New Business for Warragamba

The people and community of Warragamba now have a new business in town, with LiquorMaster @ Warragamba opening in February. The newly renovated shop is owned by local resident David Logozzo, with Symone Richardson the Business Manager and three other staff members. Since taking over the business in February, there have been many changes to various areas of the business. They have increased their product range as it is vital to the success of a business to meet the customer’s needs and preferences. For the first month of the business being under new management, they were continuously asking customers what they like and what they don’t like, giving customers what they desire. They also made some cosmetic changes to the shop, which has received an overwhelmingly positive response from the local community, customers, industry people and passers-by. They wanted to give their customers a well presented, inviting and fresh shop to walk into with easy access to all of their products and most importantly making the shop functional. In order to do this, they replaced the entire front wall of the shop, rearranged the existing stock in the fridges and cool room and added lower-lined shelving to make your shopping experience

pleasant, easier and more accommodating. The local community can now look forward to competitive pricing, increased product ranging, gift lines, specialty lines, local sporting and community group support and affiliation, cross promotions with local businesses and friendly staff. Local owner David Logozzo has been working in liquor retail for over 20 years, running Kemps Creek LiquorMaster, a highly successful liquor store specialising in premium and hard to find whiskeys. From 2009 to 2016, David was also a director of Australia’s largest Independent Liquor Co-operative, servicing over 1400 independently owned Liquor stores in New South Wales and Queensland. David is currently the National Sales Manager for ASM Liquor who own, produce and sell Vodka O, the 3rd largest selling vodka in Australia. “I have been a part of the Warragamba community since 1999. The town has so much rich history and stories to tell. It’s friendly and accommodating to all those who pass through and those who choose to stay. I chose to raise my family here because of the sense of belonging you receive from the community and the willingness that everybody here has to help others; from your next door neighbour to the local public school, charity events and local businessesâ€? said owner David. “The staff at LiquorMaster @ Warragamba would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to the local community for all of your support during the changeover of the shop, continuous feedback and your local business. Without our community we would not have a chance. Please come down and check out the changes to the store, new products and meet our friendly staff. We look forward to seeing youâ€? said business manager Symone. LiquorMaster @ Warragamba are located at 1/1Weir Road in Warragamba. ď ˛ A vast array of products now available at LiquorMaster @ Warragamba Image Supplied

Hope at Easter What is Easter? A holiday? A few days off? A time for chocolate and hot cross buns? These are good things, although perhaps not too much chocolate! Yet, it is sad that many people sometimes miss the key truth that is central to Easter. Easter is centred on the historical events surrounding the death and resurrection of Jesus. But why do we remember, even celebrate the death of someone? There are two important reasons. Firstly, Jesus’ death is no ordinary death. The Bible declares that Jesus died in our place, in the place of you and me, to deal with the consequences of the fact that none of treats God as we should. This is big, but none of us gives God the place in our lives that he deserves. Yet, the Bible declares that because of God’s great love for us, because of God’s desire to have friendship with us, Jesus came into our world to give his life so that we could have this eternal friendship with God. Secondly, Jesus didn’t stay dead! This is even bigger! While on Good Friday we remember Jesus’ death for us, on Easter Sunday, we celebrate Jesus rising from the dead. Jesus’ resurrection from the dead authenticates who Jesus is. But, Jesus’ rising from the dead also guarantees that any person who trusts in Jesus, committing their life to him, will also rise from the dead and have eternal life with God!

WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Pastor’s Corner This April we celebrate Easter. My brother once asked me: Why do you celebrate Easter? He went on to say, after all isn’t it about the death of the person you follow, Jesus? From a human perspective the death of someone does bring mixed feelings, grief, pain and sometimes feeling abandoned, now that a loved one is gone. The death of Jesus over two thousand years ago is quite different. On Good Friday we remember that Jesus died; a crown of thorns forced onto Jesus’ head; the nails that pierced his hands; the mocking of the crowd and the soldiers; the sign above him ‘This is the King of the Jews’; the sword that pierced his side; they cast lots for His clothes, Jesus was treated as the worst of criminals. Jesus’ life did not finish on that cross, because his life was resurrected, and he appeared before many of his followers, here on earth, before he ascended into heaven. So to answer my brother’s question, we celebrate on Easter Monday, because Jesus Christ came to earth to die for the forgiveness of our sins; that includes all the past, present and future sins; but not just for those of us, who call ourselves Christians, but for all mankind. It was to give us a new life and a new hope, found only through faith in Jesus. As a child growing up, Easter was about chocolate eggs, Hot Cross buns and the Easter show. Now, as an adult I still enjoy the chocolate eggs, hot cross buns and I occasionally manage to go to the Easter show; but the real significance of Easter has changed my life. John 3:16-17 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his

one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. This Easter, my prayer is that you will take time to understand God’s love for you; Happy Easter. God Bless, Lyndon

Warragamba ANZAC Day Service This year, Warragamba will be hosting the ANZAC Day March and Service on Tuesday 25th April at 11:00am at the Memorial Park in Warragamba. Anyone wishing to march will meet at the Warragamba/Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre at 10:30am, to march to the Cenotaph in the centre of town. There will be road closures along Fourteenth Street in Warragamba from 10:30am until approximately midday. Each year, their service is getting larger and larger, as they endeavour to have something different and of interest to the local community. On the Centenary of ANZAC, they had the biplanes fly over and when everyone was asked to look to the sky, a C120 Hercules flew over as well. They have had the submarine diving klaxon sound the warning of three blasts for ‘dive, dive, dive’, being the last sound that many sailors heard before their deaths. They have the baton that was made from a handle of a stretcher that was used in Afghanistan and is being sent around the world to symbolise peace. Warragamba was the first place in Australia to carry the baton. It has also been carried by Prince Harry and Barack Obama in the past. As they have looked at the army, airforce and navy in the past and their contribution to our freedom, they are looking at the roles of our own Aboriginal people and the parts they played in the wars. “One of the Aboriginal people who were a diver when Warragamba Dam was being built was Harry Huddleston. Harry lifted the flag from the Memorial at the opening of the Warragamba Dam in 1960. Prior to arriving from Darwin, he was a diver in the Gulf of Carpentaria, placing the mines so that Japanese submarines would have difficulty coming into the Gulf to land in Australia. When he came to the area, he was housed in the Rectory at Mulgoa. All his family was born in the area, going to local schools. One of his sons ‘Bobbie’ was a prize boxer. Harry returned to Darwin, was a Minister there and has since passed away” said Elaine Bonning, Warragamba and District ANZAC Committee member.

Warragamba ANZAC Day Service Tuesday 25th April, 2017 11:00am Memorial M Park, Warragamba The 14th Annual Charity Jazz Night Is Back The 14th Annual Charity Jazz Night, featuring the Mulgoa Idol contest, will take place this year on Saturday, the 13th of May from 7:00pm at Twin Creeks Golf Club in Luddenham. The evening will be raising funds for Vatu Health, a charity supporting health care on the Coral Coast in Fiji. Previous participants in Mulgoa Idol have included magicians, trick cyclists, yodelling, didgeridoo playing and singing – all in good spirit! The Mulgoa Road Jazz Band will be providing its unique Dixieland style music, which includes Jazz legends Mike Hallam on the trumpet and clarinettist Jack Wiard. Twin Creeks Golf Club is located on Luddenham Road in Luddenham.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Feelings All feelings are OK. Some parents tell their children that strong emotions such as anger, frustration, excitement are unacceptable. Even strong emotions are OK. They are normal and all of us will feel them at some time in the day or week. Strong emotions are quite motivating and energising. Think about how much can get done when people get angry about injustice (for example, Vincent Lingiari, Martin Luther King, Rosa Parks, Nelson Mandela). So, all feelings are OK, but it is what we do with our emotions that matters. It is not OK to hurt someone else’s feelings or physically hurt others when we are angry. It is also not OK to blame someone else for how we feel, for example “you make me feel angry”. You are having the emotion and taking responsibility for how you feel gives you the power to change it. Blame is a dead end street – it stops you from feeling that you can take the initiative to make changes. So what else do kids need to know about feelings? • You feel feelings in your body. • You can tell how someone else is feeling by looking at their facial expression and body language, hearing what they say, watching what they do, and looking at the situation. You can also ask them how they feel. • Different people can have different feelings about the same thing. This can sometimes cause conflict, but it is important to understand that not everyone will think and feel the same as you. Even the best of friends will disagree. • You can have two different feelings about the same situation. For example, you may be excited about moving to a new school, but worried too. • Your feelings about something can change over time. This happens because over time you gain more knowledge, understanding, experience, and maturity. • To understand others’ behaviour, you have to understand their perspective. Our thoughts, feelings, and actions are linked. If we are thinking negative thoughts, it will lead to feeling sad, angry, or frustrated. These strong negative emotions will affect what we do, our actions. When we learn to understand the nature of our feelings, we gain a greater understanding of ourselves and others. 2017 Back to Warragamba Reunion Day Another Huge Success The 8th Back to Warragamba Reunion Day was held last month at the Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club, with more than 120 guests in attendance for the momentous occasion. The annual event also had more than 50 new faces this year, many of whom had travelled interstate and had not been seen since their Warragamba school days in the 1950’s. A special thanks to Warragamba Public School for lending the event the old school memorabilia, which proved to be the highlight of the day, with all the familiar names in the ‘misdemeanour books’ of great interest. “We started the day with morning tea with the usual homemade cakes provided by the wonderful local ladies and gentlemen. Our thanks to you all. The day progressed quickly with so many old friends to catch up with, historic photos were brought along which helped relive those special moments growing up in Warragamba. Many guests stayed on into the night, still celebrating” said Terry Frazer, Reunion Co-Ordinator. The 9th Back to Warragamba Reunion Day will be on again next year on Saturday 3rd March, 2018 at 11am at the Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club. “We would like to thank our many helpers on the day and to all the supporters of the function. Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club who were the sponsors, Warragamba Public School for the historic memorabilia, Warragamba/Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre for the loan of the tables, FM Radio Station 90.5 Happy Jack for the Monday morning promotions and all the local newspapers for promoting the event to the community. We’re looking forward to a big 2018 Reunion” finished Terry.

Community Engagement Begins For The All Inclusive Play Space In Warragamba

The Touched by Olivia Foundation, in partnership with Wollondilly Shire Council, have begun to engage with the Warragamba and Silverdale community about the All Inclusive Playground earmarked for Warragamba. Workshops were held for community organisations and stakeholders as well as students at Warragamba Primary School. Workshops formed part of the overall engagement strategy and participants were consulted on the overall design and choice of play equipment. The Touched by Olivia Foundation and Council are now

undertaking further consultation with the broader community through an online survey. Members of the community can submit their ideas and suggestions by visiting www. surveymonkey.com/r/livvisplacewarragamba. “Council anticipates that the Inclusive Play Space in Warragamba will become a recreation hub where kids can play and families can meet and interact. It will attract not just the locals, but also families from neighbouring towns,” said Ally Dench, Executive Director of Wollondilly Shire Council “Because of this we will be engaging with the community to get the mix of play equipment, usage of the space, parking and safety right. We want this to be an inclusive play space that goes above and beyond the expectations of those that will use it” The inclusive play space is supported by both State and Federal Governments with Angus Taylor MP, Member for Hume; Senator Fiona Nash, Minister for Regional Development and Jai Rowell MP, Member for Wollondilly pledging their support. Wollondilly Shire Council, the Touched by Olivia Foundation and corporate partnerships will fund the remainder of the project. Further information can be found on Council’s website in the Resident’s Services - Current Projects section, or by visiting the Touched By Olivia website.

Spoil Your Tastebuds at Luddenham Luddenham Burger Bar is already making a name for itself and fast proving to be one of the area’s most popular food businesses, after opening its doors over two years ago. The local eatery sells a variety of seafood, loaded fries, burgers, ice creams and family value meals for dinner and is open 7 days a week. Customers can’t seem to get enough of their Caesar fries and chicken burgers right now, “Our Caesar fries are very popular with grilled chicken breast, crispy bacon, egg and American cheddar; all melted on top of a bed of fries drizzled in Caesar sauce. We also have a delicious chicken crunch burger that is popular at the moment, with juicy extra crunch chicken, striped bacon, garlic aioli and American cheddar. And of course, all our burgers come with the option to be doubled (double beef or chicken) even though there are some seriously big single burgers” said Gemma-lee Mackie, owner of Luddenham Burger Bar. With the popularity of the humble burger at an all-time high, Gemma-lee explained why people everywhere are craving them, “Burger bars and burger trucks are quite popular at the moment as American street food and styles increasingly impact the foods we eat over here. This is why we pride ourselves on high quality and value for money, setting ourselves aside from the run of the mill takeaway store”. The item on the menu at Luddenham Burger Bar that has tongues wagging the most is their Caesar Salad Ice Cream. The ice cream is the result of a collaboration they did with Paper Street Ice Cream Company. They worked together to turn their Caesar burger into an ice cream flavour. “Our Caesar sauces have creamy, sweet flavours accompanied with candied bacon. We thought it would work and it has! Basically, it’s a Caesar cream ice cream with real chunks of candied bacon and brioche and it’s delicious. It takes a while for your mouth to comprehend what’s going on, but it’s surprisingly very tasty! We also have a new collaboration in the works. Stay tuned to see what new flavours we have up our sleeves. It has something to do with our own homemade recipe hot chilli sauce” Gemma-lee said. Luddenham Burger Bar is located at 10/2140 The Northern Road in Luddenham. Their phone number is 4773 3012. You can also find them on Facebook and Instagram.  Luddenham Burger Bar’s delicious burgers | Image: Isaac Martin

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Drug Induced Osteoporosis Many commonly prescribed medications contribute to significant bone loss and fractures, yet according to researchers at Oklahoma university, many physicians are unaware that ‘Drug-induced osteoporosis is a significant health problem. The problem is compounded because sicker & older people often take multiple medications, many of which induce bone loss. Just taking extra calcium and vitamin D won’t really counteract this drug-induced bone loss. It just ‘ain’t that simple’. Bone undergoes continual turnover, i.e. it is continually broken down and rebuilt anew. At any-one-time about 5% of your bone is undergoing this carefully coordinated process. The process involves many different cell types. It’s controlled by many sensitive cell-cell chemical signals, including nutrients from the diet. Medications can interfere with this process, leading to bone resorption. So, which drugs can harm bone density? Let’s take a look. Glucocorticoid medication e.g. prednisone taken longer term (>3 months, not necessarily consecutive), can lead to significant bone loss. As little as 3–10 mg prednisone is associated with fractures, with between 30–50% of patients developing these. Antacid drugs called proton pump inhibitors used to treat acid reflux, heart burn & ulcers, with longer term use (several years), especially at higher doses, reduce absorption of calcium (Osteoporosis Canada 2017c) and many other nutrients important for bone strength. This increases hip fracture risk in older adults. Aromatase inhibitors - breast cancer drugs, block estrogen production & significantly lower blood estrogen inducing bone loss, some studies showing increased risk of esp. vertebral & wrist fractures. Antiandrogen therapy for prostate cancer reduces bone

mineral density, more during the first year of therapy in men over 50, increasing fracture risk. Longer-term injectable Depo-Provera use for contraception, significant reduces bone mineral density, partially reversible on discontinuation. Excessive thyroid hormone replacement can also reduce bone mineral density and quality, & increase fractures. Anti-seizure medications TegretolÂŽ (carbamazepine) and DilantinÂŽ (phenytoin) lower vitamin D & calcium absorption leading to low bone density. Diuretics, for fluid retention and swelling caused by heart failure e.g. LasixÂŽ (furosemide), promote kidney calcium excretion & reduced hip bone density. Aluminium-containing antacids for heartburn can inhibit phosphate absorption & reduce bone density. In patients with reduced kidney function, aluminium can inhibit bone mineralization Antirejection/immuosuppressive therapy such as cyclosporine (NeoralÂŽ) and tacrolimus (PrografÂŽ) used after organ transplant can increase bone loss. Heparin a blood thinner - long-term use may reduce bone density. Some cancer chemotherapy drugs can cause ovarian failure in women & premature menopause, or testicular failure & low testosterone in men, both lead to bone loss. Others include glucocorticoid therapy further increasing bone loss. Antirejection drugs to prevent organ transplant rejection or autoimmune disorders are associated with bone loss and increased fracture risk, exact mechanisms not known. Ask your doctor about the bone-density implications of all your medications!!

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington

During March, one of the most talked about things was the rain, during the month Luddenham had just on 250mm of rain (a record for March), more than 150mm above the monthly average and 50mm more than the previous March record. The rain created lots of problems on our roads, this photo shows Park Road at the Showground with water across the road. Also during March a “One of a Kind School” was given the go-ahead for Luddenham, in a pioneering agreement between developer Celestino and the Catholic Education Diocese of Parramatta, that will deliver education opportunities across science, technology, engineering and mathematics for students from early learning through to post school. The ceremony was attended by Penrith Mayor Clr John Thain, The Hon. Gladys Berejiklian, Premier of NSW, NSW Minister for Education Rob Stokes, The Hon. Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa and Greater Sydney Commission Chief Commissioner Lucy Turnbull. Penrith Mayor Clr John Thain said: “The Sydney Science Park STEM School is an excellent example of the innovative and exciting opportunities we can expect from the Sydney Science Park. The STEM school will deliver students skills vital for future jobs whilst exposing them to industry experts, leading

companies and best practice. “The school is not only an asset for our young generation but one for our region in a time of unprecedented growth for Penrith.” Another First for Luddenham. In 2010 the Luddenham Public School celebrated it’s 150th Anniversary, members of the past and present Luddenham Community were invited to purchase a paver engraved with their name, which was laid outside the library. The Luddenham P&C would now like to obtain some feedback to see whether it is feasible to offer the purchase of pavers again. We would need at least 50 orders to go ahead with the offer. Each paver would cost $40 – $45 and can be engraved with up to 48 letters. If you are interested in having your name embedded in our school’s history in the paving outside the library please contact the school on 4773 4111. Good news for Luddenham ratepayers in Liverpool City Council currently on “pump out sewer systems”, LCIT Councillors Peter Harle and Karress Rhodes successfully moved an amendment to the Liverpool City Councils’ DCP (Development Control Plan) that could result in financial assistance to those residents unable to connect to the State owned and operated sewerage system. A report will come back to Council for consideration and implementation as soon as possible. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@ bigpond.com we all need to work together to get the best results for the new Luddenham.  Park Rd Flooded | Image Supplied

Welcome to April. And what a wet start it has been. From the scorching heat to flooded roads and causeways of late last month. The cooler weather has been a welcome relief, as has seeing the gardens and lawns replenished and nourished. A big 'shout-out' to all our service people, emergency services and volunteers; with their recent assistance to families across our community battling this extreme flooding. You all go the extra mile, thank you! With Easter around the corner, enjoy the opportunity to spend more time with those who mean the most; and less time with the chocolate! All good things in moderation. From us to you, 'Happy Easter'. "Just be real, it's not that complicated." For now, sit back with a cuppa in hand and enjoy your Community News.
