Reduced Red Tape Means $800 Saving For New Home Builders

 Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa, The Hon, Pru Goward MP, Minister for Planning, The Hon. Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith and Minister for Emergency Services

Families building new homes can save $800 under new arrangements for approvals in bushfire-prone areas, which put safety first while making it easier and cheaper to build, and remove duplication, Minister for Planning Pru Goward and Minister for Emergency Services Stuart Ayres announced last month. Ms Goward and Mr Ayres were joined by Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies at Mulgoa Rise to make the announcement. The changes remove the need for local home-builders to do an assessment of bushfire risk when they lodge their DA to build if the Rural Fire Service (RFS) has undertaken an upfront assessment of bushfire risk at the subdivision stage. Currently, those building homes on bushfireprone subdivisions have to undertake their own assessment even if the RFS has previously given the subdivision the tick of approval, adding approximately $800 to the cost of building a new home. Health Assessment Survey for Wollondilly The Wollondilly Health Alliance (which includes Wollondilly Shire Council, South Western Sydney Medicare Local and South Western Sydney Local Health District) is conducting a study to help guide the future development of health services in Wollondilly Shire. Wollondilly Health Alliance was established to address the health needs of the local community. Among the most important health issues is the relative under supply of providers of healthcare and in health related support provided by Non Government Organisations and poor access to scarce providers is exacerbated for small, scattered and isolated communities. “Please fill out this quick survey on Council’s website and help us to find out what health shortfalls we are facing in Wollondilly. This is an important study and we encourage you to have your say, says Mayor, Cr Benn Banasik. Please share your views and suggestions about local health services by completing this 10 – 15 minute survey (by 5pm on Wednesday,18 June 2014). Go to Council’s website at wollondilly.nsw.gov.au, there is a tab on the home page with a link to the survey. Your feedback is important to us and will be used to inform the Wollondilly Health Needs Assessment.

The Suffering Jesus Allows His Friends To Go Through If you had the power to heal a sick friend, would you go and do it? Sounds like a no brainer, doesn’t it? Of course you would go. What if your friend was a good friend, whom you loved? And what if his two sisters begged you to come? You care for them deeply too. And what if you knew for sure that your friend was indeed going to die, and you had the power to stop it happening. You would go even quicker, if that were possible, wouldn’t you? Jesus faced such a situation in John chapter 11. But he didn’t drop everything and go. He who turned water to wine (John 2), who fed 5000 with 5 loaves and 2 fish (John 6), who raised an ungrateful crippled man (John 5), and who opened the eyes of a blind man (John 9), stayed just where he was. Deliberately, Jesus waited 2 days before setting out on a 2 day journey. In that time, Jesus’ friend died. In the middle east, both then and now, burials must happen quickly. The heat causes the dead bodies to decompose more quickly. There was no refrigeration. Moreover, there were no undertakers. The families washed and cleaned the body. His sisters were given the grizzly task of cleaning away the filth and wrapping their dead brother in a shroud. And then they immediately buried him, and gave themselves over to grief. Jesus knew all this would surely happen. And he allowed it all to happen to his good friends. In fact, he said ‘I am glad I wasn’t there’. Why? Is Jesus calloused and pitiless? No, that’s not it. In fact, when

Jesus does arrive in Bethany, twice John says he was deeply moved by grief. And Jesus stood at the tomb and wept, when he saw all the sadness and grief of those he loved. Jesus saw there was something more important than his friend’s pain, grief, sadness and death. It is still true today. Jesus, of course, answers our prayers and heals when he decides. But being a follower of Jesus doesn’t save you from the normal sufferings of a fallen world. For Jesus, the more important thing is that we must know for sure who Jesus really is. Sometimes people ask why suffering happens. There are many true answers to this deep question. One of the true answers Jesus gave in this situation was ‘so that the Son of God [Jesus himself] might be glorified through it’ (John 11:4). God will ultimately be glorified by every rotten and abysmal thing that happens in his world. This includes your suffering, and mine. Jesus allowed Lazarus to die so he could raise him again from the dead. He did this so that we would know this life-saving fact about him: “I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in Me, even if he dies, will live. 26 Everyone who lives and believes in Me will never die—ever. Do you believe this? (John 11:25-26 NIV) I hope you do. Because then your sure and certain suffering and death (unless Jesus comes back soon), will issue in wonderful eternal life. Call upon Jesus Christ today. Free Adult Hearing Screening Tests Monday 23rd June from 10am (appointment necessary) Getting your hearing checked is a quick and easy way to find out more about your hearing. Hearing loss is more common than most people think. 1 in 6 Australians suffer from some form of hearing loss. This hearing check program offers a convenient way for the community to check their hearing. A hearing check can be done in 10 minutes and measures what sounds a person can hear over the 4 main frequencies that we hear. If the results indicate the patient might have a loss of hearing, patients are referred for a further full assessment with an audiologist.

BAPTIST CHURCH UPDATE Lyndon Rumsey • Warragamba Baptist Church • Phone: 4774 1476 www.warragambabaptist.net • Sunday Morning Service at 9.30 am

Recently I was reading a book where the author described an incident that happened to his wife. His wife was having lunch with a friend at a local restaurant. On arrival his wife stepped out of her car, saw her friend was waving to her and saying something. But the wife could not hear a word, because a jackhammer was pounding away, only a few feet from where she was. She walked towards her friend, who as it turned out, was just saying hello, and the two entered the restaurant. When it came time to leave, his wife couldn’t find her keys. She looked in her purse, on the floor, in her friend’s car. Finally when she went to her car, there they were. Not only were the keys in the ignition, the car was running. It had been running the entire time she and her friend were in the café. This story reminds me that the world we live in is both busy and noisy. Our lives become crowded, and the human engine of our lives is always running. We find it increasingly hard to stop what we are doing; we find it even harder to think about God, or to listen for his voice. Psalm 46:10 says: “Be still and know that I am God.” How do we go about finding time to be still and being able to sense God’s presence? Jesus would regularly withdraw from those around him, and spend time alone praying to God the Father. We too, need to find a quiet place away from the things that distract us, and spend time in God’s Word. Psalm 1, speaks about this subject, “Blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked or stand in the way of sinners or sit in the seat of mockers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and on his law he meditates day and night. He is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither. Whatever he does prospers.” My prayer is that each of us will draw aside, meditate on God’s Word, and may our lives, be like that tree, yielding the ch of us. fruit of what God has planted in each God bless Lyndon Rumsey Ph: 0417174455

Reduced Red Tape Means $800 Saving For New Home Builders The changes will only be allowed if strict conditions are met, including: • The land is not at high risk of bushfire; • Approval has been given by the RFS which allows building in bushfire-prone areas, known as a Bushfire Safety Authority – this will now include a plan showing the bushfire attack levels and conditions future houses must meet; • A Post-Subdivision Bushfire Attack Level certificate, which is issued by the RFS or suitably qualified consultant, has been issued; and • The authority in charge of approving the new home, such as the local council, is satisfied the building complies with any conditions that have been put in place by the RFS “This is good news for local families who now have the choice of having detailed bushfire assessments completed up front, meaning local home-builders no longer need to worry about lodging an individual bushfire report if strict conditions are met” Tanya Davies said. Currently bushfire-prone land maps of new release areas are updated every five years by local councils meaning they may not always be accurate. “We all know the costs of building a new home can add up, and that’s why as a Government we are determined to drive those costs down to save families money, by removing duplication without compromising safety” said Stuart Ayres. The announced changes will mean the RFS can now directly update these maps when required ensuring their accuracy with the most up-to-date information. “$800 might not sound like a lot, but ask any family building their new home and they will tell you that at the end of the day even saving a small amount can go a long way” said Tanya Davies. The Department of Planning and the NSW Rural Fire Service conducted detailed targeted consultation regarding these changes with the building industry and councils across the Sydney, Illawarra and Hunter regions. The changes only apply to land in urban release areas in 40 local government areas and will not affect development in existing subdivisions in bushfire prone areas.

Don’t Leave Winter Fire Safety to Chance Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith has urged home owners to take simple precautions to protect life and property during the peak winter house fire season. The State’s annual fire safety awareness campaign reminds home owners what they can do to reduce risk of fire in their home. “Winter is an especially dangerous time of the year for home fires, with more than 60% occurring in the cooler months between May and September,” Stuart Ayres said. “Fire & Rescue NSW responded to 1,910 home fires across NSW between May and September in 2013. Sadly, some of these fires resulted in human fatalities, or serious injuries. “The tragic part is most of these could have been prevented with a few simple steps and precautions.” Preventable fires not only have a personal toll, they also impact on emergency services, hospital staff and others in the community who respond to the blaze and deal with its aftermath. At the recent campaign launch, Fire & Rescue NSW Commissioner Greg Mullins and NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons reminded homeowners to take time to make necessary checks of their homes, and to avoid being complacent. Commissioner Mullins warned householders they could pay a hefty price for complacency, with a fire in the home costing an average $46,000. “On average, firefighters attend 102 home fires a week during winter alone. Nearly half of these fires (47 per cent) start in the kitchen,” he said. “Don’t leave your fire safety to chance this winter. Have a working smoke alarm and a practised home escape MULTI-AWARD WINNING

plan and do our free online fire safety checklist (at www. homefiresafetyaudit.com.au) to identify risks in your home,” Commissioner Mullins said.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com After many years working with kids, and having three of my own, I am firmly of the belief that parents talk too much. There’s too much questioning, nagging, lecturing, telling them what/how/ when/where/why, taking over, yelling, and yakkity-yak. Too much noise. When my kids come home from school, I ask “how was school”. I never expect any answer other than “good”. And I leave it at that, I rarely ask any more questions. Just asking the question opens up the possibility of communication. I know that each of them will come to me throughout the evening to tell me about their day. They do that when they are in the right space and frame of mind to talk, when they have sifted through all of the information and interactions they have experienced. And when they come to me, I LISTEN. I tend not to ask many questions, but I do a lot of reflective listening – repeating what they have said to me, reflecting on their emotions, being present, being silent and holding that space between their inner and outer worlds. I do the same with the children I work with. Reflective listening enables the child and I to get to the heart of what is bothering the child with very little effort. Everyone likes to be heard and have their thoughts and feelings validated. Parents are surprised when I tell them that I rarely offer solutions to children for their problems. I work alongside rather than stand over the top of. Kids are smart. Through reflective listening, children often get to the solution themselves, and because they have come up with it, they are committed to it. Dr Beth Onufrak in the USA has written a wonderful article on her blog “A Child in Mind” (wordpress). Titled “What’s wrong with the Wh questions?” she explains that questions shut a child down very quickly. Dr Onufrak says that “Wh” questions can be unhelpful because they: 1. Shut down a child’s own narration and conception of the problem 2. Block a child’s sharing of the salient details to him 3. Pigeonhole a child’s thinking into your categories of thought 4. Build a child’s frustration with us adults 5. Make a child more upset from the communication gap She advises that a better alternative is to say to the child “Tell me all about it”. I was talking with a parent recently. She said that her child comes to her to ask for help with a task, but when she tries to help her, the child storms off in a rage. The well-meaning parent then runs after the child asking her lots of “wh” questions to try to get to the bottom of the problem. The child becomes more resentful, and nothing gets resolved. I said that it sounded like there was a disconnect there somewhere, a gap between what the child wanted and what the parents saw as the child’s needs. I suggested that “I messages” are pretty good at sorting out misunderstandings. I wondered how the child might respond if the parent went to the child when she was calm and said something like “I don’t understand it when you ask me to help you with something, and I try to show you what to do, you then get upset and storm off. I would really like to know what I can do better next time, so we can work it out together”. “I messages” communicate how you feel about something without placing blame on anyone. Making time to ‘be with’ our kids, spending time, showing affection, being present, being available, being responsive and reflective, being alongside, and listening, truly listening, to our kids. When we do this , our kids return the effort in spades through being amazingly competent and communicative young ones.

Holy Family School Update from the desk of Principal: Mr Tim Vane-Tempest

ANZAC Day Commemorations The local commemoration of ANZAC DAY recalls and honours the sacrifices made by our service men and women. Like Jesus on Good Friday, they too have given their lives for others; born out of a deep love and commitment to the care and safety of all. Thank you to the children and parents who attended for supporting our school community’s presence at this very important community event. It was great to see so many of our students marching with medals of family members. Taking a small amount of time out of our usual routine and the possibility of a holiday is a mark of respect for those who have sacrificed and continue to sacrifice for all of us. This connection to our collective national history is an important way that we pass on our traditions. It was also wonderful to see many of our past students who attend Caroline Chisholm College also marching behind their school banner. Congratulations to Madeleine & Amelia Vella, Clara Davies, James & Sarah Macri, Emily Attard, Kaitlyn & Liam Vella, Ammaleah & Montayah Astruc, Christopher & Nicholas Cosic, Brock Heiler, Max Blackhurst, Jacqui & Ben Sheil, Ryan & Emily Woodhead, Georgia Calderwood, Sarah & Cameron Vella, Andrea & Annalise Surace, Patrick & Matthew Vial, Lachlan & Matthew Urschel, Dominique Sidoruk, Joshua Lewin and Daniel Kraljevic for representing their families and our school community so well. I would also like to acknowledge Kimberly Fenech, who acted as a flag bearer during the ceremony, and Kiesha McMahon, both girls marched with their Girl Guide troupe.

COUNSELLING CORNER with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com Do you remember the book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ by Stephen Covey? I revisited the wisdom in the book when I accepted an invitation to undertake a leadership programme based on Covey’s insights. Habit 2 “Begin with the end in mind” states that “if you do not know where you are going, you do not know where you will finish up.’ A good way to keep the end in mind is to develop a Personal Mission Statement. Your Personal Mission Statement focuses on what to be and on the attitudes and actions that will help you to become that person. Covey suggests that you take some time to imagine your 80th birthday party. Who is present at the party? What would you like them to say about you? Another way to ground your Personal Mission Statement is to imagine you are attending your own funeral .What would you like that person giving the eulogy to say about you and the life you have lived? What values do you hold dear…..family ? to be hardworking ,loyal, trustworthy, kind etc If we assume that life is not a dress rehearsal then we are really called to live out our own Personal Mission Statement every day. And finishing with another of Covey’s quotes: “ it’s ok to sit on the fence if you need a rest, but sooner or later it’s time to decide what you want. And remember … not deciding, just letting life happen … that’s a decision as well. “ May the force be with you!!!

Border Collie Fun Day on Sunday 6th July RSPCA Million Paws Walk on Sunday 18th 2014, 11am to 3pm! May 2014!! Dr Katrina Warren and Kelly Gill are holding their third Border Collie Fun Day at Castle Hill Showground, Dog Arena (Doran Drive, Castle Hill). It will be a family friendly event, inviting Border Collie owners to bring their dog’s for a social afternoon of Border Collie activities. They also expect a lot of spectators as people are welcome without a dog. ‘Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill are delighted to welcome Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital to our Border Collie Fun Day. Dr Camille Brandt will be our official vet on the day and will also be offering free veterinary checks and answering your Border Collie health questions.’ The Fun Day will be showcasing a wide variety of Border Collie activities, including sheep herding, tricks, flyball, agility, treibball, nose work, heelwork to music, obedience and frisbee. Treibball (pronounced try-ball) is an awesome new dog sport and is a fun game for dogs of any size or breed. Dogs learn to run around 8 large exercise balls, pushing the balls one at a time with their nose or shoulder straight into the goal as quickly as possible. Treibball promotes better teamwork and communication between dog and handler as they develop skills in distance work and impulse control. There will be stalls, show bags, fun competitions, photo opportunities and interactive activities. Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill are also out to find the fastest border collie over a sprint, racing against the clock. The day will also be raising money for Border Collie Cancer Research, with a huge raffle and lots of other fundraising activities. For more information: www.facebook.com/drkatrinawarren; www.facebook.com/thewonderdogs; www.thewonderdogs.com.au

The RSPCA Million Paws Walk is in its 20th year and is a great way to raise money for animals in need. Staff from the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital attended the Blue Mountains RSPCA Million Paws Walk at Katoomba on Sunday 18 May 2014 and had a great day out with their dogs and family members. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital raised $730.00 online to support the RSPCA. Thank you to our generous supporters. The RSPCA is NOT an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community to continue it’s vital daily work. Along with shelters, volunteer branches and Inspectors, they also fund an education team that visits schools, universities and community groups to educate the importance of treating all living things with kindness. Thank you for making the RSPCA NSW your charity of choice.

Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.

Tips on What to Look for When Choosing a Finance Broker 47.3% of home loans in Australia are now provided by mortgage brokers, and with this number tipped to grow even larger it’s a good time to remind people of what they should look for when choosing a credit adviser. A Good Broker Should: Make the time to meet & discuss your situation at a time and place that suits you; Ask questions to find out about your situation, preferences and what you would like to achieve, and answer any questions you have; Be an expert in lender policy and loan products, guiding you to the products that best meet your needs; Prepare and lodge your application with your chosen lender on your behalf; Communicate with you throughout the process, as well as engaging with real estate agents and legal representatives on your behalf; Be passionate about educating their clients; Have total transparency when it comes to how they operate, how they are paid and how much they get paid. A good broker will work for you, finding you the best deal and most suitable product for your needs. They manage the process from application to settlement to make the process as smooth as possible, and are there to help once everything has been finalised. Good mortgage and finance brokers can save their clients considerable amounts of money, time and hassle. By knowing what to look for you will find an expert who is professional and matches your needs.
