All That Jazz

A fantastic night for all was had last month at the 11th Annual Charity Jazz Dinner with The Mulgoa Road Jazz Band. The venue for the night was Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club in Luddenham and was again organised by Dr Adrian Sheen. This year, the charity that was supported was Opportunity Cambodia. Opportunity Cambodia, established by the Fletcher family, works in conjunction with the Cambodian Education and Development Fund to provide for the welfare and education of children and training of young people in Cambodia. The event was sold out and also featured the famous ‘Mulgoa Idol’ talent competition. Winner of the 2014 Mulgoa Idol was Allie Bizzanelli, who sang ‘Orange Coloured Sky’. Second place was Claudia (singer), with Matthew (unicyclist) and Amelia and Bronnie (violinists) taking third. The Mulgoa Road Jazz Band were at their best, wowing the room and performing songs such as High Society, Georgia On My Mind and What A Wonderful World. The raffle prizes were first class and included a handmade quilt, basket of wine, Easter basket, silk bag and scarf,

champagne and Lollylicious chocolate bouquet. The silent auction featured a Palsonic LCD TV. The funds raised from the night were a much needed boost for the charity. “It costs $900 a year to support a child through education, food and clothing. We are very thankful for the money raised tonight in aid of this” said Opportunity Cambodia Founder and CEO Carolyn Fletcher AM. Dr Sheen’s vision of “keeping the music alive” certainly came true and next year should again prove to be the hottest ticket in town.

Hope For Orphans In Cambodia Local resident Jeannie Whatley has undertaken the trip of a lifetime, volunteering for two weeks in early May with her best friend of 45 years Rhonda Byrnes, for the International Volunteer HQ (IVHQ) orphanage/ childcare program in Cambodia. IVHQ is a New Zealand based Non-Government Organisation (NGO) that provides safe, affordable volunteering opportunities abroad. Cambodia has a high number of orphans comparative to population. Many of the children have lost their parents due to HIV, whilst other parents cannot provide food, accommodation and education for their children. Many “orphans” still have parents or relatives that visit occasionally. Jeannie, who is currently a Diversional Therapist with NSW Health, values the role a volunteer plays in everyday life. “Volunteering to me is incredibly rewarding. I have been a volunteer with St John Ambulance for the past 10 years. At the back of my mind, I always wanted to give a bit more, especially to the disadvantaged and children. It’s been a dream of mine to go on a volunteer program to share my knowledge, love and empathy to others” she said. Whilst on the program, Jeannie will be participating in the aiding of administration, cooking, cleaning, painting, fun activities and sports. She will assist with their daily lessons, homework, feeding and caring for the children, alongside teaching. Volunteers help with general work and hygiene, working an average of 4-8 hours a day, depending upon placement. “I’m very excited and nervous about my new adventure. It’ll be an honour and incredibly rewarding, giving me an opportunity to further my understanding and knowledge of Cambodia, whilst getting a taste of their culture, traditional customs and way of life” Jeannie said. Jeannie is a valuable member of the local community and we wish her all the best!

ANGLICAN PARISH UPDATE Minister Matt Olliffe • Anglican Parish of Mulgoa • Phone: 4774 0422 • Mobile: 0401 958 161 Sunday Church times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba.

Just Ask Me! Prayer is simply talking to God. Prayer is hard work. It is hard work talking to somebody you cannot see. It’s hard not seeing immediate results. Talking to God is a great joy and privilege. We get to present our requests before the creator of the universe who cares for us (Philippians 4:6; 1 Peter 5:7). He listens and will answer the deepest desires of our hearts more than we can ask or imagine (Ephesians 3:20). These two realities co-exist side by side for the Christian. That is why prayer is perhaps the greatest act of trusting Jesus. It means we must stop trusting ourselves, and submit our cares to the creator and sustainer of the universe. In this activist, can-do, age, It is a miracle when anybody prays -- I mean, really prays, seeking to make God’s priorities our priorities, and then asking God to meet the deepest desires of our hearts, and then expecting God to hear and answer our little prayers as is best for us (Luke 18:1-14). If you are not a Christian, Christian prayer looks babyish and a waste of time. ‘Hey, these Christians have an invisible, imaginary friend they can’t see, hear, touch or feel! I grew out of that at age 6! They think the creator of the universe listens to their paltry concerns!’ To you friend, I say, ‘try it and you will find out’.’Taste and see’. Better to start now when you are able (if you are reading this, you can pray), than when God cuts you down to the dust of death (remember that we die and lose everything!) Naked we came into this world, and, unless Jesus comes back soon, naked we will depart. But if you are a Christian, and

have put your trust in Jesus Christ, Christian prayer is your lifeblood, your food and your drink, the very air you breathe. Your life is now a ‘walk with God’. You walk with him, and talk with him, and he leads you everywhere you go, only ever allowing you to go through what is good for you (even the bad, uncomfortable stuff we never asked for, which God will turn around for our good in the end). His concerns now are your concerns, and your concerns are his. You pray continually through Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 5:17). Even your inarticulate sighs and groans are prayer, that the Holy Spirit wings to the Father in heaven (Romans 8:26). And the risen Jesus Christ is at the right hand of God the Father, interceding for us (Romans 8:34) If you don’t pray, you are probably not a Christian. So here is a promise for you: ‘if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord, and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. (Romans 10:9). I hope you can turn that promise into a prayer back to God. That’s how you become a Christian. Why don’t you do that now. Then what I am about to say next can apply to you, too. If you do pray to God through Jesus, here is a promise for you, straight from the Lord Jesus Christ himself, who sits at the right hand of God: ‘Truly I say to you, if you ask for anything from the Father in my name, he will give it to you. ... Ask and you will receive, so that your joy might be full to overflowing’ (John 16:23-24). That sounds like a blank cheque to me! So off you go. Ask him! BAPTIST CHURCH UPDATE Lyndon Rumsey • Warragamba Baptist Church • Phone: 4774 1476 www.warragambabaptist.net • Sunday Morning Service at 9.30 am

Pastors Corner In the month of May we celebrate a special day each year when we acknowledge the role of our mother’s. My own Mum would have been a couple of days short of 90 years of age on Mother’s Day this year, but sadly she passed away at the age of 49 years, which is far too young. Throughout the time I had with my Mum, I always knew that she loved me, accepted me, cared for me and that she believed and dreamed for the best things in life for me. Her absence for so much of my life is a gap, that can’t completely be filled. However Mother’s Day is also a time to acknowledge all the daughters of so many mother’s, that God created and for the gift they bring into each of our lives. In Luke 10 it is recorded that Jesus goes to the house of Martha and her sister Mary. Martha is very busy preparing for her guest and Mary instead sits at Jesus feet. Martha comes to Jesus and says “Lord, don’t you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!” Jesus replies “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.” What do we learn from this story? Is Jesus saying stop, do nothing; I think not. Perhaps a more likely lesson is that no matter how busy we are, we should take time to meet with God. For most of us our lives become busier and busier, we find it harder and harder to even think about God. As you continue to live out your busy life just like Martha, take time to remember that the God of all creation loves you and wants you to take time to sit, and be like Mary, and to enjoy God’s presence in your life. To all of you who are daughters, Happy Mother’s Day. Thank p , your y you for your love, your acceptance, care,, and for the manyy ways you have blessed us, s, from all of us who are grateful sons. God bless Lyndon Rumsey Ph: 0417174455

$1.36 Million Project Starts To Improve Mulgoa Road at Mulgoa Motorists are soon to experience safer travel on Mulgoa Road at Mulgoa. Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa, said the NSW Government provided $1.36 million to resurface the road between St Thomas Road and Jerry’s Creek, widen road shoulders to improve safety and improve drainage to reduce water on the road during wet weather. “Roads and Maritime Services will also improve bus stops along the stretch of road which will also be carried out as part of the work. “This is great news for the local community and motorists,” Tanya Davies said. “As a result of this work we will see improved safety and ensure Mulgoa Road serves motorists well into the future.“ The project is part of Roads and Maritime’s commitment to deliver safe, efficient and high quality services and infrastructure to the community and businesses of NSW.

Work commenced in April and will be carried out on weekdays between 7am and 6pm and 8am to 1pm on Saturdays and be completed mid this year, weather permitting. Changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits will remain in place even outside work hours while the upgrade is carried out. Motorists are asked to follow the signs, reduced speed limits and the direction of traffic controllers. “We thank motorists and residents for their patience while this important work is carried out,” Tanya Davies said. For more information on road projects around Sydney visit www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roadprojects. For live traffic information visit www.livetraffic.com, download the Live Traffic App or call the Transport Management Centre on 132 701.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Frequently I write this article based on what I’ve been talking with parents about during the month. This month, I have been talking a lot about some of the most basic parenting tools for your toolkit which are also highly effective. They all come from the Triple P parenting group. Tool number 1 Remind your children of ‘what to do’ rather than ‘what not to do’. Instead of saying “don’t run”, say “walk”. Instead of saying “don’t hit”, say “hands to self”. When you use the negative, ie, “run”, “hit”, children don’t hear the “don’t”, they just hear “run” and “hit”. Tool number 2 Descriptive praise is very powerful. Saying ‘good boy/girl’ makes your kids praise junkies. They love it, but they never quite understand what they’ve done well. Descriptive praise tells children what they are doing well. Examples, “thanks for picking up your socks, and putting them in the wash basket, that helps me out heaps”, “I really like how you kept going on that task until you got it just the way you wanted it”, You thought really carefully about that before you did it, I admire that”. Tool number 3 The more attention you pay to children’s behaviours, the more of them they will do. This is based on 40 years of research, it’s not earth mother or hippie-la-la stuff. So, if you pay a lot of attention to your child’s negative behaviours, what do you think will happen? Yes, they will do more of them. Think about it – you would hate being reminded of all of the times you stuff up – doesn’t make you feel good about yourself does it? Choose one of your child’s behaviours that drives you bonkers. Got it? OK, now think of the opposite behaviour. Now start paying more attention to the opposite behaviour (the positive one) with descriptive praise. An example, if your child speaks too loudly, then instead of rousing on him for being too loud, give him descriptive praise every time he speaks quietly. Tool number 4 If you call your child ‘naughty’ often enough, he or she will prove you right. And that goes for any other negative name that you call your child – clumsy, hopeless, lazy, etc. Words are powerful, especially when they are coming from you. Children internalise the negatives we say to them or call them. Say them often enough, and you are digging a pit of shame for your child so deep and so wide, it will take them a lifetime to crawl out of it. Shaming a child causes mental health problems later in life. Super Nanny did parenting a great disservice. Get rid of that ‘naughty’ corner/chair/mat. Do it right now!!! Call it a ‘calm down zone’ or ‘chill-out chair’. Be creative but make it positive. Remove ‘naughty’ and ‘bad’ from your vocabulary. And now for your challenge…Put these 4 tools into action at your place, and see how things change for the better. But wait, there’s more! If you can’t get to the 6 week Triple P parenting group, I am offering the Triple P seminars in May. Come to one or all of them. 12th May – The power of positive parenting 19th May – Raising confident and competent children 26th May – Raising resilient children Go to handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/parenting-groupsand-workshops for more details. “Like” us on FaceBookhttps:// www.facebook.com/ParentingInPenrith

Warragamba Debutante Ball Last month, Warragamba brought an old tradition into the present with a spectacular outcome. The Warragamba Debutante Ball as a part of Youth Week 2014 was an incredible success, showing that old ways can blend with the new and that the youth of today still has the capacity to enjoy traditional events. The nine young ladies and their partners, all in their midteens, worked for nearly 3 months to perfect the classic dances and their formal roles in the event. Every parent in the room watched with pride as their young adult children were introduced to the community. Wollondilly Councillor Hilton Gibbs and Matron of Honour Sandra Harlor “accepted the young ladies into society” and passed them onto their immaculate escorts.

Cr Gibbs representing the Mayor was amazed at the turnout and incredibly impressed with the grandeur of the Hall. “This is just fantastic,” he said. “this event, the Hall, everything - it’s great to see such a sensational event in such a great hall. Well done to the organisers and Warragamba”. As always Warragamba Town Hall was an amazing venue and the room actually sparkled for the occasion. The event, organised for Warragamba Netball, by Lisa Doolan, is the Club’s major fundraiser and has been run biannually for the last few years. Back in the 1980’s and 90’s it was held almost every year due to the demand, but as time passed it became less popular. The tradition seems to be coming back into fashion - for the Warragamba Silverdale area anyway.

MONEY MATTER$ With Mark Stevenson Nepean Financial Ph: 1300 729 692 Email: mark@nepfin.co Web: www.nepfin.co

Getting the Timing Right With the end of the financial year fast approaching, now is the time to speak with your accountant about any plans to purchase new vehicles or equipment for your business. You may be eligible to claim the GST refund and depreciation this financial year – and for small and medium businesses this can make a big difference. When it comes to finance for your personal car, business vehicles and equipment it’s important to compare the repayments and not just the rate. Comparing rates alone can often be deceiving. Here are our tips for making sure you’ve got the best deal on your vehicle and equipment loans. 1. Check your current contracts: Go grab your current finance contract now. Take a minute to check for the actual rate, additional fees charged and any ongoing fees. 2. Arrange your finance beforehand: This allows you to negotiate the best price on your new vehicle or equipment, without being sold finance at the dealership. Finance arranged at place of purchase is usually the most expensive and least competitive. 3. Be aware of low or no interest sales gimmicks: There is no such thing as a free lunch. These campaigns are designed to draw you in, however the true cost is often more than you think. 4. Speak with a professional: To ensure you have the appropriate product, the right structure and the lowest repayments. Nepean Financial offer free loan reviews and have a large range of vehicle and equipment lenders.

Method 1. Place the flour in a large bowl and make a well in the centre. Add the egg and buttermilk and stir until well combined. Set aside for 30 minutes to rest. 2. Melt half the butter in a large non-stick frying pan over medium heat. Spoon 1/4 cup (60ml) of pancake mixture into the pan and sprinkle with mixed berries. Cook for 1 minute or until bubbles appear on the surface and pancakes are golden underneath. Turn and cook for 1 minute or until golden underneath. Transfer to a plate and cover with foil. Repeat with remaining batter and mixed berries, greasing pan between each batch. 3. Place the maple syrup in a small saucepan. COUNSELLING CORNER with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com I’m sure you will agree that some relationships are hard work. It seems that we are programmed to remember the times people have hurt us or done the ‘wrong’ thing by us rather than the many times that we have enjoyed their company. We then go on and ‘demonize’ people - gossiping that they have no good in them at all. In truth none of us are ‘all good’ and none of us are ‘all bad’ Instead of being all white or all black, we are grey - a mixture of getting it right with others and also hurting those we love as well. We take the high moral ground and cut these people out of our life. And if it happens to be a family member, this rift might not be able to fixed in one’s life time. Further it has repercussions on other’s in the family who are not directly involved. In truth we humans are not very good at loving. So a challenge to each of us to make the world a better place is to only say things about others that we are prepared to say to their face. A wise person passed this onto me as a guideline line to use when speaking about others. 1. Is what you are going to say about the person true? 2. Is what you are going to say about the other necessary to say? 3. Is what you are going to say about the other kind? If you can answer yes to these three questions, then speak about the other person. If what you are going to say doesn’t reach this criteria, then safe guard your integrity and the relationship with the other, and make the world a kinder, gentler, forgiving place and keep your mouth closed.

Community Needs More Detail on Airport Now that a decision to build Sydney’s second airport at Badgerys Creek has been announced, we wait for more detailed plans to be revealed. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said that Council had made numerous calls for details on the range and scope of the airport to be revealed so that proper planning for infrastructure could be started in earnest. “Council conducted a community opinion survey recently and found 7 out of 10 local residents indicated that Penrith would be better off with the development of the airport at Badgerys Creek,” Cr Fowler said. “Council has consistently called for more information on the second Sydney airport proposal and these results are indicative of a community which is awaiting this information.” Prime Minister Tony Abbott last month announced more than $3 billion will be spent on roads in Western Sydney to support the city’s second airport, and that is a good start,” Cr Fowler said. “There will undoubtedly be economic benefits from the airport, but those benefits must accrue to the local community as well as the region and NSW,” he said. “In order for the benefits to flow to the people of Penrith, proper infrastructure provision must be made to support the airport and Western Sydney. “There will also be social and environmental impacts and these also need to be addressed.” Cr Fowler said that when more detail on the Badgerys Creek airport and its associated infrastructure is released, Council will be able to inform and engage further with our community.
