It’s Hello Big School For Heidi It’s that time of year, where thousands of girls and boys across the state wave goodbye to their parents as they start ‘big school’ for the first time. One of those children starting school for the first time was local girl Heidi Lewtschenko. Five year old Heidi attends Holy Family Primary School in Luddenham and was the first of her siblings to start school, with little brother Nash still at home. Despite this, she was lucky to have friends that she made at the Kindy orientation. “I like playing with my friends, doing craft and learning to read” said Heidi about her favourite things to do at big school. Like so many, Heidi’s first day of school was a day that her parents Gary and Jacqui will never forget and will cherish for a lifetime. “It was a day of mixed emotions for us. Watching our first born begin school was exciting and we look forward to watching her grow and develop” said Jacqui Lewtschenko, Heidi’s Mum. Already, Heidi has her sights set firmly on a life with lots of fun and play after she finishes big school. “I want to work at Kmart because there are hundreds of toys there. After that, I want to be a Ballerina because I love to dance and wear a tutu” she proudly said. Proving that history can certainly repeat itself, Heidi’s Mum Jacqui has a fond memory of Kindergarten that relates to her daughter; “One of Heidi’s Kindergarten teachers also taught me in Kindergarten”. We would like to wish all those students who began their school journey the very best of luck this year.  Heidi Is All Smiles | Image Supplied Property Management Services. s. Since participating on ‘The Voice’, life certainly hasn’t slowed down for Mulgoa’s own songstress, Brittanie Shipway, and she is looking forward to another big year filled with lots of promise and excitement. “My highlights last year included getting into NIDA (National Institute of Dramatic Art). I studied a Diploma of Musical Theatre. It was one of the best things I’ve ever done. I learnt so muchâ€? said Brittanie. This was on the back of studying at the Lee Strasberg Institute of Theatre and Film in New York. “It’s the original Method Acting School, where actors such as Marilyn Monroe, Angelina Jolie, Robert Deniro and Kevin Spacey have studied at. It was very surreal to study there in the same building!â€? she said. Brittanie plans on pursuing Musical Theatre this year, something that she is very passionate about. “There are so many wonderful shows out in Australia at the moment. Shows like Kinky Boots, Aladdin, Muriel’s Wedding and Book of Mormon. It’s a good time to get involvedâ€? Brittanie explained. She will also continue doing corporate singing for events and weddings as well as a one-woman Cabaret show here and there. When asked if she preferred singing or acting, Brittanie found it hard to split the two professions; “I love both, but I think the best singers were the ones who entertained the audience and told a story. I think a lot of singers don’t have that quality anymore and the music doesn’t mean as muchâ€?. There’s no doubt that being on ‘The Voice’ lifted Brittanie’s profile within the industry, but it’s her hard work and dedication that will help her to continue to shine. “The Voice was an amazing experience. Before I auditioned, I had stopped performing all together, but it made me realise how much I love to perform. It may be a hard industry, but there’s nothing I would rather do!â€? she finished. ď ˛ Mulgoa’s talented singer/actress Brittanie Shipway Image: BluePrint Studios

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender | The Anglican Parish of Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am 1st and 3rd Sunday @ St Thomas’ Mulgoa | A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa 2nd, 4th and 5th Sunday @ St Paul’s Warragamba | A: 4 Weir Road Warragamba

Meet John Mahoney

and

Laura

I am very excited to be able to announce that on New Year’s Day, 2017, John Mahoney, with his wife Laura, have begun full time ministry in the Anglican Parish of Mulgoa! While John will be part of the Ministry Team at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, his major focus will be the Parish of Mulgoa, with myself still overseeing both the Mulgoa and Glenmore Park Parishes. This is such a great step because it means that Christian Ministry can now flourish in Mulgoa, Wallacia, Silverdale, Warragamba and Luddenham. John comes to this position after having completed four years of Theological study at Moore College. One of the things that impressed me about John was his passion to work with people and to get to know them. John and Laura’s goal is to make the Mulgoa Parish their home, ‘doing life’ with people and helping them see that Jesus really is the answer in all of life’s situations. John is enthusiastically looking forward to spending time with people, especially being able to speak God’s word from the Bible into their lives to help them know Jesus more and more. John loves anything to do with stories, particularly enjoying reading and movies. Laura loves the garden and being outside in God’s creation. Laura has also recently completed a

Master’s Degree in Arts Therapy, qualifying her for a number of counselling and therapeutic roles. They are expecting their first child in late March! John and Laura would love to meet you and have you and your family join with them on Sundays, where you, like many others in the Mulgoa Parish, have the opportunity to find real life by connecting with Jesus and connecting with others. To find out more check out our website (see the details above), give me a call on 4733 1635 or simply turn up on Sunday – we would love to see you! Rev John Lavender

Pastor’s Corner Happy New Year to each of you, I hope this year will bring you good health and happiness. During the holiday break each week I have been minding two of my grand-children, who are one and six years of age. Like many brother and sister combinations there is love and areas of disagreement, usually blaming each other. Recently I read a story, about a man who was the sole survivor of a shipwreck. He found himself washed up on a small deserted island. He built a small hut from driftwood to protect him from the weather and would gather food from his surroundings. He was a man of faith, so he prayed each day that God would send someone to rescue him. One day after gathering food, he returned to his hut to found it on fire, it burnt completely down. Why did you do this God? He shouted angrily. Later on he heard the sound of a ship approaching the island, they had come to rescue him. How did you manage to find me? He asked. We saw your distress beacon, the fire they replied. How easy is it to blame God for the challenges and difficulties we face in life. Yet, God loves us so much that He sent His Son to pay the price for our mistakes, our sins. The Bible says “For I know the plans I have for you’ declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart. I will be found by you, declares the Lord. (Jeremiah 29:11-14). Did you know that God has an individual plan for you? In 2017, my prayer for each of you is that you will know God’s plan for

your life; and in doing so, you will experience great peace, love and joy, through relationship with Jesus Christ. God Bless, Lyndon

The Country Show Returns

A little bit of Mount Panorama will descend on Luddenham Showground on the 18th and 19th of February as the historic grounds will rumble to the roar of the 500-horse power V8 donks as Holden and Ford Utes scream around the main arena. All the way from Adelaide, the Trackskill V8 Race Ute Show is unquestionably one of Australia’s most spectacular car stunt teams and has been seen all over the country. Another feature will see these daring drivers pit their talents again a horse, bike and supped up lawnmower in an obstacle course. Living up to its motto of ‘The Country Show’, the annual event takes place for the 113th time on the picturesque Luddenham Showgrounds. The event is run entirely by a small, but very hard working committee, many of whom can trace their family’s association with the show all the way back to the first one. The show will kick off each morning with horse classes held on the main arena, known through the equine industry as one of the major lead up events to the Sydney Royal Easter Show. There will be cowboys battling it out with rank bulls in the open bull ride including rodeo champions of the future in the steer and poddy calf rides. The main arena will feature the dog high jump contest, yank-a-ute for the adults and yank-a-buggy for the kids. If artistic ability is more your style, there will be classes of

painting, photography, quilt making, flowers, homebrew, farm produce and even Lego building. Always renowned for the quality stage entertainment, there will be a talent quest, reptile displays with a difference, clowns and shearing demos. The main band this year is ‘Rough Stock’, back by popular demand, this great country-rock band hails from Riverstone. And, of course, the fireworks on Saturday night will be under the control of Foti’s, who are responsible for the Sydney Harbour New Year’s Eve Fireworks Show. Held in adjoining paddock will be the ever-popular sheep dog trials on Sunday. The day will also see the well-liked wood chopping contest. The stage program will include events such as ice cream eating, whip cracking and the Luddenham Country Kid hitting the stage. The Luddenham Show Committee would like to extend their sincere thanks to the 2017 Champion Sponsors; Workers Hubertus Country Club Luddenham and Catholic Cemetarys. Without their valued support and that of all the sponsors and volunteers, it would be impossible to run the show. For more information on ‘The Country Show’, find them on Facebook, visit their website or call 4773 4378. The Trackskill V8 Race Utes will be on show | Image Supplied

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com Children don’t learn skills in a vacuum. Although there is a huge amount of pressure for children to learn a vast array of skills at school, the first and most enduring lessons are learnt at home within the context of the family and parent-child relationship. Parents are a child’s first teacher. This year, I will focus on skills that you can teach your children within the family environment. Recently, a parent said to me that her mother told her not to worry about her children squabbling and fighting. Grandma said “they’ll learn to sort it out themselves”. The mother asked me “is this right?’. I replied that children aren’t born with conflict resolution or problem solving skills. These skills need to be taught like you would teach a child to tie his/her shoe laces or use their manners. If “left to it”, most children will resort to using yelling, aggression, or withdrawal to resolve conflict because frankly that is what is role modelled for them most of the time. Problem Solving 1. State what the problem is. Most children (and many adults) will blame someone else for the conflict. I get children to state the problem in an objective way, without blame. Instead of saying “Jamie won’t share the ball with me”, we get to a point where the problem is stated as “we both want to play with the ball”. Blame is a dead end street, we get stuck and can’t find a way out. 2. After the problem is stated, we then have to come up with some solutions to the problem. Children as young as 5 can usually come up with 4 or 5 solutions. It doesn’t matter to me if it is a silly solution (for example, ‘take the ball off Jamie’), because the next step sorts that out. I rarely provide children with a solution, because I don’t want them to become dependent on me to solve their problems. I want them to learn the skill and use it. 3. For each of the solutions, ask: • Is it safe? • Is it fair? • How will other people feel about it? • Will it work? 4. Choose the best solution, and apply it. 5. Review how it worked. If it didn’t work, try another solution. You will need to be really consistent in supporting children to learn and use this skill. It will take longer than a year of consistent use. Over on my blog (https://handsheartsminds.wordpress. com/), I am going to be writing about the types of skills that we as parents need to teach children to give them great life skills. I have counted at least 30. I will also be trying to add a visual that you can download and put on the fridge or your noticeboard. So keep an eye on the blog and this column.

Paint The Town rEAd Is Coming To Warragamba and We Need You!! • Are you passionate about children’s development and access to early learning opportunities? • How important do you think reading and early literacy and numeracy education is? • Would you like to be a part of an initiative in your local community to support this? Paint the Town rEAd is a community capacity building model that encourages all levels of the community to read, talk, sing and rhyme with children from birth, so that they will be ready for reading and writing at school. Businesses, services and local community members come together to provide activities and events that are designed to give families and children access to approved early literacy and numeracy materials which promote early learning and school readiness. It is also accompanied by a community mascot which makes for a fun and interactive aspect for the children. Warragamba has a current mascot, the Wombat but this can be subject to change dependent upon community feedback. Warragamba has been trying to get this project up and running before, but it is not possible without the ongoing dedication and commitment from our local community members and organisation. Thomas Wins First Place In National Songwriting Competition

Local student Thomas Wilson from Warragamba Public School recently won First Place in the Year K-2 Songs category of the Australian Children’s Music Foundation’s National Songwriting Competition, with an original song titled Mario & Luigi. Don Spencer, Founder and CEO of the ACMF, launched the NSC fourteen years ago, to inspire creativity, imagination and self-expression in children. The ACMF National Songwriting Competition is Australia’s foremost youth songwriting competition, since its inception the NSC has received almost 30,000 original songs from school students across Australia. The NSC is the longest running and most successful children’s songwriting competition in Australia. Entry to the annual competition is free, with over $15,000 in prize money shared between the 2016 winners, to be used for musical equipment or tuition. ACMF CEO and Founder, Don Spencer said “It’s so important that children are encouraged to be creative through songwriting. I was thrilled by the quality of this year’s entries, and the judging of the NSC was held at APRA’s headquarters in Sydney, with entries judged by music industry experts. Congratulations to all the winners in the different age groups in this years’ song competition, and particular congratulations to local student Thomas Wilson who won First in the K-2 Songs category.” To hear Thomas’ winning entry, go to www.acmf.com.au Thomas is in good company, with other student winners from the ACT, NSW, SA, TAS, VIC and WA. Overall winner of the 2016 National Songwriting Competition, Lily Ward, from Albert Park in Victoria won with a song titled Joan. Proud winner Thomas Wilson| Image: JohnnyD Photography

What’s Happening @ Warradale FC? Female players needed. Are you a female aged 12 years or above? We are hoping to have our first ever full female team in 2017. If you or someone you know is interested, please contact the club at admin@warradalefc.com for further information. Valentine’s Day, you either love it or hate it, are a hopeless romantic or a true cynic when it comes to the warm and fuzzy heart stuff. The fact is; about 90 per cent of the people in the age group of 18-24 and 45 per cent of people above 50; are said to celebrate the annual event in Australia on February 14th, and according to stvalentinesday.org surveys; men in Australia are more romantic and open about expressing their love compared to Australian women. So what will you be doing this Valentine’s Day? The heart filled day originated as a Western Christian liturgical feast day honouring one or more early saints named Valentinus, and is recognized as a significant cultural and commercial celebration in many regions around the world. Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint Valentine, is an annual holiday celebrated on February 14. The day first became associated with romantic love within the circle of Geoffrey Chaucer in the 14th century, when the tradition of courtly love flourished. In 18th-century England, it evolved into an occasion in which lovers expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, and sending greeting cards. Keep things simple when expressing your love, a simple card or a nice romantic dinner might be all they need. If you’re single why not treat yourself to one of your favourite things. If you would like to send your special someone a eco friendly message why not visit www.123greetings.com and send them an e-card. Spread the love, feel the tingles and enjoy the warm and fuzzy.  Image: pexels.com

Researchers at Western Sydney University are looking for participants for a study exploring the long-term experiences of losing a parent during childhood. There is a growing body of knowledge regarding childhood loss and grief, but little is known about adults who have lived with childhood parental death and their subsequent parenting experiences. To better understand this sensitive issue, researchers from the School of Nursing and Midwifery are inviting parents who have experienced childhood parental death to share their experiences. Lead Researcher Dr. Gill Murphy says the study will give a voice to those who may have lived with long standing grief. “This study will generate significant new information about helpful responses for children who experience the unfortunate death of a parent,” says Dr. Murphy. “This new knowledge will highlight potential interventions to support children and adults in their journeys of loss and recovery.” “It will also be relevant for health and social care professionals who are working with families who lost a parent.” The research team is calling for participants who are happy to meet with Dr. Murphy, to take part in the study. In particular, the researchers are looking for English speaking adults who lost a parent as a child and who are now a parent themselves.

Calcium Supplements For Bone Strength: The Hidden Dangers Calcium and bone health, a huge topic & almost impossible to do it justice without writing a book!! But this month I’ll look at the possible down sides to calcium supplements. Calcium supplement can be dangerous for two reasons. In the short-term, excess calcium intake (usually above 4g Ca / day, but incidents have been reported with as little as 1g) can lead to Milk-alkali syndrome - headache, mental clouding, nausea, vomiting and renal failure. This has been more common recently among older women due in part to emphasis on calcium therapy for osteoporosis, especially when combined with OTC medicines for reflux. In the long term mounting evidence links the taking of ‘calcium supplements to prevent bone-loss’ to an increased risk of death from heart attack. Much recent research has made this link, but the research also says that when higher calcium intakes were achieved from just food (no supplements) risk of cardiovascular actually decreased. Calcium concentration in the blood stream is very tightly controlled at a level of 1.25mM per litre of blood. This control is maintained over a wide range of calcium intake ‘from food’, but it’s not maintained when calcium comes from supplements. Research has shown that 9% of women taking calcium

supplements had evidence of hypercalcemia (high blood calcium), 31% had hypercalcuria (excess calcium spilling into urine). Importantly it seems that when calcium is taken as a supplement little of ‘the additional calcium‌ is incorporated into bone by adults’, but instead, ‘it may lead to calcium accumulation in the body, i.e. it can deposit in & calcify our arteries and other soft-tissues of the body. Calcification of the arteries causes hardening & increases risk of death from heart attack. This is where vitamin K, so important for strengthening bone (see previous article) comes in again. A large percentage of the population on western diets are Vitamin K deficient especially those with bowel issues. Vitamin K allows production of a protein called MGP by cells of your artery wall. This protein stops calcification of arteries. Foods like green leafy vegetables that are high in both calcium and vitamin K help keep bones strong and arteries uncalcified and elastic! So why not just add vitamin K to Ca supplements? This happens, but remember that human calcium physiology (including bones and arteries) is dependent on many substances, not just calcium and vitamin K! A correct diet provides all the factors for this physiology to work properly.

Warradale Men’s Shed Update

A very Happy New Year to all and we are pleased to announce that we are back to our weekly hours of Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 10 - 2 p.m. The lads have sobered up and ready to tackle a number of jobs, or just to relax over a cuppa and talk about old times. Thank you all for participating in our Christmas Raffle, the winners were Kathy Cranstone, Elaine Bonning and Ted Ross. Kathy was over the moon with her win and we nearly lost our Chairman Terry Atkins when he delivered the prize to her! We wish all the blokes out there a very healthy 2017 and remember, we at the Shed offer a helping hand; To those of you who have time to spare to come down to see us and join in any of the activities. Mixing with lads of your own age and just talking over old times is a very good medicine. Some of you could even have old trades which we are able to use. Finding a new hobby or pastime can also be found down at the Shed which is easily found opposite the Warragamba Workers Club. So come along, a warm welcome awaits you. Don’t just sit at home, there is nothing worth watching on T.V. anyway!! For further details contact Terry on 4653 1943, Ron 4774 1343, Rudi 4774 1516.

are with his wife & family. RIP John During January we have seen a new high fence erected around the Public School, it seems a shame that we will no longer be able to stroll thru the school grounds, but it is obviously a sign of things to come. The next big event will be the 113th Luddenham Show that will be held on the 18th & 19th of February. The committee are currently looking for volunteers to work at the show and stall holders; further information can be found on their website luddenhamshow.com.au or the Luddenham Show Facebook page, you can also email secretary@luddenhamshow.com.au With all the changes occurring in our Community the Luddenham Progress Association is the group to be involved with to keep up-to-date, they meet on the first Wednesday of the month in the hall. New members are welcome. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com we all need to work together to get the best results for the new Luddenham.

Latest @ Luddenham

by Wayne Willmington

Welcome to 2017 and another big year of change for Luddenham and the surrounding towns. Since our last update there have been a few major decisions that will affect us. Sydney Science Park achieves rezoning! A significant milestone for the team at Celestino that means that they are officially on the way to realising a truly unique Science City right here in Luddenham. To find out more visit their website celestino.net.au. They are hoping to have part of it open next year. The Roads and Maritime selected a modified option as the preferred corridor route for the M12 Motorway. See the attached photo for details. Also December saw The Hon Paul Fletcher MP, Minister for Urban Infrastructure, announce the final determination of Western Sydney Airport meaning that it is no longer a Proposed Airport, it will be Western Sydney Airport and work will now begin. Some sad news with the death of John Gaven from Willowdene Ave, John was a Great Luddenham Resident and long-term member of the Progress Association, our thoughts

PAWS A WHILE

$2000 Guide Dog Donation from the Santa Photos with Pets Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2016 and photos were taken with your pets. We all enjoyed watching your pets get dressed up with Santa hats and scarves and sitting on Santa’s knee for a photo. With a lot of laughs and giggles, we took many cute Santa photos. Thank you for all of the donations for the photos. With your great support, we raised $2000 for The Guide Dogs NSW/ACT!! Wow!! We all had lots of fun and The Guide Dogs get a great donation. Thanks again for participating. Too much fun!!

Keeping Your Pets Safe in the Heat Wave With the unrelenting hot weather, it is important to look after your pets: • Provide shelter for your pets, so they get away from direct sunlight. • Provide plenty of water. Animals do not sweat like humans and they rely on the evaporation of the water in their mouths to cool themselves down. So they need extra water so they do not overheat. • Provide extra water sources in case they are spilled. • Provide kiddy pools so your pet can lay in the water. • Bring your pets indoors with air conditioning, if possible.

• Consider day boarding in air conditioning. • Avoid exercising your pets during the heat of the day. Walk them in the early morning, or later at night when it is cooler. • Do not leave pets in a car or vehicle. • If your pet has a medical condition, they may be more prone to heat stroke: e.g. obesity; Brachycephalic breeds (shortnosed/flat-faced) e.g. Pugs, English bull dogs, French bulldogs, Pekingese and Persian and Himalayan cats; Respiratory disease/ breathing problems - laryngeal paralysis, collapsing trachea; Thick/long hair coat; Heart problems/Cardiovascular disease; Extremes in age (young/old); Neurological disease.

Signs of Heat Stroke Common signs include: Incessant panting; Drooling, salivating; Agitation, restlessness; Very red or pale gums; Bright red tongue; Increased heart rate; Breathing distress; Vomiting, Diarrhoea (possibly with blood); Signs of mental confusion, delirium; Dizziness, staggering; Lethargy; weakness; Muscle tremors; Seizures; Collapsing and lying down; Little to no urine production; Coma or Death. How do you treat a pet with heatstroke? First step is to instigate Emergency First Aid by bathing your pet in cool water. Heat stroke is a life threatening emergency - always see a vet. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out our Facebook, website www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027.

Welcome to our first edition for 2017! I know the Christmas and New Year period raced by in a blur for many, and here we are, already facing what February has in store. Time to set your New Year's Resolution straight from the get-go! If you didn't quite achieve last year's; here's another chance to wipe the slate clear, dust off your knees, and get back up again for another go at it! It's back to school for many students across our community, and who can forget that very first introduction to BIG school? Our lead story captures the excitement and emotions of this wonderful chapter! Starting school is an important step in a child's life, enjoy the ride. I stumbled across this saying recently, and wanted to share it with you; for how true it is. "Create a life that feels good on the inside; not one that just looks good on the outside." Enjoy your Community News.
