Josh’s Burning Love for Bernice Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade’s base recently played host to a marriage proposal with a difference, with volunteer firefighter Josh Gow getting down on bended knee and popping the question to fiancé Bernice Agius. Josh’s amazing proposal to Bernice involved the message “WILL YOU MARRY ME BERNICE?” being displayed brightly on the brigade’s public notice board, with the fire trucks decorated in fairy lights and a trail of rose petals in the shape on a love heart on the ground. “There was a lot of running around from my friends who helped organise the proposal. It took about 45 minutes of organising to pull it all together. I’m very thankful for all their help to make it happen. By the end of it all, I was nervous but confident that Bernice would say yes” said romantic Josh. “I chose the Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade base Josh on bended knee proposing to Bernice | Image: www.facebook.com/Llandilofirebrigade

Exciting Times for Springs Netball Club
the
Jordan
The Jordan Springs community is pleased to have had the opportunity to form a brand-new netball club. The Jordan Springs Netball Club was created in conjunction with Penrith District Netball Association. The Jordan Springs Netball Club committee comprises of six local members who have volunteered their services and time to help establish and promote the club. The Executive Committee comprises of Michelle Barnes (President), Alicia McWhirter (Vice President), Sally Lee (Treasurer), Tamara Cooper (Secretary), Shannon Hunt (Registrar) and Rebecca Weston (Umpires Convenor). They have worked aimlessly to ensure the club participates in its first netball season in 2017. Jordan Springs Netball Club has been lucky to have Mooney Financial Services as its major sponsor. Other sponsors include St Marys Indoor Sports and Recreation. These sponsors have played an integral part in ensuring adequate equipment and resources are available to start their first season. The club has already held two registration days, and have had an overwhelming response, with approximately 11 teams being formed. The club is still open to taking registrations, so if you are interested in being a part of this new and exciting sporting club, please send your enquiries to jsnetball@gmail. com or alternatively via their Facebook page.

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
The Christian year is divided into ‘seasons’ which sets out aspects of the life and work of Jesus the Christ and from teachings [doctrines] that have emanated from reflections on his life and work. So December [which commences the Christian year] sets out the two teachings relating to the coming birth of Jesus and of his return at the end of time as we know it. His life and work is entailed in the concept of eternity: that is with time being absorbed in eternity. There is a magnificent photo of deep space taken by the Hubble Telescope which clearly indicates to astronomers that to date only a minute area of space has been explored. Some have given to this photo the title: “a glimpse of infinity.” Here lies the amazing challenge to scholars of all sciences and disciplines to explain and to search for meaning and understanding. January is known as the season of the Epiphany: within the created order in time, Emmanuel [God with us] born at Christmas is recognized as God’s purpose for its salvation [to make whole. Soon the year places emphasis on the ministry and execution of Jesus the Christ. It is known as the season of Lent. The three Sundays preceding Lent have beautiful collects [that which summaries or ‘collects’ the teaching for the day]. They emerged in the late sixth century after the invasion of Italy by the Lombards. It was not only time of war but of famine and horrific earthquakes that happened at the time [mid- century 568CE]. The collects express the anguish and hope that was found among Christians at the time. Lent itself is determined by the phases of

the paschal moon and has its origin around the second century following the Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus. The traditional six weeks of Lent came to be observed being based on the Scripture record of the forty day fast held by Jesus before he commenced his ministry. In entering into observing the season of Lent, in particular intensifying meditation and prayer, a deeper awareness is made of time and its role in eternity and as such Humanity searching to understand the universe it finds itself in, is called upon to embrace the reality of Emmanuel [God with us] as achieved in the life and death of Jesus the Christ the incarnate Son of God. Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com One of the best lessons that I teach at school, is the difference between Aggressive, Assertive, and Passive. This is such a good lesson for children to learn. People who adopt a particular style of relating in childhood tend to take that style into adulthood. They are often not aware of their responses and this can cause difficulties in their relationships. Aggressive is like being a Cranky Crocodile. Cranky Crocodiles are snappy and mean. They only think of themselves. They push other people around. They fly off the handle. Other kids don’t want to play with them. Passive is like being a timid Mouse. A timid Mouse is withdrawn. He does not stand up for himself, and lets others push him around. He then gets resentful and angry, but turns it in on himself. Assertive children stand up for themselves in a kind way. They balance their own needs with the needs of others, and try to find a happy medium. They use their calming down strategies and their problem solving skills. For Assertive, I ask children to conjure up their own image; something that they think is Cool, Calm, and Confident. Assertive kids also use “I Messages” to let other people know how they feel and what they would like. At school, we use a stem statement to help the students remember how to do “I Messages” … “When you __________, I feel __________. Would you please __________?” We also teach the children that just because they use their I Messages, it doesn’t mean the other person will do as they ask. It’s just a better way of communicating. In case you are wondering – yes, even young children do this very well (often better than the older children). Our kindergarten children were using it within a few weeks of learning it with the teacher reinforcing it wherever she could. If you want a poster for the fridge for this skill, jump on to the Hands, Hearts, and Minds blog https://handsheartsminds. wordpress.com/ Come back next month for another fabulous skill to teach your kids. Josh’s Burning Love for Bernice
as the marriage proposal location as I have been a part of the RFS for about 4 years and it’s my second home. They are like family to us and there was some significance for me to do it there” he also explained. Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade, Captain Perce Denton supported the proposal and was very happy for the young couple, “Josh requested support to arrange his proposal to Bernice at our station with very short notice, so his “mates” arranged the scene for his proposal. We congratulate Josh and welcome Bernice to the brigade’s extended family. To be a volunteer takes a special kind of person to commit to the cause of their choice, and share their time with us (Rural Fire Service) and their family. That role is always easier when you have the support of your family”. Josh and Bernice already have a young daughter, Alyrah who is 8 months old. They have yet to set a date for the wedding, but we bet it will be just as special as the proposal.

Shamrocks, Leprechauns and the Colour Green Thinking about St Patricks Day, I think funny hats, strange looking leprechauns, lots of Guinness beer and the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow, but really, it’s much more than that. Over the years Australia’s celebration of this fun day has become bigger and louder with more people opting for the colour green on March 17 every year. The wearing of the green was a sign of rebellion in Ireland in 1798. Green was the colour of the republican revolutionary movement and you were punished by hanging for wearing it. Today it’s a celebration of all things Irish when worn on St Patrick’s Day. Many celebrations are held all over Sydney, from the modest family event with parades to the adult’s only fun at many Irish pubs and hotels. Here are a few fun facts about St Patrick’s Day 1. The Irish can’t claim credit for the invention of the Saint Patrick’s Day Parade, the first recorded Saint Patrick’s Day Parade took place in Boston on March 18, 1737. Ireland had their first St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Dublin in 1931. 2. It is believed St. Patrick, a Roman-Britain-born Christian missionary, was born in the late fourth century and is credited with bringing Christianity to the Irish people and the day is the traditional death date of Saint Patrick patron Saint of Ireland. 3. One of the Irish traditions is to pinch anyone who is not wearing green on St. Patrick’s Day. 4. The leprechaun is a small Irish fairy 5. The humble shamrock was originally a teaching tool. St. Patrick is said to have used the three-leaved plant to explain the Holy Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit). 6. In 2010, the Sydney Opera House went green to mark the 200th anniversary of St. Patrick’s Day there. In Sydney, St Patrick’s Day was first marked in 1810, when Lachlan Macquarie, the Governor of New South Wales, provided entertainment for Irish convict workers. If you’re planning on getting your green on this March be sure to say “Happy Saint Patrick’s Day” in Irish to your fellow leprechauns. Lá fhéile Pádraig sona duit (Law aye-la Par-ick sun-a dit)

Kindy Smiles at St Joseph’s their oral language skills in order to give them a strong literacy and numeracy foundation which will support them throughout the years ahead”. The teachers have the classrooms operating in discovery pods, where the children can explore, problem solve and work corroboratively with the support and guidance of their teachers. “They particularly enjoyed the cooking corner. We had plenty of ‘Masterchefs’ serving their friends lots of very imaginative dishes,” observed Kinder teacher, Bernie Purtell. As a special reminder of their first day at St Joseph’s, each child received a picture book to take home with them to read with their parents. One of the children was overhead telling his mum, “I had a fantastic day. I want to come back again!”
There were lots of happy smiles when the Kindy’s started their first day of school at St Joseph’s Primary School in Kingswood. Children were brought to school by mums, dads, brothers, sisters, aunties, uncles, grandparents, friends and neighbours. There was a great sense of community as they all shared in this very important milestone in their special little person’s life. After final hugs and kisses goodbye, the children settled into their first day of school. The classrooms were full of excited 4 and 5-year old’s ready for learning. Terrie Berg, Kindergarten teacher said, “The children are bubbling to learn new things. They want to make friends, read and write and count. Our focus this term is on developing Kindergarten children enjoying their first day| Image Supplied

The Schools Matter promotion includes a cash prize pool of $15,000: • 1st prize – $10,000 • 2nd prize – $3,000 • 3rd prize – $2000 Entering is easy and the process is simple. You can nominate your Penrith LGA school via the Mooney Real Estate online form http://www.mooneyre.com.au. Once nominations are in, voting will commence. The nomination period commenced on the 1st February and ends 31st March. Voting begins 1st April – and ends on the 30th June. Prizes will be announced 1st of July. Peggy Willcox, founder of Mooney Real Estate said, “This is a great opportunity for our community to get involved supporting local education. Winning schools will be able to put their cash prize towards things like; sporting goods, sporting trips, educational tools and much more. We are so excited to see all the nominations come through and then finally announce winners on the 1st July.” “Our team are really proud of this campaign and believe it will also have a positive impact on Mooney Real Estate brand awareness. Part of our company culture is that we are truly family run and owned. We want people to know this. We are approachable, supportive and not your average ‘Real Estate agents’. We take a very different approach to Real Estate and this campaign will help our core messages resonate with the community.” Peggy adds, “We have a personalised approach to your property needs. I will mow lawns, wash dishes, spend the weekend with my clients filling skip bins - whatever is needed to get a great result and see our clients walk away happy, we do it!” The most important outcome we are trying to achieve from the Schools Matter campaign is bringing the community together for some healthy competition. It’s all about backing your school to help them win some cash to enhance learning.

Teamwork Makes The Dream Work At You Can Dance!! You Can Dance at Emu Plains, a leading Dance, Performing Arts and All Star Cheerleading School recently won a very prestigious award reflecting their ‘team’ philosophy to a tee! The AASCF 2016 Best Sportsmanship Program was awarded to You Can Dance by the Australian All Star Cheerleading Federation. The AASCF currently has close to 1000 clubs registered and chose local school You Can Dance as the overall winner at their annual coach’s conference in Homebush. “This award means so much to us as a school. It credits our whole team of staff, students and parents. Our mission at YCD is to foster an environment in our school where everyone works together as a ‘team’. To receive such recognition Australia wide, among so many elite and outstanding programs, for having the Best Sportsmanship is just incredible, very humbling and tells us we are absolutely on the right track with what we are teaching our children” said Jane Houlihan, Director. You Can Dance have been in operation in Emu Plains for 13 years and are setting the standard in exceptional training in all things Dance and Cheer. They have won an incredible number of National Championship titles and International bids in both Cheer and Dance and their school is filled to the brim with winning banners and hundreds upon hundreds of trophies! However, their classes go well beyond the trophies and the choreography, their number one priority is fostering a positive and happy family environment where their students can thrive as people and be part of a great team, where they are accepted and supported. Their focus is 100% on the journey and to produce respectful young people as well as developing their talents and celebrating their achievements. Their ‘team’ philosophy and top notch tuition sees them continue to grow in number and strength, but it’s the extra care and whole school attitude that truly sets them apart. “We are infinitely excited about the year ahead with new programs, better facilities and a huge timetable of classes for absolutely all ages. Winning such a prestigious award is a wonderful start to 2017!” explained Jane Houlihan. Teamwork Makes Dreams Work! | Image Supplied

Grieving Fur Babies This article is difficult to write. Both our cat and dog have died within weeks of each other. They were such good mates and I’m sure my dog died from a broken heart. Our cat, Pepper was 21 years old and amazed our vet by her youth and agility. Our dog, Remy was 10 years old but was given an upsetting prognosis from the vet over a year ago. It was a shock to all of us that at his 2016 yearly check up that he was filled with cancer in most organs and a bad heart murmur that wasn’t present previously but was life threatening now. We went home being told that he might last a few days or a week. The time went by and he was still running around with Pepper and I mean running. They had routines that they did together (which I miss terribly) but they were both vibrant and happy. Remy slept a little longer and deeper than usual but he was still energetic while awake. The Days I Was Hoping Would Never Come Pepper died January 13th and Remy on February 2nd. My grief is overwhelming right now. It’s difficult to get through each day without them. Living With Grief Friends who haven’t had pets might not understand, “It’s only an animal, what’s the problem?” Pets do so much for us; they give us unconditional love, companionship, respect, routines and much more. The death of a pet leaves a void in your heart and life. The death of a pet can often hurt as much as losing a friend or loved one. It’s intense. Research has shown that the death of a pet
is comparable to the death of a human except we don’t have the same rituals for pets as we do for humans. Tips • Give yourself permission to: • Remember them. • Cry and feel your emotions. • Leave their bowls out. You don’t have to clear their things out. • Get another pet when you want to. It won’t replace your loved pet, you can love another pet and still remember your previous pet. Cait offers grief, loss and bereavement counselling for adults, adolescents, children and families in the Penrith CBD.

And there it is, March! Almost a quarter of the year gone, just like that! This month we bring you plenty of news and happenings in and across our community. We also share a beautiful story of romance in our cover story, love is most definitely ‘all around us’! I lose count of how many times I get told that readers can't wait for their copy of the Gazette. It is very humbling to know, that our readers find so much joy amongst these pages. Their reasons differ; some like to have details of local businesses at their fingertips; others love the localised stories; and I must admit.... MANY simply cannot wait for this month's recipe! I am told, as soon as it arrives, the recipe is swiftly removed from the paper and placed on the fridge! This month's recipe is sure to please! I won't spoil it for you, have a sneaky peek at page 13 for all the juicy details! "Don't let the silly little things steal all your happiness" For now, sit back with a cuppa in hand and enjoy (if for only a brief moment) your Community News.
Advertising Policy... Payment on booking secures your space. The Business Directory offers cost effective advertising to businesses in an alphabetical format. Premium Placement may be available, at an extra charge. An editorial focus on a local business may be included if space permits, at the Editor’s discretion. Community News... The Jordan Springs Gazette welcomes community news and events, local achievements, births, deaths, obituaries, weddings, engagements and anniversaries (published free of charge) Articles of interest will be accepted at the Editor’s discretion. Articles do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Editor. Letters to the Editor... May be printed and edited as necessary. Names must be submitted but can be withheld from publication at the writer’s request. Every effort is made to print correct information but no responsibility can be taken for errors or omissions.
