Support Local Businesses - #just20 Our local businesses need you! A number of our local businesses have recently had to close their doors or lay off staff due to losing trade. Many of our businesses are family owned businesses that are struggling to keep their doors open. Mayor, Cr Simon Landow said: “Shire wide our local businesses need our community support. I am asking people to commit to spending $20 at a local business in Wollondilly. Local businesses are the ones that sponsor our sporting teams, schools, raffles along with providing our small towns and villages with excellent produce and friendly service. Without small business we will lose that unique feel.” Wollondilly has a number of unique towns and villages and we want people to think of Wollondilly first when they are planning their shopping trips. We are asking the community to spend here in the Shire and only go out of area if you can’t buy it locally. Your participation in the #just20 initiative will be greatly appreciated by all of the local businesses in Wollondilly and may keep a small business open or an employee in paid work.  Image | www.facebook.com/wollondillymayor

Mulgoa And Wallacia Rural Fire Service Funding Announced Last month, Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP was joined by Minister for Emergency Services, David Elliot MP and Rural Fire Service (RFS) volunteers at Wallacia RFS to congratulate the Wallacia and Mulgoa Rural fire Services upon receiving funding of $5,990 to purchase two interactive screens to be used for training and operational purposes. This grant funding will be used for the purchase of two Interactive Touch Screens; one each for Mulgoa and Wallacia Rural Fire Services. These Interactive Screens will be used for training of Volunteers and are valued at $2,995 each. The Wallacia Rural Fire Service said that the new 55â€? touch screens will be used to help deliver training courses and also for operational planning. “The allocation of this extra funding to the Wallacia and Mulgoa Rural Fire Services will ensure all volunteers will be able to engage in advanced training courses facilitated through the interactive screens. The advantage of this technology allows for the volunteer’s training to be updated regularly and be specific to their local regions. The interactive screens will also be used by both the services in operational planning targeting key areas,â€? said Tanya Davies. “I was pleased to present this funding to the wonderful volunteers of the Wallacia and Mulgoa Rural Fire Services. Their hardworking nature and dedication to ensuring the safety of the Mulgoa electorate is truly deserving of the funding provided by the Department of Emergency Services, so they adequately continue protecting the community,â€? Tanya Davies said. The NSW Budget will deliver a record $1.3 billion for Emergency Services in 2016-17. This includes $7.9 million going directly to Fire & Rescue NSW for construction and refurbishment of fire stations across the State, and $14.8 million for the replacement of essential fire-fighting equipment. ď ˛ Image | Supplied

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender The Anglican Parish of Mulgoa P: 47331635 W: anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am 1st and 3rd Sunday @ St Thomas’ Mulgoa A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa 2nd, 4th and 5th Sunday @ St Paul’s Warragamba A: 4 Weir Road Warragamba

Raising The Flag For Paris Michael Heise, a longstanding member of the Warragamba Community for over 20 years , last month erected French & Australian Flags on the side of Silverdale Road. “I simply wanted to offer an opportunity for the community to stop and reflect, in a show of support for those affected by the recent events”, said Michael.

Take Another Look at Church I recently came across these helpful words of advice, 1. Avoid riding in cars because they are responsible for 20% of accidents. 2. Do not stay home because 17% of all accidents occur in the home. 3. Avoid walking on the street or footpaths because 14% of accidents occur to pedestrians 4. Avoid travelling by air, rail, or water because 16% of all accidents involve these forms of transport. 5. Of the remaining 33%, 32% of all deaths occur in hospitals – so above all else, avoid hospitals. HOWEVER, you will be pleased to learn that only .001% of all deaths occur in Sunday Church Services! Therefore, logic tells us that the safest place for you at any given time is at Church!!! We would love to see YOU at Church here at Mulgoa Anglican Church. Church is the best place for you to be to find out about the God who loves you – who wants to give you a secure future with him. The Bible also often talks about how important it is to care for one another; to show hospitality to one another; to love one another; to forgive one another; to pray for one another; to carry one another’s burdens; to encourage one another; to build each other up. All these things are part of what it means to be part of a Church family. At our Sundays services at Mulgoa Anglican Church, this is what we are committed to doing, all in the context of helping people know the real life that is found in Jesus. Do you want to know more? Give me a call on 4733 1635, or just turn up on Sunday – we would love to meet you!

Pastor’s Corner Worry! What is it that you worry about? There are so many things that challenge us; our health; our finances; relationships; the things we own; the activities we engage in; our future. I was reading a story from a website that both challenged and encouraged me. It tells the story of an experienced Minister who frequently travelled all over the country to bring messages of hope. One day he was on a long flight, when the “Fasten your seat belts” sign came on quickly followed by the announcement, “Please resume your seats immediately, as we are expecting some turbulence ahead. Fasten your seat belts.” Shortly afterwards, a storm broke, loud claps of thunder and lightning surrounded the aircraft. The aircraft lurched violently from side to side and dropped suddenly, it felt like the aircraft was like a cork on a swirling ocean. Many of the passengers gripped their seats tightly, as fear embraced them; the Pastor too was frightened. A little girl, sat nearby, she was reading a book, the storm held no fear for her at all. The Minister could not understand how when the adults were so scared, yet, this little girl was calm, she had no concerns. It was hard to believe that she had no fear. When the plane landed, the Minister lingered around, wanting to speak to the little girl. He asked her, why she was not afraid. She replied, because “My Daddy’s the pilot, and he is taking me home. “ God’s word says: “Don’t panic. I’m with you. There’s no need to fear for I’m your God. I’ll give you strength. I’ll help you. I’ll hold you steady and keep a firm grip on you.” (Isaiah 41:10, from the Message).

Is God the pilot of your life, the person who is directing you and keeping you safe, taking you home? God Bless, Lyndon

All Abilities Playground Funding Wollondilly Shire Council is warmly welcoming the announcement from Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor that the Federal Government will commit $350,000 towards the All Abilities Playground at Warragamba. Mayor, Simon Landow said: “This funding will go a long way towards this much needed Regional Facility in Warragamba and we would like to thank the Federal Government for their generous contribution to our Community” “The All Abilities Playground will be a boost to our local area, which will provide play facilities and toilets specifically catering for kids and adults with disabilities. It will also provide the Community with a unique and treasured facility while contributing to the revitalisation of the Warragamba CBD.” The Playground will be designed in partnership with the Touched by Olivia Foundation and will involve a range of community consultations to ensure it contains the right equipment and meets local needs. The project was identified in 2012 by the local community who formed a working group with Council. Council then established a partnership with the Touched by Olivia Foundation in 2014 with a commitment to the project made by both organisations. Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington

The RMS have finally released the planning for the missing link of the new Northern Road, with the earlier eastern option selected last year the final plan has been the talk of the town. Heading towards Penrith from Eaton Road the Northern Road will have an overpass at Adams Rd (with no access) continuing on to a new intersection of the realigned Elizabeth Drive (200 meters south of the existing roundabout) with the new and old Northern Roads. (See attached plan) The RMS have now narrowed down the area of the M12 Motorway intersection to a 300 metre area that is 300 metres

to the north of the existing Elizabeth Drive. We will also see Littlefields Road turned into a 4 way intersection with Littlefields Road being extended to meet up with a new road that will link up with Gates Road. Gates Road will not have a set of lights and it will only have left turn in and out from Northern Road. If you would like to make comments on the new proposal you have until the 17th of August, all the details are on the RMS website www.rms.gov.au/wsip. Also available on the website are some great videos that show all the details. It is disappointing to see that some of our residents are losing their homes to make way for the road changes. August is the month of Annual General Meetings, the Progress Associations meeting is on Wednesday 3rd at 8pm in the Hall, anyone that lives in Luddenham is welcome to attend and become a member (new members welcome). On Wednesday the 10th at 8pm at the Showground the Show Society will hold its AGM, once again new members are welcome and membership is available to residents of the District (not just Luddenham). With summer just around the corner, the Luddenham Rural Fire Brigade is looking for new members, if you have some spare time and would like get involved in this Community organisation give Bob Sinclair the Group Officer a call on 4773 4142 to discuss becoming part of this great movement. In 2018, Luddenham Show Society will be hosting the Royal Easter Showgirl Zone Final on Saturday 3rd March, this is a Great honour for Luddenham. This date has been updated from the earlier mentioned date. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@ bigpond.com ď ś The New Elizabeth Drive & Northern Roads intersection.| Image Supplied

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 0409 986121 or 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Continuing Our Series on Parent Traps… Parents sometimes give instructions to children in a way that sets them up for failure. Some common problems with instructions are: • Too Many – Children can only take in so much information at once. Sometimes we give too much detail and too many steps. Little kids, and children with disorders or disabilities, can only cope with one instruction at a time. • Too Few – We need to set our children up for success. For certain tasks, we need to give them enough information to get on with the job. Our kids usually let us know when this happens when they say “but you didn’t tell me that”. • Too Hard – Sometimes we give instructions that are too hard for children because we have unrealistic expectations of what our kids can do for their age. • Bad Timing – Instructions given when a child is busy playing with friends or watching his favourite TV show may be ignored. • Too Vague – Telling a child to stop being silly doesn’t tell the child what she should be doing. • Giving Instructions As A Question – If there is no option, don’t give an instruction as a question. For example, asking a child “would you like to hold my hand in the car park?” may be met with the reply “no thanks, mummy” and the child runs away from you. • Long Distance – Yelling instructions across the room or from the other end of the house, frequently doesn’t get much response from a child. • Mismatch - The parents’ body language does not match what she or he is saying. If you are laughing whilst telling a child to not do something, the child will be confused. What To Do Instead? Give your child clear, calm, and direct instructions in close proximity with eye contact. Tell your child what to do (for example, “sit on the lounge”), rather than what not to do (“don’t jump on the lounge”). And have realistic expectations of your children given their age and stage of development.

HEALTH MATTERS

So You’ve got Osteoporosis!! What’s it Really Mean? What can you do About it? Last month we asked whether drugs are really the answer to reduce fracture risk? This month we define osteoporosis and it’s the relevance to your risk of breaking a bone. Osteoporosis is defined in terms of bone density (aka bone mass). Bone density tests measure the amount of X-rays that can pass through a bone (e.g. spine, hip or mid radius). The more X-rays that can pass through, the lower the bone density. Your BMD is then compared to the ‘mean value of peak bone mass’ in normal young adult. A score of 0 means your BMD is equal to the norm for a healthy young adult. You’re classed as having: 1. Osteopenia - if your bone density is decreased moderately (i.e. between 1-2.5 standard deviations) below that of normal young adult. 2. Osteoporosis - if your bone density is decreased a lot (i.e. greater than 2.5 standard deviations) below that of normal young adult We only measure bone density because it may give a clue as to bone strength and your risk of fracture. It’s value is somewhat limited however because in reality many people with low bone density actually have relatively strong bones and some people with high bone density actually have weaker bones. Why? First we need to understand that there are two types of bone tissue – compact & trabecular (see diagram 1). Both are important to a bone’s strength. Once we understand this we can see that bone strength actually depends on at least 4 different things: 1. Whether the compact bone & trabecular bone is thick or thin (how much total bone mass do you have?). Your ‘bone mineral density’ is a measure of your bone mass. Irrespective of your ‘bone mass’, 2. If your bone’s not mineralised properly at a microscopic level, mineralisation defects reduce strength 3. Altered trabecular bone architecture (3D shape & structure) can weaken the whole bone (See diagram 2) 4. Cortical (compact) bone may be more porous (larger number &/or sized ‘Swiss-cheese-like’ holes) and thus weaker. So people with relatively thick bones and reasonable bone density scores, could still have increased fracture risk due to microscopic mineralisation defects for example. Many things influence the 4 ‘bone strength’ factors above, including race, sex, age, diet, exercise, sunshine, smoking, alcohol abuse, autoimmunity, medications (eg corticosteroid use), HRT

and genes. It’s best to build and then maintain bone strength as we age. But even if your bone density is low there are still things that you can do to either halt further bone loss and strengthen existing bone at any age with or without increase in BMD. We’ll discuss some of these over the next few issues so stay tuned. Adopt a Friend for Life! Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 3 lovely kittens ready for adoption now. They have been raised here from a young age at the veterinary hospital and are very dog friendly. The 3 male kittens are from the same litter and are 5.5 months old. Two of the kittens are black and one kitten is black and white. They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit. Check out our website for more information www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. ď śď€ Cute Kittens looking for their furever homes.
