Farewell To Our Much Loved Vet Twenty two years after opening the Warragamba Veterinary Clinic in 1994, Cheryl Butler has bid farewell to the clinic, closing the much loved local business and retiring. In the years since, Cheryl has seen many changes to the local area. “When I opened the Clinic the area had a much more rural focus. The old Pony Club was still very active, with many of the locals spending a substantial portion of their weekend there. I used to treat farm animals on a regular basis, including horses, cattle, sheep, goats and the occasional pig. I stopped treating livestock because the demand for it fell too low to warrant keeping specialised equipment and drugs” she said. Working closely with the people and community of Warragamba will be something that Cheryl will miss after all these years treating all creatures great and small. “The best part of working in Warragamba has definitely been the wonderful people I have met and worked with. It has been many years since I could walk over to post a letter without having to stop for a chat on the way! It has been amazing to see the regard many people have for their non-human companions” explained Cheryl. Cheryl smiles when contemplating just what the future holds for this country vet, “First, I plan a little travel. After that I will have time to look after my farm more effectively than I have had time to do in the past. When things are quiet, there is always spinning the fibre from my alpacas, pottery  Thank you Cheryl and team at Warragamba Veterinary Clinic Property Management Services. s. Damfest A Huge Success

Once again the weather was perfect for DamFest. The annual event, in its thirteenth year, was as big and exciting as ever. Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre (WSNC) proudly organises this event to showcase the area and give local community and sporting organisations a venue to fundraise on a grand scale. This year, DamFest had around 9,000 visitors and had something for all ages to enjoy. For the young at heart there was a Feathered Friends display with birds of prey and reptiles. Add to this, a Kindi Farm with lots of baby animals and fairies and other characters across the site. Let’s not forget the rides – always a big hit! The Car and Bike Show was a huge draw card for Dads and Mums, with some incredible machines on display. Just like last year, the carpark was packed to capacity again. There were dozens of market stalls and the relatively new swap meet was also welcomed by all. Wollondilly Mayor Judy Hannan was MC for most of the day with newly elected Councillor Matt Gould finishing the event off. State member for Wollondilly Jai Rowell came along for the day and, with Councillor Simon Landow, carried out the WSNC members draw for 30 prizes donated by local businesses. A huge thank you to those businesses that supported the WSNC members draw. Federal MP for Hume Angus Taylor dropped in and presented the winners of the Car and Bike Show with their trophies. The organising committee would like to thank their sponsors, supporters and the dignitaries who helped make the day the huge success it was. Thank you also to all those who took the time to come along and join in the fun. Until next year.......................

A beautiful afternoon of High Tea took place last month at Mulgoa Valley Receptions for a fundraising benefit held for Silverdale’s Nikki Tatum and her fight against Multiple Sclerosis. There were well over 80 people in attendance from near and far which included family, friends, friends of friends, work colleagues and acquaintances. There were also members from the Camden Lions Club present (Nikki’s fundraising sponsor). The hosts, Mulgoa Valley Receptions, were exceptional and bent over backwards to accommodate the event. They enjoyed an afternoon of fine teas, treats and wonderful company in a very pretty setting. Those in attendance were extremely generous and dug deep to contribute on the day, participating in the raffles and games (games required a gold coin donation). Many businesses, organisations and individuals donated prizes and vouchers for a raffle and they thank all those sponsors who helped make the day a success. They gave away many valuable and desirable prize packages and many of the attendees left with an armful of treasures. “The event was well attended and profitable and we raised much needed funds for Nikki’s cause. We are very grateful for everyone’s support in attending the event to begin with, but then to contribute so much on the day was just so very generous. Everybody really got into the fundraising spirit said Erin O’Regan, one of the fundraising organisers. One local, Neville Gilmartin, initiated an auction for the last scone of the day. The lucky bidder was Elly Dunbar (Nikki’s four year old daughter), who got swept up in the excitement of the auction and purchased the scone for $100.00! This was very kindly paid for by Nikki’s relatives. The guest’s tables were littered with notes and coins. They were so thankful for the generosity and good will of all those in attendance on the day. It was a wonderful and emotional experience for all.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA

Looking for Joy It is sad when life becomes so routine that special things, things that deserve celebration, are largely taken for granted. For many people, Christmas has a danger of becoming like that. What I mean is that, every year Christmas makes a big splash in our lives, but then we move on, hardly noticing that it has happened, until next year when we do it all again. And really, it is no surprise some of us feel like this, because it seems as if Christmas decorations and paraphernalia are on sale in the shops earlier and earlier, and it can become a bit of a “ho hum, here we go again” sort of thing. Yet at Mulgoa Anglican Church, we know that the joy of Christmas, the joy of celebrating the coming of Jesus into our world, is always something that should be celebrated, something that should be enjoyed, and something we should make a very big deal about. We know this because in the Bible, God declares to us how Jesus came into our world to give us a fresh start with God and a real, sure hope for the future as we put our faith and trust in Jesus, committing our lives to him. At Mulgoa Anglican, especially at Christmas, we want to share this message of great joy and hope with everyone in Mulgoa and beyond. Mulgoa’s Christmas celebrations kick off with the Christmas

Bents Basin State Conservation Area Re-Opens The campground and picnic areas recently re-opened at Bents Basin State Conservation Area following clean-up work to remove flood debris caused by heavy rain and flood water which lashed the region at the beginning of June this year. National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) Area Manager Shaun Elwood said a significant amount of rubbish and sand left behind by the flood waters has been removed and the park is now open for business. “NPWS has removed around half a metre of silt and sand brought in by the flood water around the Bents Basin Road Picnic Area, Durrawi Picnic Area, access trail and the lower campground,” Mr Elwood said. “We’ve even removed flood debris from tree canopies at least eight metres from the ground showing how high the flood water reached. “The heavy rain also resulted in many fallen trees in the park which NPWS has cleared. “With the warmer weather fast approaching we are pleased to re-open this site. “The flood waters from June’s devastating east coast low caused significant damage to park infrastructure including the Bents Basin Road car park, internal access tracks and amenities. “This damage generated a safety risk which is why the park was closed and allowed for clean-up work. “The recorded flood water was the highest flood level known by NPWS in the past 25 years in the park. “Flood water peaked at least two metres over the Bents Basin Road car park. The road was under water and impassable between the Bents Basin office and the campground and between the campground and Durrawi Picnic Area. “Now that the clean-up work has been completed, the campground and both picnic areas are now open at Bents Basin State Conservation Area. “This recreational area is perfect for a relaxed picnic or walks in a stunning native bushland setting with great campsite and picnic facilities close by,” Mr Elwood said. WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Lyndon Rumsey P: 4774 1476 M: 0417 174 455 W: warragambabaptist.org.au Sunday Service: 9:30 am

Pastor’s Corner I read a story about an elderly man who was slowly dying. The man’s daughter asked the local Minister, would he come and visit her father. When the Minister arrived, the man was lying in bed, with an empty chair beside the bed. The Minister said, “I guess you were expecting me” he said; “No, who are you?” said the father. The Minister told him his name and said “I saw the empty chair and I figured you knew I was going to show up.” The father said, “I find prayer difficult, when I hear others pray in Church, it just seemed impossible for me; so I stopped praying all together. One day my best friend said to me, prayer is just a conversation that you have with Jesus. Place an empty chair in front of you, and in faith, see Jesus sitting there. Now just talk to him, the way you would talk to anyone else.” The father said, “I have tried it and began to like talking with Jesus each day.” When the man passed away, his daughter said, that she found her father, with his head resting on that chair, beside the bed. Often we find prayer difficult, we feel that God is not interested, we think that we are not good enough to ask God; we get confused about what to pray for? Is it a long time since you prayed? Consider how you would speak to someone you have not seen recently. We often carry inside of our heads, worries and concerns. The Bible says, to bring them to Jesus: “Don’t fret or worry. Instead of worrying, pray. Let petitions and praises shape your worries into prayers, letting God know your concerns. Before you know it, a sense of God’s wholeness, everything coming together for good, will come and settle you down. It’s wonderful what happens when Christ displaces worry at the center of your life.” (Philippians 4:6-7). My prayer is, that you will start a conversation with Jesus, who knows you and loves you unconditionally. God Bless, Lyndon

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps… The beliefs and expectations held by parents can make their job more difficult. Some of these beliefs are: It’s just a phase, all kids do it, don’t they? Certainly some child behaviour is related to their age. For example, young children under the age of 4 years have difficulty sharing because they are egocentric and they haven’t developed ‘theory of mind’ (the realisation that other people have thoughts and feelings of their own). This doesn’t mean that you don’t address the behaviour by communicating boundaries and limits. It is still our job as parents to deal with mistaken behaviour immediately and to consistently apply consequences. The consequences do not need to be harsh (yelling, smacking, extensive time-outs), but they do need to be consistent. If you think the behaviour is just a phase, it may stop you from dealing with it at the time, and it can become more severe. They are doing it deliberately to annoy me. Most children do not behave in certain ways to deliberately upset you. Most of the time, they do things because they don’t remember previous lessons, or they are lost in their own world. Dr Becky Bailey, a clinical psychologist in the USA, says that you usually have to repeat an instruction about 2000 times before the child integrates it into his/her routine. Thinking that a child is behaving deliberately will make you more angry, and there is a chance that you will overreact with harsh discipline, and shame your child (focus on ‘who’ he is, rather than ‘what’ he did). Children need support and encouragement for a long time before they learn how to be a fully functioning human. They do not develop their adult brain until the age of 25 years. Thinking that our children are being wilful, manipulative, or wicked in a given situation does not allow you to have a clear and calm mind, or enable you to think about how you can contribute to your child’s success and teach him/her new skills and behaviours.

The Movies Come To Mulgoa Mulgoa Public School recently hosted a Family Outdoor Movie Night, complete with a big screen showing of Zootopia at the school. Teachers, students, family and friends were treated to the movie in style, with the P & C selling chips, popcorn, lollies and glow sticks on the night. Dom’s Mobile Pizza Bar were also on hand with pizza and cold drinks for the hungry audience. Zootopia proved to be the perfect choice of movie for the big audience that attended, with Mums, Dads and kids all laughing and enjoying the animated film together. The night was a huge success for the school and they hope to have another Family Outdoor Movie Night in the not too distant future. “Approximately 130 people attended a fantastic evening! The main aim was to bring the community together in a familyfriendly environment and their feedback was overwhelmingly positive. We hope to plan a similar evening in 2017” said Rob Francis, Mulgoa Public School Principal.

Wollondilly Mayor To Oppose Gaol Mayor Judith Hannan has written a letter to the Hon. David Elliot MP to advise him that Wollondilly Shire does not support a gaol in Wollondilly. Council’s previous Mayor, Simon Landow, and General Manager, Luke Johnson met with Minister Elliott on 24 May 2016 and 12 September 2016 to discuss the proposal to house a “mega-gaol in Wollondilly. Council was assured that no decision regarding the preferred location has been made at this stage. Nevertheless Council raised concerns about the effect a gaol could have on Wollondilly’s rural character and community. “Details regarding the new gaol are not being made available to us, so we will continue to maintain an open dialogue with the Minister and his team said the Mayor, Cr Judy Hannan. “Wollondilly takes pride in our rural setting. We are rich in farmland and natural settings with residents valuing this, irrespective of where they live. Whilst it can be argued that a gaol may provide local employment, Council is extremely concerned about the potential impact on Wollondilly’s rural character and its strong sense of community. For further information on Council’s position on the proposed mega-gaol in Wollondilly feel free to contact Council’s Senior Communications Officer on P: 4677 9644, E: fran. garciadarke@wollondilly.nsw.gov.au

Vitamin D – Does It Really Help Bone Density? Vitamin D isn’t strictly a vitamin. It’s actually a steroid-likehormone called a secosteroid. When UVB radiation from sunlight hits skin cells, it converts (a form of ) cholesterol into vitamin D. So how does vitamin D help build bone? Vitamin D helps ensure the blood calcium levels remain normal. When blood calcium drops the active form of vitamin D increases three things: 1. intestinal absorption of dietary calcium 2. the reuptake of Calcium from urine in the kidneys 3. removal of calcium from bone (when insufficient dietary calcium) So if you have enough calcium in your diet, vitamin D helps calcium into the blood stream for delivery to mineralising bone. But vitamin D can’t help build bone if dietary calcium is inadequate. Vitamin D also increases production of the main calcium-binding-protein in bone. But the ‘Sunshine Vitamin’’ is much more than a bone builder. It actually activates (or represses) the function of at least 913 genes, and possibly affects expression of as many as 27000. So it’s a big hitter for health!! So who needs vitamin D? Everyone! But unfortunately just under 25% (or 4 million) Aussie adults, have a vitamin D deficiency. So how do we best get vitamin D? And is vitamin D from supplements that same as from sunshine? The simple answer is that vitamin D is best gotten from the

Sun! There are a number of complex reasons for this, but in short Vitamin D from the skin is in a chemical form (sulphated) that makes it water soluble & more bioavailable than non-sulphated supplemental forms. Sun derived vitamin D also lasts twice as long in the blood stream. A person wearing a bathing suit who has just enough sun to get a slight pinkness to the skin 24 h after exposure (takes 1020mins & called 1 erythemal dose), makes between 10,000 and 25,000 IU of vitamin D. But vitamin D is only made between 10am and 3pm in spring, summer, and autumn, so you need to go out around midday! But what about sun exposure & skin cancer? Although UV radiation can damage skin, both active vitamin D (and lumisterol 3) produced in the skin actually protect skin cells from UV damage, via a newly discovered (quick acting) pathway. So getting a little bit of UV isn’t so bad. Just don’t get really burnt! So what does Vitamin D do in real people’s bones? Well, in a 2-year trial, osteoporotic postmenopausal women on a ‘calciumadequate diet’ given 75Îźg of vitamin D daily, had an increase in bone density of .38%. Women given vitamins D (75Îźg) plus K (45mg) daily, increased their bone density even more – almost 1.5%!! Women just given 615mg of extra calcium actually lost .79% in bone density.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Last month I had the Honour of being invited to attend a meeting hosted by Hon Josh Frydenberg MP, Minister for the Environment and Energy and Hon Paul Fletcher MP, Minister for Urban Infrastructure to discuss the Western Sydney Airport. The meeting was held at Parliament House Canberra, it was called a Stake Holders Meeting with representatives from four Local Councils, Developers as well as the Anti-Airport Group. I was representing the Luddenham Progress and the Local Community. We spent over an hour with the Ministers. Before we spoke to the Ministers they updated us on the timeline: • Minister Frydenberg is considering the Airport Plan against final EIS and will impose conditions if applicable during October & November 2016 • Minister Fletcher will have the Airport Plan finalised and determined during November & December 2016 • Planning and design of flight paths as well as Community consultation will take place from 2017 to mid-2020. • In 2021-22 the preferred flight path design will be referred to the Environment Minister. • They also advised that they made the following changes to the draft EIS following on from submissions: • No single merge point over residential areas • Head to head operations in the evening to the South West when safe & feasible. • Revised noise assessment on airport construction and ground based operation. While I was in Canberra I caught up with Lindsay MP Emma Husar who gave me a tour behind the scenes of Parliament House. The RMS have released the latest plans for Northern Road (Penrith End) and they are inviting feedback up until the 4th of

November. They are building a completely new bridge over the M4 just to the east of the current bridge that will be demolished, a sound barrier will be built from the M4 to Aspen St. At the moment the RMS have a short list of 3 Contractors, they expect to announce the contractor within the next month with work starting in the first half of next year. Also at the time of going to print the RMS have told me they will soon be releasing the M12 route. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com

Here we are at the pointy end of the year. For most, it’s a busy time of juggling numerous end of year events and commitments, all the while attempting to remain cool, calm and collected as the Festive Season approaches. Yes! The shopping centres become abuzz with people everywhere, frantically in search of the right gift for those near and dear. Workplaces strive to conclude the year that was, and families come together to celebrate special time with their loved ones. For those that celebrate the festivities of Melbourne Cup Day and the race that stops a nation, I hope you back(ed) a winner! I trust you enjoyed this month's edition of Your Community News. Until next month, our final edition for the year........ Don't wait for everything to be perfect before you start enjoying your life.
