Nominations Open For Local Celebration Awards Nominations are now open for the 2022 Local Celebration Awards – the award program that recognises people of all ages who go above and beyond, volunteer their time to make Penrith a great place to live, or work tirelessly for the benefit of others and the community. Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said that after several difficult years which have presented unprecedented challenges, there’s never been a better time to shine a light on the dedicated, selfless and inspirational people who are making a difference in Penrith. “In 2021, we were overwhelmed by the outstanding calibre of entries for the inaugural Local Celebration Awards – so much so that the judges awarded multiple winners for several of the categories,” Cr Hitchen said. “As a result, we had seven winners rather than four and I congratulate them heartily: Kristine Gauci, Daena Madon, Cathy and Marzi DeSanti, Gloria Lenon, Robert Rayner, Michael Allen, and Veronica Nou,” she said. “I encourage residents and our wider community to put forward a nomination for the 2022 Local Celebration Awards – this is your chance to shine a light on the heroes who make us all proud to be part of this city.” Nominations for the 2022 Local Celebration Awards are open until 29 April 2022, and submissions will be accepted over the counter, online, by mail and by video. There are four award categories to choose from: • Citizen of the Year (over 18yrs old) • Young Citizen of the Year (aged under 17yrs old) • Mayor’s Local Heroes Award (all ages) • Making a Difference – Community Service Award (all ages) The award recipients will be announced at Council’s Ordinary Meeting in July 2022. Following the announcement in July, the Local Celebration Award winners will be formally recognised at a Civic Reception event held in August 2022. Find out more about the award program, the selection criteria, and how to nominate at: penrith.city/localcelebration-awards

and understanding and apologise for any delays as the team works to clear the backlog created by the pandemic.” Minister for Metropolitan Roads Natalie Ward said the NSW Government had listened to the community through this difficult time. “Customers who believe they have a case for genuine hardship can discuss their circumstances with the teams at their local Service NSW Centre,” Mrs Ward said. “The safety of staff and customers remains our top priority. Driver testers are required to be fully vaccinated and customers either need to be fully vaccinated or have received a negative Rapid Antigen Test on the day of the test. “Face masks, disposable seat covers, hand sanitisers and other personal protective equipment will remain in place.” The new St Marys driver testing hub is due to open mid-year at 75-105 Mamre Road and operate from 8.30am-4.30pm Monday to Friday. v Article: Minister Dominello + Minister Ward | Image : www.pixabay.com
2022 Seniors Card Directory & 2022 Diary For Older People Available Now The NSW Government is working to ensure more customers get their keys to the road sooner with Service NSW building a new dedicated driver testing hub in Sydney’s west. Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said the $3.47 million investment would not only create a state-of-the-art driver testing facility in St Marys but would also create jobs. “Driver testing has been affected by COVID-19 restrictions and the Omicron variant but we are doing everything we can to get back to business as usual,” Mr Dominello said. “Alongside the recruitment of 147 staff, including extra driver testers, and extending driver testing hours at selected locations across the state, this new purpose-built hub will help ensure we’re back on track. “The new hub will offer about 600 computer-based knowledge tests and more than 480 driving tests each week for customers, including those wanting to graduate to their P-Plates. “Service NSW will also roll out a new Mobile Service Centre, which will operate in temporary locations across metropolitan Sydney as an extra addition to assist with the backlog of driving and driver knowledge testing. “We appreciate customers’ patience

Girl Guides Making a Difference The local community has its very own Girl Guides group, right here in Ropes Crossing. Ropes Crossing District Girl Guides is made up of Junior Guides and Guides and they meet at Ropes Crossing Community Hub on Tuesday nights from 6pm, during school terms. Their Junior Guides have 15 girls and 3 leaders, whilst their Guides have 7 girls and 2 leaders. Junior Guides are aged 7 to 9 and Guides are aged 10 to 13. “Guiding offers girls a place to try new things, learn different skills, have adventures and make lifelong friends. Guides is focused on being ‘girl lead’ and the girls decide what activities they would like to do or what skills they would like to learn or improve” said Hayley Boyd of Ropes Crossing District Girl Guides. “A Typical meeting might involve cooking, crafts, working on community service projects, badgework or planning an upcoming camp” she continued. Each of the leaders enjoy being a part of Girl Guides. “I enjoy everything about Guiding, from providing the space for the girls and watching them grow into confident, happy young ladies to the amazing women I get to meet and work with every week” said Hayley/Bluejay (Junior Guides). “I love being able to support and provide guidance to a fantastic group of girls and see them discover their potential and build lifelong friendships” said Fiona/Cockatoo (Junior Guides). “The friendships and the life skills that Guides provides along with the fun experiences and places I have visited because of Guides is what I enjoy” said Tiffany/Marlin (Junior Guides). “I enjoy providing a space for the girls to come every week where they can be themselves” said Keanna/Platypus (Guides). “I like hearing about what the girls are interested in and their views on the world” said Caitlin/Bandicoot (Guides). Any girls aged 7 to 13 are welcome to come and try Guides. This also includes adults who would like to volunteer. r Junior Guides french knitting | Image Supplied by Ropes Crossing District Girl Guides

From Receptionist to Physiotherapist - A Local Woman’s Journey For a young local woman, taking a job in a physio practice as a casual receptionist after school, grew into a passion to join the physiotherapy profession. When Sarah Morley, a Penrith local, took a part time receptionist job at The Healthy Body Company in Penrith, she was just starting an Exercise Science Degree and had no real plans of where that might take her. “I had just finished school and wasn’t sure where I was headed. I enrolled in an Exercise Science Degree at Western Sydney University. “Spending time with the physios and watching the difference they made in the lives of their patients had a big impact on me. I made the decision to pursue a Masters of Physiotherapy at the University of Sydney”. There are several pathways into the physiotherapy profession. Some high school students progress straight to a degree in physiotherapy. Others may start a different degree and then transfer. The third group, like Sarah, complete a Masters of Physiotherapy and commence their physiotherapy career with undergraduate and graduate qualifications. “I am very excited to be starting my career at The Healthy Body Company in Jordan Springs. Having spent 6 years at Uni, I feel that I can bring maturity and life experience to my role. I am also thrilled to be joining the Graduate Program offered by The Healthy Body Company”. Physiotherapists work in the public and private sector and in a broad range of settings, from paediatric to aged care, sports, and women’s health. By participating in the graduate program at The Healthy Body Company, Sarah will have access to an experienced mentor, peer to peer learning, and a team where the patient always comes first. Jude Holroyd, the Principal Physiotherapist at The Healthy Body Company, Jordan Springs said, “Sarah is the latest in a proud tradition of young people from Western Sydney who have joined our Graduate Program. She is tenacious and warm, and I am very confident that with the support of our team she will have the opportunity launch a stellar physiotherapy career”. v [Top] Sarah Morley [Left] Sarah with Kaelin Moodley, physiotherapist | Images: The Healthy Body Company

How To Help Your Child Solve Problems Growing up is about learning foundational skills for life and few skills are more important than problem solving. It may be tempting to “jump in” and solve problems for children, but whenever possible it’s fantastic to involve children in solving their own problems. It takes five steps to solve a problem: 1. Identify the problem 2. Think of possible solutions 3. Consider the costs and benefits of potential solutions 4. Implement your plan 5. Evaluate to see if the problem has been resolved When children are little, you can help by giving them the words to identify the problem, e.g. “You want to finish the puzzle, but there’s a piece missing”. Instead of directing children to try your solution, prompt children to think of their own possible solutions with a question like, “what could we do about this?” Younger children may need help to think of possible solutions. You can begin by offering two ideas. “Perhaps we could look for the piece or try a different puzzle?” This is an effective ageappropriate way to give younger children choice in how they respond a problem. When children are older, we can support more open-ended brain storming. Children may want to immediately try the first solution that comes to mind. We can prompt children to think ahead and consider consequences with a simple question like, “I wonder what would happen if we tried that?” Maintain curiosity and resist judgment. Remember that the point of such a question is to support children to stop and think before acting. If a child’s solution doesn’t work out, we can support resilience. It is natural to feel frustrated or disappointed when we don’t succeed at something, but problem solving is all about trying again. It may be helpful to offer to work together to figure out what went wrong. When children succeed in solving their own problems, they feel more confident and in control of their lives. These positive experiences support greater wellbeing and relationships across the lifespan.

Jordan Springs Mums 2.0
Jordan Springs Mums 2.0 is a Facebook group that was created by three Mums in 2016. The popular group now boasts over 1,000 members. “A group of us had a common interest that didn’t fit into your normal “mother’s group”. So, we created a page that allowed all Mums to feel welcomed” said Shareema Allen and Liz Nguyen of Jordan Springs Mums 2.0 to
the Jordan Springs Gazette. It has created an opportunity for the community to get behind and encourage one another. There have been lots of topics over the years from simple things like where you can find the best hairdresser to support for each other in hard times. “We think it’s important to have groups like this in the local community. Being a parent can be lonely at times and knowing that other families are going through the same stuff and are able to support each other makes life a little easier” Shareema and Liz explained. There are many positive stories that have come from within the group. Both Shareema and Liz enjoy being a part of it. “We value the friendships we have gained from it” they ended. Local Mums can get involved with the group by searching ‘Jordan Springs Mums 2.0’ on Facebook. Local friends Sean Skeels and Marley Whatarau are taking social media by storm, thanks to their hugely popular ‘Get Down with Sean and Marley’ videos. The pair have amassed an amazing 1.9 million followers on TikTok, including over 25 million likes. They have 125,000 followers on Instagram and their YouTube channel also has nearly 29,000 subscribers. What makes their feat even more amazing is that they have been making videos together for less than two years. “The first video they did was a music video, which was released about 18 months ago” said Tammy Horton, Marley’s Mum. “Initially, they started by having music lessons. This led them to writing a song, then making a music video which was originally going to be just for the family to view” she added. Sean and Marley met each other in primary school. They were then in a bowling league together, where their special bond and friendship blossomed. Their videos have been admired by people all around the world. With a fanbase of young and old followers, it’s clear to see why many can’t get enough of their antics in front of the camera. “They make all sorts of videos. This includes cooking, music, and their special bond. “Marley and Sean enjoy spending time together and they always have so much fun. They also love to entertain” smiled Tammy. Such is their popularity, that they have recently taken to Cameo, where fans can now request a personal greeting or message by the duo via video. “The boys have some big things on the horizon. They are really looking forward to doing some charity work, to inspire people to do their best” she ended. r Feature Article: [Cover L-R] Sean and Marley on set | Image: Tim Hans [Above] Good friends | Image: Glenda Skeels

There are 13 types of brownies to choose from, including favourites like Rocky Road, Banoffee and Choc Honeycomb to name a few. “The business began in October/November last year. The MRI or CT of your back shows Aortic Calcification – What Does This Mean? On these reports, radiologists frequently report “calcification of the abdominal aorta” as an incidental finding, especially in people over 50. The patient is often unaware that this finding has been made nor of its importance. It means patient’s major arteries are losing their normal elasticity, turning into bone. Research shows that calcification of arterial walls truly ‘resembles bone formation’, with the same cells, proteins, cell-cell communication molecules used in bones. Studies demonstrate the presence bone forming cells and bone resorbing cells in vessel walls, new bone matrix proteins in the arterial wall, allowing crystallisation of calcium. In severe cases, fully formed bone is seen. Such ‘cardiovascular calcification’ is a systemic disease, and is: 1. A marker of generalized vascular disease 2. Significantly associated with raised blood pressure (systolic) and (pulse) 3. A likely contributor to calcium loss from bone 4. An independent predictor of cardiovascular events such as: a. heart attack, stroke, b. bypass surgery, c. balloon angioplasty, d. stent placement, e. and all-cause mortality
in both cardiovascular and renal patients. A ‘Coronary Calcium Scan’ measures calcification of heart arteries. People with a calcium score over 400 are almost 15 times more likely to have cardiovascular disease than people with uncalcified arteries. A 2004 double-blind placebo-controlled study looked at 181 postmenopausal women divided into three groups, who were given daily for three years either: 1. a placebo 2. minerals plus Vit D (500 mg calcium, 10 mg zinc, 150 mg magnesium 8 μg vitamin D3) 3. minerals plus Vit D, plus 1000 µg vitamin K1 After three years, the placebo and minerals plus vitamin D groups had worse arterial stiffness and higher pulse pressure. However, arteries of group receiving vitamin-K remained flexible (uncalcified), their pulse pressure normal. Vitamin K is found in some greens and fermented foods and is very important for maintaining cardiovascular as well as bone and dental health. Yet most patients attending the clinic have never heard of vitamin K, nor which foods are good sources. Most will not be getting enough. If you’d like to know more about how diet can help keep bones, teeth, and blood vessels healthy, feel free to call us at the clinic.
FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
The Jew appeals to the Torah, encapsulated in what is known as the Old Testament. The Buddhist and Hindus to the Vedas, the Muslim to the Koran, the Atheist to philosophical constructions, while the Christian appeals to Christ as recorded in what is known as the New Testament. To anyone, this vast arena of appeal is to all intents and purposes an exhaustive study in which no one can claim to have total mastery! Yet, the religious dimension and influence in life cannot be ignored. In no matter what religious environment the factors of intolerance and ignorance can be used to hurt, particularly when used in the field of politics. Individually, religious sentiment is regulated to the environment in which the person is born and grows. Conversion as such is a rare occurrence across religions except in circumstances where political agendas play a part. History gives many examples of this. Essentially the history of religions centres on the perennial search to give some understanding to existence. Even the Atheist in defending Atheism is in fact searching for an answer that does not include the concept of Theism, to gain understanding for existence. It can be argued perhaps, that in general most individuals caught up in the business of living rarely give time to consider the question and to all intent and purpose are content to live in the environment in which they find themselves. In the long evolution of humans and the universe when taking in the vast array of scriptural appeal from various religious systems (including Atheism), one important factor can be considered along the axis of evolution: Jesus who is called the Christ. He offers the ability to unify the individual and society in a personal relationship allowing true meaning to existence. In church worship this ability is given impetus.

The Power of Connecting Are you looking to join a local exercise group? Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk is a walking group for women, established in December 2020. The inspiring ladies meet outside of Nepean Coffee Club at Tench Reserve every Wednesday night at 5pm (March to October) for a coffee and a chat, before they head off together on the 6.5km Great River Walk at 6pm. From November to February, the walk begins at 7pm. With the recent lockdowns leaving the group to cancel some weeks, they are back and welcome any women wishing to join their group. “We meet an hour before the walk commences for coffee or tea. This is an opportunity to welcome new walkers, and for existing walkers to get to know each other. Five to ten minutes before the walk, we have a quick catch-up, then we start. Some women walk part of the way and turn around, whilst others proceed to finish the entire distance. All women are very supportive of each other’s physical ability, speed and endurance” explained Angela Lambros of Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk. The group was started by locals Angela Lambros and Jesseka Flakelar. They were motivated to start the group after the success of Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk and the positive impact it has on the community. “As Jesseka and I work in the mental health industry, we are passionate about starting conversations around mental health and normalising these experiences. Connections you make through relationships, places, and social activities can build a safety net for your physical and mental health. Healthy connections are known to lower levels of anxiety and depression and raise self-esteem,” said Angela. Angela and Jesseka believe the key to the group’s success is when members connect with one another. “We enjoy seeing women connect. During this time of isolation and hardship, it is something we believe all of us need! We couldn't be happier to see women coming together”. The community can also help the group by financially providing coffee sponsorship for the group’s walkers. “I volunteer my personal time to host this group. The donated money is paid directly to The Coffee Club Nepean River, and we will promote your business on our Facebook post as a thank you” Angela ended. If you are interested in supporting the group, you can send a message via the Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk Facebook page or email penrithwomenwalkandtalk@hotmail.com. r The group meeting before a walk last year | Image: Riannon Noakes

Adopt a Friend for Life! Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 4 lovely kittens ready for adoption now! The kittens are 17 weeks old. There are 3 females and 1 male. They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment.
