Council And Community To Plan The Future Of St Marys
Penrith City Council is embarking on an aspiring strategic plan to guide the future of St Marys, Penrith’s second largest town centre, and a strategic centre in greater Sydney. St Marys is undergoing major transformation coinciding with the delivery of the Sydney Metro Western Sydney Airport rail line connecting St Marys directly to the Western Sydney Airport from 2026. With this transformation in mind, Council is gathering information from St Marys residents, businesses and visitors to develop a Structure Plan for St Marys Town Centre that will guide planning and development in line with community aspirations and vision for the Town Centre. Penrith Mayor Tricia Hitchen said the St Marys Structure Plan aims to manage growth and change in St Marys as it develops in the future. “We have seen through engaging with the community how we can plan for the future of our city which results in a shared vision that delivers great outcomes,” Cr Hitchen said. “I would like to see the whole community get on board with this journey, it won’t happen overnight, but through careful planning and consultation with the community we can manage the growth of St Marys while also delivering a range of amenity for residents, businesses and the wider community,” Cr Hitchen said. The early engagement will provide opportunities to understand community strengths and interests, and provide residents, workers and visitors in St Marys the opportunity to share their ideas, aspirations, concerns and needs. This valuable community input will be used to develop a structure plan for the town centre which will be placed on community exhibition before the end of the year. Remote Witness Room Completed At Penrith Courthouse
New facilities to help empower domestic violence complainants and other vulnerable witnesses to give their best evidence in court have been installed at Penrith Courthouse. Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith said the new remote witness room was delivered as part of a $9 million Commonwealth COVID-19 stimulus funding package. “These new facilities will give vulnerable witnesses private, secure areas to prepare for court and to provide testimony, therefore enabling them to give their best evidence during proceedings,” Stuart Ayres said. “Having to potentially face your abuser, or their family members, in open court can clearly exacerbate the stress of coming to testify, which is why these safe and remote facilities are so valuable. “It is really heartening to see our region benefit from these critical new amenities that will enhance support for courageous domestic violence victim-survivors who come forward to report abuse.” Attorney General and Minister for Prevention of Domestic and Sexual Violence Mark Speakman said these facilities meant vulnerable people would feel safer when coming to court. “Victim-survivors of domestic, family and sexual violence have commonly been through serious trauma and coming to court can be an understandably stressful experience,” Mr Speakman said. “Our government is committed to supporting victim-survivors if they choose to report to police, and we want them to know that these discrete facilities are available to support them and to help alleviate the trauma of testifying when they come to court.” As part of a suite of reforms passed last November, complainants in domestic violence criminal proceedings and related apprehended domestic violence order proceedings now have a prima facie entitlement to give evidence remotely via AVL and in a closed court. For confidential advice, support and referrals, contact: 1800 RESPECT (1800 737 732), The NSW Domestic Violence Line (1800 65 64 63), NSW Rape Crisis (1800 424 017) or Men’s Referral Service (1300 766 491). In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000).

An Embrace of Support
Beginning on 16th May, A Butterfly’s Embrace will be hosting an Informal Parent Support Group for Pregnancy and Infant Loss at Ropes Crossing Community Hub. The Support Group will run weekly, every Monday evening from 6:30pm to 8:30pm for those who have experienced pregnancy and/or infant loss. “We will be providing a relaxed and comfortable environment for bereaved families to have a coffee and chat, to talk about their stories of loss if they feel comfortable to do so and be amongst people who understand the unique journey of being a parent who has lost their baby” said Naomi Smith, President, and Founder of A Butterfly’s Embrace. “This environment of support is open to everyone; both men and women, no matter how long ago their loss occurred. This is a safe place to share our stories and feel the comfort of mutual support” she added. A Butterfly’s Embrace is a not-for-profit that was founded in 2020. Their objective is to facilitate opportunities for grieving parents and families to meet and form relationships of understanding and support. Future events planned include a Prayer Flag Workshop for August 19th Day of Hope, Bereaved Father’s Day BBQ on 28th August and their largest event of the year which is a Twilight Picnic and Lantern Lighting Ceremony at Werrington Lakes for 15th October International Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day. Construction is also underway for their Butterfly Kisses Remembrance Garden in the Hawkesbury, with hope for the garden to be completed this year. The community can support A Butterfly’s Embrace through connecting, donating, and volunteering. “Support can come through connecting and interacting with us on social media, donating to support projects and events such as the building of our garden and volunteering your time and/or talents” ended Naomi. With the whistles now blown, signalling the start of the 2022 Penrith District Netball Association Winter Competition, Jordan Springs Netball Club are ready for the season ahead. This year marks their 6th season in the local competition, after it was established in 2017. This season will see 21 teams taking the court, consisting of approx. 200 players. They will represent the club from the Under 7’s to Seniors. The pandemic affected last season and the competition was unable to be completed. This year, a full season including finals is anticipated for the sport. “Despite not being able to finish last season, we were happy to still get some games in for the kids. We also had two new umpires badged and the first of our players within the club achieved 5 years of membership” explained Michelle Barnes, President of Jordan Springs Netball Club. With all teams filled for the Winter Competition, there are currently still vacancies in the Under 11’s. “The club is looking forward to a full season this year. Anything else is a bonus. We are excited to have new inclusive uniforms for our players. This gives them a variety of items that they can choose to wear” she said. They would like to thank their sponsors, including Everything Concrete, Novus Law Group, Sweet Health, The Agency, Fit4All and JAW Trophies and Sports, for their support. The 2023 season will see the inclusion of Mixed Teams into the Penrith District Netball Association Competition. Keep an eye out for updates! Let the Kids Play: The Value of Play for Children’s Development “Play is the work of the child,” according to physician and educator Maria Montessori. As our understanding of child development deepens, the value of play has only become more apparent. ‘Free play’ describes play that is unplanned, spontaneous, and led by the child’s curiosity, interest, or imagination. For example, a child starts to draw and decides to create their own board game on the page or to create their own map of the house. Free play is crucial for optimal physical, cognitive, social, and emotional development. Physical play involves moving the body and can look like kicking a ball around the yard or learning a new dance. This helps to build children’s muscles and bones. Constructive play is all about creating something, examples include building a block tower, painting a picture, and playing a song on a musical instrument. This supports children’s capacity to solve problems, connect new ideas and follow their curiosity. Social play happens when your child plays with other children. This gives children opportunities to develop important social skills such as cooperation, communication, and language. Fantasy play is when children use their imagination to create worlds and characters, for example playing dress up or pretending to be a mum and baby. These activities support social and cognitive skills. At Nepean Community and Neighbourhood Services, we offer free supported playgroups. Supported playgroups provide a fun and safe place for children to explore and engage with developmentally enriching activities such as sing-a-longs, story time, arts, craft, and free play. Playgroups are a great place to connect with other families in your area. Our friendly and knowledgeable staff are here to answer any burning parenting questions you may have, and to offer ideas for maximising play at home. The 25th Women in Super Mother’s Day Classic will once again bring Australians together on Mother’s Day to celebrate and honour those affected by breast cancer and raise vital funds for breast cancer research. On Sunday, May 8, 2022, supporters across the nation can walk, run or jog to unite for the silver anniversary of this iconic Australian event which does so much to lead in the fight against breast cancer. Over 1.5 million people have participated in the Mother’s Day Classic for breast cancer research over the past 24 years, making it Australia’s largest annual charity fun run and walk. “Major events are back! We are so excited to announce that there will be up to 70 event locations in major cities, metro areas and regional towns for Australians to register and get active for breast cancer research in 2022,” said Mother’s Day Classic CEO, Zara Lawless. “After two challenging years, having to first go virtual and then go local, the Mother’s Day Classic is now ready to deliver a fun and inspiring event experience in a COVID-safe manner that you won’t want to miss”. In Western Sydney, participants will experience the true magic of traditional MDC events. There will be the buzz of the event village, live entertainment, music and food stalls to enjoy throughout the morning on Mother’s Day. “It’s great to be welcoming back our traditional MDC event experiences and celebrating 25 years of impact with communities right across the nation,” Ms Lawless said. “We cannot wait to see everyone in their pink attire and communities coming together on Mother’s Day to connect and raise awareness for the cause”. If you prefer staying local this year, there is an option to walk or run at one of the many local events that will be held across Australia on Mother’s Day. And if you can’t join one of the MDC physical events on Mother’s Day, you can personalise an event to create your very own MDC experience and take part on a different day, time, or location. We all want what’s best for our dogs. After all, they are part of the family. For Jordan Springs resident Sara Kozman, it was her faithful dog Charlie that inspired her to create a successful small business, Woof Wiggle Wag Dog Treats. Sara created Woof Wiggle Wag Dog Treats in 2020. What started out as a hobby has grown into something that is now loved and adored by many furry four-legged friends. “Charlie, my 13-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel was my motivation. After making homemade dog treats with real ingredients for him, I found that he was healthy and would revert to his old self. Seeing this made me realise that I could share this same good quality, healthy food with my family and friends with dogs and eventually customers” said Sara to the Jordan Springs Gazette. Her range of products include dog cookies and dog cakes. The cookies come in a variety of flavours, including carrot, sweet potato, pumpkin, and banana. The dog cakes are made with carrot and peanut butter, whilst the frosting is cream cheese or mashed potato. The dog cakes are very popular for dog’s birthdays, or Barkdays, as their owners prefer to call them. The many themes throughout the year have allowed Sara to be creative when designing and baking the cookies. Her previous range has included The Grinch for Christmas, Hearts for Valentine’s Day, and Bunny Rabbits for Easter. “My plans are to add to the range of dog cakes in the future. I’d love to give my customers more to choose from on their pet’s special day” she smiled. Orders can be made through Woof Wiggle Wag Dog Treats’ Facebook and Instagram pages. Sara currently services Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs only and pick up is available in Jordan Springs. For delivery options, contact their social media. “I enjoy receiving feedback from my customers. Seeing photos of their dogs enjoying their treats is really a great feeling” concluded Sara. r Charlie celebrating his 12th birthday with a Barkday Cake[Inset] Sara with her 2 dogs, Ace, and Charlie | Images: Sara Kozman

Joining Corinne as newly elected Deputy Captains was Thomas Jones and Craig Jones. Their appointment was made on 5th April, and this increases the operational capability to nine field officers at Llandilo. “I’m truly honoured to not only become a Deputy at Llandilo, also honoured to become the first female DC (Deputy Captain) of Llandilo. They have all been so supportive of me” said Deputy Captain Corrine. “I believe it was a very special moment for Corrine. Not only has she reached a milestone in her career, but it made it all that more special for her knowing that she has become the Brigades first female Deputy Captain” explained Captain Joshua Gow of Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade to the Jordan Springs Gazette. Made even more special was the fact that Corrine also celebrated 22 years of service in the Rural Fire Brigade on the day of her appointment. Corrine transferred to Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade from Wentworth Falls Rural Fire Brigade in 2018. The role of a Deputy Captain within the RFS is typically an all-rounder. Deputy Captains are required to have good operational knowledge and leadership skills, as they are required to oversee a crew during incidents, hazard reductions and other operational requirements. They will also participate in brigade management functions, assisting with training and most importantly mentoring newer members and assisting them achieve their goals. Llandilo Rural Fire Brigade are currently not accepting new cadets; however, they are seeking more senior members which is anyone over the age of 16. The club was formed in March 2018, to service Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs and joins the fray with over 1,700 clubs with more than 125,000 members all over Australia and New Zealand. March saw our AGM, with the election of the committee to manage our club for the upcoming year. During our April meeting, we had Len Butler and his off sider talking about strokes. Please don’t be put off, as they both have some good stories to tell. Later in the year, we have Johnny Pace entertaining us with his stories of his life in the public eye. Apart from attending monthly meetings and getting to know fellow members with a cuppa and biscuit, you will have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of pursuits, travel locally or around the world, enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme, have access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance plans, develop new interests and stay active. The club currently has a regular lunch at a local venue on the second Tuesday of each month, a monthly outing, and special events such as Xmas in July. The life, work, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ: is it possible to argue that it is relevant for today? The answer itself defies demonstration as it is answered in faith based upon reason and an understanding of history. The choice does it not, come down to a decision based on ‘yes’ or’ no’ to the challenge of its relevancy. Passion Week and Good Friday sets out the question why did Jesus offer his life? It is interesting that in the lead up to his trial and death he did not confront his followers but invited them to a meal. That meal became a constant in Christian worship following his resurrection. The meal records the words “the blood of the Covenant that is shed for many”. This is an ancient sacrificial concept that is somewhat foreign in our day and generation, but when reason is applied to gain understanding the first surprise is the greater our efforts to understand the greater is the silence of Jesus. This silence comes about when we look to ourselves and note the dominance of selfishness both at individual and community level. People are happy to follow a life that takes rather than gives. This becomes evident in a lot of religious practice: God will give and make me happy! However, the meal that Jesus invites us to is the reverse: ’I will lose my life but in doing so will gain life’: even death will not separate us from that Life. As always, the moment is always part of the eternal. As such the meal is the essential core of the Faith as the meal (Holy Communion) in sharing the bread and the wine is the outward visible sign of the actual sharing of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Our faith gives the affirmation that it is relevant. FAITH – MOSAIC COMMUNITY CHURCH (LLANDILO) Article Written + Submitted by: Heath Whiley A: Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 0402 712 972 W: www.jordanspringsmosaic.com Service Times: 4PM Sundays at the Llandilo Community Hall
The Good News According to … Gladiator The Russell Crowe film Gladiator is remembered for many things, but for many people, there are two quotes in particular which stand out. One is at the beginning of the film as Russell Crowe’s character (Maximus) reminds his soldiers that “Brothers; what we do in life, echoes in eternity.” The second is part way through the film, when after having just fought to save his life, he yells at the crowd who have come out (hoping for him to fail?) that, “Are you not entertained!?” But I wonder whether the theme of the movie is in one sense set forth by another of the characters: namely, Marcus Aurelius. Knowing that he is nearing the end of his life, he wonders about the purpose of it all, and so turns to Maximus and tells him, that, “When a man sees his end, he wants to know there was some purpose to his life. How will the world speak of my name in years to come?” The overall teaching of the Bible is that we have been made by God and for God so that we might know Him as He really is, and thus enjoy Him. Indeed, it is this as the very purpose and goal of life which finds its fulfilment in heaven. Thus, biblically speaking, what we do here, and how we respond to God now, will therefore, in one way or another echo in eternity. “Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom (Psalm 90:2)

HEALTH MATTERS

Most people don’t realise that there are 2 forms Of Vitamin K with different Functions There are two forms of Vitamin K, Vitamin-K1 and K2. Vitamin-K1 is high in green leafy vegetables and other foods such as kiwifruits and dried prunes. Vitamin-K2 comes from fermented foods. The two forms clearly have different roles in the body. Vitamin-K1 is vital for both producing blood clots to stop blood loss. It also stops inappropriate blood clotting. For example, unwanted clots in blood could lodge in the leg veins, lung, or heart arteries, causing DVT, pulmonary embolism or heart attack respectively. Though Vitamin-K2 is synthesized from Vitamin-K1 in brain, liver, and pancreas; food scientists have recommended a separate RDI from Vitamin-K1. Vitamin-K2 helps improve outcomes for osteoporosis, atherosclerosis, cancer, and inflammatory diseases. For 1,000 years (30 generations), natto, the world’s richest Vitamin-K2 source, has been eaten in Northern Japanese cuisine, without any adverse side-effects. Natto is one reason for Japanese people having lower fracture risks and better bone density/ strength than other countries. Within Japan, the higher the natto consumption the lower the age-related bone loss. Supplemented Vitamin-K2 is also very safe. In Japan, doctors regularly prescribe 45 mg/day (15 mg MK-4 three times a day) of Vitamin-K2 to osteoporotic women. Worldwide, Vitamin-K2 trials have used doses as low as 10 μg, up to 45 mg/day for several years with no adverse side effects.
12 May 2022 www.jordanspringsgazette.com.au
Even doses of 135 mg/day had no adverse side effects. Recently, Japanese postmenopausal women given just 350 μg/ week of MK-7 showed significantly reduced osteoporotic fracture risk. Vitamin-K2 deficiency is established in haemodialysis patients and implicated as the link between high rate of vascular calcification, bone mineral density loss, and fracture rate of these patients. Vitamin-K2 supplementation studies also suggests potential benefit for cardiovascular disease, type II diabetes and for patients with chronic kidney disease. From a clinical nutrition perspective, it’s generally more beneficial to eat foods rich in Vitamin-K1 or K2 rather than supplement. Why? Foods allow a person to cover multiple bases. For example, bone loss rate is dependent on Vitamin-K2 intake, and protein intake (amongst many other factors). When a person eats natto, they’ll get excellent, highly bio-available levels of protein, Vitamin-K2, together with many other bone-healthy factors, in the one food.

A Wonderful Night at the Drive-In As a thank you to our clients, families, and friends, we recently invited them to join us to see the movie Clifford The Big Red Dog. We hired out an entire cinema at Skyline Drive-In Blacktown on Saturday 2nd April 2022. The night’s celebrations were a triple thank you to everyone for: 1. 12th Year Anniversary of owning the business of Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 2. Thank you for your patience with us whilst we do contactless consultations due to COVID 3. We are winners of the 2021 Penrith Small Business Awards – Best Pet Care What a great night we had at the Drive-In! Thank you to all
those who attended. The staff were at the front gate welcoming everyone as they arrived and handed out the Candy Bar vouchers. It was great to see everyone’s smiling faces, after two years of contactless consultations. My face was hurting from smiling so much. So many cars were packed full of kids. Even the adults were being kids again. Some people even brought their own dogs along to watch the movie. I surprised everyone before the movie, with a pre-recorded thank you message, which was shown on the big screen! Check out the welcome speech video on YouTube at https://youtu.be/iT3NLqYO1zo and some of the highlights of the night at https://youtu.be/rDSk783cBg8. You can also see the videos on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.

This month we stop to cherish our Mums on Mother’s Day. To all our mothers, grandmothers, and wonderful role models in our lives, we wish you a delightful Mother’s Day. May your children bring you joy and with any luck breakfast in bed. For those whose Mums were taken too soon, treasure the magic moments and memories that spark joy and happiness of better days before it. We get a real kick out of all the happenings in and around the community, May is no exception! Moreover, the Election has been called I’m sure we’re not the only ones who can’t wait for it to be behind us. For now, sit back, don’t forget your pencil for the puzzles, relax with a cuppa or cold drink while we start compiling the June edition for your reading pleasure! Remember, it’s not what we have in life, but who we have in our lives that matter.
