Mulgoa Businesses Supported To Prepare For Upcoming Plastic Bans

June.

“These single-use plastic bans are just the beginning of a major move away from plastic in NSW, and we’re making sure businesses have the information they need to stop using plastics and start using environmentally friendly options,” Mrs Davies said.

The NRA has launched a free hotline (1800 844 946) to offer businesses and community organisations advice on the single-use plastic bans.

POSITION VACANT

Telesales ConsultantNewspaper Advertising

In this position, you will prospect for new customers by cold calling, using leads, or other means of generating interest from potential customers. Developing and maintaining relationships with current customers across several publications both in an inbound and outbound capacity is critical.

The ideal candidate will have strong ties to the area and a knowledge of local business. A willingness to support our communities and highlight the value of local newspapers to our region’s future is essential.

Businesses in the Mulgoa electorate are being supported to get ready for the 1 November single-use plastic ban, thanks to a massive retailer education campaign launched by the NSW Government.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said to ensure small businesses are ready for the changes this year, the NSW Government engaged the National Retail Association (NRA) to deliver a comprehensive retailer education campaign.

On behalf of the NSW Government, the NRA has already delivered support to more than 23,000 businesses and retailers, visited more than 560 retail precincts around the state, and delivered information in 15 different languages.

“Thanks to this campaign, local businesses are on the front foot, and some are already making the change to more environmentally friendly products,” Mrs Davies said.

“We farewelled single-use plastic shopping bags in June and now it’s goodbye to single-use plastic straws, plates, cutlery and a whole lot more as we move NSW towards a circular economy and a more sustainable future.”

Getting rid of single-use plastic items will make a huge difference to the environment. Single-use plastic items and packaging make up 60 per cent of all litter in NSW, and the bans will prevent almost 2.7 billion items of plastic litter from entering the environment in NSW over the next 20 years.

From November, the NSW Government is banning single-use items including: • plastic straws, stirrers, cutlery, plates, bowls and cotton buds

• food ware and cups made from expanded polystyrene

• rinse-off personal care products containing plastic microbeads.

This comes after lightweight single-use plastic bags were banned in NSW from 1

The NSW Government has confirmed that once operational, the WestConnex M4-M5 Link project will be officially referred to as extensions of the M4 and M8 motorways.

Once complete, the 7.5 kilometre underground mega tunnels will connect the two motorways, providing a seamless link between Haberfield and St Peters and cutting travel times by up to 40 minutes between Western Sydney and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport.

Minister for Metropolitan Roads Natalie Ward said the operational names aligned with the NSW motorways’ numbering system, making it easier for motorists travelling across the broader network.

“We are in the final stages of one of the most significant road infrastructure projects ever undertaken in Australia,” Ms Ward said.

“Naming the tunnels the M4 and M8 motorways will help motorists join the dots on the new and improved network when the tunnels open next year.

“Once complete, the tunnels will significantly improve connections between west and southwest Sydney, reducing travel times into the city for Western Sydney residents.

“This is all about making a real difference to people’s daily lives, with our Government committed to providing them with the transport connections they need to move quickly and safely across our city.”

The new link between the M4 and the M8 is expected to open in early 2023 and will connect to the Rozelle Interchange at the end of 2023, marking the completion of Australia’s largest road infrastructure project, WestConnex.

The project will also include future links to the Western Harbour Tunnel, Sydney Gateway and the M6, to better connect communities across the city and improve freight routes.

Council Reaches Milestone With Latest Playspace Upgrade

Nindi Crescent playspace in Glenmore Park has received an exciting upgrade with a “Going on a Bear Hunt” themed transformation.

The new playspace design was developed in close consultation with the local community and includes hidden bears throughout the reserve for children to find, climbing equipment, swings, a slide, and an accessible multi-play unit.

The upgrade marks the halfway point of Council’s commitment to upgrade 40 playspaces over a five-year period between 2019-2024, with 20 playspaces now renewed across the Local Government Area.

Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said it was heart-warming to see local families and children enjoying the improved playspaces.

“It is important to have safe, modern and inclusive recreation spaces across our City which give young people and families the opportunity to get outside, connect and have fun,” Cr Hitchen.

Additional features of the upgrade include seating, landscaping, and a new pathway to allow for better access to the playspace. A shade sail will also be installed as part of a Council program to improve shade facilities at 90 playspaces, which is a key component of the Cooling the City Strategy.

Penrith City Council invested $80,000 toward the Nindi Crescent playspace upgrade through its ongoing asset renewal program, with the NSW Government contributing an additional $75,000 through the Everyone Can Play grant.

Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies MP said through the Everyone Can Play grant, the NSW Government is helping to renew, renovate and build inclusive playspaces to ensure that people of all ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds can play.

These playspaces were identified through Council’s Sport and Recreation Strategy which is a 15-year road map for the future provision of sport, play, recreation and open space facilities across our City.

Charities Unite for Peyton Need a Real Gardener?

In an amazing show of compassion and support, a Glenmore Park family has received the donation of a new vehicle on 24th August, to assist them with their day to day living.

Nichelle Ritchie’s daughter, Peyton Wilson, has a disorder known as Chromosome 6 Ring and is one of twenty-four documented cases around the world. The new Hyundai Staria will now aid the family in taking Peyton to her much-needed medical appointments and any visits to the hospital.

The Great Walk Foundation and WestCare Community Services are the local charities that came together to present Peyton and her family with the new van.

“We would really like to thank Greg Bond, Jonathan Green from The Great Walk Foundation, Andrew Paech from WestCare Community Services and Gavin Swift for their kind donation” said Nichelle Ritchie to the Glenmore Gazette.

The addition of the van is a life-changing experience for the local family.

“Having a new vehicle to assist Peyton means a lot to us. We can safely get Peyton to and from appointments and emergency room visits. We will have a vehicle that is easily modified for her wheelchair. It has air conditioning with extra vents right above Peyton’s seat, so we can keep her cool in Summer so that there is less risk of her having seizures.

“Even going on family outings means that we have enough space for everything we need” she replied.

“Essentially, we are now a two-car family. We don’t have to co-ordinate the girls getting up early to take Dad to work and trying to work appointments around picking Dad up from work,” said a relieved Nichelle.

Nichelle continues to work tirelessly to raise funds to assist with Peyton’s care.

“We will be holding a ticketed fundraising event at Coffee Club Glenmore Park in October. It will be in the evening with grazing platters and dinner included. There will be drag bingo, live auction as well as lucky door prizes. Raffle tickets will go on sale very soon with prizes to be won” she ended.

Every Street has a Story

Glenmore Park filmmaker Ronnie Riskalla is one step closer to sharing his second feature film, Streets of Colour, with the world.

Streets of Colour was filmed in Western Sydney and tells the story of Tez, a 23-year-old soon to be father who is blamed for the death of his best friend Akachi in a racist street fight.

Riskalla is currently in negotiations with distributors in Europe and locally for the release of the film.

“We are all excited and will have more information soon on the release dates for Streets of Colour. The distributors work out the best time to release the film within their marketing strategy. We are hoping later in the year. Realistically, it’s most likely looking like early next year” explained Ronnie to the Glenmore Gazette.

The film has already been well received by early audiences.

“We had a big cast and crew screening back in July. The film was received quite well, although it was a somewhat bias crowd. The cast and crew were allowed a plus one guest and their seemed to be positive feedback” he said.

“The film touched many people, as its quite an emotional journey. It seems that the story resonated, bringing some to tears. As a storyteller, this was great to hear” Ronnie continued.

What has he enjoyed most about making the film?

“I love every stage of making the film, it’s what I was born to do. Getting a film made on a micro budget is almost impossible but making a film that has a personal and powerful message is special. Inspiring and changing the world, one film at a time. Completing the film after nearly 6 years, that goal is what it’s all about” he smiled.

Streets of Colour will have limited screenings with Q & A sessions across Sydney/Greater Sydney as well as most major cities across the country.

Stay up to date with the film on its Facebook and Instagram pages.

What’s on the Menu?

Scott Rutkowski is a proud local. His food reviews have been a big hit online and the number of his supporters continues to grow.

He has been a ‘foodie’ for over 20 years since he was in his late teens.

“I’m passionate about food and enjoy going out and being social. My reviews are from a non-visual perspective, as I have no vision at all and have been blind since birth.

NDIS have helped through providing support workers with getting out and about. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to get out as often. The community has always been there for me. I see this as a way to give back to the community” he said.

Scott’s food reviews for Western Sydney Dining Out and About have been popular with audiences. Having already visited 30-40 local cafes and restaurants over the years, his knowledge and experience is amazing.

“I enjoy the whole experience of dining out. The atmosphere. The noise, as long as it’s not too loud. The people that you’re with. Good customer service that brings you back again. And of course, the food” Scott replied.

So, what is Scott’s favourite dish you may ask?

“That’s a hard question. If I had to choose, it would be a combination of wraps, sushi, seafood, or burgers. Although, I do have a sesame allergy” he stated.

Check out Scott’s food review in this edition. Bon appétit!

Chronic Back Pain - There Is A Real Solution!

Most people have lower back pain at some point in their lives. Often it disappears after mild anti-inflammatory medication, a little rest, or light massage. But sometimes it stays around.

This chronic (long lasting) form of back pain at best can be an annoying ache that’s a bit better when you warm up, but always there in the background. At worst, it can be a constant debilitating pain. Often pain radiates down into the buttock and legs (known as sciatica) or leads to strange, tingling or even loss of feeling down an affected leg, sometimes to the tips of the toes. This type of chronic back problem can stop you working, playing, sleeping, eating, thinking, and can leave you frustrated especially when you can’t get treatment to resolve the issue.

There are many individual causes that can lead to chronic back pain but (in most instances) one major factor sustains the cycle of pain. Here’s how it happens: Often after simple overuse or other injury, the back muscles in the affected area shorten (lock in) and literally swell with toxin-filled fluids that have leaked from injured cells and cause the muscles and nerves in the affected area to become inflamed and painful. The swelling reduces blood and lymph flow and this locks in the cycle of inflammation. Though exercise often brings temporary relief, in some cases it may worsen the problem long-term.

In most cases the solution is quite simple. Remove the inflammatory fluid and literally lengthen the affected back muscles so that tissue function normalises, and the spine adopts

at normal position. When we do this, in most cases chronic back pain goes completely, even in many long-standing cases. The same is true for many chronic shoulder and knee complaints. If you’d like to know more, call Andreas 0418 166269.

James Morrison October Concert

On Sunday 30 October 2022, trumpet maestro James Morrison will visit Penrith for one monumental afternoon of music.

Morrison said he is excited to return to Penrith after an absence of nearly 10 years.

“I have performed in concert venues and theatres throughout the world, but this will be my very first on the edge of a lake and what better place than the Sydney International Regatta Centre,” Mr Morrison said.

Joining Morrison on stage will be his quartet including sons William on guitar, and Harry on double bass, and Patrick Danao on drums.

Together, the James Morrison Quartet have taken the international music scene by storm, performing at major festivals such as BBC Proms with superstar Dianne Reeves, Melbourne International Jazz Festival with Patti Austin, and performing at famous jazz venues including Ronnie Scott's in London.

In what he is describing as an intimate afternoon of jazz, Mr Morrison's show will comprise of classic jazz based on styles and acts such as Louis Armstrong, Bosso Nova, Stan Getz, Be-Bop and much more.

“I want everyone to enjoy the performance” he said.

“Firstly, I'm not there to educate anyone about jazz; I really love the music, and what it does and how it makes me feel and I want everyone to feel that, and we can all enjoy it together.”

When asked about what audiences can expect, Mr Morrison replied “Expect to have a good time.”

Although COVID restrictions in recent years has put a pause on touring, Mr Morrison recently returned from a tour of Europe saying it’s great to be on the road again making music.

In addition to performing, Mr Morrison spends much of his time in education conducting master classes and workshops sharing his love and knowledge for music education.

As well as performing with his quartet Morrison will join the students and staff of St Pauls Grammar and Nepean High for special performances in the early afternoon.

“The students are putting a lot of energy into preparing their pieces and I am looking forward to working with them and sharing the stage for an afternoon of fantastic entertainment.”

Teaching Boys to Respect Women

We live in an epidemic of violence against women, with one woman losing her life at the hands of a male partner or expartner every week in Australia. Violence starts with disrespect. When we excuse disrespect, it can escalate to aggression and abuse. Studies show that disrespectful attitudes take root in childhood. As parents, you can help to break this cycle.

Disrespect looks like pressuring someone to do something they don’t want to do or treating someone as though they are not as important as you. Disrespect can be based on differences between people such as gender, sexuality, skin colour, cultural heritage, age, disability, or religion.

Some things adults say unintentionally teach children that disrespect is OK in certain situations. Self-reflection is the first step. It is helpful to be aware of common excuses made for aggressive or disrespectful behaviour in boys:

• Downplaying the behaviour, e.g. “it wasn’t that bad”, “he was just joking”

• Accepting aggression as part of being a boy, e.g. “boys will be boys”

• Blaming girls for being treated with disrespect, e.g. “it takes two to tango”

Be prepared to talk to boys about respect early and often. Everyday situations are opportune moments for life-changing conversations. For example, you can discuss what an insult like, “you throw like a girl” says about boys and girls. You can also discuss examples from television or movies.

Ask questions about what your boys think and feel about disrespect and gender equality. Conversation starters might include, “do you notice any differences in how girls and boys are treated at school?” or “Have you ever heard a boy say something to a girl that you didn’t agree with?”

Support empathy by modelling this yourself. If you notice your child acting out, acknowledge their perspective AND reinforce appropriate behaviour, e.g. “I know you were frustrated, but we treat everyone with respect no matter what.” Prompt your child to understand another person’s perspective with questions like, “how would you feel if you were treated like that?”

You can create a safer future for women and girls by stopping disrespect at the start.

Basketball Blooms in Glenmore Park

The Penrith and Districts Basketball Association (PDBA) 2022/2023 Summer season begins this month and Glenmore Park Basketball Club are ready to take the court.

Beginning on 7th and 8th October, the club continues to grow, with over 250 players registered to play this season.

2023 marks an important milestone in the club’s history. Forming in October 1998, Glenmore Park Basketball Club will be celebrating it’s 25th year in the local competition.

“In 2023, the club will celebrate it’s 25th Anniversary! We are very much looking forward to celebrating this amazing milestone with our players and families” said Kathleen Burke, Club Secretary of Glenmore Park Basketball Club.

With the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup underway in Sydney, the popularity of basketball in this country is sky high.

“We would love to see more girls playing basketball. With the Women’s World Cup being held in Australia, we are hoping this inspires more girls to join the sport” she smiled.

The recently completed Winter season was the best yet for the club, breaking records in the process.

“It was the club’s most successful season, with 13 teams making the semi-finals and 7 progressing to the grand final. We were able to return to the normal pre-COVID format including finals. It was wonderful to see so many kids enjoying their games each week throughout the competition” Kathleen stated.

If you would like to learn more about the club, visit their website at www.glenmoreparkbasketball. com or search ‘Glenmore Park Basketball Club’ on Facebook.

Glenmore Park’s Anthony Boros has received the Public School Parent of the Year Award at the 2022 Minister’s and Secretary’s Awards for Excellence, held at Sydney Town Hall last month. The award is presented to parents, guardians and caregivers who have made a significant contribution to their local NSW public school community.

Mr Boros, who is the P&C President of Regentville Public School, was nominated for the award by Sandra Riches, earlier this year.

“It’s incredibly humbling to receive the recognition, however, as a passionate advocate for volunteering, I can wholeheartedly say that we don’t sign up as volunteers for any accolade or recognition. The additional workload, stress and time constraints aren’t dwelt upon, despite working full-time with a household of 5 school-aged children” explained Anthony.

“Although this award bears my name, and it was I who accepted it on-stage, I will absolutely share this recognition with my incredible wife Cherie, without whom, many of the amazing things we’ve achieved for our community, our school and the children within, would simply not have happened!” he continued.

He is a great advocate for the public school system and a role model to many. “I am passionate about promoting and leading the Regentville Public School P&C, as we are a fantastic school with an extremely dedicated faculty of teachers and support staff. I have had lots of memorable moments in the past 11 years that I have been associated with the school” he said.

Anthony encourages fellow parents and carers to volunteer for their schools and join their local P&C’s, “Sign up and volunteer! I promise you that we are one of the most fun P&C’s of any school in the district. We have a strong, dedicated group of parents on our executive team, and we enjoy an excellent working relationship with school leadership”.

The Valley JuncTion Shop 24/25 caddens corner, caddens

The experience at The Valley Junction was exceptional and the staff were very attentive and extremely helpful. They have a large menu and what impressed me was the selection of menu options. They also cater for those of us with allergies, who may have special dietary requirements.

Having read the menu before arriving at The Valley Junction, I was keen to try the Yellow Mellow Juice which consisted of orange, pineapple, and mango. This juice had a very fresh clean taste, and the flavours were exquisite. I was not aware that you can build your own juice, which is what Katie (Support Worker) did and she really enjoyed her juice also.

I wanted to try the Waffle Fries and wow, amazing. The Waffle Fries were crisp, and each were a different shape. These fries should be shared.

I chose the classic Wagyu Beef Burger for my main course. The beef burger contained Wagyu patty, cheese, cos lettuce, tomato, caramelised onion, bacon, fried egg, BBQ sauce and onion rings with chips on the side. This burger was flavourful, the cheese, bacon beef and sauce all went together, and every mouthful was different.

Katie really enjoyed the Salmon Bagel which consisted of smoked salmon, spinach leaves, ricotta cheese, Spanish onion, and caper berries.

I was tempted to try one of the iced lattes however, after having eaten most of our order, I was full.

In conclusion, The Valley Junction really cared about making customer’s feel welcome and at home. Vinnie and his staff really made the experience the best it could be, and I have no hesitation in giving The Valley Junction a ten out of ten.

I highly recommend The Valley Junction for those looking for a quiet cafe to eat at. You will not be disappointed. The atmosphere really suited the cafe, and the selection of music was enjoyable. Thanks, team, for such a wonderful experience.

It is great to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our veterinary nurses. The nurses do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital. Without the veterinary nurses, we would not be able to do our job as veterinarians.

We will be celebrating by having a long lunch on the day, which is hard to do in a busy veterinary hospital.

We have 24 nurses at the hospital, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital.

Kitten Adoption. Adopt a Friend for Life!

Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens.

We have 2 lovely kittens ready for adoption now!

The kittens are 21 weeks old. They are both males. One white and one ginger tabby.

They have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together.

Both kittens have a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms

and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms.

When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months.

Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given.

If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit.

Endurance. Faithful. Astute. These are three common ways people have described Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. Endurance because her reign was longer than any other British monarch. It wasn’t just the gift of age she possessed, but the commitment to keep serving her country. This leads to the second way people have described QEII - faithful. She had an enormous sense of duty: duty to her nation, to her family and to the monarchy itself. Thirdly, many of those who reported to her spoke of her astute nature. This was demonstrated in the way she was always across the issues to be discussed. No matter how complex, she always had a good grasp of the issues. Today however, I want to mention one more way of describing QEII-devoted.

Many have spoken of her deep devotion to God. She rarely spoke of this before the year 2000, but since then she has been more open about it. She was able to defend the faith because she was a woman of faith. Despite increasing secularism, she spoke openly of her faith in Christ and the place of religion in our modern world. In her Silver Jubilee speech in 1977 she said, “When I was 21, I pledged my life to the service of our people and asked for God’s help to make that vow. Although that vow was made in my salad days, when I was green in judgment, I do not regret or retract one word of it”.

In 1974, the late Queen Elizabeth II visited the island of New Britain in Papua New Guinea where I grew up. Pot-holed roads were repaired and decorated. The sounds of traditional singing and dancing filled the air. Gifts befitting a queen were prepared. There were military marching bands. Airforce flyovers. Flags flying proudly.

Throngs of people turned out at every opportunity to see her. They loved her. What a life!

At one of these events, Queen Elizabeth was just one metre away from me! I must be honest, the window of her vehicle was closed as it came past me, but I recall feeling that I was close enough to touch her.

Over the past days, those who were close to the Queen have been sharing in the media about what made the Queen tick behind the scenes the secret to such a profound and great life. A life almost universally attractive. A life drawing respect from presidents and village people alike. A life able to bring peace and to make people feel that all is well with the world even amidst its challenges.

What a legacy! Arguably the greatest person of our time.

Someone close to the Queen spoke of her trusting and personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Whatever our views on Christian faith, those close to Queen Elizabeth II speak of her faith as the secret to her extraordinary life.

We mightn’t be royalty, but this begs the question: How will we live our own lives well? What will empower us to find peace, be happy, and leave a legacy that matters?

Undeniably, the past month has been a difficult one for many.

Tragically, for the families and friends of the five youths whose lives were cut short in a single vehicle crash at Buxton; where nearby communities rallied together in a show of support and strength as those families and friends faced the unimaginable.

And historically, the entire world mourned the passing of Her Majesty, The Queen. Aged 96 she was the longest-reigning monarch in British history. Serving the Commonwealth for over 70 years was just as amazing as the life she led. Thank you, Queen Elizabeth II for all that you did. It is hard to imagine a world without her.

This month, you’ll find an extra special treat with guest food reviewer Scott in our newest column ‘Food 4 Thought’ we’re sure it will tickle your taste buds!

We’ve been delivering direct to letterboxes for almost 25 years and counting. It’s your support of the businesses that advertise, that keeps us landing in letterboxes. A big HI-FIVE from us and them; to think we’re still going strong all these years later. Hats off to YOU!

Enjoy your community news! Remember, all we have is now.
