Tramtastic Addition for Local School Last month a new and quirky Senior Study Area was launched at Nepean Christian School. It is a restored 1934 Sydney tram with three rooms and two private study areas that used to be driver’s compartments. The recycled tram is now equipped with wifi, air conditioning and polished hardwood bench tops. Tanya Davies, MP, Member for Mulgoa stated, “I’m honoured to be invited to share in the ‘cutting of the red ribbon’ marking the occasion of the ‘study tram open for use’ by the Year 11 students”. “I congratulate Nepean Christian School students, parents and teachers for capturing and restoring a treasured piece of history for our current and future generations to enjoy.” In the spirit of quirkiness and community, there were three launches during the day – before school during a parent Meet the Teacher event, during the day for all students and after school. A variety of the school’s pioneering Senior Students commented, “The tram fits in with the school’s rustic nature.” “It’s tramtastic!” “We sanded, painted and cleaned the tram, and now we have our own space with all the facilities we need.” “The tram has a calming effect.” “We

Opening of the Study Tram: Tanya Davies, MP and Nepean Christian School Students changed something useless into something that is useful. It’s unique!” The Principal, Geoff Wheaton, said, “Moving from faith to action is vitally important to the life of our school, as is a community spirit based on an authentically Christian outlook. The tram encapsulates all of these.”

From the Editor I am almost writing this in disbelief that we have already arrived at April, with Easter only a few weeks away! We’re on the cusp of school holidays and another term has passed. Before long, it will be Mother’s Day and not to wish the year away, but winter is creeping across the hill as we speak. This month’s edition has some wonderful highlights such as our cover story about our newest Tramtastic addition at Nepean Christian School. What a wonderful project and concept! I took great delight in attending the 60th Anniversary of the ‘Opening of the Carry On Club’ at Wallacia last month. What a very special part of our local history. Read all about it on page 5. You won’t need to look too far, before you find our delightful Easter treats in ‘What’s Cooking’ on page 12 along with lots of regular articles for your reading pleasure, and loads of activities listed in our Community Calendar on page 20. Enjoy your month, and your community news! Remember, be there for others, but never leave yourself behind.

Anzac Day in Warragamba The Anzac Day service is a moving tribute to the memory of those who fell during the wars as well as the current Armed Forces and the returned personnel. It has been well attended for many years and a small committee has been set up to improve the running and safety of the event. Following the sad passing of Jim Neu, the new March Marshal is Lawrence Hope. There will be a few changes this year with the road around the park closed from 10.45am until the end of the march. All organisations laying wreaths will be announced so please contact the committee secretary on 0407 230 499 to ensure your name is on the list. The march will be led by the Blacktown City Pipe band as usual and this year the New Zealand national anthem will be included. Everyone is welcome to attend the service and marchers need to assemble at the Neighbourhood Centre by 10.40am. The march will end at the Warragamba Workers and Sporting Club with complimentary refreshments for the marchers.

ANGLICAN PARISH UPDATE Minister Matt Olliffe • Anglican Parish of Mulgoa • Phone: 4774 0422 • Mobile: 0401 958 161 Sunday Church times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba.

We’ve Boundless Plains To Share At the Northern and Southern ends of the area the Mulgoa and Warradale Gazette serves, substantial residential developments have been foreshadowed, being the Fernhill Subdivision and the Eltondale proposal. Currently there are local billboard campaigns against both developments. I am no town planner. I do not understand all the issues that go into providing human environments that allow local communities to flourish. But here are some of my thoughts (they are my own opinions, not those of my church or it’s members), based on bible teaching, about how we should think about our expanding city of Sydney and the potential that other citizens will join us in living in this beautiful part of the world. First, people matter. Humans are the most important part of environment. We are not alien impositions on the environment, but a natural part of it and it’s crowning glory. God made humans to rule over the rest of the created order as His image bearers (see Genesis 1:26-27; Psalm 8). Jesus said, ‘You are worth more than many sparrows’ (Matthew 10:31). Anything that says humans do not belong in God’s world, or that an animal or a tree, is worth more than a human life, is misanthropic and does not accord with reality. Second, God did not create the world to be empty, but formed it to be inhabited (Isaiah 45:18). God blessed humans and said, ‘Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it’ (Genesis 1:27). Not surprisingly, humans have been remarkably successful at this, now heading towards a global population of 7 billion, and adding 1 billion to global population every decade or so. I welcome such realities. It is no surprise that the emerging powers of the world, China and India, are countries which have populations of around 1 billion each. This is because humans are made in the image of God to rule the earth.

Those emerging nations have an abundance of the most important ‘resource’ God brought forth from the earth: humans. Third, being commanded to ‘rule’ the earth this gives humans important management responsibilities. Being rational and intelligent creatures who understand many things (but not everything) about the created order, humans need to govern, think, consider and plan for the best use of the world God has given us. Because we are sinful, fallen creatures, beset with arrogance, shortsightedness and greed, humans will misuse their intelligence and be at times incompetent in their government of the earth, sometimes with disastrous consequences, for both themselves, the animals, and the inanimate environment. But because God is still in control, he will achieve his purposes for the world and humanity, despite human selfishness and pride. Fourth, we should not fear growth in our city, which includes our suburbs. The Apostle Paul said ‘From one man [God] made every nation of men, that they should inhabit the whole earth; and he determined the times set for them and the exact places where they should live. God did this so that men would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from each one of us. (Acts 17:26-27 NIV). God remains in control, no matter what our local government decides. God’s plan is for precious people to come to know him, which is the most important human pursuit. If new people move into our area, it is part of God’s plan of having them come to hear about and know Jesus Christ. Finally, we should welcome the stranger, and make a little room for him or her. Our national anthem says ‘For those who come across the seas, we’ve boundless plains to share’. This should also apply to those who come across the city. We should ‘practise hospitality’ and share the good things we have (Romans 12:13). And you know what, in seeking other people’s good, we may actually be achieving our own. Matt Olliffe

60th Anniversary of Carry On Club Room Opening Late last month, the Wallacia Progress Hall played host to the 60th Anniversary of the Opening of the Carry On Club Room in Wallacia. The special event was coordinated by the Wallacia Progress Association, who put together a fantastic celebration. Attendees on the day included Penrith Councillor Bernard Bratusa and Three Time Australian Award Winning Bush Poet Greg North. With Ellena Jee as MC, guests were treated to some delightful bush poetry from Greg North, Councillor Bratusa’s speech on the peaceful community and country town of Wallacia as well as stories from former members of the Carry On Club and Elaine Bonning, whose mother was a member of the club. Devonshire Tea was served to the 50-60 attendees with raffles and prizes also on offer. A highlight of the day was the memorabilia and photos that were on display, courtesy of Elaine Bonning. The once flourishing Carry On Club, which closed in 2005, had paid 1 shilling a week on a 99 year lease at the Hall. They regularly participated in outings and celebrations, including raising funds for the community through the Nepean District Hospital, Thorndale School, Governor Phillip Hospital, CWA and Wallacia P & C. The atmosphere of the day was wonderful as one could be excused for feeling like they were a part of the Carry On Club all those years ago.

BAPTIST CHURCH UPDATE Lyndon Rumsey • Warragamba Baptist Church • Phone: 4774 1476 www.warragambabaptist.net • Sunday Morning Service at 9.30 am

Remember Jesus this Easter Season As we approach another Easter period, it is so easy to be consumed by Easter eggs, Hot Cross Buns, the Royal Easter Show and some days off, and then somehow the significance of the Easter story and the importance is lost. Easter is about God the Father’s love for all mankind, which culminated in the death of His Son Jesus Christ. The death of anybody brings mixed feelings, grief, pain and suffering and sometimes the end of difficult circumstances. All of these were present at Jesus’ Crucifixion; there is no doubt that those close to Him experienced grief. Their grief was in the loss of someone they loved, but even more their hope that had been built around Jesus establishing an earthly kingdom, which would free them from Roman tyranny. There is no doubt that Jesus suffered beyond our imagination during those few days. The betrayal by Judas, the false accusations and the unfair biased trials by Pontius Pilate and Herod; The crowd’s choice to release a murderer instead of an innocent man Jesus; The crown of thorns forced onto Jesus’ head; the nails that pierced his hands; the mocking of the crowd and the soldiers; the sign above him ‘This is the King of the Jews’; the sword that pierced his side; and further indignation as they cast lots for His clothes. Perhaps the religious and government authorities thought that they had ended the influence of this man called Jesus, no longer would they have to put up with his supporters and his teachings. How wrong they were. The ongoing effects of Jesus life were just starting, because at Easter time we celebrate a Risen Christ. Jesus Christ came to earth to die for the forgiveness of our sins; that includes all the past, present and future sins, but not just for us, but for all mankind. It was to give us a new life and a new hope, found only through faith in Jesus. The Bible says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” As you celebrate this Easter season, give thanks and take time to remember that ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for you. Remember Jesus has risen and He seeks a relationship with you. God bless. Lyndon Rumsey

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Connection Rituals If your child is having trouble separating from you into childcare or school, or even to family and friends, sometimes it helps to have a ‘connection ritual’. My youngest boy taught me the importance of this. People say that we don’t get an instruction manual when we have our kids. But we actually do. It’s the child himself. Our child tells us what she needs, through her behaviour. When children feel safe within the relationship with you, they will tell you what they need. We just have to listen. My boy developed a ritual at drop-off time and bedtime where he would ask me to blow him a kiss, and he would catch it and put it in his pocket ‘for later’ and then he would pat his pocket. And I had to catch his kiss and put it in my pocket. He was then happy to separate. Thus, a connection ritual is something that communicates your love, care, and attention to your child. It is similar to a ‘comfort item’ but there is no tangible object, just a memory. I am a strong advocate for comfort items like a teddy or a blanket. In the life of a young child, they are a substitute for the primary caregiver. A comfort item provides comfort to the young child during a time when he is starting to realise that he is a separate person to his primary caregiver but the separation causes him anxiety (Dr Donald Winnicott). The comfort item is a reminder of the carer’s love. As children grow older, and it’s not so cool to carry your teddy into school with you, a connection ritual can take the place of a comfort item. A connection ritual can be anything that reminds your child of the bond between you. It can be a word, or a song, but it has to be the same thing each time. One of the coolest connection rituals I’ve seen is a family handshake. You know those funny handshakes that you see on American TV shows. The ones where they shake, then do a thumbs up and a slide, and bump their fists together, and wiggle their fingers, and do an explosion gesture, and all of that? The connection ritual would be done as the final thing when you drop the children off at preschool or school, with a “see ya at the end of school” before you separate. In the USA, connection rituals are standard practice in some schools. The teacher looks the child in the eyes, smiles warmly, shakes the hand of each child as he or she enters the classroom and says “good morning (name of the child)”. Sometimes this job is given to a child who is called ‘the greeter’ and it is just like any other job in the classroom which is rotated amongst the children, just like ‘line leader’. What do you think? Is this something you already do? Do you have some ideas for connection rituals? One of the teachers in the school I work in told me about a book called “The Kissing Hand” by Audrey Penn – you can find it on YouTube. Basically, for the parents the connection ritual is something that creates connection, communicates care, nurture, and attention, and fills the child’s emotional cup before the separation. For teachers, it’s a ritual that communicates to the child that he or she is welcome at school.

Catholic Schools Week and Grandparents Day Last month, Holy Family School celebrated it’s annual Grandparent’s Day along with Catholic Schools Week. This is a day that celebrates the important contribution that grandparents play in the lives of their families and in particular the lives of the children of Holy Family School. The celebrations included a mass, shared morning tea in the schools grounds, book fair and a visit to classrooms for parents. We enjoyed a magnificent day and a great roll up of parents and grandparents. More than 600 guests participated in a celebration of the Eucharist, a brunch provided by our parents and a series of concert items prepared and performed by the students and staff. The wide range of the talents of the students where showcased during the performance. The creativity and commitment of the teachers in coordinating each of the acts and preparing the children for the day was yet another example of their contribution to making Holy Family School a place of school educational excellence. This day again highlighted the strong community involvement and commitment to our school from our parent group. Our Parent Rep Group were instrumental in the organisation of the brunch and providing the cakes, biscuits and savouries that all guests enjoyed on the day. Also it again showed the strength of our relationship with our neighbouring schools with some of the hospitality students from Caroline Chisholm College assisting with service of the brunch to our guests. Thank you to Rita Papalia who attended with the following hospitality students Shanice Da Costa, Samantha Del Monte, Naomi Felton, Tuscany King, Isla Mahoney, Jessica Player, Sarah Ruddick, Samantha Santiago and Roisin Ward.

The work of these girls and the cooperation we have with Caroline Chisholm College helps to make this day run smoothly. On behalf of the school community I would like to express my thanks to all those who made a contribution to the day. Grandparents Day at Holy Family School is a fantastic day to celebrate our Catholic faith, and to highlight the talents and commitment of our students and teachers. State Athletics Success Congratulations to Cameron Gill who recently competed at the State Athletics Titles at Homebush. Cameron claimed Bronze medals in both the 400m and 800m events. Zone Swimming Carnival Congratulations to the Zone Swimming squad on their efforts last week. The team was accompanied by Mrs. Tillman who spoke of how well the team participated and cooperated throughout the day. A special mention to Harry Mason, Anique Pantazakos and Daniel Powderly who qualified to represent at the Diocesan Carnival.

The service provides students with expert one-to-one guidance in English, maths, science, and assignment research. “Local school children deserve this kind of accessible education service, and we are pleased to give Wollondilly families the same benefits seen elsewhere around the country,” says Mayor, Cr Benn Banasik. “It is easy and quick to connect, and the tutors are all specialists in their subject areas.” “Students can ask questions about English and humanities assignments, go step-bystep through a maths or science problem they don’t understand, or start researching a project if they are stuck”. “For teachers, imagine a classroom where ‘I couldn’t do my homework’ is never heard again.” Parents also find the service invaluable, especially those who may not have enough time to help their children with homework around their own commitments, or who simply don’t remember school curriculum content. One local parent commented, “My daughter has used this service several times and she finds it excellent. As a working parent I cannot always help her with her homework when she needs it. The tutors are really helpful and assist her without doing it for her. ” The online tutors are real-life people - certified teachers, professional tutors, and graduates from Australian universities. They don’t tell students the answers, which is what makes yourtutor different to online learning tools that just provide pages of information. The tutors guide students to find the answer themselves, so that they understand how to work it out in future.

Drain well, then pat dry with paper towel. 3. Sift the flour, soda and spices into a large bowl. In a separate bowl, whisk together the oil, buttermilk, eggs and sugar until combined. Add to the dry ingredients and stir to combine. Gently stir in the fruit. Divide the mixture among muffin cases, then bake for 20-25 minutes until lightly browned and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool completely on a wire rack. 4. Meanwhile, place the extra 2 tablespoons sugar in a pan with 2 tablespoons water and simmer over low heat, stirring, until sugar dissolves. Brush the glaze over the muffins. 5. Sift icing sugar into a bowl. Add lemon juice and just enough hot water to make a thick, pipable icing. Use a piping bag or drizzle from a spoon to draw a cross on each muffin, then serve. Jobs Boost for Sydney’s West NSW Minister Assisting the Premier on Western Sydney and Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres has welcomed plans to relocate and consolidate more than 3,000 public servants to new offices in Western Sydney. “This is a move that will boost Penrith economy and support local jobs as part of the NSW Government’s ‘decade of decentralisation’ policy,” Mr Ayres said. “This about a fair go for the people of Penrith and this decision will provide a significant economic boost. It’s a clear demonstration of the NSW Liberals & Nationals Government’s commitment to Western Sydney. “Starting next year, more than 3,000 public servants will be relocated and consolidated to new offices here in Penrith, as well as in Liverpool and Parramatta,” he said. NSW Sport and Recreation will move from Sydney Olympic Park to Penrith. “In the coming weeks, the NSW Government will seek expressions of interest for 5,000 square metres of commercial space here in Penrith, which equates to between five and 10 stories of additional office space,” Mr Ayres said. “The move will create a huge amount of activity in the area - stimulating development, supporting local businesses and creating jobs during construction of the new offices. “Decentralisation makes economic sense. It has the added benefit of ensuring public servants are based in the communities they serve helping to improve the delivery of services. “The relocation will also provide more opportunities for Penrith residents who want to work closer to where they live, and will help reduce congestion in the Sydney CBD,” Mr Ayres said. The NSW Government will not own the new office accommodation, but will instead become an anchor tenant for new investment in the region. “This decentralisation strategy adds to the huge infrastructure projects we are delivering for Western Sydney including WestConnex, the North West and South West Rail Links, as well delivering more nurses, teachers and police,” Mr Ayres concluded.

Easter Fun Facts The word Easter dates back to early England; it is thought to relate to the Pagan goddess of spring and fertility Ēostre (also called Ostara) The tradition of the Easter Bunny originated in Germany. In Australia we also have the Easter Bilby. Exchanging painted eggs started in ancient civilizations with people such as the Egyptians and Persians. The would exchange eggs as a symbol of fertility and new life. When most people eat chocolate Easter bunnies they eat the ears first.

Warragamba Park to Bloom

Nepean Valley RSL Day Club

The Jacaranda trees in the park are going to be gradually replaced over the next few years as they are declining. One has already been removed from behind the Cenotaph where the new First World War memorial wall is to be built. Several trees have been pruned to prolong their life. Six new Crepe Myrtles will be planted as well as a Cape Chestnut, a Queensland Fire Wheel tree and an Illawarra Flame tree. They will provide some lovely colour for months and fit in with the Jacarandas for the time being. Wollondilly Shire Council will organise the tree planting after Anzac Day with the Men’s Shed responsible for watering. The stone steps are also being repaired and the dam cores cleaned by the council.

Last month, the Nepean Valley RSL Day Club was officially opened with a celebratory lunch and cake cutting, held at the Salvation Army Hall, Glenmore Park. This special occasion was attended by numerous officials and dignitaries including, Jennifer Collins, Deputy Commissioner, Department of Veterans’ Affairs; Tom Barnsley – RSL State Coordinator of Day Clubs; Cllr Tricia Hitchen representing Stuart Ayres, State Member for Penrith; Rick Cortese representing Tanya Davies, State Member for Mulgoa; Cllr Ross Fowler, Mayor of Penrith who was also representing Fiona Scott, Federal Member for Lindsay; along with all the Nepean Valley Day Club members and volunteers. 16 committed volunteers regularly attend to make certain that each Wednesday runs smoothly for the Day Club members. Strong support through sponsorship is provided by the City of Penrith RSL Sub-Branch and practical support by the Salvation Army, Bakers Delight at Glenmore Park & Guardian Funerals, Minchinbury. Day Clubs are a weekly social program for older people from both the ex-service and wider community. Day Clubs offer social support and friendship to older people who are still living in the community but who are unable to attend more active programs. Many Day Club members believe they are healthier, happier and more active due to their involvement in their Club. Day Clubs are entirely run by volunteers with the support of the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), NSW Office and the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) (NSW Branch). Day Clubs provide a unique opportunity for volunteers to become involved in rewarding work and make a real difference in their local community.

Five Great Regrets In Life Bronnie Ware is an Australian writer who spent many years nursing the terminally ill in palliative care. In the many conversations she had with her patients she questioned them about any regrets they had or any things they would do differently if given the opportunity again. In the responses common themes surfaced again and again. Taken from her recently released book: The top Five Regrets of the Dying. Here are the most common five regrets: 1. I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me. 2. I wish I didn’t work so hard. 3. I wish I had the courage to express my feelings. 4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends. 5. I wish that I had let myself be happier. Life is a choice. It is YOUR life. Choose consciously, choose wisely, choose honestly. Choose happiness. ….CHOOSE LIFE!

New Positive Credit Reporting Begins On March 12th this year, changes to the Privacy Act came into effect that change the way companies report information about you to credit reporting agencies such as VEDA and Dunn & Bradstreet. While the concept of positive credit reporting is new to Australia, it has already been in place in most OECD countries for some time. Under the new system lenders can now opt-in to see and report information such as: • Date accounts are opened; • Credit limits, including any credit limit increases; • Credit type - such as mortgage, credit card or personal loan; • Date accounts are closed; and • Two years of repayment history. The repayment history on your accounts can actually be listed now, showing back to December 2012 when the legislation was passed. Late payments can also recorded as a negative mark against your name after a short 5-day grace period. If you were worried about your phone or electricity bill you don’t need to, as telcos and utility companies have been excluded from supplying or receiving repayment history information. Defaults (negative reporting) can still be listed a credit file when an account is more than 60 days and $150 in arrears ($100 for commercial credit). Lenders claim that this new system will allow for better credit decisions, and may see more lenders offering individual rates based on a customer’s risk profile. And for some borrowers this may be a good thing, but good personal credit management is now more important than ever.

Swimming Pool Legislation Wollondilly Shire Council been informed today by the NSW Office of Local Government that the date for compliance certificates being required for the sale or leasing of a property with a backyard swimming pool or spa has been delayed by 12 months. Please see notice below. If you are thinking of selling or leasing your property, an additional twelve months has been provided before you need to have a pool compliance certificate before you can sell or lease your property. From 29 April 2015, all properties with a backyard swimming pool or spa that are sold or leased will need to have a valid swimming pool compliance certificate. To organise an inspection for your backyard swimming pool or spa, please contact your local council or accredited certifier. Once a compliance certificate has been issued it is valid for three years. For information on the things to look out for when checking your pool, please refer to the checklist on the swimming pool register. These things include: • Does the gate close by itself from any position? • Are there objects or trees close to the pool fence that children could use to gain access into the pool area? • Is there a resuscitation sign displayed? Appropriate adult supervision is always the most important thing we can do to keep children safe around backyard pools and spa pools. Wollondilly Shire Council is able to offer its services to conduct inspections and issue a Certificate of Compliance for swimming pools and spas. You can download a Compliance Certificate application from Council’s website at: http://www.wollondilly.nsw.gov. au/images/documents/wollondilly/Council/Advertisements/ Application%

C Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time E We all know Easter is a fun time sspent with family and chocolate... llots and lots of delicious chocolate! EEaster is a great time for the human members of the family, h b but the infamous Easter egg hunt ccan end in tragedy for our four llegged friends. Chocolate contains ttheobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags!

• Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around.

Colouring in Competition In the spirit of Easter what better way to brighten up the veterinary hospital, than to host a colouring in competition. All entries will be displayed on the walls of the veterinary hospital. You can download the entry form from our website www. orchardhillsvet.com.au, Facebook page or pop into the veterinary hospital and pick up a copy. Post your entries to Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, 377 Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills, NSW 2748, or drop them in at the veterinary hospital. All entries must be received by 7pm on Monday 28th April 2014. Please ensure your full contact details (name, address, phone number, email) are on the back of the entry form or envelope. Winners will be drawn and notified at 10am on Tuesday 29th April 2014.
