A Room Full of Empowering Women! International Women’s Day (IWD), which was originally called the International Working Women’s Day, is celebrated on March 8th every year and celebrated differently around the world. They range from a general celebration of respect, appreciation and love towards women to a celebration for women’s economic, political and social achievements. Last month, the women of Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs celebrated the amazing women in their community, from the women who are studying, mothers, grandmothers, hard working women, women who run businesses and women who help run, teach and support the community. “Everyone helped play an important part in celebrating IWD and I thank them all for turning up and supporting such an important event!” said Laura Watson, Director of Jordan Springs and Surrounds Women’s Community Group. Iconic Race Comes To Penrith Penrith is excited to be hosting the Australian Corporate Triathlon at the world-class International Regatta Centre on Sunday 23 April. Teams will swim, ride and run their way to triathlon glory, while raising money and boosting awareness around the link between mental health, exercise and healthy working relationships. Up to 2,000 participants will compete at an Olympic venue, meet industry counterparts, members of the local community and business owners, and enjoy all that Penrith has to offer. Penrith Mayor Cr John Thain said there was nowhere better for this iconic race to be held than Penrith. “This is the first time the event has been held outside of Sydney Harbour and it’s coming to a world-class Olympic facility in the heart of the Adventure Capital of NSW, Cr Thain said. “The International Regatta Centre is an outstanding venue and we’re proud to share it, and our beautiful city, with the rest of Sydney. “Penrith is the place to be and race participants coming from all over the state and in some cases, the country, will get to experience that first hand. We have once in a life time experiences covering everything from adrenaline and adventure to culture, art and history, as well as tonnes of things for the whole family. “The event is open to all businesses and organisations, and I’d love to see some of our local business register teams and show NSW our competitive spirit, he said. FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday

Easter, when given due consideration, leads to the question of human existence. In searching for answers there rises the belief that all existence, with all its happiness despite so much suffering, is for the benefit of someonesomeone not of ourselves. In this awareness, values impinge upon us that lead to acceptance of responsibility for one’s own situation. Stemming from this is the belief in the general disenchantment with society – not only in its structure but with the nature of interpersonal relationships. This results in a search for identity: authentic existence- life that is not hypocritical because life has ultimate significance. Yet life is a paradox: the quest for safety and the quest for danger which are complimentary, because neither is satisfactory within itself. Jesus the Christ realized this when arguing that salvation [wholeness] is found only by first putting everything one has in jeopardy. Deep down our thoughts, our passions, seek for meaning and direction. Suffering, love, hope, despair, are caught up and in reality are a spiritual matter. Christian insight gives strength because at Easter we realise that you cannot have resurrection without the Cross. The joy, the hope of the Christian is that the Resurrection does not negate the Cross, but glorifies it. Hence the Christian response to the question of human existence is complex but the first clue is found in the word ‘understanding’: to listen attentively and be aware of the reality in which we find ourselves. The Christian life calls for complexities of response to

4 April 2017 www.jordanspringsgazette.com.au

the complexities of experience. It is no small wonder that even with the help of the Christ, we shall never complete our search until in death, dying in Faith, the meaning of life will be finally answered. Worship at Easter celebrates this truth. Rev John Hebblewhite

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Feelings All feelings are OK. Some parents tell their children that strong emotions such as anger, frustration, excitement are unacceptable. Even strong emotions are OK. They are normal and all of us will feel them at some time in the day or week. Strong emotions are quite motivating and energising. Think about how much can get done when people get angry about injustice (for example, Vincent Lingiari, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela). So, all feelings are OK, but it is what we do with our emotions that matters. It is not OK to hurt someone else’s feelings or physically hurt others when we are angry. It is also not OK to blame someone else for how we feel, for example “you make me feel angry”. You are having the emotion and taking responsibility for how you feel gives you the power to change it. Blame is a dead end street – it stops you from feeling that you can take the initiative to make changes. So what else do kids need to know about feelings? • You feel feelings in your body. • You can tell how someone else is feeling by looking at their facial expression and body language, hearing what they say, watching what they do, and looking at the situation. You can also ask them how they feel. • Different people can have different feelings about the same thing. This can sometimes cause conflict, but it is important to understand that not everyone will think and feel the same as you. Even the best of friends will disagree. • You can have two different feelings about the same situation. For example, you may be excited about moving to a new school, but worried too. • Your feelings about something can change over time. This happens because over time you gain more knowledge, understanding, experience, and maturity. • To understand others’ behaviour, you have to understand their perspective. Our thoughts, feelings, and actions are linked. If we are thinking negative thoughts, it will lead to feeling sad, angry, or frustrated. These strong negative emotions will affect what we do, our actions. When we learn to understand the nature of our feelings, we gain a greater understanding of ourselves and others.

A Room Full of Empowering Women!

Day was ‘Be Bold for Change’. With this in mind, the theme was also to dress up bold and make a statement, which was what everyone did. It was the second year that Laura Watson has hosted the Jordan Springs IWD event, which is supported by Lendlease. The event had three amazing guest speakers talk about what IWD means to them and why women should be bold. They were Emma Husar MP - local Member of Parliament for Lindsay, Janis Donnelly-Coode – a part time local solicitor who is passionate about increasing awareness about domestic violence and Linda Strickland – founder of Hawkesbury Helping Hands (HHH), a designated charity that has served more than 120,000 plates of food to the community. There was money raised on the night for Girl Guides Australia, thanks to the generosity of the guests, all adding to an enjoyable and successful event. “I’d like to thank those amazing people who made this important event possible. Katie Watson and team at Lendlease, Vanessa Campbell from Vanessa Campbell Consulting, singer Julia Parashko and caterers Nicky and Kitty from Old School Tea Lady. A big thank you to all the local businesses who donated gifts for lucky door prizes as well” said Laura. Laura Watson was also the recipient of the Inaugural Women of Lindsay Woman of the Year Award for 2017 at Emma Husar MP’s International Women’s Day breakfast. This was a welldeserved award for her continuous work in the community. Laura Watson and Emma Husar MP | Image: Mark Lau

With the completion of the 2016-2017 Little Athletics Season now over, Cranebrook Little Athletics Centre have had one of their most successful years yet, with the club continuing to grow from strength to strength in the local area. This season saw the club grow in numbers to 272 athletes, the largest in the club’s 34 year history. This increase in numbers is attributed to the population growth in Jordan Springs. The 2016-2017 season also saw the introduction of their new uniform and they were pleased to see so many of their athletes sporting the new look. This was the first time that the uniform had been updated in over ten years. Cranebrook Little Athletics Centre’s highlights included several of their local athletes competing at different representative levels. There were 55 athletes who competed at the Zone Carnival at St Marys in December last year. 33 of those athletes progressed to the Regional Carnival held at Blacktown Sports Park in February this year, with a further 8 of those athletes then

making the State Championships, which were held last month at Sydney Olympic Park Athletic Centre. The club’s Annual Presentation Night will be held on Saturday 22nd April at Cranebrook High School at Hosking Street in Cranebrook. This will be followed by the Annual General Meeting after the Presentation. Anyone who is interested in joining the 2017-2018 Committee and wanting to help the club grow is encouraged to attend. “Cranebrook Little Athletics Centre is a great family club that caters for young athletes of all abilities. As well as making many friendships within the club, there’s always plenty of fun to be had” said Pam Copland, Club Committee member. The local club caters to girls and boys from their Tiny Tots Age Group of 3 years to their Under 17 Seniors Group of athletes. Information regarding registration for the upcoming 20172018 season will start to be posted from July this year. The next season starts in October and runs through to the start of March next year. For more information about Cranebrook Little Athletics Centre, find them on Facebook or visit their website at www. cranebrooklac.org.au.

Champion Rower Joins The Healthy Body Company

Madison Brown, National Rowing Champion has joined The Healthy Body Company team at Jordan Springs. Madison is a graduate of Western Sydney University, where she was the top of the course in paediatric physiotherapy. Madison has now set her sights on linking her two great passions, rowing and physiotherapy, and is developing a new service – treating the local rowing community. “As an athlete, I have experienced my share of injuries, and my experience with the physiotherapists that helped drive my interest in physiotherapy as a career.” Madison continues to compete at a high level in the sport of rowing. After first trying the sport at her local school, Madison was drawn to the power, endurance and finesse required for the sport. Having claimed a state title in 2015 and two national titles in 2016, Madison continues to strive toward her goal of back to back national titles for 2017.

“The Healthy Body Company team is really supportive of my sporting commitments and I am working hard to balance my work and my sport”. Having been around the sport for so many years, Madison understands the remarkable demand that is placed on the rowing athlete’s body. The unique biomechanics of the sport, plus the need for power, exceptional endurance and also flexibility and stability can be difficult to appreciate without competing in the sport. It is this understanding of this amazing and unique sport that draws Madison to treating rowing athletes. Not only does Madison have a passion for rowing, she also has a keen interest in treating netball and AFL athletes, having played both at state level. “I feel incredibly fortunate to be able to pursue my two great passions, my own sport of rowing and supporting other athletes to achieve their best.”  Madison Brown in action | Image: Sheridan Rynne

5 Self Care Tips for a Busy Life I work hard in and on my business and sometimes I don't realise how low my mood is. I have a fabulous support network who tells me when I've worked too much. The question they ask is, "Who have you said yes to that has taken you over the edge?" Self care is anything you do to avoid any sort of mental or physical health problem, it is an essential part of our life. Taking care of yourself, mind, body and soul will keep you in peak condition to deal with stress. Putting “Me time” into your daily routine is often thought of as being selfish. The person who has a busy life is praised and looked up to and the one who is making time for self care is seen as being lazy. Follow these tips for self-care and saying yes to yourself because you are number 1. 1. Good Nutrition: Eating a balanced diet helps our brain health. Make sure you eat plenty of fruit and veggies. Research shows that you actually are what you eat and your mood is impacted, “good food, good mood”. 2. Dance: Dancing also lifts your mood and keeps you physically fit. Join a dance class, learn new moves and make new friends. Winning all round. 3. Swear: I was shocked to read that research shows that swearing can reduce physical pain and lift self esteem. Remember don’t do it in church, choose your moments. 4. Read: Reading on a regular basis keeps your mind sharp. Reading fiction helps creativity and generates a more open minded thinking.

5.

Funny Animal Videos: Research shows that looking at something cute instantly elevates your mood. It also helps you be more productive at work. Watching funny cat videos while the boss isn’t watching boosts productivity, yay! I want you to pick up your phone now and schedule “me time” everyday and actually do it. Test the research results. Cait offers grief, loss and bereavement counselling for adults, adolescents, children and families in the Penrith CBD.

Welcome to April. And what a wet start it has been. From the scorching heat to flooded roads and causeways of late last month. The cooler weather has been a welcome relief, as has seeing the gardens and lawns replenished and nourished. A big 'shout-out' to all our service people, emergency services and volunteers; with their recent assistance to families across our community battling this extreme flooding. You all go the extra mile, thank you! On page 16, Camille fronts our local campaign in finding the next 'Bondi Vet'. Lets put our wonderful community on the map and show our support. Cait reminds us to 'schedule some me time' in this busy lifestyle we all live. See her hints, tips and suggestions for self care on page 15. With Easter around the corner, enjoy the opportunity to spend more time with those who mean the most; and less time with the chocolate! All good things in moderation. From us to you, 'Happy Easter'. "Just be real, it's not that complicated." For now, sit back with a cuppa in hand and enjoy your Community News.
