Sylvia’s Amazing Milestone! Local resident Sylvia Lewis will be celebrating an amazing milestone this month, turning the age of 100 on June the 17th, after first moving into the area over 75 years ago. Sylvia, who plans to celebrate her birthday at home with her family, began her working life as a cook at the Wallacia guest house ‘Roselea’, where she met her future husband Henry. Both Sylvia and Henry then settled in Silverdale in 1941, before starting their family of 6 children, consisting of 4 girls and 2 boys. She loves the fresh air and wide spaces of Silverdale, having come from a 1,500 acre wheat farm with 20 or more horses to ride as a youth. She fondly remembers Silverdale Road as being a dirt track when she first arrived in the area and explains that there is ‘lots more traffic, people and houses now’. When asked what her secret was approaching the age of 100, Sylvia said that keeping active playing sport, eating well and the love of her family have helped her reach this age. She has also never drank or smoked in her life. Sylvia’s family said she was once a great tennis player, playing A Grade for many years. This included socially until the age of 85 and spending time after that teaching people to play. She often recalls her tournament days and the nerves that would kick in and make Silverdale’s Sylvia Lewis | Image Supplied Property Management Services. s. Making Your Priority, Our Priority. ty.

Sad Day for Warragamba Girl Guides Fifty years after its humble beginnings at the Warragamba Guide Hall, the local community was recently saddened with the news that the Warragamba Girl Guides had closed and would no longer meet in the area. “Sadly, the closure of the group was due to a lack of interest. People in Warragamba typically go outside of the area for activities, whether it’s for work or schooling. Our Leaders are volunteers and we have seen their numbers drop due to work tooâ€? said Kerrey Williams, Region Manager for Greater Rivers Region (Girl Guides NSW & ACT). Warragamba Girl Guides, which thrived on 30 plus members in its heyday, had reduced to just two Girl Guides and one Leader in recent times, making it increasingly difficult to operate. “We tried numerous campaigns to increase the Girl Guide numbers in Warragamba. We understand that it just wasn’t something for the girls in the local area. This wasn’t a decision that was made lightlyâ€? explained Kerrey. Despite the closure, there is some light to be shed, with Warragamba Girl Guides Leader Julie Thompson now taking on the role of Junior Guide Unit Leader (7-10 Years) in South Penrith. This role has not been operating for 5 years and is a great opportunity for the area. The remaining Warragamba Girl Guides also plan on continuing their activities at another location. With some Girl Guide groups boasting 80 or more members, the organisation is still very much going strong and growing. “It’s a great way for adult women to challenge themselves. Girl Guides empowers womenâ€? said Kerrey. Kerrey Williams had spent time with the Warragamba Girl Guides and their Leaders in the past and she was proud of the work that they did within the community; “The Warragamba Girl Guides support over the years has been great. They’ve supported the ANZAC Day March every year. We’re thankful for thisâ€?. The Warragamba Girl Guides were due to host a Farewell for all past and present members in late May. For more information on Girl Guides (NSW & ACT), contact Kerrey on 0412 591748. ď ˛ Early Girl Guides | Image: Girl Guide Association NSW

Listen to Him There are so many voices in our world scrambling for our attention. Faces on TV, voices on radio telling us how we should think about everything from the latest washing detergent or hair shampoo to how we should think about every political and business decision that is made. We are bombarded by ideas on everything from how we should dress to the type of car we should drive to advertisers telling us what we should buy to make us happy and healthy. In what has been called the “information age” it seems many people feel overloaded with information! But not only do people feel overloaded, it is so difficult to make fair, reasonable assessments of the truthfulness of these claims. Is any of it reliable? Will it really make a difference? From all of these competing voices is there one voice to rise above the others? A voice to bring clarity; to bring reality? In the Bible’s book of Matthew, in what must have been an extraordinary moment, there is a time when Jesus was with his disciples, and God spoke to the disciples saying, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!” Here is the voice that stands out from the crowd! At Mulgoa Anglican Church, it has been the testimony of those who attend that they have found that as Jesus “speaks”

through the pages of the Bible it is a “voice” freeing people to live the way God intended. It is a “voice” giving real sight, lifting them from the oppression of this life and giving them real direction and confident hope. Who are you listening to? Who are you getting your values and ideas and opinions from? We’d love for you to join us on Sundays where we explore the wonderful things that God has to say to us about living in His world today. Silverdale’s Very Own Novelist Local Silverdale author, Derek Roy Tomlinson, has burst onto the literary scene with two exciting novels, he has been writing for the past two years. A combination of an intense creative urge, a keen sense of humour and personal experience inspired Derek to write. Listening to audio books daily while commuting, rekindled his affection for the language of the Classic English Mystery and Adventure novel, as word-smithed by authors like Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, H Rider Haggard, Conan Doyle, Agatha Christie, their modern counterparts Patricia Cornwell, Lee Childs and John le Carre` and wonderfully complemented by their writing style. Last year, Derek submitted three short stories in a prestigious national short story competition. They have now been serialised and published on Derek’s own website at www. barringtonsofsilverdale.com. Derek has also since published two novels in both eBook and paperback editions that can be purchased online from Amazon’s website at www.amazon.com. In “The Strange Case of the Missing Thong”, three of the world’s greatest contemporary detectives, Chief Inspector Mark Ogilvie, Ex-RCMP Mountie Mr Philippe Dubois and Ms Janet Hardy, investigate the disappearance of Silverdale residents Robert and Ursula Barrington’s next door neighbours. The overseas detectives take up accommodation in Mulgoa, Wallacia and Picton. They visit Warragamba Dam, dine at the Penrith Panthers Leagues Club and attend an NRL football match. That extraordinary lady sleuth, Ms Janet Hardy, maintains her fitness by running up Fairlight Road to Mt Schoenstatt Shrine and Retreat Centre lookout and works out at a local gym. The Oxfordshire UK historic Barrington family fortune is at stake. The sequel, “The Force for Evil”, is an international up-to-the minute political thriller set in the 21st Century chaotic world of cyber-crime, extremists, terrorists, refugee crises, disenchanted voters, conspiracy theorists and the threat of nuclear war. The detectives investigate a kidnapping and murder as the unintended consequences of UN decisions become obviously the intended outcome. What is their agenda? Book three in the trilogy will be published in the third quarter of 2017. Derek and partner Sylvia say the best part about living in Silverdale is the friendly people. Neighbours in their street make a point of getting together annually to bid farewell to one year and welcome in the new one. They moved from Camden some 15 years ago after purchasing land in a quiet cul-de-sac in Silverdale and building their dream home. As keen gardeners, they love the quiet rural village setting and the wide open spaces. Derek says he derived enormous satisfaction from seeing his stories come to life in print. He advises fellow new writers to explore Independent (Indie) publishing, self-publishing and traditional publishing very carefully. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Pick the mode which best suits one’s objective, skill-set, budget and reason for writing. Derek uses Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing online service. “Be proud of what you have accomplished so far. Most everyone can read a book, many dream of writing a book one day, very few people actually do” finished Derek.

WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH
Article Written + Submitted by: Lyndon Rumsey | P: 4774 1476 M: 0417 174 455 W: warragambabaptist.org.au Sunday Service: 9:30 am
Pastor’s Corner A few years ago, I was attending a state wide conference for Church leaders. The conference was useful, good teaching and encouragement. During one of the afternoon periods, I went with a friend, for a bush walk, down to the water. As we emerged from the bush, we entered a small park and it was here that I met Eve. I didn’t know at that time, that meeting Eve would have the greatest impact on my memories of that conference. Eve was sitting on a seat in the park, drinking out of a long neck beer bottle, which was inside a paper bag. I felt compelled to sit down alongside Eve and to listen to her story. Eve was aged in her mid- 30’s and her story was one of difficulty, involved separation from her family, bouts of alcoholism, sexual abuse and incarceration. It is fair to say that Eve viewed herself, as a failure in life; she was lonely, desperate and drifting around; struggling with life in general. To quote Eve, Life Sucked! Now if I tell you that Eve came from an indigenous heritage, some of you will want to judge her, as being typical of her race. I caution you, it is so easy for some of us to think we are better than others, we might assume a position of moral superiority, based on the colour of our skin, our birthplace, our wealth, our academic achievements and our lifestyle. The bible says “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others. (Philippians 2:3-4). As Eve sobered up, I was able to share with her that Jesus loved
her and that He is gentle and humble; Jesus said “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Those words were for all the Eve’s in the world, and for people just like you and me. God Bless, Lyndon
Thank You The family of the late Leonard Ezzy would like to thank the Warragamba Ambulance Service, St Marys Police, Warragamba Workers Club, and the many people who sent cards, Floral Tributess and attended Lens funeral, wn n. as many addresses are unknown. Council Scores Hole In One With New Sponsorship
Penrith will host the NSW Open Golf Championship for the next three years thanks to a new sponsorship agreement between Penrith City Council and NSW Golf. From 2017-19, the NSW Open Golf Championship will be played at Twin Creeks Golf & Country Club with this year’s event to be held over four-days from 16-19 November. Speaking at the announcement event last month, Penrith Mayor John Thain said he was thrilled to be partnering with NSW Golf on one of Australia’s most prestigious golfing events. “As a proud sponsor of the NSW Open Golf Championship we’re looking forward to welcoming golfers from across
Australia and overseas and to showcasing Penrith to them and thousands of visitors, “ Cr Thain said. Cr Thain said seeking out and forming these types of strategic partnerships is a high priority for Council, with Penrith expected to reap significant economic benefits as a result of this new sponsorship agreement. “This three-year sponsorship will inject more than $1 million into the local economy and will promote Penrith as an exciting visitor destination to a very wide domestic and international audience,” Cr Thain said.
Penrith Mayor Cr John Thain joined Member for Penrith, Stuart Ayres and Councillor Ben Price, Councillor Mark Davies and Councillor Greg Davies at Twin Creeks Golf & Country Club for the announcement. 4 Robertson Place, South Penrith NSW 2750

How Do Empathy?
You
Teach
Children
It is difficult to teach empathy to children under the age of 4 years. This is; because the logical, rational, thinking part of the brain (cerebral cortex) doesn’t start heating up until the age of 4 years. To demonstrate empathy, you need to have something called ‘theory of mind’, that is you need to understand that other people have thoughts and feelings of their own. Young children are egocentric, they think that the universe revolves around them. Kids start to develop theory of mind from about the age of 4. Some kids are better at it than others, depending on their temperament and personality. Children who have autism or other disabilities/disorders may take a bit longer to develop theory of mind. The ability to take in another person’s perspective really kicks in around Grade 3, but it is still a slow process. It requires a lot of prompting and role modelling. Here is how I teach it at school… 1. Noticing how another person feels (facial expression, body language, what they say, the situation).“You look ….” “Are you OK?” . “How are you going today, you seem…” 2. Listening. This is where you say nothing, and you LISTEN. 3. Show empathy. “If that happened to me, I would feel…”. “I’m sorry that happened to you.” 4. Offer assistance. “How can I help?” If the person wants to be left alone, allow that, but check on them a bit later. If you are worried about the person, speak to a trusted adult. No child or young person should feel like they are responsible for another child or young person. What’s unhelpful in responding to someone else’s strong feelings? • Being dismissive – saying things like ‘you’ll be alright’, ‘suck it up’, ‘at least…’, ‘get over it’, ‘don’t be a cry baby’, ‘man up’, ‘stop being a drama queen’. • Talking about yourself. • Telling them what they should do. • Changing the subject. • Gossiping or spreading rumours. People who try to push others out of their strong feelings are usually uncomfortable with those feelings, and are attempting to make themselves feel better. Head over to the blog https://handsheartsminds.wordpress. com/ for some great videos about empathy, and a poster on this topic. They are all under the heading of “Skills for Kids”.

it so much fun. These days, Sylvia Lewis’ favourite past time is her garden, filled with her beloved sweet peas and stocks. She looks forward to her weekly bet on the horses every Saturday and is a proud supporter of the Penrith Panthers, having followed the team for 50 years. Since her late husband Henry passed away, she still lives in her family home with the caring support of two of her daughters and son in-law. You can't keep this until you have given it. A promise.

Kids Give New Playground a Thumbs Up Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club have recently installed a brand new $25,000 playground and the word from the kids is that they love it! A member survey was conducted last year and as a result the outdoor play area was ordered in January. After a 10 week wait, the equipment was delivered, installed and finally opened in April to the delight of the local children (and a few cheeky adults). “They love it”, said Lauren Heydon, Secretary Manager of the club, “it’s been very popular”. The under 12’s playground has a very open feel so that parents can keep an eye on their little ones. There is a bit of fencing near the carpark to keep them safe as well as outdoor lighting so they can play into the night. According to Lauren, the enormous basket swing is proving to be a big favourite because it holds several kids at once. Even a cheeky adult here or there has been spotted giving it a go. Lauren has been with the club for 31 years and can attest to the differences over the years. “Clubs are much more family-friendly than they used to be”, she said. “Back in the day, you didn’t take your family”. The club will be celebrating their 56th birthday on 17th June. Tickets are still available at $30 each for dinner and show and can be purchased at the club, 9-11 Eighteenth Street in Warragamba. NDIS And How To Access It The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is how the Australian Government is now delivering support for people with a permanent and significant disability. The scheme is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA). The NDIS will provide all Australians under the age of 65 who have a permanent and significant disability with access to supports they need to live the life they choose. Each person receives an individual amount of funding and is then able to choose where they wish to purchase their supports. 1. Call the NDIA on 1800 800 110 between the hours of 8am – 11pm to confirm if you are eligible. 2. Complete your Access Request Form with as much detail and evidence as possible. NDIA will contact you to confirm you have been successful and are now a participant in the scheme. 3. Attend a planning meeting with your NDIA Local Area Coordinator to discuss your needs. Following this meeting,
you will need to wait for your plan to be approved. 4. Once your plan is approved you will have to attend a plan implementation meeting with your NDIA Local Area Coordinator to discuss your approved plan and start choosing where to purchase your supports. Silicon - An Underappreciated Nutrient In Bone Health Silicon is the second most abundant element on earth, and a key element in minerals such as quartz. For a long time, it was considered biologically inert, even though 1-2g exist in the human body. But growing scientific evidence recognizes that silicon plays an essential role in the formation and maintenance of collagen containing connective tissues such as bone, ligaments and tendons. Silicon facilitates the quality of bone matrix (the collagen reinforcing in bone) and bone mineralization. Research shows that silicon is involved in the production & structural stabilisation of bone collagen. It then aids the process of proper deposition of calcium around bone collagen to make ‘bone’. Increased intake of bioavailable silicon has been associated with increased bone mineral density. In the 1970s, dietary deficiency in animals was shown to result in connective tissue & bone defects. Animal studies show that silicon is needed for: • bone formation independent of vitamin D • cross-linking of collagen and proteoglycans during bone growth • to make the collagen in bone matrix more calcifiable In silicon deficiency, bone collagen formation is depressed. Silicon supplementation has been shown to reduce bone resorption & increases bone formation in an animal model of postmenopausal osteoporosis. In osteoporotic postmenopausal women, supplementation
with monomethyl trisilanol has been shown to increase bone volume and femur and lumbar bone density as well as hip bone density. Horsetail is the highest know plant source of silicon. Silicon can make up to 25% of the dry weight of this plant. Clinical studies in Europe show that incidence of osteoporosis is greatly reduced when some horsetail is added to the diet and fractured bones heal much more quickly when horsetail is taken. So other than horsetail, what are good food sources of Silicon? Natural levels of silicon are much higher in plant foods than in meat or dairy. Certain plants (generally monocotyledons) such as cereal grains, grasses, horsetail and some herbs are known as silicon accumulators. They specifically take up silicon from soil, and accumulate 1020 times the silicon compared with non-accumulating plants (dicotyledons) such as legumes, using it to confer strength and rigidity to their stalks & seed coats. Thus, silicon is highest in the fibrous sections of these foods. For example, rice bran (seed coats) are very high in silicon. The skins of vegetables, that are normally peeled away, are also high in silicon – so don’t peel your veggies. Other foods such as dried fruits and green beans are also good sources. So please, add some horsetail herb and high silicon foods to your diet. They’re a great insurance policy against and a treatment option for, osteoporosis.

IN THE NEWS
Update: Blaxland Crossing Bearing Replacement Project Wollondilly Shire Council would like to advise of a delay in awarding the contract for the Blaxland Crossing Bridge Bearing Replacement Project. The delay to awarding the contract is approximately 1 month. This is because Council are continuing to clarify some technical details and seek approval from key stakeholders involved in the project. There are a number of key stakeholders that have infrastructure running through the bridge. We require these stakeholders to provide approval of the works before we can commit to a contract. This has been a lengthy process and is nearing completion. We have recently undertaken a full structural assessment of the bridge and confirmed that the current permit system with loading and speed restrictions remains suitable. Permits for vehicles over 38T up to 55T are continuing to be issued with an expiry of 3 months (end of July 2017). The permit system will then be reviewed with respect to progress of the remedial works and structural condition of the bridge. More information can be found on Council’s website http:// www.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au/planning-and-development/ roads/current-infrastructure-projects/
Pensioner Concession Cards To Be Reinstated Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has announced that access to the Pensioner Concession Card will be restored to 92,300 people nationally - including 554 Hume constituents who lost it under the asset changes in 1 January 2017. This reinstatement comes after changes were announced by the Turnbull Government in the Federal Budget last month. Mr Taylor said that after the legislation passes both houses, those former part-pensioners who lost their Card in January will be entitled to have it back. “About 92,300 people across the country and 554 people in Hume will be eligible to receive the Card and it will be automatically reissued without an income or assets test,” he said. “This will support former pensioners to regain access to discounts and concessions offered by the states and territories and private providers.” The Card will also be reissued to about 3600 Department of Veterans’ Affairs payment recipients. These people will also still retain the Commonwealth Seniors Health Card to receive the Energy Supplement. Under other Budget announcements the Government will also be offering aged pensioners and disability support pensioners a one-off payment by June 30 to help with energy bills. “Singles will get $75 and couples $125 this Winter to give them a helping hand with the cost of electricity and heating,” Mr Taylor said. For more information on these changes visit the Department of Human Services at https://www.humanservices.gov.au

Adopt a Friend for Life! Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 3 lovely kittens ready for adoption now! The kittens are 3 months old. There are 2 female tortoiseshell colour and 1 ginger male. They have medium long coats. They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including; providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit. Check out our website for more information www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Last month, I had the privilege of attending the first meeting of the Forum on Western Sydney Airport, the meeting was opened by the Minister for Urban Infrastructure, the Hon Paul Fletcher MP. The meeting was chaired by Professor Peter Shergold AC and it included a bus trip to the Airport site. Patrick from the Luddenham Progress Association has put together a video showing take off, landings and the actual runway, it can be viewed on the Luddenham Progress Association Facebook page. It is very interesting to watch. Congratulations to Jean & Artie Willmington for another successful Cuppa for Cancer held in the Progress Hall on Thursday 25th May, once again a big turnout with lots of lovely homemade treats, I will let you know next month how much money was raised. Many years ago a bright, bubbly, vibrant, caring girl stepped into my life. At that point I didn’t realise how much she would impact and inspire me and all those she met. Hayley Rogers moved to Luddenham in 2001 with her Mum Janelle, Dad Garry and Sister Emma. Since moving to Luddenham they all got involved in the Luddenham Community in many ways. Hayley from an early age was a junior member of the Luddenham Show Society and then became a member, her father Garry still Vice President to this day. Hayley was never a normal young adult; at the age of 16 she was diagnosed with virus induced dilated cardiomyopathy, since then it’s been a long journey leading her to have a heart
transplant in December 2014. Since then Hayley has faced many challenges; and overcome more than what a human would experience in a lifetime. It saddens my heart to say that on the 27th of April we lost this special beautiful human and it brings great sadness to the community of Luddenham. Hayley embraced the Luddenham community and was always willing to lend a helping hand. I know that she is dancing with the angels and looking down on us all. Fly high beautiful angel. A flower memorial was commenced in front of the Hall with lots of tributes being left. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@ bigpond.com we all need to work together to get the best results for the new Luddenham.

Barnesy Rocks Fernhill Last month, Fernhill Estate played host to a rock concert featuring Jimmy Barnes, Jon Stevens, Diesel and special guests, with approximately 4,700 music fans in attendance for the amazing event. “Without question, the highlight was bringing three of Australia’s musical icons to our collective doorsteps, and underlines the cultural growth that Western Sydney is experiencingâ€? said Tom Lawson, CEO, Fernhill Estate. Jimmy Barnes belted out his familiar solo and Cold Chisel songs that left the crowd excited and wanting more from the popular musician. The night was a great success. “Organising any large scale event, always comes with challenges, and added to that was the fact it was our first music concert. However, the project team was exceptional, as was all the support from the local community. We were delighted with the overall resultâ€? finished Tom. ď śď€ Jimmy Barnes in full cry | Image: Australian Press Agency

Welcome to June! This month's publication brings you a whole host of wonderful articles, for locals, by locals, about locals. Like many of you before us, we are currently renovating our home. Last month saw us de-clutter at a grand scale and give the nod of approval for work to begin on our first stage of works, Bathroom, Kitchen, and Pool. While I am very excited to be dabbling in a bit of creative design around the home, all I can think of is that we'll be bathing in a portable shower during the bitter cold month of June. Who's idea was this anyway? "Be silly, Be fun, Be different, Be crazy, Be You. Life is too short to be anything else". For now, sit back and warm your toes by the heater and enjoy your Community News.
