Big Year Wombats
for
the
Warragamba
With the 2017 season well under way, the Warragamba Wombats Junior Rugby League Club already looks to have another big year in the local competition. This season, there are approximately 115 players registered with the club, who lace up their boots each week and represent teams in the Under 6’s, Under 7’s, Under 8’s, Under 9’s, Under 10’s, Under 11A’s, Under 12A’s and the Under 15/16’s. The Junior Club’s highlights this year have included the NRL hosting a clinic on their registration day, obtaining an electronic scoreboard, a major clean-up of the club-house supported by parents, committee and kids; and game day write ups provided by coaches at the end of games which has encouraged the players to remain positive, highlighting individual and team achievements which are also posted on the Wombats Facebook Page. “The club spirit shown by parents and players has been great. We have also had extensive sponsorship support with many of our sponsors being local businesses” said Ben Baldacchino, President of the Warragamba Wombats Junior Rugby League Club. The calendar of events ahead for the Junior Club will keep them busy, which starts with hosting a semi-final weekend on the 12th and 13th of August, followed by an annual function evening in the next couple of months, the presentation at the end of the season and the AGM at the end of the year. Registrations officially close in July as per Group 6 regulations, reopening for next year in November; where coaches are nominated at or after the AGM. They are always looking for new players, coaches and coaching staff. Sponsors are always welcome with packages developed to suit. Volunteers and memberships are also encouraged. “The best thing about being part of the club in the local community is working with a great bunch of people, committee, parents and kids, which allow us to put kids on the football field every week. The club is completely reliant on volunteers, who go above and beyond week in week out. We do live in a great, close-knit, supportive community that is apparent within our club” said Ben. FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA
Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender | The Anglican Parish of Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am 1st and 3rd Sunday @ St Thomas’ Mulgoa | A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa 2nd, 4th and 5th Sunday @ St Paul’s Warragamba | A: 4 Weir Road Warragamba
A Pleasant Surprise One of the things that pleasantly surprises people at Mulgoa Anglican Church is that what God has to say to us in the Bible continually speaks to them about exactly the sorts of things they have to think about and wrestle with every day! Freedom from anxiety. Joy. Hope for the future. Being a husband or wife. Love. Resilience. Humility. Compassion. Contentment. Dealing with fear. The big surprise for so many is that the Bible speaks helpfully about all this and more! Getting under way on Sundays in July at our Church, we will be looking at the Apostle Peter’s first letter in the Bible. Here are just a few of the great verses from Peter’s letter that we will be thinking about, and discovering how they can make a difference to our life and to our world; “Cast all your anxiety on God because he cares for you.” “Love one another deeply, from the heart.” “Live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers and sisters, be compassionate and humble. Do not repay evil with evil.” “Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps.” “Husbands...be considerate as you live with your wives... treat

them with respect.” “Wives...your beauty should not come from outward adornment...instead, it should be that of the inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit.” “Do not fear what they fear...But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord.” “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given has new birth in a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Chris from the dead.” We would love to share all these amazing and life changing truths with everyone living in and around Mulgoa and Warragamba. It would be great to see you on Sundays so you too can experience the transforming difference that knowing Jesus brings. Rev John Lavender

The Wollondilly Health Alliance in partnership with Wollondilly Shire Council, launched the new outdoor gym equipment at Warragamba Recreation Reserve, Warradale Road last month. Community members and student councillors from the local Warragamba Public School attended the launch with Wollondilly Shire Council - Councillor Michael Banasik officially unveiling the equipment to the public. The equipment has been installed in support of the Wollondilly Health Alliance healthy town’s survey that was undertaken in July last year. The aim of the survey was to determine the communities’ opinions on how we could try to provide opportunities to grow Wollondilly into a healthier community. A list of options and opportunity for other suggestions were provided in the survey and Outdoor Gym Equipment in Parks was identified as a need by the community to become a healthier town. The Wollondilly Health Alliance Project Officer has been working with Wollondilly Shire Councils Infrastructure Team since November 2016 to identify an appropriate location for the equipment to be installed (which is within a fenced off area in the same boundary of children’s playground equipment). Procurement and installation of the equipment is now complete and the official launch welcomed the community to begin utilising this exciting piece of infrastructure. In addition to the launch of the equipment; Adults are welcome to participate in 10 free weekly group sessions led by a qualified fitness leader commencing Term 3, 2017 (week beginning, 17 July) days to be determined pending participant availability however, the sessions will either be Tuesday 9.30am or Friday 9.30am for 1 hour. If you are interested and would like to find out more please contact Paige on 0476 832 545. Councillor Michael Banasik unveils Warragamba’s new outdoor gym. Image Supplied

PRESS RELEASE A damn lot more than the Dam Warragamba Village is looking tired and businesses have closed or moved elsewhere since the closure of the Lion Park, the 2001 bushfires and the lack of access to the dam since 9/11. Wollondilly Council’s protracted planning processes are also a barrier to the opening of new businesses and the expansion of existing. Sydney Water’s discovery of asbestos at the viewing platform, and their lack of enthusiasm for removal, has also had an effect on visitor numbers. To turn this situation around the Warragamba Business Association has been formed by a group of business operators and commercial property owners in Warragamba Village. Warragamba is more than just the dam, and the Association is determined to bring life back into the village. Over the next few weeks Association spokesperson, Carol Robins, will announce a number of initiatives and projects, designed to not only support the community, but also attract visitors to the village. For further information and enquiries please contact 0411 595 955 during business hours.

PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com The root word of ‘prejudice’ is ‘judge’. ‘Pre’ means ‘before’. So, ‘prejudice’ means that we judge someone before we get to know them. When I asked the kids at school what they feel other kids judge them on, they said… "skin colour, being smart, being quiet, being chubby or skinny, being tall or short, race, clothing, religion, disability, stereotypes, mental health, special interests, appearance." That’s a lot of prejudice! And prejudice can lead to teasing, exclusion, misunderstanding, and in extreme cases, bullying. When we are busy pointing out difference, we become blind to the ways we are the same. This deprives us of the opportunity to get along with others and learn from each other. We have also been talking about the concept of fairness. Fairness is not everyone having the same. That’s actually not possible. A child who gets around in a wheelchair will always need a ramp. A child with autism or ADHD may need some learning support. They are getting something extra than everyone else in order to give them the same opportunities as other children. That’s life, and it’s a good lesson for children to learn. So, how do we get to know someone? A good conversation may include: introducing yourself; complimenting the other person on something; asking questions (in moderation); finding common interests; being a good listener; introducing other topics; ending the conversation in a friendly manner (say it was nice talking to them, suggest talking later, offer to play). It’s good to have a conversation with kids about this sort of stuff – prejudice, fairness, getting to know others. Sometimes kids are unintentionally judging or excluding other children because they are not aware of what they are doing. That causes a lot of unnecessary hurt, sadness, anger, and misunderstanding. It makes it easier to support kids to learn new skills and behaviours when you have raised their awareness of these concepts. I love teaching kids, in gentle ways, how to think beyond themselves, stretching them to think and grow and learn. It helps to make people who know better and do better. From. Pg 1
Wallacia Public School 120 Year Celebration The school will be organising some old fashioned props, so everyone can get a special photo taken at the sensational Parents and Citizens photo booth. The P&C team will be uploading all photos to social media for families and individuals to access. The official ceremony will start in the school at 9am with a special assembly event. This will be followed by their Stage 3 class, who will be running some fun stalls in their quest to serve the community and raise some funds for the year 6 farewell. This is sure to be a treat. The school will be providing FREE pizza at recess time. Please come along, enjoy and re-live their special school spirit. A lot has changed over the years. However, one thing has not changed, Wallacia is a place where children are inspired to learn and where they thrive as individuals, a place filled with young people who care about each other and about making the world a better place.

Nepean Christian School ‘Buzzes’ With Activity
Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP has visited Nepean Christian School to officially open the new library facility, ‘The Hive.’ As well as view the new operational security access gates and block-out shutters funded under the 2015/2016 Community Building Partnership Program. Tanya Davies was joined by Nepean Christian School Principal Cameron Nunn on her recent visit. Under the Building Grants Assistance Scheme (BGAS), Nepean Christian School received a $700,000 grant which contributed to building the school’s new library facility, ‘The Hive.’ “I am pleased to join the Nepean Christian School community in officially opening ‘The Hive.’ This state-of-the-art library
will open a world full of imagination, creativity, learning and opportunity for all the students at Nepean Christian School. This is a wonderful example of the impact that the Building Grants Assistance Scheme is making in our schools,” Tanya Davies said. BGAS grants are directed towards independent and Catholic schools with the greatest need, to help schools cater for growing enrolments, and to refurbish or build new facilities. “I am sure ‘The Hive’ will be buzzing with activity,” Tanya Davies said. Under the 2015 Community Building Partnership Program, Nepean Christian School received a grant worth $19,406 towards funding signage, security access gates and entrance lights at the school. “The essence of the Community Building Partnership Program is to support projects that benefit our local community through funding initiatives that encourage growth and development,” Tanya Davies said. Under the 2016 Community Building Partnership Program, Nepean Christian School received a grant worth $10,000 towards the purchasing of block-out shutters for the school hall. “As the school hall is used for a number of community activities, the installation of the block-out shutters will enable the hall to be utilised safely for both school and community based performances,” Tanya Davies said. BGAS is administered by the Association of Independent Schools NSW and the NSW Catholic Block Grant Authorities and funded by the NSW Government. For more information about the Community Building Partnership Program, please visit: http://www. communitybuildingpartnership.nsw.gov.au/home.

WHAT’S COOKING
Fidget Spinner Cookies
Fun these School Holidays
Ingredients 2 ½ Cups all-purpose flour ¾ Cup sugar ¼ Teaspoon table salt 1 Cup unsalted butter, room temperature 2 Teaspoons vanilla extract 2 Tablespoons cream cheese, at room temperature Royal Icing of any colour for decoration Method 1. Preheat oven to heat oven to 350°F/180°C. 2. In a large bowl, add the flour, sugar, salt, and mix together with a wooden spoon, until fully incorporated. 3. Add the softened butter and continue to mix until the mixture looks crumbly and slightly wet, about 1 minute longer. Add vanilla and cream cheese and mix until dough just begins to form large clumps, about 30 seconds. 4. Transfer the dough to the table and knead dough by hand until it becomes a cohesive ball. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. 5. Roll out the dough to ¼-inch thickness. Cut into the desired shape using cookie a cutter or a fidget spinner for the spinning part, and a water bottle cap to cut to make 2 centre circles for each cookie. 6. Take the extra dough and roll out again to ½-inch thickness. With a straw, poke out small pegs that will act as dowels for the fidget spinner cookies. 7. With the same straw poke holes in the fidget spinner cookie centres and move it around in a circle widening the hole to be larger than the diameter of the pegs that were just punched out. 8. Place all the shapes on parchment-lined baking sheet and bake until light golden brown, about 15 minutes, rotating baking sheet halfway through. 9. Cool the cookies completely. Then decorate as you like with your favourite frosting or decorations. 10. Use frosting, caramel, or royal icing as glue to attach a peg to the backside of one of the small circles, place the fidget spinner cookie base over the peg and attach the second circle cookie with more frosting. Let all the frosting dry before attempting to spin. 11. Enjoy! Source: https://www.buzzfeed.com/matthewfjohnson/make-these-fidget-spinnercookies-to-spin-and-eat-your?utm_term=.hd9KmNVL#.aq8nYW6l

Magnesium - The Forgotten Bone Mineral! Magnesium (Mg) has been defined the forgotten electrolyte, in bone. 60% of your body’s magnesium is contained in bone & although it makes up only 1% of the mineral in bone, deficiency can heavily impact bone health. There are many reasons for Magnesium deficiency including rare genetic conditions. In modern society Mg deficiency is mostly due to poor diet and medications such as some diuretics, antibiotics or antineoplastic drugs. Much of today’s diet consists of refined and/or processed cereal-crop carbohydrate foods from which most magnesium (Mg) has been removed or unavailable. Examples include cereal or toast for breakfast, multigrain sandwich bread for lunch; spaghetti bol, pizza, or fluffy white rice for dinner. Diuretics used for blood pressure control for example can cause loss of magnesium through the kidneys. Research suggests that many western women have a Mg intake that’s 30-56% below their 320mg recommended daily intake (RDI), men 38-59% below their 420mg RDI. Some countries recommend much higher intakes i.e. 500 – 1250mg daily; and stress increases your Mg requirements to over 1000mg per day. This can lead to Mg deficiency. Animal experiments show us that Mg intakes 75% below requirement leads to decreased bone volume and trabecular thickness. How does this happen? Low magnesium intake and deficiency: 1. Alters form of mineral crystals in bone making bones much weaker 2. Lowers blood levels of ‘bone building’ parathyroid hormone (PTH)
3.
Lowers the ability of ‘bone building’ and other cells to respond to PTH which can lead to loss of calcium through the kidneys 4. Reduces the body’s ability to convert vitamin D to its active form (1,25 vitamin D). which stimulates calcium uptake from food 5. Increases chronic production of inflammatory mediators which depress bone building and stimulate bone resorption resulting in weak bones [osteopenia] 6. May lead to low grade acidity of blood which increases calcium loss from bone. Mg probably buffers against blood acidity to prevent this. Longer term use (over 2 years) of magnesium supplements after menopause prevented fractures. In one trial, 71% of women experienced a significant increase in bone density. Interestingly very high Mg intake may be harmful to bone by: 1. Depressing bone mineralisation 2. Inhibiting bone mineral crystal formation 3. Producing mineralization defects leading to weaker bones and more fractures. Many patients ask me, ‘so can’t I just take that as a supplement?’ The short answer - ‘Yes you can’! But you risk skewing metabolism when you take single nutrients, because they never work in isolation! So, most of the time, the best source is always whole unprocessed foods. Sesame seeds, Brazil nuts & almonds are three of the best magnesium sources; green leafy vegetables such as silver beet and spinach, beans, even kefir yoghurt are also excellent magnesium foods that will help keep your bones strong.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Following on from last month I can confirm that Jean & Artie Willmington’s Cuppa for Cancer handed over a cheque to the NSW Cancer Council of $44,669. Well Done! Work on the new track at Luddenham Raceway is well underway, the main activities that will be held on the track are car and bike track days, product launches, corporate activities, driver training, experiences and testing / tuning. The track will be asphalt and should be ready to open in January 2018. More information can be obtained by email: info@luddenhamraceway. com Last month, a Western Sydney Airport Industry Information Session was held to provide information to interested parties on future tendering opportunities in the Western Sydney Airport project. The development of the Western Sydney Airport involves significant design, engineering, technical, certification, project management and construction works. The works to be completed for the Stage 1 development include, earthworks to move and redistribute 22 million cubic metres of soil on the Badgerys Creek site, a 3.7-kilometre runway, aprons, taxiways and other appropriate aviation facilities; including a terminal with a floor area of up to 90,000 square metres. Add to this, drainage, utilities, car-parking for around 11,500 cars and onsite roads. The session is tailored specifically for established businesses with expertise, experience and capacity to undertake significant transport infrastructure projects. Some locals have contacted me about the high voltage power lines that go through the airport site and where they may end up, here is the official answer from Transgrid. “Western Sydney Airport- Relocation of a 3.2km section of the TransGrid-owned Line 39, which transects the airport site and is incompatible with the development of an airport. Replacement of the existing 3.2 km of transmission line with an underground cable - primarily
along the perimeter of the airport site but wholly located on Commonwealth-owned land. Build of two new transition towers and switching stations where the existing off-site overhead transmission line meets the proposed underground cable (on existing TransGrid easements). The contract has been awarded to upgrade Northern Road from Oran Park to Bringelly and stage 2 of Bringelly Road to Bringelly including the new under - overpass. Work will also take place on Jamison Road Penrith to the Glenmore Park round-about. Construction is commencing now. Getting out of Luddenham is going to be a bit slower for a few years. June saw the famous Vicary’s Winery, The Woolshed and Homestead demolished to make way for the new Western Sydney Airport, for me this is one of the hardest things so far, it is such a shame to see such an icon totally destroyed and gone forever. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com we all need to work together to get the best results for the new Luddenham.

And with that, we've moved into the second half of the year, just like that! I quite like July. I love any excuse to pop a pair of fluffy socks on, nestled into my favourite lounge with my toes strategically placed in front of the heater. July is a busy month for many. For families with school kids at home during the winter holidays, for business owners as they tidy up their end of financial year commitments and reporting; and for the community with many 'winter' social events to keep us entertained in our down time. There’s plenty of development and construction activity taking place in and around our community, Wayne has more details on page 14. "Be good to people, for no reason." For now, sit back and warm your toes by the heater, with a warm cuppa in hand and enjoy your Community News.
