Mulgoa Charity Jazz Night The 13th Annual Charity Jazz Night and Mulgoa Idol is taking place on the 7th of May 2016. Dr Adrian Sheen and the Mulgoa Road Jazz Band are once again hosting an amazing event where money will be raised for charity. This year, funds are being raised for Vatu Health Fiji to assist in the aftermath of Cyclone Winston. Vatu Health was set up in 2015 and is “about raising funds to support Primary Care in the Coral Coast region.” Dr Adrian Sheen has said that “Cyclone Winston will have very long term effects on health and the health system.” Dr Sheen said “The loss of homes, business and crops will take a very long time to restore. Clean water is needed. The lack of power will greatly affect pump drinkable water and this could well result in the spread of disease.” A night of entertainment for a worthy cause. FROM THE EDITOR
I am writing this in sheer disbelief that we have already arrived at April, with Easter now behind us! We’re on the cusp of school holidays and another term has passed. Before long, it will be Mother’s Day and not to wish the year away, but winter is creeping across the hill as we speak. This month’s edition has some wonderful stories, none less than our story about Mr Bruce, his dedication and his many years of service on page 5. In 2015 an estimated 536,423 volunteers removed 15,915 tonnes of rubbish at 7,232 sites across the country. We are very proud of the efforts of all our local volunteers who took it upon themselves to ‘Clean Up Our Area’ last month. See page 4 for more details. On page 8, you will find all the latest happenings with the many proposed changes soon to take place at Luddenham. We have lots of regular articles for your reading pleasure, and loads of activities listed in our Community Calendar on page 13. Remember, it’s okay to not be okay, all the time. How true that is! Enjoy your month, and your Community News.

On the 2nd of April 2016, Janine Louise and her team at JLM Management held an evening of “exploring the Residual and Active spiritual energy that embodies the spectacular homestead of Fernhill Estate which is situated on 654 hectares of land in Mulgoa. Janine Louise and her team hosted exclusive tours at Fernhill Estate where they explored the “enchanting energy that is experienced through the grounds, the halls and the cellar. Fernhill has only had six owners which dates back to the time of William Cox and his family. Fernhill has over 200 years of stories and history. By attending the tours, attendees learnt about the “differences in energies surrounding the homestead and learnt of the many experiences had by those who have stayed, lived or worked there, These experiences are explored alongside the experiences Janine Louise and her team have experienced. Attendees had the opportunity to “enjoy an evening with a Medium and her team and the chance to roam the homestead exploring its many beauties. Janine Louise was born with the “natural abilities of mediumship and psychic awareness. Clean Up Our Area Day

Changes Ahead for St Mulgoa Anglican Parish
Thomas
All of us face changes in our lives, and often that can be a real challenge as we are pushed out of our comfort zone. It’s no different for Christians, and some big changes are afoot for members of the local Anglican Churches. Sadly, Rev Matt Olliffe resigned from his role as Senior Minister at the end of February, due to ongoing health problems. Matt and his family arrived in October 2009, and have been a much loved part of the local community since that time. He is greatly missed by regulars at Church and many others he was in contact with in the community. But we know that God is in control, and He has Matt’s and the Church’s future well in hand. And that means that those who trust in Him need not fear change in this life, because we know that when it comes to the really important things, God is unchanging. So the situation that Mulgoa Anglican Churches find themselves in is a great opportunity to live out our trust in God, and think strategically about the future. And while the longer term direction of the local Church is still being thought and prayed through, we are very fortunate to have Rev John Lavender from Glenmore Park Anglican Church, as the Acting Senior Minister. With much development activity starting to take place in different parts of Mulgoa Parish (Warragamba, Silverdale, and in the near future around Luddenham), the local Churches have the exciting opportunity to reach out to the many new people flowing into the area in the future. We do not yet know how this might work, but we know that God does, and so we place our trust in Him, knowing that He loves nothing more than to see people come into relationship with Him through His son Jesus. In the meantime, we pray both for Matt and his family, for a full recovery, and for the next phase in the life of Mulgoa Anglican Churches. Norton’s Basin, off Silverdale Road, is a lovely peaceful place to swim with a small waterfall on the river. Unfortunately all the rubbish left there spoils the area. Local resident Kristy Debattista and her partner Adam Laing decided to register the area for Clean Up Australia Day. Another ten volunteers turned up and five people went over to Farnsworth Ave in Warragamba to clean up the rubbish there. Kristy’s group cleaned up the car park and the road and then ventured down the steep rocky hill collecting rubbish along the way. Kristy said “We were able to fill a garbage bag by the time we got half way down. We cleaned up the basin and most people had a cool off swim as it was a very hot day. Getting back up the hill with about 9 garbage bags full of rubbish was tiring but with great teamwork we got up there. In total there was about 25 garbage bags full of rubbish from the Basin area and Farnsworth Ave’ Thanks to Kristy, Adam and volunteers, including Christine Maude, Melissa and Kai Brown, Daniel McCarthy-Mills, Lewis and Mick Looyschelder. Farewell Mr Bruce! Mr Bruce!â€? to which Mr Bruce responded using his name. The student was so shocked that he knew his name and thought he was “so cleverâ€? however‌. Mr Bruce was just reading his name from his drink bottle. Mr Bruce was able to build some incredible relationships with students over the years and remembers when a set of twins who were in Year 3 told him that it was “their birthday coming up on Friday!â€?. Mr Bruce asked “Is your birthday on the 17th of November?â€? they responded “yes!â€? When Mr Bruce told them that it was his birthday on the 17th of November as well they simply said “No Mr Bruce! It can’t be your birthday because it is our birthday!â€? The relationships that Mr Bruce was able to create with the students during their time at Regentville did not end when they left the school. Mr Bruce can recall many occasions where he has been recognized by past students when simply out at the grocery store or at the bank. Seeing past students now return to Regentville as Parents of current students, Mr Bruce is reminded of the large and close knit community that he has tirelessly contributed to over the past 36 years. About 8 years ago, due to his tireless effort and continued hard work, Mr Bruce received the greatest recognition of all. He was simply told “You have to dress a little better for assembly on Friday.â€? It was shortly revealed that he was to receive the State Award for his efforts. Mr Bruce looks forward to going on holidays and “just enjoying his retirement at homeâ€? with his family and friends and looks forward to meeting many students over the coming years from Regentville Public School.
After 36 years as General Assistant at Regentville Public School, Mr Bruce Chamberlin has retired. After all this time, one can only imagine the memories and experiences he would have had and the contribution and influence he provided to the school. When local Wallacia resident, fondly named “Mr Bruce by the students of the school, started at Regentville Public School there were only 50 students and 2 teachers. Now, 36 years later the school is significantly bigger with over 700 students. When asked what would have to be his funniest memory at Regentville Mr Bruce could only mention the Kindergarten kids and the hilarious things they come up with. One fond memory was when a new Kindy student went up to him and said “Hello

PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 0409 986121 or 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
Parent Traps A “parent trap is a behaviour that parents do that encourages their children’s mistaken behaviour. Parents can actually set their children up for failure. Listed below are three “parent traps to be aware of in your daily interactions with your children. #1 Focusing on the negative The more attention you pay to negative behaviours the more your child will do of them. Forty years of research tells us that paying attention to children’s negative behaviours encourages them to do more of them. Children are hard-wired for attention. It’s all about survival – look at me, remember to feed me and look after me. What kind of attention (and thus behaviour) would you prefer – positive or negative? Make a big effort to pay more attention to what your children are doing well, for example, playing well, speaking kindly to each other, packing away their things, and putting their clothes in the wash basket. #2 It’s all about the praise The “good boy/girl/job type of praise makes kids praise junkies. They love it but it doesn’t tell them what they are doing well. It makes them more dependent on you. Praise your children by telling them what they are doing well. For example, “I appreciate you putting the clothes in the wash basket, that makes it so much easier for me, and “that is a clever idea, I can see that you put a lot of thought into figuring that out. This is called “Descriptive Praise and it helps to develop a well-rounded sense of self, and encourage thinking and independence. Remember to make it genuine and sincere. #3 Making children feel bad about themselves will make them correct their behaviour Calling kids names, yelling and screaming at them, harsh criticism, and putting them down, creates an internal sense of shame that can lead to mental health problems in adolescence and adulthood. When did you ever do better when someone made you feel bad about yourself? Make your home a “be kind zone where nobody is allowed to call others names or put them down. Home should be an emotionally safe place for children and parents. Stay tuned for more parent traps next month.

Early this term, all of the students at Wallacia Public School entered the Say No to Bullying Primary School Poster Competition sponsored by Interrelate. In 2016, the competition theme was “Differences Make Us Special. Don’t Bully.” The competition was open to all NSW Primary Schools. Students were invited to draw a picture depicting their interpretation of the competition theme. The competition was an ideal classroom activity for the start of the school year as it assisted teachers to identify and address bullying behaviours by encouraging an open discussion about bullying, diversity and differences. The competition Award Ceremony was held last month on the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence at the Concourse in Chatswood. The Winner, Finalists, Highly Commended recipients, their families and a school representative were all invited to attend this event. Congratulations are in order for two Wallacia Public School students, Katie Astley (Year 4) and Katelyn Smith (Year 5), whose work was selected as Highly Commended. Given the number of students who entered, this is a great achievement. Katelyn Smith and Katie Astley. Image supplied. continued from pg. 1

Mulgoa Charity Jazz Night Dr Sheen will be travelling to Fiji in July to continue his voluntary work which he does every year. However, he has said that the easiest way for the community to assist in this effort, is to provide unwanted clothing. If anyone is travelling to the main island of Fiji and is willing to take some extra clothing, please contact Annie Doyle for more information on 0409 157 097. The Mulgoa Charity Jazz Night along with Mulgoa Idol is an amazing opportunity to have a night of fun with excellent company and good music while tirelessly working to raise funds for the Fijian Community. This year, the Mulgoa Idol will include a range of talents from “classical clarinet, solo cello and a left handed violinist.” The Mulgoa Jazz Night and Mulgoa Idol, is a fun night which is enjoyed by all who strive to achieve a common purpose. Dr Sheen has said “Every year is different. Every year is fun. The prize is a mug- but it is always keenly sought after and proudly displayed.” The 13th Annual Charity Jazz Night will be taking place at Twin Creeks Golf & Country Club and includes a night of great entertainment and an incredible dinner. All proceeds from the evening will benefit the Fijian Communities who have been affected by Cyclone Winston. Science Park one step closer. Image supplied.
Our new Science Park is now another step closer with Environmentalist giving the Green Light to the proposed development in Luddenham Road, covering 280 hectares, it will be one of the largest centres of its type. It will comprise 340,000sqm of commercial space, 100,000sqm for education providers, 3,400 dwellings, a town centre, urban lakes, cultural precinct and extensive recreational facilities. Celestino Developments are building the Luddenham Park and are owned by the Baiada family, owners of Steggles and Lilydale. The construction value alone is estimated to be $2.5billion. The site is actually 4km from Elizabeth Drive and the old Bangaroo Farm site. With most of Stage 1 of the Western Sydney Airport being in Luddenham Residents are awaiting the Final EIS that is scheduled to be released within in the next 2 months, with work supposedly starting soon after.

A Roads and Maritime Services spokesperson has told me that “more than 300 people attended the recent information sessions highlighting a high level of interest in the projects which will transform road connections in Western Sydney”. They also said “Transport for NSW is currently processing community feedback from last year’s exhibition on the M9 outer orbital and technical investigations to refine options are continuing”. This corridor is of major concern to Local Residents and it will be interesting to see the options when released later this year. Spondylolisthesis Pain. What can be Done About it? Many people come to the clinic with back pain, their scans showing they have a condition called spondylolisthesis. That’s a big word but it simply means, one vertebra has slipped forward compared to the one above or below it. If you followed last month’s article you’ll already know: Every vertebra has two bony arches (one on the left, one on the right), which connect the front of the vertebra to the back half; About 6% of the general population have a break in at least one arch; This break is called a pars defect. Pars defects are more common in athletes playing certain sports, and they occur mostly in the ‘lower back’ (i.e. L4 & L5). The two bony arches are very important, because they stop the front half of a vertebra (called the vertebral body) from slipping forward. But when a person has a break in both the left and right arches, a vertebra may forward. This is especially so for the lowest 2 lumbar vertebra because they both sit on a large forward incline. Under these circumstances, any extra weight or stress on the spine from sport, heavy work or trauma can result in abnormal stretching of the ligaments and joint capsules that hold the vertebra in place. This may lead to a permanent forward slipping of one or more vertebra, as well as impingement of either the spinal cord or a nerve root exiting form the spinal column causing pain and other symptoms. Spondylolisthesis can be graded from 1-4 depending on how far forward a vertebra has slipped. The symptoms, often related to degree of slip, may include: Back or buttock pain, pain that runs from the lower back down one or both legs, numbness or weakness in one or both legs, difficulty walking, leg, back, or buttock pain that gets worse when you bend over or twist, loss of bladder or bowel control, rarely. When a vertebra has slipped forward only minutely, the bony bridges may heal by themselves, if re-injury is avoided and back muscles elongated. The larger the slip the more likely a person will have symptoms and in severe cases surgical procedures may be required to directly repair of the pars, sometimes accompanied by a fusion procedure (Syrmou 2010) . But even with relatively large slips, releasing muscles locked around the spine can reduce inflammation & provide greater flexibility of the torso. Together this reduces the impact of bending and twisting and may lead to a considerable reduction in symptoms, to the point where surgery may not be required. If you have unresolved back pain, why not come talk to us at BHW - see our ad for contact details.

COUNSELLING CORNER Article Written + Submitted by: Linda Cassell from Psychology Works 4 All P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com
People usually don’t insult you directly. If they did, you could say something right back and be done with it. Instead, people use indirect methods of insult, so that you are confused and unsure of what happened. In that case, it usually dawns on you too late to do anything about it. The indirect insult allows people to act out their aggression without taking responsibility for it. Below are some hidden insults to look out for. 1. Disqualifications. Disqualifications usually begin with a cautionary statement. “Now don’t take this the wrong way.” Then comes the insult. 2. Jokes. Insults can often be hidden within a joke. A person might say, “I’m just joking. Don’t be so serious!” “OMG you can’t even have a joke with you!” 3. Backhanded Compliments. “Oh, I just love the way you weasel your way out of things,” your spouse may say to you. And you are confused. On one hand, you like being complimented, but you’re not sure it’s a compliment, and you find yourself becoming angry. 4. Guilt-Tripping. Guilt-tripping is another indirect way of insulting someone. Instead of saying to you, “I feel hurt that you don’t help me more,” the guilt-tripper moans, “I feel so tired all the time from doing all the housework myself. Instead of feeling sympathetic, you feel angry and then feel guilty about being angry. 5. Teasing. Teasing is all in good fun, isn’t it? Children often tease each other such as when older siblings tease younger siblings. It can also happen with adults, as when a husband teases his wife in front of his guy friends or a wife teases her husband in front of her girlfriends. These are just a few of a multitude of sneak attacks people make all the time, all in seemingly good fun. With each of these examples there is a barb at the centre that is hidden by the wrapping of non-threatening words. It is sometimes not easy to come back with a rejoinder when you are taken by surprise. Therefore it is good to rehearse by yourself or with a friend to be prepared for the next attack.

PAWS A WHILE Article written + submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027
Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital New Veterinarian!! We are still growing!! Yay!! We have employed another veterinarian to accommodate the growth of the business. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital would like to welcome Dr Jonathan Young to the team. He has six years experience in small animal practice, and has undertaken further education in surgery, diagnostic imaging, dermatology, and feline medicine. He is competent in dental procedures, soft-tissue surgery, and in the long-term care of dogs with Cushing's disease (hyperadrenocorticism) and diabetes. His current passion is in refining his approach to all aspects of feline and canine medicine. He will take the time to tailor the health care for each individual pet and pet-owner. In his spare time he takes his folks out for lunch and likes to grow vegetables in their backyard. His interest in veterinary science probably started from looking after many critters whilst growing up, including mice, budgerigars, zebra finches, ducks, Black Moor goldfish, Dwarf rabbits, and house-sitting for his friends' dogs and cats. He hopes one day to have a house with an automatic sensor tap, so that his cat can have flowing springwater any time of the day. Dr Theresa Pizzuto is Coming Back off Maternity Leave Theresa has been on maternity leave for 12 months and will be returning part-time June/July 2016. We look forward to having her back at work.
Leo the Guide Dog Puppy Camille is a puppy raiser for the Guide Dogs. She has been looking after Leo since October. The Guide Dogs have organized numerous outings for the puppies, and 6 puppies came to the Off Leash Park at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital for a group training session. During this training session, the puppies tried on the Guide Dog Harnesses for the first time. They looked so cute!! Leo will be returned to The Guide Dogs when is about 1 year of age, where he will continue his training and hopefully succeed as a Guide Dog. For more information: www.guidedogs.com.au. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.
