force and increase drivers’ awareness of school zones. “Flashing lights have been shown to slow motorists by an average of seven kilometres an hour when they enter a school zone. “The lights will operate between 8am and 9.30am and 2.30pm and 4pm on school days during term time.” Mrs Davies said work on the next 54 school zones to receive flashing lights in NSW would begin in late October and be completed by the end of November. Flashing lights are linked to a central computer system which operates lights across the state, Mrs Davies said. “The lights use LED (light-emitting diode) technology which provides brighter and energy efficient light. “By the end of 2011 there will be more than 740 flashing light school zones across the state covering more than 900 schools. “This is more than a quarter of all the schools in NSW.” The full list of installed sites is available on the RTA website, and is regularly updated. Sites are chosen based on set criteria which include traffic and pedestrian volumes, crash history and risk, speed limits, the road environment and visibility. Flashing lights are one component of the RTA’s road safety program. Other measures include marked foot crossings, dragon’s teeth markings, traffic lights and pedestrian refuges.
Furry Friends make Learning Fun Learning about living things can be a very interesting when you have 20 , two day old ducking’s running around in your classroom. Kindergarten have been learning about how living things October 2011
grow and change as a part of their Human Society and its Environment unit this Term. This week 20 duck eggs arrived in an incubator and hatched into ducking’s in 48 hours. The life cycle is now a major part of their learning generating lots of valuable first hand learning experiences. Kinders enjoyed
giving them their first taste of water on Friday and learning how to handle the animals carefully. “The whole school is a buzz with our new arrivals, who will stay until the end of the school term.” Photo : Kinder students - Molly, Jack & Georgia

Bushfire Danger Period The statutory Bush Fire Danger Period runs from October 1st to March 31st, however it may vary due to local conditions. If you are planning to light a fire in the open during this time, you will need a permit. Depending on the type of fire, a permit may be required all year round or only during the Bush Fire Danger Period. For example, a Fire Permit is required at all times if a fire is likely to be dangerous to a building.
Grass Fires
The recent rain experienced across many parts of New South Wales has been welcome – but it’s also brought an unwelcome threat for many people. The rain has lead to increased grass growth across many areas and as this grass begins to dry out, there’s an increased risk of grass fires. Grass fires can be especially dangerous because they can start quickly and spread rapidly, catching people offguard. They can be very hot and produce large amounts of heat which can kill anyone caught out in the open.

National Nurse’s Day On Friday 14th October 2011 we plan to celebrate National Nurse’s Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. It is great to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our veterinary nurses. The nurses do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, operate the in house laboratory equipment, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital. Without the veterinary nurses, I would not be able to do my job as a veterinarian. We plan to celebrate by having a long lunch with enough food to feed an army. We have 4 nurses at the hospital, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital. Belinda - Practice Manager My husband and I are expecting again Mid December, and our two boys are excited about having a new baby girl in the family. I am expecting to return back on a part time basis from April 2012. I started out my career in Veterinary Nursing in 2004 and graduated in 2006. I have been working part time at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital since February 2010 and have recently been promoted to Practice Manager. The clients here are by far the best, their care and compassion for their pets is amazing and this makes our job so much more satisfying when we can provide the best care. Veterinary Nursing has always been my 'dream job' and I love every minute of it. I love getting to know our clients and their pets as well, and enjoy seeing the happy endings
when patients are discharged from hospital. My furry family consists of a 3 legged boxer x cattle dog named Milo, a Staffordshire x named Zada & a very naughty cat named Cricket. Carly - Nurse I live with my husband and we have 2 dogs, a male bull terrier named Hemi and a female German Shepherd, named Jessie. I also have a Bearded Dragon named Sticky. We are also expecting the arrival of our first baby at the start of December. I’ll be going on maternity leave at the end of November for about a year, and even though I’m looking forward to the huge change in my life I will miss my work, both the girls I’ve been working with and the lovely clients I have come to know over the past year. Ever since I can remember I’ve wanted to work with animals, so I went straight to TAFE to study vet nursing, I have worked in a few different vet clinics in the lower mountains and did volunteer work at the Australian reptile park. I have been getting to know our clients and find that they love and care for their pets as much as I do. Eden - Nurse I have a cat named Angus (after Angus Young) and a young border collie named Macca. After I finished highschool I did 2 years of university where I studied a Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Bioscience. I will graduate from TAFE veterinary nursing in December this year. I love horses and compete regularly with the Pony Club. I previously worked as a trail guide in Megalong Valley and I have also volunteered for the Riding for the Disabled Association. I have also volunteered at Taronga Zoo working in the carnivore unit. In my spare time
I go horse riding or do gardening. Since starting at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital I completed a short dog and cat grooming course, I now am able to provide our clients with this service. I enjoy making their pet’s look and feel good. Trent – Kennel Hand I am currently studying at University of Western Sydney, completing a Bachelor of Science in Nutrition and Food, while also working two days a week at the veterinary hospital. To help out I assist the nurses and vet, complete general cleaning duties and general maintenance duties along with doing all the hydrobath’s on Saturday mornings. Erica - Nurse I am the newest addition to the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital family and I will be taking over from Carly while she is on maternity leave. I have been a veterinary nurse for 24 years so as you can tell it’s a real passion of mine. I am also in the process of completing a certificate IV in Training and Assessment which will give me a qualification as a TAFE teacher where I will be able to teach veterinary nurse trainees for their Veterinary Nurse Certificate. Felines are a major passion for me, I travel with Whiskas to all the Royal shows around Australia. I have two dogs, Chopper a Staffordshire and Kingston a Moodle. Two cats, Lollie and Geoffrey and will be adopting a Burmese kitten in December. I also have a 42 year old Galah named Pete! I look forward to meeting all the clients and their wonderful pets. Pop in and meet the team!
