Mayor and Deputy Mayor Re-Elected Unopposed Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM, and Deputy Mayor Julie Griffiths have been re-elected unopposed to lead Blacktown City Council for the next 12 months leading up to the 2021 Local Government Elections. Local Government elections were due to be held last month, however the Minister for Local Government announced in March that the elections would be postponed for 12 months due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Under the Local Government Act, elections needed to be held for the office of Mayor and Deputy Mayor for the remaining 1-year term of Council. Councillor Bleasdale and Councillor Griffiths were elected Mayor and Deputy Mayor at an Extraordinary Council meeting last month. They will hold the positions until the September ’21 Local Government elections. “It is a great honour and privilege to have been elected by my fellow Councillors to continue in the office of Mayor of the City of Blacktown for the remaining 1-year term of Council” Mayor Bleasdale said. “Deputy Mayor Griffiths and I see our election as an endorsement of Council’s unified and responsible plans, policies and actions.
“While COVID-19 has resulted in considerable revenue loss for Council, we have the right policies and plans in place to ensure the health and financial wellbeing of our community. “We are a team committed to the transformative program that is establishing Blacktown as a city of talent, diversity and sustainable growth and development” Mayor Bleasdale said. Deputy Mayor Griffiths said, “It is an honour and privilege to serve the Blacktown City Community and I look forward to joining with Tony and my fellow Councillors in ensuring Blacktown City continues its journey of sustainable development while celebrating our diversity and multiculturalism”. Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM was first elected to Council in November 1996. He held the position of Deputy Mayor for 3 years and became Mayor of Blacktown City in October 2019 when then Mayor Stephen Bali MP stepped down from the position. Mayor Bleasdale was awarded the Order of Australia Medal (OAM) in 2010 for his service to the community as a supporter of charitable organisations and for his contribution to local government in the Blacktown City area. Deputy Mayor Griffiths was first elected to Council in 2008 and became Deputy Mayor in September 2019. She is a past President of the Australian Local Government Women’s Association (NSW) and a current member of the NSW Joint Ministerial Advisory Council. r Blacktown City Mayor Tony Bleasdale OAM and Deputy Mayor Julie Griffiths | Image/Article: Blacktown City Council
FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
The Holy Trinity: This is the teaching of the Christian in giving meaning to belief in God. God as such is a given but demonstrative proof is not possible, either to accept or reject existence. Hence, for the Christian it is an act of belief based on the life and work of Jesus the Christ as recorded in the New Testament. The early followers of the Faith had to delve into the paradoxes raised by the evidence that Jesus had stressed to them that he and the father were one. They had to consider the concept of one God being expressed and shown by the activity and work of Jesus and the function of the Spirit of God in their lives. Thus, evolved the traditional doctrine of the Holy Trinity being finally confirmed during the fifth century. While the New Testament is not a ‘textbook’, there is nothing in this confirmation by the Creed (known as the Nicean) which is not explicit or implicit in the New Testament. The Creed, which is prayed, stresses that knowledge of God is not based on philosophy but what is experienced within nature and the history of the world. Philosophy itself is the discipline used to find meaning beyond what the other sciences have discovered and theology (discourses on God) takes into consideration of these truths in meeting questions relating to belief in God. What the Creed does is set out the basics in attempting to explain how it is that God was in Jesus who we now worship as the Christ. The total ongoing process in understanding that Christ is the fulfilment of the evolution in this universe and mankind and indeed God with us. Hence, the affirmation of the Creed - “I believe in God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit”.

Jordan Springs Probus Club The Club was formed under the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. We welcome new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs. The Tuesday lunch for September was held at the Hogs Breath Cafe in Penrith. A group of 24 members gathered for an enjoyable lunch and general catch-up. The October lunch is planned for the Waterstone Restaurant at St Marys Leagues Club. Our regular monthly meetings recommenced in August, with Penrith Council having reopened community halls subject to some COVID requirements. The speaker for September was a podiatrist with an informative talk on general foot care. The committee continues to plan for the eventual lifting/ relaxing of restrictions and the return to a more normal monthly agenda. This ensures members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance, developing new interests and staying active. Future planned events for the coming twelve months will include Watsons Bay for lunch, Mudgee Getaway Cottages (4 nights), Bundeena Ferry and lunch, Camden Historic Tour (coach) and planning is continuing towards an interstate trip. The Jordan Springs Probus Club normally meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, 9:30 for a 10:00am start. Adult Acting Drop-In Classes for Ropes Crossing Are you an actor looking to sharpen your skills? A beginner looking to try acting and meet new people? There’s a new monthly improvisation drop-in class for adult actors (18+) in Ropes Crossing. Run by Centre Stage Performing Arts Academy, the class is taught by acclaimed drama coach, Wayne Tunks. Wayne has been teaching for close to twenty years in both Sydney and Melbourne and is currently teaching weekly classes all over Sydney for children and teenagers; including Tuesday classes at Centre Stage for children and early teens. Wayne is an award-winning theatre maker, filmmaker, writer, director, and actor. His web series, “After Nightfall” has won awards all over the world, especially in the US, with major wins in New York, New Jersey, Baltimore, and Utah. His feature film, “According to Otto” will be out in 2021, and he will shoot his next feature in January next year. Held on the first Tuesday of every month, these drop-in classes will be a fun way for Western Sydney actors to really hone their craft and work and meet other likeminded locals. Wayne will create a fun and creative class to really extend skill levels and provide loads of laughs. “As a working actor, I know how important it is to keep performance ready. Improvisation classes are the perfect way to really stay game fit for auditions and upcoming performances. During this difficult year, so many performers have missed out on work and are feeling deflated; my aim is to use these drop-in classes as a perfect way to build us all back up” said Tunks. The first class will begin at the beginning of Term 4 on Tuesday October 13, followed by the first Tuesday of every month. Classes are at the Ropes Crossing Community Hub from 7pm – 8.30pm and cost $20. Due to COVID restrictions, numbers are limited. Local Businesswoman Finalist in 2020 Altitude Awards
OCTOBER 24 9AM - 1PM
GARAGE SALE Local businesswoman and our resident education expert, Sara Drebber, is a finalist in the 2020 Altitude Awards for her second consecutive year. This time she is a finalist for the Revolutionary and Best Professional Service Business Categories. These categories are for outstanding service-based professional businesses and groundbreakers in their industry throughout their career, respectively. Sara is a passionate educator, consultant, writer, and mother of three, whose award-winning local business, edUcatered, has flourished under her guidance since its inception 3 years ago. With almost 20 years’ experience working in education, Sara brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to her role as an educational consultant and tutor. It has always been her aim to create a nurturing and supportive environment in which children can develop and learn, so the finalist awards are just a bonus to the joy of supporting learning of those using her service. “It is an honour to be included in both a business excellence and leadership category this year. I am grateful to have this opportunity to be recognised for my hard-work and that of my team, especially given the challenges we have faced this year with the pandemic” Sara explained. The Altitude Awards are jointly presented by Women with Altitude and The Men’s Altitude Network. They are held annually to provide an opportunity to acknowledge those who have made outstanding contributions as business owners, volunteers, employees, creative thinkers, and leaders. Women with Altitude founder, Andrea Turner-Boys said, “We look forward to this time each year when we celebrate and champion the achievements of individuals and teams from our regions. Each finalist has been chosen for their outstanding contributions in their field and will be presented with their finalist certificates at regional networking events across NSW and the ACT, throughout the month of September”. An independent judging panel adjudicates the awards, and winners of each category will be announced at a gala awards ball on Saturday 7th November at the LCC Event Centre in Prestons NSW. r

PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/
All Feelings are OK
Some parents tell their children that strong emotions such as anger, frustration, and excitement are unacceptable. Strong emotions are OK. They are normal and all of us will feel them at some time in the day or week. Strong emotions are quite motivating and energising. Think about how much can get done when people get angry (for example, Vincent Lingiari, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela). So, all feelings are OK, but it is what we do with our emotions that matters. It is not OK to hurt someone else’s feelings or physically hurt others when we are angry. It is also not OK to blame someone else for how we feel, for example “you make me feel angry”. You are having the emotion and taking responsible for how you feel gives you the power to change it. Blame is a dead-end street – it stops you from feeling that you can take the initiative to make changes. The components of emotional regulation include (for children aged over 4 years): • Acknowledging where you are at – Feel it to heal it. • Labelling your feelings – Name it to tame it. • Doing something to calm down – Deep breathing, counting backwards, telling yourself to ‘calm down’, thinking happy thoughts. • When you are calm, understanding what was going on for you. When the child is calm and ready to talk, calmly discuss the behaviours you observed and what was said. Ask the child what might have sparked the outburst. What was s/he feeling? Google ‘feelings chart’ and ‘anger iceberg’ for some cool visuals. And finally, what could the child do better next time when s/ he is having big feelings? All disruptions are opportunities for repair and learning. Parenting is an opportunity to coach a child in ways that make them better humans. As parents, we also have to role model the skills we want our children to learn, so emotional regulation starts with us. r

The Jordan Springs Netball Club have wrapped up their fourth season in the Penrith District Netball Association (PDNA) Competition and it has proven to be another successful year for the popular local club. Despite the setbacks this year due to the current pandemic, 2020 has seen significant growth in the club. They fielded 25 teams, consisting of 228 players ranging from 6 years to Ladies. This was an increase of 10 new teams this season, compared to 15 teams that played last year. The 2020 season was reduced to 10 competition rounds, with teams finishing 1st and 2nd playing in the Grand Final. The club has 5 teams guaranteed to play in the Grand Final, which is due to take place in late September. “Starting and then playing the entire season was a big highlight for the club and our sport. I honestly did not think that we would make it to the end. Our Under 11 Jack Rabbits team have gone through the entire season undefeated, which is a great effort. Getting 3 umpires district badged, and 1 receiving her national badge was also a wonderful achievement” said Michelle Barnes, President of Jordan Springs Netball Club. Michelle and the Jordan Springs Netball Club Committee are thankful for the support of their coaches, umpires, parents, and spectators from the community who helped with a challenging year. “The season has been very draining on the entire Executive Committee. With added restrictions and procedures, it has taken a huge effort to firstly get us playing, and then to keep us playing. We couldn’t have done it without the assistance of our teams of coaches and umpires. A big thank you also to our parents and spectators who abided by the 1 spectator per player rule. It was a tough year but seeing the girls and ladies out there on the courts doing what they love was worth all of the effort!” praised Michelle. “A massive shout out also needs to go to the Executive Committees of PDNA and all of the other clubs in the Association who have given a lot of their time to ensure that the competition went ahead” she ended. r Jordan Springs Netball Club players at the 2019 March Past | Image Supplied by Jordan Springs Netball Club

Betty and Victor Celebrate 66 Years of Marriage Jordan Springs residents Betty and Victor Coleman have reached an amazing milestone, celebrating their 66th Wedding Anniversary recently. Betty who is 86, and Victor, 88 were married at St John’s Catholic Church in Riverstone in 1954. The inspirational couple have two children, Peter, and Debra, as well as 8 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren. “Victor and I met at the School Tuckshop in Riverstone, which my Mother and Father used to own. I was 13 and Victor was 15 and he used to come in the shop to buy milkshakes. I wasn’t allowed to go out until I was 16. We had our first date then at the Sydney Royal Easter Show” explained Betty to the Jordan Springs Gazette. The Coleman’s were unable to celebrate their wedding anniversary with family and friends this year and were in lockdown, due to COVID in April. However, they were surprised by their kindhearted friend Charmaine who made them dinner and dessert to mark the momentous occasion. “The secret to a long and successful marriage is love. If you love that person and they love you back, you are truly blessed. We contribute a lot to being Christians. God has looked after us and we are grateful for this life” said Betty and Victor. Their once favourite hobbies of swimming at Manly Beach, travelling overseas and around Australia have been replaced by reading for Victor and gardening for Betty. “Life is much slower for us now, but we loved to travel in our younger years. Victor was always a hard worker. He worked for 17 years without a day off when he was at the abattoir at Homebush” reflected Betty. When asked what they enjoy most about living in the local community (they moved to Jordan Springs 6 years ago), Betty and Victor both replied that it’s their neighbours that make it a special place. “All our neighbours are amazing. Gail has been coming around to check up on us during COVID. This includes making some delicious handmade sweets for us. Terry and Anna regularly check up on our welfare too. Tracy and Ian assisted when I had my fall in 2018 and they helped Victor when he was in shock. Claudia and Marko are also great. We are the oldest residents in the street and it honestly is wonderful having caring neighbours” smiled Betty. “We have both lived a very exciting life and could not ask for more” ended Betty and Victor. r Feature Article: [Cover+Above] Betty and Victor Coleman on their wedding day in 1954 [Top] The Coleman’s at home this year | Images Supplied

Get Started
RSPCA Cupcake Day
1.Prepare Grab your apron and preheat those ovens – Cupcake Day is returning this October, with the official day Monday 26th October. Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus crisis, we will not be hosting a Cupcake Day this year. So sad! We will have to eat all of the cupcakes ourselves!! We have a fundraiser page on the RSPCA website for online donations. We will match all donations that we receive!! So bake away and donate to the RSPCA.
https://www.rspcacupcakeday.com. au/fundraise/fundraisers/profile/view/ orchardhillsvet Share some of your photos on our Facebook page of your baking successes, masterpieces and failures!!! This year, thousands more furry faces, waggy tails and feathered wings need your baking skills more than ever. With safety precautions still in mind, we’d love you to return for a socially safe, physically distanced or virtually vibrant Cupcake Day to remember. Whether you’re whipping up doughnuts, lamingtons, brownies or traditional cupcakes, the funds you raise at your Cupcake Day event help rescue, rehabilitate and rehome animals in need all over the country. Invite your workmates, schoolmates and regular mates along for a sweet-tastic time. With a pinch of community and a cup of good conversation, your Cupcake Day event has the potential to bake real change! If you can’t host your Cupcake Day in person there’s no ‘knead’ to worry – get your workplace crew together online to share a cupcake (or two), to help raise much-needed funds to fight animal cruelty.
Monday 26th October
You can use Skype, Zoom, Facetime or Messenger to host your Cupcake Day online. Share your fundraising page to everyone joining and ask guests to donate what they would have contributed to your physical Cupcake Day event.
2. Plan
Decide what your online event looks like. Will it be a virtual bake-off, a knock, drop and dash in exchange for a donation – take baking orders from your friends, family or work colleagues and deliver them straight to their doorstep! You could even host an online baking quiz, Masterchef trivia anyone?
3. Party
Party up with your friends and family over a virtual cuppa, enjoy your favourite sweet and savoury treats and share your favourite recipes with your guests. Play some virtual games and fundraise from home. Don’t forget to hang up your bunting and most importantly tell everyone about all the animals they’re helping! The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work. Go to the RSPCA website for more information, https://www.rspcacupcakeday.com.au/ Donate to our RSPCA fundraiser page: https://www. rspcacupcakeday.com.au/fundraise/fundraisers/ profile/view/orchardhillsvet For more information check out our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027. I’m not going to lie, I’m very excited about the sunshine and the beautiful Spring days we’ve been enjoying of late. Despite our cautious ‘covid’ ways - it’s refreshing to see people out and about enjoying the sunshine, supporting local businesses while adhering to safe guidelines and recommendations. Like many, I’ve spent a few days in the garden - while not a ‘green’ thumb there’s something to be said about a neat and inviting garden, especially at this time of the year. I could sit in the garden, eyes closed listening to nature and it’s surrounds for hours. It’s a great way to ‘reset’ and ‘refocus’. And so is reading this latest edition of ‘Your Community News’. We have plenty of light reading this month, why not find yourself a nice spot in the garden with a cuppa and your favourite local paper! ‘Yesterday is heavy, learn to put it down’. Enjoy Your Community News.
