With 18 Livvi’s Place play spaces across Sydney, Jordan Springs is the next to gain an incredible space for people of all abilities to enjoy. Touched by Olivia is “a national charity that partners with communities, corporations and governments to build inclusive play spaces.” The Touched by Olivia Foundation is almost 10 years old and was created by the Perkin’s Family who lost their 8-month old baby Olivia. “The foundation advocates nationally for inclusion.” Livvi’s Place is designed to invite those members of the community “who are most isolated.” Executive Officer for Touched by Olivia Bec Ho, has revealed that “ABS told us that almost 20% of Australians identify as living with disability.” Touched by Olivia believes that “Inclusive built environments help to address the prejudice that these citizens experience on a daily basis.”  Livvi’s Place coming soon! What has the life and death of a Palestinian Jew some 2000 or more years ago to be of interest and concern in our day and generation? It is of interest because it is a life that was governed by an intense love for the people of his community. An intense love to reawaken the need to make known that a higher Love requires attention. At the Jewish temple in Jerusalem, Jesus the Christ, expected that it would remain a place of prayer. Instead it had become in his word “A den of thieves”. Sadly after some 70 years following his death, the temple was sacked and destroyed by the army of the Roman Senate and the diaspora of the Jews became a reality. The early followers of Jesus, stunned by his execution, later came on reflection to recognize that in his resurrection and ascension, the spiritual temple has been restored. The spiritual temple that is one of prayer and worship by those who accept that in Jesus the Christ is life and that life will culminate in eternity in that higher Love. It is of concern, because even amongst the followers of Jesus today there is division and argument. In society at large there is so much that continues to degrade the wonder of life. Nations and ideologies war with each other. Yet basic amongst all this is the genuine desire of people for real peace and a positive and purposeful life. But time and time again everyday life can become a hell. Why so? Is it not because there is failure to recognize the awesome effects of selfishness, both individually and nationally,

that shuts out, fails to implement, the most powerful force: the ability to love. That love is not idealistic. It is a reality that can transform, renew life. Certainly the prayer of Jesus that all may be one in God the Father allows us in turn to “think again” and live effectively in that higher Love. Rev John Hebblewhite

Sydney’s Newest Community in the West Gathers Momentum The opportunity to purchase land at the most sought after address in Western Sydney has been boosted with a further 290 lots approved in the new Jordan Springs’ community. Jordan Springs has been a popular choice for homebuyers, having achieved the status of the number one selling community nationally for the last quarter, according to a report released by Charter Keck Cramer. The approval of the Development Application (DA) for Stage 2 of the central precinct at the St Marys site brings the total approved lots to 670 lots. Arthur Ilias, Communities General Manager NSW/ACT, said that with the second DA approval at last month’s Joint Regional Planning Panel (JRPP) meeting, the development of Jordan Springs’ final precinct was gathering real momentum. “There’s been strong interest in the masterplanned community with more than 270 sales and civil works now underway across 70 per cent of the site. “Jordan Springs’ new eastern community will include a village square with local shopping for the area as well as parks

and sporting facilities surrounded by open space and natural bushland. “With this land release, Lendlease is meeting demand for affordable housing in a new community which will eventually be home to approximately 3,500 new residents,” Mr Ilias said. This new Jordan Springs release is located just two kilometres from the existing Jordan Springs shopping centre and, in the future, will be connected by road and hike and bike trails to Ropes Crossing. Homebuyers can purchase land now by visiting the Sales & Information Centre, Lakeside Parade and Jordan Springs Boulevard, Jordan Springs. Children who Swim are Safer, Smarter + Stronger

As a parent I’ve always suspected that swimming has helped my children in other areas, however there is now scientific evidence to support my assumption. Research conducted by Griffith University over four years has concluded that children who swim demonstrate more advanced cognitive and physical abilities than other children. During the project, entitled “Early Years Swimming, Adding Capital to Young Australians”, researchers surveyed parents of 7000 children aged five years old and under from Australia, New Zealand and the US. The Australian component included observing more than 120 swimming lessons in 40 swim schools nationwide. Parents reported back on their children’s

development and the information was weighed against the expected progression of children through established milestones. To overcome inevitable parental bias, a core group of 176 three, four and five-year-old children was involved in a more intensive assessment process using internationally approved testing methods. The study indicates that swimming children have many advantages when starting school. Lead researcher Professor Robyn Jorgensen said “While we expected the children to show better physical development and perhaps be more confident through swimming, the results in literacy and numeracy really shocked us. The children were anywhere from six to 15 months ahead of the normal population when it came to cognitive skills, problem solving in mathematics, counting, language and following instructions.” Professor Jorgensen said that as well as achieving physical milestones faster, the swimming children scored significantly better in visual-motor skills such as cutting paper, colouring in and drawing lines and shapes. He added, “On average, these children were eleven months ahead of the normal population in Oral Expression, six months ahead in Mathematics Reasoning and two months ahead in Brief Reading. Most amazing was the difference in Story Recall (17 months ahead) and Understanding Directions (20 months ahead).” Not a bad extra from an activity that also promotes health and safety! Children who swim are safer, smarter + stronger. Deciding which school you will choose for your child is one of the most important decisions you will make. All education will teach your children values for life – no school has neutral values. Without teaching our children the Biblical values that some things are right and others morally wrong, we leave them open to all sorts of influences. Does not the fact that they are children point to the need to guide them as they grow? What has been taught in secular schools and presented in the media has brought about changing attitudes in society, contributing to the breakdown in family values. While secular schools are attempting to bring values back into the curriculum it is difficult for them to find an agreed basis for such values. Christian schools are more important than ever for the protection of the innocence of our children and for guiding them into

Laura Watson founder of the Jordan Springs Women’s Community Group (J.S WCG) works to ensure that all women feel empowered and supported while taking time for themselves. Laura hosted an event on International Women’s Day last month to celebrate women and all they have done and continue to achieve. The Jordan Springs Women’s Community Group is for all women of any age, any status and living in any suburb. The group was created “for women to give back to themselves, to

have time out, rejuvenate and do things they never thought of doing.” The group meets on the first Thursday of every month at the Jordan Springs Community Corner at 7:30pm- 9:30pm. Laura ensures that each month is different, yet very important issues are addressed ranging from domestic violence, how to deal with stress, following goals and living healthy. Laura is proud to say that she has created “a safe haven for women to come and relax, learn and be inspired.” J.S WCG also acts as a point of call for women in the local community with Laura being a spokeswoman for the community. Laura has said “If women want things done in the community they bring their ideas to me to explore. Just like our win on getting a Video Ezy(TM) DVD hire machine installed at the local shops” Last month for International Women’s Day, Laura and the J.S WCG hosted an event where women were able to get together, share their stories and meet a range of women from the local community. The night included several motivational talks from Laura herself as well as Rhonda Rolfe from Harmonising Health and Katrina James from The Westies. A night spent sharing stories, forming new friendships, motivating and inspiring each other, allowed all those who attended to celebrate the power of women and continue the fight to equality. Parent Traps A “parent trap” is a behaviour that parents do that encourages their children’s mistaken behaviour. Parents can actually set their children up for failure. Listed below are three “parent traps” to be aware of in your daily interactions with your children. #1 Focusing on the negative The more attention you pay to negative behaviours the more your child will do of them. Forty years of research tells us that paying attention to children’s negative behaviours encourages them to do more of them. Children are hard-wired for attention. It’s all about survival – look at me, remember to feed me and look after me. What kind of attention (and thus behaviour) would you prefer – positive or negative? Make a big effort to pay more attention to what your children are doing well, for example, playing well, speaking kindly to each other, packing away their things, and putting their clothes in the wash basket. #2 It’s all about the praise The “good boy/girl/job” type of praise makes kids praise junkies. They love it but it doesn’t tell them what they are doing well. It makes them more dependent on you. Praise your children by telling them what they are doing well. For example, “I appreciate you putting the clothes in the wash basket, that makes it so much easier for me”, and “that is a clever idea, I can see that you put a lot of thought into figuring that out”. This is called “Descriptive Praise” and it helps to develop a well-rounded sense of self, and encourage thinking and independence. Remember to make it genuine and sincere. #3 Making children feel bad about themselves will make them correct their behaviour Calling kids names, yelling and screaming at them, harsh criticism, and putting them down, creates an internal sense of shame that can lead to mental health problems in adolescence and adulthood. When did you ever do better when someone made you feel bad about yourself? Make your home a “be kind zone” where nobody is allowed to call others names or put them down. Home should be an emotionally safe place for children and parents. Stay tuned for more parent traps next month.

FijiKids have hosted an incredible fundraising event last month. The FijiKids Family Fun Day had approximately 300- 400 people attend and raised a huge $5000. FijiKids hosted their Family Fun Day down at the Lakes and Community Centre in Jordan Springs. The weather was perfect on the day which drew large crowds to the event. The organisation had set themselves a goal of $3500 but they well and truly surpassed that by raising a huge $5000. FijiKids Representative Michelle McCann has said “a massive thank you to our local community.” The event was held to raise funds for a Fijian boy named Ashmit. Ashmit is a 10-year-old boy who has a brain tumour. Ashmit has been brought to Australia and has undergone surgery to remove the tumour. He still has a long battle ahead of him which includes radiation treatment. Ashmit was able to attend on the day with his father. Those who attended enjoyed many activities which included pony rides, face painting and crafts. Parents were also able to enjoy the markets, massages and a sausage sizzle. Michelle has mentioned that the day would not have been possible without the “help from two amazing members, Mayanne and Vanessa from the Lendlease team.” FijiKids would also like to “say a huge thank you to [the] local businesses that supported [them] on the day with donations towards the raffles.” Ashmit has since been released from hospital and into the care of friends to recover from his surgery. While he recovers from major surgery, he has been able to do some activities with his Dad and see a little of Sydney on days when he feels up to it. Being able to spend some time in Sydney is an amazing experience for both Ashmit and his father as it’s a long cry from the tiny rural village that is their home. Ashmit is to begin radiation treatment shortly after Easter. It is expected that he will have approximately 2-3 weeks of radiation to shrink the remaining tumour. Soon after Ashmit will return to Fiji where he will need ongoing care. FijiKids only have $8000 left to raise and any help will be greatly appreciated. Earlier this term, five of Llandilo Public School’s student leaders attended Young Leaders Day held at Allphones Arena, Homebush. Only five rows back, we had prime position and were right in the mix of everything happening on stage. The audience was addressed by a mixture of leaders, including Commissioner Andrew Scipione. The highlight of the day was a panel discussion featuring Scott Tweedie, ABC 3 presenter. The theme was ‘Master the Little’ and all speakers delivered the message of how it’s the little things that we do every day that makes a difference in our world. Our young leaders were challenged to think of how they can do something to change lives locally and globally. Alexia, Allanah, Sarah, Holly and Frank have listed the messages that they thought resonated with them most: ‘Stay strong, be brave, dreams can come true, always keep trying even when it’s not easy, never be scared, always follow your passion, make good choices’ This is a yearly event for the Llandilo leadership team and is made possible with the financial support of our P&C. “We all had a great day and we hope that next year’s leaders enjoy it as much as we did!!!�

Samuel Terry (1776?-1838), an ex-convict turned rich Sydney merchant, was granted 950 acres on 13th January 1818, in the area now known as Llandilo. The property at that time however, was known as Terry Brook after the owner. Terry owned a considerable amount of land in the Castlereagh/Cranebrook area. By the early 1860s, the name Llandilo was already in limited use. When part of the Terry Brook estate was sold it was named the Llandilo Estate, and when this estate in turn was subdivided in 1888 and bought by a Mr Sullivan from Sydney, it retained the Llandilo name. Sullivan gave the streets and avenues numbers instead of names, but found it difficult to sell the bushland blocks for orchards. Indeed, the last of the blocks were not purchased until the 1930s depression. In a report to the Education Department in 1888, an Inspector stated ‘Llandilo is the name given to an estate recently cut up into orchard blocks, and lying about four miles north of St. Marys. The whole estate is as yet practically unoccupied, the primeval bush still holds the ground‌’. The name Llandilo seems to have derived from the Welsh town of Llandeilo Fawr. WHAT’S HAPPENING AT... HENRY FULTON PUBLIC SCHOOL?

All of our students at Henry Fulton PS have settled into a new year of learning very well and are producing some wonderful work. We are looking forward to many exciting events that are happening leading up to the end of term. These include Stage 3 Camp, Debating and the Peer Support Leadership Day for Year 6. It is very pleasing that many students are becoming involved in various school events, increasing the sense of community at Henry Fulton. Our K-6 buddy reading program encourages the development of positive relationships between students across our school as will the Peer Support program starting next term. Twelve of our senior students will be attending the Students’ ANZAC Service at Penrith Paceway to pay their respects on behalf of their fellow students. A recent initiative introduced at our school is ‘Doing Other Things’ Groups also known as DOT Groups which allow our students the opportunity to be critical and creative thinkers. These mixed age groups include activities such as folk art, chess, choral boot camp, paper plane making, photography, scrapbooking and many more. The comments after the first session were extremely positive with students and teachers very enthusiastic about all the wonderful things that they will be able to create.

ANZAC Day Today I went to breakfast for International Women's Day at Penrith RSL. Hosted jointly by Women With Altitude and the RSL, it was a lovely community event attended by some amazing men and women celebrating women. At the end Andrea Turner-Boys (WWA) thanked the RSL and informed us that the charity we'd raised money for was “Homes for Heroes”. I hadn’t heard of it but there are 3000 of our veterans are sleeping rough. I was shocked at this statistic. “Homes for Heroes” were building a facility to house some of these veterans. ANZAC Day is the 25th of April. Every year we hear reports that nobody knows why we have it, and ask why are we celebrating war? The usual media stuff that isn't important. The story for ANZAC Day could be "Homes for Heroes" or our Australian Defence Force. Do you know that 42 Aussie soldiers gave their lives for our nation in Afghanistan? I've been watching "Afghanistan, inside Australia’s war" on ABC tv, where soldiers wearing cameras show what they go through. This made me wonder how they return to civilian life. They've seen mates blown apart from IUD's, entering villages not knowing friend or foe. On coming home, many of them noted that they feel they have to shut down, that they left a part of their self back in Afghanistan. One fellow wanted to go back and collect it, so he could be whole again. This year let’s not only remember the landing of Gallipoli in 1915 but also commemorate all soldiers who have served and died in all wars, conflicts and peacekeeping missions. Let's remember the contribution and suffering of all those who have served.

Preheat oven to 150°C. Brush a 7cm-deep, 10 x 20cm (base measurement) loaf pan with melted butter. Line the base and sides with non-stick baking paper. Sift the combined flour into a large bowl. Add the sugar, coconut and cinnamon. Make a well in the centre. Add the eggs, banana, oil and vanilla. Stir until just combined. Gently fold in the raspberries. Pour into the prepared pan. Smooth the surface. Bake for 1 1/2 hours or until a skewer inserted into centre comes out clean. Set aside in pan for 20 minutes to cool before turning onto a wire rack to cool completely. To make the fig butter, use an electric beater to beat the butter and icing sugar in a bowl until pale and creamy. Add the jam and beat until smooth. Cut banana bread into slices and serve with fig butter.

Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital New Veterinarian!! We are still growing!! Yay!! We have employed another veterinarian to accommodate the growth of the business. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital would like to welcome Dr Jonathan Young to the team. He has six years experience in small animal practice, and has undertaken further education in surgery, diagnostic imaging, dermatology, and feline medicine. He is competent in dental procedures, soft-tissue surgery, and in the long-term care of dogs with Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism) and diabetes. His current passion is in refining his approach to all aspects of feline and canine medicine. He will take the time to tailor the health care for each individual pet and pet-owner. In his spare time he takes his folks out for lunch and likes to grow vegetables in their backyard. His interest in veterinary science probably started from looking after many critters whilst growing up, including mice, budgerigars, zebra finches, ducks, Black Moor goldfish, Dwarf rabbits, and house-sitting for his friends' dogs and cats. He hopes one day to have a house with an automatic sensor tap, so that his cat can have flowing springwater any time of the day. Dr Theresa Pizzuto is Coming Back off Maternity Leave Theresa has been on maternity leave for 12 months and will be returning part-time June/July 2016. We look forward to having her back at work.

Leo the Guide Dog Puppy Camille is a puppy raiser for the Guide Dogs. She has been looking after Leo since October. The Guide Dogs have organized numerous outings for the puppies, and 6 puppies came to the Off Leash Park at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital for a group training session. During this training session, the puppies tried on the Guide Dog Harnesses for the first time. They looked so cute!! Fines To Go Digital Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith, last month welcomed the news that the NSW Government will change legislation to allow frontline police to issue fines via email and mobile text message. Police will soon be able to issue electronic infringement notices (EIN) under changes to be introduced to NSW Parliament, freeing up officers to spend more time on the frontline. It follows a successful trial in which officers were able to give offenders the option to receive fines electronically either by email or text message. Stuart Ayres said the trial made the process of issuing and receiving fines easier for both police and offenders. “During the trial officers were able to issue an infringement without having to return to the station which meant they spent more time out on the beat,� Stuart Ayres said.

“This method proved to be an advantage for rural and regional police who currently have to travel long distances to return to their station to complete paperwork. “This is about creating more ease and efficiency for police to issue infringements and for those who receive fines to be able to pay them more quickly.â€? While the trial involved a limited range of traffic infringement notices, it is now intended to enable NSW Police to issue an EIN for any offence which can attract an infringement notice as a penalty. Deputy Premier and Minister for Police Troy Grant said the wider use of electronic infringements will provide greater flexibility and choice. “While there is nothing voluntary about receiving an infringement notice, those fined will have the option to receive the notice electronically or on paper under these reforms,â€? Mr Grant said. “Those who cannot or are uncomfortable with receiving an electronic infringement notice will still have the option of receiving a paper-based notice.â€?
