Wollondilly HSC High Achievers for 2013 Last month a Mayoral Reception was held at Wollondilly Shire Council for the Higher School Certificate leavers who achieved a band 6. The students from the Wollondilly area received recognition from our Mayor, Cr Benn Banasik for their success during the HSC in 2013. Other HSC reception attendees included: Cr Judith Hannan, Mr Alan McManus the Head of School Services, Secondary from the Diocese of Wollongong as well as principals and representatives from local schools, parents and families of students. “It is great to see so many students from Wollondilly who have achieved a band 6 and from a variety of different high schools. It is often the case that students in Wollondilly need to travel a greater distance to attend school than in other regions, so their achievements show real dedication,” said Cr Benn Banasik.

Digital TV Retune in Wollondilly Wollondilly Shire Council, has been informed by the Australian Government – Department of Communications that Wollondilly is scheduled to undergo a channel change on 18 March. Viewers should retune their digital TV equipment on or after this date. If viewers are missing a free-to-air digital TV channel or channels after the retune date, they will need to retune. This is the final step in Australia’s successful move to digital-only TV, some TV channels will be changing frequencies. What Is The Retune? As the final step in Australia’s move to digital-only TV, some channels will be changing frequencies. After they’ve changed, you‘ll need to retune your digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder to find the channels that have moved. These moves will free up broadcasting spectrum so that it can be used for new services such as mobile broadband. Just like the switch to digital-only TV, the retune is being carefully planned to make sure the change is as easy as possible. Different areas will need to retune on different dates, so to find your date visit the website at www.digitalready.gov.au/ retune where you can sign up for a reminder SMS or email. Who Does It Affect? The retune will affect most TV viewers in Australia. But if you are watching TV via the Viewer Access Satellite Television (VAST) service, the retune won't affect you. If you watch your free-to-air channels via pay TV, your set-top box may be retuned for you by your provider. Some viewers may find some of their equipment will automatically detect changes to the channels and retune itself, or it may prompt them to retune. If you are missing a free-to-air digital TV channel or channels you will need to retune. How Do I Retune? Most people would have scanned for channels when they bought a new television – retuning follows the same process. It is often called “auto-tuning”, “auto-scanning” or something similar. Start by pressing the “menu” button on your remote then look for your “set-up” options. Next, try to select words like “channels” or “auto-tuning”. You might want to write down your favourite channel, program recording and parental lock settings before you retune, as retuning may delete these settings. People living in apartments may be using a shared antenna system. This system may need to be retuned before people can retune their individual TVs and TV equipment. If they are experiencing issues trying to retune their digital TV equipment after their retune date, they should first contact their property manager or body corporate. When Do I Retune? Your retune date depends on your location and the TV tower from which you are receiving your TV signal. To find your retune date, enter your address into the “Get retune info” box on the website at www.digitalready.gov.au/retune. You’ll need to retune your digital TV, set-top box or digital TV recorder on or after your area’s retune date. Some people within the same town or city will have different retune dates. This is because some areas may be serviced by a number of TV towers.

The retune will take place across Australia progressively until the end of 2014. Why Do I Need To Retune? Some free-to-air digital TV channels will move frequencies to make room for new services such as mobile broadband. You will need to retune your digital TV equipment on or after your retune date to keep receiving all the free-to-air digital TV channels available in your area. Service Disruptions There may be some disruptions to TV services in the days leading up to your retune date, due to work being conducted at the transmission site. Any disruptions are unlikely to last longer than a few hours. You don’t need to do anything during these temporary outages as your free-to-air digital TV channels will return after technical works are completed. Help And Advice If you are having difficulty retuning your equipment, check your manufacturer’s handbook for instructions on how to retune, ask a friend or family member to help you, visit the retune website at www.digitalready.gov.au/retune or call the Digital Ready Information Line on 1800 20 10 13, 8am to 10pm (AEST), 7 days. In the lead up to the retune date, we will be providing local community organisations with information so they can help spread the word. In some areas there will also be advertising. More Information Visit www.digitalready.gov.au/retune or call the Digital Ready Information Line on 1800 20 10 13, 8am to 10pm (AEST), 7 days.

ANGLICAN PARISH UPDATE Minister Matt Olliffe • Anglican Parish of Mulgoa • Phone: 4774 0422 • Mobile: 0401 958 161 Sunday Church times: 8:30am & 6.45pm St Thomas’ Mulgoa. 10:30am St Paul’s Warragamba.

St. Patrick: The Man, His Mission, & His Master Patrick (373?-463?), the ‘Apostle of Ireland’, and it’s second Bishop, has left us two works from his hand, his letter about Coroticus, a pirate who had captured, killed and enslaved many Irish youth, and his Confession, written in defence of his ministry late in his life. These are the most reliable sources for his life story. Patrick was born in Britain, the son of Calpornius, a freeman, local administrator and church deacon, and the grandson of a Christian priest. Yet despite this upbringing, Patrick says that he was ignorant of God for much of his childhood and adolescence. When he was not yet 16, he was captured by Irish pirates, enslaved, and forced to look after sheep for 6 years. It was during this time of hardship and humbling that Patrick came to know God. Remembering the Christian teaching he received as a child, He often prayed in the open, asking God for help, and remembering God’s many kindnesses. At about the age 21, Patrick had a dream that he would return to Britain by ship. He ran away, travelled 200 miles, and convinced a group of pagan sailors to take him along with them. Patrick distanced himself from their pagan practises. However, when through group arrived in Britain and were starving, their Captain resentfully said to Patrick, ‘What have you to say for yourself, Christian? You boast that your God is all powerful. So why can’t you pray for us...’, Patrick confidently told them, ‘Turn trustingly to the Lord who is my God... because nothing is impossible for him. On this same day, he will send us food sufficient for our journey, because for him there is abundance everywhere.’ And suddenly, a herd of pigs blocked their path! Dinner was honey pork roast that night! Patrick was enslaved by the sailors for two months until he escaped them and returned to his parents as their long lost son. They begged him not to leave them again. But Patrick had another dream at this time, a man coming from Ireland begging him to return. He heard the words ‘He who gave his own soul for you, he it is who now speaks within your soul’. Taking this as God’s call, he prepared himself for his ministry, perhaps by studying in France. Though relatively uneducated, he was consecrated by the English Bishops, and sent to Ireland. Ireland was a pagan country, where people worshipped idols. Though rustic and unschooled, Patrick had an effective ministry, and speaks of many thousands of the Irish coming to faith in Christ and being baptised in the Triune Name. He travelled across

the country far and wide. It seems he adopted Paul’s practice of as much as possible paying for his own ministry. He was also required to pay tribute to kings and those in authority. Once he was captured and imprisoned for 2 weeks. Nevertheless, over some 30 years, he baptised thousands, ordained priests to teach the people, and confirmed them in the faith. He saw himself as a ‘fisher of people’, teaching all the nations, and baptising in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:19-20). It was a pretty rough time, and during his Episcopacy, Coroticus and his band, supposedly Christian, came to Ireland, captured, pillaged and raped many of the young Irish people Patrick had discipled, and sold others into slavery or worse. Outraged, Patrick sent a trusted priest to plead with Coroticus to return the survivors and repent. When these pirates laughed in his face, Patrick wrote a circular letter denouncing and condemning Coroticus, warning him of the eternal punishment to come, and warning everyone away from him, unless he returns the survivors, and repents. Patrick clearly desires both the freedom of his beloved people and the restoration of the sinning gangsters as the best outcome. When Patrick was an old man, the English Bishops sent a delegation to attempt to revoke his episcopacy. This was initiated by Patrick’s former best friend. Patrick had done or thought something for one hour while he was 14 years old that troubled him greatly. Patrick divulged this unnamed sin, a lack of self-control, to his best friend before he was made deacon. This same friend said, ‘Mark my words, you are going to be made bishop’. For some reason, after many years later, and after Patrick’s successful ministry, Patrick’s friend took this matter to the English Bishops. It seems that for political reasons, probably because they were Pelagian, the British Bishops wanted to unseat Patrick and discredit his life’s work. Patrick’s Confession is really a confession of his faith and defence of his ministry. He believes in the Triune God, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, all powerful and ever living. He believes himself a great sinner saved by God’s grace. He confesses he has not led a perfect life, but that he is not ashamed before Christ. He is aware of the great judgment coming, where Christ will judge us for every careless word. He calls on the Christians among whom he has ministered to testify to his good name. And his hope is that we shall rise again in the glory of Christ Jesus, our Redeemer, as children of the living God and fellow heirs with Christ. He declares that whatever he has achieved for Christ is the gift of God, not his own achievement. Not a bad way to end, really. Matt Olliffe

The Good News of the Gospel Sometimes our world wants to create barriers, things like ethnicity, gender, age, any physical or emotional issues we carry, our employment status, and even our views concerning faith in God. Sometimes churches have been all too fast to create barriers that revolve around not so much what they believe, but how they practice their beliefs. In John’s Gospel we read that Jesus sat down to rest, at a well in Sychar. A Samaritan comes to draw water from the well, and Jesus asks her for a drink. The Samaritan woman replies “You are a Jew and I am a Samaritan woman. How can you ask me for a drink?” The woman’s response is because of the mutual hatred that Jews and the Samaritans had for each other; and that culturally, a man would not usually talk to an unknown or unrelated woman. Yet Jesus ignores both of these cultural barriers and talks openly with her. The Good News of the Gospel is contained in one verse John 3:16 “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” The message of Jesus Christ is one that sets each person free, where they will be able to find love and acceptance from the God of all creation. It comes through personal faith in Jesus Christ. God bless you in this journey. Lyndon Rumsey For the past 3 years Warragamba Baptist Church has held FREE computer and mobile phone courses for Seniors in the community. These courses have proven extremely popular and we would dearly love to continue them. Suggestions have been made that we run a course on Windows 8 and Smartphones. We are seeking expressions of interest for such courses. Please contact Judy on 0416 260 542 or 4733 3637 if this is something of interest to you.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

How are you settling into the new-ish year? With the kids back at pre/primary/high school, it’s onto sizzling routines, packing lunch boxes (sigh), washing school clothes, class information nights, notes from school, and lots of organising. It’s full-on isn’t it? Sometimes with all of this ‘doing’ we forget about ‘being’ with our kids. When do you make the time to just ‘be’ with your kids? Time that’s free of distractions, where you ‘hang-out’ and enjoy each other’s company, where there is space for them to talk about what matters to them (the big stuff and little stuff ) , and where you LISTEN. Some parents say their kids won’t talk to them, or they can’t get past the one word answers like ‘good’, ‘nothing’, ‘nowhere’, and ‘nobody’. I ask those parents if they make the time, and if they do, then do they shut-up? Kids clam up when parents pressure kids for answers, jump in and offer advice, rouse on them for getting things wrong when they’ve had a go. Kids are actually very smart and they can be supported to generate their own solutions to their problems – yes, even really little kids. I have spaces in the day where I am “with” my kids and fill it with my silence and my presence – the walk home from school, afternoon tea, a snuggle on the lounge, one-on-one time with each of the kids even if it is just grocery shopping. Silence is one of my favourite parenting tools, but with the silence comes my openness and willingness to listen and use reflection when my kids talk (for more information about this, go to the “Reflective Listening” post at handsheartsminds.wordpress.com). I recently asked a group of parents the qualities they value in a friend. They said someone who: • is non-judgemental • listens, listens, listens • doesn’t bombard you with advice • doesn’t blab on about their own stuff, or lecture • you can trust • cares You are not your child’s friend, but your role as a parent should offer the same kindness. When do you offer these qualities and ‘the time’ to your child?

Family School Offers Students ‘More than a Great Education’ Holy Family School, Luddenham will join more than 615 Catholic schools across NSW and the ACT to celebrate Catholic Schools Week, 9-15 March 2014. The theme for 2014 is ‘more than a great education’ and Holy Family School will offer a variety of activities and educational initiatives to showcase the theme at our Grandparents Day celebration on Friday, 14th March. Mr. Tim Vane-Tempest, Principal of Holy Family School is looking forward to the Day which he says will highlight to the wider community all the opportunities available to students at Holy Family. “Catholic schools offer a unique educational experience which forms the child or young person as a person of integrity, faith and wisdom,” said Mr. Vane-Tempest. “At Holy Family School, we offer pastoral and outreach opportunities for students, leadership, sporting, performing arts and musical opportunities all supported by excellent facilities and 21st Century technologies.” The day will begin with the celebration of Mass in the Sacred Church at Luddenham, followed by a brunch and book fair and student performances. Principal Vane-Tempest said students’ varied interests and abilities are also catered for across a broad curriculum and supportive learning environment. “Not only do we offer many wonderful opportunities but importantly for parents’ peace of mind, we also offer a safe and supportive environment for their children to learn, achieve and grow from Kindergarten to Year 6.” “I invite all parents and carers to join us to celebrate Catholic Schools Week, meet other local parents and enjoy all that Holy Family School has to offer.”

What’s Happening to our Children? In modern society, many illnesses such as asthma, allergies, AD/HD, autism, irritable bowel syndrome, digestive disorders, schizophrenia, anxiety and depression are on the rise, and our children are the most vulnerable. There are many obstacles to effective healthcare for our children. Government health policies ignore and many GPs remain uninformed about digestive and metabolic conditions and environmental onslaughts impacting on our children’s brains. Multinational companies make huge profits from processed food, medicine and consumer products that are literally making our children sick. The result is a global epidemic of childhood disease as reflected in Australian health trends over the past 20 years: • Autism: nearly 1 in 100 Australian children • ADHD: 1 in 4 Australian children • Allergies: 1 in 3 Australian children • Cancer, diabetes, obesity and depression have more than doubled • Wide-spread nutritional deficiencies are adversely impacting on IQ and immunity. We shouldn’t despair. This is an exciting time in the science of nutritional, naturopathic and integrative healthcare. Hundreds of studies are coming out in support of diet, targeted supplementation and lifestyle modification as effective treatment options for ADHD, allergies, asthma, autism and more. Nutritional scientists worldwide are finding malnutrition and toxicity, inflammation and oxidative stress common to many conditions. Our environment more than our genes is driving this epidemic in epidemics. The good news is that we can all do something about our environment, especially diet and lifestyle! What is the Mindd Foundation? www.mindd.org Mindd is an acronym for Metabolic Immunologic Neurologic Digestive Disorders that often affect the mind. • Michelle is a Mindd Foundation accredited practitioner. Her treatment protocols cover digestive tract health, dietary intervention, nutritional supplementation and detoxification. • Michelle can also recommend appropriate testing and integrative therapies to treat the whole individual and assess the underlying causes. Positive relationships are the key to success, happiness and harmony Professor Martin Seligman, the founder of Positive Psychology suggests that the most important thing in life is the cultivation of quality relationships. He states; ‘Everything is about relationships. Success in business, work, intimacy, friendship, family and even the self (the way you treat yourself is crucial)… is determined by the quality of your relationships.’ He argues that the key to fantastic relationships is not about fighting less, but actively praising more. In fact, in his research, this was the number 1 factor in regards to whether people remain together or not. ‘Think of it like a bank account. Every time you praise, encourage and show an active interest in your partner and their successes, you are making large deposits. So when there are arguments (withdrawals), you’re still going to have a positive balance.’ So how do you do this? He suggests to think of it like positive storytelling and discussion of skilled applications. For example, if your partner has just been promoted, the best response is not just to say ‘congratulations’, but to also enquire about why they deserved it, what skills they utilized to achieve it, and how they will continue to use those skills and abilities to grow in the future. In other words, create and share a positive story together about the victory and the positive future success that are likely to occur as well. Don’t forget that other research has found the need for five positive comments to every one (negative) or correcting comment if you want a quality live giving relationship.

5 Top Tips for Repaying your Home Loan Faster With interest rates at an all time low, there’s never been a better time to get ahead on your home loan. Low interest rates mean you can put more of your dollars towards repaying the principal you borrowed and less towards interest costs. Here are our top tips to pay off your home loan sooner: 1. Round up your mortgage repayments: Paying just a little bit extra on each repayment is an effective way to reduce the your loan principal and can save you interest. 2. Offset your interest: By linking an everyday transaction account or savings account to your home loan you can save interest while still having access to your money. 3. Use a credit card wisely: By putting your daily expenses onto the right credit card you can maximize the balance in your offset account and possibly earn some rewards at the same time. It’s important that you clear the credit card debt each month before any interest is charged. 4. Switch your repayments from monthly to fortnightly (or weekly): This can make a significant reduction to your loan term and the total amount of interest you pay – taking years off your loan and saving you thousands of dollars. 5. Review your loans regularly: We recommend all our clients review their home loans every 3 years to ensure they are still in the right product – being in the wrong loan could be costing you hundreds each year.

Camille’s Pets!! I am so lucky that I can take my dogs to work with me every day. They sleep behind the front reception desk and pop up occasionally to say hello to the customers. Bella is my 13 year old kelpie. She had a slight cough for 3 weeks and had chest radiographs and a heart ultrasound performed.

Bella was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), a heart disease which causes the heart muscle to lose its ability to contract. As the heart is not pumping blood forward effectively, the blood backs up and causes fluid to build up in the chest, which Bella was then coughing up. Bella was started on heart medications and the cough has reduced and she is as happy as ever. The usual outcome for DCM is only a few months, and Bella is now in her 7th month.

Each day I have with my best friend Bella is a gift. Pony is my Great Dane x Bull Mastiff. He is coming up to 3 years of age and he is still stubborn as a mule. I was kind of looking for a new dog to keep Pony company when Bella passes away, when I found a new dog at Hawkesbury Pound in October 2013. My new dogs name is Callie, she is 1.5 years of age and is a Great Dane x Italian Greyhound according to the DNA test I had performed. Callie is 45kg and looks a lot like Pony, except she is a brown harlequin colour. I only had Callie for about 1 week before she became unwell. She had a fever and she was very quiet. Blood tests and ultrasound did not reveal the cause of her illness. I sent Callie to see the specialists at SASH at North Ryde, where they performed a spinal tap to obtain a sample of her spinal fluid. The spinal fluid was tested and was negative for bacteria, protozoa and fungi. Callie was diagnosed with Steroid Responsive MeningitisArteritis (SRMA), which is an autoimmune disease which attacks the central nervous system. Thankfully SRMA is treatable.

Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital

Callie was started on a 6 month course of corticosteroids, and she was back to normal within 1 week. Callie ate and drank like a horse whilst on the corticosteroids, which is a normal side effect of this drug. Callie was weaned off the corticosteroids and thankfully has had no relapse of the meningitis.

Bella still runs my household and Pony and Callie are like 2 peas in a pod. Every day I have Bella is a blessing and even though I have had time to prepare, I will never be ready for the day when Bella passes away. I also have 3 cats and 2 pet sheep, but they don’t come to work with me! Check out our website for more information. www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. .
