FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday

The simplicity of the Christian faith is often obscured by the variety and magnitude of competing philosophies and theologies. Couple this with the continuous flow of new ideas and discoveries amongst the other sciences it is easy to see how this obscurity occurs. The Christian faith simply rests on a person who some 2000 years ago exhibited by his life two factors: trust and honesty. He trusted in God the Father and by His honesty was able to attract people which resulted in the Christian Church. Sadly history has proven not only in the Christian Church but of life in general, that trust and honesty when negated lead to contempt of others and violence in society and between nations. Trust in God: what is meant by this? It is that no matter what happens all life ends in death but through Jesus Christ, trust gives another dimension- simply life after death continues in God. Certainly we do not in this life confirm this reality- we simply trust. This is strengthened by hope that begins to answer the question what is life? Why are we here? As such life, no matter what results for us, is a gift and death assures the gift continues. Honesty is simplicity in itself. Sadly so much of life is lived dishonestly. The Psalmist a long time ago sang ‘Lord who may abide in your tabernacle…..he that leads an uncorrupted life and does the thing which is right, who speaks the truth from his heart…’ Overruling this reality is the extension of forgiveness: ‘your sin is forgiven, go sin no more’. We know the ability to

do so comes from God through the life and death of Jesus the Christ. We know that when we celebrate the birth of Jesus the Christ [Emmanuel ‘God with us’] that culminates the long history of religious searching, cradle and cross are inextricably interwoven. At Saint David’s on Christmas Eve [the Christ mass] we tell the story through carol and Scripture at 11pm. Following this is the service for Holy Communion when we do what Jesus asked before his execution- we share in the “last supper” Every good wish for a Holy and merry Christmas and a happy New Year.

PARENTS CORNER

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps… This month we wrap up the series on parent traps that we have been focussing on all year… Blame Is A Dead End Street. It stops us from looking clearly at a problem, and how we can change things so that our children (and ourselves) can learn new skills and behaviours. It is always better to try to solve a problem in a proactive way rather than being consequence-driven. Being proactive means thinking about what we need to teach our children and how we can teach them, with the aim of preventing the mistaken behaviour. Blame takes two forms: • Blaming The Child For How You Feel “You are making me angry.” Who owns your emotions? You do. Yes, your child may be doing something extremely cheeky, but your emotional response is your own. It’s no wonder that many children blame others for the problems they are experiencing. We role model it for them. Take responsibility for own thoughts, feelings, and actions. Most child behaviour does not require a light-speed reaction. You can take 20 to 30 seconds to take some deep breaths and centre yourself before your respond to your child’s behaviour. • Blaming yourself, and thinking that you are a bad parent. You cannot be a calm, patient, and consistent parent if you are stressed or depressed. Knowledge is power. These days, most parents don’t want to smack or yell at their children, but they don’t have any other strategies in their parenting toolbox. A parenting workshop or course, either in person or online, will provide additional tools to enable you to be a more positive parent. • Blaming Someone Else. If you blame someone else (partner, siblings, teacher) for your child’s behaviour, you may come to the conclusion that there is nothing you can do to change it. This can lead to frustration and may affect your relationship with other people and your child. There is no such thing as a perfect parent or a perfect child. Most of the training is on-the-job and all new skills and behaviours take time. When we have a positive attitude towards our parenting and the belief that we can make change, the whole family can benefit.

Community Fun Day Marks Opening Of Village Oval

Lendlease officially opened its new 5.5-hectare Village Oval playing fields last month with a community celebration for the whole family. More than 500 locals and residents attended the celebration, playing games with family and friends and enjoying local entertainment. General Manager of NSW/ACT Communities, Arthur Ilias, said that having a community with parks, open spaces and facilities, like the Village Oval, is extremely important to families in the Jordan Springs area. “Research commissioned by Lendlease found that 87 per cent of Australian parents believed playgrounds, parks and outdoor spaces are the most important amenities to have within their neighbourhood. “Parents are looking for outdoor places where their children can play, where family and friends can get together, and where

they can strengthen their ties with the community. “From picnics on the grass to kicking a footy with friends, the Village Oval playing fields offer residents and the community a great opportunity to spend more time outdoors,” said Mr Ilias. Not-for-profit sporting clubs and associations were delighted with the enthusiasm of locals of all ages and joined the celebration to drum up interest for sports and activities for the 2017 winter season. The Jordan Springs Dads’ Group raised more than $2,000 for The Children’s Hospital at Westmead with a community BBQ and show bag sales. The Village Oval is one of the largest outdoor areas in the Jordan Springs community and includes playing fields, basketball and netball courts, a gym and Parkour circuits. It also has a learn-to-ride bicycle circuit and two off-leash areas for four-legged friends.

Magic Macy Will Leave You Spellbound

Growing up, many of us had childhood dreams of one day becoming a magician. For 10 year old local girl Macy Hope, she is indeed living that dream as Magic Macy. “I first took up magic two years ago in 2014, when I was 8 years old. I was in grade 2 and performed in my school’s talent show. I had my cousin, Lovely Lani, be my assistant in the final. I have just performed another magic show in this year’s ‘Henry Fulton’s Got Talent’ with another cousin, Fabulous Frankie, as my assistant” said Macy. In just two short years, Magic Macy already has a number of shows and performances under her belt, with many more planned in the future. Having performed at school talent shows, birthday parties, markets, a christening a school fete, and recently a show at the Kmart Penrith Wishing Tree Launch. “I use some of my pocket money each year to buy a present for the wishing tree and was very excited to actually do magic there this year” she

said. The local community were treated to a special show for Magic Macy recently, with the young magician performing at her first markets, The Jordan Springs Lakeside Markets. Not only was Magic Macy dazzling people with her magic, but the entrepreneur was also selling magic tricks. Magic Macy already has fans, both young and old. One of the most common questions they ask is how does she learn her magic tricks? “I learn magic tricks from all different places. I was given a magic kit one birthday and learnt a lot from that. I have been taught some tricks from people working in magic shops and I have learnt lots from YouTube, which gave me the idea to start my own Magic Macy YouTube channel” explained Macy. Another great way that Magic Macy has learnt her tricks is by watching her favourite magicians, of which she has four. “I have four faves. The first is Cosentino. I love his cool escapes and I have started reading his book ‘Anything Is Possible’. I like Dynamo and how he levitates. I saw his show ‘Seeing Is Believing’ and it was amazing. I met Jackson Aces recently and I love his card tricks. And of course, there’s me, Magic Macy!” she beamed. Being a magician isn’t easy, but Magic Macy has some great advice for anyone wanting to pick up a magic wand and become one. “You need to practice, a lot! As Cosentino said, anyone can learn a magic trick, but not everyone can perform a magic trick. Learning magic is great. It gives you confidence, improves your acting skills and is so much fun! You have to get used to talking in front of people you don’t know and you can become a magic star. I love seeing people’s reactions when I’ve performed a trick well. Also, you should remember, a true magician NEVER reveals their secrets” she finished.  Magic Macy ready to perform at a birthday party | Image Supplied

Love To Swim Swim for Safety Swim for Life! Stuck for gift ideas this Christmas? In an emerging trend, grandparents, parents, carers and relatives are thinking outside the (gift) box, and bypassing more traditional presents for experiential presents, or gifts which teach children a skill. Swimming lessons proved to be one of the most popular choices last year, with gift voucher sales in 2015 showing an increase of over 50% on the previous year’s numbers. With the weather heating up, it is important to remember that drowning is still the biggest cause of accidental death in Australian children under 5, with the majority of deaths occurring in backyard swimming pools. Encouragingly, each year registered swim schools in Australia conduct over 20 million lessons to approximately 600,000 families nationwide, however an estimate from Royal Lifesaving Australia suggests that less than 25% of all children in Australia are being taught to swim by commercial swim schools each year. “I think parents and grandparents in particular are looking for gifts that will enhance their child’s learning outcomes, or provide them with a skill or an experience.” Alan Bentley, owner of Nepean Swim and Fitness stated. “Of course children’s safety is a huge factor in the decision making process when choosing the gift of swimming lessons, but I am also hearing from parents that they are reluctant to give their children another piece of technology to encourage couch potato habits, and instead would like to see their children get out and get active. A gift that ticks both these boxes represents value for money to parents” said Bentley. Bentley added “Interestingly, we are also seeing an increase in enquiries for our CPR courses for carers, so I think the water safety messages and behaviours are really starting to be taken onboard and practiced in the wider community. However while drowning’s are still taking place in Australia, there is always room for improvement.” Please remember to stay vigilant around the water this summer holidays. Wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year! Image Supplied

Construction Begins On Timber Community Hub At Jordan Springs The new 4,000sqm facility, which will become the heart of the Jordan Springs community, is the first public building in NSW to be built with cross-laminated timber (CLT), a more sustainable and efficient form of construction. General Manager of Lendlease’s Communities business in NSW/ACT, Arthur Ilias, said once complete the Community Hub would be a place for the community to come together to create, play and learn. “The Community Hub will have a range of multipurpose areas that will meet the education, social and recreational needs of the whole community. “The hub builds on Lendlease’s commitment to creating sustainable places with its CLT construction and environmental features that will underpin reduced energy and water consumption and more efficient heating and cooling than a traditional build,” said Mr Ilias. The Community Hub will be located in the Town Centre of Jordan Springs, cementing itself as a visible landmark in the growing community. Locals will be able to enjoy multipurpose rooms, IT facilities, a kitchen, outdoor space as well as a community hall seating up to 120 people. Penrith Mayor John Thain said Council values open spaces and community facilities like the Community Hub for many reasons, primarily because they bring people together. “The Community Hub has been a collaboration from the start with Council, Lendlease and the community working together. “When construction is finished it will continue that legacy

by providing the community with a modern and sustainable meeting place for generations to come,” Cr Thain said. Lendlease is referencing the Green Building Council of Australia’s Green Star sustainability rating tool through its design, construction and operational performance. Solar power, through a photovoltaic array on the hub’s roof, will provide an annual reduction of 25.6 tonnes of CO2, equivalent to taking 5.8 cars off the road. The building will target a 25 per cent reduction in water consumption through efficient fittings and rainwater collection and storage. Construction is scheduled to be completed by late 2017.

St Paul’s Grammar School Named A White Ribbon Australia School

The SPGS White Ribbon School launch was attended by many community members and distinguished guests - including White Ribbon Ambassador, Flight Sergeant Gregory Purdue, MP Emma Husar, the federal member for Lindsay, Robyn Yates, the Chief Policy and Compliance Officer at AIS NSW, Counsellor Shae Foenander, representing Mark Greenhill the Blue Mountains City Mayor, and Laura Watson, from the Jordan Springs Women’s Community Group. All staff and students attended assemblies in the Junior school and Secondary schools, officially declaring that we are a White Ribbon School. Our gathering in this way is a clear representation of the White Ribbon Organisation’s chief objective: primary prevention. Primary prevention programs, as outlined by Flight Sergeant Purdue, are aimed at generating awareness, attacking the

Llandilo

problem of domestic violence at its foundation in schools, workplaces, and public forums, actively changing opinions and actions. Flight Sergeant Purdue presented some fundamentally worrying statistics, including that 1 in 3 women will have experienced domestic violence in their lifetimes. He stated that domestic violence is an action that violates the very fundamentals of human rights, and that there is no situation, place, circumstance, or the like where these actions are acceptable. A key part of the campaign is to emphasise that this is not just a women’s issue, highlighting the positive role men can, and need to play in order to stop violence against women. This event marks the beginning of social change within our school community, stepping forward to instigate a culture wherein violence in any form is specifically unacceptable, particularly when enacted on the basis of gender. It was so encouraging for us, as students, to see this event being celebrated across the school and the sheer number of people willing to offer their assistance and support for this cause. From the students who sold amazing White Ribbon Day cupcakes all day, to the dancers who performed at the assembly, and to anyone who bought a cupcake or White Ribbon wrist band. We look forward to seeing how the White Ribbon Campaign inspires us at St Paul’s to stand against Domestic Violence in the ways we speak and act in our personal relationships. We believe that students of St Paul’s will be pivotal to a new generation of individuals who value gender equality and respect and encourage others to do so.  School Capt Matthew Thomas, Vice Capt 2017 Alhassan Alseneid, School Capt Meredith Colagiuri | Image Supplied

Master Of His Craft Thirty-five years ago, a young, quiet and shy boy wandered into the PCYC at Penrith and signed up for Judo. In 1985, four years later, the boy took up Uechi Ryu Karate, then Kung Fu in 1987. Fast forward to 2016, and that same young boy has now grown into one of Australia’s Martial Arts most experienced Instructors, having been inducted into the ISKA Hall of Fame as Kung Fu Instructor of the year twice. Jordan Springs resident Stuart Brooks has devoted his life to martial arts, teaching hundreds and hundreds of students the fundamentals of self-defence over the years. “I started teaching Kung Fu in 1991 as a 16-year-old at the PCYC in Penrith. Ever since then, I have been teaching continuously” Stuart said. Stuart has won over 300 first places in tournaments and many more second and third place trophies. This includes winning Regional, State, National and International level competitions. As well as Kung Fu, he has also competed in Sparring, Kata, Weapons, Self Defence and Demonstration divisions across Australia. For anyone thinking about taking up martial arts, Stuart has this advice; “Self-defence of any sort is a necessity, not a want these days. I believe it should be a school subject where you can give your kids the power to protect themselves. Unlike other sports, martial arts can save your child if someone is trying to hurt them. Martial arts aren’t just something we do, it’s something we live” he said. Christmas Grief Having holidays without your loved one is tough. For some people the first Christmas is the most difficult but for others it’s a blur because the death occurred toward the end of the year, so the second Christmas becomes difficult instead. My mum died on Christmas Day 2015. I vividly remember getting the call from the doctor telling me that Mum had died, I remember ringing my brothers and sisters to let them know and then we all went on with our day. We were with family and it felt surreal at the time. This whole year has been hard (as grieving is). This year I’ve felt vulnerable. The thought that hits me hard sometimes is that I’m now the eldest daughter of three generations of eldest daughters not 4 anymore. I’ve also thought about my own mortality. Christmas is tough because you thought you’d be more together than you are. If you’re finding the second Christmas more difficult than the first, it’s normal. The first year you might have cut out seeing some of your friends or skipped celebrations because you were too sad and friends understood last year but this year everyone expects you to be back on board as usual. Last year people probably cut you some slack, they understood that the grief was fresh and you wouldn’t be yourself. If you’re finding Christmas celebrations difficult this year (or any other year), be kind to yourself. Let people know how you’re feeling and get their support. Be kind to yourself by letting people know what you do and don’t want to do.

Feel what you need to feel and don’t be governed by others. I hope you find joy, peace and love this Christmas.

Santa Photos With Your Pets Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2016 to take photos with your pets. Santa will be here from Thursday 1st December until Saturday 24th December 2016, Mon-Fri (9am-7pm) and on Saturdays (9am12pm). For a $10 cash donation, your Santa photo is presented in a Christmas card, with all proceeds donated to the Guide Dogs NSW. We have Christmas themed props for your pet’s photos (e.g. hats and scarves), feel free to bring in your own outfits.

Keeping Your Pets Safe At Christmas Ham and Turkey (meat/bone/fat) – Causes vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, or constipation. Skewered Meat - If your dog is a rubbish raider, he/she may swallow a skewer, this can be life threatening should the oesophagus, stomach or intestine be pierced and cause peritonitis. Chocolate/Fudge - Causes vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis, Theobromine can cause chocolate toxicity resulting in seizures or death. The more cocoa that is in the chocolate the more toxic it will be. Cooking chocolate is seven times more toxic than milk chocolate. Coffee/Tea - Coffee and Tea contain xanthines, which can cause cardiac and nervous system damage. Grapes, Sultanas and Raisins - These contain a toxin that targets the kidneys and can cause renal failure. Macadamia Nuts – Causes vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis. Macadamia nuts contain a toxin that can affect the nervous system of dogs – resulting in incoordination or paralysis.

Alcohol - Alcohol even in small quantities can cause intoxication. intoxiication Clean up after parties and don’t leave drinks at dog heights. Alcohol can kill your pet. Cooked Bones - Never feed your dog/cats cooked bones. These bones can splinter and cause intestinal tearing causing peritonitis – this is life threatening. Artificial Sweeteners - Xylitol common in many sugar free drinks and lollies causes low blood sugar (even in small quantities) in dogs. Meat Soaked Strings from your Roast - These taste delicious to your pets. Can cause linear foreign body requiring emergency surgery. Decorations and Wrappings - Risk for intestinal obstruction (linear foreign body) or strangulation. Christmas tree decorations – Can cause strangulation, intestinal obstructions, cuts from glass ornaments. Heat Stroke/Stress - An Australian Christmas is often spent around the pool or outside having fun. If your pet doesn’t know when to rest/stop playing/running laps around the pool they may quickly succumb to heat stroke. Batteries - If swallowed these can be toxic or cause an intestinal obstruction. Electrical Cables/Christmas Lights - Electrocution risk or fire risk if chewed. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. Here we are, the final publication of the year. 2016 has seen the team at the District Gazette reporting on many highs and lows across our community. We have witnessed countless success stories, and many amazing and heroic moments. It’s been a brilliant year of bringing local businesses to your door, it’s no secret that ‘We Love Local’ and thank you for supporting local business too. Christmas is almost upon us! Spare a thought for those that are entering this Festive Season with emptiness and a heavy heart, whether it’s the first year or a repeat of many without that special someone, the pain seems to remain the same. Dr Seuss once said ‘Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory’. Share many special moments with those close to you this Festive Season. From the team here at the District Gazette, we wish you and yours a happy and safe Christmas and New Year, we’ll be back in February 2017! Stay safe!
