Cooling The Streets With Tree Planting

Penrith City Council is planting trees along the nature strips of several streets, parks, and reserves over the coming months as part of Council’s Cooling the City strategy. This work will see 5,000 trees planted in suburbs Council has identified as having fewer trees and with communities that may be vulnerable during periods of extreme heat. The suburbs in the project include Erskine Park, St Clair, Colyton, North St Marys, and Oxley Park. By planting trees along nature strips in these locations, Council is providing additional shade for streets which may help cool homes and recreation spaces so community members can comfortably engage in outdoor activities over the summer period. Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen praised the street tree planting and encouraged residents to get involved and learn more about the benefits of tree planting, with opportunities listed on Council’s Have Your Say page. “The street tree planting is a continuation of work Council has previously conducted, including our successful Cooling the City Masterclass and heat sensor work with the University of Western Sydney,” Cr Hitchen said. “We’ve heard from many residents about their experiences with extreme heat and identified from these conversations that they felt substantial tree cover was much cooler and made outdoor recreation more enjoyable. “Residents will have the opportunity to attend event days where they can learn more about the species being planted in the area, the benefits of tree planting, and ways that they can get involved and help these trees thrive,” she said. The Department of Planning and Environment’s Executive Director, Green & Resilient Places, Steve Hartley, said the NSW Government was committed to making Greater Sydney a cooler and greener place for everyone. “One of the many ways we are working

to cool our suburbs down all year round is through the Greening our City grant program that is proudly funded by the NSW Government. “All trees planted count towards the Premier’s Priority to deliver one million new trees across Greater Sydney by the end of 2022,” Mr Hartley said. With this funding assistance, Penrith Council is achieving its vision of a greener, more liveable city in line with its existing Cooling the City strategy. Council will be maintaining these trees during the first 12 months of establishment and will encourage residents to learn how they can help these trees thrive at engagement days and via the Greening our City’s Have Your Say page. Residents can keep up to date with the street planting project and provide feedback by following the Greening our City Have Your Say page at yoursaypenrith. com.au/GreeningOurCity Find out more about Penrith Council’s Cooling the City strategy at penrith.city/ coolingthecity Find out more about the Department’s Greening our City at https://www.dpie. nsw.gov.au/premiers-priorities/greeningour-city The project is proudly funded by the NSW Government’s Greening our City grant. Minister For Defence Makes Local Visit

The Minister for Defence, Peter Dutton, recently joined Lindsay MP Melissa McIntosh at SES Headquarters in Claremont Meadows to meet with local SES volunteers who had been responding to the floods. Minister Dutton and Ms McIntosh then visited the Defence Establishment at Orchard Hills to meet and have breakfast with local Army, Navy, and Airforce Cadets. Ms McIntosh said she had been in contact with the Prime Minister and Defence Minister throughout the floods about the impact on her local community

and bringing Minister Dutton to meet the SES was an opportunity to thank our local volunteers for their extraordinary service. “This is the second time in 12 months that we have experienced extreme weather and floods. Our local emergency services have gone above and beyond to support those who have needed help. This includes working with the Australian Defence Force, to rescue a family from their flooded Werrington home. “Both the Minister and I wanted to thank our local volunteers for their tireless work, and great partnership with the ADF”. v

FRNSW Warns Against Using Generators Inside Homes

Following the destructive floods occurring across the state, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is warning the community against the incorrect use of fuel-powered equipment. Fuel-powered equipment can include generators or pumps that have an exhaust pipe. The exhaust fumes from the engine can quickly fill a room, house or garage and render the occupants unconscious. Fire and Rescue NSW Assistant Commissioner Education and Training, Roger Mentha said it's critical to avoid the use of generators and other fuel-powered equipment inside their homes. "This type of equipment is not suitable for indoor use and can lead to a buildup of colourless and odourless carbon monoxide. This can be fatal as it reduces oxygen when inside”. “All fuel-powered devices should be used in accordance with manufacturer's recommended practices. “Never use portable generators indoors, or in garages and sheds. They should always be used outside well away from windows, doors, vents or any other opening,” he said. For information on generator safety, visit: https://www.essentialenergy.com. au/-/media/Project/EssentialEnergy/ Website/Files/Safety/domestic_portable_ generators.pdf For further information on fire safety, visit www.fire.nsw.gov.au or contact your local fire station. rImage/Article: Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW)

Community Recovers After Floods

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Penrith Unit has been busy supporting and working with our local community in the recent storm and flood emergencies. Volunteers responded to more than 300 calls for assistance across the Penrith local government area, in addition to supporting other SES units. “With requests completed, we are currently working on Rapid Impact Assessments with our partner agencies – NSW Rural Fire Service, Fire and Rescue NSW, and the Defence Force – supporting the collection of information about damage to properties and infrastructure that will help inform ongoing response and recovery planning” said Ian Hyde, NSW State Emergency Service – Penrith Unit, Deputy Unit Commander. “We saw storm damage across Leonay, Emu Plains and Emu Heights at the beginning of the event with several trees damaging property and the usual leaking roofs. The flooding event followed directly on from us preparing for it with the distribution of sandbags provided by Penrith City Council and the Rapid Relief Team. The first flood peak left Penrith LGA relatively unscathed. The second peak, however, saw flooding more widely spread from Londonderry in the North to Wallacia in the South. Our teams responded to both storm damage and flood emergency requests for assistance. Flash flooding once again occurred in Hobart and Melbourne Streets in St Marys requiring some evacuation” Ian continued. Floodwaters have gone down and there are no longer any evacuation warnings or order for our area. Residents are advised to return with caution to flood affected areas. As residents clean up and recover, NSW SES advises everyone to monitor local conditions and remain alert, drive slowly, obey roadblocks, and never drive through floodwaters. To assist community members and councils with this recovery process, the NSW SES has a comprehensive 16-page guide which can assist with the recovery efforts following flooding: www.ses.nsw.gov. au/next-steps-toward-recovery. v [Top] The SES assisting with sandbags [Centre] The SES at work [Left] The SES and Police at work | Article: NSW State Emergency Service (SES)/Ian Hyde | Images: NSW State Emergency Service (SES)

Strength to Strength for Jordan Springs Cricket Club

Jordan Springs Cricket Club have just completed the 2021/2022 Summer Season, proving that they are one of the strongest clubs in the district. 18 teams represented the club during Summer, consisting of 12 Junior teams and 6 Senior teams. This was also an increase in the number of players and teams compared to the previous year. Made even more impressive was 7 of their teams making the finals. This included the Under 10’s, Under 11’s, Under 12’s, Under 13’s, Grade 3 (2 teams) and Grade 6. The Under 10’s, Under 11’s, Under 13’s and Grade 3 (JSCC Mighty 11) were all named Premiers, winning their respective finals. This was the first time the local club had teams that

won their Grand Finals in the Summer Season. “There was no better feeling than watching the club perform this season. The club is doing great. The volunteers have set a good foundation” said Sunil Chhabra, Jordan Springs Cricket Club Founder to the Jordan Springs Gazette. Strength in the club can be particularly found in the Junior ranks. This season, the Under 10’s and Under 11’s had the Top 3 Ranked batsman and bowlers in their age groups in the Penrith Junior Cricket Association Competitions. Whilst in the Under 13’s, the club had the Top Ranked batsman and bowler. “Our players were committed and determined with their training this year. This enabled them to be competitive on the pitch” he stated. JSCC Junior Blasters were selected to go to the SCG during the Ashes to play games during Australia and England’s lunch break. This was an exciting achievement. “We would like to thank the parents and volunteers for all their help. We hope to be the biggest junior club in the district next season” ended Sunil. The Winter Competition is expected to begin after Easter, on the last weekend of April. For more information about registrations or the club, visit their website at www.jordanspringscricketclub.com.au or find them on Facebook. r

Preventing Purchases

Unwanted

In-App

Many parents now find unexplained transactions on their credit cards, thanks to the rise of “in-app purchases”. In-app purchases refers to buying goods from inside of an application on a mobile device. Most children’s apps and games are free to download but make their profit this way. A recent study found that 95% of games targeted at children have at least one advertisement. Despite this, children are not developmentally equipped to respond to manipulative marketing strategies used to push in-app purchases. Advertising can be positioned seamlessly into gameplay, making it difficult for children to know the difference. Many children don’t even know that they are spending real money in these games. Emotional strategies can particularly be difficult for children. On Roblox, many in-game items are advertised as “for a limited time only”, creating pressure to buy now or miss out. Peer pressure also contributes heavily to Roblox purchases as the game has a hot topic in the school yard. While regulators get to grips with the issues, there are unfortunately few protections for parents who find themselves out of pocket for their children’s in-app purchases. Parents are often refused refunds by their financial institutions, the app’s carrier Apple Store or Android Play Store, or the app’s creator. Therefore, prevention is better than cure! It is important to ensure you are supervising children’s use of devices, especially for children under 5 years old. Children need support and guidance to discern and manage online advertising. It is important for children to express their wants, but we all must learn to manage the disappointment of not getting something we had our heart set on. Make sure you lock or set up two-step authentication for inapp purchases on any devices used by children. If you have an iPhone or iPad, you can lock in-app purchases through your App Store settings. On Android devices, you can configure the settings in Google Play so that all purchases require twostep authentication, meaning you will receive an email or SMS requiring you to finalise a purchase. Seeing one of your team excel in their career is exciting, and this has happened for The Healthy Body Company. “Ken joined our team as a Graduate Physiotherapist in 2020 and has had to launch his career through the challenges of the COVID pandemic. We were beyond excited to see him on the stage at the recent Local Business Awards” said Trisha Cashmere, the CEO of The Healthy Body Company. Ken Truong, Physiotherapist, mentor, and highly valued member of the team recently won in the Youth Award category of the 2021 Penrith City Local Business Awards. Ken joined The Healthy Body Company as a graduate physiotherapist and during the time he has been with the business, has made himself a vital member of the team. He achieves great outcomes with his clients, has undertaken additional training to run the Beat It program for Diabetes, and has represented the business while working with elite softball and touch football teams. Ken has made his personal hobbies into niche services and supports e-gaming athletes to perform at their best. He has also developed an online exercise program for young people that supports healthy habits for kids and their families in lockdown. This program was widely publicised by Kidsafe NSW in late 2021 to help prevent kids from injuries related to inactivity. Also, if you follow the business on its social media channels, you will have seen Ken’s highly amusing Photoshop work. Ken told us, “Joining The Healthy Body Company was the best career move I could have made. I am incredibly grateful to Trish for nominating me for this award and supporting me through this process”. Ken is now taking the next step in his career and is a mentor to our new group of graduate physiotherapists who you will meet when you pop into their Jordan Springs clinic. r Ken with his Youth Award | Image: Backalley Production Company. Young Women Leading the Way in STEM With International Women’s Day taking place last month, it was a fitting achievement for Penrith Christian School’s Team EVE, three young women in Year 9 recently taking out the win in the NSW State Finals in the Development class of the F1 in Schools Competition. The girls took out first place in seven categories, amongst these included the Grand Prix Race, Best Managed Enterprise, Best Team Marketing and Best Team Verbal Presentation. Principal, Mrs Tracey Deal, said “We are incredibly proud of our girls for this outstanding achievement and delighted to support them further now that they have progressed to the National Finals”. International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is a time to reflect on progress made, to call for change and to celebrate acts of courage and determination by women, who have played an extraordinary role in the history of their countries and communities. The school celebrated all women last month with the official theme of ‘Break the Bias’ and encouraged as many students and staff to wear something purple to acknowledge the special day. F1 in Schools is the only global multi-disciplinary challenge in which teams of students aged 9 to 19 deploy CAD/CAM software to collaborate, design, analyse, manufacture, test, and then race miniature compressed air powered cars made from the Formula One model block. It challenges students to use leadership, teamwork, physics, design, manufacturing, and marketing in a practical and innovative way. Whilst Penrith Christian School is a co-educational setting for toddlers to Year 12, the school prides itself on having several women in leadership roles, with both the Principal and Deputy Principal both female leaders as well as directors of learning. “While Australia is making steady progress in gender equality, women continue to be underrepresented at leadership and management levels in Australian workplaces. We are fortunate our school celebrates and encourages women in leadership roles so our students have role-models and can actively see a commitment to equality to break this bias” said Mrs Deal. r

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday

Lent: from Old English meaning ‘Spring’. Before Summer in the northern hemisphere gives rise to the idea of “making new”, which loses some meaning in the southern hemisphere were matters prepare for Winter! In the Christian calendar, the title given to that period or ‘season” in the year which provides for deeper contemplation on the life and work of Jesus, the Christ. His suffering and death, which is recalled during Easter which is the culmination of the Lenten contemplation. Sin is a common word used in many situations, but the concept of ‘sin’ or ‘sinner’ has a tendency to have lost its impact in thinking and lifestyle. However, the old adage “we reap what we sow” still carries meaning. Sadly, with human nature it is possible by persistence to darken our consciousness and to disregard examining lifestyle and attitude. It was St John who wrote many years ago that if we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves and indeed we ignore the truth. So, Lent is a period of self- examination: not to decrease our recognition of self-honour, but to enable us to better develop our self, both in attitude and conduct. Our prayer to God in Christ as we contemplate the mysteries of the Faith is strengthened by our acceptance that by the death on the cross and in the resurrection of Jesus, sin is not an obsession to dwell on, but rather we recognize that in the forgiveness granted by those two events, we think and act in life knowing that we have the strength to contain and resist forces that attempt to depreciate. If at times we fail, the words of Christ can hit home: go, stand and sin no more and some 2480 years ago a psalmist could pray: “the Lord is merciful and gracious”. The Good News According to … TOY STORY Toy Story tells of an unlikely friendship between an old-fashioned cowboy doll named ‘Woody’ and a Space Ranger toy named ‘Buzz Lightyear.’ It’s characters and universal themes of friendship, identity and purpose in life have made it one of the best loved movies of all time. Who could forget Buzz Lightyear – hilariously unaware that he is a toy, but now grief-stricken and disillusioned after learning that it’s true. With one of his arms missing, he sums up his situation by saying, “I am nothing! I am just a stupid, little, insignificant toy”. Woody, however, thinks differently, telling him, “You mustn’t be thinking clearly. Over there is someone who thinks you’re the greatest. And it’s not because you’re a space ranger … It’s because you’re his!” Consequently, as Buzz Lightyear lifts his foot, he sees written in permanent ink, the name of the one who loves him and to whom he belongs. The point is clear. It is not who we are or what we achieve that determines our worth, but rather by whom we are loved and to whom we belong. In a similar way, the Bible teaches that God has put His name on us by having made us in His image, and so that we might belong to Him. “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls”. (Matthew 11:28-29)

Do You Need a Hand? Sometimes we need a helping hand. With the recent floods and pandemic, there’s never been a more important time to help one another. Local Keith Myles has started ‘Penrith Helping Hands’, where the local community can come together if they need a hand or would like to lend a hand. Penrith Helping Hands is a Facebook page, that was created last month. In just a few short days, 250 members joined, and it continues to grow. “I have done volunteer work with Mama Lana’s. I had planned to do other volunteer work, when COVID restrictions made that difficult” explained Keith to the District Gazette. “After having a conversation with a friend about how much I enjoy volunteer work, they were talking about a job that needed to be done where they didn’t have help and could have done with a helping hand” he continued. The motto for Penrith Helping Hands is simple, “Kindness is free”. It is not an organisation, rather a concept that can be practiced. “There is bound to be people who will need help and will also like to help. This will create opportunities for the community to come together and even make friends” smiled Keith. For now, he hopes to watch it evolve. There may be new areas introduced depending on how it’s welcomed and its success. “The more people that follow the page means that more people are getting and giving help” Keith stated. “It’s important to give something back. This also brings good karma” he ended. For more information, search Penrith Helping Hands on Facebook.

How Does Vitamin K Prevent Arterial Calcification? Artery walls contain smooth muscle cells. They help control vessel tone, diameter, blood pressure, and use vitamin K to produce/secrete large amounts of a protein called ‘mature matrix-Gla-protein’ (MGP), a strong inhibitor of arterial-wall calcification. When animals can’t make MGP: 1. For genetic reasons, 2. Because they’re given warfarin; extensive calcification of large arteries occurs within 4 weeks of birth. Warfarin stops vitamin K being utilised in the final step of MGP production, so immature forms of MGP are produced. Immature MGP fails to prevent arterial calcification, and arteries harden. Warfarin causes “artificial” vitamin K insufficiency leading to arteriosclerosis. Vitamin K insufficiency/deficiency can occur for other reasons: 1. Low dietary intake (significant but underappreciated cause) 2. Disturbed intestinal vitamin K absorption due to gastrointestinal disorders, 3. Antibiotic therapy. Artery walls endure huge stresses second-to-second, as they’re forced to endlessly expand/stretch and recontract by the beating heart. To cope, vessel wall tissues are highly metabolically active, and in healthy (nutrient-replete) persons, wall cells have sufficient nutrients to continually repair/maintain themselves and wall tissues. In unhealthy people (multiple-nutrient-deficits), vessel wall cells cannot meet physiological demands placed upon them by their high stress environment. Wall cells fail to complete the necessary repairs to maintain themselves and arterial wall structural integrity. Pathological

wall changes appear. According to this model, cardiovascular disease is primarily a dietary deficiency disorder. Under normal/physiological conditions, arterial wall fluids are supersaturated with calcium and phosphate, however calciumdeposition is prevented by circulating and locally produced calcification inhibitors (including MPG). Under ‘pathologic (nutrient depleted) conditions, arterial wall stress leads to: 1. Artery wall cells undergoing apoptosis (they die), 2. Bits of dead cells (apoptotic bodies) and other signals alerting (summoning) platelets and immune system cells 3. Platelets bind to damaged vessel-walls releasing calcificationpromoting factors 4. Remaining artery wall cells respond to these signals by synthesizing all components of atherosclerotic lesions including calcium depositing proteins 5. But insufficient anti-calcification factors are synthesised 6. And mineralization occurs Vitamin K via MGP, inhibits calcification. MGP blocks: 1. Pro-calcification cell signal-production: a. Apoptotic bodies b. Matrix vesicles c. Hormonal signals 2. Calcium depositing proteins production 3. Calcium deposition directly by binding calcium-salts 4. Growth of existing calcium micro-deposits (covers them) So, to avoid artery calcification, just eat more Vitamin K containing natto and fresh leafy greens.

As we head into April, our thoughts go out to all those that were affected by the recent floods. No one could have predicted the devastating conditions that we endured. One thing is for sure and that is that we’ll continue to come together with strength and resilience to recover. This month is a time for both Easter and ANZAC Day. Important times to share with our loved ones, in reflection, hope and happiness. We continue to be amazed at the members of our community who inspire us all every day when sharing their stories. Like us, you’re probably scratching your heads wondering how we’re already onethird of the way through 2022. The cooler weather is coming, reminding us to rug up soon. Thank you for continuing to support our advertisers and small business. We couldn’t do this without you! Enjoy your Community News and as devastating as it has been, Dolly Parton once said, “If you want the rainbow, you gotta’ put up with the rain”.
