Saints Announce David Cartwright as President as Club Begins a New Era
St Marys Rugby League Club is thrilled to announce the appointment of David Cartwright as the new President of the Board.
This significant leadership transition follows the recent retirement of esteemed long-standing President Warren Smith OAM.
The appointment has seen the following key changes made to the newly reconfigured board:
1. David Cartwright President
2. Ron Coskerie Senior Vice President
3. John Burns Vice President
4. Steve Shearer newly appointed Board Director
The Cartwright name is synonymous with Saints. David’s father, Merv Cartwright was Secretary of the Junior League and coached sides in the 1970s. Like David, all his siblings, including rugby league international John Cartwright and sister Mary, played rugby league for the Club, as did David’s two sons, Ben, and Bryce Cartwright.
With an impressive 55 years of active involvement in the Club, David Cartwright brings a rich legacy to his new position. As a former player, he received the highest accolade – the Club’s prestigious Life Members Trophy. Beyond his playing days, David made substantial contributions by coaching, training, and mentoring junior league sides. His nearly quarter-century service on the Junior League Committee exemplifies his dedication.
In 1997, David was elected to the Board, and in 2013 he was appointed Vice President. His unwavering commitment to the Club was further recognised in 2005 when he was given Life Membership as voted by the members.
David’s commitment to rugby league extends beyond Saints and his influence in rugby league and leagues clubs is evident; underscored by his recent appointment to the Board of Leagues Clubs Australia. Now, as President of St Marys Rugby League Club Board, he will lead Saints into an exciting new era.
During the recent Season Launch, David expressed his enthusiasm for the new role, acknowledged the extremely big shoes he must now fill and welcomed Steve Shearer to the Saints family.
“Steve’s appointment continues a proud tradition of the next generation following in their fathers’ footsteps,” he said.
“Notably the Dicker brothers, Simon, and Ben, who carry forward the legacy of their father, Tony Dicker, our inaugural President; and Senior Vice President Ron Coskerie carrying forward the mantle of his Dad, affectionately known as “Cossie”.
Steve Shearer’s association with Saints began over 40 years ago when he donned the mighty green and white jersey for over 200 games, later volunteering as a trainer for various junior league sides and Assistant Coach of the A Grade.
Now, Steve proudly follows in the footsteps of his father, Brian Shearer who was a Board member for some 10 years under Warren Smith’s presidency.
As they embark on this exciting chapter, they honour the past while embracing the future. Saints Rugby League Club remains committed to excellence, both on and off the field.

Sowing the Seeds
This month, Seedtime Arts and Crafts in Ropes Crossing will be celebrating their first birthday.
The local arts and crafts group started on 30th May 2023 in Ropes Crossing Community Hub Craft Room. They are an outreach group from Seedtime and Harvest Ministry Church, which meets in the Hub on Sundays.
“Our motivation in starting this group stemmed from a number of things. Our desire to reach out to people in the community who are feeling isolated and looking for real people to connect with, not just on social media. Our awareness that many of us have a want to express our creativity in a physical, and practical way. And of course, our own creative skills that we want to channel in a way that ministers to others” said Elisabeth Osland of Seedtime Arts and Crafts.
The group meets every Tuesday from 11:30am to 1:30pm, during school term times. They break for school holidays. Costs to attend are a $5 donation, which covers all materials in their craft activities and also coffee or tea and a light lunch.
“Occasionally, we may ask for a little more, for example our succulent plant activity was $8 to cover the cost of materials. However, if someone is struggling with this payment, we are still happy for them to participate, as long as they promise to enjoy our company!” she stated.
Their activities have covered a wide range, including crochet, diamond dotz, jewellery, paint by number, cake decorating, succulent plants, macrame and fuse beads. All skills levels are welcome. They have members who are skilled in many crafts as well as those who have never been involved in craft activities
and are trying it for the first time.
“We have a desire to see our group grow and involve many more people in the community. We are constantly looking for new craft activities and love having people suggest activities that they would like to attempt. One of the activities we are hoping to present in the next few months is Learning to Sew, which we will be able to do as soon as we gain more access to more sewing machines. We would also like to develop Seedtime Arts and Crafts for Kids, which we would run during the School holidays” Elisabeth explained.
For more information, visit the Seedtime Arts and Crafts page on Facebook for regular announcements regarding their activities.

Mother’s Day – More Than Cold Tea and Toast
The tradition of Mothering Sunday began in the Middle Ages, when the custom of allowing those who had moved away from home to work, could visit their home parishes and mothers on the fourth Sunday of Lent. The modern version, Mother’s Day, is held in Australia on the second Sunday of May each year.
As Mother’s Day looms for another year, many of us spend some time thinking about our mothers, while the mothers among us spend time wondering how our own performance as mothers is panning out, and crucially, how it will be judged into the future.
One thing is clear to mothers of all ages and eras: mothering is challenging and demanding work. It never ends, and every decision will be held up for scrutiny for years to come. Who among us ever made a good decision wandering around the house looking for scissors to cut some knots out of your hair because you haven’t brushed it for weeks, the baby refuses to sleep, and you haven’t had a shower in 3 days?
And so, as Sunday 12 May rolls around, we stop to think about our mothers and the sacrifices they made - and continue to make for us. It is a time to show them that we appreciate them, because as sure as your mum told you to enjoy the time while your baby is little, our mums grow older as we are busy with life, and before we know it, they are gone forever.
We buy them chocolates, take them out for dinner, we get Grandma some new slippers, and sometimes we get a breakfast in bed of warm tea and cold toast. When I think back over the Mothers Days that I have been lucky enough to enjoy with my daughter, the one that stands out is the lukewarm tea and gift from the Mother’s Day stall at school. It takes me straight back to a little room in a hostel with two beds jammed in, everything we owned in a cupboard in the corner, and every night her little warm arms hugging me goodnight.
I would not have missed it for all the knots in my hair.

Cambridge Park – St Marys Basketball Club (CPSM) have just completed the 2023/2024 Summer season, with great success on the court in the Penrith District Basketball Association (PDBA) Competition.
This season, there were 36 teams, consisting of 258 players representing the local club. 13 teams made the Semi-Final series and 6 teams won through to the Grand Finals. All 6 of their teams won their Grand Finals.
There were many highlights this year, both on and off the basketball court.
“CPSM Basketball Club introduced a stylish, new uniform. It was great to see all of our players fitted out, especially the Under 10’s who were so proud of their new uniforms” said Mel Innins of Cambridge Park – St Marys Basketball Club.
“Having all our 6 teams win their Grand Finals was one of our best results in recent years”.
“Our club also had 19 girls, 11 boys and 7 coaches selected in the Penrith District Basketball Association (PDBA) representative program teams, which is fantastic” she continued.
Attention now turns towards the upcoming 2024 Winter season, which begins shortly.
235 players will suit up for 33 teams, ensuring another bumper competition.
“Registrations have mostly closed for the Winter season. We do have minimal space available in some age groups, mainly girls, but are always looking for volunteer coaches to help with our teams” Mel replied to the Jordan Springs Gazette.
The club welcomes any sponsors that would like to join the CPSM Basketball family.
“We would love to have a sponsor or any donations to help alleviate the cost for our members and teams to play basketball and allow us to continue to grow and develop future stars” she concluded.

Embracing Mindfulness: A Parent’s Guide to Being Present With Their Children.
You may have heard the term mindfulness in relation to personal wellbeing, but have you considered mindful parenting? So, what is mindfulness and how do you include it in the everyday hustle?
Mindfulness in a Nutshell
Mindfulness is the practice of being fully present in the here and now, without judgement or distraction. Paying deliberate attention to our thoughts, feelings, bodily sensations, and environment, without getting caught up in it. Mindfulness can be practiced in the everyday by mindful eating, mindful walking, or simply paying attention to the task at hand like washing dishes. The trick is to tune into your thoughts, feelings, body, and surroundings. Have you ever just stopped to think about the sun on your face or the sounds of the birds, as go for a walk?
Benefits of Mindfulness
The benefits include reduced stress, improved emotional regulation and sleep, enhanced parent-child relationships, better decision-making abilities, increased empathy and compassion, and increased focus and attention.
Mindful parenting creates increased family harmony, emotional resilience in children, and deeper connections and understanding within the family.
Meditation as a tool
Whilst meditation allows you to be present for a set period, the aim of mindfulness is to remember to come back to the present during the day. Regular meditation practice is known to have benefits including changing and rewiring our brains, to more positive emotions and thoughts. Grey matter in the brain has been shown to increase with regular meditation, improving emotion regulation, planning, problem solving, learning, and memory. In addition, the amygdala, which controls fear, anxiety, and stress, reduces in size.
Mindfulness Techniques
Here are several techniques regularly used in meditation or everyday practice that can be used to develop mindfulness:
• Body Scan Meditation: A mental exercise where you scan your body from head to toe, paying attention to tension and discomfort in the body, and gently releasing it.
• Mindful Breathing: Focus on each inhale and exhale, paying attention to the natural rise and fall of the chest and the stomach. Just a few minutes every day is enough to encourage mental clarity and relaxation.
• Mindful eating: Next time to you eat, pause, and think about how the food’s texture, how it smells, looks, and tastes. This is often a fun activity for children.
• Structured meditation: There are many apps and websites with free mediations including Headspace, Calm, Insight, and Peaceful Kids.

Local Athlete Shines in High Jump
At just 11 years old, Sabella Whelan of Jordan Springs is making waves in the world of athletics, showcasing her talent and determination on the track and field. Her journey, marked by dedication and success, is one that inspires both her peers and spectators alike.
Sabella’s passion for athletics ignited at the tender age of 5, when she joined Cranebrook Little Athletics Club. Now, after six years of dedication and hard work, she continues to excel, recently expanding her horizons by competing for the Nepean Seniors Athletics Club.
“Competing with the Nepean Seniors Athletics Club has given Sabella the opportunity to compete in more competitions outside of Little Athletics NSW,” said her mother, Cristy Whelan.
“Her favourite event is High Jump” added Jamie Whelan, Sabella’s father.
At both the ANSW Youth Championships and the NSW Little Athletics State Championships held in March, Sabella clinched the gold medal in the Under 11 Girls High Jump category.
Despite facing a setback with a fall during the hurdles heats at the Little Athletics State event, Sabella regrouped, demonstrating resilience and focus to secure not only the win, but also a new personal best height of 1.45 metres.
While Sabella won’t be progressing to national championships this year due to age restrictions, her aspirations remain high. She aims to continue honing her skills during the offseason, setting her sights on future school competitions and the upcoming 2024/2025 NSW Little Athletics season, slated to kick off in October.
“Sabella is also a devoted netball player and will be focusing on the upcoming Winter competition, as well as her representative duties for the Penrith District Netball Association,” said Jamie.
Sabella’s remarkable achievements are a testament to her talent, hard work, and unwavering determination. As she continues to chase her dreams on and off the field, she embodies the spirit of perseverance and excellence, inspiring those around her to reach for the stars.
In the world of athletics, Sabella Whelan is undoubtedly a name to watch, a shining example of what dedication and passion can achieve at any age.

Big Year for Jordan Springs Probus Club
It’s been a busy time for Jordan Springs Probus Club recently, with the Annual General Meeting (AGM) and planning for the upcoming Biggest Morning Tea this month.
The local group held their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday March 26th and have cemented the committee positions, with an occupant for each role ready and willing to step up to the job.
First on the agenda is the Biggest Morning Tea, to be held on Tuesday May 28th at the Jordan Springs Community Hub. The idea is simple: host a morning tea, put the kettle on and raise some money for the Cancer Council of Australia. It is an important cause because one in two Australians will be diagnosed with cancer by age 85, meaning most of us will be impacted by cancer in our lifetime.
Probus provides retirees with the opportunity to connect socially, which is so important in today’s world. Membership is open to anyone who is retired or semi-retired, Probus Clubs offer a range of activities including trips and outings for members to enjoy, depending on their interests, lifestyle, and location.
They organise all sorts of outings including day trips to local areas and destinations outside of the area. This has included Cabramatta, Goulburn, Berrima, Jervis Bay, Garden Island, State Parliament, Nan Tien Temple, Menangle Trots, and the Blue Mountains. They also have monthly meetings with invited speakers.
Other tours have gone to Mauritius and Sri Lanka, Taiwan, and Norfolk Island.
If you are interested in joining Jordan Springs Probus Club, guests are welcome to come along to a meeting to get the feel and see if the group is right for them. You can also call Keith on 02 9713 9039 or Judy on 0414 766763, where all your questions can be answered.

Bro Fit Penrith: Building Bodies and Minds
In the bustling heart of Penrith lies a gym with a difference, where pumping iron meets mental resilience, and where strength is not just physical but mental too. Bro Fit Penrith, nestled at Unit 3, 37-39 York Road, Jamisontown, isn't just your average fitness centre—it's a sanctuary for men's health and wellbeing.
Founded by Tama and Kristal Te Huna, Bro Fit Penrith is run by Tama and James Te Huna with help from Lawrence Tauasa, Mark Lazare, Danny Denver, and Pio Misa. It is more than just a gym; it's a vision born from a passion for fitness and a commitment to mental health support.
With three beautiful children in tow, the Te Huna family embarked on the journey to provide a space where positivity reigns, and men can find solace amidst the weights and punching bags.
"We wanted to create a space where our boys, Jamie and Jordan, could train and be around positive role models," explained Tama and Kristal Te Huna. "But we also saw the pressing need for men's mental health support in our community. That's why we merged the idea of a men's only gym with mental health awareness programs."
Bro Fit Penrith offers a range of programs catering to all ages and fitness levels. From junior classes focused on strength and conditioning or boxing to adult sessions in the morning and afternoon, there's something for everyone. But it's not just about physical fitness; it's about fostering a supportive environment where men can open up about their mental health struggles without fear of judgment.
“A gym like ours plays a vital role in promoting the health and well-being of men in the community, by providing a supportive environment for physical fitness, whilst also addressing mental health concerns and fostering a sense of community and belonging,” they stated.
"We host guest speakers who address various topics around men's mental health, creating a safe space for our members to share and seek support."
For Tama and the team at Bro Fit Penrith, their mission goes beyond the gym walls. They envision expanding their reach across Australia and even venturing into New Zealand, spreading their message of holistic health and wellbeing.
Since its inception, Bro Fit Penrith has attracted attention from far and wide, with the Penrith Panthers and other well-known figures gracing its floors. But amidst the celebrity visits and bustling classes, the heart of Bro Fit Penrith remains rooted in its commitment to empowering men to be their best selves, both physically and mentally.

Don’t Let Your ‘Back Scans’ Define You!
One of the most often run examinations for back pain is a radiological scan - an X-ray, CT scan or MRI. All these scans are excellent in certain circumstances, and they can add valuable information to a clinical picture.
I see patients scans and the accompanying reports almost every day. Scans reveal many things, such as vertebrae with fractures, trophic or Modic changes, vertebrae with altered shapes, fused vertebra; many bulging or protruding discs, loss of disc height, osteophytes (bony outgrowths from vertebrae), stenosed (blocked) spinal canals and nerve exits, facet joint arthritis, etc. All these are possible causes of back pain, and proper diagnosis is vital.
Often what is revealed on a scan is very important and helpful re cause of back pain, the preferred treatment, and likely response. In some cases, scans may show a patient’s spine is in excellent condition and thus say little about the cause of their pain.
Sometimes patients come into the clinic having been told, based on scan results, that they’re just getting old, and that there is little that can be done about their pain or their state of
debility. Often such folk then simply put up with the pain, which is often quite high, even when on multiple medications, when help may be available. This is definitely where you shouldn’t let your back scans define you!
While not every case of back pain will be fixed with manual therapies, and indeed some people may need surgery or other treatments, simple intervention with appropriate muscle elongation therapy can often have surprising results. Using specific techniques, we remove inflammatory fluids from back tissues, lengthen back muscles, allowing back tissue function to normalise. With regular treatment over a few weeks or months, depending on the severity of the problem, in most cases chronic back pain goes completely, even in many long-standing cases.
If you have a problem with a back injury or back pain and you’d like to know more, call Andreas at BHW on 02 4777 5264 or 0418 166 269.

FOOD 4 THOUGHT
Wilson’s Kitchen and Bar cafe
1/252 high street, Penrith
This month, our lunchtime food review is of Wilson’s Kitchen and Bar Café, located where the Blind Chef Café used to be.
The Wilson’s, as it is known, offers corporate catering and functions, but during the day, it operates as a café. Offering an allday breakfast that includes burgers, rolls, wraps and eggs every way, an extensive addons list, some sweet offerings and a lunch menu that includes a couple of pasta dishes, there’s a wide range to choose from.
It is affordably priced these post COVID days, with most dishes between $19 to $25, medium coffees about $5.50. The menu does not specify gluten free, vegetarian, or vegan dishes, but the beverage menu offers lactose free, almond, oat, and soy options, which is standard these days.
I ordered one of the juices, Strawberry Sunset, which is made to order on site with fresh seasonal fruit. If you love a good fresh juice, here it is.
The staff were happy to accommodate requested changes to the dishes on the menu, as we swapped fried chicken for grilled chicken in one of the chicken burgers. They were also careful to check the food did not contain any sesame, which I am allergic to.
The Chicken Burger was served on a grilled bun with fresh salad veggies and crispy fried chicken, while the grilled chicken they cooked for our other burger was slightly over cooked and dry to our taste.
The side of chips that accompanied the burgers were everything you hope for with a good chip – thick cut, crispy, and tasty.
The café has a pleasant atmosphere, a nice place for lunch on a weekday.
Open 6am – 2pm weekdays.

At the Jordan Springs Probus group April meeting, we had the pleasure of hosting an informative talk from Catholic Health about the importance of exercise and staying healthy, particularly for seniors. It certainly left us all with a renewed commitment to our health.
Looking ahead, our calendar is filled with exciting presentations and events. In the coming months we are delighted to announce talks from local heroes the Fire Brigade, who will be sharing crucial tips on home safety, especially as winter nears and we get the heater out of the cupboard to warm our toes. Service NSW will also be talking to our group about the services they provide to the community. We will also have a local podiatrist shedding light on foot health, an often overlooked but vital aspect of ageing well.
This month, we are holding a special event close to our hearts – the annual Biggest Morning Tea for the Cancer Foundation. It is a time for us to come together and raise funds for a cause that touches so many lives.
Throughout the year, we will continue our tradition of monthly meetings, and we have a variety of other exciting events coming throughout the year.
For those eager to learn more about the Jordan Springs Probus Group, please do not hesitate to reach out. FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO
Article Written + Submitted by: Rev
John Hebblewhite

Service Times: 10am each Sunday with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
Over the last 2000 years and more, church worship has been a constant. Although there have been variations in the act of worship over those years, a common denominator remains: to pray and praise. And importantly, to continue what Jesus the Christ expects of us, with the ‘breaking of bread’. In the act of ‘breaking of bread’, the life, work, execution, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus is recalled. To this day, this remains the spiritual sustenance of the worshipper. Regardless of the variety of worship, four basic requirements surround the ‘breaking of bread’.
• First is preparation: to discipline oneself to be still and wind down from everyday thought, put simply, to wait on God.
• Second is to practice recognition: we are who we are, and in being honest with ourselves, we recognise our strengths and weaknesses.
• Third is trust: it is through the Holy Trinity that we have the freedom “to be”. Not in conformity to self, but in conformity to living. This enhances and helps us to appreciate the wonderful universe in which we live.
• Fourth is giving: before his execution, Jesus Christ did not preach a sermon. He invited his followers to a meal, the sacred ‘breaking of bread’ that has been a constant in Christian worship.
When we participate in the meal and honestly reflect, the result is that we are not motivated by ourselves but in all things (thoughts and actions) we do ‘in Christ’.
Life is short, and very few of us reach to be over 100 years in age. Life itself is a learning process which cannot ignore the spiritual dimension. That is why the sacred meal will always remain a constant. The meal is more than bread, it is the reality that God in Christ, through his Holy Spirit, feeds us, knowing that we live in Christ.
FAITH – MOSAIC COMMUNITY CHURCH (LLANDILO)

The First Question a Person Asked God
I noticed something in the Bible the other day that I have never noticed before in my 52 years: The very first question that a human asks God. Think about it. Of all the questions which the Bible could have recorded as mankind’s very first question to God, what would you have picked?
Unless I’m wrong, the first question a person asks of God comes in Genesis 4:9. The context is Cain having just murdered Abel, and God asked him “Where is your brother Abel?”, to which Cain petulantly responds “I don’t know. Am I my brother’s keeper?”
In other words, “I don’t know! Am I supposed to be responsible for him?”
Several thousand years later and we’re still asking the same question: Why are other people my responsibility? Are we responsible for others? The answer is “Yes we are!”
We are every bit as responsible for others as we are for ourselves, and especially when it is within our power to do good. In fact, being able to do good or render assistance, but then failing to do so, can lead to a person being charged with neglect under some circumstances. If that is how seriously our human laws regard it, then how much more should we regard it when it comes to God?
We are responsible for ourselves because we bear the image of God. We are responsible for others because they are too. Consequently, to see a need and fail to act when it is in our power to do so, is not only to devalue them, but also devalues God in whose image they were made. It also devalues Jesus, who willingly gave His life for them.

Article Written + Submitted by: Kellie Tickner from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital

For those stepping into the world of pet ownership for the first time, the abundance of choices can be overwhelming. From fish to furry friends, each option brings its own set of joys and responsibilities. Let’s explore some of the best pets for first-time owners, catering to various lifestyles and preferences.
Fish: Low-Maintenance and Therapeutic For those seeking a serene presence in their home, fish make excellent companions. With minimal maintenance requirements, they offer a gateway into the world of pet ownership. Regular feeding and tank upkeep are essential, but the tranquillity they bring is unparalleled. Scientifically proven to reduce stress and improve mental wellbeing, an aquarium can be a therapeutic addition to any household.
Dogs: Friendly and Smart For those craving companionship and loyalty, a dog might be the perfect fit. Opting for a low maintenance small to medium-sized breed such as an ‘oodle’ breed, greyhound or cross-breed can offer a balance of intelligence and sociability. Researching breeds known for their compatibility with various lifestyles ensures a harmonious relationship. Dogs not only provide unconditional love but also encourage outdoor activities, fostering a healthy lifestyle for their owners.
Cats: Independent and Affectionate Companions With their puzzling personalities, cats offer a blend of independence and affection. Their low-maintenance nature makes them suitable for individuals with busy schedules or limited living space. Cats thrive in various environments, from cozy apartments to spacious homes. Beyond their playful antics, they teach valuable life lessons to children, promoting responsibility and empathy.

Guinea Pigs: Easy, Social Starters For those seeking a cuddly companion without the demands of traditional pets, guinea pigs fit the bill. These sociable creatures require minimal upkeep and offer endless entertainment with their playful behaviour. Providing a comfortable habitat and nutritious diet ensures their well-being, while regular interaction fosters a strong bond between pet and owner.
Pocket Pets & Birds: Easy First-Time Care Ideal for those with limited time or space, pocket pets and birds offer effortless companionship. Whether it's a rabbit, ferret, or budgerigar, these low-maintenance pets adapt well to various lifestyles. Their simple care requirements make them an excellent choice for first-time owners, allowing them to ease into the responsibilities of pet ownership without feeling overwhelmed.
Ultimately, the best pet for a first-time owner depends on individual preferences, lifestyle, and level of commitment. Whether it's the calming presence of fish, the playful antics of a dog, or the independent charm of a cat, each option brings its own unique joys and challenges. By researching and selecting a pet that aligns with one's needs and capabilities, first-time owners can embark on a rewarding journey of companionship and responsibility.

Anyone who has lost and grieved a loved one knows the trepidation that one experiences as they approach a first, a special occasion or significant day.
Mothers Day is approaching, the second Sunday in May, traditionally a day to recognise our mothers, motherhood, maternal bonds and all those positively contributing to our families in such a role.
This Mothers Day marks 6 years without my amazing Mum. She was a force to be reckoned with, strong, determined, ambitious and creative.
Take some time to invest yourself deep into the lives of those who matter on Mothers Day, time is precious and not promised.
This month, plenty to read, see and do within these pages. Catch up on all the happenings in and across the community.
