“Every student deserves to learn in an inspiring learning space, even the smallest of changes such as a coat of paint or laying carpet does contribute to a positive learning experience,” Ms Mitchell said.

Penrith City Council is pleased with the uptake of the STEM Community Partnerships Project (STEM CPP), a program designed to inspire and extend youngStudentsminds.from 12 local high schools are currently participating in the program, a partnership with CSIRO, Australia’s national science agency. The program connects Year 9 and 10 students with Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) industry professionals as they tackle inquiry-based projects and develop solutions for real-world challenges.

STEM Project Encourages Young People To Think Outside The Box

This builds on the $9.1 billion invested in projects delivered since 2017, a program of $17.7 billion in public education infrastructure.

The pair took part in the STEM CPP in 2021 working with their peers to research how the use of genetically modified plants could reduce heat stress in certain areas, and agreed it was “a really good learning opportunity”.“It’spractical – it gives you good insight as to the design and planning aspects of projects, and how to think outside the box,” RyanBradley, said. who plans to study civil engineering, said: “We got to see the work of students from two other schools whose projects were focused on water – it was great to hear their ideas and learn how to best develop and pitch our own ideas.”

Mr Coure said this extra funding adds to the $1.2 million the NSW Government has already invested into 50 community-led initiatives to help reduce social isolation among“Seniorsseniors.areintegral to our communities and we appreciate the contributions they have made and continue to make,” Mr Coure“Thatsaid.is why we need to ensure they are empowered to continue being active participants in community life, no matter who they are or what language they speak.”

The program is part of CSIRO’s Generation STEM initiative, made possible through a $25 million endowment from the NSW Government to the Science and Industry Endowment Fund. Generation STEM aims to upskill students and meet the growing need for a STEM-focused workforce.

At the local level, teachers and students are starting to meet with their mentors from nearby businesses and organisations to begin work on the projects the students will present at a showcase event later in the year.Participating students from Glenmore Park High School recently visited the Western Sydney International (WSI) Experience Centre at Badgerys Creek before returning to school for a presentation from their mentor, Council’s Sustainability Education Officer, Andrew Hewson.

Applications are open until 11.59pm on Monday September 19. For more information and to apply, please visit, www.facs.nsw.gov.au/seniorsgrants.

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said this investment in school maintenance will make up the NSW Government $2.2 billion investment over the next four years.

Minister for Education and Early Learning Sarah Mitchell said she was pleased the NSW Government was not just investing in new and upgraded schools, but in maintaining schools across the state.

Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said the number of schools choosing to take part in 2022 reflected the community’s shared desire to think innovatively and advance our knowledge for a better future.

Minister for Seniors Mark Coure said a total of $600,000 is available through the Reducing Social Isolation for Seniors Grants Program to support initiatives, which play an important role in keeping seniors connected to their local community.

“No one likes to be alone or feel disconnected from their community, especially not our seniors,” Mr Coure said. “This funding is about helping foster environments where people can come together, meet new people and enjoy themselves in their local community.”

Every school in Mulgoa is set to benefit from the NSW Government’s $1.2 billion investment for planned maintenance from the 2022/23 NSW Budget funding. This will include painting, fencing and gate repairs, floor renewal, window and door repairs, roof replacements and sewage repairs and replacements.

“It is fantastic that we have 12 local schools, spread right across the City, seeing value in a program that will develop the knowledge of our students and create future learning and career pathways for them in vital fields of STEM,” Cr Hitchen said.“We know Penrith is on the cusp of great change and with growing investment in our City comes better health, education, research and manufacturing opportunities – that is where these students will rise and be our next leaders in their areas of expertise,” she said.

“One thing I used to say to people is if you have the flu, you go to the doctor because you can see that you’re sick. Why aren’t we going to the doctor if we aren’t feeling the best mentally? Is it because we can’t see it, or others can’t see that we are sick? It stresses the importance on really taking care of our minds and to reach out to people if we are struggling. Without support networks, life in challenging times becomes very hard. Creating awareness can ease the hardships that we all go through, big, or small. We can’t row our boats alone” he ended. Next month: What causes colon cell damage/death? Can we stop this?

“I am so pleased to see construction is now underway for the Ched Towns Reserve amenities building in Glenmore Park. The NSW Government together with Penrith City Council and Glenmore Park Brumbies Junior Rugby League Football Club have committed to create this facility for the community to enjoy a high-quality sports infrastructure” Mrs Davies said.

Ulcerative Colitis - What Exactly Is It?

3. The affected local area becomes red and swollen

2. In an attempt to remedy things, the damaged/dying epithelial cells release distress hormones to activate local immune responses increasing local blood flow, attracting, and activating various immune cells

4. If cell deaths continue, the mucosa takes on a finely granular look, and becomes friable (breaks easily); normal vascular pattern is lost

5. Eventually scattered haemorrhagic areas appear

3. The muscularis: muscle-cell-layer contracts rhythmically to move colon contents

6. Breakdown of the intestinal epithelial barrier leads bacteria and other materials to enter tissues. This further activates immune cells perpetuating intestinal inflammation

The normal colon wall consists of four main layers (inner to outer):1.The mucosa: lining cells

7. Finally, puss producing mucosal ulcers appear (between areas of normal tissue), characteristic of severe disease

The disease process in UC:

1. Something initiates damage to and death of localized areas of colonic epithelial lining cells

2. The submucosa: connective tissue, nerves, blood/lymph vessels, immune cells

3. Left sided colitis – rectum, sigmoid and descending colon

“The new amenities block will benefit local sporting groups and the community by providing a modernised and purpose-built facility”.

The NSW Government recognises the critical role local sport infrastructure plays in keeping communities healthy, active, and connected.TheNSW

Government has committed $50 million to the Greater Cities Sport Facility Fund over two-years, supporting the development of well-designed and utilised new and improved sport infrastructure projects that can directly impact and support participation and performance opportunities in sports at all levels.

4. Serosa: external layer of connective tissue around the colon UC generally affects the mucosa and submucosa, the muscularis in severe disease. Sharp borders exist between normal and affected (ulcerated) tissue.

1. Ulcerative proctitis – anus and rectum only

Backing the Brumbies with New Sport Infrastructure

Construction is now underway at Ched Towns Reserve in Glenmore Park for a new amenities building. This project is being powered by the NSW Government, which is committed to help create spaces and facilities that enable communities to enjoy and take part in sport.Through the Greater Sydney Sports Facility Fund, the NSW Government has funded over $1.66 million to this important project. In addition, the project received funding from both Penrith City Council contributing $565,000 and the local Glenmore Park Brumbies Junior League Football Club contributing an additional $10,000 for a complete knockdown and rebuild of the amenities block.

2. Proctosigmoiditis – rectum and sigmoid colon

83,500 Australians suffer Ulcerative Colitis (UC). Patients are most frequently diagnosed at ages 15-35 and 55-70. Patients may be of any race, but likely to be white, Ashkenazi Jews. UC is usually categorized according to the parts of the large bowel involved/inflamed i.e.:

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said that by supporting our local, grass roots sports clubs with the critical infrastructure they need then we can help enable communities that rely on these quality facilities to enjoy and participate in the sports they love.

4. Pancolitis – entire colon Rarely the small intestine that meets the colon may also be inflamed.Symptoms may be limited to rectal bleeding alone. As more of the colon becomes involved, symptoms may include fever, abdominal and rectal pain, cramping, and an urgency to defecate without being able to go. Sufferers have ongoing diarrhoea unrelieved by over-the-counter medications (often also passing blood and puss). Dehydration, weight loss, fatigue, anaemia, vitamin deficiencies, serious malnutrition and bone loss may result. Complications include liver, skin, eye, joint inflammation, perforated colon, increased colon cancer risk; in serious cases toxic megacolon, and possible death.

Local Heroes Recognised

Firefighters from Regentville Rural Fire Service (RFS) have been recognised for their heroic efforts at a local ceremony recently.Withthe ceremony taking place at Evans Theatre at Panthers Penrith, 17 members of Regentville RFS received The National Emergency Medal, with a further 6 members due to receive theirs.

The National Emergency Medal is awarded to persons who rendered sustained or significant service during nationally significant emergencies in Australia. This included the 2019-20 Bushfires.Therewere also 6 members of Regentville RFS awarded the Commissioners Unit Citation for Service. This was for their efforts on the evening of 19/12/19, which saw the loss of life of two firefighters from Horsley Park Rural Fire Service.

The Commissioners Unit Citation for Service is awarded for service of a meritorious nature, or for outstanding actions in relation to fire service duties, administrative leadership, or for exemplary performance of a specific difficult project or task, not involving bravery.“Although our members don’t do what they do for the praise and reward of recognition, many will take these and hold onto them with pride with the knowledge that they made a difference when the state needed them. Some of our members started the fire season over the border in Queensland and chased the fires all the way over the Victorian border” said Jordan Jobson of Regentville RFS.“We couldn’t have done it without the support of our employers, many of whom provided paid leave for our crews to be able to do this and of course the families in the background, being so understanding with the RFS and the commitment our members displayed.“Thelocal community also came together in a massive way with providing donations day after day to the brigade” he ended.

Talk to your child about safety, where they feel safe, with whom they feel safe and what it feels like to be safe. Discuss ‘early warning signs’ (how their body feels) and encourage them to trust their feelings and instincts.

Focus on listening, rather than responding. Being listened to helps children explore their feelings, put ideas into words, brainstorm solutions to their own problems and develop selfconfidence. Your full focus makes them feel respected and helps them know that their thoughts and feelings matter. Be open to talking about all feelings – joy, sadness, fear, anger, worry. Separate behaviour from emotion. Remember: “all feelings are OK, but not all behaviours are OK”. Children build their emotion vocabulary from the adults around them.

National Child Protection Week (4-10 September) is all about the ways that we can all work together to build communities that support children and families. Visit www. napcan.org.au to find out more.

National Child Protection Week: Talking to Children About Safety

The first thing to know is that open communication is more about how you are with your child than the words you use. It’s important that you remain calm during even the most difficult conversations. Big adult emotions can overwhelm children and cause them to ‘shut down’.

In addition to staying calm, approach your child with curiosity and non-judgment. You may feel temptation to lecture but check this urge at the door. During a hard time, would you confide in someone who only points out your faults? Probably not! If children feel judged, they are less likely to come to you with their struggles again. Choose the time and place carefully. A neutral space such as the living room can be ideal. Pick a time when you are not too busy to listen. For some children, they feel more comfortable talking about their emotions during parallel activities like a taking a drive in the car or going for a walk.

FAITH - FOOTHILLS CHURCH

Let’s face it, most of the time the rewards on offer are not enough to persuade us to be consistently ‘good’. Perhaps this is because it takes time and effort which we need to do things that benefit ourselves. To be ‘good’ and to enjoy the best marriages, families, and communities we must somehow be able to express goodness to others simply because it is, in itself, good. For most of us. this requires significant transformation because of the way we connect being good with reward, but we are powerless to change ourselves.

Surely these would all thrive if the people in them could be ‘good’. For the sake of the exercise, let’s simply define this as being loving, kind, and generously helping others achieve their goals and experience wellbeing rather than just pushing for our own benefit.

From early childhood, we are drilled in the experience of expecting reward when we are good and punishment when we are bad. This can lead us to helping or being faithful to our partner, being respectful at round-abouts, and giving to charity only if we get something out of it – if it makes us feel good, brings us approval, or gives us some other benefit.

If everyone in a marriage, family, or community are TAKING from the pot, who will top it up? Unless someone (or everyone at different times) is exercising ‘goodness’ without return, at some point the pot is empty and it is not good! It feels stingy.

Have you ever been deceived? It might have been by a con artist, a scammer or even, more sadly, by someone you knew. The difficulty about being deceived is that you don’t realise it at the time. If you thought you were being deceived, then you wouldn’t have been deceived! It is even worse when you deceive yourself. It is all too easy to believe your own lies about yourself, others, and the world around you. The problem is, of course, that reality has this habit of eventually catching up with you and exposing the sad stupidity of any deception. So, how can you even know if you are being deceived? You need someone who can speak into your world clearly and with authority. That is exactly what Jesus did and continues to do. He spoke the truth about us as human beings and what it means to live in God’s world. People thought he himself was deceived (even deluded) and killed him for it. However, his resurrection from the dead shows that he is the one who can speak truth into a lost world. There are lots of different voices in the world, but the one you can always trust is the voice of Jesus. You can find his voice in the words of the Bible. Grab one today! Minister 10.30am.

As I compile the final touches of the September edition, I look out my window to notice it is a typical Winter’s day, cold, wet and blustery. Nothing at all like the weather we experienced only a week before. I can only hope, like everyone else, that better weather is around the corner as we turn the leaf into Spring.Ialways enjoy Spring, not only for the promise of wonderful weather, but the downward descent to Christmas. What’s not to love about gorgeous Spring days, socialising and the festive lead up to Christmas? This month Monica highlights the importance of child-safety in ‘Parents Corner’ given September plays host to National Child Safety week. While Camille dishes out some ‘Dad’ Jokes in ‘Paws A While’ in view of Fathers Day.Fathers Day is the first Sunday in September, a timely reminder to spend time with or reach out to the Fathers and Fatherly figures in our lives, and remember those taken too soon. Find a minute to reflect on the great moments. Enjoy ‘Your Community News’. Make yourself a priority once in a while. It’s not selfish. It’s necessary.

Due to the impact of COVID-19 on local businesses, and with the health and safety of our extended team in mind, copies at pick up points during this uncertain period may vary. Your Community News will continue as we adapt to these challenging times. All/any events published, will proceed in-line with Government Covid guidelines at the time.
