Camille Nominated to be the New Bondi Vet There is some exciting news in the local community with Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital’s Owner and Veterinarian, Dr Camille Brandt, being nominated to be the next Bondi Vet recently by her clients. The popular Veterinarian’s video application to be the next Bondi Vet is now on the Bondi Vet website (www.bondivet.com. au) and Facebook page (www.facebook.com/bondivetofficial). It can also be viewed on Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital’s new Facebook page (www.facebook.com/orchardhillsvethospital). To get behind and support Dr Brandt, the local community can ‘like’ her application video on the Bondi Vet website or add a message to the Bondi Vet website or Facebook page. Dr Brandt, who has been practicing for 16 years and estimates to have seen over 40,000 patients, has already received support for her nomination, “There are heaps of lovely messages from my clients on the Bondi Vet website about the application video. I can work out who they are from the photos of their pets and their manner of writing. It is so rewarding to wear your heart on your sleeve, have your clients recognise this and repay you with their lovely messages” she said. Dr Brandt’s love of animals also extends to her own furry friends, Dr Camille Brandt (left) with Dr Chris Brown, the original Bondi Vet (right) | Image Supplied Property Management Services. s. Restoring an Icon

For the last 6 months, Settlers Mulgoa has been through a total renovation. Owners Craig and Sophie Mason and their team have been working tirelessly around the clock to rebuild and restore the natural beauty of this Heritage building and local icon. The hard working team have rebuilt the entire floor, using recycled kauri pine flooring that would have been true to the period of the building. They have also restored some of the original flooring at the front of the building that was restorable. They have upgraded and replaced electrical wiring and replaced all the lighting with fixers from the period. A new septic system and septic tanks have been installed as well as new plumbing

throughout the building. The bathrooms have been upgraded with new toilets, vanities, wall covers and a change table has now been installed. A new back stair way has been built with an enclosed verandah. The front timber posts that support the building have been replaced with hard wood posts and a new timber deck has been built. The kitchen has been upgraded with new equipment and a grease trap. A new internal fit out now includes a counter and bar to fit the period. The yards have also been levied, new turf has been laid and a landscape plan has been put into place. “The list is endless with the work that has been done. We have lost count of the hours that have been put into the new Settlers Mulgoaâ€? said Owner Craig Mason. With most of the work now done to the building, the makeover of the carpark will include disabled access from the carpark to the building. The biggest challenges throughout the renovation for the team have included the fact that Settlers is a Heritage building and that they are working with the unknown. The rain that was had for weeks and weeks have also held them up. “The most enjoyable part about the renovations would have to be seeing the end result. Standing back and watching it come aliveâ€? said Craig. When quizzed about the planned opening date for Settlers Mulgoa, Craig said with excitement “soon, very soon. Yes we are close!â€? ď ˛ď€ Settlers Mulgoa is opening soon | Image Supplied

The Best Book to Read Not many of you will have heard of Voltaire. Voltaire was a French philosopher, historian and writer who lived in France in the 1700’s. Voltaire was also an atheist, that is, someone who didn’t believe in God. In fact, in a lot of his writing Voltaire was extremely critical of the Bible. At one time he made this very bold statement: “One hundred years from today the Bible will be a forgotten book.” Today, everyone has forgotten that quote! And while many people have never heard of Voltaire, the Bible continues to be among the best selling books of all time. Why? What is it about the Bible that makes it the most read, most published, most translated book in the world? And more importantly, the one book that transforms and deeply impacts the lives of those who apply what it says? What I find so encouraging is that at our Church as people read ad the Bible for themselves, as they take an honest look at whatt it al it says they are stunned by how relevant and by how practical s” to is. They are pleasantly surprised to find that the Bible “speaks” them about the real issues of life. At Mulgoa Anglican Church we would love for you to be able o say. to experience the joy and wonder of what the Bible has to ill Starting Sunday 14th May in our Sunday Sermon Series we will

According to the Cancer Council, 1 in 2 Australians will be diagnosed with cancer before the age of 85. Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea raises money for vital research, prevention programs, advocacy and support services for those people who are affected by cancer. The Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre is holding their annual Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea on 26th May at 10:30 am. Refreshments will include finger foods, coffee and tea for a minimum gold coin donation. Helena Winter from the Community Development Team said they are expecting a good crowd of people as they usually do each year. Last year they raised around $300 for cancer research. She added that it’s always a very enjoyable morning for everyone and is attended by people of all ages from families to seniors. “We all sit down, have some morning tea and a chat and make our donations”. Cancer Council Australia reports that Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea is their most popular fundraising event. In Australia, it is the most successful and largest event of its kind. Last year, a whopping $11.9 million was raised all around the country to help beat cancer. This year they are hoping to increase that amount to over $13 million through more community involvement to help save more lives. Hosting or attending a morning tea is a fun, rewarding and an easy way to help contribute to the cause. The Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre is located at the corner of Weir Road and Fourteenth Street in Warragamba. To RSVP or for more information please contact them on 4774 1273.

Pastor’s Corner Recently I watched a movie called “Miracles from Heaven, based on the true story of a ten year old girl named Anna Beam, who has a rare and incurable disease. Anna’s mother Christy becomes a ferocious advocate for her daughter’s healing, as she searches for a solution. After Anna has a freak accident, an extraordinary miracle takes place and Anna is healed. The medical specialists cannot explain how this happened; Anna attributes her healing to a miracle from God. The Bible is full of stories about miracles. Two of Jesus’ disciples were heading to the temple to pray, as they approached the outer gates. A man, who had been crippled since birth, was sitting at a gate to the temple, begging for money. As Peter and John approached, he called out to them, hoping that they would give him a coin. Peter’s response surprises the man, he says: “Silver or gold I do not have, but what I have I give to you. In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk. Peter took hold of the man’s right hand and helped him to his feet. Instantly the man’s feet and ankles became strong. He jumped up to his feet and began to walk. Then he went into the temple courts, walking and jumping, and praising God. I would have liked to have witnessed that man’s reaction. The most obvious sign we see of miracles is in the birth and life of a child. My youngest grandchild recently just turned one; it seems just a short time ago, that we were anxiously waiting his birth. This little boy, is now standing and taking his first steps, words are not yet decipherable, but he appears to have much to say to us. The miracle of birth is part of God’s miraculous plan.

In Genesis 1:27 it says “So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them. My prayer is that you will know and understand that you were created in God’s image. God Bless, Lyndon

New Principal for Mulgoa Public School Mulgoa Public School has announced that, through the merit selection process, Mrs Justine Blackley will be the new permanent Principal, officially beginning in term 2 this year. Mrs Blackley has been a teacher for 22 years. She has taught in a number of schools as well as working as a Mathematics Consultant for the Department of Education. She has been a teacher at Mulgoa for 7 years. “As Mulgoa is a small school, the Principal role is one of a teaching Principal. I am on class 3 days a week and have 2 days off class for administration. I teach the 5/6 class and enjoy the challenges of the dual role. The students at Mulgoa are friendly, kind, well-mannered and engaged learners. As Principal, I get to share these amazing students with their teachers. I am fortunate to lead staff that are dynamic and passionate about small schools and public education” said Mrs Blackley. “As a long serving teacher at Mulgoa I have developed connections with our parents and community. I have enjoyed working with our parents on projects that will enhance our school”. Mulgoa Public School has a rich tradition of providing opportunities for all our students to reach their potential. It is my goal as Principal to continue to provide quality education to all students. It is my aim to work with our parents and community to extend learning beyond the classroom walls and for our students to see their place in our global community” Mrs

Blackley explained. Working in the local community is something that Mrs Blackley enjoys; “Mulgoa has such a rich history that is evident in our school as well as the local area. The community of Mulgoa are warm and caring and genuinely care for its residents. Many of our students have parents and grandparents that attended our school. Not many schools can boast that! It is unique to find such a geographically beautiful village and community minded village so close to a large urban area. As you drive towards Mulgoa you truly feel you are leaving the ‘big city’ behind. All visitors to our beautiful school comment on the ‘feel’ and beauty of the school and its local surrounds. We are blessed to spend each day in such a wonderful school!”  Principal, Mrs Justine Blackley | Image: www.facebook.com/ mulgoapublicschool

Family is Everything

WHAT’S COOKING

No-Bake Mixed Berry Pie

Ingredients 10 graham crackers ½ cup butter, melted 8 ounces cream cheese, softened ¼ cup maple syrup 1 cup blueberries 1 cup strawberries, sliced 4 tablespoons water 2 tablespoons lemon juice, about half a lemon ¼ cup sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch

m To Muox with x

Method 1. Place graham crackers in a plastic bag and crush them into fine crumbs using a rolling pin. Alternatively, a food processor can be used to crush the crackers. 2. Pour the graham cracker crumbs into a medium bowl with the melted butter. 3. Mix until the crumbs take on the character of a coarse, wet sand. 4. Pour the crumbs into a 9-inch pie dish. Press the crumb firmly into the dish, making sure to coat the bottom and sides of the dish evenly. Once the crust has been formed, place the pie dish into the refrigerator to firm up. 5. In a medium-sized bowl, whisk together cream cheese and maple syrup. Once combined, pour the mixture into pie crust and return it to refrigerator to chill. 6. Meanwhile, add half of the blueberries and strawberries to a saucepan over medium heat. Add 2 tablespoons of water, lemon juice, and sugar. 7. Cook for 2-4 minutes or until sugar is dissolved and berries begin to expel their juice, creating a loose, deep-red mixture. 8. In a small bowl or ramekin, mix cornstarch and remaining 2 tablespoons of water into a smooth paste. Add the cornstarch mixture to the berries and cook for an additional 2 minutes, until the filling thickens. Remove from heat and set aside. 9. Allow the mixture to cool for 5 minutes. 10. Remove the chilled pie crust with the cream cheese layer from the refrigerator. Take the remaining blueberries and strawberries and evenly distribute them over the top of the cream cheese layer. 11. Next, pour the cooked berry mixture over the top of the fresh fruit and cream cheese, filling in the rest of the pie crust. Spread the filling evenly. 12. Chill the pie completely in the refrigerator for 1.5-2 hours before serving. 13. Enjoy! For many mums across Australia, running a household and working can be challenging. These challenges can often not be made easier without the support of your family, as local mum and business owner Sue Mitchell has proven. “I started my business Essential Bodyworks Massage Therapy in 2009, 8 years ago. This was when I finished studying for 2 years to get my Diploma of Remedial Massage” explained Sue. The thought of starting a business with a family is daunting, but it can be achieved; “It was very helpful that my spouse worked night shift when I started the business. With his much needed support, he was able to assist with school pick-ups and drop-offs. When you are slowly starting out with a new business, I was fortunate to have the flexibility to work around my family’s needs. I’m thankful for this”. Over time, this same flexibility meant that Sue could also work around the kid’s school activities and still enjoy the conversation and interaction of working with adults. She is now looking forward to setting up a home business in the future. When it comes to being a mum and wanting to start your own business, Sue’s advice is short and simple, “have the support of your family”. To all the local mums, we say thank you and hope you enjoy your Mother’s Day. Support of family is key, Sue Mitchell | Image Supplied

Peer Pressure It used to be something that we worried about with teens. But it seems that younger children need to learn how to deal with peer pressure these days. There is a lot of peer conflict in primary school and sometimes kids get caught up in stuff that they didn’t really anticipate and know how to manage. For example, a child thinks it would be a good idea to hide someone else’s lunch bag. Maybe just for a laugh, to annoy that kid, or to make him angry. This is a simple example. It seems like a bit of a lark. But it also may be one act in a stream of events targeting one particular child, in which case it would be bullying. The protagonist gets other kids involved in the scheme. Some of those kids may think it’s a good idea, but some might not and they don’t know how to say ‘no’ without fear of ridicule or losing the friendship. Peer pressure is when your friends or other kids your age try to get you to do something that you don’t want to do. It is very hard to say ‘no’ to your friends, and it sometimes takes a lot of courage. The steps in dealing with peer pressure are: 1. Calm down, using calming down strategies (belly breathing, talking ourselves through it, counting backwards, thinking calming thoughts); 2. Think the problem through; 3. Be cool, calm, and confident, and use an “I statement’ to let the other people know what you think in a polite way; 4. Tell the other kids why you don’t think it’s a good idea; 5. Suggest something else to do for fun. This can be hard for kids to do. They may need some support from a trusted adult to help walk them through it. Kids also need to know who they can go to if the situation is dangerous or doesn’t stop. Image | www.pexels.com

Camille Nominated to be the New Bondi Vet Pony the Great Dane/Bull Mastiff, Leo the Golden Labrador and two pet sheep, which enjoy going for walks with the dogs every morning. When asked what she enjoys most about having her own veterinary practice, Camille said; “I used to work as an employed veterinarian, however since owning my own business, I actually don’t work, even though I am at work for 70 hours a week, 7 days a week. The difference for me is that as an employer, I can work as hard as I like to build my business the way that I want. Since purchasing the veterinary hospital 7 years ago, I have tripled the business and created 9 new jobs! “The best part about working in the local community is getting to know everyone. The clientele are linked together by neighbours, friends and family, and it is amazing how many clients know of other clients. It is amazing what a private human confessional a consultation for a pet is. I get to know about people’s lives, and share their journey through life she added. What does Camille have to be the next Bondi Vet? “I am open to adventure! I am straight forward, honest and I truly love animals. Come on and show your support for a local business owner who could very well be the next Bondi Vet, “I grew up in the Blue Mountains, went to Mount Riverview Primary School, Springwood Primary School and Springwood High School. So I am a local!

Great Night for a Movie Under the Stars The Wallacia Public School P&C Movie Night was held last month and the audience was treated to Zootopia on the big screen, after many weeks of rain delaying this. There were clear blue skies leading into the night and you could not have written the script any better with the weather. There was popcorn, cold drinks, steak sandwiches and of course a cake stall. The organisers of the event would like to thank all the parents, grandparents and anyone else who baked for the night, as well as all the volunteers. The P&C were extremely impressed with the amount of support from the students and their families, but also with the support of the local community. A fun night was had by all with all the little eyes glued to the screen watching Zootopia as soon as the movie began. HEALTH MATTERS

Importantly, they would like to thank all the businesses that sponsored the night and made it possible. This included: • Major Sponsors: Penrith Home Maker Centre and Wallacia Bowling Club • Platinum Sponsor: Elite Sand and Soil • Gold Sponsors: Century 21, Lower Russell and Farr, Second Pair of Eyes, Wallacia Hotel and Outback Steakhouse Penrith • Silver Sponsors: Cullen’s Concrete, Mulgoa Medical Centre, Little Nero’s Pizza and Pasta, Top Gun Cranes, Chambo’s Bakehouse, Mulgoa Pharmacy, Ultimate Concrete, Mulgoa Valley Bakehouse, District Gazette, Curry Muncher and BP Wallacia.

Does Exercise Improve Bone Density? If So, Which Exercises & Why? The short answer is yes, exercise can improve bone density even in post-menopausal women and older men. The key is selecting the right type of exercise and continuing to do it regularly. Firstly, new bone formation happens at sites of bone stress. Indeed, bone strength improves substantially even with only small changes in bone density (BMD) when bone is added at these sites. To improve bone density requires commitment. A minimum of six months of regular exercise, 3-6 days per week can realize significant bone density benefits. The exercises that really improve strength are high impact exercises such as jumping, rather than simply resistance or aerobic exercise. Here are some examples. 20-year-old women who did 10 x two-legged maximum vertical jumps 8-12 seconds apart, 3 times per week for 6 months showed significantly increased BMD at the femoral neck and lumbar spine, compared to controls. Simple skipping, bounding and depth jumping exercises done 6 days per week for 1 year were effective for reversing bone loss in menopausal women. 5 years of resistance training with weighted vest and an average 51.7 jumps/day, 3 times/wk, from a 20.3-cm-high step, improved femoral neck bone density compared with a control group in postmenopausal woman aged 64.1–69.9 years. Men with prostate cancer that undergo androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) usually lose significant bone mass as testosterone

helps to keep bones strong. A recent 6-month study of men on ADT showed that those who did no special exercise lost 3.2% of lumbar bone density, a second group completing a combination of resistance and aerobic exercise also lost 2.6%, while those who completed a combination of resistance training and the impact loading exercises such as hopping, skipping and jumping exhibited no significant change in bone mineral density over the same time period. Clearly high impact exercises like jumping are highly important for bone density. Why might this be? Well it comes down to something called the piezoelectric effect! The stress of exercise deforms bone collagen molecules causing tiny electrical charges to move from the inside to the outside surface of bone at the site of stress (the piezoelectric effect). This attracts bone-building cells (called osteoblasts) to the site. These cells then deposit more bone (calcium & collagen) on the stressed side of the bone, increasing bone density & strength. This effect is maximised when the loading forces on bone are highest e.g. from high impact exercises. Hopping, skipping and jumping cause the most stress on bones, and so these forms of exercise (rather than simple weight training or aerobic exercise) are the ones you will need to do regularly to build bone. By building-up carefully, and maybe with a little supervision, you’ll be surprised how easy these exercises are to do safely even for older people.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington

I was very humbled last month with The Federal Government announcing me as part of the 22 members of the New Forum on Western Sydney Airport (FOWSA), to be chaired by Professor Peter Shergold AC, FOWSA will be a critical community consultation mechanism in the lead up to the new Western Sydney Airport commencing operations in 2026. Members bring a broad range of skills, expertise and local knowledge and are drawn from diverse locations including Camden, Liverpool, Penrith, Fairfield, and the Blue Mountains. FOWSA’s members include 10 community representatives, 5 representatives nominated by local councils, and members representing other stakeholder groups. “As we develop a project of the scale of Western Sydney Airport, it is critical that the voice of the community is heard loud and clear,” said Minister for Urban Infrastructure, Paul Fletcher. “FOWSA will

meet regularly and its members will be briefed on the many complex issues involved in planning a new airport. “Western Sydney Airport will be a very important facility for Western Sydney, and the community must have a say in its planning and development.” FOWSA will be a key consultation mechanism on issues such as flight path planning. The Airport Plan, which is the formal document granting approval to construct an airport, requires that community views are taken into account when designing final flight paths for Western Sydney Airport. It was good to see the Easter Fair back at the Showground over the Easter period and for the first time the weather was kind, the numbers were up and a lot of good feedback was received. For well over twenty years Jean & Artie Willmington have been involved in running the Luddenham Markets, especially the book & white elephant stall that was held in the Progress Hall. Jean & Artie are retiring from running that stall that has been raising money for the NSW Cancer Council, their last stall will be held on the 6th & 7th of May, THANK YOU both for a job well done. The Markets will continue on the first Saturday of the month at the Uniting Church. Work has now commenced on a 1.4km circuit which will be used for a range of Motorsport purposes at the Luddenham Raceway on Luddenham Road, in conjunction with the existing Go Karts and Paint Ball. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@ bigpond.com. We all need to work together to get the best results for the new Luddenham.  Latest of the Airport showing the realigned roads and airport layout | | Image Supplied

As May has arrived, with it the crisp mornings and cooler nights. I am quite a fan of the freshness that arrives with May. Call me crazy, or keen for a challenge. Like many people before us, we have decided to tackle a 'Block-Style' renovation at our home of 17 years....... heading into Winter! It has been such an interesting introduction to the world of renovating. Currently we are in the 'de-clutter' phase. A case of recycle, re-use or remove. To sift through 17 years of accumulated 'stuff ' brings with it a certain sense of satisfaction as we start to clear it all out. Some items have been given away to friends and family who need it, other items donated to the Church and some have been listed to sell. It clearly demonstrates just how much 'stuff ' one accumulates over a lifetime; and how much of it is really necessary ? "Do the right thing, even when no one is looking, it's called integrity." For now, sit back with a cuppa in hand and enjoy your Community News.
