Penrith City Library launches Free App Penrith City Library has launched the new Library app, available for download on all iOS and Android devices. The app provides members with easy access to the library catalogue, electronic library, events, online study support, Library news and more. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM said the app was a great tool for the Library and members, especially during COVID-19 where many of the Library’s face-to-face events, activities and classes have moved online with services operating in a limited capacity. “The app is a great way for members to connect with the Library from the comfort of their own home to have access to the Library’s fantastic services,” Cr McKeown said. “The Library staff have put a lot of work into the app to ensure that it provides members with everything they could want at the touch of a button.” “The app provides members with the opportunity to book tickets for upcoming Library events, view the Library’s numerous resources, databases, and view the Penrith Local History blog that the Library’s Flashback Friday social posts come from. “With the functionality to link family member accounts under the one app and providing students study assistance with an online study tutor, the app is incredibly easy to use. I’d highly recommend members download the app,” she continued. The app was developed in collaboration with SOLUS and is available for free on iOS and Android devices under the app name “Penrith City Library”. FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
As always, in the history of Mankind there arises situations that challenge the very fabric of the continuum of life. Earthquakes, floods, fires, the horror of wars have and continue to make their mark. But again, there are many examples of working by people and institutions for the betterment of the ‘common good’. Add to this the marvels in technology that enables instant communication and information, and it is certain we have entered a new epoch in our history. Amongst all the ‘noise’, how does one make sense of it particularly when the individual determines his attitude not in terms of the common good but rather in the attitude “what’s in it for me”? To overcome this attitude, there is the action of contemplation. In many cases it’s a long-lost practice. Contemplation provides the opportunity to stop and to reflect. Its major impetus is the question ‘why are things so’? For example, when one at the end of a busy day takes time to sit and view the night sky, the impetus for contemplation is gained. Yet the question will arise as to how far we understand the sky we are viewing. Its immensity, its volatility, its purpose, its size comes to bear down on our thoughts. This is nothing new in history. Science as we know it today has simply built on and expanded the contemplation of those who have been before us. One thing certain is that what we think today as being a correct answer will not necessarily hold in the future. All science is not based on proving, but in falsifying what is held. Just like the three-tier universe has long been falsified. It is amongst the ‘noise’ of today in politics, living etc. and the question ‘why are things so’ that theology finds its function. Not in proof, but in the art of falsification.

Jordan Springs Probus Club The Club was formed under the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. We welcome new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs. As the situation with Coronavirus starts to ease, your local Probus Club at Jordan Springs is trying to get back to some normality. Penrith Council have allowed the reopening and use of the Community Hall, all be it with some limitation on the numbers and the maintenance of social distancing. This has allowed us to recommence our monthly meetings with the inclusion of guest speakers. Our events calendar is looking a little thin, as coach hire and locations are still subject to heavy restrictions in the numbers allowed with some destinations/attractions still not open for business. We are now back to enjoying our monthly lunches with an expanding choice of local venues. The Tuesday lunch for November was planned for the Irish Pub, O’Donoghues in Emu Plains and for December our Christmas lunch will be at the Burning Log Theatre Restaurant in Windsor. The committee continues to plan for the eventual lifting/relaxing of restrictions and the return to a more normal monthly agenda. This ensures members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance, developing new interests and staying active. Future planned events for the coming twelve months will include Berima Surveyor General Inn for lunch and day trip, Manly train and ferry for lunch, Mudgee Getaway Cottages (4 nights), Bundeena Ferry and lunch, Camden Historic Tour (coach) and planning is continuing towards an interstate trip. The Jordan Springs Probus Club normally meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, at 9:30am for a 10:00am start. Visitors are most welcome. For more information, contact Brian on 0402 699611 or via email at jordansprings@probusclubs.com.au. Visit our website at probussouthpacific.org/microsites/ jordansprings.

Spreading Christmas Cheer with the Firies Santa Claus is getting ready to leave the North Pole this month and he plans to make a very special trip to join the Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade for their Santa Run to Jordan Springs and Llandilo. Pending the COVID-19 situation and operational requirements of the brigade and their crew, the Santa Run will visit Jordan Springs in December, beginning in the morning where the fire truck will visit various local parks. It will continue again on Christmas Eve in Llandilo. It’s a great opportunity to come and say hi to Santa and take photos. Santa will have lollies onboard for the kids and can only be at each park for 15 minutes as it is his busy time of year. “Last year we were extremely busy with a devastating fire season. Now this Christmas, we must all cope with the COVID-19 pandemic. Our brigade hopes that we can bring Santa to the children of our community and spread some desperately needed joy” said Rick Burns, Captain of Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade. Captain Rick has been a member of the RFS at Llandilo for many years and he always looks forward to this festive time of the year and the cheer that it creates amongst the local community. “For the members of Llandilo, this year’s Santa Runs will be the highlight of a very tough year. We are confident that we can provide this service for Santa in a COVID-safe manner, with plenty of Christmas cheer” he said. Students to Get Extra Support Due to Remote Learning Disruptions

Christmas calls Connection
for
Joy
and
Have you finished your Christmas shopping? Haven’t started? Got a few bits and pieces? A Dad said to me recently that he was getting so stressed about Christmas. He’s a single Dad raising three boys and he can’t afford much. I asked him what his stress was achieving and he said that he wasn’t getting much joy from life. I asked what his kids really needed, and he replied “a Dad that’s not stressed and that is there for them”. Kids need a parent that is present to their needs every day, not a parent that has a sack load of presents on Christmas Day. Sometimes parents think that buying expensive “educational” toys make their children do better academically. Children don’t need stuff, they need you. Research has shown that children learn more in social interaction with caring, interested, and more knowledgeable others. The more that parents talk with (not talk at) their children the better they do socially, emotionally, and academically. So your child will learn more from sitting down with you with a world atlas poster that cost you $1, and exploring and chatting about what you both see and know, than she will from the electronic world globe toy that cost you 120 bucks. Those plastic toys will cause more mess and stress, and will sooner or later end up in landfill, but the gift of your time and energy with your children will last a lifetime. I’ve seen this little poem doing the rounds. It is such a simple, lovely thing… • “Something they want • Something they need • Something to wear, and • Something to read.” The “something they need” could be a bit tricky. They might think they need the latest electronic thing-a-ma-jig. Or you may think you need to give it to them to prove your love for them. Ask yourself if the “gift” is going to create connection or disconnection? So many parents I speak to regret purchasing the electronic thing that has caused their child to become more isolated and withdrawn and then had the battle over having to place limits on it. Wishing you much joy and connection this holiday season. r

This year has certainly been an interesting year for education across the globe. Here in Australia, the impact of COVID-19 has varied from state to state, with the full extent of impact not yet being realised. Last month, the NSW Premier, Gladys Berejiklian, announced a plan to implement additional support within schools by offering the COVID Intensive Learning Support Program for students who have fallen behind due to remote learning. The NSW Department of Education will assist schools to identify students requiring this support and employ a selection of teachers to execute the program, which is set to be culminating in the form of intensive small group instruction within the school setting. The teachers will be selected from submitted expressions of interest and encompass a range of educational backgrounds and current work statuses; including casual teachers who were impacted by a lack of work during remote learning. Minister for Education, Sarah Mitchell explained, “We know that learning for many students stagnated during the pandemic and tuition in small groups will help re-engage students in their schooling”. Whilst it is encouraging that the far-reaching impact of remote learning practices on vulnerable children is recognised, it will be interesting to see how equitable this program is in its availability to those who need it the most and how that will inevitably be determined. Either way, any support and additional funding for the education system in order to support the learning of our future generations is a welcome announcement. The scheme is set to be available to all school sectors and commence in Term 1, 2021.

Whether it’s a walk in the park or a walk home from school, everyone has that friend or family member who must be the first one back. Local Author Lara Bury has brought this tale to life through her first children’s book, A Walk Like No Other. A Walk Like No Other tells the story of Sapphire and her race to be the first one home. Now you may think that’s easy, but not for Sapphire as she gets distracted by so many fun and crazy things along the way home. Will she be the first one home or not? “As a child, I loved reading Dr Seuss books. Green Eggs and Ham was my favourite. My brother and I used to time each other to see who could read it the fastest! Of course, I always won. A Walk Like No Other came about one day after writing another story called Come Be with Me. Maybe this will be my next book” explained Lara to the Jordan Springs Gazette. In a world of technology, Lara loves nothing more than the feeling of having a book in her hands where she can turn the pages to see what magic awaits her. “I love going to bookstores. I think it would be terrible if bookstores disappeared. Books should always be a part of everyone’s lives, especially for kids” she said. “I look forward to the day I can go into a bookstore with my books and read to the kids and see their faces light up and be happy. I want to show children that with a little imagination, the crazier the better, anything can happen! There are no rules in the world of imagination and books” she smiled. Lara’s book can be purchased through her website, www. larabury.com.au, Facebook (@laraburyauthor) and Instagram (@laraburyauthor). It is also available on Amazon.

Christmas Shining Brightly in Jordan Springs Homes across the country and the world come alive during the festive season, when all the Christmas lights displays are turned on, filling the neighbourhoods with brightly coloured lights and displays as far as the eye can see. Jordan Springs’ residents, the Burns family, are ready for their popular display to shine for a seventh straight year, whilst raising money for charity. The Fleet Avenue display, which had its first full light up for the season on the 28th November, will continue every night from 8pm until the end of December. “The lights display has been running since we moved into Jordan Springs on Christmas in 2013. We received the keys to our house a few days before Christmas that year, but still managed to have our lights up” explained Robert Burns to the Jordan Springs Gazette. This year, the Burns family lights display will be supporting. Make-A-Wish® Australia. Make-A-Wish® Australia is a charity that assists with making wishes come true for children with critical illnesses. 2020 has been a tough year for us all and Robert hopes that their display will help bring some much-needed cheer to the local community. “When you drive past our house, you will see the entire roof and gardens lit up with over 30 sets of lights used. We are planning to have a real Christmas tree in the front yard too” he said. So, what is it that Robert and the Burns family enjoy so much about this time of year? “For us, we absolutely love seeing the kids have fun and putting smiles on their faces when they see the lights. We have three children ourselves and the excitement that it brings is all worth it” smiled Robert. If you would like to get behind the Burns family with their amazing display and help raise funds for Make-A-Wish® Australia, you can donate online to their fundraising page at: https://fundraise.makeawish.org.au/fundraisers/ robertburns. r Feature Article: [Cover+Above] The Burns family display | Image: Robert Burns [Inset] This year, the Burns family will be supporting Make-A-Wish® Australia. We made it! We’re on the cusp of Christmas. This year it’s about ‘virtual carols’ and ‘set times’ with Santa, capped dining limits for Christmas lunch and ‘Zoom’ replacing interstate travel. While it is clearly apparent that Christmas will be ‘different’ this year, it’s still very much worthy of celebrating. We’re celebrating the joy of spending time, be it physical or virtual, with friends, family and loved ones. Making magic of moments that become forever embedded in our memories. This year be thankful and grateful for what we have, rather than what we don’t or should. Find the magic. The team here at the District Gazette are grateful for the support of both our readers and local business advertisers - without you the challenges of 2020 would have been amplified. From our family to yours, we wish you a safe and happy Christmas with better blessings in 2021. I’ll end it this year with this.....’In a world where you can be anything, be kind’ Enjoy Your Community News.
