Schools Writers’ Festival Schools in our local area who feed into Glenmore Park High School were recently involved in the second annual Glenmore Park/Mulgoa Valley Writers’ Festival. Students from Glenmore Park High, Glenmore Park Public, Luddenham Public, Mulgoa Public, Regentville Public, Surveyors Creek Public, Wallacia Public, and Warragamba Public Schools wrote poetry for the event. Each school selected students to represent their school at the festival. On the night of the festival all the eager poets and their families listened to guest speaker Steven Herrick speak about writing and recite some of his poems. The students read their own poetry to students from other schools and their families. During supper many of the students took the opportunity to get Steven Herrick to sign their books. The night was a great opportunity
Students from Mulgoa Public School
to recognise students with an interest and talent in writing.

Euthanasia and Suicide: It's all a matter of God Recently, the Green's have raised the issue of legalising euthanasia. In 1997, the Howard Government disallowed the Northern Territory Euthanasia legislation. The Federal Green's new bill would reverse that decision. First, let's be clear about what is euthanasia. Euthanasia is the termination of the life of a patient by a doctor. It involves a doctor giving a patient a lethal injection that kills the patient. It is not the decision to withdraw medical treatment that is keeping a patient alive, such as turning off a machine. This could be seen as simply allowing nature to take its course. Nor is it the treating of pain that has the unintended consequence of shortening life. The motive in that case is all important. 'Voluntary' euthanasia indicates that the patient consents to the killing. If there is no Creator and no God, then of course Voluntary Euthanasia makes sense. There is no purpose to our lives beyond minimizing pain and maximizing pleasure. Human life is an accident, not a gift. Pain and death are meaningless. We are just intelligent
animals. As we would euthanase a suffering dog or horse, so we should a suffering human to put them out of their misery. But most of us sense that humans are not just animals. An ordered and often beautiful creation points to a Creator. Therefore, we must listen to see if God has spoken about the nature and purpose of life and death. Christians believe that this God has spoken to us in his Son, the man Jesus Christ, and in the Bible. Of all that God made, humans alone are in the image of God (Genesis 1:2627). God has given us life and breath (Genesis 2:7, Acts 17:25). Humans are the pinnacle of God's created order. Humans make God's world 'very good' (Genesis 1:31). But humans have rebelled against their Creator. It started with Adam and Eve, and continues with us. All have sinned (Romans 3:23). That is why suffering and death have entered our world. 'The wages of sin is death' (Romans 6:23). We die because we sin. Likewise, our suffering is God's megaphone. It tells us all is not right with our world. So Jesus pointed to some suffering that he saw, and said this: 'or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them -- do you think they
were more guilty than all those others living in Jerusalem? I tell you no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish' (Luke 13:4 NIV). Beyond death is God's judgment (Hebrews 9:27), and then an eternity in either heaven or hell. Jesus desperately warns us about hell (eg Matthew 5:21-30), and to seek first the Kingdom of Heaven (eg Matthew 6:32). Those who promote voluntary euthanasia therefore promote (perhaps unknowingly, but still in fact) a double challenge to God. The person seeking assisted suicide wants to take from God the time of death. And the person assisting suicide lifts his hand against God's image and against the gift of life, without God's sanction. We are all called to die well. The bible way of dying with dignity is recognising who God is and who we are: 'If we live, we live to the Lord; and if we die, we die to the Lord. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Lord. For this very reason, Christ died and returned to life so that he might be Lord of both the dead and the Living.' (Romans 14:8-9) Matt Olliffe Minister, Anglican Parish of Mulgoa www.anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au

The State heritage listing boundary around the 200-year-old Mulgoa cottage has been extended to include a 10 hectare parcel of farmland. Minister for Planning, Tony Kelly, said, “This decision will protect the peaceful green views and original colonial landscape of the cottage, along with remnants of the cottage’s first vineyard. The land was part of the original grant to William Cox who supervised 30 convicts building the French Inspired Gifts & Homewares first road over the Blue Mountains. “The cottage dated from 1810 and was listed in 1982 Concepts and Designs on the State Heritage Register but the land to the north is 48 The Straight Road, Mulgoa also special, it’s an integral part of the setting and worthy of heritage listing,” the Minister said. “The cottage is without question the oldest weatherIncluding Soft Furnishings, Lamp shades, board house and oldest continually occupied residence in Jewellery, Handbags, Mirrors & much more NSW and quite possibly Australia.“Other houses like ElizaOpen Tues & Wed 10am - 3pm or by appointment beth Farm in Parramatta may be older but they are generally run as museums – not residences. Contact Fiona: 4773 9694 or 0409 091 932 Mr Kelly said the land had historical significance through several generations of the Cox family who were important in the development of agricultural and pastoral industries in the colony of NSW. Police Presence assured
Handy Basket & Peg Table
A complaint has been received about the lack of response from St Mary’s Police in relation to anti social behaviour happening in Silverdale, “often all hours of the night, early hours of the morning and sometimes all day. The unsocial behaviour does not stop so we all think that the police do not visit the area as they have promised to do so!!” This recent long weekend they once again notified St Marys Police Station about very loud music, cars coming and going with their motors running continually for over 10 minutes each car and glass bottles being thrown on the roads. The police were not seen to visit and again the noise did not stop. A statement from St Mary’s police has responded that the police attended all three incidents reported and dealt with each sufficiently. One of the incidents involved police issuing a Noise Abatement direction to the persons emitting the noise. Inspector Green said “I can assure your community that we give due diligence to all incidents occuring within the Warragamba/Silverdale area. Obviously we prioritise jobs according to the level of seriousness. I can assure you that we attend all incidents reported to us within a reasonable time frame. All incidents that are reported to us are followed up and all necessary actions taken to resolve these matters. Your readers should be encouraged to speak to us directly at St Marys Police Station should they have any concerns. We still have a Police Officer working out of Warragamba Police Station and our car crews are tasked to patrol your area consistently” .

Warragamba Parks New Names wanted Wollondilly Shire Council resolved at it’s meeting on 20 September 2010 that “Council approve for consultation to be undertaken with the Community to name the five identified un-named parks and reserves in Warragamba”. This originated from a notice of motion put forward by Cr Simon Landow at the Council Meeting on 19 April 2010. We would like to get this process underway to coincide with the 50 year anniversary of the Opening of Warragamba Dam,” says Mayor, Cr Michael Banasik. The reserves are currently known as Third Street Reserve, Fifth Street

The NSW Government has refused planning approval for a $12.3 million landfill and waste recovery facility at a former quarry site at Orchard Hills. Minister for Planning Tony Kelly said the proposal by Dellara Pty Ltd to construct and operate the facility had been carefully assessed but had been deemed unacceptable. The project was refused due to a lack of strategic justification for a proposal of this size in this location close to residential areas, unresolved concerns regarding noise impacts on local residents and unsightly visual impacts.

Warradale Little Athletics Club Celebrate with IGA Warradale Little Athletics Club recently took out 1st place in the Annual IGA Docket Competition for the second year in a row with over $1 million worth of receipts collected. Club President Barry Garment was all smiles as the award was presented at the recent Little A’s Annual State Conference. He said, “As a small club with only around 160 athletes each season it is very hard to raise significant funds for all the different needs within the centre each year. This IGA award is a way in which everyone within the club and their families can contribute in a meaningful way. We are a small community based club made up from half a dozen villages in the area and we receive fantastic support from the two IGA stores
in our local area – Silverdale IGA, run by Jane, Maryanne & Sylvana are the local supermarket who service the Warragamba & Silverdale communities and Luddenham Super IGA, run by Lucy & Frank who service the villages at the foot of the hill including Luddenham, Mulgoa & Wallacia.” Frank, who runs the Luddenham store was especially pleased as his other IGA store were instrumental in helping
proving the ground in a major way this year, together with help from the local football club – Warragamba Wombats. Warradale’s win of $3,500 in the IGA competition has been used towards the installation of two brand new discus cages and three new long jump pits and run ups whilst the football club have added a new Junior field for their younger members. All this work is done by club volunteers and the support of local businesses such as the IGA stores is essential and very much appreciated by all the local clubs. Warradale Little Athletics Club has just started their new season and is still taking registrations every Friday night from 5.30 pm onwards at the ground at Warragamba Oval, Warragamba. Ages 3 to 16 years. Enquiries to Sam Stein 0411 047 080.

Holy Family School’s Enrichment Program The enrichment students at Holy Family Primary School (HFS) have this term begun sharing the learning experience with students from Caroline Chisholm College (CCC). The
workshop began with the CCC student enrichment team, together with their teacher, leading the primary students through an interesting journey of the brain and how it functions. HFS students were intrigued by all the different parts of the brain, and began to see how different parts of the brain affect the different ways we think, and therefore learn. The students were shown some examples of activities and games that use the vari-
ous thinking strategies. The HFS students eagerly awaited their next workshop experience. The CCC students set up the room with thinking tasks, games, and puzzles. The activities were all coloured coded. This enabled students to identify the thinking strategies that were required for the task to be completed. The enrichment partnership between these schools is an interesting and valuable initiative to enhance student learning. We look forward to continuing the program as the year progresses. Many of our students have performed extremely well in the International Competitions and Assessments for Schools (ICAS) program offered by the University of New South Wales. A number of our students have received Distinctions and Credits for their efforts. Congratulations to following students Distinction Matthew Xerri - Science; Danielle Mackay - Writing; Credit Joe Logozzo – Science; Danielle Mackay – Science, Spelling; Rocco Furfaro – Science, Writing; Will Hoven – Science; Alex Mackay - Science Heather-Rose Perigo – Spelling, Writ-

Wallacia Ladies Bowl Over Competition Tanya Kelly, Kerrie Quinn and Tracy Smith from Wallacia Bowling Club recently entered the District Triples Championships for “a bit of fun” and ended up winning the event. They then progressed to the Zone Championships which they also won. From there the ladies went on to represent the Zone at the State Championships at Forster but were unfortunately defeated. This was a great achievement for these girls, two of whom have only been bowling for a couple of years. The average age of the team was less than 40 which goes to show that you don’t have to wait to retire to play bowls. On that note Wallacia Womens Bowling Club is urgently seeking new bowling members. Our play days are Thursdays from 10am and Saturdays from 1pm (for those ladies who work during the week) but we also have Social Mixed Bowls on Friday afternoons at 5pm (Daylight Saving Time) and Sunday Mornings at 9am (includes breakfast.)
If you are aged between 14 and 114 and think you may be interested in playing please come along to an

Recycled Water Plant Ready for Action Up to 50 million litres of recycled water a day will flow into the Hawkesbury-Nepean River at Penrith – with one of Australia’s largest water recycling projects maintaining the river’s flow. The $209 million plant at St Marys is now open. Following the plant’s successful commissioning period, the plant will now start providing up to 18 billion litres of recycled water a year – 3.6 per cent of the needs of Sydney, the Illawarra and the Blue Mountains. The project takes wastewater from three plants at Quakers Hill, St Marys and Penrith and treats it using reverse osmosis, which involves pushing already treated wastewater through extremely fine filters to trap nutrients, minerals and chemicals. The very high quality recycled water – which is similar in quality to distilled water – will be released into the Hawkesbury-Nepean River to maintain flows in the iconic river. An education centre is opening at the site. For more information on Sydney Water’s recycling projects visit www.sydneywater.com.au
