Christmas Card Winners Announced Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP has announced the winners of the 2014 Mulgoa Christmas Card Competition. Tanya Davies approached local schools earlier this year to invite them to be a part of the competition. All interested students submitted artworks, competing to be the winning entry to be used as Tanya Davies' Christmas card that will be sent to various members of our community. The students were asked to recognise the special Christmas season in some way and Tanya Davies encouraged students to be creative, humorous or reflective of the local area or local people. The overall winner this year was Miss Aiyana Cabanero, a Year 5 student from Montgrove College, who submitted a traditional Christmas drawing of mother Mary cradling her baby Jesus. Aiyana was presented with a framed certificate and a $100 voucher to ToysRUs in front of her fellow students at afternoon assembly last week. As well as the overall winner, Tanya Davies awarded winners from each of the following three categories and presented them with a framed certificate and a gift voucher to ToysRUs: Most Creative – Gemma Benson from Clairgate Public School, who continued ...Pg.10

5 minutes with BRITTANIE SHIPWAY I had the chance to catch a quick 5 minutes with local (and truly wonderful) singer and songwriter, Brittanie Shipway who is set to release a new single this month. Here's what she had to say. What is the name of your new single? It’s Over When and where will it be released? December 16, with an exclusive Single Launch at Hanks Seafood Restaurant in Penrith Panthers. (Hop onto Brittanie’s Facebook page for tickets) What are the musical influences behind the single? I definitely wanted my first single to be a big pop ballad, something that showed off vocal ability but still had relatable content. It’s a cross between an Ariana Grande and Jessica Mauboy ballad; it’s a different sound from the musical theatre that people heard from me on The Voice, but it’s a song that encapsulates a lot of the pop charts at the moment. Where will the music video be filmed? It was filmed last month and set on the beautiful Fernhill Estate; it just seemed like the perfect setting for the single. Will you be releasing the single on iTunes? It’s Over will debut in iTunes on December 16 and the music video will be available on my YouTube channel (Brittanie Shipway) before it hits the silver screen! There’ll be heaps of giveaways and prizes available on my Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts before Christmas, so make sure you follow to keep up to date. Tell us about your plans for 2015. There are so many opportunities on the horizon, it’s just about going after them! Songwriting is definitely something I would like to pursue further; I’m currently working on a jazz-pop song along the lines of a Meghan Trainor and Paloma Faith. I’ve also fell in love with the world of cabaret, and would love to follow in my coach (from The Voice Australia) Kylie’s footsteps and perform at next year’s Mardi Gras! I can’t wait to dip my toes back into my roots and start acting again‌ Watch out Neighbours!

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH of MULGOA Minister Matt Olliffe P: 4774 0422 M: 0401 958 161 Sunday Service times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba
An Expensive Christmas Christmas is expensive. Of course there are all those presents we must buy. Then there are the decorations, from the Christmas tree to the pretty LED lights. There are all the parties throughout December, the work Kris Kringle, and the restaurant Christmas lunch. Some people still send Christmas cards. And there are the mountains of food that culminate in the massive Christmas day lunch and dinner. Some sectors of the economy depend on the Christmas retail expenditure for their viability. Nothing in life is free, and Christmas is no exception. But still, Christmas is about giving. The gifts that we purchase are expensive, but they are still gifts. We intend to give the gift to someone we love. We don’t make them pay for the gifts we give them. The gift is free to that person, but not free to us. Often, we think stuff that’s ‘free’ is rubbish, but not at Christmas time. The gift we give has cost us. It was not free. And the free gift that we receive has cost someone we love money, time and thought. Often the better and more appropriate the gift, the more thought, time, or perhaps even money, that has gone into the gift. Christmas reminds us about Christ. Just look at the first 6 letters of the word ‘Christmas’! No matter how much secular society is embarrassed by the fact of Christmas, unless they completely rub out the name (which some try to do with ‘Seasons Greetings’ and ‘Happy Holiday’), the word Christmas points to Christ. Jesus Christ, according to Christianity, was God’s greatest gift. God our creator has given us everything we have: life, health, safety, work, rest, friendship, and everything that is beautiful in creation and human life. If God doesn’t give it, we don’t have it. But according to the bible, the greatest gift God has given us his own Son, Jesus Christ. ‘God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes him should not perish but have eternal life’ (John 3:16). The gift of giving Jesus Christ to the world was expensive and costly, because God sent his Son into the world to pay the price for our many sins by his death on the cross. It really cost Jesus to come into the world and die for us. It cost God his Father too, because God loves his only Son. Nothing in life is free. It might be free to us, but someone has had to pay the price. Salvation is free to us, if we would but trust in Jesus Christ. But it is costly. Salvation cost God his only Son, whom God freely gave for the life of the world. Don’t waste the wonderful Christmas gift God gave by ignoring Jesus Christ. Don’t treat Jesus Christ as just more ‘free’ stuff that is rubbish and not worth a second thought. Instead, set apart Jesus Christ as precious, valuable, and expensive. The free gift of salvation might be free to us, through faith in Christ, but it was very costly for God. Matt Olliffe, Minister Anglican Parish of Mulgoa

FAITH – WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH Lyndon Rumsey P: 4774 1476 M: 0417174455 W: www.warragambabaptist.org.au Sunday Service: 9.30 am
Pastors Corner The story of the first Christmas is familiar to many of us. It is a story that tells of a young couple Joseph and Mary. A census has been called and they travel from Nazareth to Bethlehem. Mary is pregnant and the birth is imminent. Like many parents at such a time, they are anxious, Bethlehem is busy, and there is no room at the inn for them to stay, so a stable will be the birth place for this child. A baby boy is born and he is to be called Jesus. The Magi come, they have been following a star, and they bring gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. For some of us that it is, just a nice first Christmas story, and as such we are happy to leave the story with the image of the baby Jesus. The story does not finish there in that stable it really is only the beginning. This boy named Jesus is God’s Son, God’s love has come down to us, and it is for a purpose. Jesus came to provide us with an escape from God’s judgement, to stand in our place for our sins, to bring forgiveness for what we have done wrong (big things like murder, little things like not telling the complete truth or not loving others and ignoring God’s ways). Jesus died on the Cross for each of us, he took our place. For some, Christmas is a time of loneliness, our family and friends may be overseas or elsewhere; perhaps too we grieve the loss of loved ones, who have passed away, their absence still is painful; Some of us may struggle financially it can be a time of considerable expense; Then there are those important relationships that have broken down, you were hurt, so you never see or speak to each other.
D & M FAMELI CONSTRUCTIONS
May I encourage you this Christmas to put Jesus at the forefront of your celebrations, make Him the Lord of your life; include others in your family celebrations; share generously what you have with others; and learn to forgive those that have hurt you. The message of Jesus is so much more than a story of a little baby born in a stable in Bethlehem, it is about Jesus the Son of God who loves us, sacrificed for us, and forgives us. May you experience peace and joy this Christmas, God bless, Lyndon Rumsey

10 Tips for Encouraging Kids to Eat Veggies! Summer time = Salads. Yay! No more stodgy veggies. It’s time for fresh, crunchy, and healthy salads. No? The kids are not so enthusiastic? The headline of a recent publication spoke of “Battling Penrith’s Bulge”. You are probably tired of hearing it, but Penrith has very high obesity rates. They top the State. 60% of our adults and kids are obese. And I know that it’s not a favourite topic in Penrith because every time I post something about eating healthy food on facebook (Parenting In Penrith) I get very few views on that post compared to other topics about parenting. But encouraging your kids to eat more healthy food is just as much about good parenting as listening, setting limits, and providing guidance and support. Here are 10 tips for getting kids to eat more veggies based on the research… 1. Google “Dr Ellyn Satter” and have a read about her work on “the division of responsibility”. It’s your responsibility to offer good tucker, it’s your child’s responsibility to eat it. Check it out, and stop offering your kids chicken nuggets and chips every night because “that’s all they will eat”. 2. Food process the veggies and put them in your homemade rissoles, spaghetti bolognaise, and nachos. It’s up to you whether you tell the kids or not. I prefer to be honest with my kids. 3. They are watching you. Be a good role model for how to eat healthy. Sorry Mums, but it has been found that you are the biggest influence on your child’s eating habits. The Cancer Council NSW has found that 95% of adults are not getting enough veggies on a daily basis. Kids are far too savvy these days to swallow the line “do as I say not as I do”. 4. Have meals at the table together as a family. Switch off the TV and the other screens and devices. 5. Offer cheese, dips, dressing, and sauces with veggies and salad. 6. Talking to children about the science of healthy eating helps them to make better food choices. Talking about how veggies grow, vitamins, minerals, fibre, fats, protein, the body, energy, and brain power, has been shown to increase veggie consumption even in pre-schoolers. But remember, it’s no good just telling them, you also have to show them (tip number 3). 7. Give veggies cool names like “Xray Carrots” and “Tomato Bursts”. And believe it or not, watching Popeye has been shown to increase children’s interest in eating spinach. It just goes to show how much television influences our children. One of my sons started eating better after watching the documentary “Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead”. 8. Offer veggies over and over again, so they get used to them. Give lots of descriptive praise when your kids taste and eat veggies. 9. Get kids involved in growing, shopping for, choosing, preparing, and cooking veggies. 10. Offering water at meal time instead of juice, gives kids a better taste for eating veggies. Juice has lots of sugar and no fibre, and isn’t a good drink for kids. Good luck!

Get Ready, Get Set and Go-Kart in Penrith! Penrith will now add racing to the suite of adrenaline charged activities available in the area, with stage one of a new go-kart and motorsport centre now open in Luddenham. After eight months of construction and several setbacks due to extreme weather conditions, stage one of the Luddenham Raceway development opened in November. The first stage of the development includes a 600m procircuit and a 200m track for junior racers aged 8-14. State of the art timing systems, track safety and lighting systems have been installed and special designed go-karts imported from Germany will be driven on the tracks. A high-tech visitor centre has also been built on site, which includes a cafe and lounge area where family, friends and colleagues can watch each other race on large screens. The visitor centre also has a large function room which is available to hire for parties and conferences. There are also plans to finalise construction of stages two and three of the development next year. This includes a 1400m track for driver training and other motor sports activities and also a Paintball Park. Penrith City Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said it’s great to see another thrill seeking tourist attraction open in Penrith. “Penrith is well established as an adventure destination where visitors can sky dive, go white-water rafting, wakeboarding or get behind the controls of a jet aircraft,” Cr Fowler said. “Now, whether you’re young or old, an experienced driver or a novice; if you have a passion or an interest in racing, you can put your pedal to the metal at a world-class racing facility right here in Penrith.” For more information: Phone: 0419 207 421 Email: info@luddenhamraceway.com Visit: facebook.com/luddenhamraceway

The response I received for the competition this year has been positively extraordinary. I am really impressed with the high quality of entries; making this year’s competition the toughest to judge, as so many entries were worthy of recognition.” Tanya Davies said.
Christmas Trivia Christmas cards are an English innovation. They were originally penned by boys who were practicing their writing skills and they would present these handmade cards to their parents.

Summer Survival With over 300,000 backyard swimming pools in NSW, swimming pool safety is a vital issue that affects the whole community. Supervising young children in and around swimming pools and developing water confidence through water familiarisation programs can save lives. In the last 10 years in NSW 60 children have died in backyard swimming pools and 70 children have neurological damage as a result of immersion in backyard swimming pools. To help protect our children swimming pool laws have changed. From the 29th April 2015 all properties with a swimming pool or spa pool that are sold or leased must have a valid swimming pool certificate of compliance. For further information download all the fact sheets at bepoolsafe.com.au. To register your pool visit: www. swimmingpoolregister.nsw.gov.au. “Supervised children never drown. Be prepared, be close, give all of your attention all of the time and enjoy this coming summer season in safety said Tanya Davies MP.

HEALTH MATTERS Article by: Andreas Klein – Beautiful Health & Wellness Ph: 0418 166 269
Helping Chronic Knee Pain Many people today suffer knee pain from various causes. Serious knee injuries with cartilage or ligament damage may require surgery, and rehab. But knee pain can also arise from simple thigh-muscle-tightness following overuse; excess body-weight; or chronic inflammation e.g. osteoarthritis. Regardless of the cause, chronic knee pain can make it difficult to walk, stop you working, playing, and doing many of the things you love, again leaving you frustrated when you can’t resolve it. As with chronic back pain (see last month’s article), chronic knee pain is sometimes simply due to unresolved inflammation. Let’s see how it may happen: Both osteoarthritis or an overuse injury can affect muscles and connective tissues around the knee. The injured cells release compounds into surrounding knee tissues, which become inflamed and painful to touch. Swelling inside muscle compartments, connective tissues & the knee joint itself reduces blood & lymph flow. This keeps toxins in & sustains the cycle of inflammation & pain. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications can help, but many people still have considerable knee pain even when on medication. In many instances the solution lies in: 1. Removing the inflammatory build-up in tissues & 2. Freeing up muscles & connective tissues around the knee. Often, once the inflammatory fluids have been cleared, knee pain lessens considerably and in some cases disappears altogether . In this way a technique such as ‘Muscle Elongation Therapy’ can help target the cause of knee pain, allowing for much greater pain free movement and in some cases eliminating pain completely.

Weight loss Hypnosis Transform your life
Can Hypnosis Rewire Sugar Cravings? With all of the weight loss options around today, it’s no surprise that some have looked to hypnosis to shed extra kilos. Successful hypnosis advocates say that it’s helped them to reshape their thoughts about food, a key factor for maintaining weight loss. Sound interesting? Here are a few things to consider. We all know being over weight is unhealthy, so what stops us? Harvard University research shows up to 90% of the mind is unconscious. This is why when our brains are firing excitedly to ‘sugar’ its hard to break old patterns. Hypnosis is an altered state that allows new neural pathways to be rewired and change your thoughts about food. Before you agree to give Hypnosis a shot check your clinician is a registered member of the AHA.

Donnalene Psychic/Medium
with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com The myth of the perfect family is a burden many of us take to the grave, and at no time is it put under more stress than at Christmas. Conflicts and ambiguous feelings we’ve put on hold all year, bubble to the surface. Then there’s the eternal tug over who we’ll spend Christmas with. Your parents or your in-laws? Your divorced father or your mother? What if your kids decide to go to your ex-husband and his new wife, proving once and for all that they’ve abandoned you? Or, and this is true for a growing number of people, what if you have no one you really want to spend Christmas with? And finally, there’s the pressure to try to solve it all with Mastercard or Visa, to prove your love with dollars because you just don’t know how else to navigate the emotional rapids of relationships. Here are four emotional survival tips: 1. Ask yourself who you really want to spend Christmas with. Imagine that the Guilt-Free Fairy could wave her wand and no one would feel hurt or angry at your decision. Where would you feel truly accepted and at ease? Where would you laugh and be playful? 2. In terms of Christmas shopping, ask yourself whether you are buying each gift because the process gives you pleasure or out of obligation, and be realistic about your financial situation. 3. Use your time off to enjoy getting back to nature via a visit to the bush or beach 4. Spirituality is a natural antidepressant- so attend a church service and see the church at its most joyful! Enjoy this great festive season!

Have you Reviewed your Loans Lately? With Christmas and the New Year fast approaching, this time of year often brings with it the chance to reflect on the year that’s been and start making plans for the year ahead. Your focus may be on eating better, exercising more, spending less time at work and more time with family. For many, setting finances in order for the year ahead may not even make it onto the radar, but for those who do it provides an opportunity to possibly save thousands. When was the last time you had your loans reviewed by an accredited and qualified credit advisor? During January, we‘re offering customers the chance to receive a comprehensive home loan review. So while you enjoy your holidays with Family and Friends, we can prepare a personalised package for you that includes: • A comprehensive real estate report for your specific property, including an automated valuation estimate. • A detailed comparison of the top 3 loans in the market based on your specific circumstances. • A head to head analysis showing how much you could save by switching your home loan.
