As we enter October, and the start of yet another school term it’s clear the year is flying by! Dare I remind you that Christmas is less than 100 days away? If you’re anything like me, you would agree that it only felt like yesterday when we were enjoying time with friends and family during the Festive season of 2013 and welcoming in 2014. What an amazing community we live in. Congratulations to all the ‘Bunnies’ supporters. What a win! Our cover story features an amazing competition, to WIN a cruise from your local shopping centre! Having just returned from a cruise myself, this is one competition NOT to be missed! You can also check out the special deals currently on offer in our COLOUR LIFT OUT on page 12. FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday and 8am on the Fourth Sunday

Christology is the technical term used for the study of the life of Jesus who became the centre of worship as being the Christ. The Christ stems from ancient thought and relates the person in total to God. So when asked what is so important about Jesus and why is trust leading to faith placed in him as the Christ it is possible that the following reflections assist to confirm that importance. Reflection one: Jesus was a Palestinian Jew who lived in Galilee. This was a far flung province within the Roman Empire. It is interesting to note in the Scriptural record of his life and work that he stood apart from the religious practice in Judaism. He played no part in the religious political establishment. He placed no stress on being a stern moralist nor a strict ascetic. His life and work is better seen as being a critical catalyst in everyday life. Reflection two: In comparing Jesus to say Moses, Buddha, Muhammad or even Confucius his teaching is direct: “I say to you”. As such it really has no parallel in religious teaching. Moses appealed to the Law, Buddha to monastic rules, Muhammad to world conquest while Confucius appealed to morality and ethics. Jesus was certain of who he was and in turn challenges people to answer the question “Who do you say I am” Reflection three: Jesus challenges response simply because

what he taught is not to be separated from his life- unconditional forgiveness, unconditional love and a total giving of himself in death. Reflection four: In history miracles and unexplained events are common and as such those recorded about Jesus are not necessarily unique. What is ‘miraculous’ is that his life, death and resurrection has a vital significance. He was not a founder of a religion, although in history many Christians attempt this. He simply proclaimed and lived the reality of God. Reflection five: In the study of the life and work of Jesus the fact of his death and more importantly his resurrection and ascension, gives firm foundations for not only the individual, but society itself, nationally and internationally. As growth “in Christ’ progresses with the essential hope of death and resurrection that completes life in itself , it is the constant meditation and application in everyday life of what was revealed in his life and death that is the ongoing appeal. Now these reflections in themselves are open to debate. Indeed in no way do they exhaust avenues for understanding Jesus. But none the less they can be considered a base from which to work. One difficulty is that often reflection begins from the individual’s own perspective or position on religion. This is overcome when reflection is based on what the life and death of Jesus teaches us. To ‘grow in Christ’ is the continual response. Rev John Hebblewhite

Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis

All Classes of Mechanical Repairs Pink Slips: Petrol, Gas

Ever thought about having a Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis done? Hair Tissue Mineral Analysis is a non-invasive health screening tool for measuring your body’s mineral status. The data can highlight potential health problems and help you to treat them through a nutritional program designed to meet your individual needs. A hair mineral analysis is a safe, non-invasive pathology test which can give you valuable health information often not revealed in a blood or urine test. It is an excellent way of identifying potential nutrient mineral deficiencies and excesses as well as being an indicator of toxic mineral exposure. Mineral imbalances can have several causes - improper eating habits, stress, medications, pollution, genetic and individual factors and even nutritional supplements. Mineral imbalances can also be the underlying cause of many illnesses, as can toxic metal exposure. They can cause arthritis, elevated blood pressure, foggy thinking, behavioural problems, hormonal imbalances, skin problems and hair loss, just to mention a few. It is suitable for people of all ages, and may just be the missing link you have been searching for. When combined with a blood or urine test, it can give a very comprehensive evaluation of your overall health. Talk to your natural therapist at your next visit to determine whether a HTMA might be beneficial for you.

Cumberland Rural Fire Service Receives NSW Government Grant NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services Stuart Ayres MP and Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies yesterday officially presented Cumberland Zone Rural Fire Service (RFS) with a cheque for $20,000 to go towards the purchase of 41 new ground radios. Cumberland RFS has 16 Brigades and over 1000 fire fighters and support personnel covering the western Sydney region. “The NSW Government has distributed Emergency Services Grants totalling $127,000 to recipients across the state, with Cumberland Zone receiving $20,000” said Minister Ayres “This funding reinforces the NSW Government’s commitment to supporting rural fire fighting volunteers” Tanya Davies said. “We are very grateful for the State Government’s funding support. These radios will come in very handy in the upcoming fire prone summer season” said Superintendent Richard Petch of the Cumberland Zone RFS. ‘The NSW Government is committed to ensuring the RFS is well-equipped for the bushfire season,’ said Minister Ayres. ‘RFS volunteers in the Cumberland zone, and across NSW, perform invaluable work in protecting our homes and our families, and we endeavour to assist them in every way possible.’ said Minister Ayres. ‘These radios will enhance the efficiency of RFS operations in what is already proving to be a tough bushfire season.’ said Minister Ayres. ‘As we approach the summer season, I urge property owners to take action now to prepare. Please visit www.rfs.nsw.gov.au for helpful information on what action residents can take now to get prepared, as well as how to stay informed about fires that may occur within the local community’ Tanya Davies said.

From the Principal’s Desk...Llandilo Public School Life has been so busy at Llandilo Public School! Over the past few weeks our students have been involved in sports carnivals, backyard rugby league, the Royce Simmons shield, swim school and the Blue Mountains Performing Arts Festival. Let’s not forget our own school programs. No wonder everyone is ready for a holiday! During week 6 our staff and students dressed up as their favourite book character to celebrate Book Week. The children looked wonderful in their costumes and it was lovely to see the pre-schoolers involved too. As always, there was great support from the parents and community members. What a fantastic event this turned out to be! Recently our school introduced a `social skills program’, designed to provide a helping hand to some students in order to develop and maintain positive relationships. We are also in the process of setting up a gardening club, to assist in this area. The `vegie patch’ will complement our `crunch and sip’ program. Our aim is for students to learn how to work together and communicate in a respectful, positive manner, whilst developing additional knowledge and skills along the way. The Penrith District Athletics Carnival finally took place in week 7 and many of our students did their personal best on the day, despite cold and blustery conditions. Five students namely Zoe Parnell, Isabella Pelle, Paige Manning, Jacinta Fabar and Kaylie Tibbey all competed in their respective events at the Regional Carnival. Well done to everyone involved. During week 8 we celebrated Literacy and Numeracy Day, where all K-6 students worked together in groups and participated in a multitude of learning activities that centred around literacy and numeracy. I was amazed at the enthusiasm of the students who were collaborating, critically thinking and communicating with each other, as they solved problems and worked mathematically.

The teachers planned fun, educational lessons that ‘challenged the minds’. It was a great day for all concerned. Our Pyjama Day was also held in week 8. Students were allowed to wear their pyjamas to school – just for fun – and no-one was late for school as they didn’t have to spend time getting dressed! The P & C provided cups of hot chocolate and the students certainly enjoyed their day ‘out of uniform’. The whole school community have been working very hard raising funds to update the school’s technological resources. We have ordered a multitude of iPads and made arrangements for the Wi-Fi throughout the school to be updated. Simultaneously we will install up to date technological equipment in the hall. This is a very exciting time for our school and our students. Soon they will be utilising up to date technology that will enable them to function successfully in the 21st Century. Four Simple Steps To Staying Safer This Season Tips To Help Your Family Family B ecome S wim S eason R eady Your Become Swim Season Ready ‘Is your family swim season ready? ’If the answer is less than ‘yes’, the consequences could be dire. “Aussies simply love the water. Yet sadly, accidental childhood drowning claims the greatest number of young lives than any other trauma, said Keryn Daley, from Dive In Swim Academy, in Penrith. In 2012/2013, 40 children between the ages of zero and 14, drowned in Australian waterways. But not all accidents prove fatal; one quarter of children admitted to hospital following a non-fatal drowning, will be left with a brain injury resulting in lifelong disabilities. However, industry experts, Swim Australia - the leaders in learn-to-swim and water safety - insist, drowning can potentially be prevented, by actively applying four simple steps: the EnergyAustralia SwimSAFER ‘Layers of Protection’. “Applied together, each layer helps supports the other. If one layer fails, the remaining active layers will ultimately kick in, potentially helping to save that child’s life, said Swim Australia CEO, Ross Gage.

1. Be Aware: Don’t let the kids out of your sight. 2. Be Secure: Keep fences and gates locked up tight. 3. Be Confident: Learn to Swim, and how to get to safety. 4. Be Prepared: Always have a plan in case of emergency. “Help prevent drowning any time, any where, any season by enrolling your kids in year round swimming lessons, never let them out of your sight when in or around water, and always practice the house rules: ‘I never go swimming without an adult, concluded, Ms Daley.

Do you Have a Child who has Difficulty Calming Him or Herself? One of my boys would get very angry at times and needed some support to calm himself. I was concerned that if he didn’t learn the skills to calm himself, he would think that anger was an appropriate means of expressing himself. I didn’t want him taking his anger into adolescence and beyond. The following strategies are from the Second Step programme which I have taught in primary school. In the programme, children are told that they should do some deep breathing in situations where they find they are having strong feelings, such as being overexcited, angry, or upset. We tell kids that it’s ok to have strong feelings, but doing the first thing that comes into your head (like hitting or screaming at the other person) will not solve the problem. When we have strong feelings it can be hard to think about what to do. Calming down helps us to think again. It’s easier to calm down if we try as soon as we start to have a strong feeling. You can use ways to calm down in the classroom, at home, and in the playground. It also helps to get children to identify where they feel their anger (for example, tummy, head, hands). Support the child to locate where he or she feels the feeling (anger, sadness, distress, overexcited, etc) in his or her body. The answers I have heard from kids range from the feet (to run), the fists (to get ready to fight), the heart, the tummy, and the head. This one is for young children, up to 6 years of age. Put your hand on your tummy to check out how you are feeling, and l. Say “calm down” to yourself, using a slow voice 2. Take three deep belly breaths 3. Count to 4 slowly Your tummy is right where your belly button is. Putting your hand there helps you check in with how you’re feeling. It also makes sure you do the right kind of breathing to help calm down. The wrong way to do belly breathing is to puff up your chest, tense your muscles, take a noisy gasp of air, and hold your breath. The right way to do belly breathing, is to take a breath that makes your tummy move out when you breathe in, and in when you breathe out. Breathe in slowly through your nose and out through your mouth. It should be so quiet that you can’t hear it. It’s a good technique for parents to use as well! Many parents reported that their young children in the programme would coach them to do these things when they were showing signs of getting angry. Next month I’ll give you the techniques for children older than 6 years of age.

The very first experience that kids have with the wonderful world of radio is based on whatever their parents listen to. We all have childhood memories of Saturday afternoon football, talk back, radio cereals and golden oldies. Today however kids are exposed to so much more including bad language, offensive songs and content, too much advertising and talk. The Target Radio Network is about to change how kids interact with radio forever. ForKidz.com.au is here. From the Wiggles to Hi5, Play School to old fashion favourites like Bananas in Pyjamas and the best of Disney, For Kidz Radio will play the music kids love. What’s more it’s direct to you by way of the world wide web, along with a smart phone and tablet app. Which is ready to be downloaded through the app store or google play. Making it available anywhere, anytime and for parents, giving you control of what your children listen to and when they tune in. Available at www.targetradionetwork.com.au, Google Play or The App Store.

What’s Happening at ........................ Henry Fulton Public School ? Henry Fulton Public School enjoys its strong ties with our families and community. This was very evident on Saturday the 23rd of August when the Henry Fulton P&C held their annual Bunnings BBQ. The day was a huge success. A special thank you to our community whose generosity in donating items and helping out on the day meant for the first time, the P&C didn’t need to purchase anything for the day. Our District Athletics were finally held after being washed out several times. We had many athletes make it through to regional level with our star runner Malakie making it through to the State Championships for the 100m. Over the past two weeks our four dance troupes have been in action. This time they have been strutting their stuff at the Joan Sutherland Centre as part of The Nepean Blue Mountains Dance Festival. As always we were the highlight of the festival but then again I may just be a bit biased... Last week our children were thoroughly entertained by a performance of ‘Crossing The Blue Mountains’. The play went for almost an hour and it was greatly enjoyed by all. We also held our school Walkathon which had the theme “My Favourite Book Character”. It proved to be a successful fun day for all. As you can see Henry Fulton Public School is a busy, active school that provides opportunity for all our students in many different areas. Principal: Glen Fairclough

With Cait Wotherspoon at Indigo Counselling & Psychotherapy www.indigotherapies.com.au P: 0434 865 429 E: cait@indigotherapies.com.au

7 Don’ts When Someone has Died 1. Don’t say things they say in the movies - Like; “Everything happens for a reason”; what possible reason could there be for a child dying? “He’s gone to a better place”, Better than in the arms of a loved one? “It was God’s will”, what god would take a person from their loved ones? 2. Don’t try to fix it, you can’t. Your friend needs to go through their own grief to be able to work out how they will live their lives now. 3. Don’t say, “If you need anything just call”. They don’t know what they need, they’re numb and in a state of shock. Look for what needs doing and help with that. It may be help with the ironing, dinner, and other everyday things. 4. Don’t say, “You’ll get over it with time” or “Time heals everything”. They’re in a fragile state and don’t need to be forced to feel or do anything they don’t want to. Each person’s experience of grief is unique. 5. Don’t say, “I know how you feel”. You have experienced your grief, it isn’t the same feeling as your friend’s grief. 6. Don’t think you can hurt them any more than they are already, by saying their loved ones name. Speaking their name helps things feel real. 7. Don’t avoid your friend. They need you, even if you don’t say anything, just listen. Remember everyone’s grief is unique. Your relationships may change through grief but in the end your ongoing support and friendship will be appreciated.

If you admire someone for making a difference to the Penrith community, then give them the recognition they deserve and nominate them for a 2015 Australia Day Award. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said Penrith City Council’s annual Australia Day Awards are the perfect occasion to honour the everyday heroes whose outstanding contributions might otherwise go unrecognised. “These awards allow Council to showcase Penrith residents as model Australians and highlight their stories and efforts to help others,” he said. To receive this prestigious honour, winners demonstrate excellence in their field and are considered inspirational role models for the community. The Australia Day Awards will highlight excellence across categories including: Citizen of the Year, Young citizen of the Year (16-25 years), Sportsperson of the Year and Local Appreciation Awards (for community service). All nominees are considered for the Penrith Citizen of the Year Award and Penrith’s Local Hero Award. Visit penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/ausday and send us your nomination before 14 November 2014.

TALKING HEALTH and FITNESS with MERINDA HUSKING designerbody P: 0421 773 984 E: designerbody@live.com W: designerbody.com.au

Spring is finally here, the sun is out, the days are getting longer and its time to pull out the summer dresses, singlets and shorts. If the thought of bearing a little skin makes you a little nervous then read on!! Follow these 5 steps over the next 30 days to have you feeling confident and ready for the warmer months ahead! 1. Go Bread Free: Going bread-free for 30 days is such a simple way to accelerate fat loss. Just think of all the extra carbs and calories that you’ll be saving yourself from. And it’s not so bad, once you get used to it. Wrap sandwiches and burgers in lettuce or on top of a pile of greens. 2. Workout 5x’s Each Week: Take the next 30 days to really focus your efforts on training. Train as if you were preparing yourself for an athletic event, with the mindset that each and every workout is important in seeing you through your goal. 3. Go Sugar Free: Sugar is the biggest thing holding you back when it comes to dropping fat and getting lean. And not just refined sugar. I’m talking about all sugars. Take the next 30 days to cut out all sweeteners and limit your intake of sweet fruits. This will be hard at first, especially if you have a sweet tooth, but the rapid change in your body is a fantastic incentive to keep going. 4. Focus on Protein and Veggies: Enough about all the things you can’t eat, let’s talk about what you can eat. Your meals should be a variety of protein and veggies. For protein stick with organic, hormone-free meat that has been roasted, baked or grilled. For veggies, avoid starchy veggies like potatoes, and instead stick with an assortment of colourful, fibre-filled veggies. 5. Commit to be Fit: The quickest way to get your body into tip-top shape is to join one of our fitness programs. I’m here to get you into the best shape of your life, with my proven, effective training programs and food plans. Make the commitment now, and together we can make the body of your dreams a reality. Remember, the next 30 days are going to pass whether you jump on board with our fitness plan or not. So call or email now so we can get started!! Merinda, Designer Body

PAWS A WHILE With Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills Ph: 4736 2027

Growth of the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital Since purchasing the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital 4.5 years ago, Camille and the team have worked steadily to grow the business. Starting off with 1 veterinarian and 4 nurses, Camille now employs 3 veterinarians (with a current advertisement for a 4th veterinarian), 6 fully qualified veterinary nurses, a Practice Manager, 2 trainee veterinary nurses and a kennel hand. Massive growth in 4.5 years from 5 staff to 13 staff! One of the unexpected bonuses of owning a business was creating 8 new local jobs! Each new team member provides a new skill set and knowledge base which we use to provide better care for your pets. New Practice Manager – Renai Renai has grown up in the Penrith area and has seen many changes over the years. After managing a local business for 12 years, Renai was delighted to combine her three greatest passions together: managing a business, customer service and her love for animals. Renai joined the team in August 2014 where she was warmly welcomed by all. Renai has 3 furbabies including: Tasha (Labrador x Staffy), Ally (Golden Labrador) and Cooper (a naughty young learning Labrador). Renai adores her pets and spends every spare minute with them, when she is not busy being a wife and mum to 4 adult children. Renai enjoys nothing more than spending time with her family, cooking, renovating and roadtrips. “I feel very fortunate to be a part of the team here at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. New Trainee Veterinary Nurse – Lizzie Lizzie completed work experience at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in June 2012. Lizzie then joined our team as a Kennel Hand

in June 2013. Lizzie is in the process of completing her Certificate II in Animal Science at TAFE, as well as her Higher School Certificate. She enjoys everything about being a Kennel Hand, learning lots and getting a head start on some nurse duties, as she wishes to go on to study Veterinary Nursing at TAFE. Lizzie has had many animals during her life time, at the moment she has two cats (Moo Cow and Missy), and a Labrador cross (Sonny). “After a week of work experience, I never thought only a year later would I be working here at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, but I wouldn’t work anywhere else! Everyone here is always willing to help out and share their knowledge where ever possible. Lizzie was promoted to Trainee Veterinary Nurse in September 2014. New Trainee Veterinary Nurse – Jemma As a lifelong animal lover, Veterinary Nursing was an obvious career choice for Jemma, who joined the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in September 2014. Having completed the Certificate II in Animal Studies in 2013, Jemma is currently completing her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing at Richmond TAFE. Growing up on acreage, Jemma was surrounded by many dogs and horses, and was involved in the local Pony Club. Jemma continues to enjoy spending time with her 5 beautiful dogs, along with horseriding, cooking and spending time with family and friends. Jemma is grateful for the opportunity to work with the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and looks forward to increasing her skills in all areas of veterinary nursing. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.
