Bill Ball Oval Next To Receive Amenities Building Upgrade Penrith Cricket Club and Penrith Junior Cricket Association will soon be able to enjoy a new amenities building at Bill Ball Oval in Cook Park, St Marys, with construction now in progress. The existing building will be replaced with a modern facility designed for a range of sports groups, including two change rooms designed to be inclusive for all users, a change room for officials, canteen, storage, an accessible toilet, and first aid and administration areas. An additional public toilet will also be constructed to service the adjacent playspace. Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said the new amenities building will meet national and state sporting facility guidelines to better support the sports clubs, associations and schools who use the oval. “These groups will be able to operate more efficiently and be better supported to offer services such as the canteen. The new amenities building will also help facilitate participation among girls and women who were not catered for in the old structure,” Cr Hitchen said. The upgrade is being funded by Council in partnership with the NSW Government through the NSW ICC T20 World Cup 2020 Cricket Legacy Fund, Cricket Australia and Cricket NSW through the Australian Cricket Infrastructure Fund and the Penrith Cricket Club. Minister for Sport Stuart Ayres said the project will help to increase participation opportunities. “The NSW Government is committed to ensuring that grassroots cricketers benefit from Sydney hosting ICC T20 World Cup matches,” Mr Ayres said. “This project is a great example of improving facilities to help increase participation opportunities, improve female player pathways and enable hosting of elite cricket events.” Member for Londonderry Prue Car said “It’s great to see investment in these facilities in St Marys to support grassroots sport.” Council has upgraded nine buildings over the past two years to meet national and state sporting facility guidelines, with a further nine to receive upgrades. This project was identified through Council’s Sport and Recreation Strategy, which is a 15-year road map for the future provision of sport, play, recreation and open space across the City. Get Ready For Vivid Sydney 2022 Sydney has lit up and visitors are reminded to plan their visit to enjoy the largest festival of light, music and ideas in the Southern Hemisphere. Minister for Enterprise, Investment and Trade, Tourism and Sport and Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said it was full steam ahead with Vivid Sydney 2022 now underway. “With more than 200 events scheduled, there is something for everyone,” Mr Ayres said. “The Vivid Sydney 2022 program bursts with exciting events, incredible music performances and fantastic light installations and 3D projections. Vivid Sydney draws millions of people into the Harbour City’s CBD, which will provide a shot in the arm for businesses and a smile on the faces of festival-goers. “Visitors should be mindful of the festival’s popularity on weekends, with Monday to Wednesday nights the best choice for a more relaxed atmosphere. “This is a time to come together, to shake off the last couple of years and to get reacquainted with the beauty of Sydney and be inspired and amazed by Vivid Sydney 2022.” Minister for Transport and Veterans David Elliott said public transport was not only the best way to travel to and from this spectacular event, it would also be part of the action this year. “For the first time ever, Central Station and the Goods Line Tunnel, a forgotten historical landmark, will be part of Vivid 2022, offering an illuminating glimpse into Sydney’s rich transport history,” Mr Elliott said. “The Goods Line Tunnel beneath Central Station, which first opened in 1855, will be transformed into a modern convergence of lights, lasers and smoke effects with more than 100 laser lights - the largest laser installation in Vivid Sydney history. “Central Station’s iconic ceiling and clock tower will also be lit up while the Grand Concourse will be the stage for a series of free live music performances each Saturday night during the festival. “Extra public transport services will operate during the festival as large numbers of visitors are expected to travel to the CBD to enjoy Australia’s largest light show spectacular,” Mr Elliott said. Mr Elliott said there would be some changes to public transport services during the festival as a safety precaution to manage the crowds expected around the harbour foreshore. Circular Quay will be relocated to stops at Martin Place on Fridays from 6 pm and weekends from 5 pm. Light rail services will run until late each night of the festival, but will not run between Town Hall and Circular Quay from 6 pm on Fridays and 5 pm on weekends. On Saturday nights and Sunday 12 June during the long weekend, train passengers will not be able to alight at Circular Quay Station between 6 pm and 11 pm, festival attendees should alight at Wynyard, St James or Martin Place stations instead and walk to the harbour. Vivid Sydney runs for 23 days until Saturday 18 June and guests can enjoy the Light Walk each night from 6 – 11pm. r

Chloe’s US Dream Ropes Crossing’s Chloe Zrebiec is about to have a dream come true, representing her country, and competing in her very first beauty pageant overseas in the US. Chloe will be competing in the Regency International Pageant at The Golden Nugget in Las Vegas, commencing on July 26th, 2022, and concluding on July 30th, 2022. Last year, Chloe competed virtually in the Regency International Pageant and placed in the Top 5. As a result of this success, she was crowned Teen South Pacific Regency International 2022 and will now be given a second opportunity to compete in the competition, this time overseas. “This experience will give Chloe the opportunity to share her journey with modelling and pageants as well as allowing her to speak about her platform and what she advocates for; that being mental health. She is passionate about providing a supportive space for people to share their feelings and letting them know that it is okay to not be okay” explained Keri Keightley, Chloe’s Mum. “Chloe is excited to be able to show the world what she is capable of, all whilst proudly representing her country” she added. In preparation for the US trip, Chloe and the rest of Team Australia are all doing their best to fundraise in the short amount of time that they have. From a huge raffle (being drawn on June 13th) to Bunnings barbecues, any support is welcomed. “Chloe is also looking for sponsors who are willing to help her make it over to Las Vegas. If anyone is interested in sponsoring her or is interested in buying raffle tickets, you can contact her on her social media, or via email. The smallest amount can help, and she is so grateful for the support of her local community” Keri said. Viva Las Parkes It may be a long way from Memphis, Tennessee, but Parkes in the State’s Central West is home to the Parkes Elvis Festival, an annual event celebrating the life and music of Elvis Presley. Jordan Springs resident and Elvis Tribute Artist, Steve Head, wowed audiences after performing at the popular festival. This year’s event was held from the 20th to 24th April, making a triumphant comeback since it was cancelled in 2021 due to the pandemic. It is normally held annually in January, coinciding with Elvis’ birthday. Steve has performed at the festival every year since 2004, a total of 17 years. He has only missed one event, being last year’s cancellation. “I was performing and working at the Parkes Railway Bowling Club daily. I ran the unofficial Tribute Artist Afterparty at the Royal Hotel, running till 4:00am and 5:00am on the last two nights of the festival. These parties on their own have gained a legendary status at the festival for the last 7 years,” said Steve. He’s excited to be back once again performing to audiences. “It was a real buzz to be back after the COVID postponements. Entertainers got hit quite hard. Amongst the festival goers, the vibe was amazing. It was great to see such joy and excitement for people to see their favourite tribute artists after two years of mayhem” he replied. “A chance to put on the blue suede shoes and live on the edge of reality without suspicious minds for a week with amazing people and forgetting daily struggles for a moment” Steve continued. Keep an eye out for a very special event for the release of the new Baz Luhrmann Elvis biopic on 25th June at The Richmond Regent Cinema. “I will be performing. It’s sure to be a big night for Elvis fans” he ended. r [Top]: Steve performing at the Parkes Railway Bowling Club [Left] Steve’s Afterparty with festival goers and tribute artists | Images Supplied by Steve Head

Infant Mental Health Awareness Week: What Do Babies Need Most?
Babies have long been misunderstood. When the field of psychology emerged in the early twentieth century, the earliest psychologists thought maybe infants just needed a reliable food source. Later, psychologists John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth first sketched out the idea of “attachment”. Attachment refers to an infant’s need to connect emotionally with their primary caregiver. Babies know they are at the mercy of an adult to have their needs met. In the first 18 months of life, infants cannot even carry themselves from one place to another, let alone feed themselves! Babies communicate by facial expressions and movements. These “cues” signal an unmet need. For example, a baby may jerk its body and pucker its lips when it needs the breast or bottle. Babies experience optimal mental and physical health when their parents read their cues and respond appropriately most of the time. Thanks to brain imaging, we now know there is a massive brain growth in the first 5 years. A newborn’s brain weighs around 400 grams (approx. the size of an orange). By the age of 3, the size of a child’s brain has more than doubled to about 1100 grams (approx. the size of a pineapple). Experiencing a warm and responsive relationship with a parent in the early years builds healthy brains. Parents often feel confused or frustrated when their baby cries, especially when there is a lot of crying! Crying expresses the need for physical and emotional closeness to parents. Babies experience a lot of stress if they are left to cry alone. Large, frequent doses of hormones associated with the stress response, such as cortisol, can interfere with brain growth. Therefore, it is important to minimise stress by responding to baby’s cries promptly whenever possible. In summary, what a baby needs most is you. If you are struggling with anything mentioned in this article, you can consult an early childhood nurse by calling Tresillian Parent Help Line on 1300 272 73. Infant Mental Health Awareness Week runs every June to highlight the importance of babies' emotional wellbeing and development. Find out more at aaimh.org.au.

Local Heidi Stenschke is set to launch Hypnoga™ this month, her signature program that combines the principles of hypnosis with the asana of yoga, at Ropes Crossing. The 7-week program will take place from June 6th to July 25th, weekly on Mondays at Ropes Crossing Community Hub. There will be 2 classes offered each Monday, 10am to 11am and 6.30pm to 7.30pm. More classes will be introduced subject to demand. “I am proud to launch Hypnoga™ in my local community, where I grew up” explained Heidi to the Jordan Springs Gazette. Hypnoga™ is an experience of the physical practise of yoga, embedded with the principles of hypnotic linguistics, offering empowerment at the unconscious level. Hypnoga™ is an integration of both the conscious and unconscious mind. “Each experience is centred around a theme that offers opportunity for the unconscious mind to accept empowering suggestions based on the theme of the day. The key difference is the adaptation of hypnotic linguistics and the pre-frame that it is ok to ‘do you’” she said. Heidi started teaching group fitness classes and providing personal training services in 2012. She became a practicing Hypnotherapist in 2020 and a registered Yoga teacher in 2021. “I was inspired to create a safe space for individual expression in a group setting. A safe space where each student’s version of an instruction was perfect, even if it varied from the person next to them” Heidi reflected. “This, coupled with the principles of Hypnosis, means there is greater potential for acceptance of the presented embedded commands and empowering suggestions, at the unconscious level. All students get to decide whether they want to accept the suggestion – after all, this is how hypnosis works” she ended. There is a fee of $15 per class or $70 for the full program, in-person. Whilst online, it is $12 per class or $55 for the full program. For more information, you can contact Heidi on 0404 095095, via email at info@hypnoga.org, search Hypnoga on Facebook, @Hyp_noga on Instagram or online at hypnoga.org.

Arlene’s Greatest Supporters Jordan Springs’ MMA fighter Arlene Blencowe has just returned home from Hawaii, after she fought Cris Cyborg in Bellator 279. The result may not have gone to plan, however, having her family by her side made for one of the most memorable experiences of her career. Competing for the Bellator Women’s Featherweight Title, Blencowe lost to Cyborg in a fiercely fought bout lasting five rounds. “Fighting Cris brought out a different toughness in me and something I hadn’t yet seen within myself, which is super exciting moving forward in my career. She is definitely my toughest opponent, which I guess is why they say she is the GOAT of the Women’s Featherweight Division with all that she has achieved,” said Arlene. This was the first time in 8 years of Arlene being signed to Bellator that she had a support crew there for her. “It was amazing! To have them there to experience fight week and see everything behind the scenes and be cage side for my fight was the best. I’m also glad that they were able to be there straight after the fight so that they could see that I was ok” she smiled. Having her family and friends in Hawaii to support her meant that Arlene could spend some valuable time together with them post-fight. “I loved being able to take a few days after the fight to relax with them all before flying home. After being away for 5 weeks this time for camp, it really is nice to unwind together. Me being in camp affects the whole family. We make a lot of sacrifices as a family for me to be able to do what I do. So, it was extra special to have us all there to experience it and spend time as one afterwards” explained Arlene. “I was actually lucky enough to also have my mother-in-law, sister-in-law, my girlfriends and close friends come over from Australia too” she continued. Arlene is thankful for her support back home and has this message for her fans, “Don’t put limitations on yourself. Dream big. Life is short, so get out there and chase those things that make you happy. I’ve been breaking limits my whole career. Defying age. I am so glad I didn’t listen to people who said I couldn’t do it. Above all, be a good person with good intentions and if you live in Jordan Springs, don’t speed through the residential areas!” r Feature Article [Cover] Family portrait of Arlene with her son, daughter, and partner at Bellator photo shoot [Above] Weigh in photo and face off at Bellator | Images: Lucas Noonan

Doxology and soteriology: two technical terms that are important in religious reflection on the meaning of existence and, in particular, our own awareness of being alive in an often incomprehensible but awe- inspiring universe. Doxology entails worship and the giving of thanks and praise as we learn to grow in Christ, while soteriology entails the recognition of what Jesus, the Christ, achieved by his death and resurrection. The last two hundred or so years have seen the tremendous growth in understanding: anthropology has deepened knowledge of our origin, astronomy has expanded our comprehension of the universe in which we find ourselves, psychology has given a continued comprehension of our inner selves and so on. One certainty is that the more we learn, the greater the increase in questions to be answered. Another certainty is that in general people, whether individually or as a society, are continually struggling with reality. On the one side is the reality of sickness and death on the other is the continued bitter struggles between ideologies and nations. Audacious is the individual who claims to have the answers! There is however a question that has come down over the past 2,000 plus years, which provides a basis for contemplation, resolve and action: it is the question of a young Palestinian Jew who asked: “who do you think I am?” In giving an answer, it will quickly be realized that our understanding of the universe, of humanity will take on a new dimension. It will change the perception of a remote god somehow ‘out there’ to a living God who through doxology (worship and praise) becomes a driving force in everyday life. So, it is with soteriology which enables the experiences of life (whether pleasing or bitter) to recognize Jesus, the Christ, places our existence in time within the eternity of God. The Most Shocking Verse in the Bible?
The most famous verse in all the Bible may very well also be its most shocking. It consists of a mere 24 words in the English: “For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Perhaps it is because it is so familiar that, by and large, it no longer shocks us. It is shocking to think that not only does God love the world, but that in particular, He loves a world which by and large thinks so little of Him. Indeed, the very fact that God loves at all is startling in that it suggests a God who is not simply some impersonal force, but who instead is personal and who can and does relate to His creation. Secondly, it is shocking in the sense that God gives His very own Son in order to rescue us and bring us to Himself. Some have taken offence to this as though it were some kind of “divine child abuse” and as though it were somehow the equivalent to us killing our child. It’s not. At the heart of the Bible is this mystery that Christ was “God manifested in the flesh” and that in some sense it was God Himself who was put on the cross. That is shocking! But most shocking of all is that biblically, a right relationship with God is entered into not on the basis of how good we may think ourselves to be, but rather by trusting in Christ alone, and in what God Himself has now done for us through him

A Place to Call Home for Young People with Disabilities
MOSAIC Suitable and appropriate supported housing is one of the greatest areas of unmet need for people with disabilities in Australia. This has resulted in 3,899 young people (under 65) with disabilities stuck living in aged care. Thousands more are living in institutions or with ageing parents and desperate to live the young independent lives they deserve. Youngcare is a not-for-profit organisation that builds quality and age-appropriate homes for people living with physical disabilities. For the first time in the organisation’s history, it will be developing two state-of-the-art accessible homes for young people with physical disabilities in Jordan Springs. With more than 15,000 people accessing the NDIS in the Western NSW and Nepean Blue Mountains regions, assistance is needed more than ever within our community. Youngcare CEO Greg Johnson said, it’s vital that young people with disabilities feel at home within their communities and receive dignified care. “Thousands of people with disabilities are left isolated in places that don’t suit their care needs or stage of life. A third of these young people suffer with depression, that’s 3.5 times higher than the general population. The new homes in Jordan Springs will look like any other beautiful new home from the outside, but on the inside, they will be purpose built to ensure the residents live with independence and dignity”. The homes come fully equipped with the latest in-home automation technology to ensure the new residents are living with dignity and independence. Each resident will be well cared for with on-site supports available to them 24-hours a day. The homes are due for completion end of 2022. If you or someone you know is looking for specialist disability accommodation, call Youngcare Connect on 1800 844 727. To find out more about the not-for-profit, and to support the mission, visit youngcare.com.au.

Are Breast-Fed Infants Vitamin K Deficient And If So, Why? Vitamin K deficiency bleeding disorder (VKDB) is common in newborns, with dire consequences for severe cases: 1. intracranial haemorrhage (50%),; 2. persistent neurologic impairment 3. 20% mortality-rate Risk of newborn VKBD is increased for: 1. Babies of mothers using a. warfarin b. anti-seizure medications c. antibiotic rifampicin d. mothers who’ve undergone bariatric surgery 2. Babies suffering: a. diarrhoea, coeliac disease, cystic fibrosis, cholestatic liver-disease b. liver-disease decreasing vitamin K utilisation Since most mothers/newborns don’t suffer these issues, why’s VKDB so common? Although paediatricians recommend breast feeding, the cause of newborn VKDB is clearly inadequate maternal vitamin K intake, leading to deficiency during pregnancy/lactation. To illustrate, when vitamin K injections aren’t given at birth, VKBD prevalence is: 1. 5/105 new-borns (Western Europe) 2. 11/105 (Japan) 3. 72/105 (Thailand) A study by Greer (2001), for 6 months, followed 119 fully breast-

fed infants, who’d received 1mg vitamin K injections at birth, taking blood samples at 2, 4, 6, 8, 12, and 26 weeks. Researchers found that, despite receiving their vitamin K injection, babies had ‘persistently low vitamin K plasma concentrations’ in all samples from 4 weeks onward. Mothers’ vitamin K1 blood levels were also low, likely due to low intake. Researchers then measured PIVKA, a marker for vitamin K sufficiency, in cord blood of 156 full-term new-born infants, finding half of the babies had significantly low vitamin K levels. Finally, the mothers of these infants were found to be eating: 1. Just-equal-to or below the 60µg/day RDI for Vitamin K1, as it stood in 2005. 2. 33% below the 90µg/day RDI as currently recommended by Harvard university 3. 76% below the 250μg/day required to prevent osteoporosis according to the Framingham study The authors recommended higher intakes of vitamin K for pregnant and lactating mothers, suggesting lactating mothers supplement vitamin K1 at 5 mg/day to increase breast-milk levels to 80ng/mL, thus significantly increasing infant blood vitamin-K. The intake of vitamin-K required for optimal function of all vitamin-K-dependent proteins is still unknown. Given the high prevalence of newborn-VKDB, it seems highly likely most mothers aren’t eating the foods to meet babies’ vitamin-K requirements. If you’d like to learn how to eat better for pregnancy, why not call us at the clinic.

What is Leptospirosis? It can affect Dogs, Cats and Humans Leptospirosis is a disease caused by infection with a kind of bacteria called Leptospira. Leptospirosis can cause kidney failure and liver failure, and occasionally severe lung disease and bleeding disorders. The clinical signs of Leptospira infection vary considerably from no signs of infection, to just a mild illness of short duration from which the animal recovers quickly on their own, to severe disease and even death. With regard to companion animals, dogs are most susceptible to developing leptospirosis but generally infection is rare. Cats and other animals can also be affected, including humans. Outbreaks in some piggeries and cattle herds, particularly dairy, may occur in unvaccinated animals. Small mammals such as rodents are often carriers and shed the bacteria in their urine. Your pet can become infected and potentially develop leptospirosis if: • Their mucous membranes (i.e. lips, tongue, gums, inside of the eyelids) or any broken skin (i.e. a wound) comes into contact with infected urine or something that is contaminated by infected urine (for example, soil, water, food). • They eat tissue from an animal or carcass that is infected. • They are bitten by an animal that is infected. • Rarely, through breeding or if a pregnant female passes the infection through the placenta to her puppies. • Signs of leptospirosis may include: • Fever • Lethargy • Sore muscles and a reluctance to move
• • • • • • •
Shivering Increased drinking Increased or decreased frequency or amount of urination Dehydration Vomiting Diarrhoea Jaundice (where the skin and mucous membranes become yellow in colour) • Eye inflammation • Difficulty breathing • Bleeding (including blood in vomit or faeces, saliva, bleeding from the nose and small red spots on mucous membranes or pale skin from bleeding) • Fluid accumulation causing swollen legs, distended abdomen or restricted ability to breathe If you have any concerns about your pet, please contact your vet as soon as possible. Leptospirosis can be treated, usually with antibiotics and supportive care. The chance of recovery depends on how severely the dog is affected, and how quickly they receive veterinary treatment. What Can Be Done To Prevent Leptospirosis? There are vaccines available in dogs that can effectively prevent leptospirosis. You can also reduce your dog’s risk of infection by minimising your dog’s potential exposure to Leptospira bacteria. Avoid your dog drinking from or swimming in waterways that pose a potential risk and minimise their contact with potentially infected animals such as farm animals and rodents, including making sure that they do not eat carcasses.
