We Are Blue! We Are White! We Are Mighty Dynamite!! Saturday 5th September dawned with great expectations for the Warragamba Junior Rugby League Football Club. It was grand final day and three Wombats teams would soon battle it out for their premiership title;, the under 13b’s, 12a’s and 11b’s. A huge following of the blue & white army turned out in their custom made grand final t-shirts to cheer on their Wombats; it’s wonderful to have so many family & friends involved in supporting our junior rugby league. The flags were waving, the pom pom girls were cheering and the crowd were chanting; the atmosphere was electric. The under 13’s had an outstanding 2009 season even though they struggled for numbers. They came
up against their rivals, Camden and the nerves were apparent. The boys played their hearts out but unfortunately the better team on the day was Camden winning 44-4. The 12’s muscled up against formidable opponents Picton. The Wom-
bats had the lead by two tries and the supporters were going wild! Picton clawed their way back to defeat the 12’s, 32-22. Wombat’s player Telenoti

Moata’ane was named Group 6 Player of the Year for the 12A division – great work Noddy! The 11’s came to the grand final as undefeated minor premiers. They were playing Camden who had rattled them in the semi finals; could they pull it off again? YOU BET!! The 11’s crushed the Rams with a convincing 24-6 victory that had the crowd on their feet the entire match. This team is the first Under 11’s side to win a grand final in 5 years; a fantastic effort boys!! Wombat’s player Brock McPherson was named Group 6 Player of the Day for the 11B division – well done Brock! Warragamba Junior Rugby League is a growing club nurturing good sportsmanship, fair play and great fun for boys and girls aged 5-16 years of age. Special registration deals will be offered if you register with the Wombats for the 2010 season at DamFest 09. Go the Mighty Wombats!!

Warragamba/Silverdale Business & Community inc - Thank you This community group has now closed but we want to thank them for all the work that has been achieved over the years. The group has had a few titles but has always worked for the good of the local community. They have attended hundreds of meetings with the Police, Council the RTA and other organisations. They have also rolled up their sleeves to plant gardens, paint buildings and bus shelters and constantly remove grafitti. They have decorated the towns at Christmas and organised community activities but there are not enough volunteers to help and the remaining members have regretfully decided to close. The group funds and assets are being distributed amongst local groups and the members will continue to work for the benefit ofthe community. Any one interested in helping can contact Terry on 0410 784 412

Paddlewheel Jazz On Sunday the 20th September, the Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler and the six-piece Mulgoa Road Jazz band join forces to raise money for the Brian Spurrett Foundation which was established to raise awareness of maternal and child health in the Asia-Pacific region. The Foundation offers opportunities for training and education of both doctors and midwives from the Pacific Islands in Australia, New Zealand as well as in their own local hospitals. Brian was a long time resident of the local area. He spent his professional life committed to pursuing improvements in reproductive health and sharing his skills and expertise locally, nationally and internationally especially in the Pacific nations. The Brian Spurrett foundation allows his impor-
tant work to continue, beyond his premature death in 2000. The Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler and Penrith Platypus Cruiser, built and owned by John and Helen Wakeling hosts many charity events. Cruising the Nepean River into the Blue Mountains National Park onboard a true old-world paddlewheel showboat, “toe tappin” or dancing to the live Jazz band and all to raise money for a very worthwhile charity, it just doesn’t get any better. With great food, atmosphere and live music, come and relive the romance and excitement of Australia’s river-boat era. 20th September 6pm–9pm Tickets: $58 include the cruise and a two course set menu dinner. Tickets, call 4733 1274. For regular cruises, functions or Christmas Party Cruises see www.nepeanbelle.com.au.

‘Unsung Hero’ Award Jean Willmington from Luddenham devotes most of her time and energy to charity work and raising money for the Cancer Council. “Jean has been an exceptional volunteer and community supporter of Cancer Council NSW for over ten years,so it goes without saying that she truly deserves this title. We are proud to have Jean by our side and are thrilled to have received the $5,000 donation that will continue to help our cause to defeat cancer,” said Selda Simsek,Community Relations Co-ordinator of Cancer Council NSW. Whether she’s organising raffles and morning teas or selling roses grown by her husband, Jean is dedicated to the cause, last year raising a total $12,000 for cancer research. Jean is up at the crack of dawn to run a monthly stall at the local market, proudly selling items that she has spent hours collecting from the community. Her goodwill extends to the residents of the local Edenglassie Nursing Home, who Jean visits each Christmas with more than one hundred small gifts that she has collected and wrapped to help brighten their day. Also a proud member of her local
church, Jean spends many hours volunteering and often steps in for the minister to deliver the sermon. Jean not only shares her cakes and conversation with her community but also her selfless volunteer work, making her a true local hero. Jean said she was very surprised and felt honoured that so many people voted for her. “It’s just great that people get out there and do good for others and it is fantastic that they are recognised through programs such as the IGA Community Chest Unsung Heroes Awards.
Baines Hill Road Work Wollondilly Shire Council has just completed Stage 3 of roadworks in the area known as Baines Hill in Warragamba, and will soon commence the fourth and final stage, completing the hill from top to bottom. There have been questions put to Council about the methods used and the work completed. Council has used different treatment methods in the stages 1 to 4 of the work on Baines Hill. The first and second stages were finished with an asphalt surface as at these locations this treatment was deemed as resulting in the highest benefit to improve
surface friction through the bends. Stages 3 and in time stage 4 have been/ will be finished with a different road treatment. This treatment is the one that is most commonly used on our local road network. It involves a two coats of liquid bitumen with small stones (aggregate) rolled over the top. This finish is $300,000 less expensive over stages 3 and 4. We can therefore allocate funding to work on other important road safety issues. The total amount of funding spent on this project upon completion will be $1.7 million, Stage 4 alone will cost $600,000. The works in Stages 3 and 4 include other safety issues such as the re-alignment of the road both vertically and horizontally, reconstruction of the full depth of pavement, as well as road widening, significant drainage works plus the installation of street lights. “We understand the frustration of residents using Baines Hill as there has been a significant amount of road work done causing traffic interruptions,” say Mayor, Cr Michael Banasik “It is important to note that although the road treatments are different they are certainly adequate and we are giving our rate payers the best value for money, with safety always being our top priority,“ he said.

Fresh Farm Vegies
The key to healthy eating is healthy produce. Now you can buy farm fresh local produce at a market near you. Having just moved to Mulgoa, Hapi and Cath from Field to Feast, are excited to introduce their local neighbours to good quality fruit and vegetables at affordable prices. We currently sell our produce at the Penrith Paceway Market on a Wednesday, and now also at the Organic Food Market in Penrith High Street on Sundays. Our farm is situated in Catherine Field, where we grow a vast array of vegetables and some fruits. We also supplement our range with Chinese vegetables, strawberries and free range eggs from other local farmers. Come along and say hi next time you are at the markets and taste some of our homemade pickles, chilli pastes and sauces.
PRESENT THIS AD WHEN YOU SPEND OVER $20 AND WE’LL GIVE YOU 6 FREE RANGE EGGS!* *Only while stocks last each market day.
Have you ever wished to buy fruit and vegetables direct from the farm? Now you do not need to pack up your car for a day trip – Hapi and Cath from Field to Feast either grow whatever you would like locally, or source local farm fresh for you. If you are after something more exotic, then we can, by special request, buy in from our contacts in the industry for you. We label our own grown produce ‘chemical free’ as we believe that the taste is better without the use of pesticides and chemical fertilisers. Luckily we are situated next to a turkey farm which keeps us in manure throughout the year, and then Leppington Organics are also able to supply much needed fertilisers to help us care for our plants and soil. Unlike other commercial farmers we are able to keep our overheads low, so that we can provide quality produce at a price you can afford. By purchasing your fruit and vegetables through us you are also providing income to many struggling farmers in our local area. Our produce goes from ‘Field to Feast’. Not only do we bring fresh to the markets we also pickle and preserve our produce as the seasons rotate. Currently we have a large range of chilli pastes and sauces, along with many unusual pickles, dips and pestos made from recipes gleaned from around the world. We love tempting people with taste testers – one bite generally and you’re hooked. Unusual varieties get us excited too – wait until summer when we have some of our heirloom tomatoes for you to try! Spring planting has started so our range will expand over the next few months including the much requested zucchini blossoms. Currently we are selling Chinese greens, rainbow chard, fresh cut rocket and mizuna for loose leaf salad, romanesco, broccoli, chicory, endive, Chinese and italian lettuce, three types of
cabbage, 60 varieties of chilli, purple potatoes, royal blue potatoes, broad beans, jerusalem artichokes, shallots, radish, herbs, nuts, eggs, and much much more! If it is unusual then there is a chance we are growing it!

It will be finished by the end of the term with new furniture, an interactive whiteboard and a computer lab. . The existing library will eventually be dismantled and the space landscaped.

This refurbishment will add to the value of the Hall and the painting will give a fresh look to the area. These improvements will finalise the work being done on the Hall and I think the residents will be pleased with the final result,” said Mayor, Cr Michael Banasik.
Warragamba School
St Marys Police are investigating the theft of a piece of industrial equipment (Cherry Picker) from outside the Warragamba Town Hall during the early hours of Sunday 6 September 2009. The blue and grey coloured machine was stolen from near the Town Hall where it was being used to repaint the building. It was driven around the town knocking down street signs before driving through Warragamba school fence where it was abandoned. The senseless damage really upset and angered the students who take a great pride in their school. One girl said “Why would anyone want to do such a stupid and dangerous thing. Our benches where we
Town Hall Improvements Wollondilly Shire Council is in the process of refurbishing Warragamba Town Hall following the work recently done on the new toilet block. That work was completed in July this year with a budget of $132,000. The current work includes replacement of roof sheeting, replacement of timber weatherboard, window repairs and external painting of the entire Hall. The budget for this work is $74,000 and is due for completion by the end
Construction has commenced on our new school hall and attached COLA (Covered Outdoor Learning Area). Construction will commence shortly on a COLA over the netball court and on the refurbishment and extension of the school’s administration block. In addition we are very excited regarding the recent purchase and installation of two interactive whiteboards (IWB’s). These fantastic resources will enhance the teaching and learning programs that our teachers implement and provide another dimensiuon tot he children’s learning. We plan to purchase more IWB’s in the near future. Ben Matthews Principal, Warragamba Public School

Thursday Evenings
Wollondilly Shire Council is hoping to raise awareness about safe cycling by holding a competition to win a bike and helmet. The competition involves filling out an entry form that has multiple choice questions about safe cycling. The competition is open to children under 12 with parents/guardians permission. Phantom Cycles at Tahmoor are donating the bike and helmet. Entries are available on Council’s web site at www.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au or from the Council building. The competition closes 2 October. “Our Wollondilly Road Safety Group hopes by holding this competition, children will think about issues such as being road safe, regular bike maintenance and use of helmets. Establishing safe riding habits when children are young is a positive start to road safety later on,” said Mayor, Cr Michael Banasik. “We would also like to encourage our local kids to use the shared cycleways which are found in Buxton, Tahmoor, Yanderra to Bargo (under construction), Warragamba and at the Botantic Gardens in Picton. Spring is a great time of year to be out and about”

Warragamba Netball We have 10 teams in the competition this year: 1 Netta, 6 Junior and 3 Ladies’ teams. Four teams made it to the grand final held last week. Two teams won the Grand final held on Saturday at Jamieson Park Penrith. Congratulations to the under 12’s (Aztecs) coached by Tammy Matheson and also the Under 16’s (Wombats) coached by Maureen Skuratowski. The Angel Blues (under 13’c) and the ladies team (Blue Tongues) were defeated in the grand final but congratulations to them also on their outstanding effort to make the grand final. We have had a lot of girls working hard to obtain umpiring badges this year. A big congratulations goes to Emma Skuratowski who obtained her District B Grade badge and also to Jane Skuratowski, Rebekah Schraven and Bethany Dalton and Caitlin Hooper who obtained their District C Badge. All of these girls have worked very hard this year for our club showing dedication each week by turning up
to umpire more than one game on the day. We also hope to get some other girls badged before the end of the year. Good luck with this. Many people do not realise that our Warragamba Club are required to submit an umpire for each team registered in the competition, so many of these girls have been doubling up devoting most of their Saturday to our club and our commitments in umpiring. We could not operate without this contribution. Our umpire’s convener Linda Schraven has spent many hours training these girls and helping them each week to achieve this goal. Thank you Linda! We also have had some help from Emmaus Netball Club this year in helping to supervise our learning umpires. We would like to thank these ladies for their support also. A huge thank you to all our coaches this year: Bethany Dalton, Pam Dalton and Laura Nash who do a wonderful job with our only Netta team - the babies, the Misty’s. Trish Hoban who has shared her
