Community Garden Celebrates 2 Years Last month marked an important local milestone, with the 2nd Anniversary of the planting of Ropes Crossing Community Garden. COVID has meant that they’ve had to put their expansion plans on ice, however, the garden is still going strong. Over the past two years, they have been supported by Laing & Simmons Ropes Crossing and Blacktown City Council of which they are grateful. “Personally, I’ve really enjoyed working with people from our community who have helped us each step of the way. Whether it was fund raising to build the beds or watering each day or helping dig out the beds at the end of a season, I’ve worked with lots of volunteers who have all helped keep us going” said Julian Munford of Ropes Crossing Community Garden to the Jordan Springs Gazette. “We’re fast approaching Summer, so we could really do with some more help with the watering. If you’d like to join our little collective, make some friends and share our garden, please give me a shout on our Facebook page” he continued. Julian is pleased with the success of the community project, and he is looking forward to the future. “We’ve had some low times with issues like vandalism, but the good times hugely outnumber the low times. Our group have grown tons of tomatoes, chillies, onions, garlic, carrots, egg plants, potatoes, corn, passion fruit and lots more. Next season, we’re hoping to start growing more native plants to help the people of Ropes Crossing learn more about what was here before the houses and the army base” Julian explained. The group recently held their AGM on 27th November in Ropes Crossing. If you’re interested in joining them, you can find them on Facebook for more information at: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/2241128489474993. r

Get your home or business ready, connect with NSW emergency services to stay informed and look out for each other,” he said. NSW SES has teamed up with Resilience NSW and Infrastructure NSW to develop an awareness campaign across the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley called Floods. What’s your plan? Participating businesses do not need to reapply. Those who want to join the program are encouraged to register, download the scanner app and get ready to redeem. Subscribe to weather alerts, know your evacuation routes and prepare a ‘get ready to go’ kit – these are some of the safety tips NSW emergency service agencies have shared ahead of the 2021 summer season. NSW SES and Resilience NSW have joined forces to remind locals in the Hawkesbury-Nepean Valley that storm season is upon us, a wet summer is forecast and there is increased risk of flooding across NSW, particularly within the region. NSW SES Commissioner Carlene York said the widespread flooding that impacted the region in March demonstrated not only the potential for devastation, but also the importance of preparing for these events. “It wasn’t that long ago we saw major flooding sweep through this area, impacting thousands of properties,” Commissioner York said. “There is the very real risk of a similar event happening again, which is why we need communities to know their risks and have a plan now. “It’s important those in the area know the early signs of potential flooding, are familiar with their key evacuation routes, follow advice of NSW SES, and prepare a ‘get ready to go’ kit ahead of time. “While you can’t fight floods, you can certainly prepare for them,” she said. Resilience NSW Executive Director, Operational Management and Partnerships, Dominic Lane, urged locals to use the start of summer to have a conversation with friends and families about being prepared for seasonal emergencies. “Our emergency service organisations do an incredible job keeping us safe, but they can only do so much. Being aware and prepared is everyone’s responsibility,

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith welcomed the announcement that Penrith will have more reasons to celebrate catching up with friends and family this summer with two additional Dine & Discover vouchers up for grabs for NSW residents. Stuart Ayres said the expanded program will support residents across the community and encourage economic activity as part of the government’s economic recovery strategy. “This is about supporting people to get out and have a meal or spend the day discovering their community while supporting businesses,” Stuart Ayres said. “The additional $250 million investment by the NSW Government will help businesses recover from months of restrictions and encourage people to enjoy what they love most. “We experienced the success of the Dine & Discover program when we reopened last time, which is why we are doubling down efforts with an additional two $25 vouchers - one for Dine and one for Discover venues. “We are backing our businesses and helping hip pockets by expanding the program, in addition to extending existing vouchers until the end of June 2022.” Stuart Ayres said the vouchers would again be delivered via the ServiceNSW app. “You’ll find them in your ServiceNSW

Local Netball Club Continues to Shine
Despite the 2021 Penrith District Netball Association (PDNA) season being disrupted by lockdown, Jordan Springs Netball Club still had many positives to draw on after their fifth season in the local competition. The local club continues to grow, and this season saw 230 players taking the court in 25 teams. There were 7 games played into the season, before it was stopped. This meant that there were no finals or premiers. There are normally 14 games plus finals played each year. 4 of the club’s teams – Under 9’s, Under 12’s, Under 13’s and a senior team, were all coming first on their ladders when the season was ended. This included the Under 12’s and Under 13’s being undefeated. “With an interrupted season, the club still had many highlights. We were handed the keys to Village Oval in Jordan Springs in May, which would become our new training home ground. 18 out of 25 of our teams were on track to qualify for the finals, had the season progressed. It was great to see many of our players and teams develop and improve their games” said Michelle Barnes, President of Jordan Springs Netball Club to the Jordan Springs Gazette. COVID restrictions also meant that there would be no physical end of season awards presentation this year. Instead, players were awarded their medals separately at a gift collection day last month. The new 2022 season will begin in April next year. Registrations will open on 4th January. “We’re looking forward to an undistracted year next season. We’d love to grow in all age groups, from the Under 7’s through to adults. The club are also looking to include boys in the Under 7’s through to the Under 12’s in the future. “A big shout out to our sponsors for their continued support. Thank you Everything Concrete, Fit4All, Novus Law Group, The Agency and JAW Trophies and Sports” ended Michelle. Dear Santa…
PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Monica Purcell | Family Facilitator Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services W: www.nepeancommunity.org.au E: info@nepeancommunity.org.au
Parental Burnout is Real, and we Need to Take it Seriously To feel ‘burnt out’ is to feel over-extended, exhausted, and that you nothing left to give. The feeling of ‘burnout’ is often accompanied by negative thoughts about yourself and people around you. Burning out can look different for different people. It may look loud and aggressive for some, and quiet and withdrawn for others. Regardless of how it presents, burnout is a serious problem for modern parents. The term‘burnout’was first coined to describe an occupational hazard for certain professionals such as social workers, nurses, and therapists. It was thought that the stress of constantly attending to others in need can lead to a state of fatigue and cynicism. In recent years, researchers have examined how burnout can happen in other contexts. Parenting is broadly considered one of the hardest jobs there is! And, unfortunately, parents around the world are reporting increasing symptoms of burnout. Parents who are burning out often feel they are ineffective or poor in their parenting role. This can relate to unrealistic expectations of parenting. Social media can be a source of distress for some parents when they perceive that everyone else seems to raise their children with no trouble at all. Parental burnout can also make it difficult to see your child in a positive light. There can be resentment or a feeling of emotional distancing that threatens the quality of the parent-child relationship if not addressed. It is important to know that if you are struggling in your parenting duties, you are not alone. Burnout is most often reported by parents of newborns, and at other points of significant change or transition in the parenting journey. It helps to ask other family members or friends to give you some practical or emotional relief during these times. You can also call the NSW Parent Line on 1300 130052 or Lifeline on 13 11 14 for a chat, advice, and referrals. Support is here and available. Burnout is not permanent. You can thrive again, with a team behind you.

With Christmas just around the corner, children across the country are putting together their wish lists. Ropes Crossing resident Mitchell Coleman has created Santa’s Letter Box, where children can send their letters and get a reply from Santa, right here in our local community. “The idea behind Santa’s Letter Box is to shed some happiness and positivity to everyone, after a really difficult year. Daniel and I have a lot of nieces and nephews and friends with young children that made us think about what this year would have been like for them. We’re trying to add a bit of whimsy to life and find a fun way for the kids to end the year on an exciting note” said Mitchell to the Jordan Springs Gazette. Every year, Mitchell adds to their Christmas lights display. He explained that it was also a natural progression to add the Letter Box. “Santa asked us to collect letters on his behalf, particularly as Australia Post has been busy. Our hope is to promote community spirit. We also have a few more things lined up for December that we haven’t yet announced” he smiled. Mitchell has already been promoting the local project on community social media pages, so that parents are aware of its existence. So, how does Santa’s Letter Box work you might ask? “The whole idea is for the kids to write their letter to Santa and for parents to include the child’s name, age and return addresses and Santa’s helpers can pop Santa’s response in their mailboxes closer to the date. Santa has also asked if we can give the option to pick up from our home if they prefer not to disclose an address. If parents would like to collect Santa’s letters, we request parents include their number on the back of the letter so that we can text them when they are ready to be collected” Mitchell clarified. Santa’s Letter Box is located on Gilroy Street in Ropes Crossing.

Run Santa Run Get your Lions Christmas Cakes and Puddings
There’s some big news from the North Pole this month, with Santa joining Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade (RFB) for the Annual Santa Run, taking place in Jordan Springs and Llandilo. Santa will be joining our local firefighters on board their fire trucks at Jordan Springs on Saturday 18th December, then at Llandilo on Friday 24th December (Christmas Eve). Whilst in Jordan Springs, they will visit various parks in both Jordan Springs and Jordan Springs East. As it is a busy time of year for Santa, he can only visit each location for 15 minutes. Christmas Eve’s trip in Llandilo will be around the streets. “Santa is happy to have photos with anyone and listen to any last-minute present requests. I spoke to him just the other day, and he said he is very excited to take time out of his busy schedule to come and see everyone in Jordan Springs and Llandilo. Santa even hinted that he may have a little present for kids that come and see him” smiled Captain Joshua Gow of Llandilo RFB. With lockdown restrictions continuing to be eased, Captain Joshua and his brigade can’t wait to spread some Christmas cheer with the man in the big red suit. “I think I speak on behalf of Llandilo Brigade when I say that we will enjoy spreading the Christmas spirit. Seeing all the kids and some parents come running out to see Santa, you can’t beat their reaction no matter how old you are. This year will be no different, except we have come out of a lockdown and a lot of the community has been through some tough times. I am hoping that Llandilo RFB and Santa will be able to bring joy to the community and boost the community spirit” Captain Joshua stated. Llandilo RFB will once again be Santa’s helpers this year and assisting Bunnings Warehouse North Penrith with the family night market on Thursday 9th December. Santa has organised their fire truck to take him to the market for a surprise visit. For maps, times, and updated information about the Annual Santa Run, visit Llandilo RFB on Facebook. r Feature Article: [Cover] Santa Claus with Llandilo RFB’s truck in Jordan Springs [Above] Santa and Llandilo RFB visiting Llandilo | Image: Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade

Could Migraines be Genetic? 12% of people live with migraine, 88% do not. Why? Is it their genes? Is it their lifestyle? Research shows both genes and lifestyle (non-shared environment) contribute significantly to their risk of getting migraines. Using identical-twin studies, researchers found when one twin gets migraines and the second doesn’t, genes contribute (30–60%), and non-shared-environment about 35–55% to the risk of migraine. The genetic component is called ‘heritability’. Importantly, a heritability figure provides absolutely no measure of how sensitive any trait (including migraine) is to changes in environment. So even if a trait such as migraine were 100% heritable, whether the trait is expressed, i.e., whether someone gets migraines, may still depend completely on the environment in which the person lives. ‘Concordance’ describes the likelihood of two people with shared genes developing the same disorder. Research looking at 1,300 twins found that: 1. Migraine concordance rates were: a. 26% for identical twins –they have identical genes b. 13% for non-identical twins – they share 50% the same genes
c. similar for male and female twin sets 2. For identical twins, the chance of another family member having migraines was: a. 31% if neither twin had migraines b. 45% if one had migraines c. 60% if both twins had migraines Study authors concluded the influence of genes on risk of getting migraines was much lower than previously thought. Put another way, when one identical twin has migraines, the other twin doesn’t 74% of the time. When a non-identical twin has migraines, the other twin doesn’t 87% of the time. This research seems clear. Since identical twins have identical genes, the only factor differentiating a twin with migraine from a twin without, is environment/lifestyle differences. These encompass diet, sleep-sufficiency and quality, good-stress but not bad-stress, good levels of sunshine and vitamin D, appropriate exercise, good relationships, etc. All of these are within a migraineurs control. The very hopeful message here is that even if your genetics are 100% the same, you don’t have to get migraines. Genes don’t decide your fate.
FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
What a roller coaster it has been during the last two years. To celebrate the birth of Jesus, the Christ, within this context certainly gives a new perspective to our Christmas in 2021. To many the festive season is just that: festive. But the ongoing effects of the virus pandemic certainly places a check on that. Look deeper: Christmas is a time in which to reflect on the events in Bethlehem. Israel - that occurred some 2,000 plus years ago. A young Palestinian woman was betrothed to Joseph and asked why was she pregnant when she had ‘known no man’? Joseph himself, it is recorded stayed and supported Mary, even although he had considered to walk away. We can ask the same question and find answer when we reflect on what transpired. It is in the life, death and the coming to life again, a basis for that reflection is found. Within the hurly burly of everyday life, with all its ups and downs, Mary and Joseph found meaning which evolved from the virgin birth. Joseph disappears early from the reflections on events, but Mary stays faithful to Jesus, even staying with him as he died on the cross having be accused by the religious authority of the day with blasphemy and the political powers with usurping community order. But our reflection becomes a challenge when it is noted that in Jesus’ resurrection a new dimension and meaning is given to the life we live. That challenge is to ask who Jesus is. He presented himself as completing the long religious saga of Semitic belief which culminated in the Law expounded by Moses and the further development by the teachers involved with prophesy from around 800 years before Jesus’ birth and onwards. With Summer now here, it’s the perfect time of year to enjoy the walking, cycling, and exercising trails we have in our local community. Here’s a list of places to visit: • Jordan Springs Lake (Access via Lakeside Parade and Cullen Avenue, Jordan Springs) You can take a walk around the man-made lake and view water birds. The walk takes approximately 30 minutes and includes a children’s playground with modern multi-age play equipment and sand softfall. The walk continues to Greenwood Park where there is a fenced off-leash dog park. • Wianamatta Regional Park (Mainwaring Street, Ropes Crossing) There are walking, jogging, and cycling tracks available, as well as a picnic shelter and open grass clearings for picnics. • Mountain View Reserve (Access via Olive Lane or Nepean Street, Cranebrook) This is a restored Regionally Significant Wetland and adjoining area of endangered bushland which supports a range of birds and native animals. There are several walking tracks throughout the reserve – both formal paths and informal tracks, which can be linked up to for a good walking loop. The reserve also has a bird hide for bird watchers, and a viewing platform looking out over the Penrith Lakes and foothills of the Blue Mountains. • Sydney International Regatta Centre (Old Castlereagh Road, Cranebrook) Recharge your batteries and get active at Sydney International Regatta Centre. Their range of fun activities both in and out of the water are sure to keep you and the family entertained. • Waterside (Lakeview Drive, Cranebrook) There are several walking tracks around the lakes of the estate. • Wianamatta Nature Reserve (Vincent Road, Cranebrook) This reserve created in October 2011, covers 181 hectares, and includes walking paths. Man Charged over Fatal Two-Vehicle Crash A man has been charged following an investigation into a fatal crash in Sydney’s west last month. About 7.30am on Tuesday 2 November 2021, emergency services were called to The Northern Road, near Spinks Road, Llandilo, following reports a truck and car had collided. The driver of the car, a 28-year-old woman, died at the scene. The driver of the truck – a 20-year-old man – sustained minor injuries and was taken to Westmead Hospital for treatment and mandatory testing. Officers from Nepean Police Area Command established a crime scene and officers from the Crash Investigation Unit commenced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident. Following inquiries, the 20-year-old man was arrested at Mt Druitt Police Station (Monday 15 November 2021). He was charged with dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous and negligent driving occasioning death. The man was granted conditional bail to appear before Mt Druitt Local Court late last month.
For the first time ever, local Veronica Leonardo will be hosting a photography exhibition to raise awareness within her community and give back to Cancer Council NSW who supported her through her own cancer journey in 2016. Veronica was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 40 - having no family history of the disease. Her diagnosis had a huge impact on her plan to start a family and Veronica feels so grateful for the support she was provided by Cancer Council NSW through this challenging time. “My breast cancer diagnosis was a surprise because I felt like I was generally doing the right thing. I remember saying to my surgeon that once the storm passes, I would try to support other people through their own cancer journey. “Many people assume every aspect of cancer treatment is covered by public health, without realising the life-saving treatment is covered but everything outside of it isn’t, such as lymphedema services”. With the kind support of photographer, Karen Jack from InTouch Photography in Penrith, the exhibition will take place at 107 Projects from Monday 24th January 2022 to Sunday 6th February 2022 and features 10 women who are at various stages of their breast cancer journey, illustrating with pride their scars and embracing life post cancer. Their journeys range from 2 years to 24 years in remission. Karen volunteered her time, expertise, and patience to create a truly memorable experience for everyone involved and Veronica hopes the exhibition will give hope and inspiration to women currently facing their own diagnosis. A celebration evening will also be held at Club Parramatta on Wednesday 2nd February 2022, ahead of World Cancer Day. It is hoped this event will raise $5,000 to go towards Cancer Council NSW to help continue their support for cancer patients like Veronica. Across NSW, it is estimated that approximately 6,240 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women in Australia and thankfully, through research, improvements in early detection and treatment for breast cancer have led to a significant increase in survival rate in recent decades. With screening centres across NSW closed due to the extended lockdown, now more than ever it is important to be breast aware and consult your doctor if you notice any unusual changes to your breasts. To purchase tickets to the celebration evening, go to https:// events.humanitix.com/2022-breast-cancer-exhibitioncelebration. r The exhibition begins next month | Image: Karen Jack (InTouch Photography) | Article: Cancer Council NSW

Santa Photos With Your Pets Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2021 to take photos with your pets. Santa will be here from Wednesday 1st December until Friday 24th December 2021, Mon-Fri (9am-6pm) and on Saturdays (9am-2pm). Due to the Coronavirus crisis, Santa will be wearing a mask underneath his beard. We usually have a staff member taking the photograph of your pet with Santa, however to minimize the number of people in the room, we will require you to take your own photograph using your phone/camera, or with our camera where we can print off the photo for you. Only 1 client per pet will be allowed in the room at one time. Santa will be photographed with pets only. For a $10 cash donation, your Santa photo is presented in a Christmas card, with all proceeds donated to the Guide Dogs NSW. We have Christmas themed props for your pet’s photos (e.g. hats and scarves), feel free to bring in your own outfits. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. Proactive Pets Introduces K9 Easy Dine Tracey Morrison is a Homeopath and Animal Health Practitioner and the proud owner of a local business called Proactive Pets. She has a lot of things going on at Proactive Pets and in amongst the range of services and products that she offers is her great passion for promoting good, natural, healthy alternatives for our canine companions. “I have studied Small Animal Nutrition through the National College of Traditional Medicine. Upon completion, I was amazed to discover that research showed most commercially prepared dog food was nutritionally lacking in essential vitamins and minerals which is paramount to sustaining long term health and longevity. So, I set about creating my own recipe and K9 Easy Dine was born!” explained Tracey. K9 Easy Dine is her own blend of nutritious, balanced, homemade doggy dinners. Not only are they full of raw goodness, but the dogs find it utterly delicious. Through careful research and study, Tracey has developed a highly sustainable, protein rich meal that her dog thrives on. It contains fresh, human grade varieties of meat (including beef, chicken, and kangaroo), carefully selected vegetables and other secret ingredients accompanied by specially formulated bone broth and a dessert that is full of healthy bacteria to promote good gut health. “This Christmas, we will all be sitting down with loved ones for a delicious lunch so why not supply that same loved up meal for your special fur family member? I am currently making Christmas doggy lunch boxes and will be taking orders for local delivery. They will contain a nutritious 3-course Christmas lunch, healthy snacks for over the day and a few other special little gifts for your fur baby. The gift boxes are only $49 but very limited. If you would like to find out more or place an order for your Christmas doggy lunch box, please either email me at tracey@proactivepets.com.au or call on 0419 813620” she said. For further information about their services and products, please visit their website at www.proactivepets.com.au. r Natural goodness your dogs will love | Image/Article: Tracey Morrison
