An important sporting milestone for the local community was achieved recently, with the Jordan Springs Netball Club coming together to play their first games as a new club in the Penrith District Netball Association this season. “We were happily surprised with the overwhelming response from the community. We had anticipated having 5 teams in our first year and we ended up with 11. We are still receiving inquiries! Our first games went well. We looked amazing at the grounds, and we received many compliments from people at the courts” said Michelle Barnes, President of Jordan Springs Netball Club. The support from the community for the newly formed club meant that 11 teams, consisting of 4 senior teams and 7 junior teams (Under 7’s, 2 x Under 9’s, Under 10’s, Under 12’s, Under 14’s and Under 15’s) were able to take to the court at Jamison Park for the opening rounds this year. FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
No matter how successfully we may be able to solve many problems which we will face in the future, one factor with problematic consequences will remain constant: we are going to have to live closer and closer with more people more and more. As such personal relations will take an ever increasing significance and social problems will increase rather than decrease. The difficulties towards which we are heading [note the increasing population in Penrith for example] in our social life may be considered purely natural, but for the Christian solutions must be found in the supernatural and in reality answers to social problems can be centred in the doctrine of the Trinity. The Trinity is the heart of Christian belief. It is vital and essential although it is admitted it is a mystery: a God who is not a mystery would be man’s God that is no God at all. If God is above nature obviously man who is in nature cannot completely understand the reality that is God. The doctrine is not a mere abstract formula. It is the most convincing indication which we have that God is the fullness of being, the fullness of perfection. This revealed nature shows what is technically known as fecundity: the ability to give and share with others-is a perfection. Humanity’s fecundity – the giving and sharing of oneself, our products, our services, as it shows itself in our lives is basically good- it reflects the nature of God. It is only in the Trinity that absolute completeness of personal giving can be found as in the Trinity the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit give completely to the other that each is said to indwell

in the other two: here is found the culmination of personal immanence and sharing. The moral of the Trinitarian doctrine is that social unity and perfection can never be successful at the expense of destroying relative distinctions- although it can only be achieved by avoiding absolute separation and difference. Intimate association not solitude is our proper end. Nothing is worse than loneliness. As such the perfection of life is enrichment and fullness not in repression and impoverished uniformity. The grace which the Trinity makes available as we seek to live peaceably in each other’s company, results from our true worship and seek help in the fullness of the Trinity. Rev John Hebblewhite

How Do Empathy?
You
Teach
Children
It is difficult to teach empathy to children under the age of 4 years. This is; because the logical, rational, thinking part of the brain (cerebral cortex) doesn’t start heating up until the age of 4 years. To demonstrate empathy, you need to have something called ‘theory of mind’, that is you need to understand that other people have thoughts and feelings of their own. Young children are egocentric, they think that the universe revolves around them. Kids start to develop theory of mind from about the age of 4. Some kids are better at it than others, depending on their temperament and personality. Children who have autism or other disabilities/disorders may take a bit longer to develop theory of mind. The ability to take in another person’s perspective really kicks in around Grade 3, but it is still a slow process. It requires a lot of prompting and role modelling. Here is how I teach it at school… 1. Noticing how another person feels (facial expression, body language, what they say, the situation).“You look ….” “Are you OK?” . “How are you going today, you seem…” 2. Listening. This is where you say nothing, and you LISTEN. 3. Show empathy. “If that happened to me, I would feel…”. “I’m sorry that happened to you.” 4. Offer assistance. “How can I help?” If the person wants to be left alone, allow that, but check on them a bit later. If you are worried about the person, speak to a trusted adult. No child or young person should feel like they are responsible for another child or young person. What’s unhelpful in responding to someone else’s strong feelings? • Being dismissive – saying things like ‘you’ll be alright’, ‘suck it up’, ‘at least…’, ‘get over it’, ‘don’t be a cry baby’, ‘man up’, ‘stop being a drama queen’. • Talking about yourself. • Telling them what they should do. • Changing the subject. • Gossiping or spreading rumours. People who try to push others out of their strong feelings are usually uncomfortable with those feelings, and are attempting to make themselves feel better. Head over to the blog https://handsheartsminds.wordpress. com/ for some great videos about empathy, and a poster on this topic. They are all under the heading of “Skills for Kids”.

Jordan Springs Netball Club Takes to the Court sure that everything was ready to go for their first season. The hard work and dedication had paid off, with all the proud smiles from the players in a sea of blue uniforms during their inaugural march past. With the Club announcing that all of their teams are full for this year, they still have sponsoring packages available. “We have been lucky enough to source some really great sponsors. We still have a few packages available if there are any local businesses that would like some exposure. We are still looking for some umpires to help out too” explained Michelle.

As President, Michelle has set some lofty goals for the year with the club well on their way to achieving them; “Being our first year, my goal was to ensure that we had everything in place to get our teams on the court and playing. To do this, we needed to find coaches and umpires. Without these volunteers, our teams cannot play”. “My other main goal is to get as many umpires qualified as possible, so we are not on the back foot next year. Our Umpires Convenor Rebecca is working really hard on this, and I applaud her efforts so far”.
Jordan Springs Trialling Twilight Market
Twilight markets are becoming very on trend, especially the food trucks. Who wouldn’t want to skip the drudgery of dinner shopping, preparing, cooking, eating and tidying up? It seems like the folks in Jordan Springs are hoping to convert their Sunday market into a Saturday night one. The idea started back in April when the normal market would have fallen on Easter Sunday so the organisers moved it to the night before. There was a great response with many people asking to shift it permanently. The May market was the second time at night and there were many new and diverse vendors. “It’s our first time and what a lovely atmosphere”, said Denise Coulon from Blackberry Cottage Bath and Body, “it brought people out for dinner, nice community spirit”. Tucked near the jumping castle was Michelle’s Plaster Painting, where children can be heard oohing and aahing over the paintable plasters, as they try to choose one. Michelle seemed quite happy with the night time arrangement. “We’re going to give it a try and see how we go”. 21 year old Saiorse Ward was attending her first ever market with her cake and cupcake business Sift’d. “I’m testing the waters”, said the young business woman who was delighted to have completely sold out of all of her cupcakes. Near the entrance was the red polka dotted, bric-a-brac vintage delight called Retro Rosie, a ‘cafe bar on wheels’ that started life as a caravan. Folks were queuing and vying for warm pumpkin soup, apple crumble, hot chocolate cake, old-fashioned milkshakes, coffees and pies just to name a few. It was Rosie’s first time at the Jordan Springs Lakeside Twilight Market. “We heard about it”, said owner Lexie Barnes, “so we came along to check it out. The soup and all of the desserts have sold out!” The next one is scheduled for Saturday 17th of June. Find them on Facebook. You Can Dance Takes on L.A! You Can Dance Performing Arts School in Emu Plains recently had an entourage of 110 students and their families embark on an incredible Cheer and Dance adventure to Los Angeles. The itinerary was jam packed with tours, family time and extraordinary learning opportunities for their students. They participated in workshops at Disneyland with their Youth Performing Arts program lead by Aussie Josh Horner, with World Champion Cheerleading coaches at ‘Pacific Coast Magic Cheer’ (one of the most successful cheerleading facilities in America) and at ‘The Edge Performing Arts’ with L.A’s best Dance instructors. You Can Dance’s students also performed on Hollywood Boulevard at Madame Tussauds and of course Disneyland! One of the highlights of their trip was competing in an All American Cheerleading competition at the Anaheim Convention Centre ‘The American Showcase’, where they won a host of awards, taking home a swag of banners and prizes. Several YCD teams also placed 1st in their categories making them Nationals Champions! “We opened up this opportunity to all families at YCD and had a mix of students from the ages of 5 to 25 and we incorporated into competition teams in both cheer and dance, as well as dance performances! Some incredible lifetime memories were made in our unforgettable journey – what an opportunity for our kids! We are beyond proud of our students and thank ‘Gullivers Sport Travel’ and local company ‘Cheer/Dance Travel’ for tailor making an amazing itinerary, a once in a lifetime for our students” said studio director Jane Houlihan.
Our Magic Macy Wins Mulgoa Idol Local Magician Macy Hope, AKA Magic Macy, and her assistant Fabulous Frankie, were recently crowned winners of the 2017 Mulgoa Idol Talent Quest, after performing at the 14th Annual Charity Jazz Night at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club in Luddenham last month. The annual event organised by Dr Adrian Sheen, featured seven talented acts, with Macy and Frankie winning the prized Mulgoa Idol Mug in a night of entertainment that raised valuable funds for Vatu Health, a charity that supports health care on Fiji’s Coral Coast. “I loved performing on stage in Mulgoa Idol. It was great to see the other acts perform as well” said Macy. “Macy spent a lot of time practicing for Mulgoa Idol. She started planning her act a couple of months in advance and as it got closer, Macy and Frankie practiced daily after school and a bit on weekends. We are so proud of their achievement” said Alison Hope, Macy’s Mother. Magic Macy’s next competition will be at the Melbourne Magic Festival in July, where she has entered in the Australian Junior Championships of Close-up Magic.

Shocking Electricity Price Rise Will Mean a Cold Winter for Many Wholesale electricity price rises are set to increase bills by as much as 20 percent by July, and as a consequence, St Vincent de Paul Society NSW is anticipating a dramatic increase in the number of requests for help this winter. Launching the 2017 Vinnies Winter Appeal, the Society State President Denis Walsh said this massive price hike will see more people struggling to pay their utility bills. “The costs that make up many of the essentials of life are rising faster than the CPI, in particular, the cost of housing, health and utilities. The anticipated energy price surge will hit the hip pockets of low and middle income earners really badly,” says Mr Walsh. The average electricity debt has already risen from $529 in June 2014 to $631 in June 2015, according to the Australian Energy Regulator (AER). “The Society relies heavily on donations from the public especially in winter when families are forced to choose between buying shoes, a hot meal or paying their heating bill,” he says. “Last winter the Society distributed over $4 million worth of assistance to people experiencing disadvantage. We anticipate a much greater need this year.” And yet, says St Vincent de Paul Society NSW CEO Jack de Groot, individuals and families manage to pull through, given the right supports. “Ordinary people are able to make an extraordinary difference in their local communities. So often we see how people, at their
time of greatest need, assisted by Vinnies members, staff and volunteers, and supported by our generous donors, can do heroic things together to help rebuild their lives,” says Mr de Groot. “This winter more people like Emma will turn to us to help them manage their sky-rocketing household budgets following the electricity price hikes. “What happened to Emma and her children could happen to anyone. Fortunately for this family, Vinnies was there to help them when they needed a hand-up most.” Emma was living in crisis accommodation, hiding with her sons from an abusive husband. While she was there, and making progress, a series of health issues with her sons caused a major setback to her own wellbeing. However, with support from Jack, her case manager, and the other volunteers at Vinnies, Emma regained her confidence and her prospects for the future. Jack assisted in securing the best treatment her son’s rare medical condition and helped the family find new accommodation. Together they planned a budget for ongoing health and energy costs so that she could keep a roof over her children’s heads through the cold winter months. “It is heart-breaking that the numbers we serve are increasing every year. We rely on the generosity of the community. Without their compassion and financial contribution during our Winter Appeal we would not be able to help men, women and children remain warm and fed and in a safe place.” Please donate to the Vinnies 2017 Winter Appeal and help us continue to support ordinary heroes. Dealing with the Physical Symptoms of Grief The emotional symptoms are expected but people are surprised when grief manifests itself in physical symptoms as well. When this happens it can be very distressing. A few common physical symptoms are: • Fatigue and sleeplessness – Grief is physically exhausting, you feel fatigued all the time and want to sleep but sleep alludes you. • Aches and pains – sometimes these get so bad that you feel like you have a heavy flu. Your body is tense, fatigued and you’re not sleeping; causing these aches and pains. • Shortness of breath and tight chest – sometimes is a constant symptom and sometimes comes and goes. • Headaches – grief is filled with stress and tension, which results in headaches. • Forgetfulness – Losing keys, forgetting appointments etc. can be very distressing. In most people this subsides with time. • Lacking focus – Not being able to take on new information or zoning out and thinking of your loved one or your life without them is common. • Changes in appetite or tummy problems are also common. Tips to relieve grief symptoms: • Relaxation, massage, meditation, yoga, reading, deep breathing, to-do lists, routines, walking, eating healthy food, try to get 7-8 hours of sleep. • Feel your feelings and don’t let anyone tell you how you
should be feeling. • You might need extra help from your doctor, dietitian or counsellor. • Have a good support network of friends and family. Remember, you’re not alone and talking about your grief will help you learn to cope with it, feel heard and understood, which creates closeness with others.
My April article on self-care was received negatively by one reader who texted me about the impact on her family. If one person was upset, I’m sure there are more. The offending parts were: 1. “I was shocked to read that research shows that swearing can reduce physical pain and lift self esteem”. I don’t advocate swearing. 2. “Watching funny cat videos while the boss isn’t watching boosts productivity, yay!” This was tongue in cheek and was meant to be a joke, not a direction. Running for Her Life
Picking up the pieces and moving on after the death of a spouse is incredibly difficult. Kathy Rae, mother of four sons, was widowed in 2010. After the death of her husband she decided to hit the ground running, literally. Having been a running enthusiast since her teenage years, things slowed down quite a bit after marriage and motherhood. Soon after she lost her partner, she threw herself back into the sport and has become an inspiration to so many in the process. “I think that if I just stayed at home and did nothing and was depressed after my husband died”, said Kathy, “then it would have been a loss of two lives”.
It seems quite fitting that I find myself on an early Sunday morning, keeping pace with her and the other fit ladies from the Jordan Springs and Surrounds Women’s Community Group, on one of their frequent Bridge to Bridge walks. While we walk, her story unfolds, and I am in awe. Kathy currently holds the title as the first and only woman to have participated in every single parkrun in NSW, having completed 171 park runs in 60 different locations! This takes her all over the state. “I travel everywhere”, she said with excitement, but that wasn’t always the case. She recalled a time when she travelled to Melbourne for the City2Sea run. “It was scary to be in a motel alone, travelling alone, I wasn’t sure I could do it. It was the start of me going places on my own”. She has since participated in countless events on numerous occasions: the Blackmores Sydney Running Festival, the Blacktown M7 Running Festival, the Western Sydney Marathon at the Regatta Centre Penrith, City2Surf Sydney, City2Sea Melbourne and the Sydney Marathon Clinic. She is currently on the committees of the Penrith and Nepean River parkruns. Asked why she does it and her answer is this: “I think it’s important to be a participant in life”. After our walk, we shared coffee, breakfast and laughs. Then, I went home and signed up to parkrun. All because of Kathy Rae. Kathy Rae at St Peters parkrun| Image: Paul Wilcock. Article: Lisa Powell

Adopt a Friend for Life! Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 3 lovely kittens ready for adoption now! The kittens are 3 months old. There are 2 female tortoiseshell colour and 1 ginger male. They have medium long coats. They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including; providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit. Check out our website for more information www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.

Welcome to June! This month’s publication brings you a whole host of wonderful articles, for locals, by locals, about locals. Our delicious Winter recipe on page 12 is sure to tick all the boxes to keep the family satisfied on these chilly nights. A traditional favourite with a twist! And, if you need a pick me up and a bit of motivation to see beyond the dark clouds, do yourself a favour and take a read of Kathy Rae’s story on page 15. What a woman! Like many of you before us, we are currently renovating our home. Last month saw us de-clutter at a grand scale and give the nod of approval for work to begin on our first stage of works, Bathroom, Kitchen, and Pool. While I am very excited to be dabbling in a bit of creative design around the home, all I can think of is that we’ll be bathing in a portable shower during the bitter cold month of June. Who’s idea was this anyway? “Be silly, Be fun, Be different, Be crazy, Be You. Life is too short to be anything else”. For now, sit back and warm your toes by the heater and enjoy your Community News.
