New Trees to Help Transform Penrith A $1 million grant to Penrith City Council under the NSW Government’s Greening Our City program will see 5,000 new street and park trees planted across Penrith. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM said that she is delighted that this grant funding for our City is also being matched by another $1 million from Council. “These combined funds mean that we can undertake even more vital work to increase canopy levels across our Local Government Area, as part of Council’s Cooling the City strategy,” Cr McKeown said. “Trees funded under this program will be planted in St Marys, North St Marys, Colyton, Oxley Park, St Clair, and Erskine Park. Council wants to help make these areas greener places to be, with streets and parks that include more trees, to create better liveability for local residents”. Park tree planting work in Penrith under this program has already begun and will be complete in approximately mid-2022. Planting will not occur throughout the hot summer period in Western Sydney to give our trees the best chance of survival. The street tree planting program is scheduled to commence in late February next year. Research shows that street trees provide a wide range of benefits for suburban streets. Trees have been shown to improve the value of homes, while also making it cheaper to keep them cool in summer. The local environment also benefits through the capture of air pollution and stormwater runoff, as well as new habitat for birdlife. Trees can improve mental well-being by increasing people’s connection with nature. They also benefit community health by encouraging people to get outside and be more active. Raise Waste-Related requests at The Waste Spot
Penrith City Council is inviting residents to jump online and head to The Waste Spot, the digital platform dedicated to supporting residents to raise waste requests and provide feedback to Council as quickly and easily as possible. The Waste Spot is a digital alternative to Council’s existing telephone customer support service and aims to give residents another opportunity to contact Council, while helping to ensure fast responses and efficient resolutions are achieved. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM praised the online destination as a ‘round the clock option residents can use to let Council know of their needs at a time convenient to them. “Innovative services like this are nothing short of what Penrith deserves and this is just the first step," Cr McKeown said. “This digital service will work alongside existing contact methods and will help make life easier for those who prefer to access services online. “Sustainability is one of Penrith City Council’s biggest priorities when it comes to providing our community with a high-quality and easy to use waste management service. “Over the years, we have pioneered best practice in Food Organics and Garden Organics (FOGO) initiatives which have contributed to Penrith leading the way when it comes to sustainable waste management. “Council takes great pride in providing a service that is easy to access and provides the solutions to our community’s queries or problems,” she said. Local Father Rises to Help Others They say that we rise by lifting others. For Ropes Crossing father Esau Taniela, it’s a mantra that he has used when taking part in a walk to raise funds for charity recently. Esau took part in the Black Dog Institute’s One Foot Forward charity fundraiser last month. The challenge involved walking 100kms locally, whilst raising valuable funds for mental health research. The twist in his challenge was that he committed to do the walk with one of his children on his shoulders. “I’ve been wanting to take part in fundraising for a long time, I just needed a cause to set my mind to. I saw this come up on my social media feed and thought about my own mental health struggles as a teenager and how lucky I was to have had support from my family and friends. They carried me when I needed it most, so I decided to commit to the walk but also carry one of my children on my shoulders to symbolise the strength everyone has inside to carry those around them” said Esau to the Jordan Springs Gazette. “I had a friend who I could have done more for back in Wellington, New Zealand. When he had passed, I promised myself I would do my best to carry anyone who needed it” he continued. Due to the pandemic and the recent lockdown LGA restrictions, Esau’s 100km journey took place around Ropes Crossing. He followed the nearby paths that surround the entire suburb to complete the trek. He set himself a goal of raising $500 for the charity walk. “I posted my journey on social media and have almost reached halfway. I regularly post updates about my journey to keep everyone updated on my progress” Esau explained. Esau is thankful for the support he has received in his quest. “I am grateful for the donations, no matter how small. Get outside and talk with those in your community. Some may not say much but may be struggling to hold things together inside. A smile and a quick “how’s it going?” can mean so much to someone. “Once I’ve completed my 100km goal, I also hope to look into volunteer work relating to families in desperate situations” he ended. Making the Community Safer Did you know that Ropes Crossing has its very own Neighbourhood Watch group? Ropes Crossing Neighbourhood Watch was formed in March 2019 and held its first public event in April, with Prue Car MP – Member for Londonderry in attendance. The local group currently has 10-13 very active members and around 65-70 members on a watch and report status. With lockdown over and restrictions easing, the group is preparing to re-establish its active role in the community. “We will inform and assist our residents via our website and Facebook site, which has a large following. We’ll also be continuing our letter box drop program of several different safety brochures and a themed newsletter. These provide important information and tips on how to prevent crime, and how to best report suspicious activity and crime events. “From time to time we’ll issue alerts on our sites. For example, there’s been several thefts from cars recently, even if most of them are opportunistic theft by doors being unlocked or valuable items like passports etc. in plain sight. We’d advise residents to make sure their car doors are locked, and valuables removed from sight and from the car” said Mitch Keyes, President of Ropes Crossing Neighbourhood Watch. “We will also have a new crime trail treasure hunt working behind the scenes to get it going” he added. Mitch believes it’s important to have groups like these as they benefit many in the community. “Ropes Crossing Neighbourhood Watch has helped our community reduce crime and criminal behaviour, though it is an on-going issue for most suburbs across Sydney. Groups like these help residents become more vigilant, they encourage people to report crimes, and they help the community to be safer and feel safer. Local Area Command Police also benefits from all the extra eyes and ears they have in these groups when it comes to detailing and reporting crime” Mitch reported. Now that lockdown is over and school is back, the morning rush has begun. The struggle of getting the kids out of bed and ready for school is real. Then, of course, there’s the lunches to make! Local Mum Alison Sciberras has started Lunch Box Kidz to help ease this pain. Lunch Box Kidz began in June this year. The small business is a service for busy, caring parents or guardians who want to give their kids the very best lunchbox for every day of the week. “I used to be a Childcare Cook for over 10 years. As a mother, I know the challenges of making lunches on the run every day” said Alison Scibberas, Owner of Lunch Box Kidz. “I wanted to create a service that would help parents. Something that would give kids the opportunity to eat the same healthy food that I eat. Food that is nutritious, well balanced and home-made” she continued. Lunch Box Kidz has a website where lunches can be ordered for delivery. There are three menus, consisting of Standard ($10/ Day), Premium ($13/Day) and Gourmet ($17/Day). Each lunch box contains 4 food items and 1 drink, ideal for recess, lunch, and an afternoon snack. When ordering online, customers can choose lunches for 2 days, 3 days and 1 week. Local Business Wins Bronze at International Competition Jordan Springs small business Spot On Cakes have had an amazing result at an international competition, winning a Bronze Award at the 2021 Cake Champions Awards recently. Owner Swati Sharma claimed third place in the Wedding Cakes in Bloom Category, with her ‘Spring Garden’ cake. “I was ecstatic to have received the bronze award. My work being noticed and recognised alongside the great artists is enormous for me” exclaimed Swati. “The category I chose to enter was Wedding Cakes in Bloom. This category combined wedding cake design with contemporary techniques and an assortment of sugar flowers. Judging was based on general appearance, use of colours, original creativity and clever adaptation of an idea, difficulty of techniques, neatness and precision” she added. Lockdown restrictions have limited competitions and Swati saw this as the perfect opportunity to enter the online event. “Cake Champions is a competition open to cake designers all over the world. It’s an annual event that creates an opportunity for cake designers to showcase their talent and creativity as an artist, adding to their growth. It’s a virtual event to celebrate the talent of cake artists around the world. “There were no criteria to enter the competition. It was open to everybody at any skill level whether it’s a home baker or a professional” Swati replied. Swati’s impressive result has inspired her to showcase her work in more competitions soon. “I intend to take part in more competitions in the future. Keeping Children Safe Online: What are they doing? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of COVID-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. This month, we conclude our three-part series on keeping children safe online. According to eSafety research, approximately 15% of children and 24% of teens admitted to behaving in a negative way with a peer online. When we consider children’s developing capacity to manage big emotions and impulses, as well as their growing interpersonal skills, this makes sense. Children need your guidance to develop respectful social behaviour both online and offline. Online communication can be difficult to navigate due to the often-faceless nature of it. It’s important to speak to your children about how this disconnection can make it feel like online actions and words are not as hurtful. However, we know that the adverse consequences on the mental health of someone being bullied online is not just equivalent to being bullied in person, but in some cases can be worse. We must encourage children to behave online just as they would in the real world. Drawing up a Family Technology Agreement is a great way to talk about the values that you share as a family. These agreements outline your expectations around the use of internet-enabled devices. Agreements can cover the amount of time spent online, the way your child is expected to behave online, and what your child will do if they feel worried or upset about something they see online. Navigating the online world successfully requires a certain level of maturity, discernment, knowledge, and skill; it is not simply about reaching a certain age. Therefore parents must play a proactive role in supporting their children’s online behaviour from the first turn using the iPad to their first personal mobile phone, and beyond. Rock Swap Boxes Create Happiness Local rock painting group Happiness Rocks have created a new initiative for the community, that is bound to get more families involved in the activities. A special ‘rock swap’ box can now be found in Jordan Springs, enabling members to swap their painted rocks with others. “The Happiness Rocks swap is a small box containing lots of beautiful painted rocks for you to come and swap with one of your own masterpieces or a rock that you have found whist out hunting. “The rock swap box was an idea discussed by one of our lovely members in our Facebook group. After finding just the right box and painting it, we stocked it full of beautiful rocks on Saturday 9th October” said Nic McIntyre of Happiness Rocks. The rock swap project is a great way to get more members involved with the activity. An unsuccessful hunt now means that budding artists can swap their rocks with other members at a location. In just a short amount of time, the community have already welcomed the initiative. “The community have been wonderful; we have had lots of visits with some absolutely beautiful rocks swapped for others to admire and make their own swaps with. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting many of our rock friends, it’s so lovely to finally be able to see the faces behind the artwork” she explained. The popularity of rock painting boomed during the lockdown restrictions. Happiness Rocks has expanded to over 3,200 members and doesn’t look like slowing down. “Watching Happiness Rocks grow has been nothing short of mind blowing! I can’t believe how large the group has become, so quickly. I am so grateful that the community has embraced us and joined in with such love and enthusiasm. I am in awe of the talent that has emerged and am blessed to have an incredible team helping me to keep things running smoothly. Our first 5 months have been incredible, I cannot wait to see what comes next” Nic reflected. There are plans to expand the rock swap points to two locations in Jordan Springs as well as a larger box in Glenmore Park. Panther Fans Hold Their Heads High
With the Penrith Panthers crowned the 2021 NRL Premiers, the local community has been alive with proud fans showing their support far and wide. Team colours and displays adorn houses showing their Panther Pride. The drawcard to the displays has been the Penrith Panthers Player Heads. The Heads have been very popular amongst fans, including children and are made by local resident Enzo Montana of Montana Signs. Montana Signs are sponsors of the Penrith Panthers. They have been responsible for the signage at BlueBet Stadium this season. “We have sold over 3,000 Penrith Panthers Player Heads to supporters this year. With 13 players to choose from, which was the main first grade team, the three most popular amongst fans have been Nathan Cleary, Jarome Luai and Brian To’o. We have also sold Panthers Team Shots and Logo Cut-Outs as well as Stickers” explained Enzo to the Jordan Springs Gazette. The idea for the Penrith Panthers Player Heads came from a Panthers representative. They have been embraced by fans, firstly at BlueBet Stadium and then at supporter’s homes and workplaces during lockdown. “Panther’s supporters are loyal and proud. Our goal when making the Penrith Panthers Player Heads was to help create an atmosphere at home games. It was a way to lift the players when they came out and took to the field. “Kids, in particular, love the Player Heads. Seeing the smiles on their faces is worth it” he said. Enzo has been a Penrith Panthers supporter himself for over a decade. “I have a personal relationship with the club. When they won the Grand Final, I was proud of everyone, from the players to the staff. It was an amazing achievement” Enzo stated. “I wish to send a shout out to Jake Fenech, Darren Micallef, Joe Dunn, Jeremy Tuite, Jade Chalker-Keene, Tasha Fordham and the Sponsorship/Marketing Team this season. “Most of all, a big thank you to my wife Asude and my children Allegra, Aletta, Nino and Ava. Migraine Auras – What Their Strange Features Tell Us About Migraines? 38% of migraine sufferers experience auras. Not all migraines involve auras, only 20% do. When present, auras last about 30 minutes; a migraine usually follows within 10 minutes. 20% of auras don’t become a migraine. Over 50 aura-symptoms have been described. Visual auras are by far the most frequent, although weakness, dizziness, numbness/ tingling, and speech difficulties, are common. Studies show migraines result from damage to local brain cells. This causes altered function of the brain-region involved. If damage is severe enough, we perceive it consciously and aura results. The damaged brain cells also release a host of biochemicals, and if damage is sufficient biochemicals, are released to turn on local pain sensors (nociceptors) which results in us experiencing the pain we know as the migraine headache. So how are brain cells damaged? The brain is the most energy hungry organ in the body. It requires 10 times more oxygen than the rest of the body (Clarke & Sokoloff 1999). The brain is exquisitely sensitive to anything that hampers energy production including lack of oxygen and when brain cells can’t make enough energy, they are easily damaged. In the damaged, some neurons stop working (i.e., stop producing their normal electrical signals). In migraine, the area within which damage happens spreads like a wave across the cortical surface of the brain, involving ever more brain cells. This phenomenon is called a cortical spreading depression (CSD) The type of aura we get depends upon the region in which damage occurs. The area of the brain which controls vision is at the back of the head. It is known as Brodmann’s area 17. The visual cortex has the highest neuronal density of any brain region and the lowest relative density of supporting cells called astrocytes that protect brain cells from CSD. It is the brain region most sensitive to energy deprivation and thus migraine-auras are mostly visual because in most people the brain-cell-damage that initiates a CSD occurs in the vulnerable visual cortex. The simple reason migraine-auras are varied is that symptoms depend upon the brain region in which damage and CSD starts-and on where the damage wave travels to.

Certainly, the unfolding effects of a world pandemic has given rise to new situations both personal, community and national. Outcomes and effects will be felt for many years to come. Thus, a new spectrum has been added to the diseases and ailments that humanity will live with. But that living will not be negative. Research and innovation will continue and in many instances success as in the past will be recorded in the medical and social environment. More importantly, however, is the ongoing belief by many in Jesus the Christ. Why? Because his life and work and in particular his death gives a new dimension to our attitude and involvement in daily living. We are encouraged to give over our thoughts, our hopes, our action to what God in Christ expects of us. What basically is that expectation? It can be summed up in two words: honesty and trust. Honesty in that, in the first instance, we examine ourselves and be not afraid to recognise our weakness and guilt in given situations. Alongside of this is to utilize the particular strengths found within ourselves. In doing so, contribution is made to the wellbeing of ourselves and the community at large. Charity is the development of this contribution when our potential is recognized and in honesty applied to life and interaction in given situations. Trust: surely while trusting in ourselves there is recognition that self-pride on the one hand is positive while on the other it can be negative. It is here the acceptance that life is sacred and drawing its motivation from the execution of Jesus, comes the recognition that all things are with God: heaven can be seen as a place but greater still recognizing that it is a state of being: what a challenge: let go- let God.

Providing an exciting opportunity to meet with fellow retirees and join in stimulating activities, the Jordan Springs Probus Club services Jordan Springs, and surrounding suburbs. The club was formed in March 2018 and joins the fray with over 1,700 clubs with more than 125,000 members all over Australia and New Zealand. With an exciting program of events, you will get to hear interesting guest speakers, attend monthly meetings, take part in a wide range of pursuits, travel locally or around the world, enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme, have access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance plans, develop new interests and stay active. The club currently has a regular lunch at a local venue on the second Tuesday of each month, a monthly outing, and special events such as Christmas in July. Officer charged – North West Metropolitan Region An officer has appeared in court charged with traffic and judicial offences. About 3.30pm (Friday 1 October 2021), officers from Professional Standards Command, assisted by Nepean Police Area Command, attended a home at Jordan Springs when they stopped a vehicle nearby after it was seen driving away. Police spoke to the driver, a 42-year-old male sergeant – who is attached to a command in the North West Metropolitan Region – before he was arrested. He was subjected to a random breath test, returning a positive result before being taken to Riverstone Police Station, where a breath analysis returned an alleged reading of 0.162. The man was charged with drive with high range PCA and breach of bail. He was refused bail to appear at Parramatta Bail Court (Saturday 2 October 2021).
