Nicholas Carves His Name in Snowboarding Silverdale may be hundreds of kilometres from the snowfields of Australia, but it hasn’t stopped local resident Nicholas Masjuk from excelling in the sport of snowboarding and being selected to represent Australia at the Asian Winter Games, held last month in Sapporo in Japan. “Competing at the Asian Winter Games was definitely one of the greatest experiences I have ever been a part of. Being able to go to Japan and compete for Australia was a great honour. I have to say a massive thanks to the Australian Olympic Committee for selecting me, Ski and Snowboard Australia for recommending my selection, the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia, my sponsors and teammates Millie and Christian. Especially to my parents, for being there every step of my journey” said Nicholas. Nicholas currently trains at Steamboat Springs in Colorado in the USA, where he is also on the Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club Pro-Am team. He trains 5 days a week on snow, training on a race course and 3 days a week in the gym after completing snow training. In Australia, he trains mainly at Thredbo, venturing to Mount Buller last year. The sacrifices that both Nicholas and his family have made have contributed to his success in the sport. “You have to be committed.  Nicholas at home on the snow| Image: Rick Masjuk Property Management Services. s. Innovative Lab at Penrith’s Sydney Science Park a First for Nation

CSIRO, in partnership with property developers Celestino, will establish an innovative Urban Living Lab at the Sydney Science Park at Luddenham. The lab, a first for the nation, will host Australian and international innovators as they create and test their inventions in the Sydney Science Park’s unique urban development. Mayor of Penrith John Thain welcomed the new partnership. The $5 billion Sydney Science Park, upon completion, will employ over 12,000 staff. It will also educate 10,000 students in key scientific and technological disciplines and provide more than 3000 homes. “The creation of the CSIRO Urban Living Lab embodies the innovative and progressive direction Celestino has set for the Sydney Science Park - located within the Penrith LGA, Cr Thain said. “The partnership is a very welcome announcement. The Urban Living Lab fits with Council’s vision to not just build Penrith as a city of the future, but to reap benefits for communities well beyond our own boundaries. Assistant Minister for Science Craig Laundy MP, who launched

the lab, said the new initiative would deliver significant urban, environmental and innovative outcomes for the region and beyond. “The Urban Living Lab initiative offers a new way for researchers, industry, community and government to coinnovate and provide a place to address a range of challenges facing the urban sector, Minister Laundy said. “It’s great to see CSIRO engaging in this public-private collaboration which will not only tackle important issues for our cities, but also provide a boost to the local economy with jobs and opportunities for STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) students. Chairman of the Western Sydney Leadership Dialogue, Christopher Brown AM, said the CSIRO’s decision to base their lab at Sydney Science Park reinforced the region’s emergence as a leader in innovation, research and technology. “This partnership between Sydney Science Park and CSIRO is another positive step towards the ongoing development of Western Sydney’s science and innovation sector, Mr Brown said.

Following Jesus – Radical Living It is not uncommon for some people to think that being a Christian is not for them because they suppose it has nothing to say to their life. Quite often, TV or movie stereo types and exaggerations paint a picture of Christians as weaklings or wimps. Some will have a picture of Christianity as being old fashioned, unadventurous, conservative or old school. Still others assume the Christian life is not practical or that being a Christian has nothing to say about real, day to day life. With this way of thinking, no wonder some imagine becoming a Christian as beneath them or irrelevant. Yet, the very opposite is true!!! Each Sunday morning throughout March, and leading up to Easter, in the Mulgoa Anglican Parish we will be looking at what the Bible’s book of Luke says about following Jesus. Luke tells us he wrote so we could “know the certainty of the things taught” about Jesus. Jesus came into our world to offer you and I a great salvation, a fresh start and new life with the God who loves and cares for us. Luke goes onto show that following Jesus is about living in a trusting relationship with God. It is about having a new set of values and priorities, learning not to be anxious or worry about what we eat or drink or wear but focusing on eternal things, not things here today and gone tomorrow. It is about caring for those

in need. It is about turning away from greed. It is about humility, forgiveness, thankfulness, persistence, generosity, service. This is radical living! Imagine how different our world would be if people lived like this? It would be as if a revolution had taken place, but a revolution for good and not for harm. Isn’t this exactly what our world needs? Isn’t this exactly what your life needs? Radical, revolutionary, transformed living. Get to know Jesus because he is at the centre of the revolution! To find out more give me a call on 4733 1635 or simply turn up on Sunday – we would love to see you! Rev John Lavender

WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Pastor’s Corner Death is not something we like to talk about, yet all of us are affected, at some point in our lives, through the loss of a loved one or a friend. My cousin Meryl recently passed away, just a few months after being diagnosed with an aggressive form of Cancer. As I have thought about Meryl, memories of her flood back; times spent at so many family functions that celebrated birthdays, Christmas, weddings, funerals and family get togethers. When I last saw Meryl, she was optimistic that the intensive chemotherapy would restore her to good health. However, there was too, a quiet resolve and trust in God. Meryl knew that Jesus was Saviour and Lord of her life, and she believed in what Jesus had promised his disciples: “Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God; trust also in me. In my Father’s house are many rooms; if it were not so I would have told you. I am going there to prepare a place for you. (John 14). Meryl now rests in that place; she now has healing and peace, and is at home with Jesus. For those of us who knew her and loved her, we remain; we grieve that she has gone; and we will miss those times of gathering together. Meryl’s death, raises again the question for me, am I ready to die? Have you asked yourself that same question; How prepared are you to face death? You too, can have peace about your future. Peace comes from a personal faith in Jesus Christ, asking him to be the Lord of your life. It is not about how many good things you do in life, because our sins, things we do wrong, wrong attitudes, even harsh words separate us from God’s love.

Through seeking forgiveness, and asking Jesus to be the Lord of our life, we find peace and our relationship with God is restored. If you would like to discuss these matters, please contact me, I would be happy to have a confidential discussion with you. God Bless, Lyndon

Jake Makes International League Debut for Malta

Rugby

The Warragamba Senior Wombats Club now have an International Rugby League player in their ranks, with local boy Jake Webster making his debut for the Malta Rugby League (MRL) Team last month. Jake was selected to represent the Maltese team in an International game against the Philippines, held at Cabramatta Stadium. This was Jake’s first call up in the senior’s side, with Malta defeating the Philippines 44-26 in an entertaining game in front of a huge crowd. Jake has been part of the Maltese Heritage Rugby League Academy since the age of 15, alongside other Warragamba players, where he gained his first cap in the Under 16’s Harmony Cup. He was later selected to play in the Under 18’s against Italy and Camden, two years later at 17. Since then, Jake was also chosen to play in Thailand in a World Cup Qualifier, however, the game was unfortunately cancelled due to the untimely death of their King and has been rescheduled for November later this year. He has spent most of his football career at the local Warragamba club, from the age of 8. His proud Maltese heritage comes from his Grandmother on his Mother’s side and he is honoured to pull on the Malta jersey. David Axisa, the Manager of the Maltese side, is currently organising an emerging nations competition, combining the teams that don’t make the World Cup. This competition will be held at the end of the year over a three-week period, involving 24 countries and Jake is working towards being a part of the Maltese emerging nations side.  Jake in action for Malta| Image Supplied

Unfamiliar Water Activities

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com One of the best lessons that I teach at school, is the difference between Aggressive, Assertive, and Passive. This is such a good lesson for children to learn. People who adopt a particular style of relating in childhood tend to take that style into adulthood. They are often not aware of their responses and this can cause difficulties in their relationships. Aggressive is like being a Cranky Crocodile. Cranky Crocodiles are snappy and mean. They only think of themselves. They push other people around. They fly off the handle. Other kids don’t want to play with them. Passive is like being a timid Mouse. A timid Mouse is withdrawn. He does not stand up for himself, and lets others push him around. He then gets resentful and angry, but turns it in on himself. Assertive children stand up for themselves in a kind way. They balance their own needs with the needs of others, and try to find a happy medium. They use their calming down strategies and their problem solving skills. For Assertive, I ask children to conjure up their own image; something that they think is Cool, Calm, and Confident. Assertive kids also use “I Messages” to let other people know how they feel and what they would like. At school, we use a stem statement to help the students remember how to do “I Messages” … “When you __________, I feel __________. Would you please __________?” We also teach the children that just because they use their I Messages, it doesn’t mean the other person will do as they ask. It’s just a better way of communicating. In case you are wondering – yes, even young children do this very well (often better than the older children). Our kindergarten children were using it within a few weeks of learning it with the teacher reinforcing it wherever she could. If you want a poster for the fridge for this skill, jump on to the Hands, Hearts, and Minds blog https://handsheartsminds. wordpress.com/ Come back next month for another fabulous skill to teach your kids. Nicholas’ goals are to represent Australia and compete at the Winter Olympic Games and be ranked in the top 10 in the world in snowboarding. His aim now is to compete on the World Cup circuit and improve his riding.

Children who regularly attend lessons become very familiar with their environment, the warm clear water, the line on the bottom of the pool, a teacher who is alert and aware of the child’s limits and expectations; and confidence with the pool’s edge. Similar could be said for children who regularly swim in a backyard pool supervised by parents. They will display this by always entering the pool the same way. They might have a place they are confident with jumping in and climbing out of. In other areas of the pool like the deeper end they may also show reluctance. When you take your family to an unfamiliar water activity here are a few things to consider: • Your child performs best when they are relaxed and anxiety or panic will not be helpful. • The water may be cold, salty or murky and difficult to stand up in as the floor may be unstable. • There may be varying levels of depth. • Varying weather conditions. When planning your next family fun day at an unfamiliar water space, be prepared to get wet. Your supervision skills will be heightened if you’re in the water with your child. You will understand the sensory experience of cold water, salty water and pressure of waves or an unstable standing surface. This will help you to best support and comprehend for your child’s experience. Regular attendance at swimming lessons combined with swimming with mum or dad will help improve the child’s confidence and fitness as well as help parents to understand their child’s limits. This approach will help create a positive water experience for a safe family day out.

Celebrating Women We carry babies, multi task and hold some of the most prestigious, high paying career roles than some men, so why shouldn’t we celebrate International Women’s Day? Here we are in 2017 and women are stronger, kicking goals and are more confident than ever, but this hasn’t always been the case. There has always been a struggle for equality, particularly within the work force. With determination, persistence and a little rallying, equality is evident when segmenting men and women in both daily and professional tasks. However, still to this day, there is a gap with men getting paid more in some industries. “Each one of us - with women, men and non-binary people joining forces - can be a leader within our own spheres of influence by taking bold pragmatic action to accelerate gender parity. Through purposeful collaboration, we can help women advance and unleash the limitless potential offered to economies the world over. - www.internationalwomensday.com International Women's Day on March 8th is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. This year’s theme is focused around #BeBoldForChange - to help forge a better working world - a more gender inclusive world. It all started in the early 1900’s when the Suffragettes forged purposeful action for equality. It was the Suffragettes who started International Women's Day, with the first officially named "International Women's Day" event held in 1911. Many events are held around Sydney in the month or March celebrating International Women’s Day. Let us recognize, honour and celebrate the important and impressive achievements of women globally.

HEALTH MATTERS

Calcium For Bones – How Much Do I Need & Where From? The Australian guidelines specify a calcium intake of 1000mg/ day for most adults. So where do you get it??? ‌. From healthy foods, of course! Why? Because getting calcium into bones is a complicated game requiring many different players. Obviously, calcium first needs to be in our foods in reasonable quantities. But then it needs to be extracted from these foods by proper digestion, then absorbed, assimilated into bone (and cells), and finally kept out of arteries & soft tissues. Only ‘healthy foods’ provide a balanced source of - not only calcium, but all of the ancillary nutrients that facilitate calcium’s proper utilisation. These include (but are not limited to) vitamins A, B2, B6, B9 & B12, C, D, E & K, & minerals potassium, magnesium, boron, copper, zinc, strontium, and iron. In short‌ incorporating calcium is really about eating a highly varied low calorie nutrient dense diet! So which foods? Well we are all familiar with the high calcium foods of industry promotional campaigns – milk & cheese! But this is a very one dimensional marketing driven view. It is true that these are good sources of calcium but while cheese is almost unsurpassable as a calcium source, it is extremely high in calories. When it comes to milk, the fact is that there are many foods that are excellent (indeed better) sources of calcium, both in terms of total calcium content and absorbability. These include foods such as sardines, winged beans, carob, tahini, wild

caught pink & red salmon, almonds, parsley, dried figs, spinach, natural yogurt, rhubarb, mussels, snapper, brazil nuts, oysters, mustard cabbage & kale, all better calcium sources than milk! Many dark green leafy vegetables have relatively high calcium content (although some such as spinach and rhubarb are high in calcium oxalates which is a little harder to absorb). Cruciferous vegetables such as kale, bok-choy, broccoli, cabbage etc. are green yet essentially oxalate free, and have much calcium and plenty of the vitamins & minerals to help utilise it. Experiments show that our ability to get calcium from these foods is as good if not better than from milk. Western folk just don’t eat enough (or sometimes any) of these vegetables daily. Having said all this‌ research shows that Thai men & women have calcium intakes between 220-361mg per day. They consume few milk products and calcium comes mainly from vegetables, meat & fish (eaten bones & all). This calcium intake is significantly lower than the 1000 mg/d recommended by our health authorities. Yet the Thai men and women over 50 (and Malaysians with similarly low intakes) have age-adjusted rates of hip fractures almost 2 times lower than more westernised Asians in Hong Kong, Singapore, and U.S. Whites. So, you can now see that whether you get a fracture or not is much less about the calcium you get and more about your overall diet & lifestyle habits!

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington

Well the 113th Annual Luddenham Show has come and gone, once again the show was affected by weather with a storm and showers coming through on the Saturday afternoon keeping some of the spectators away, Sunday’s weather was much better. This year had some great new entertainment including the V8 Utes as well as a Demolition Derby. We also broke a record with over sixty bottles of Homebrew entering the homebrew section. The Official Party consisted of Clr John Thain Mayor of Penrith, Tanya Davies MP Member for Mulgoa- Minister for Mental Health, Minister for Women & Minister for Ageing, The Hon Angus Taylor MP Member for Hume - Assistant Minister for Cities and Digital Transformation, Wayne Willmington President & Hayley Wood Secretary/ Treasurer of Luddenham Show Society and Clr Ross Fowler OAM. Angus Taylor Officially opened the Show (pic attached). A bit of a shock on Valentine’s Day losing our water supply for over 12 hours and the NBN has now been switched on in Luddenham. Confirmation that an application for an 11-storey resort

hotel with lagoon pool and floating bar has been flagged for Luddenham. The 275-room hotel would be located within the Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club, and down the road from Celestino’s new $5 billion Sydney Science Park. “The lagoon pool will be the centrepiece — it will have a beach like at Wet’n’Wild,” Twin Creeks chief executive Grant Martin said. He said visitors will be able to swim under a floating bar and eat in an outdoor dining area “which straddles the pool”. All this is coming to Luddenham. The Australian Federal Government will retain responsibility for delivering the airspace and flight path design for the Stage 1 development (a single runway) of the Western Sydney Airport. The Government has announced the Forum on Western Sydney Airport (FOWSA) will be the main community consultation group on the Western Sydney Airport project for the flight path design process. FOWSA will play an important role in this process and will ensure the views of the community are taken into account. Their function and role will be key conditions in the Western Sydney Airport Plan. The function of FOWSA will be to promote informed and responsive engagement between the community and representatives of an Expert Steering Group to be led by the Department of Infrastructure and Regional Development. It will be the forum where community members and organisations can raise issues and express opinions regarding the planning and development of the Western Sydney Airport, in particular the airspace and flight path design process. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@ bigpond.com we all need to work together to get the best results for the new Luddenham.  Luddenham Show Official Opening | Image Supplied

Clean Up Australia Day - Registrations Open For Warragamba/Silverdale Registering a local site for Clean Up Australia Day is the perfect way to get rid of rubbish that is accumulating on neighbourhood streets and beaches, in parks, bushland and waterways. Because when the rubbish is gone – nature can carry on. This is exactly what the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre had in mind when they scheduled their Clean Up Australia Day for Friday 10 March 2017. In partnership with Wollondilly Shire Council, this clean-up is part of a broader litter program called “Warragamba is our Home. This program has enabled the Centre and Council to provide signage and a range of resources, such as car tidy bags to the local community. Wollondilly Shire Council’s Manager Environmental Services Brad Staggs said “Anyone who would like to join the clean-up event at Warragamba is encouraged to register through the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre. The clean-up will take place around Production Ave and Farnsworth Ave, Warragamba. All gloves, bags, volunteer tee shirts and caps will be provided to volunteers. Council currently have resources that community members can access to combat litter, such as car tidy bags. Residents can

collect bags at Councils Administration Building’s Customer Services Counter. To report littering from vehicles please go to www. epa.nsw.gov.au/heytosser Following the clean-up there will be a free lunch.

And there it is, March! Almost a quarter of the year gone, just like that! I lose count of how many times I get told that readers can't wait for their copy of the Gazette. It is very humbling to know, that our readers find so much joy amongst these pages. Their reasons differ; some like to have details of local businesses at their fingertips; others love the localised stories; and I must admit.... MANY simply cannot wait for this month's recipe! I am told, as soon as it arrives, the recipe is swiftly removed from the paper and placed on the fridge! This month's recipe is sure to please! I won't spoil it for you, have a sneaky peek at page 12 for all the juicy details! "Don't let the silly little things steal all your happiness" For now, sit back with a cuppa in hand and enjoy (if for only a brief moment) your Community News.
