New Park’nPay Accessibility Portal Goes Live

The NSW Government has already integrated 383 accessible parking spots across four Sydney councils. When completed, the program will cover roughly 3600 accessible parking spots across 30 Sydney Metro councils.

Mr Dominello said users would be able to select a spot with the recognisable wheelchair icon to indicate it is an accessibility bay with the spot being green if it is available to use or red if occupied.

“This is a great example of using technology to be more inclusive and this enhancement will make it easier than ever to plan a journey and find a parking spot,” Mr Dominello said.

“Instead of spending time and wasting petrol driving around looking for an accessible park, we have an innovative solution which gets drivers where they need to go.

“The Park’nPay app will also have an accessibility mode option where customers with a mobile parking permit can customise their experience to search for accessible parking, start a parking session and receive notifications.”

Vice President of Google Cloud – Australia and New Zealand Alister Dias said the NSW Government and Google share a vision for a strong and inclusive digital future for all Australians, and technology can play a pivotal role in helping deliver improved outcomes.

It is now easier for motorists with disabilities to find accessible parking across Sydney streets and carparks, thanks to a new nation-leading Park’nPay Accessibility Portal, giving drivers the power to search for hundreds of accessible spots with the tap of a button.

Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government Victor Dominello said the Accessibility Portal is an easy-to-use webbased platform, allowing people to search for accessible parking at their desired location, and filter for the time and day the space is needed as well as by parking type.

“We are continuing our journey to improve the accessibility of services for the more than 400,000 people with mobility parking permits and want to offer them an easy way to find parking before they leave their driveways,” Mr Dominello said.

“It can often be time-consuming for drivers with a disability to find a suitable parking space especially if they are unfamiliar with the area they are travelling to.

“Motorists will be able to use the Accessibility Portal to find a spot which best suits their needs, the number of accessible spaces at a location, get directions and real-time availability for accessible spaces.”

"Working closely with the Department of Customer Service and Physical Disability Council, Google Cloud is optimising the Park'nPay experience by analysing parking sensor data to provide real time parking and travel information, ensuring motorists with disabilities can better plan trips and park with ease,” Mr Dias said.

Physical Disability Council NSW CEO Serena Ovens said: “The Accessibility Portal further enhances our member’s capacity to source accessible parking information easily including the ability to check the streetscape they will be parking in.”

“Any information that assists people with mobility needs to better understand their parking options is welcomed. PDCN applaud Google’s involvement in the Park’nPay app as an important innovation that supports the inclusion of the disability community.”

Real-time parking data will come online in the app as each council area is onboarded and will be completed in 2023.

The Portal is a joint initiative between the NSW Government, Google and the Physical Disability Council of NSW.

The Probus organisation has a club in your local area providing an exciting opportunity to meet with fellow retirees and join in stimulating activities. The club was formed in March 2018, to service Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs and joins the fray with over 1,700 clubs with more than 125,000 members all over Australia and New Zealand.

Christmas eve saw the passing of our inaugural President and foundation member Brian Embury. Photo below Brian had been extremely unwell for the past 3 1/2 years and he lost his battle with pancreatic cancer. He will be missed by all our members. Thoughts and prayers to his wife and family.

On February 2nd, some of our members went to the seniors’ concert in the city. Later in February and closer to home, we tried our bowling skills at barefoot bowls, followed by lunch at Kingswood. Our meeting saw Peter Plowman give another of his fascinating talks. In May, we will be hosting our Biggest Morning Tea again for the Cancer Council and to honour Brian’s memory and all others who have been affected in one way or another with cancer.

Later in the year, we are spreading our wings and flying to Tasmania as a group for 10 days of fun and sightseeing travelling around in a local coach.

Apart from attending monthly meetings and getting to know fellow members with a cuppa and biscuit, you will have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of pursuits, travel locally or around the world, enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme, have access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance plans, develop new interests and stay active.

The club currently has a regular lunch at a local venue on the second Tuesday of each month, a monthly outing, and special events. An example of the outings planned for this year are the Postman’s Run on the Hawkesbury River, movie group, car, bus and train trips, outings to the new Sydney Zoo, lunch on the Hawkesbury Paddle Steamer and many more events. We are always adding new and varied outings.

The Probus Club of Jordan Springs welcomes visitors and new members and meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month from 10:00am. FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO

Biblical studies often lead to a better understanding of the various authors of the biblical texts. Take for example, the use of the word ‘mansion’. “Many mansions’ is considered a poor translation from the original Greek. A better interpretation is ‘caravanserai’, which gives concept of the future as one of process in stages of exploring and experiencing the reality of God. As such, caravanserai provides a deeper understanding of life and death.

An important note is that in the New Testament writings, a greater emphasis is given to life after death not based on a relationship with Jesus the Christ. This concept is recent in Christian teaching stemming from the rise in the concept of individualism. This concept breaks down the recognition of humanity as a corporate whole: the family of humans.

Hence, it is important that the individual is caught up in the human ‘whole’ from family to social functioning that finds its purpose and function by living “in Christ”.

Christian teaching gives particular emphasis on the life and work of Jesus the Christ summed up in the word “salvation”. The word itself comes from late Latin translation of the Greek and carries the meaning ‘to make whole’: to allow for constructive human behaviour. The concept of salvation is grounded in the belief that Jesus in and by his life and work was a life that was ‘whole’, so that life is not a tale told by an idiot.

Thus, life is when both individually and collectively, it is declared we live but this is because in all things done in Christ Jesus and by growing ‘in Christ’ progressively, salvation is achieved. As Saint Paul argues ‘let us work out our salvation’. Sickness, disease, death, natural disasters etc can take their toll but the ‘whole’, the full reality is achieved governed by hope and conviction in Christ Jesus.

FAITH – MOSAIC COMMUNITY CHURCH (LLANDILO)

Changing Our Obituary …

In 1928, seven of the richest men in the world (who collectively controlled more money than the US treasury) met together at the Edgewater Beach Hotel in Chicago. For years, newspapers and magazines had been printing their success stories with advice on how others could follow their examples. Sadly though, less than 25 years later and two of them had already died broke, another two had spent time in prison, and three had committed suicide.

On the other hand, about 100 years ago a Swedish chemist by the name of Alfred Nobel awoke one morning to read his own obituary in the newspaper: “Alfred Nobel, the inventor of dynamite, died yesterday. He devised a way for more people to be killed in a war than ever before, and he died a very rich man.”

Actually, it was Alfred’s older brother who had died, and a newspaper reporter had bungled the obituary. But the account had a profound effect on Nobel who decided that he wanted to be known for something other than developing the means to kill people efficiently. He also felt guilty for amassing a fortune in the process – and so he initiated what has become known as the Nobel Peace Prize which is awarded to those who foster peace. Nobel said, “Every person ought to have the chance to correct their obituary in midstream and write a new one.”

Jesus himself once put it like this: “Be on your guard against all kinds of greed for ‘LIFE’ does not consist in the abundance of one’s possessions, but rather is to be found by being rich towards God and others” (i.e., in faith, hope, and love).

Harmony Week: Supporting Kids to Understand & Accept Diversity

Australia is home to one of the oldest continuous cultures, as well as Australians who identify with over 270 ancestries. Our cultural diversity is one of our strengths and an important source of national identity. However, racism remains a destructive force in Australian society. Research shows that social attitudes first take root in early childhood. Children learn prejudice from the grown-ups around them in the same way that they develop language.

Children learn the most by observing the behaviour of adults around them. Children listen carefully to how parents and caregivers speak about different groups in society and may adopt similar attitudes accordingly. Likewise, observing how parents and caregivers interact with different members of society teaches children how to behave around people who are different to them. Parents and caregivers who model kind words and actions set a valuable example for children to follow.

It is important to respond to children’s questions with matter of fact and age-appropriate explanations. Young children are naturally curious and often notice physical differences between people early on. For example, a child may notice that another child at her day care has a darker skin tone and asks you about this. An appropriate response might be, “some people have different skin colour and different eye colour and different hair colour.”

When discussing differences between people, point out and highlight the similarities as well. You can talk about how even though people look different, we all have similar feelings. Encourage children to seek out common interests or likes/ dislikes with children who might appear different to them. Sharing something in common, no matter how small, can bring different groups together.

Join in multicultural family events and experiences to learn more about the different cultural or religious groups in your community. Find out how your child’s school or early education centre is celebrating Harmony Week. For details on community events for the whole family, see harmony.gov.au.

As parents and caregivers, you can play an important role in helping children understand, respect, and appreciate cultural diversity.

Coalition Doubles Down on Investment in Jordan Springs Students

Premier

Mr Perrottet said only a NSW Liberal and Nationals Government has the track record to deliver this vital infrastructure for communities across Western Sydney.

“We know how important it is to provide local families with great schools and thanks to our long-term economic plan, we’re able to build on our investment in Jordan Springs Public School by committing to a new high school in this growing community,” said Mr Perrottet.

“Our track record speaks for itself with billions of dollars invested in major projects across Western Sydney. This new high school will provide students with access to a world class education right here in their community.”

Ms Mitchell said local families can trust the NSW Liberal and Nationals Government to deliver this project.

“Only a Liberal and Nationals Government can ensure this project is delivered for the local community. This government has invested more than $167 million in Londonderry, including the new Jordan Springs Public School, and it is this government that will deliver a new high school,” said Ms Mitchell.

“The school community should be excited for school to start next week with these amazing, upgraded facilities at Jordan Springs Public School, and this is just one of the many schools we are delivering this term,”

“Since 2011, we have delivered 60 major projects across Western Sydney with another 50 underway and we will continue to invest in growing communities right across the state.”

The NSW Government is investing $8.6 billion in school infrastructure over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver 160 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This builds on the more than $9.1 billion invested in projects delivered since 2017, a program of $17.7 billion in public education infrastructure.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT

Peachtree hotel

54 Peachtree rd, Penrith NSW 2750

Lunch at the Peachtree Hotel with Kylie, Katie and I was superb.

When we arrived, we were deciding on a few different options to try and settled on a share plate of cheeseburger spring rolls to begin with. The cheeseburger spring rolls were exceptional and full of flavour. The rolls were crisp, not drowned in oil and actually tasted like a cheeseburger. The rolls contained meat, some mustard, pickle, and cheese along with other ingredients.

The second choice we decided on for lunch was the Sea Breeze Plate. This share plate is made for two people, however, we wanted to share it among the three of us and I am glad we did. The Sea Breeze Plate consisted of dill and lemon battered blue eye whiting, grilled scallops, salt, and pepper squid, grilled crispy skinned barramundi, smoked salmon, garden salad, chips, dipping sauces and smoky BBQ sauces. This Sea Breeze Plate was amazing. The grilled scallops were presented in a shell which was round, and these scallops had a smooth texture. When you bit into the scallops, the flavour was immediately noticeable and wasn’t too strong. The sauce on the scallops had a slight lemon taste and the sauce gave extra flavour to the scallops. Without the sauce, the scallops would have been dry. I was impressed with the garden salad, along with the dressing and for something a little different I placed some smoked salmon on top of the salad. The salmon and salad together made your taste buds sing and this salad was one of the best salads I have tasted in a very long time. I really enjoyed the salt and pepper squid and the grilled barramundi.

The experience today was exceptional, and the staff looked after Kylie, Katie and I.

With International Women’s Day taking place this month, Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk will be marking the occasion on their weekly community walk with an important event.

“We will be celebrating the achievements of us all as women on International Women's Day on Wednesday 8th of March. There will be guest speakers, light refreshments and drinks will be provided” said Angela Lambros of Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk.

The inspirational women’s group meet every Wednesday night (5:00pm from March to September and 6:00pm from October to February), outside the Coffee Club Nepean River for a free sponsored coffee, tea or hot chocolate that has been donated from supporting local organisations. They proceed to walk the Great River Walk at 6:00pm.

“Our hope is that this walk and talk creates a safe space for women to discuss their mental health, whilst bettering their physical health and creating meaningful social connections” Angela explained.

They are also planning significant events throughout the year, which include Easter, Mother’s Day, Women’s Health Week, Mental Health Week, R U OK Day, International Friendships Day, plus more to come.

Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk celebrated their 2nd Birthday in November 2022. Angela is proud of the group’s success in this time.

“We have enjoyed our women coming together in support of all thing’s health; socially, mentally, and physically to connect. We believe having a strong support system helps support people to overcome challenges and maintain a state of mental well-being. Many ladies have now created lifelong friendships.

“We have also really loved how much the community has come together in support of us, especially the Penrith Men's Walk and Talk and all the kind-hearted local sponsors in our local area. We are so excited for all of our upcoming events and all the new connections women in our community can make” she ended.

Their Centre is the only RDA in the Blue Mountains, serving the local area, Western Sydney and across the mountains as far as Lithgow.

They have Riding Therapy Classes and Horse Skills Sessions on Thursdays and Saturdays during the school term. During school holiday periods, they have individual and group sessions of Stable Management and Horse Skills for children with disabilities.

“We are always in need of new volunteers and will train people who have no experience with horses or disabilities, but a keen interest in becoming involved at RDA. We also require volunteers who prefer to do fundraising, maintenance, and gardening at the Centre” explained Brenda of Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains.

Brenda enjoys being a part of the team at Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains.

“Riding for the Disabled is a great organisation to become involved with. Volunteers gain new friends, experience caring for our special horses and see firsthand the difference and joy it brings to children and adults with disabilities” she said.

“RDA Blue Mountains receive no funding from Council or Government, but rely upon volunteer fundraising, donations, or sponsorship of our horses. If anyone would like to make a donation or local business sponsor one of our horses, please email us and we will forward information” Brenda replied.

Riding for the Disabled (RDA) Blue Mountains is located at 72 St. John’s Road in Blaxland. They can be contacted on Facebook (Riding for the Disabled Blue Mountains), via email at rdabluemountains@gmail.com or by phone on 02 4739 6829. Riding for the Disabled (NSW) also provides information regarding the organisation.

Can Simple Stretching Improve Your Cardiovascular Health?

Facilitated stretching is a part of almost every session of MET at our clinic. Stretching may reduce cardiovascular risk. In a 2017, study by Shinno etal. healthy women over 40yo were asked to stretch 3 times per week, for 3 or 6 months. They conducted 20-30 second static stretches of 15 muscle groups: trapezius, arm-flexors, deltoids, triceps, upper-back muscles (trapezius/ rhomboids), pectoralis major, latissimus dorsi, gastrocnemius, soleus, hip abductors, hip adductors, quadriceps, hamstrings, gluteus maximus, and lower erector spinae. Stretching intensity was participant-rated as “somewhat-heavy” to “heavy”.

To see whether the stretching routine had any long-term effects on blood vessels flexibility (compliance), researchers measured an index called RH-PAT both before and after 3 or 6 months of stretching. RH-PAT is determined by:

1. measuring normal arterial blood flow in the forearm, then

2. inflating an upper-arm cuff to stop blood flow for 5 minutes, then

3. releasing the cuff and measuring blood flow 1 min after cuff release.

4. Calculating the ratio of arm blood flow before cuffing and 1 min after cuff-release

5. This gives a ratio called the “reactive hyperaemia peripheral artery tonometry (RH-PAT) index”

RH-PAT is a “powerful predictor of all cause and cardiovascular

morbidity and mortality”. It can predict:

1. endothelial (blood vessel lining cell) dysfunction

2. coronary artery disease & atherosclerosis

3. microvascular dysfunction following sepsis

4. coronary plaque formation

The arteries of healthy people are flexible/dilatable and have a higher HR-PAT index; people with cardiovascular diseases have a low HR-PAT index because their arteries have difficulty dilating.

So, how did regular stretching effect participants artery’s ability to dilate (health)?

a. all study participants had an RH-PAT index below 1.67 at the start of the study

b. both 3 and 6 months of stretching improved RH-PAT index significantly

c. a further 6-months of no-stretching saw RH-PAT index return to pre-intervention values

These results suggest regular stretching can increase the compliance (flexibility) of arteries, reducing cardiovascular risk, and that regular stretching may lead to health benefits beyond increased muscle-flexibility. Importantly, once women stopped stretching, accrued cardiovascular benefits were slowly lost over the following 6 months. So, the old imperative idiom of ‘use it or lose it’ certainly applies to the cardiovascular benefits of stretching too.

The Importance of Desexing your Cat

It has been calculated that, in just seven years, one female cat and her offspring can produce as many as 420,000 kittens. This is a major problem and highlights the importance of desexing male and female cats at an early age to reduce the number of unwanted animals in our community.

In addition to preventing unwanted litters, desexing may result in a positive behavioural change in your cat. Desexing may also minimise the chance of your cat developing reproductive organ-related health issues that can threaten your cat's life.

A desexed cat (male or female) are less likely to

• Wander or run away. Desexed cats generally have a reduced inclination to roam, which means they are less likely to roam off your property and reduces the risk of traffic accidents. It also increases the likelihood that your desexed cat will adapt better to a live indoors.

• Become involved in fights over territory or mating partners. This reduces the likelihood of injuries such as abscesses and infected wounds which may be fatal.

• Contract Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV). Also known as Feline AIDS, this can be contracted through fighting with other infected cats.

• Develop tumours such as uterine, ovarian and mammary (breast) cancer in females and possibly testicular cancer in

males.

• Display anti-social behaviour towards people or other animals. This makes pet ownership less enjoyable and disrupts the human-pet bond.

• Spray or mark its territory, which is usually in the house.

A cat can have an average of 4–6 kittens per litter. Each kitten must be fed, wormed, and treated for fleas. It is also a legal requirement that each kitten be vaccinated and microchipped before they are sold or given away. These costs can add up, making desexing a much easier and less expensive option.

The appropriate age for desexing can vary depending on the breed and size of your cat. Generally, it is best done before puberty (approximately six months of age) although the operation can be done at a later age. Local Council regulations require cats to be desexed by four months of age unless a letter of exemption is supplied by the treating veterinarian.

If you would like more information about desexing, microchipping or registration of your cat phone and chat with our friendly team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on 0247 362 027.
