An Oasis of Hope, Faith and Love It has been a very busy and wonderful year for Mount Schoenstatt in Mulgoa, having been blessed with the “Holy Door of Mercy”, they saw many new visitors to the Shrine. Some new events were held, including the “24Hrs for the Lord”. The pray time held throughout the night and day was reflective and accompanied by beautiful music. The inaugural “Pilgrimage of Love and Mercy” was held last month drawing people from as far away as Wollongong. It was a time of reflection, using the Stations of the Cross from World Youth Day, in Poland, held earlier in the year. There was also a procession from the Valley to the Shrine which included five Stations of Mercy. They welcomed Bishop Vincent Long, the newly appointed Bishop of Parramatta to celebrate Holy Mass in front of the Shrine. Bishop Vincent referred to Mount Schoenstatt as “an oasis of hope, faith and love, a sanctuary for reflection, spirituality and communion”. The celebration concluded with lunch. Their final event will be an evening of Christmas Carols, in front of the Shrine on Saturday 17th December, commencing at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome to share this time of joy with the Sisters. Children are encouraged to come dressed as angels and shepherds. Please bring a blanket or chairs and some snacks if you wish. You are also most welcome to enjoy a picnic dinner, in the grounds, before the carols commence. Inclusive Play Space In Warragamba An inclusive play space is one step closer to a reality with a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed last month by Wollondilly Shire Council and the Touched by Olivia Foundation. A joint partnership between Wollondilly Shire Council and the Touched by Olivia Foundation, the inclusive play space is supported by the Federal Government with Angus Taylor MP, Member for Hume, and Senator Fiona Nash, Minister for Regional Development, pledging $350,000 towards the project cost. Wollondilly Shire Council, the Touched by Olivia Foundation and corporate partnerships will fund the remainder of the project. The inclusive play space will be designed following consultation with the community and will aim to have a variety of play equipment for active, passive, imaginative and social play. Elements to be considered include: • Accessible play equipment • Sensory items such as music, light, touch and texture • Entirely fenced play space • Access to appropriate amenities • Linkage to accessible car parking and • Equipment and pathways that can be accessed by prams, wheelchairs and walkers. The concept of developing an inclusive play space at Warragamba began in 2013 with Council establishing a community-led Steering Committee. This eventually led to a Council resolution on 17 October 2016 committing to ‘in principle’ support for a partnership with the Touched by Olivia Foundation. “Through this project we will establish a quality regional inclusive play space in Warragamba that caters for children of all abilities, promoting social inclusion and encouraging physical activity for improved community wellbeing.â€? said Mayor Judith Hannan. “Council is proud to be able to facilitate the delivery of an inclusive play space in Warragamba. The Warragamba town centre will be enhanced through the provision of an inclusive play space that will act as a local and regional drawcard for the area, increasing visitation and strengthening the local economyâ€? said Wollondilly Shire Council’s General Manager, Luke Johnson. For more information on this press release please contact the Senior Communications Officer on P: 4677 9644.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender | The Anglican Parish of Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am 1st and 3rd Sunday @ St Thomas’ Mulgoa | A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa 2nd, 4th and 5th Sunday @ St Paul’s Warragamba | A: 4 Weir Road Warragamba

Looking for Joy Will Christmas be special for you? For many of us, we celebrate Christmas, we enjoy the parties, the friends, the gifts, and although shopping may be frustrating, at the end, we can say, to some degree, yep, we did have a “Happy Christmas.” Yet, when Christmas has gone, has it changed us? Are we any different? A well-known Christmas carol you would’ve heard over the PA at shopping centres has the words “Joy to the world.” These words are based on the extraordinary announcement recorded for us in the Bible where an angel proclaimed to a gathering of very startled shepherds on that first Christmas; “I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been born to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Why is news of a Saviour such great joy? Here’s the thing. Recognise it or not, each of us needs rescue. You might ask; “Rescue from what?” The Bible’s truth is confronting, but true to our life experience. None of us has treated God as we should. All of us have wandered from Him, not giving Him the honour He deserves, leaving Him on the edge of our lives, if we include Him at all. The good news of great joy is that God, because of His love for us, sent Jesus into our world to rescue us, to bring us back home, to reconnect us with God.

At Christmas, we remember Jesus coming into our world to offer us forgiveness and hope. Jesus’ coming to take away our guilt and fear and give us peace, joy, and a confident future. These are magnificent, life transforming truths. This is the good news we at Mulgoa Anglican Church would love to celebrate with you at Christmas – joy to the world; a Saviour born, a rescuer has come. Your Saviour! Your rescuer! We’d love to see you at one or more of our special Christmas Services (see our ad below) and celebrate this news of great joy with you all! Want to find out more? Give me a call on 4733 1635. Fire Safety This Christmas Fire has a plan, you need one too. The recent bush fires at Cranebrook and Londonderry should serve as a reminder that if you live next to or near the bush or grass pads, that you need to be prepared and have a plan. By not having your home prepared and not having a plan you are potentially putting your family and yourself at risk of being injured or death and your home being destroyed. It’s a fact. If you and your home are well prepared, you stand a better chance of surviving a bush fire. By you taking the time to do four simple steps, you can help to protect your family and home. Step 1: Discuss What To Do If A Bush Fire Threatens Your Home • Many households find that having a discussion over dinner works best as everybody is together and focussed. Step 2: Prepare Your Home And Get It Ready For Bush Fire Season • There are simple things you can do around your home to prepare it for a bush fire, like keeping the grass low, having a cleared area around your home and keeping your gutters clean. Step 3: Know The Bush Fire Alert Levels • If there is a fire in your area, you will find its alert level on the NSW RFS website and in the ‘Fires Near Me’ app. You need to keep track of the alert level so you know what you should do. Step 4: Keep All The Bush Fire Information Numbers, Websites And The Smartphone App • In a bush fire, it’s important that you stay up to date on conditions in your area. You need to remember that there may be a time when there is not enough fire trucks to protect everyone’s home and you may need to defend your own family or home. You can go to the NSW Rural Fire Service website www.rfs.nsw. gov.au or www.myfireplan.com.au to get all the information needed to prepare for this bush fire season.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps… This month we wrap up the series on parent traps that we have been focussing on all year… Blame Is A Dead End Street. It stops us from looking clearly at a problem, and how we can change things so that our children (and ourselves) can learn new skills and behaviours. It is always better to try to solve a problem in a proactive way rather than being consequence-driven. Being proactive means thinking about what we need to teach our children and how we can teach them, with the aim of preventing the mistaken behaviour. Blame takes two forms: • Blaming The Child For How You Feel “You are making me angry.” Who owns your emotions? You do. Yes, your child may be doing something extremely cheeky, but your emotional response is your own. It’s no wonder that many children blame others for the problems they are experiencing. We role model it for them. Take responsibility for own thoughts, feelings, and actions. Most child behaviour does not require a light-speed reaction. You can take 20 to 30 seconds to take some deep breaths and centre yourself before your respond to your child’s behaviour. • Blaming yourself, and thinking that you are a bad parent. You cannot be a calm, patient, and consistent parent if you are stressed or depressed. Knowledge is power. These days, most parents don’t want to smack or yell at their children, but they don’t have any other strategies in their parenting toolbox. A parenting workshop or course, either in person or online, will provide additional tools to enable you to be a more positive parent. • Blaming Someone Else. If you blame someone else (partner, siblings, teacher) for your child’s behaviour, you may come to the conclusion that there is nothing you can do to change it. This can lead to frustration and may affect your relationship with other people and your child. There is no such thing as a perfect parent or a perfect child. Most of the training is on-the-job and all new skills and behaviours take time. When we have a positive attitude towards our parenting and the belief that we can make change, the whole family can benefit.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington During November, the Airport grew two steps closer with the Hon. Josh Frydenberg MP, Minister for the Environment and Energy, signing the environmental conditions on the 11th. The Minister added more than 40 environmental conditions, addressing environmental issues across biodiversity, noise and heritage. These must be adopted for the proposed development of the Western Sydney Airport to proceed. The recommended conditions have been informed by a thorough and rigorous review of the environmental impact statement and draft Airport Plan and a site visit and meetings with key local leaders to hear first-hand the issues important to the community. Extensive consultation was carried out during the development of the environmental impact statement, where there were around 5,000 submissions and 16 community information events across nine different council areas in Western Sydney. The Minister for the Environment and Energy then handed over to the Minister for Urban Infrastructure, who is now in a position to finalise the Airport Plan and authorise Stage 1 of the development. Then on the 23rd, the Hon. Paul Fletcher MP, Minister for Urban Infrastructure, announced that Infrastructure Australia have assessed the Western Sydney Airport business case, with a finding that a Western Sydney Airport would deliver net benefits to the Australian economy. The Minister has also indicated that during December he will sign the final determination and then it is no longer a Proposed Airport, it will be Western Sydney Airport and work can begin. The Hon. Angus Taylor MP, the Assistant Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation, and our Local Federal Member visited Luddenham on the 12th of November to hear our local concerns. Residents got the chance to express their opinions and thoughts and Angus was a good listener and took plenty of notes. Thanks Angus for taking time out of your weekend for us. Also at the time of going to print, the RMS have told me that they have selected the M12 route and are just waiting for sign offs. It is expected to be released before Christmas. The next Luddenham Show is coming up on the 18th & 19th of February in 2017 and the committee are currently looking for sponsors and stall holders. Further information can be found on their website www.luddenhamshow.com.au or the Luddenham Show Facebook page. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you and your family a Safe and Merry Christmas and look forward to what will happen in 2017 with planning around town.  Trevor Roots, Angus Taylor, Patrick Darley-Jones & Wayne Willmington | Image Supplied

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Animal Protein – Does It Cause Or Help Osteoporosis?? OK so let’s look at one of the most misunderstood nutrients when it comes to osteoporosis - protein. There is a lot of misleading literature that suggests that excess protein consumption – especially animal protein - can be a cause of osteoporosis, by increasing calcium loss via the urine. But let’s take a look at what well done science tells about protein’s effect on bone (including animal protein). Protein makes up 50% of bone volume, 1/3 of its mass. It forms a network throughout bone around which calcium crystalizes. This network is continually broken down and rebuilt, but to rebuild it, the body needs protein from the diet. So dietary (animal) protein intake from real food: o Increases urinary calcium excretion, but o Increases intestinal calcium absorption o Does not result in net reduction in calcium balance o Has a direct anabolic effect on bone (independent of calorie intake) which helps build bone (by) o Increasing production of a bone building hormone called IGF-1 (that) o The drives formation of the structural matrix of bone Note: A net calcium loss from the body is observed when purified proteins or amino acids are taken in isolation as in body building supplements for example, but this does not happen with protein in whole food form, from animal or plant

sources. Clinical studies do not support that animal proteins are detrimental to bone health, or that vegetable proteins are better for bone health. Indeed, some (but not all) studies show animal protein is associated with increased IGF, mineralization, and fewer fractures. This doesn’t give all those meat-o-philes the green light to avoid there veges though!! Vegetables in the diet beneficially effect bone health, indeed bone loss observed statistically in populations with increased meat consumption may actually be more a reflection of inadequate vegetable intake. Importantly, protein intakes that are too low (< 50g per day = ½ a salmon fillet, for a 60kg adult) actually cause reduced intestinal Ca absorption, plus increased parathyroid hormone which then causes leaching of calcium from bone. If you have read my other articles on osteoporosis, you will be getting the picture that building and maintaining strong bones depends on many factors. A balanced, highly varied, nutrientrich whole food diet that ‘includes enough protein’ is key. So whether from animal or plant sources, complete protein will help the body build and keep bones strong. Protein from organic grass fed animals‌ especially nutrient-rich organ meats, muscle meats, or wild caught fish, oysters & other sea foods is best; or a carefully combined mix of organic pulses and whole-grains is required if you are a vegetarian.

Here we are, the final publication of the year. It’s been a brilliant year of bringing local businesses to your door, it’s no secret that ‘We Love Local’ and thank you for supporting local business too. Christmas is almost upon us! Spare a thought for those that are entering this Festive Season with emptiness and a heavy heart, whether it’s the first year or a repeat of many without that special someone, the pain seems to remain the same. Dr Seuss once said ‘Sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory’. Share many special moments with those close to you this Festive Season. From the team here at the District Gazette, we wish you and yours a happy and safe Christmas and New Year, we’ll be back in February 2017! Stay safe!
