Alysha Selected For AIS Training Camp Local athlete Alysha Pearson has been selected to attend the Little Athletics Under 15 Training Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra. The prestigious camp is for those athletes in the Under 14’s that finish in the top three at the State Championships who are selected. Alysha’s selection comes on the back of her gold medal and first placing in Shot Put at the State Championships in March, earlier this year. The Training Camp at the Australian Institute of Sport is designed to provide coaching from some of Australia’s best High Performance coaches with active participation from athletes. Whilst there, they will work on their general fitness, attend workshops on strength and conditioning, nutrition and meet with senior elite athletes. The Jamison Little Athletics Centre athlete set herself three goals this year and has already achieved two! Alysha’s first goal was to throw 13 metres in shot put and she achieved that last month at the CIS Athletics Carnival with a throw of 13.03 metres. Her other goals are to throw 40 metres in discus and to throw 45 metres in the hammer throw. Alysha’s sporting idol is Dani Samuels, the Australian athlete who recently competed in discus at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Alysha hopes to one day follow in her footsteps. Llandilo Public School Celebration Not to be Missed! As many would know, this year marks the 150th Birthday for Llandilo Public School. Celebrations are set to take place at the school on Sunday 23rd October from 10:00am to 3:00pm. There will be lots of fun for the family with the Show ‘n’ Shine Car Show, BBQ, rides, petting zoo, face painting, stalls, live entertainment, an art exhibition and much more. The little country school began its humble beginnings in 1866, when a slab building housed one class with one teacher, Mr George Browne. In a time when Llandilo was totally bush and scrub, the school operated with nothing more than a few books and stationary. “For Llandilo, as a community, it will be a celebration of friendship. Students past or present have a great sense of pride from the education they have received there and the friends that they have made. The birthday celebrations will be a great day sure to be enjoyed by all said Carmen Sultana, Event Organiser.

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday

Two prayers have come down through the centuries; the Agnus Dei [“Lamb of God have mercy”] and the affirmation during the consecration of bread and wine in the communion service [ Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again], each giving recognition of the culmination in the long history of Semitic religion of the concept of ‘sacrifice’ It was the custom to kill a lamb as a sacrifice at the paschal period in each year with the conviction that in doing so the sin of the nation and people would be wiped away and a fresh start would be in place for the coming year. When the Christian looks back to the execution of Jesus, the Christ, and contemplates on the life and work of Jesus, what is seen is God himself, giving of himself to abolish the reality of sin. Jesus was the final paschal Lamb to be offered and when the individual and society at large seek the common good and turn from all that depreciates life, then the fullness of the meaning of God’s will is comprehended and expressed. Sadly history tells a different story. Hell is more often expressed than Heaven. Is not Heaven that which cannot be explained but is an eternal hope in each generation. Is not Hell that which no one wishes to experience. In the plurality of religious thought and practice heaven is a common denominator. For the Christian it is not a reward but rather the working against in all honesty that which depreciates or destroys the reality of life with the particular emphasis on a person who gives the challenge “who do you say I am?”

In giving answer it provides the realization that all creation, all time and history, all the particular of each individual is caught up into eternity within the new creation when we recognize Jesus as God with us. To enter the story of Jesus is to begin to share in his identity, he who died and is risen, and to enter into and share the reality of salvation [to be made whole]. Rev John Hebblewhite

Arrr, Me Hearties, It’s The Pirates Of The Curry Bean! the perfect opportunity to show their drama skills and express themselves. Cleo, who played Pearl Periwinkle, participated in her third school musical in as many years. “My character Pearl changed her emotions so quickly. My role was challenging, but a lot of fun” she said. For Brock, the opportunity to play the bad guy was too good to refuse.” Captain Redbeard was different to your average bad guy because he was also really funny. I love singing and performing and Redbeard did quite a bit” said Brock. The Federal Member for Lindsay, Emma Husar MP, was also in attendance to watch the fantastic performance that left the packed audience in the School Hall wanting more. “The commitment and hard work from the St Joseph’s students to bring the production together was exceptional. They should all be proud of themselves” said Mrs Patricia Carr, Relieving Principal of St Joseph’s Primary School.  The Cast of Pirates of the Curry Bean | Image Supplied

St Joseph’s Primary School students came together late last month to present and bring to life the swashbuckling musical ‘Pirates of the Curry Bean’. The play was directed by Mr Tim Martin and had a massive cast of one hundred students from Kindergarten right through to Year Six. Pirates of the Curry Bean centred around twins Jack and Liza Periwinkle, who find a real life treasure map, only to have it stolen by the infamous Captain Redbeard and his pirate crew! The twins then join a mad admiral and his crazy crew on a voyage and the adventure begins. “Both the students and the teachers absolutely loved this production of Pirates of the Curry Bean. As the Director, I loved seeing the shy and often quiet students burst into life with confidence and shine” said Mr Tim Martin, the musical’s director. For local students Cleo Brennen and Brock Rodziewicz, it was

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps… Guest Article by Professor Matt Sanders It’s tough being a parent but it’s easy to fall into one of the common parenting traps. The criticism trap is when there are frequent power struggles with your child. The situations escalate from criticising to threatening and yelling. This type of discipline often backfires. The parent’s anger makes the child and parent resentful and hostile. If these kinds of battles take place frequently, its time to try a new way of handling the situation. The “leave them alone” trap involves the parent simply not acknowledging their child when they are behaving well. If good behaviour is taken for granted it may be replaced with the misbehaviour that receives more attention. A basic principle of positive parenting is to praise behaviours you would like to see more often. The “for the sake of the children” trap occurs when parents in unhappy marriages stick doggedly to the same marriage routines, for the sake of the children, rather than addressing the problems constructively. The perfect parent trap. There is no such thing as a perfect parent and trying to be one will only lead to disappointment, resentment, guilt, and feelings of inadequacy. The martyr trap is one where parents become so overinvolved in the task of parenting they neglect their own needs. The parents’ relationship suffers and may end in feelings of dissatisfaction and resentment. Quality parenting can only happen when adults have their own lives in balance. Parenting is sometimes hard work and it may take time to tackle difficult problems. The good news is that help is always at hand. In Penrith, parenting support is offered for free with Triple P, one of the world’s most highly-regarded parenting programs. Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. For more information go to www.triplepparenting.net or http://www.resourcingparents.nsw.gov.au/.

SPGS RFS Brigade Cadets Defend Title in 2016 as Best in NSW

St Paul’s Grammar School’s Cadet Rural Fire Brigade spent four days in mud, floods and fierce competition at Narrabri last month - defending their title as Junior State Champions at the 2016 NSW RFS State Championships. The six Cadets competed in several events over four days, taking out the Spot Fire, Head to Head, Fireground Fundamentals, Keepit Full Junior events, and placing third in Junior Sheep Run and Junior Remote Response. The challenging weather conditions did nothing to diminish the unit’s unwavering determination; as a team they have trained hard over the past months, with support and guidance from their coach, coordinator and manager. Their fine performance at Narrabri showcases the scope of benefits gained by being

a Cadet: resourcefulness, leadership, fitness and community service, to name a few. The St Paul’s Cadets spoke highly of their fellow competitors, enjoying friendly rivalry and camaraderie, amongst the 12 teams of Junior Cadets who made it to the finals, including 12 from Brigades across the state. St Paul’s Cadet Captain Sam Keogh stated: “The experience that we gain from the Championship is what matters - the development of our firefighting, the leadership and team work skills will carry not only onto the fire ground but into the future also.” St Paul’s Grammar School’s Cadets | Image Supplied

SAFETY AWARD WINNERS!

As a business with Swim Safety at its core, we are thrilled to share that Nepean Aquatic Centre and Eva Bory’s Swim School were the proud recipients of the Australian Swim Schools Associations National Excellence Award in the category of SAFER Swimming last month! The awards were held in Queensland and attended by swim school operators from all around Australia and overseas, plus swimming personalities including Laurie Lawrence and 4 times Olympic gold medallist Libby Trickett OAM,who presented our award. The SAFER Swimming award recognised both schools mission to spreading our safety message throughout the local community, through a combination of quality swimming lessons and education. Terry Spinks, Operations Manager at both swim schools said “To us as a business, safety is not an add on - we include education regarding safety as an aspect of everything we do, from the learn to swim lesson, to our staff training and required qualifications, in our venues procedures, by offering CPR courses, and in our messaging to our customers and the community about the importance of learning to swim and staying active”. Mr Spinks added “Safety is, essentially, the reason we do what we do and what our businesses are based on - teaching children to swim”. Director of the business, Alan Bentley added “As a business, our greatest hope is to work together as an industry to see the drowning statistics reduced to zero – we believe nothing above this should be tolerated in our society— and this informs and motivates everything we do within our swim centres. This award recognises every member of staff in our centres working towards this common goal”. So what does this mean for you and for your child? Overall it means that you can be sure that you are receiving the best possible swim instruction and safety education right here in your local area, helping to make your child safer around water. With summer on its way, this is incredibly important. And remember, as every year, both swim schools will be participating in this year’s annual SwimSAFER Week, 21st to 27th November 2016. Image Supplied | Robyn Ellery, Alan Bentley, Laurie Lawrence, Julie Fletcher, Terry Spinks.

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT........ LLANDILO PUBLIC SCHOOL?

Llandilo Shines on Stage at the Sydney Opera House

For the last few years, a highlight of our school’s performing arts program has been participating in the NSW Festival of Instrumental Music at the Sydney Opera House. Once again I was given the pleasure of experiencing Llandilo on show. A group of our students, lead by Mrs Warren, played in the massed recorder ensemble. This prestigious event features musicians, ensembles, orchestras and bands from K – 12 students all over NSW public schools. Not only were we treated to the splendour of the combined recorders and strings, but I also particularly enjoyed the strings from Sydney Girls’ High, as well as an 8 year old violin virtuoso. Our little group were chosen after auditioning via youtube. Students in Years 4 – 6 had a challenging repertoire to learn using descant and treble recorders. The resulting sound was a far cry from my memories of learning recorder in Primary School and an absolute credit to the students involved. It’s wonderful to see such incredible young talent on stage at a world renowned venue.

Councillor John Thain Elected Mayor In a year heralding significant economic growth and change Penrith Council last month elected unopposed both Councillor John Thain as Mayor of Penrith and Councillor Tricia Hitchen as Deputy Mayor. Councillors congratulated Cr Thain and Cr Hitchen and spoke of bipartisan solidarity with doing what needed to get done to ensure Penrith grows in a sustainable and positive manner. “It is more important than ever that Council works strongly together to mark and enhance our destiny as the New West - a strong regional city servicing greater Western Sydney,” Councillor Thain said. “I look forward to working closely with Cr Hitchen as Deputy Mayor, we have much work to do and I know we will both be busy with the responsibilities we have accepted. Teams always achieve more than any individual can and Cr Hitchen and I will be a mayoral team. “I thank all Councillors for their support. Cr Hitchen and I are simply first among equals and I believe all Councillors will play a big part in this Council achieving significant milestones for the City.

“Government commitment to improvements to infrastructure and fast growing investment in Penrith has positioned our city as an important service and commercial hub. “This boom in government and private investment will see tens of thousands of new jobs created. These are exciting times. “Our plans for the Nepean River, redevelopment of St Marys and Penrith town centres and thriving tourism market all point to a successful and vibrant future. Councillor Thain also congratulated the new Councillors Kath Presdee, Aaron Duke, Ben Price, Todd Carney and Joshua Hoole as well as returning Councillors. “We have a good blend of experience and fresh eyes to work on the great deal we have achieved over the past four years with the outgoing Council,” he said. Deputy Mayor Tricia Hitchen said it was important that Council remained focused on what this era of change meant for residents and what could be achieved for the people of Penrith. “This is a great city, we are poised to see significant economic growth, we need to ensure that this growth is managed well and we deliver for the people of Penrith. I am pleased to serve as Deputy Mayor and I look forward to a constructive and successful term,” Councillor Hitchen said.  Deputy Mayor Cr Tricia Hitchen and Mayor Cr John Thain | Image Supplied

The time has come for your little ones to bring out there inner demons, dress up in their favourite ghoul costume and get sugar crazy with trick or treating and every year sees more and more participants coming together and getting into the spirit of this fun and crazy tradition. We celebrate Halloween every year on October 31st but do we really know where this originated from? According to History. com the holiday originally comes from people called the Celts. The Celts lived in Europe more than 2000 years ago. On November 1st they celebrated the end of summer. They thought ghosts visited the living on October 31st. They dressed up like ghosts so the spirits would not harm them. Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. On Halloween, to keep ghosts away from their houses, people would place bowls of food outside their homes to appease the ghosts and prevent them from attempting to enter. Whether you are attending a local event to celebrate, having a party at home or with family and friends or simply taking your kid’s out for some trick or treating there are some great tips and idea’s on things you can do to get you in the Halloween spirit, but most of all this is also a time to be diligent and practise safety for all involved. Be mindful and respectful that not all people in Australia have taken on this ever growing tradition, here are some tips to make it a fun, safe and enjoyable time for everyone.  For those at home celebrating, decorate your front door with a pumpkin or a lantern to show you are participating, this lets trick or treaters know they are welcome.  Teach kids to demonstrate manners when taking treats, and to only take wrapped lollies and enough for themselves.  Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colours and make sure it the right size to prevent trips and falls.  Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.  Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.  Slow down and be especially alert in residential neighbourhoods. Children are excited on Halloween and may move in unpredictable ways.  Popular trick or treat times are between 5.30pm – 9.30pm. To see if your suburb has registered to celebrate Halloween, add your suburb, get ideas on costumes and much more visit www.halloween-australia.com

What a Pain In The Neck! Have you ever woken up looking like the leaning tower of Pisa? Walking around doing your best “zoolander” impression to avoid turning left (or right)? Well you may have woken up with an acute wry-neck! If you’ve experienced this before you know there’s nothing cute about it. So what is it and why does it happen? • Acute wry-neck is the sudden onset of severe neck pain, it’s accompanied by muscle spasm, which limits movements in most directions but more so away from the painful side. You’ll find yourself tilted towards the side of the pain, as it will help to minimise the pain. • We aren’t sure exactly what causes the injury but there are numerous contributing factors. Your pillow or sleeping posture is usually a major culprit. Other times it’s a result of something that you may have done in the previous few days, increased time spent playing Pokémon Go? • Other contributing factors such as heavy lifting, increased time spent on a laptop or holding a phone between your shoulder and ear can all predispose you to waking up with an acute wry neck The good news is wry neck usually resolves quickly with correct diagnosis and tailored treatment. Manual therapy techniques such as gentle joint mobilisations combined with soft tissue techniques and specific home stretching programs are very effective in reducing the immediate pain and returning you back to your normal range of motion as quickly as possible. This article is by Jude Holroyd, the Principal Physiotherapist at The Healthy Body Company in Jordan Springs. Jude treats a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including acute wry-neck, and works in a team that includes other physios, dietitians, massage therapists and exercise physiologists. Best in Show! Settling into a new home is exciting as you start to explore the region and what is on offer. Our local areas are rich in opportunity, great parks, walks, shops, restaurants and only a short distance to fantastic entertainment. The Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre and Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest are two easily accessed destinations offering great activities and events for the entire family. The Joan showcases a variety of performances: fine music, opera, musical theatre and drama and even a Friday Night Lights pop up lounge bar - something for everyone! This month, Noni Hazlehurst features in Mother (7 – 8 October), a story tackling the issues of motherhood, poverty and isolation. Mother is a performance not to be missed, featuring one of our local region’s most loved performers. Make a night and come for a drink and a bite to eat beforehand at The Joan’s Friday Night Lights lounge bar. Young, old or somewhere in between - we all have memories of childhood and stories to tell. For most they are stories of happiness and a carefree childhood. Suitcase Stories are bittersweet real stories that will make you feel inspired - they may even make you realize how carefree and perfect your childhood was! Written and told by refugee children and teens who have overcome more in their young lives than most of us can possibly imagine. At the Gallery, on the banks of the Nepean River, is Gravity [and Wonder], a wonderful exhibition and program joining the dots between art and science. Grab a coffee at the Café and visit this free exhibition for a glimpse into our fascination with how gravity influences movement, the shape of space and the flow of time. Experience the wonder of the night skies and star gaze at Western Sydney University’s Penrith Observatory (8 October) and in the Gallery Garden (22 October). The Gallery also offers children’s workshops in drawing, animation and mixed media during school terms and a vibrant school holiday program. Come along to The Joan or The Gallery and be entertained - smile, cry, laugh out loud, sing along, toe tap, relax as music sweeps you away; or, be in awe as you gaze at gravity defying works and wonders! The Joan is offering a special discount price of $20 Standard and $15 Concession for the 28 October 7pm performance of Suitcase Stories. To claim the special price please follow the booking link online http://thejoan.com.au/whats-on/suitcase-stories and quote the discount code STORIES.

National Veterinary Nurse’s Day On Friday 14th October 2016 we plan to celebrate National Veterinary Nurse’s Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. It is great to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our veterinary nurses. The nurses do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital. Without the veterinary nurses, we would not be able to do our job as a veterinarian. We plan to celebrate by having a long lunch with enough food to feed an army. We have 7 nurses at the hospital with Sheridan recently on maternity leave, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital.

Renai Lewis – Practice Manager

Renai has grown up in the Penrith area and has seen many changes over the years. Renai joined the team in August 2014 where she was warmly welcomed by all. Renai has 2 furbabies including: Ally (Golden Labrador) and Cooper (a naughty young learning Labrador). Renai adores her pets and spends every spare minute with them, when she is not busy being a wife and mum to 4 adult children.

Kirsti Lane After 20 years of veterinary nursing, Kirsti went back to TAFE to update her qualifications. Kirsti graduated from Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV (again) in June 2016. Kirsti enjoyed the study and found that the basics had not changed, but technology had certainly advanced. Kirsti enjoys spending her time off with her daughter and husband (and her animals of course) camping, bushwalking and trying to keep fit! They have 3 dogs (Roxy, Rory and Crumbs), 2 cats (Ivory Grace and William Wallace), 3 fish, 2 birds and several hermit crabs!

Kristie Borg Kristie joined our team in April 2013. She has completed studies in certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing in 2011. Kristie is currently studying a Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (General Practice) through Crampton Consulting Group. Kristie's furry family includes: four dogs (including Myloh the Jack Russell, Pepi the Chihuahua and Reilly and Coco the Maltese Terriers), one medium haired cat named Missy, three birds (Mac, Peaches and Budgie), and four horses (Jordie, Lexie, Minnie and Bella). All of which she enjoys spending time with.

Rachel Kent Rachel graduated as a Veterinary Nurse in December 2012 at Richmond TAFE. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family when she is not at work. Rachel has a much loved Labrador Molly, and Jinx the cat. Rachel is currently studying the Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services at the Delta Institute, which is an animal behaviour and training course. Rachel began teaching the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in Dec 2015. Rachel is enjoying the study and

Stacey has 4 cats running around her feet, Sage (an elderly black cat), Mia (a feisty tortie), Bricky (named after being found on a construction site at just one week old and just couldn’t part with after hand rearing!) and Boots (one adorable and cuddly medium haired ginger kitty).

Lizzie Bunting Lizzie completed the Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in July 2016. Lizzie is currently studying the Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services at the Delta Institute, which is an animal behaviour and training course. Lizzie began teaching the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in Dec 2015. Lizzie is enjoying the study and the hands on experience with Puppy Preschool. Sticking Together After the Death of Your Child Every couple experiences problems in their relationship but grief, adds extra stress. In the early stages of grieving some common reactions can include: • Shock, anger, disbelief, overwhelming sadness, shutting down, staying in bed and not wanting to join in. • Guilt that they could have done something differently. • Fighting about anything and everything. • Wishing your child was with you. • Feeling lonely, even around people. • Difficulty talking to friends. People Grieve Differently: Some couples argue that their partner is not grieving the “right” way. Ideas For Couples To Reconnect • 20 minutes each day checking in with each other discussing how your day went. Being heard is important, you will feel connected in a way that you haven’t experienced before. Understanding and accepting how the other feels provides a foundation for building your ‘new life’ together after loss. • Keep your daily routine intact. Get out of bed, dress, have

breakfast, remember to breathe doing what needs to be done. • Don’t be afraid to ask for help. It is difficult seeing your partner consumed by guilt, but let them be. • Grief takes a toll on the body. Take care of your physical self. • Find things to do together to help with your grief. Research shows, yoga can help couples connect through body, mind and spirit. • Make time to do things you liked to do before. It’s okay to laugh and have fun. • Seek support from people other than your partner – each needs a break from each other’s grief. • Know days of celebration will trigger both of you in different ways. Plan how to deal with these days and what you need if you are triggered. Keep healthy, love each other and navigate your ‘new normal’ together. Cait’s passionate about helping people who’ve suffered loss. As a leading specialist in her field she’s helped people move through their grief, to feel less isolated and alone. Cait offers grief, loss and bereavement counselling for adults, adolescents, children and families in the Penrith CBD. Pop over to Cait’s website www.indigotherapies.com.au or phone on 0434 865 429.
